Jermaine

Poor Jermaine lost in a close matchup to his Mrs (Carla). Four losses in a row doomed him. To make matters worst. If this streak keeps going, he could end up in last place for the season! This is after Oliver went 0-10 🤦All Jermaine can do to save face is win at least one more game so the 4th game can prevent him from being last.

Ricky

Slick falls to 4-8 to top ranked Matt in Witching Week 12. In most leagues, he would be in play by a thread but Sleeper is so top heavy, it virtually eliminated him from the playoffs. Whole in 8th, he could finish in 7th when its all said and done as the team that just misses the playoffs if its any consolation. He won't finish last based on his 4 wins.

To add to the misery, both teams play each other in week 13. Well....misery loves company I suppose 🤷

Haunting Week 13 isn't so spooky...

Only 7 teams remain in play. Only one team is sweating it out but one false move by the some of the current playoff teams could mean an upset.

Aside from that we had two teams clinch:

Matt

Matt is firmly in 1st place thanks to a big time performance from QB of the week Jalen Hurts. It doesn't "hurt" that he eliminated a competitor in the process (Ricky). Matt is showing his dominance in this league as well. At 9-3 he will look to continue his roll by clinching a bye week if he wins one more game.

Carla

Carla eliminated her hubby (Jermaine) in a sticky important matchup. Bad for him but great for her. She too clinched at 9-3. Carla has stayed strong throughout the entire season and it's paid off with a postseason clinch. Like Matt, a win gets her a bye week guarantee.

Both Matt & Carla play 7-5 teams in haunting week 13. Those teams each have their own story on desperately wanting to beat them for thier potential clinching.

Laura

Laura is on the outside looking in 7th place position and the ONLY team not in the playoffs to have a shot to sneak past and in. Since so many teams were eliminated (most of any Core 4️⃣ Leagues including randoms), Laura can keep winning and hope for tiebreaks and/or losses to get her in. Hoping to avoid the "Commissioner Curse" of this season [see Taurean ILL FL], Laura must win out unless:

Any one or multiple 4way tie of 7-5 teams lose out and she wins out. It only takes one

Any one or multiple 4way tie of 7-5 teams lose at least one game and she gets in through a tiebreaker scenario

Laura does NOT control her own destiny. Even if she wins out, if those 4 teams somehow win out as well (if they don't play each other), then she will have a winning record but out of the playoffs. Thats gotta sting if that happens.

The commish Laura can play spoiler on her way in by beating Taurean.

Both current Wildcards (Taurean and Johnny) have less PF than Lady Laura. One false move by either or both could spell doom for them.

A .500 team can make it in as no less than that record will apply. Wins and losses are being watched 👀 closely by Laura.

Delmar has had some wild swings in this league. From worst to first to middle of the pack. An up & down year for Delmar who historically hasn't done well (reoccurring theme) but has really improved this season. He is in 3rd at 7-5 due to a loss to Laura talked about previous. That close game opened up the gambit for the last remaining playoff spots. His PF are fair but wins matter here on out. He has an uphill climb against Carla in haunting week 13. Could a slip up send him on a path to elimination?

Taurean

Taurean could have won maybe if he didn't have Chicago Defense on the bench. That wrong play gave Oliver his first win of the season at the cost of Taurean being able to be in a better position to clinch. Now he goes against the commish who is desperately not trying to join him in the commish curse path. Is this where the slip begins? He's been hovering in contention most the season. Could smell an upset. With him in 6th and Laura nipping at the heels...this is the matchup to watch.

Juan

Just talking about Taurean as the worst team last week in a loss to a winless team, the opposite trend for Juan is happening. Juan was way down per usual but turned the corner and won 4 straight (tied with the commish as the most in a row) to allow him to control his destiny and break the proverbial glass ceiling. Juan is hell bent to get in this time. His current trend will be tested against 1st place Matt in Haunting week 13.

Johnny

After leading the league the first 5 weeks, he finds himself lost in the shuffle in 5th place as a wildcard. No more "Reign" over the league, Johnny has been up and down all season since. He must win out to keep pace and stave off his wifey from pulling the Sleeper upset against him. After getting the biggest beat down yet from a surging Juan, Johnny looks to get back on track against an old coworker Oliver. He doesn't want to be the 2nd to fall to the last place team like his wildcard mate Taurean. This could spell disaster. Should he win 2 more, he will make damn sure people ACKNOWLEDGE him.

I think I’m doing pretty good progress wise, please be patient with me as I continue to try to review old boxes~

“October is here, bringing with it those spooky Halloween vibes! Halloween has been growing in popularity in recent years, and since Japan loves their seasonal snacks we had plenty of new, interesting items to choose from! In the spirit of being spooky but kinda cute, we’ve created a Poke-Monster Night for you to enjoy! No sharing these tricky snacks though!“

For this months contest, the winner could receive figures of Naruto and Sasuke from Naruto, while runner-ups won a cute pokeball candy and stamp. Lucky Treat consisted of Full Metal Alchemist, Dragon Quest, AND three devil fruits from One Piece, the Gomu Gomu (Gum), Mera Mera (Flame), and Ope Ope (Operation. Also, they accidentally mislabeled as the “dark dark fruit”). I was very excited that they included the 3 belonging to 3 of my favorite characters~

Pokemon Ramune & Strange Syrup DIY

For this month, we get a basic, straight-laced ramune drink. Thank goodness :P as much as I like to try new flavors, sometimes I forget the original is probably the best... especially in comparison to those yucky flavors that I’m still traumatized by <_< and this month we even get a really cute pokemon label.

