The Hypocritical Nature of Fandom Shipping
Pairings we should be concerned with in Teen Wolf
Please read this as I feel I have made some relatively important points
Disclaimer:
This is about the concerning age gaps and what people focus on, this is mostly regarding people who are Anti-Sterek.
This is primarily on AO3 because I couldn't be bothered to go on any other website when it is the prominent one people use.
I have made a separate blog in order to keep those who may send me hateful DMs and I don’t exactly want what could be hate mail in my personal DMs because I am arguably a fragile person, and I will absorb the hate until I need to seek a therapist.
I also come from England, where the age of consent laws differs from the State of California, in which it is legal for 16-year-olds to date anyone over 18, so long as they are not in a position of responsibility/authority – like a teacher or an officer[1].
I would also like to point out that I am not against any ship except ones with particular elements I am completely against, such as people who ship blood-related family members (Wincest) or age gaps larger than ten years. However I won't go after people for shipping them, I would block that content so I don't come across it.

I realise I didn't talk about the predator and abuse of Isaac aspect, but that wasn't really the focus, I wrote this based on what I have seen on tumblr and twitter and even TikTok(?) and the only thing that really gets brought up is the age and how people who ship these fictional characters are "delusional", but thank you for adding to the discussion!!
Fanfiction is a transformative world. There are endless fandoms and pairings to write about such as those that focus on Formula 1[1] and Real Person Fics (RPFs)[2].
I hope to give a reasoned analysis on the pairings of Teen Wolf and the issues that I am aware of following the release of Teen Wolf: The Movie in January 2023.
This essay will focus on the hypocritical nature of shipping fictional characters with age gaps in Teen Wolf but will have a small comparison to other popular media. There will not be a heavy focus on age but rather than size of the gaps of these fictional characters.
TEEN WOLF'S ORIGINS AND AO3
Teen Wolf[1] originated in 1985s with Michael J. Fox starring as Scott Howard; the original production greenlit two sequels[2] leading MTV to adapt a modern version produced by Jeff Davis in 2011[3]. Teen Wolf has been met with a positive audience in the years of production with favourite seasons including season 3B and Season 5. The show continues to exhibit overwhelming popularity as the years go by as people rewatch it for nostalgia or because they wish to return to comfort episodes.
As with anything that exists, there are people who wish for their favourite characters to have an extended story or they do not agree with what the writers have decided is their fate, such as character death (Derek Hale in Teen Wolf: The Movie). Due to the disagreement viewers have with how their favourites end up, they will turn to fanfiction websites, specifically, in this decade, Archive Of Our Own (AO3)[4].
The AO3 tagging system is a complex aspect of the website but can be understood when the time is taken for people to find suitable fics relatively easily (when the fanfics are tagged properly of course). Tags often include spoilers regarding what is contained in the fanfic, typically “watersports”[5], “dub-con”/”dubious consent”[6], and “misunderstandings”[7]; but the tags could also include the author ‘talking’ to the reader which could include “no beta we die like [character]”[8].
THE STEREK SHIP AND THE POTENTIAL ISSUES
The Teen Wolf fandom contains popular ships such as, Sterek[1], Stydia[2], Stalia[3], Scallision[4], Liam Dunbar/Theo Raeken[5], Berica[6], just to name a few. A lot of pairings include Stiles Stilinski, most likely because Dylan O’Brien’s performance allows Stiles to have a chemistry with anyone he comes into contact with.
The pairing that contains the most fanfics is of course, Sterek; at the time of writing, Sterek contains 70,770 works which according to the last page of the date posted sort by began 26 June 2011[7]. Due to the popularity of the pairing, there is of course an exceptional amount of hate that comes with it, a lot of this hate can simply be found on Tumblr, known as Anti-Sterek(s)[8].
The chief problem that people who consider themselves to be Anti-Sterek have with the pairing is the age gap, Derek Hale is meant to be older than the rest of the main characters, however, it is unknown exactly how old he is meant to be due to the constant changing of his age (shown in the pilot screening presentation script where he was written to be nineteen[9]), but based on the events of that took place before the pilot episode, and for the purposes of this essay, it can be assumed he is around twenty-one to twenty-two at the beginning of the show[10].
