Aziraphale controlled the ball so much. He tried to make it perfect and safe and cute and fun for everyone. But it was all on his terms, his idea of what those concepts mean. And that made it unsettling.
Nina was fully creeped out, and concerned in particular because she knew she should be upset but she wasn't. She wasn't allowed to experience any emotion not sanctioned by Aziraphale.
Everyone spoke the way he thought they should, too; not just the Austen-ian patterns they used, but Aziraphale entirely removed certain words from their reach too - including ones that were vital to people expressing who they were (hmm, analogy to queerness anyone?). Mrs Sandwich had to fight against the constraints of the system to make herself understood (which she achieved! but only after a lot of work).
Aziraphale controlled everything, to make it perfect. To make it work how he thought it should. And it was restrictive and disturbing and awful.
...and if that isn't a clear indication of how Aziraphale will continue to perpetuate harmful constraints once in charge in Heaven, however well-intentioned he may be, I don't know what is.

Let’s Play [Chishiya x Reader]
WARNING: BIG SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 OF ALICE IN BORDERLAND.
CW: Language, canon-typical violence, injury, death etc etc, emotional constipation, no one here is a good person
And again, massive season 2 spoilers, proceed at your own risk.
Chishiya had no need for attachments. Even before coming to the Borderland he tried to shut off those particular emotions, first to deal with the nature his job, and then as he convinced himself that he had no interest in understanding peoples hearts. But, as it happened, attachments weren't swayed by that kind of logic. First it was Kuina, soon becoming a steadfast companion despite his attempts to stay distant, then it was you. He couldn't pinpoint the moment you became a part of his life here in the borderlands, nor when you became more than just another tool to him, and it frustrated him. But still, he found himself searching for your face in the returning crowds from the latest game, and lingering in your presence.
One night, close to the final completion of the pip cards, you found him up on the roof. “Should have known you'd be up here people watching.” You laughed, settling down next to him to study the residents playing in the pool below. His only response was a disinterested hum, but he didn't tell you to leave which was as close to a welcome as you tended to get from him. “Do you think they're right?” You asked after a moment, “Do you think collecting all the cards is really the way to get back?” He considered it for a moment before shrugging. “Who knows?  It's a logical train of thought.” “You know... I'm not sure I'll be able to survive in that world, even if we do get back.” You sighed, eyes carefully trained on the figure of Kuina as she made her way through the crowd. “And why would that be?” “Surviving here... it changes you. Haven't you noticed?” You breathed out a long breath, leaning back on your elbows. “Maybe it's different for you, but I don't even bat an eye at death any more. The last game... I watched someone kill themselves in front of me, because of me, and I didn't even care. I'm not sure I remember who I used to be, I don't know if I could go back.” Chishiya sighed, sounding every bit exasperated at you. His hand shot out, grabbing your chin and forcing you to look at him. “You're the best hearts player at the Beach. You'll adapt, no matter what.” You stared at him in shock, but Chishiya merely nodded once, returning his gaze to the people below.
The pip cards, as it turned out, weren't the end of things. Just the first stage of the games. You had been so, so wrong when you thought things couldn't get much worse than the ten of hearts, a message driven home almost immediately by the King of Spades. You watched in horror as the car holding the last of your comrades disappeared behind a blast of flame, your body barely shielded by the car you dived behind. You glanced over at Chishiya and sighed. “New day, same old shit huh?” “Seems like it. We should move.” You nodded, following him quietly between the cars and away from the devastation. Things continued like that for a while. Sometimes you would enter the face card games together, sometimes Chishiya would insist you stayed back. You didn't argue with him, and he grew to appreciate your company even more than he had before. Things seemed to be going well, until they weren't.
Two face cards left. The King of Spades and the Queen of Hearts. You'd finally found the others after what seemed like forever apart, then Niragi crashed the party. You could only watch in horror as Chishiya took the bullet meant for Usagi, feeling for the first time since the games started, hurt. You eyes narrowed, reaching for the gun at your hip to blast the former Beach resident away, when the sound of gunfire in the distance pulled you from your rage. “The King. I'll get him somewhere safe, you two run.” You snapped, practically shoving Usagi and Arisu away as you ran to Chishiya's side. “You know, you should get to shelter too.” “Shut up and let me move you. I'll be just fine.” You huffed, helping him move behind a car. “Stay alive, I'm coming back for you once we kill this bastard.” He just nodded, one hand pressed against his wound as you turned and headed for where the others had grouped.
