The problem with The Sea Beast is that it starts off really good. Piratey adventure crew. Skin tone diversity. Little orphan girl finds a family and lives her dreams. We Fight Monsters. Good stuff all around. But then it tries tacking on theme after theme. The monsters are intelligent. The monsters could be our friends if we let go of Evil Traditions. There's a War Against The Monsters, but it's actually a contrivance of the evil, useless Royals who are lying to the People. Said Royals also want to end the traditional Monster Hunting industry in favour of a new Modern (read sleek, rigid, and obviously inferior extension of the Royal Navy) way of doing things just so Captain Crow can have extra Motivation. There's a Sea Witch who dabbles in Poisons and Arcane Technology who demands a hefty sacrifice be paid for her services (but she's actually just a throwaway character who sets up a plot device). And the little girl who ends up being the central protagonist ends up being a Mary Sue who reads suspiciously like Wish Fulfillment.

But really, the worst thing about the movie is how telegraphed it was. Every trope is played straight as an arrow. Nearly everything that happens is so eminently predictable, it's boring. You meet a character and you don't need clairvoyance to see what the future will hold for them. The story for all its busy-ness and bloat also paints strictly inside the lines. It takes no risks and runs zero experiments. It doesn't try to say anything that hasn't been said better elsewhere. It's just trite and irritatingly predictable, without even being that fun after the first half an hour.
