What if Seanchai was a bad creature ?

Disclaimer: this contains spoilers from the show and the books (so potential plotlines we have yet to see (or not) in the main series. As always this is a gray point of view.

First the origin of the name/word is very interesting.

Seanchaí (shan-a-key) were traditional Irish storytellers and the custodians of history for centuries in Ireland. They could recite ancient lore and tales of wisdom whenever it was needed [...] In ancient Celtic society, bards held a position of esteem, second only to kings. Bards memorized vast amounts of poetry which they performed live, and their poems and songs were often the only historical record available. Some may consider them to be historians.

This is very in line with the character, Jaskier and the Lark, which I love !

Now let's dig into the character...

We don't know much about Seanchai motivations except that they collect stories through time and gives a little push to bring them back to life when the world needs it. But when they decide it does actually. Are they full neutral ? Hmmm.

First Seanchai appears to Jaskier in two forms. His own and the elven one. As himself, they are uncanny and don't hesitate to slap him for a simple and quite legitimate question in his position and to scare him just after that. Then they appear soft and welcoming in their elven form. Seanchai uses his empathy for the elves and his love for music and storytelling to gain his sympathy. But they forces the conclusion in him from the very beginning.

The Scoi’atel mean well.

Really?

This is strange but I like and dislike one special thing in the show. And I can't decide if it is right or wrong. Yet this is one of the most interesting thing of this series I think.

One of the main theme of BO is the past that is lost and history being rewritten.

In the series, we learn that the elves are not all good. Their history is shady and full of horrors. Yes we follow the adventure of heroic elves who freed the people from the cast system. But we see also that further in the past terrible things lie.

The monoliths that the dwarves used to fertilise their lands came from long before. Balor find their initial purpose : travel through worlds (and Avallac'h that it does through time also - mark my words). But this is sacrilegious for the dwarves who see their belief and culture being twisted.

In the same time Merwyn look up to her ancestors and worships a conqueror. The ancient elves they descending from are tyrans in reality. They crushed other civilisations. And she wants to do the same to save her people.

In the series it's unclear if they are really separating Aen Seidhe and Aen Elle. I hope they will. I will assume they do in the rest of my analysis.

Then we have the Continent in The Witcher time, where humans eradicate non-humans and there are replacing every culture by their own. This is wrong as much as what we learn about the elves in BO and we just scratched the surface. The elves we see persecuted are not bad people per se. The Scoia'tael are a natural response to what is happening. This is a desperate reponse to a desperate situation. But those before them. Those still hidden in the fog of history, are... (And BO just teased them for me)

My problem is not who is good and evil in this particular conflict but Seanchai... They chose to maybe alter history, asking Jaskier to give hope to the elves, reminding them of how they fought to free themselves before.

Sure. But what for ? Minnie Driver said in interviews that Seanchai is an ancient elf. So what prevents them to be a very powerful Aen Elle that kept their knowledge to travel through time. Where did she collect the story she tells Jaskier from ?

Lore wise, I know what they tells is not true, of at least partially. I know that's the writer's take of the lore and they twisted it, but there is another twist to that, and I will get there later.

The only things I am sure:

Meta wise it's a trope. And there is one dialog that made me laugh as horrible as it was. Because Seanchai tries to trick the spectator to watch to the end revealing from the get go what interesting things would be developed in the story.

But if we consider the things just character wise there is a shadow. If this is an Ean Elle, there is a good chance that they wants the Scoia'tael to succeed but for wrong reasons.

Remember that at the end of season 2, Francesca learns the existence of Ciri and she is forming the first occurrences of Scoia'tael (in the series verse). The existence of ancient blood that can carry the hope for her people to reach their ancestors. Their lost powers...

And then we have Jaskier that is time framed by his short human life and empathises with the oppressed because he has a partial knowledge of elven history (and he's been traumatized, let's not forget). And that partial history is only augmented by what Seanchai says to him.

When he hears the prophecy (that it not the correct prophecy for Ciri - that would come later) he is confused but Seanchai reminds him what they want from him. Give hope to the elves. Become the bard that makes people rise as the Lark did in her time.

The prophecy could be interpreted differently. I have seen a lot of part elf Jaskier interpretations (which I understand but not share, at least as Eile descendant). But here is my take of it.

I precise that I don't find this a good idea, as the lore is pretty much fucked up at this point because they took the problem the wrong way round in my opinion. But let see.