The plan had seemed so good, everyone using their best skills seemed like a surefire way to win. Hell, even Aguni had made an appearance, bringing with him an extra ray of hope. You had been so convinced that you could do this, that you would all survive... you didn't stop to consider the Kings almost inhuman strength and durability. It was a massacre. Chishiya could only watch through the car wing mirror in horror as you were thrown backwards by the force of his gunfire, your torso splattered with red, saved only from certain death by the kid with the arrows. Great, he owed her a favour now and she wouldn't even know why. His horror only increased as you dragged yourself upright, throwing a knife towards the man. He struggled against his injuries, trying to haul himself to his feet only to collapse with a groan. He could only watch as you went down again, only this time you didn't get up, but he couldn't take his eyes off you, watching for any signs of life. As the store exploded you were sent tumbling across the ground, but it seemed to wake you. Groaning, and a little singed, you crawled the rest of the way towards the car where you'd left Chishiya, collapsing against the metal beside him as you waved Arisu and Usagi off to the final challenge. “You think they'll do it?” You asked, leaning against his shoulder. “Probably.” “Good. I want to get the fuck out of here now.”
You awoke in hospital, confused and a little frightened, a nurse looking over you. “What happened?” You croaked, wincing when the movement sent a burst of pain down your side. “You were involved in the disaster in Shibuya, your heart stopped for a while but we managed to bring you back.” The nurse smiled kindly down at you. “Is there anyone I can call for you?” You started to shake you head, only to pause and murmur the details of your closest living relative. The nurse nodded, smiling again. “I'll do that. Don't worry, you'll be on your feet again before you know it.” Several days later you were finally allowed to wander around on your own. Escaping to the garden you spotted two men playing cards at a table, making your way over you paused by them, smiling softly. “Do you mind if I join?” The dark haired man, his face still covered with bandages nodded. “Sure. You can't be worse company than this asshole.” Laughing you took a seat beside the blonde, your breath catching in your throat when he turned to look at you. He stared back, a flash of recognition in his eyes for just a second. “Um, sorry if this sounds rude, but have we met before?” The blonde shook his head. “I don't think so.” “I'd certainly remember if I'd met someone as gorgeous as you before.” The bandaged man cut in, his grin edging towards a leer. “I just feel like I know you...” you murmured, “ah, never mind, maybe we should get to know each other then?” Both men nodded, picking up their cards as you grabbed your own stack. “Let's play.”

The Matchbox Trick
When I watched through season 2 for the first time, I made notes as I went along, because I'd seen that Neil wanted this to be a mystery story, and he'd wanted the episodes to be released weekly to encourage discussion and theorising. Most of my notes were jumbled and half-formed thoughts that I scribbled down before eagerly hitting 'next episode', so there's very little considered writing in there. But one of my theories I was certain on from the beginning was that of the matchbox trick.
This is a long post, so the explanation is below the cut:
The Trick
For those that don't know, the matchbox trick is a very simple example of sleight of hand magic. You have an empty matchbox, the magician puts something into it (say, a coin), says the magic words, and the thing vanishes from the box! Then they say the magic words again, and it reappears! Magic.
If you don't know how it's done: very simply, the inner box of the matchbox is divided in half, and when saying the magic words, the sleight of hand is to spin the box round, so that the other half is shown instead, whether that's empty (it disappeared!) or full (it reappeared!).
The Hints
I first thought that this season might be a matchbox trick when Gabriel's matchbox first appeared on screen - after all, it's clearly important, there's a mystery to be solved, Muriel seems shocked by it, and we know Aziraphale's a magician. I thought it'd be a trick that plays out on screen, and he'd be the one to figure it out.
I was even more convinced of it when Michael examined the box for the first time. Because she doesn't just open it at one end to see if it's empty - she opens it at both, one after the other. And yet she doesn't take the whole inner box out (that would reveal the divider and give the trick away). So I was certain this was Neil/Douglas/the team giving us a clear but subtle set-up that there would be a matchbox trick this season.
