SAVE POINTS

The save points of the original FFVII consisted in an angled C (”check point”) floating on a crystal base. In the REmake there are no more save points but the same symbols appear on the healing benches.

PHS

In the OG the player could use the PHS tool in the world map or at the save points to switch the party members. In the Remake there are PHS terminals in Shinra HQ that the group use to communicate and switch between two parties in Chapter 17.

TIFA’S PIANO

During her childhood Tifa had a piano in her bedroom. Among the many posters of the REmake there are some with the image of a keyboard, one of them indeed hung in Tifa’s bedroom.

We know from the original game that Avalanche was originally founded in Cosmo Canyon. This is also the name of one of the drinks served at Seventh Heaven, Avalanche’s hideout.

In the OG Cloud and the others parachuted themselves on Midgar from the Highwind, in order to prevent Hojo to use the Sister Ray to help Sephiroth. In the Remake Cloud, Jessie, Biggs and Wedge parachute back in Sector 7 after the mission in Chapter 4.

MUSEUM

At Gold Saucer, Dio had a personal museum with a big picture of himself. Moreover, he had also a massive gold statue at the top of the amusement park. In the Remake, the 60th floor of the Shinra building hosts a museum where there’s also a big golden statue of the President.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Bugenhagen has a 3D holographic symulator in the Cosmo Canyon observatory, necessary for his planetology studies (Shinra machinary he received from Professor Gast). “Cosmos theatre” is a 3D virtual reality symulator where visitors can learn about the Ancients and the Promised Land.

ARENA

The Battle Square (or Battle Arena or Colosseum) was an area of the Gold Saucer, where Cloud could entertain Dio with a match in exchange of the Keystone. In the Remake, also Corneo has a Colosseum at Wall Market.

DATES

In the OG, depending on the player’s choices, Cloud could spend a date at the Gold Saucer with Aerith, Tifa, Yuffie or Barret. A similar system exists also in the Remake and it affects a cutscene at the beginning of Chapter 14.

SHOWMAN

During the date at the Gold Saucer, Cloud and the girl (NB: not Barret) had to take part to a stage show where they played the parts of the knight and the princess. In the Remake, in order to obtain the dress-up to infiltrate Corneo’s Mansion, he has to take part to a dance show at the Honey Bee Inn.

THE PRINCESS

Princess Rosa was one of the protagonists of the Gold Saucer show, played by Aerith, Tifa or Yuffie during the date. In the Remake Cloud can read a letter in the room of Jessie’s father, where Jessie announced to her parents that she obtained the part of the princess in a show at Gold Saucer.

FIREWORKS

There were fireworks creating a romantic atmosphere during the ride on the gondola at Gold Saucer. In the Remake, if Aerith is wearing the red dress, her appearance is accompanied by fireworks and red carpet.

KISS

The LTD has split the fandom for ages, but the only two girls who have ever been shown kissing Cloud are Yuffie (during her GS date) and Jessie (if the player manages to end the bike minigame in Chapter 4 with HP above 80%).

DREAM

In the OG Aerith appeared in Cloud’s dream just before getting to the City of the Ancients, the place where Sephiroth killed her. In the Remake this dream is hinted in two scenes:

1) The way Aerith appeared at Cloud at the beginning of Chapter 9 recalls the way she appeared in his dream (which triggers in Cloud a vision of her death).

2) She appears in his dreams again during her resolution scene, using gestures and words that hint at her death.

VOICES OF THE PLANET

Aftyer Meteor was summoned in the OG, Cloud and the others could hear the scream of the Planet from the Highwind. In the Remake, when the group faced Sephiroth at the end of the highway, the Whispers start screaming in pain and Aerith said those were the voices of the Planet.

OG: RedXIII: Did you...hear something? - Tifa: The Planet’s scream...or Meteor? Is it this Planet? - Cloud: Hey, how do we know that this is really the Planet’s scream? - Tifa: Did you forget? Bugenhagen told us.

