the ocean loves her children, you see.

There's an old story selkies tell their children. The ocean loves her children, you see: if you ask for her help, she will gift you the things you need, even if they are not what you want. So most seafolk- sirens, merkin, sea monsters, etc- were once like us: the soft and gentle selkie folk, who love the ocean and the world she gives them. But they were once in need of the ocean mother's help, and their hearts cried to her- and she answered them in kind, changing them beyond the magic their shapeshifting allowed. And so they survived.

You were lost from your family, in a strange sea, and had tried to help a struggling sailor. When they had turned on you, wanting your skin, you were shocked, scared, confused, angry, and you screamed your heartbreak so deeply that your throat went raw- and the ocean mother gave you new gifts, and you used them to tear the sailors apart.

selkies are meant to be soft, kind, the gentlest of the ocean's children. and in your moments of pain and betrayal, you had chosen to forsake those things. your rage and agony tore the water red and frothy, until there were no sailors left to rip apart.

you fell into despair, then. you tried to rip the scales from your back, tear the fins from your bones, but all for naught. then you slept. you did not want to wake. but the ocean heard the weak cries of your heart, and carried you to a new home.

you woke to another boat. more sailors. you were terrified. of them. of yourself. one spoke to you, fed you, tended your wounds. you were scared- scared of him. scared of how your heart longed to be healed by him.

later, you would love him. and, later still, you would feel whole again.

PS: The Little Mermaid gets referenced in this story, I’m referring to the original story by Hans Christian Andersen since it fits the story better and also because I didn’t know how to have them watch a Disney animated movie on a Pirate Ship because I’m a fraud.

“Clipse?”

“Yes, my little treasure?”

Eclipse puts down the dust-coated map he had been studying, carefully placing it on a wooden table decorated with various stolen goods and weapons.

“Can ask you a question?”

Eclipse walks over carefully, draping himself over the large armchair his darling was seated at.

“Anything, my sea star.”

“Would you love me more if I was still a Selkie?”

Eclipse froze slightly from the sudden question, he knew that his beloved was very conscious of their monstrous appearance but this was still quite out of the blue. He gently picked them off the armchair, sliding himself onto the chair with them on his lap.

“Now where would you get such a silly idea, treasure?”

“This.”

His love pointed towards a page on the book they had been reading, the Little Mermaid, as Eclipse had suggested to them earlier. Eclipse gently plucked the book out of their hands, examining the page. The page was torn and was a horrid shade of yellow, but the text was still legible.

“Mermaid is so beautiful, yet Prince does not marry her. If I am a monster, how do you like me?”

Eclipse's heart ached at the thought, bringing his precious closer to him. He put the book aside on a nearby table, holding them close.

“My treasure, I love you no matter what. I’m not like some snobbish prince, who just chooses the prettiest one. I love you for who you are.”

His beloved chuckled at the playful insult towards the prince, sending butterflies into Eclipse’s stomach. God, what he would do to see them happy. He caressed their cheek, bringing them in for a kiss.

“You’re beautiful, love.”

His darling smiled happily, leaning into his embrace. Eclipse chuckles, wrapping his arms around them as the room turned so silent, the only noise was the tides of the sea and squabbling crew members above on the deck.

“There’s still some time before we reach McDonough Island for our next plunder, you want to lie in bed with me? I can’t imagine this old chair being too comfortable.”

You’d like that.

You’d like that very much.

I present to you: Alejandro's reveal in the Sea Monster AU in art form!

I wanted to show it off here rather than just as banner art because A) it's really cool and a beloved Christmas gift I've received and B) I realized that with how my blog is currently set up, my profile pic is covering most of Noah. And what's the point of g/t art if you can't see the size difference?

I will say again here that I personally didn't draw this, but rather an anonymous irl bff of mine did, hence the watermark. My own copy is watermark free, so I had to add one myself to give credit where it's due and to deter the art thieves. And when I say add, I mean I had to ask said best friend to guide me through the process step by step like a toddler. But hey, I did a photoedit!

Why is there a storm here when I didn't describe one in the scene before? Well, the art predated me writing the scene. Time will tell if I do decide to actually incorporate a storm when/if I make this into a fic. Either way it still looks really cool.