Then there are other references/hints dotted throughout the season, too:
In episode 3, the Resurrectionist pub sign has two sides to it - Aziraphale only notices one on the way in, but we're shown both, and then he notices the other one on the way out. We're being shown how the trick is done, even if the characters in the show don't understand it yet.
In episode 4, Aziraphale performs another, slightly different sleight of hand magic trick by replacing the photograph in the envelope with a pamphlet instead. This is a slightly weaker link to the specific trick of the matchbox, and arguably the gun trick has just as much sleight of hand (mouth?) in it, but since it's close-up magic I thought it was relevant, like Neil saying to us: 'close-up sleight of hand tricks are important here'.
And of course, empty matchbox, empty cardboard box, empty archangel mind. There seemed to be a thread between the three, so I thought the 'important thing to prevent something terrible happening' would be in the cardboard box, and Gabriel's memories would still be in his head, you just needed to metaphorically turn him around to get them to reappear.
So I spent most of the season convinced that Gabriel's 'empty' cardboard box with a 'this way up' sign on it held an extra-dimensional space that could only be accessed by opening it upside down (the arrows pointing downwards, the direction he'd metaphorically gone from Heaven).
And I was... half right. You did in fact need to flip the box over to figure out the trick. But you didn't need to open it, the answer was just scrawled on the bottom. Huh. Okay, fair enough. Close enough.
The Theory
I was willing to accept that half-right was close enough on the cardboard box front. Maybe the attention to the matchbox was just telling us to flip it over, not open it upside down. Maybe Michael opening both sides of the matchbox didn't really mean what I thought it meant at all, it was just a coincidence or a red herring or the only thing important about it was its existence, not it being opened. Maybe the way the show highlighted the text on the matchbox was meant to hint that you should look for writing on the cardboard box, and that was all.
Then I read this meta by @ariaste. Now, I'm not sure I fully believe in it (I've been burned before by complex fan theories), but it's certainly thorough and convincing. And if it is correct... then maybe the matchbox trick was intended to be there, as yet another setup with no payoff. Maybe it's another clue that things aren't all what they seem.
Maybe the whole of Season 2 is a vanishing act - on Gabriel, on memory, on Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship - and the answer, all that's been lost, will be returned to us in Season 3. When the quote on the matchbox will make sense, when all of the dropped threads and setups-with-no-payoffs will be cascaded into action, when the box will be opened rather than only flipped over without anything being revealed.
Maybe this is nonsense rambling. Maybe I'm seeing details that aren't there. But either way, I trust Neil. Season 3 will be worth it, I believe that much. Everything will be okay in the end.

Plan 99
Tech (Bad Batch) x Reader
A/N: I refuse the ending of that season, no thank you so I have fixed it. Spoilers for the finale season 2!
The Jedi heard Tech’s voice from where they were standing next to Echo on the rail car, barely able to stay upright as the group continued to fight for their lives, but the moment they heard those words from Tech’s mouth they no longer cared what they were doing.
“Plan 99!”
Those dreaded words. An agreement the Batch had before they had become their General and before they had even seen a second of battle. Plan 99 was more of a code phrase than a real plan. A simple agreement that the rest simply had to trust and respect whatever decision the Batcher was making. It was the final say on any matter, it wasn’t something they used lightly.
And hearing Tech say those words while hanging from the train card, gun pointing at the only part of the train keeping them together, spurred them into action. The moment his blaster fired the Jedi felt through the force, through the turmoil, fear, and stress the entire group was feeling, and grabbed onto Tech through the force, barely moving him in time to miss the half of the falling rail car before propelling him up, roughly through the force. They didn’t have the time to make sure he was gently placed, all thoughts tied into just making sure Tech stayed alive.
Through the loudness of the battle, the Jedi was unsure if they had screamed or even said anything as Wrecker grabbed Tech and Omega steadied the Jedi. But as soon as they seemed to be safe the group found themselves rushing in the car as they were then all sent speeding the other way. The last thing the Jedi remembered before hitting their head was Hunter reaching for Omega.
Waking up to the darkness of the Marauder’s bunk room, the Jedi’s heart was immediately racing as they stumbled out of their bunk. The room’s light was dimmed, and the Jedi just barely could make out that Hunter and Omega were resting on one of the lower bunks as they began racing towards the cockpit. Their thoughts were racing as the memories were starting to come back, it had been so long since they had used the force that strongly, and the sudden worry that it wasn’t enough was beginning to bubble and surface.