Haven Box: River Mammals

Another small mammal win - turns out beavers are just as interesting and adorable as the prairie dogs. (Also a keystone species…the similarities continue…)

Story & Poetry

The science book about beavers this week fascinated us all. While the reading from our handbook covered river otters, muskrats and mink, our focus was really on beavers. We added to our week with a little documentary about Canadian beavers that was a delightful bonus.

Science & Nature

This week for science we experimented with constructing beaver dams. Cousin Jules got to make one, too (and she insisted I build beavers to go on the dams, which is why there are electric blue air dry clay figures that look nothing like beavers adjacent to everyone’s work.)

We had done this experiment a couple years ago, but that was from a kit that contained all the supplies and made it too easy. This time they foraged in the backyard for supplies and used the Dam Building Dough that we made for our handwork. Constructions consisted of grass, sticks, mulch, rocks, and eventually lots of dirt and mud. After about a solid hour of constructing, running tests and doing repairs, they were both able to make something that held most of the water in a pond for the beaver. They absolutely loved doing this, and definitely appreciate the engineering prowess of these river mammals now!

Nature Play

Our friends weren’t feeling well this week, so we just took a brief visit to the creek to investigate beavers. We looked at the freshly gnawed tree trunks and saw the dam they built this summer (which was much bigger than we have seen before!)

The suggested activity was making mud faces. Kira was game, but Jamie chose to make art he called “A Million Dots” instead.

Forest to Table

The Corn on the Cob with Compound Butter was so well recieved we made it twice! We mixed our butter with fresh basil from the garden and they gobbled it up.

Art & Handwork

For handwork, we made Dam Building Dough (basically homemade play doh) for our dam project, and used the leftovers for playing with. Kira sculpted a dragon.

Art appreciation was another from John James Audubon that we dissected, this time beavers instead of birds. For music we listened to Lily Pond by Billy Mayerl, which they really liked for the flutes.

Nature Notebooking

There was a snafu with the Notebooking class this week (an error on Haven’s part.). So I just had the kids do their own interpretation of a beaver swimming up into the lodge. You can see the little beaver nose at the bottom of Jamie’s work.

The village of Għajnsielem in Gozo has several picturesque squares, chief among them the old village square, Independence Square. Lined with houses laden with character, this square is dominated by the village's old parish church that, like the new church at the top of this photo, is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin of Loreto. RAMON PERELLOS STREET Independence Square leads to the main ‘pjazza’ surrounding the striking Neo-Gothic parish church of the Gozitan town of Għajnsielem. The new, bigger parish church was built when the old one became too small to keep up with the village’s increasing population. Designed by architect Ugo Mallia, completion of the church was however not without trouble. No less than four changes to the architect overseeing the construction meant that the building process lingered on at a snail’s pace for over half a century, with many villagers losing hope of ever seeing its completion. After the laying of its foundation stone in 1924, it took till 1980 for new temple to be completed, and till 1989 for it to be finally consecrated. A NICHE OF OUR LADY OF SAFE HAVEN In Independence Square, at the corner with Ramon Perellos Street (top-right) is a niche housing a statue of Our Lady of Porto Salvo/Our Lady of Safe Haven. This antique stone statue wasn’t originally where it is located at present. Its exact date of construction is unknown, but according to archival reach it is known that in 1856 the statue was located at the crossroads near the harbour. The niche is composed an inverted console holding an iron cast lamp post. The corner is hallowed to make room for the statue of Our Lady. The upper part of the niche consists of a round arch with a scrolled keystone and a Cross. The statue of Our Lady of Porto Salvo is of high quality with great attention to detail. The Madonna is seen standing regally with one foot brought forwards and facing directly to the devotee carrying Infant Christ. Baby Jesus is sculpted wearing a loin cloth and holding a globe with a Cross on top. Beneath the statue is the figure of a boat, probably signalling a connection with the number fishermen that lived in Għajnsielem during the 19th and 20th century. Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol (French, 1861–1944) Aristide Joseph Bonaventure Maillol (French: [mɑjɔl]; December 8, 1861 – September 27, 1944) was a French sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Maillol was born in Banyuls-sur-Mer, Roussillon. He decided at an early age to become a painter, and moved to Paris in 1881 to study art.[1] After several applications and several years of living in poverty, his enrollment in the École des Beaux-Arts was accepted in 1885, and he studied there under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel.[2] His early paintings show the influence of his contemporaries Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and Paul Gauguin.