The time of the spheres is upon us. The Ean Seidhe lost across the skies => Those are the ones Balor banished in the other world that will become the Wild Hunt. The scout team. (Which is strangely not far from true and totally wrong in the same time 😅)

Cast adrift in time, ever searching for love and left behind => I get that this is for Eredin and his lover. So the motivation for Eredin to have access to Ciri is to find his lover back ? (Hmmmm this is where it goes to strange places for me and forces a love story where none was needed. It was good enough as it was in the first place illustrating the cast problem within the elves society, and we didn't have time to connect with the power of their feelings to make it worth it)

The Lark's seed shall carry forth the first note of a song that ends all times and one of her blood should sing the last => this gives us simultaneously the hint that Eile is the ancestor of Lara Doren who is the ancestor of Ciri. And the fact that Jaskier henerits the strength of Eile in changing the world with his songs.

I take the seed and the song as a metaphores because Eile is a bard and will give birth of the lineage that leads to Ciri. The first note of the song is her story that leads to what Jaskier will do, inheriting her power of storyteller to the masses, and the last is what Ciri is meant to be. She is to be the end of the story, or more exactly the last chapter. The last note of the song.

If I am wrong, then I am wrong 😅.

Why don't I want Jaskier to be special blood wise ? Clearly in BO, the infant of Eile is impregnated with Fjall as a proto witcher, so monster blood. And that makes them so special (Which is twisting some things for the Aen Elle/Seidhe point of view but can still match a little bit). But if Jaskier henerits this blood also, it means that he has a portion of elder blood in him, making him special too.

For me, Jaskier shouldn't be special. This is the fact that he is ordinary that makes him different and so relatable. He is like us, ordinary people. His struggles are human like in a family that is god like. The best witcher, the strongest sorceress, the destiny child... I mean later on, in the books, within the hanza, he is the least special member and has no strength at all, but he endures to stick with Geralt whom he doesn't want to abandon to his impossible quest. Even Milva thought he was going to break. But except for his inflexible loyality and his pursuing of preventing Geralt to stay alone, as he knows the end would be disastrous, he is terribly normal. His personal quest is to help a friend, and this is as beautiful as other things. And in the same time, he is the witness that can write down history afterwards.

Like wise in BO but he just learns history from another, for this part.

But, coming back to the prophecy itself, if I understand clearly, his song, that resurrects the forgotten past of elven heroes, is meant to end all time ! Meaning it will do something that will lead to a catastrophy. Ergo then, making the elves victorious can be disastrous.

But then, while he is confused, Seanchai repeats their will, giving him the task to help the uprising of the elves only. And The Song of the Seven is that. This is just the battle cry of the whole story that has been told to him. What would he do of the rest of it ? I hope something gray that will make us wonder again what is right and what is wrong. Which is something I love in the books. But who knows ? I can't wait S3 to have a little bit more.

But you know ? What is funny in a way is that the series does the exact same thing that every iteration of civilisations did in the witcher world they show us. They rewrite things to tell others, they twist lore. So their message is strange isn't it ? Thinking about how a powerful story can change the world and changing so much to the story that makes it so in the same time. Beautiful paradoxe, isn't it ?

At least, I like that it makes me think a lot. In that I appreciate the witcher series even with its flaws. And I want to know where they are going with it.

Here’s to 15 years of Steve/Tony

Today is not just the Ides of March, but also the 15 year anniversary of the the Wednesday that started it all for Steve/Tony shippers.

The Confession was published Wednesday, March 14th, 2007. March 15th, the following day, is both when I and my wife proposed to one another and the date when the writers of first long Steve/Tony fic, “Resurrection, Reconstruction & Redemption,” began outlining and brainstorming it.

Seanchai can respect this bizarre bard’s unhinged commitment to music. It isn’t everyday they meet someone so passionate about music that they forget to be terrified of them.

Also never forget that Jaskier is gross and covered in blood this whole time

Seanchai: I slip between times, collecting forgotten stories. I bring them back to life when the world needs them.

Jaskier: Look, are you sure you've got the right man for this?

Seanchai: Of course I am. You're the Sandpiper. Smuggler of elves to safety.

Jaskier: The Sandpiper's a name, it's a title, I'm just a bard.

Seanchai: A bard the Scoia'tael risked attacking a Temerian army camp to save. They know you care for them, their struggle for justice.

Jaskier: I do.