“Where-” They started, as Tech suddenly appeared in front of them grabbing their shoulders, steading them.
“Everyone’s on board the Marauder, you’re okay. Both you and Omega were knocked out and we are-” The Jedi quickly cuts Tech off with a harsh slap, leaving his goggles skewed and his thoughts scattered. Before he can even question why, he sees the tears welling in the Jedi’s eyes, in his Jedi’s eyes.
“Plan 99?” They hissed and immediately Tech sees them become undone. Gone was their cool and collective Jedi General, and all that was left was a scared individual who almost lost their partner only a few hours ago. Tech looks to see Hunter’s eyes peeking at the two of them so he quickly moves his hand to grab their arm and gently pull them into the fresher, at least there they could have privacy from peering eyes, even if Hunter could still hear them.
“I know, but at that moment I-”
“You what? Wanted to play the hero!” They seethed. “Tech, there were other ways out of that situation, and you were ready to kill yourself! Did you have any regard for what they might do to the squad? To Omega? To me?” Tech listened as their voice cracked on their last thought. He closed his eyes as he gently pulled them into his chest, for a moment he thought they’d pull away and then they engulfed them closer.
“May I explain?” He asked softly, he listened for them as they sighed and then nodded against his chest. He was glad the first thing he had done was rid himself of his armor when they were back on board so he could really hold them. “As selfish as it may seem at that moment my greater concern was keeping you and the others alive. I…I was scared and worried and I had already suspected my death would be on the battlefield either protecting or with my brothers.” He felt them pull him tighter as he stroked their back, trying to reassure them that he was still alive and with them. “Then you came along, and I allowed myself to think outside of the war and even now with the idea of Pabu, the thought is even stronger. We could live a normal life, and as selfish as it is I would die a thousand deaths before I could ever watch your own.”
“Tech-”
“I know it’s selfish and unfair to you, but at that moment I thought what I was doing was right. I see that, even though I would do it again in a heartbeat if it meant keeping you safe, it isn’t fair to you, and I am very sorry.”
“No more Plan 99.” They mumbled, pulling away slightly, just enough so they could make eye contact. He found himself trapped in their glance, just as he had been the first time they had met and there was a flashing thought that the rail car could’ve been their last moments together. That they could have watched him die, helplessly.
“Promise me, no more Plan 99. Even if it’s to save me, especially if it’s to save me.”
“What if-”
“No more, what if’s, Tech. We get Crosshair back and that’s it. No more Plan 99’s.” They begged ever so softly. He sighed and gently cupped their cheek.
“No more, I promise.” He murmured, sealing his promise with a soft kiss.

rowan is. and interesting guy.
frankly, i never liked him. i TRIED to like him, but he always came off as just… meh. like just plain, even before he was bird psycho.
but gradually (and through a dangerous mixture of headcanon), i feel the same way i feel towards him as i did dusty.
they’re both, objectively, horrible people. but they have… reasons.
dusty isn’t rlly touched upon, but his behavior can definitely be attributed to his parents seeming to be very lenient with him. he seems to have the mentality that he’s untouchable for all of season 1, and yeah, still hate him, but it’s weirdly realistic, and so it’s pretty intriguing. a lot of people write him off as pure evil, and i’m not seeing he’s innocent, but again, there’s layers. like an onion (smelly layers).
rowan i feel was failed by the writing of this season in general. his backstory with amerie comes out of NOWHERE, but at the same time, when you look back, a lot of puzzle pieces connect, which makes you go “ahhhh” looking back. that’s definitely a drawback for his character, the lack of backstory and sense, and there’s already been a handful of arguments on how as a character who’s been traumatized to point of hallucination was handled pretty poorly.
my view on how it could expanded (through headcanon) is that it’s clear that rowan is driven by this desire to get revenge on amerie, but it’s clear he lacked planning due to him not seeming to go much further than just trying to get amerie to admit he’s the reason jett died, when in reality, it was no one’s fault. but it’s hard to really come to that conclusion, so amerie feels an obligation to be there for rowan out of pity and fear, trying to find salvation in someone who needs more than just company. he needs help, and rowan probably comes to realize this, but is too scared to push amerie or anyone away again.
this is. a lot of headcanon, but i’m trying my best to mound statues out of piles of shit over here