Gauguin encouraged his growing interest in decorative art, an interest that led Maillol to take up tapestry design. In 1893 Maillol opened a tapestry workshop in Banyuls, producing works whose high technical and aesthetic quality gained him recognition for renewing this art form in France. He began making small terracotta sculptures in 1895, and within a few years his concentration on sculpture led to the abandonment of his work in tapestry.

The subject of nearly all of Maillol's mature work is the female body, treated with a classical emphasis on stable forms. The figurative style of his large bronzes is perceived as an important precursor to the greater simplifications of Henry Moore, and his serene classicism set a standard for European (and American) figure sculpture until the end of World War II.

Josep Pla said of Maillol, "These archaic ideas, Greek, were the great novelty Maillol brought into the tendency of modern sculpture. What you need to love from the ancients is not the antiquity, it is the sense of permanent, renewed novelty, that is due to the nature and reason."[5]

His important public commissions include a 1912 commission for a monument to Cézanne, as well as numerous war memorials commissioned after World War I. Maillol served as a juror with Florence Meyer Blumenthal in awarding the Prix Blumenthal (1919–1954) a grant awarded to painters, sculptors, decorators, engravers, writers, and musicians.[6]

He made a series of woodcut illustrations for an edition of Vergil's Eclogues published by Harry Graf Kessler in 1926–27. He also illustrated Daphnis and Chloe by Longus (1937) and Chansons pour elle by Paul Verlaine (1939).[7] Nazi-looted art[edit]

During the German occupation of France, dozens of artworks by Maillol were seized by the Nazi looting organization known as the E.R.R. or Reichsleiter Rosenberg Taskforce. The Database of Art Objects at the Jeu de Paume lists thirty artworks by Maillol.[8] The German Lost Art Foundation database lists 33 entries for Maillol.[9] The German Historical Museum's database for artworks recovered by the Allies at the Munich Central Collecting Point has 13 items related to Maillol.[10] Maillol's sculpture ‘Head of Flora’ was found in the stash of Cornelius Gurlitt, son of Hitler's art dealer Hildebrand Gurlitt[11] together with lithographs,[12] drawings and paintings.[13]

Gene editing encompasses many different tools and technologies, but the end-goal is the same: to address the root cause of a disease instead of managing its outcome, i.e., the symptoms. Changing genes outside of the body (ex vivo) involves modifying cells - either from the patient or from a donor - to correct genetic mutations or provide new functionalities, and then transplanting them into the patient.1 In vivo gene editing involves the modification of genes in cells while they are inside the body.1 This is a rapidly evolving field utilizing different technologies. The most widely used approach acts like a pair of “molecular scissors” enabling scientists to cut the DNA sequence at a specific spot and then correct, replace, or remove the faulty pieces of DNA.

Gene editing: A biomedical “swiss army knife”

Our DNA is comparable to the world’s biggest code book, containing words made up only of four basic letters – A (adenosine), C (cytosine), G (guanine), and T (thymine) – which, arranged correctly, provide instructions for making proteins.2 The DNA double helix in humans consists of three billion specific arrangements of these letters, and a single “typo” in that sequence can often be the cause for one of the more than 4,000 rare, monogenic, sometimes life-threatening diseases.3

CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) is an efficient and versatile cutting-edge gene editing tool. By finding a specific stretch of DNA inside a cell, binding to it, and then precisely cutting the DNA at a defined location, it can induce the desired DNA sequence changes in the cell. This is why some scientists liken the technology to a “find and replace” or “backspace key” - capable of editing a single letter in a long genetic sequence. Other gene editing technologies are able to increase or decrease gene expression, install or remove DNA sequences, or switch specific genes on or off.