This is a Teen Wolf fandom classic for a reason. There's something so captivating about the way this fic flits from one moment in the past to the present, and how all the clues are laid out in front of you and it all culminates into something so gloriously written. One of the best written fight scenes I've ever read. Made me want to learn how to wield a glaive, so that's something.

OMFG! This came across my dash, and given that Jaskier is, like, the most ADHD coded character I've had the pleasure of watching on screen since Jake Peralta, first thing that came to mind was...

"But what if having sex actually is one of the ways that Jaskier has instinctively found to self-medicate, though?"

What if he tends to be able to think more clearly, feel calmer, and be a bit less restless and impulsive after sex?

What if, sometimes, for example, he tends to start a bunch of different new songs at the same time, while struggling with finishing them, and thus feels driven to have sex with someone to help himself focus and complete them?

People with ADHD actually do tend to gravitate towards hypersexuality and hyposexuality (it's not considered an official symptom of ADHD per say, more a co-occurence... Like, I think that among men seeking treatment for hypersexuality issues and problematic porn consumption, they discovered 67% of them had ADHD or something...), and Jaskier's very high sex drive - while not necessarily considered a disorder in itself - is still enough to put him into some serious trouble at times and generate drama in his interpersonal relationships.

I mean, I don't want to call him sexually hyperfixated, but his very first impulse - after the world around him froze and a copy of himself appeared before him - was trying to assess the fuckability of the situation and if he might be into having sex with himself even before asking if he was still alive!

At the very least, it definitely seems that sex might be a coping strategy that he uses to relieve feelings of stress and anxiety.

We've already seen Jaskier go:

to cope with his emotions.

But he just might have this very instinctive:

coping response as well!

In a sense, maybe the way he reacted to Seanchai looking at him was a manifestation of that.

Anxiety going through the roof = Jaskier going:

Poor bard is just going through his life, facing impossible odds, and regularly going:

to manage the crazy levels of stress he's constantly being subjected to.

People think he's being promiscuous because he is irresponsible and immature or something, when the poor bard is just instinctively doing whatever he can to manage his blood pressure, and avoid dying young of some stress-related condition.

Of course, the desired therapeutic effect might be a little offset by the fact that a bunch of nobles tend to want to kill him for having had sex with their spouses and/or relatives... Guess he'll just need to go find someone to sleep with to deal with that stress then... Wait.

Jaskier to Geralt: "I think we should go to Redania... Ciri would have an entire army at her back, and I'd have a really sexy Prince at mine providing me with a steady dopamine, endorphin and oxytocin supply. Seriously Geralt, I'm only human, and if this keeps going, at this rate I won't live past 50!"

Radovid to his brother: "Look, I'm really shit at being a spymaster and a Prince, but years of being very bored and very gay at court have helped me develop a unique type of expertise. And now, I've just discovered there's this one thing - or rather person - that I can do, and do really well! And he's going through some apocalyptic-level stressful shit right now. So, you've got to let me go help him, alright?"

It also would make sense that Jaskier would be so driven to have sex with people, regardless of sexual attraction, if sexual activity happens to be a coping mechanism for him, that can both act as a psychostimulant, and/or as something to help him relieve anxiety, stress, and even the occasional depressive feelings.

In that case, it can also turn into a sort of cycle that becomes self-sustaining, i.e. :

People make him feel shame over his regular need for sex and "promiscuity" - - > it triggers his RSD and emotional insecurities over never being good enough for those he loves, or "too different" - - > he instinctively seeks sex to take his mind off those negative and painful feelings, feel wanted, connected to others, receive praise rather than harsh criticism, and flood his system with stress relieving and "feel good" hormones - - > people make him feel shame over his regular need for sex and "promiscuity" - - > it triggers...

And then, there's Radovid that never reacted negatively to the fact that Vespula was angry at Jaskier over the many, many different people he'd been sleeping with, openly called Geralt "his Witcher", wanted to help him find and rescue the rest of his family...

He's not putting any pressure on Jaskier to stop loving other people or being intimate with them to also be loved and wanted by him.

There are so many ways that Prince/King can help our poor bard manage and relieve his anxiety, including not making him feel wrong or inadequate for having such a need for sex in the first place...

Ironically, the way Radovid's brain works apparently "turns Jaskier on"... but Radovid turning him on - while also making him fell like he is enough - might also help "turn Jaskier off" (as in, help him modulate his overall need for sex in general) if there's less of a need for him to turn to sex to cope with the way his own brain works, and the distress it might occasionally cause him.