Ramune is basically that “soda“ flavor you’ll see in Japanese candy. It has a sweet, sort of lemon-ish taste but its not sour. It’s a little like sprite, but in my opinion it tastes way better. It’s especially yummy whenever it’s warm out or if you worked up a thirst. It’s also really fun to open because of the marble inside!

If you have ever wanted to try out Ramune, I would suggest checking on Amazon (they have a variety of fruit flavors too), or maybe the Japan Haul website (the website made through Tokyo Treat and its various brands).

The DIY I just included a bonus pic of because I’ve done it several times. It’s a super-sticky, thick syrup like candy that only requires you to mix the 3 flavors, which are strawberry, soda, and lemon. Together they make grape... which looks like this:

Because this candy was a little old, I think it was a bit off. The lemon and soda flavors were fine, but I noticed that not only was strawberry orange instead of pink, which might explain this... greenish-honey color. It’s usually a little purple if I recall.

Also, it didn’t really taste like grape this time, and it wasn’t as good in my opinion- but I guarantee if you open it as soon as you get it, it tastes much better. If you don’t like sticky/gooey textures you might wanna skip this one though.

Halloween Milk Senbei & Bloody Cola Marshmallow

Since I subscribed like 3 years ago, I’ve only seen senbei in a box once; I was very excited to see it again! It’s stuff like this I wish they would include more of, because I want to try the unique foreign flavors you know?

Anyway, the milk senbei is a plain, very thin melt-in-your mouth cracker-like snack that pretty much tastes like ice cream cone, but a teensy bit sweeter. This one comes with a cola flavored sauce to put on top of it. Each 1 (or one pack, not sure) is around 25-27 calories.

I really like the taste of ice cream cones, I don’t know why, I just always have. Meanwhile, the jelly/sauce is purple, but it indeed tastes like cola ♥ it’s very yummy. However... together, they get a strange taste and that I’m not very fond of. I can’t even describe it, but its weird. But eating it in small doses is tolerable.

Speaking of cola, we also got a really cute marshmallow filled with a cola jelly! It’s like they combined two of my favorite things~

It’s very soft and yummy, the jelly inside tastes about the same as the sauce from the prior item, but it tastes so much better with the marshmallow.

Apple Pie Kit Kat & Brown Sugar Sweets

Instead of orange kit kats this year, we get to see fun purple one :D these kit kats are inspired by an apple pie. As you can see they also come in a large pack to share with others or to eat yourself. Each pack is 65 calories.

I love the coloring of these, first of all. It’s such a pretty purple, and its fun too. The apple flavor is very prominent, and it has a very small hint of spice, while the wafer brings to mind a sugary crust. It’s sweet, but mildly.

These are popular for their melty and soft texture, with a very thin, crisp layer of rich brown sugar coating. Each one of these is 17 calories.

These are kinda basic, but it’s a yummy sweet that isn’t overly sugary. I think it goes good with the apple pie kit kat, and maybe some milk.

Disappearing Taste?! Mixed Gummies, ZomB Grape Gum, & Blue Green Soda Gum

We got 3 gums this month! Our first is very familiar, because we’ve had this gum before. The only difference is this is its washed out, slightly different cousin. Basically, you’re given a set of flavors of gum, in this case yogurt, strawberry, orange, and white grape/muscat. You can eat them as is, or mix the flavors to make new ones, like a fruit drink, melon soda, or different fruits.

What makes this one special however, is that there is a special gumball that supposedly makes the flavor disappear? I mean, isn’t that what gum does normally?

This gum is really nice, you get a lot of them per-resealable pouch, and the flavors are always pretty good. Plus I like how the gum is smooth and soft in texture. I didn’t really notice any difference with this one from the last pack I had other than flavors.

Next up, we have the ZomB Gum; a popular Halloween item that we have seen before; I think about 2 or so years back, when we got the red cola vampire version. What makes this gum really fun is that it colors your tongue as you chew it, and it has a delicious grape flavor.

This gum has the same texture as the other gum, so I really like it. The color effect isn’t nearly as strong as the package shows, but it’s a cute little gimmick, and it tastes great. The flavor lasts about 5 minutes.

Our last gum is another brand I’ve had before. I have had both this flavor, and their cola version. It’s pretty much the same concept as the ZomB gum (they’re made by the same brand), but its in two sticks and you get a soda flavor, and a melon flavor.

I’d pretty much say the same things as I did about the previous two gums. All three were delicious and I would recommend any of them.

