Summer 2023 Version
I have created new packaging for the ScribblePad. I think it makes the product look more complete. If necessity is the mother of invention, then this is the baby. It was born more out of economic necessity rather than aesthetical necessity. I wanted to move on to blister packaging for the next batch of Scribbles but was running short on money, so, I thought, “Perhaps I should figure out a way to…

i think to say the Brain Ghost Dirk can only exist because of a unique interaction between Dirk and Jake's powers is misrepresentative of what being a Hero of the Heart aspect really means. while it's true that the power of Hope is what allows the imaginary to become real, it's important to keep in mind aspects aren't just facets of the self, but facets of all reality; in much the same way anyone, Hero of Time or not, can have other selves in other timelines, splinters too are just a fact of existence. the Hero of Heart is just one whose quest is confronting and interacting with those splinters directly.
the very idea of the "Brain Ghost" is a demonstration of this fact. "ghost images" of people and things are sort of recurring characters in Homestuck, usually following an attempt to captchalogue or appearify something that's not practically available at the time. but what's important about these ghosts is that even if they're not "actually", or physically, real objects, they still carry the same essence; from Hussie's own commentary, "This is another indication of the fact that [the scribblepad / sylladices in general / Paradox Space as a whole] is dealing in ideas, not material constructs."
dream bubble ghosts are a further elaboration on this same idea; though they vary in the minutiae of timelines and alternate selves, each ghost contains the memory or idea, and thus true essence, of the "actual" physical body they are the image of. the only difference between this kind of ghost and the "Brain Ghost" is right there in the operative word; these memory-forms exist not as psychic bubble projections, but within the brain of the observer. but the key concept remains identical: just as alternate timeline ghosts may remember events differently but at remain the same person at their core, Jake's "subjective" perception of Dirk may differ from Dirk's own "objective" view of himself, but both of them are simply different iterations on the true idea that is Dirk.
which is probably why Heart and Mind form such a close but enigmatic pair! while the Mind aspect concerns itself with the "subject" who alters reality with every thought, the splinters of the Heart aspect are the "objects" which are altered every time they are observed. which is, in turn, probably the reasoning behind the infamous Schrodinger's Nepeta, the close to 300 pages between Gamzee's attack and the reveal that the cat is dead. (to take this particular train one station further; this, I suspect, may have also been partial inspiration for Meulin's mysterious double nature). in a very real sense, the "soul" that the Heart aspect is so concerned with is just another word for an "observation"; a ghost is just one particular "observation" of that character's life and death. but again, what's essential here is that just as you don't need to be a Hero of Mind to alter reality with your thoughts, you don't need to be a Hero of Heart to be altered; it's just that these Heroes are the ones with the most potential to observe these phenomena in action!

Hi I just read "Like Mother" and loved it, one question, what is the site they were reading the in universe old gender writings on. I've only really used a03 for online writings and readings, and want to expand where I'm looking! Was it basically on scribblepad? Asking for a friend haha
It was a reference to Fictionmania, which is an old site (dating from the 1990s) dedicated entirely to gender-bending stories.
Now, before you go check out that site, I have to give a piece of warning: most of the stuff that's on there is not good, to say the least. The vast majority treats gender-bending stuff as a fetish, to be read for sexual reasons.
There are some good stories in there (I can give you examples if you want), but they are few and far in-between.

The amount of things the scribblepad can do is really making my brain go “this will backfire horrible somehow.”

Jade: Draw the punch designix.
Your inscrutable thought process leads you to draw the PUNCH DESIGNIX on your SCRIBBLEPAD.
Author commentary: I just started making up commands from this point on to move things along, and there was virtually no detriment to doing so, or even any noticeable impact on the way the story progressed. I kept them pretty similar in feel to the commands people tended to submit, while cutting a lot of the bullshit they would throw out there. There was a kind of dumb sentiment among a few people that doing this was somehow "STEALING CONTROL OF THE STORY AWAY FROM THE READER!" I always thought it was silly how some conflated reader-submitted commands with reader control of the story. They were never in control at all. In fact, the commands were sort of a sneaky device to help make that point. Because the author and characters buck the will of the commands so often (e.g., "Get the pumpkin. Wait, what pumpkin? It's gone sucker, nice try."), the device turns out to be a repeated demonstration that the notion readers are exerting their will over the story was always an illusion.