As an ex-nurse clinician, it is thus my professional opinion that someone should really officially prescribe some Radovid to Jaskier, to be taken PRN - p.o., as a spoon, intrarectal or however he needs him - and as often as he personally needs him.

It's not a want, it's a need. Someone needs to deliver some Radovid back to him ASAP.

Okay, and now I imagine Geralt just showing up with Jaskier at some point in Tretogor after Yennefer portals them both there, knocking on the castle door, and basically going:

Geralt: Yes, hi. Sorry to bother you. Things have been exceedingly stressful lately, and I have a bard that's been insisting on going back to see an ex-lover...

Jaskier: I'm telling you, it's fine!

Geralt: ...that's threatened to have him beheaded if she ever saw him on her lands again...

Jaskier: I'm sure she didn't mean it!

Geralt: ...and this idiot is willing to risk death...

Jaskier: She's actually really sweet once you get to know her!

Geralt: ...in the hopes that she'll agree to sleep with him.

Jaskier: I'm not even sure if she offered to cut off my head or give me head if she ever saw me again! You know how easy it is to confuse the two...

Geralt: No. No Jaskier, I do not.

Castle Guard: Ah... Yes, so um... what do you need us to do about -

Radovid: *Showing up out of breath, in a robe, with his crown hanging a bit sideways, after he took off running as fast as he could when he caught sight of Geralt and Jaskier approaching the castle from his private chambers' window.* Yeah... Hi... It's okay... *to the guards* I've ... I've... got this...

Jaskier: *Blushes and whines, leaning heavily against Geralt to avoid sliding to the floor at the sight.*

Radovid: *Concerned, to Geralt.* What happened? Is he okay? *Reaches out to Jaskier to hold him in his arms and help support him, looking for any sign of injuries.* Are you hurt?

Geralt: If you could just keep him with you and have sex with him for a few days, I'm sure he'll be perfectly fine!

Radovid: *Dumbstruck* You want me to do what now?

Jaskier: *Starting to kiss and nimble on Radovid's collarbone, insistently pressing himself against him.* Me. Do me. Now.

Radovid: Ah, alright, but we'll need to use the barracks. I'm not running all the way back upstairs!

Geralt: Don't think you'd even manage to make it to the first floor anyway.

Castle Guard: Ah, so, should we... give the order to empty the barracks your Majesty?

Jaskier: *Beginning to slide his hands under his robes.* They could stay and watch, or join in...

Radovid: I'm... not sure if that's the kind of support I'm entitled to expect or ask from the Redanian army, but if some of them want to stay, I guess... Why not?

Jaskier: *Briefly pulling back to look at him, realising he's not put off by, or disapproving of his behavior.* I love you.

Radovid: *Beams back at him.* I love you, too. Marry me?

Geralt: Boy, that escalated quickly!

After being thawed, Steve's adrift in the 21st century. There's nothing for him here, just the endless cycle of pre-packaged food, pointless training exercises, and long hours at the gym. Too bad Tony had to muck everything up by sleeping with him three months beforehand.

When he finally spits into the trash, he doesn’t understand what he’s looking at. Had he managed to swallow a piece of paper without realizing? It’s wet and disgusting, but curiosity gets the better of him as he picks it up gingerly between his fingers. It’s a flower petal, he realizes abruptly, rubbing it carefully as it rolls up and finally crumples between his fingers.

Like losing half the world wasn't enough, Steve's body also begins to rebel against his love for Tony.

The short story is, Tony comes back from a mission.

The long story is, Tony doesn’t come back from a mission and Steve struggles to figure out which of them he's trying to piece back together, in the aftermath.

His life would be a lot easier if he could just stick to painting other things. Landscapes for example. Landscapes were nice.

But then again landscapes didn’t have that glint in their eye, or that body that had been built from hard engineering and years of trying to do good. They didn’t have that inherent charm and good looks that won them Sexiest Man of the Year four times.

By comparison, landscapes were a joke.

Steve causes himself a whole heap of trouble when he starts to paint pictures of Tony.

Tony remembers every nosedive Steve has taken since he’s known him and he gets flooded with fear after the fact, realising how lucky he is that Steve is still alive. Tony can swoop in and pick Steve out of the air when he freefalls, but sometimes there is no line of fire, no bullet showers, nobody trying to kill Steve except himself and Tony has no idea how to save him from that. He doesn’t know if it’s possible to.

Saving Captain America on the field is Iron Man's job. Saving Steve Rogers from himself is not so much Tony's job, but he does it anyway.