Poteco Pumpkin Gratin & Pringles

Here we have two salty, savory snacks for the box. But of course, the Poteco are not new to us, in fact I think last Halloween we got the exact same pack; minus slightly different packaging. Poteco is good and all, but I got so tired of seeing it that I tend to... shy away from it now. This flavor wasn’t really that different from the original/normal Poteco either.

I was a lot more excited for this item, a unique pack of Japanese Pringles :D Looking at the package, this is a type of ramen or noodle bowl flavor. It’s a mystery item in the booklet so I’m not really sure, but for this small can it is 267 calories!

Honestly, these are so yummy that I don’t even care how many calories there are. The flavor is very strong, it tastes exactly like this cup ramen I like to buy. Trying to describe the flavor, I would say it’s sort of like beef or soy sauce broth, with a hint of a corn taste?

Pokemon Halloween Chocolate & Pikachu Gummies

These are both snacks we’ve had before, so I’ll try to just gist this one.

These crispy snacks are shape like pikachu heads and come in fun, colorful packaging featuring a variety of Pokemon, while the back usually has a fun puzzle or image. Each bag is 83 calories and they are by the brand Tohato.

These are really yummy x3 they have a slightly bitter chocolate taste and remind me a lot of the coco crispy cereals.

The other snack is also pikachu-shaped, but besides its head, there are also the occasional tail you might find ;3 These are by Lotte, and each pack is 90 calories. The flavor is grape and they taste really good too.

The only real thing to bother me about these is that they didn’t cut the gummy around Pikachu’s ears. It’s a minor thing but it bothers me a little.

Halloween Corn Potage Umaibo

Okay, so... because I talk about this a lot, I’m not actually planning on saying anything about it this time :P long story short, corn potage Umaibo is the best.

Squid Legs & Halloween Pizza Corn Snack

Don’t let the name fool you, these are not real squid legs- they just have a fishy taste. I’ve had these before too, and I have fairly complex feelings about them. On one hand they don’t taste terrible, but I don’t like seafood and the flavor is still unappealing to me. I like their crunchy texture though.

Next up is this corn puff snack featuring a delicious pizza flavor! They taste exactly like the pizza-flavored combos, if you never had those before I would recommend them too~

Pokemon Cola Chewing Candy

This is our final item... and now that I look at it, it kinda looks like a wafer cookie doesn’t it?

Anyway, these are sticks of chewing candy that come in various series and flavors. Before we had some grape Thomas the Tank Engine ones, and this time we get some cola Pokemon. Each wrapper usually includes a unique design, craft, or puzzle of some sort.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ I don’t know if these are hard because they had to sit around for a while, or because that is just how they are. I don’t remember the Thomas ones being so hard, but they weren’t as thick as these. But if you suck on them for a few minutes they soften up, or you can crunch them to softness. The flavor is very yummy, I think it might be my favorite cola flavored item in the box.

Content - 4.5 out of 5. Everything is very yummy, even though a fair amount of it was repetitive. I really liked it. Theme - 4 out of 5. Well, given the packaging and theme, I could say yeah they did pretty good. We had a decent amount of Pokemon items, but they could have done a little more too I think. Total Rank: 9 out of 10. I really liked this box, I just wish maybe we would have had a couple more unique items.

The Curious Case of Comets

Comets. Fascinating dirty snowballs in space. The apparent symbol for the Dark Kingdom, suspected hidden power source of Varian’s, and possible origin of the Dark Kingdom’s opal. Here, I share some cool info about why these celestial bodies are so interesting, as well as a fun, personal insight how our favourite alchemist may parallel them in some ways; possible support for the Comet!Varian Theory?

(Whoever came up with this theory first, I wish to credit you!)

UPDATE 1.1 few fixes and new thoughts. Probably more after tent-pole episode

Part 1: The Science (Sources: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12)

- Comets are small celestial bodies composed of ice, dust and rock. Also contains multiple forms of organic compounds and gasses (e.g. carbon dioxide, amino acids, methane, ammonia, etc.)

- Observational studies, such as the splitting of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 and 73P/Schwassmann-Wachmann, and space missions (e.g. Deep Impact, Rosetta), help suggest that comets are very fragile objects! Some of the suspected mechanisms behind splitting nuclei include tidal splitting, direct impact, thermal stress, and internal gas pressure (more about splitting mechanisms here). The internal structure, however, is a topic still left up for debate.

- Comets start out dark and frozen in deep space. Upon reaching the inner solar system, they begin to heat up, outgas, and brighten. The sublimated gasses form an ‘atmosphere’ around the nucleus called the Coma. Eventually, the comet forms two tails. The Ion (or Gas) Tail is a result of ionized (removal of electrons) molecules from the coma, and is pulled away by solar wind along magnetic field lines. They appear narrow and blue in colour, and always point straight, away from the sun. The Dust Tail appears long and curved, and also is influenced by solar wind.