I know that after you’ve alchemized an item the recipe for it is saved for you by the game.
I know that adding stuff onto the alchemiter allows for you to see what you’re going to make with your punched cards before you make it.
I know that the Recipe Modus lets you see the alchemy recipes for the items you have and that the Pictionary Modus lets you make punchable ghost images to alchemize items you don’t physically have.
But I really like the idea of having a portable way to find out how to alchemize the items you already have and to get the stuff you need to do so all in one place.
So, I present to you an alchemist’s best friend: the PictRecipe Modus.
Tumblr media
Made by combining a Recipe Modus (array modus && recipe book) and a Pictionary Modus (array modus && drawing tablet) in a fetch modus control deck, then proceeding to alchemize the physical recipe book and the scribble pad together.
Upon opening the front (red) half first, your captchalogue cards will make up the pages of the book all the way through to the back. The back side of every card-page will display the item’s recipe and grist cost like it’s a regular Recipe Modus, ghost images included. Items can be plucked from any card-page at any time as long as they’re usable. Ghost card-pages can be removed for punching but their items are still stuck.
If you open the back (green) half first, all card-pages will display their item’s code on the back instead of a recipe. The back cover will go from having a scribblepad’s design printed on it to being a working scribblepad with buttons and all. The logo on the front of the book will also turn into a physical stylus-spoon that twists open to reveal spare nibs inside. It’s then possible to use the scribblepad to captchalogue nearby items or create ghost images of items that aren’t present, exactly the way you would with a Pictionary Modus.
Alchemize a Wallet Modus to hold your upgraded alchemy setup and you can now make anything, anywhere, any time as long as you have space to set your equipment down and the grist for the stuff you wanna make.

Using the scribblepad to circumvent the grist requirement for the holopad is also fantastic.

Yay! Got my new #starbucksplanner just before the old one ran out of pages. YES! I use it 😅 I actually find writing notes down more effective, I can remember it more. DAMMIT!
Author commentary: The Scribblepad really quite enthusiastically wants to assume you're trying to draw a robot any time you draw something mechanical-looking it can't parse. I think this makes it likely that the Scribblepad is a pretty sophisticated AI, with a whole personality and such. It just really wants you to build it a friend. :(

Jade keeps dropping a weird assortment of objects for you to captchalogue and punch. You've given up trying to identify any rhyme or reason to the thought process behind it.
In other words, Hussie is inviting the readers to go wild with their commands. Jade will drop whatever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You put the punched BLENDER card in a shunt just for the hell of it, and stick it on the jumper pins.
The ALCHEMITER is fitted with the BLENDER UPGRADE.
Oh shit, we’re going to merging cards into our Sburb gear?
That's fantastic. Now we can start fucking around with the alchemy process itself!
Tumblr media
Your inscrutable thought process leads you to draw the PUNCH DESIGNIX on your SCRIBBLEPAD.
C’mon, this the most scrutable decision you’ve made all day! We’re about to turbocharge our alchemy process!
Tumblr media
>Jade: Draw the holopad.
You don't have nearly enough grist to deploy the HOLOPAD, whatever it does. But maybe you can get it as a freebie upgrade to the alchemiter.
Hold the fucking phone. You can grab ghost images of Sburb item previews?
There’s no ambiguity to this anymore - Jade’s grandpa gave her a straight up cheat. We might want to take a second look at those other gimmick moduses.
Tumblr media
At this point, we’re only a couple of steps away from a universal handheld alchemizer. We essentially have a Wand of Transmutation at that point.
And once we get there, we can probably take it even further. The more I see of this system, the more I realize how few limits there really are.
Tumblr media
The Laserstation, however, isn’t invited to the party just yet, simply because it’s too complex to draw. That's kind of a novel way to gatekeep powerful items.