Enjoy having Noah realize he's in danger! And hoping this doesn't awaken anything in him.

i think he would sing like how a whale does- eerie and echoey and longing- and almost no one ever hears it because in his species, such a special song is reserved for the person he loves. so even though his territory is relatively near the shore, nobody has ever heard his song.

except for you.

it was late in the evening the first time you hear it, a low wailing sound suddenly breaking the monotony of preparing dinner, and on a whim you rush outside, worried that something might’ve happened. instead you find a very happy Foul Legacy, the patterns on his armor and scales glowing brightly in the dim light as he croons for you, swimming over to greet you as you sit on the beach. he’s quick to wrap his tail around your legs, bumping and nudging his head into your hands with a few chirps, like he’s asking if you like his song. he gleams even brighter when you nod, trilling in delight and continuing to sing for you long into the night.

nowadays, you sometimes hear your neighbors complain about hearing whales at night, that they’re too loud and too strange and ghostly sounding, but you simply smile, knowing that it’s your darling Foul Legacy waiting for you to visit him by the sea.

I do love a good mermaid AU, ha. While I initially was just going to do some stuff with a mer-Wesker with a red and black betta tail, I got inspired by Cuphead. So I did this silly thing. Though I imagine Chris brought actual chocolate because I think a lot of us have agreed that Albert has a sweet tooth.

I meant to do more for the background but got kind of tired. The water didn’t turn out quite how I wanted, but its okay from a distance. Not sure how I feel about my attempts at water splashes. They aren’t bad, but they didn’t turn out quite how I hoped.

“Clipse! Look! Barrel seats!”

“Slow down, my treasure! We’ve just entered, don’t make too much noise!”

Today was a special day for Eclipse. As a celebration for their most recent plunder, he decided to bring his crew to the local pub near one of the docks.

It wasn’t frequented by sailors, so he was safe to do as he pleased there without worrying about getting arrested. More importantly, it meant he got to go on an outing with his beloved, which more than made up for the risk.

Sure, some might have seen it as unnecessarily dangerous, but seeing them so happy melted his heart. Especially since he was an infamous pirate, he was sure no one would dare try anything.

He sat down on a repurposed barrel, ordering a pint of beer. He wasn’t too sure how beer might affect his beloved, so he ordered them water.

The cozy lamps, rustic furniture, and general warm feeling were bliss. With his darling sitting on his lap drinking from a small wooden mug, it was even better than bliss.

“Clipse, look drunk.”

“I… hic! not a chance my love, hic! not a chance! I’m… hic! perfectly normal! Just going to… hic! take a nice nap.”

“Goodnight Clipse!”

“Goodnight, treasure… hic!”

Eclipse woke up, his head feeling like hell. God, he should really control his alcohol intake. Peaking out the window, he saw the sun rising. They really spent all night in this pub?

He rubbed his head, getting up from the wooden countertops. He gestured for his darling, only to realize…

Shit.

They weren’t on his lap.

Where were they.

He immediately sobered up, busting out the front door. Where were they?

“Well, would you look at this!”

A voice, from where?

“A sea monster, these don’t come here often. They’ll fetch a pretty price at the market.”

Back of the pub, got it.

Eclipse frantically rushed over before it was too late, finding two disgruntled men looking over his beloved, who was trapped in a net.

Bastards.

“Let’s send them to the market, and see how much gold we can get.”

“Yes sir!”

“I’m sorry, but you’ll only be getting lead for them.”

The two men turned around, to see a very pissed-off Eclipse pointing a flintlock pistol towards them.

“Put them down, and we can forget this whole thing ever happened.”

“And if I don’t?”

“You fucker! You shot him!”

The man was rolled up like a ball on the ground, writhing in pain. His leg had just been shot by a flintlock pistol.

“I warned him. Now unless you wish to join him, move out of my fucking way.”

The man’s face turned pale, dragging his friend away from the aggravated Eclipse. Shoving the two aside, he rushed over to his darling, slicing open the net keeping them trapped with a single swing of his sword.

“My precious treasure, are you alright?”

“Yes…”

“Good, good. Let’s go back to the ship. I’m sorry about all this, I truly am.”

The two walked off, Eclipse carrying them bridal-style as he made his way off this wretched dock, back to his ship.