- If the Coma is mostly composed of Cyanogen (CN) and/or Diatomic Carbon (C2), UV Radiation will cause these gasses in the Coma to glow green or teal (blue-green). Examples of comets that appeared this way: Comet Hyakutake (1996), 109P/Swift-Tuttle, 2P/Encke, C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy.

- Some observers use the teal/green colour as an indicator that the comet is in an active phase, where experiencing outbursts are high, and that parts of its nucleus is more vulnerable to splitting apart! Such events, however, are rare.

- There are currently 3,564 comets observed and named, but only a small fraction become naked eye visibility, with even less receiving the title of Great Comet (Those that become exceptionally bright! e.g. Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997). There are possibly trillions beyond the orbit of Neptune waiting to be discovered!

- Comets travel in highly elliptical orbits, each one varying in time to make one revolution. Short Period comets (e.g. Halley’s Comet) originate from the Kuiper belt, and are guaranteed to return within 200 years. Long Period comets (e.g. Hale-Bopp) take much longer and may not return for thousands of years! They sometimes appear as the most spectacular to view, due to its abundance of volatiles from their minimal visits to the solar system. Can be found in the Oort Cloud. Sungrazers get very close to the sun upon perihelion (closest distance from sun). They usually evaporate away if they have a small mass. However, there are a rare few that actually survive the trip.

- More frequent visits to the solar system results in more of the comet’s volatiles and contents getting lost, eventually leaving a rocky core behind!

- Scientific theories portray comets as both the destroyers (e.g. younger dryas), and the creators of life (e.g. emergence of life billions of years ago).

Part 2: Legends and Superstitions (Sources: 1, 2)

- Due to their unpredictable natures and appearances, many ancient cultures saw comets as a message from their gods, and an omen for impending disasters and negative superstitions.

- Ancient legends also helped fuel this negative association with comets (e.g. The Babylonian “Epic of Gilgamesh” describing about floods and fire once a comet arrives).

- They were also blamed for some of history’s darkest moments (e.g. Julius Caesar’s death, the Black Death in England)

- Cause of scares: When Halley’s Comet returned in 1910, a rumour spread about a poisonous gas being emitted from the comet. People rushed to grab gas masks and other innovative objects, such as ‘anti-comet’ umbrellas, to help them avoid the supposed danger.

- Natal chart superstition: If comets are present within a person’s natal chart at birth, the person “could be an innovative thinker, and could be associated with shocks, too. These people may carry out actions to release or may have an overwhelming influence over large groups. Their attitude and traits may be unpredictable.”(Rod Chang, 2014)

Fun Facts:

- The word, Comet, comes from the Greek word, komētēs, meaning “long-haired (star)”. The Icelandic word, halastjarna, translates as “tail star”, which the Chinese referring to them “long-tailed pheasant stars”, “broom stars,” and “vile stars”.

- Asteroid 2015 TB145, theorized to be an extinct comet, looks just like a skull!

- Just for fun - Colour Scheme: Black nucleus, Blue ion tail, Grey/Yellowish-White dust tail, sometimes Teal/Green Coma.

- Debris left behind by comets are responsible for some of Earth’s annual meteor showers! (e.g. Perseids, Orionids, Leonids)

Connections/Parallels with Varian

Now finally, for the fun part.

First of all, the Moon theory, created by @ghosta-r , is great! Really well-analysed and has strong evidence (also, please read @nyxglitch ‘s post, it’s very well-done!). However, there is still that feeling where Canon appears to be bringing lunar symbolism towards a different direction, or a different character. Assuming the hints from “Vigor the Visionary” are pointing towards the Dark Prince theory (created by @forever-tangledup), it may be the crew wish to present the sun/moon relationship in a more romantic direction. There is a chance, however, one or two theories end up being true, or none at all in the end, but it does not stop the fun of speculation before they’re officially debunked!

Keep note, these are just my opinions, and fun personal take on Varian’s potential comet parallels, and you are free to disagree with them.

1. Omens for disaster:

A.) This one, I felt, was pretty obvious. Varian has been labeled “a dangerous wizard” in “What the hair”, and in the second half of season 1, was being labelled as “dangerous” in general. It seems that both Varian and comets are the go-to things to place blame for negative superstition. However, Varian did rightfully earn his first title for his unpredictable experiments-gone-wrong.

B.) Interestingly, this negative reputation shares a similar parallel with opals being associated with “bad luck” and other superstitions.

2. Colour palette:

A.) From the colours identified, I feel that a majority, more specifically, ¾ colours match up with Varian (Blue, Black, Teal). I do admit, however, that the colours of his shirt and hair stripe can be very tricky to the eyes sometimes. In some scenes, it appears blue, while in others, it appears greener; I even had trouble deciding which colours to use while making my cosplay. On the other hand, I think it may be safe to say that the colours are more in the blue-green region.

B.) The yellowish-white colours appear more prominently when the comet has released enough gas and dust to reflect the sun’s light, usually when it is getting close to perihelion. This tends to dull out the teal colours of the coma most times.

C.) Most of us would probably not be familiar with green comets; Most of the Great Comets talked about in the news are white and bright, and this is due to its close approach to the sun and/or the size of its nucleus (with the exception of Hyakutake, which was small, but made a very close approach to earth). A majority of comets are much fainter, and barely make it to impressive naked eye visibility, thus don’t make the headlines as much.

3. Messenger of the gods: Ok, deities are not really presented, nor do they play much of a role in the series, so this may be a weak point. However, the first thing that came into my mind was Varian’s appearances in Rapunzel’s nightmares. More specifically, the one where Varian delivers the message to “face [her] destiny” or all will be lost. I suppose in a metaphorical sense, the rocks (the gods) send Varian (the messenger/comet) to deliver Rapunzel an important message.

4. Elliptical orbits (one that will be difficult to explain :p):

A.) @mycove has mentioned in a recent post that the comet’s elliptical orbit describes Varian’s relationship with Rapunzel and her friends: sometimes far, sometimes close. Everyone started out as friends in the beginning, but as season 1 came to an end, Varian became very cold and distant from the group.

B.) Comets remain dark and invisible until they reach a certain distance within the inner solar system, where they increasingly receive solar energy to finally shine. This is similar to what @nyxglitch described Varian and the Moon in their post: “small and insignificant… also cold and duels in the night, yet needs the sun in order to shine, otherwise it is eclipsed and left in the dark.” Almost every object in the solar system needs the sun to shine light on them in order to make a noticeable appearance in the night sky. In terms of plot, Varian’s biggest relevance and actions, being a plot device, occur when he is more involved with Rapunzel (the sun).

C.) Assuming the comet’s brightness can also symbolize Varian’s actions and influence, the more he interacted with Rapunzel, the more said actions and influence became more noticeable and felt in Corona. Just like how as a comet became brighter, the more noticeable it became to display both its beauty and its horrors upon mankind.

D.) As comets lose more of themselves with each return to the inner solar system, Varian appears to be losing more of himself (his sanity) with each progressing encounter with Rapunzel, notably in the second half of season 1.

5. Fragile Nucleus

A.) It’s no surprise that Varian is fragile, being presented to be very prone to accidents and injuries. He even suffered a mental breakdown by SOTSD.

B.) Comets release more gas and dust, and become brighter as it approaches the sun. But at what cost? Comets experience outbursts that may contribute to self-fragmentation; some end up evaporating completely if they get too close to the sun, and all sorts of other things happen to them that result in the comet losing its volatiles, weakening its structure, and even end up being destroyed completely. Similar to point D for Elliptical Orbit, Varian’s actions in Corona progressively became very noticeable and felt as he continued to react to Rapunzel’s light, but at the same time, the price of doing so results in his own self-destruction.

6. Natal Chart Superstition: I feel as if these words described Varian very well. Even though natal charts have no involvement in the series, it’s fun to think if his personality is playing along the lines or referencing this superstition.

7. What the hair?! *Literally*

A.) In the Moon Theory, Varian’s hair stripe can be seen as a crescent moon on one side. In terms of this theory, it could also be seen as a teal-coloured comet streaming across the night sky. The pointiest part of the stripe is the nucleus, then the rest left/upward from it curves and streams out like it’s tail!

B.) Comets appear to have their longest and curviest tails around perihelion, aka the point they’re most vulnerable to evaporate. This could be visual foreshadowing (get too close to the sun, and you’ll burn!).

Overall, I am excited to see how the series concludes regardless of whatever theory is confirmed; I’m sure whatever the crew has up their sleeves, it will be satisfying.

The Den Fantasy League Recap: Week 6

Gentlemen,

Yesterday was a swift kick to the nuts. I had my worst week of fantasy capped off by a MNF loss and then immediately followed by a Dodger loss in the NLCS. I’ll admit, I’m coming into this recap at my lowest point this season but I need to be strong for my league: onto the recap.

Wilmore Cinderella v. The Perfect Ten

In this matchup of our previous champs, we can only say one thing: Oh no, E. Starting off a season 0-6 isn’t what you want to see out of a defending champion. The question is: will this continue? He didn’t find a lot in his Texans with a combined 8.6 from Deshaun and Fuller. In fact, only two of his players amassed double digits: Zeke and Julio. The worst part? He was beaten by one of his own. JP and his newly acquired Melvin made E this week’s biggest loser. In fact, Melvin had almost half of E’s total on his own. Combine that with over twenty points from the fill-in Latavius Jarrod needed a few people to surpass E and send him to the BL interview.

Team Timshel v. Hank Mardukas

Don’t look now but Mike is on a roll. Mike had four guys hit 11.4 which would have some teams worried, however, he had plenty of firepower alongside them. With big games from Jameis, ARob, Jimmy, Raven’s D, and the newly acquired Conner, Mike almost made Scott the BL again. Scott’s interview was saved by Mike’s mercy and Butker’s big leg. Scott also can find a little bit of hope in repeat performances from Wentz, Sony, and Keenan. Scott’s flirted with victory and a spot at the BL table while Mike continues to surge. Will they continue at their respective trajectories?

Kalabar’s Revenge v. Fire Jarn

Kalabar’s Revenge almost ended up at the interview in October? Rob, who is now 5-1, almost sent him there? You can’t count anything out in Fantasy. In fact, if Rob plays Goodwin, it almost guarantees a spot at the table for G. G was lucky enough to have his Patriots (Brady, Gronk, and Stevie G) keep him around; add that with surprising games from Clement and Vikings D, hitting 109+ isn’t a bad feat. Unfortunately, G’s 109 couldn’t make Rob’s 127 worry. Rubbie is shocking the world right now and had one of his best weeks without Alvin in the lineup. How’d he do it? Huge games from Cam, Mixon, Tyreek, Boyd, White, and Hopkins. I think we’re at a point we can say it: Kalabar’s Revenge may not be the October powerhouse we thought he was. The other question: Is Rubbie legit? To be honest, I don’t know. I’m waiting for him to blow it but only time will tell.

2-2-1 (0.500) PVO v. Debbie Rowe

A team desperately needing a win v. a team who has sat down with yours truly multiple times for his interview. Dylan had two twenty-point outings from his kicker (Maher) and that triple-B Rodgers. The biggest surprise from Dyl’s team: Eric Freakin’ Ebron. Ebron has four TDs in his last three games, a surprise no one saw coming. Jake started out at 3-1 but now has seen himself fall back to .500. Honestly, I thought Jake sealed it with Creamy’s big Sunday night but boy was I wrong. I wouldn’t have been a fight without Creamy, Matty Ice, Funch, and Chargers D. These are two teams still trying to find their identity.

Virginia Reel Rockets v. Mr. Magorium

With our second biggest blowout of the week, Gabe was almost back on track of making his opponents the Biggest Loser. Al owes E a favor for taking the throne in his place. Interestingly enough, both of teams had a similar amount of players not hit double figures. However, Gabe’s team could’ve sacrificed his top scorer (Gurley, 34.5) and could’ve still won. Al had good games from Kirk, Collins, DeAndrea, Ertz, Texans D, and Bailey but there is cause for concern: is Cooper going to be out for a while? Gabe, with the aforementioned Gurley, had plenty of other high-point performers (Dalton, Saquon, Juju, Hooper, and Shady) to seal his league-high fifth win.

Inglorious Staffords v. VP

This week sucked. I’ll admit, I overlooked this game. It was: a trap game. My lead was slipping away all evening yesterday and my worry started to set in. I thought I was in a good position with the support of Russ, Thielen, and Bryant but Mahomes stole the life out of me Sunday night. I thought the points on my bench wouldn’t hurt me but boy was I wrong. Vinny’s primetime players did their job in primetime. Mahomes was Mahomes and that triple-B Rodgers ruined my week by feeding Vinny’s Davante. I want to go on the record and say: I’m not hitting the panic button. With that being said, everyone on my team is for sale (except Stafford, Thielen, and Kelce zone).

CHAPTER TWO: A PLAN IN THE WORKS

Ms. Harcourt managed to catch the swooning magician, more out of reflex and proximity than any conscious effort. There was sweat beading all over his forehand, and his whole frame shook like a leaf. His eyes were open but glazed and staring.

“Uh,” she said, looking frantically back and forth between him and the ward-lamps. All over campus, people were turning towards the library, pointing and calling out in surprise. Ms. Harcourt had never felt more conspicuous in her life, not even when she had been standing two feet away from the Lord Rector while supposedly being detained.

“Can...can you hear me? Um. Sir? Are you...” She waved a hand in front of Mr. Vervain's eyes, snapped her fingers a few times, even gingerly touched the side of his face, but though his eyes flicked back and forth slightly he did not respond.

The thought flashed through her mind that she could just leave him here, drop him alone in the courtyard with his satchel and both books and let him take the fall. Or perhaps even haul him back to the library and claim that he had forced her to help him, dragged her out of the workroom against her will. Magician or not, he seemed barely capable of standing on his own feet at the moment; she doubted he could do much to stop her just now.

Those were options that she had.

But, to her own surprise, she realized that she wasn't even really considering them at all, and not even out of concern for whether they would work. At some point, despite all her better instincts and common sense and lessons learned from stories about those who consorted with magic, the notion of betraying Mr. Vervain to the university had simply stopped being part of her equations. Why, she wasn't entirely sure; maybe because she still had too many questions she knew would never get answered otherwise, maybe because it was somehow hard to think of never seeing that red book again, or maybe just because she didn't want to give the university the satisfaction.

So she was not leaving Mr. Vervain behind, a thought that she hadn't even consciously registered until she was already pulling him upright and positioning him so he could lean on her shoulder. It was a familiar enough maneuver from having to deal with Feverfew. As an afterthought, she put his glasses back on him, in case that might help; at the very least she wouldn't have to look at those blankly staring eyes anymore.

“I'm still annoyed at you,” she muttered to him. He made a small noise which could have meant anything.

As quickly as possible--which was to say, very slowly--she set off across the courtyard. Much to her relief, Mr. Vervain was at least capable of shuffling his feet along with her, although from the way his weight lay across her shoulders she could tell he wasn't able to stand completely on his own.

She felt as if everyone in the university were staring at her, and she wanted to run, flee far away from the library and those accusing ward-lamps. But even if that had been possible under the circumstances she knew it would only guarantee that they would draw attention. Her only protection, at this point, was to keep walking as though everything were perfectly normal, as though she had nothing to hide at all, not a half-conscious magician leaning on her and certainly not the first two books to be removed from the inner library in centuries.

It worked surprisingly well, all things considered.

She kept away from the main courtyard as much as possible, staying off to the side on the smaller paths between the buildings; it made for a longer route, but a much less trafficked one. The interest of the entire campus was being drawn to the library like moths to flame, and the few people they passed had no attention to spare for the two fugitives.

They had very nearly made it all the way out of the courtyard proper and into the twisting maze of paths that would eventually lead out to one of the main city roads without being stopped. Very nearly.

“Hey there, Harcourt!”

Ms. Harcourt startled so hard she thought she could actually feel the thwack of her heart smacking against her ribs, and she almost dropped Mr. Vervain. She had to strangle the impulse to bolt there and then, and if not for the mostly-dead weight of the magician on her shoulder holding her back she might not have succeeded.

Only after the initial surge of panic had abated a little did she recognize the voice. She turned and saw the broad, brown, freckled face and the mess of bouncing black curls, and breathed a sigh of relief. It was only Berry.

Really, she should have expected this, she thought as she watched him come jogging toward them. If anyone was going to get right in the middle of her attempted escape, it would be Josiah Elderberry. He was something of an ubiquitous presence on the university campus. Still, things could have been a lot worse. Granted they could also have been better--Berry loved to chat, and was famously incapable of taking a hint, which could make it difficult to extricate yourself from his presence--but it could also have been a lot worse.

“What's going on here, then?” he said, puffing to a stop in front of them. “He looks out for the count. I have to say it's rather earlier in the day than I would start the drinking, although I don't wish to judge--”

“He's not drunk,” Ms. Harcourt said, then wondered why she had bothered to correct him when he had given her a perfectly reasonable out all on his own. She supposed correcting Berry was just force of habit at this point.

“No? Well, good for him I suppose, but then why the long face?” He patted Mr. Vervain awkwardly on the shoulder. “You look done in, poor fellow, if I may say.”

Ms. Harcourt grabbed at the most horrible thing that came to mind. “We...had an exam with Brambles.”

Brambles—more properly known as Professor Blackbriar—was infamous across campus for being harsh and unforgiving, and his exams were known to make the even most seasoned students quake in their boots. Compared to some of the horror stories Ms. Harcourt had heard about Blackbriar's exams, a student having to literally be carried out was comparatively mild.

“Oh. Ohhhhh.” Berry made a sympathetic grimace. Even his unquenchable good humor had to been known to be a bit quenched by Professor Blackbriar. “My condolences.”

“It was a bad one, even for Brambles. And he just, well...couldn't take it. Started breathing real fast and hit the desk. So I'm going to take him somewhere quiet, try to get a cup of tea in him or something.”

Right on cue Mr. Vervain moaned, rather pitifully.

Berry shook his head. “That's a rough break. Can I help at all?”

She wanted to tell him no, shake him off as quick as possible--but getting rid of Berry was unlikely to be that easy, and anyway she had to admit that actually she could use some help. Mr. Vervain was very light, but all the same carrying him was taking a toll on her.

“I could use a hand, actually,” she said. “If you could just get his other arm there-”

“Say no more!” Berry stepped in and lifted Mr. Vervain’s other shoulder onto his. “Not to worry, we'll get you...erm... wherever it is we're going.”

He glanced over at Ms. Harcourt.

“I was thinking Shadetree's,” she said. “So if you could just help me get him into a cab…”

“Ah, good idea! Dark, quiet, good strong tea. Shadetree's will fix you right up. That's where I always go when I need some lifting up.”

Ms. Harcourt blinked at him in bemusement. “When do you get stressed out, Berry?”

Berry grinned a bit sheepishly. “It happens. Surely even I'm allowed a bad day now and again?”

“I suppose so,” she had to admit, though personally she'd never seen it happen. Berry always seemed cheerful and carefree, sometimes irritatingly so. He came from old money and old power, the sort that was so well-established they didn't have to bother with hardly anything they didn't want to. The richer students, the ones with pedigree Names who were going to be accredited, tended to have cut-glass manners and beautiful tailored clothing; Berry, who was richer than all of them, showed up to classes in threadbare trousers and holey sweaters, happily went out drinking at cheap taverns late into the night, and seemed completely unaware of the fact that etiquette even existed.

Between the two of them they managed to haul Mr. Vervain toward Tinhouse Street, where the cab-horses made their rounds. Ms. Harcourt whistled for one. Llewellyn swore up and down that he had a whistle that would get the horses to come straight to you every time, but if this was true Ms. Harcourt had never quite managed to replicate it. Thankfully, the street had little traffic this time of day, so it wasn't hard to flag one of them down anyway.

The metal-and-ceramic horse clanked to a stop by the side of the street and waited patiently, little plumes of steam issuing from vents in its ears, while Berry and Ms. Harcourt maneuvered Mr. Vervain into the cab. It was a tricky business, but mercifully he did at least seem to be getting a little less boneless.

“Do you need fare?” Berry asked helpfully as they stood back with Mr. Vervain finally settled in the back of the cab.

“Oh, no.” Ms. Harcourt hastily fumbled in her satchel before Berry could insist—and he would, experience had taught her that. “I can get this. Shadetree Cafe, Dropman Lane,” she told the horse clearly, and dropped a few coins through the slot on its chest.

“Oh, well, alright,” Berry said, with the uncertain expression he always got when he wasn't allowed to use his money for something. “Good luck! I hope you feel better soon—what was his name?”

“Don't know,” Ms. Harcourt said desperately, climbing into the cab next to Mr. Vervain.

“Oh. Well, whoever you are, I hope you feel better soon!” Berry stood on the edge of the street and waved as if he were seeing them off on a long voyage, instead of a couple of streets over to a cafe. Ms. Harcourt, safe in the privacy of the cab, gave into the temptation to roll her eyes that she had been battling for the last ten minutes. Which was really quite ungracious, she supposed. It just seemed to naturally happen when she was around Berry.

They rode in silence for a few minutes, or relative silence; outside the little confines of the cab there was a wash of city noise, punctuated by the heavy clang clang clang of the horse's hooves.

“Magic,” Mr. Vervain mumbled.

Ms. Harcourt blinked. “What?”

“Magic.” Mr. Vervain sat up a little, with difficulty. “You say there's no magic but the city is full of it. What do you call that horse?”

“I never said there wasn't any magic,” Ms. Harcourt said, still a bit confused by this sudden line of conversation. “I said there weren't any magicians. Which, obviously, is an opinion I've since had to revise,” she added when Mr. Vervain gave her a look.

“Mm.” Mr. Vervain stared dully ahead. His face still looked rather sallow. “Magic but no magicians. How can that be?”

“Because there used to be magicians.” Ms. Harcourt was already get frustrated again. Mr. Vervain's constant questions about obvious things left her feeling unnerved. She half expected to have to start defending the sky being blue or something equally as ludicrous. “They left these things behind.”

“And now the magicians look after them.” Mr. Vervain shook his head, seemingly to himself. “But they don't do magic. Oh no. They just tend the machines...”

The cab shuddered to a halt in the middle of the street.

“Not very well, either, apparently,” Mr. Vervain muttered.

“No, it's alright.” Ms. Harcourt hopped out of the cab, hastily put a few more coins in the horse, and said, “Bronzewood Park.”

Mr. Vervain turned to look at her as she got back in the cab and the horse resumed its clanging walk. “Hang on a minute,” he said. “That's not where we were going before.”

“No.”

He considered this for a moment. “You didn't put enough money in the first time.”

“That's right. I didn't want Berry to know where we were really going.”

“Clever. If paranoid. You think he'll tell someone?”

Ms. Harcourt shrugged. “I think if someone asked him, he'd tell them. It wouldn't occur to him not to. Why should it, really?”

“Fair point.”

“Anyway, that cafe's a student haunt,” she went on. “It's far too well known. I wouldn't be surprised if they looked there.”

“So we're going to a park instead?”

She shrugged again. “Who would suspect a park? And somewhere open like that, we'll see anyone coming and we'll be able to get away. Can't do that in a cafe. Not so easily, anyway.”

“You've thought this through,” Mr. Vervain said. His voice was starting to sound a little clearer. “Though I have to say, even if you were lying to that young man, I really could greatly benefit from something to eat right now.”

“They have vendors in the park.” Ms. Harcourt glanced at him. “What happened to you, anyway?”

“I over-extended myself.” Mr. Vervain rubbed at his face. “Waking the library was...a considerably greater work than I realized initially, and certainly greater than anything I intended to do this afternoon.”

“You and me both,” Ms. Harcourt muttered. “Does working magic always have that effect on you?”

“Goodness, no.” Mr. Vervain glanced out the window as the cab turned a corner. “But to some degree...magic always takes something out of you. It's one of the basic rules. To receive, you must give...don't you know that one?”

“As a general principle, sure,” Ms. Harcourt said. “But we never discussed in detail what that would mean for a practicing magician. After all, what would have been the point?”

“Indeed.”

The cab stopped. The horse lifted its head and let out a clear chime, like a bell, to indicate that the ride was over.

Much to Ms. Harcourt's relief, Mr. Vervain proved capable of getting out of the cab by himself, though he stumbled a bit on the way down and had to be caught. The horse set off again on its rounds as they walked through the open gates to the park.