Stiles Stilinski has obviously been written to be over sixteen years old, as he holds a valid licence. However, again, it is almost unknown when he turns seventeen due to the discrepancy in the timeline of events and almost contradictory statements made by the Teen Wolf calendar and the Teen Wolf Facebook page[11]; but it can be assumed Stiles turns seventeen during the events of Season 3 (3A and 3B). For the purposes of the writing, it can be assumed Stiles is sixteen during the pilot episode.
I am aware that shipping a sixteen-year-old with someone who is supposed to be (at the maximum) twenty-two is a large problem, however, if you consider reality, there are a lot of people who actively seek out relationships with people who are significantly older than them. When you contemplate actuality there are celebrities who have yet to face repercussions for dating people who are remarkably younger than them; Leonardo DiCaprio, and Sam Taylor-Johnson.
A factor that could be the reason that Sterek is scrutinized is due to the relationship that Kate Argent pursued with Derek when he was fifteen to sixteen. There is a lot of discourse on Tumblr and Twitter and even TikTok comments where fans equate the Sterek ship with that of what Kate did to Derek.
It is reasonable for viewers to abhor the relationship when based on these facts but, it should be remembered that a lot of fanfics involve alternative universes such as those of High School, and College where a lot of characters are specifically written to be the same age. I am not removing the reasoning behind the dislike of Sterek, I just want those who will take the time to read this analysis to realise that there are hypocritical aspects of shipping.
THE OTHER POTENTIALLY PROBLEMATIC SHIPS OF TEEN WOLF
It cannot be ignored that Sterek is not the only ship that has an age gap, there are viewers of the show who enjoy reading fanfics involving Steter (Peter Hale x Stiles Stilinski)[1]; this ship is also a problematic pairing due to the even larger age gap than that of Sterek’s, and this pairing on AO3 is considered to be the second most popular Teen Wolf ship with (at the time of writing) 10,766 works[2].
If you were to venture onto Tumblr and searched for the Anti-Steter[3] tag you would find less posts than the Anti-Sterek tag, and less frequent postings in general. Based on this, it would appear that there is more hate for Derek than Peter.
Another ship pairing that is more concerning, if fans of the show dislike large age gaps exceeding ten years, would be (Chris Argent x Stiles Stilinski) of which 866 fics are found on AO3[4], this is less than other ships but of course, still an interesting number of fics that have spanned 2012-2023.
The more popular ship containing Stiles and Chris is Stetopher which is a polyamorous ship that also comprises Peter. The works on AO3 are few in number, with only 739 published at the time of writing, these fics began being uploaded in September 2012[5].
This ship should again be scrutinised far more than that of Sterek because of the even larger age gap that exists. As aforementioned, it appears that Derek is greatly disliked due to the awareness of the Sterek ship.
Another ship that fans should be aware of is the Melissa McCall x Stiles Stilinski ship, of which there are 45 works on AO3, starting from November 2012 to 2023[6].
This ship is feasibly far more concerning considering Melissa is Stiles’ best friends’ mother, and undoubtedly this is the most unsettling pairing of all as Melissa would have watched Stiles grow up, and this would therefore be considered grooming.
In sum, the ships involving, Peter Hale, Chris Argent, and Melissa McCall should give rise to far more concern than that of Sterek. Again, this could mean that Derek’s character is far more hated, either because of Derek himself being written as something of an enemy in the first few seasons of the show airing, or because it’s easier to target pairings that are more popular than the other.
OTHER PAIRINGS THAT HAVE LARGE AGE GAPS BUT RECEIVE ALMOST NO HATE
The Vampire Diaries is also a popular show that aired from 2009 until 2017. The premise of the show is a seventeen-year-old Elena Gilbert falls in love with a one-hundred-and sixty-three-year-old. It is common lore that a vampire stops aging once they are turned, however, if people are concerned with age gaps of characters then there should be far more concern over the beloved shows.
Let’s not forget that popular fantasy books, such as that of A Court of Thorns and Roses and the Throne of Glass book series, also contain exceedingly large age gaps, it should not matter how old the characters are when they first meet, it should instead be about how many years apart they actually are. Yet, there is almost no hate found online regarding this aspect. When you compare this notion with that of Teen Wolf’s, there is a hypothetical question that could be raised, is the reason that Sterek is so hated down to it being popular, or is it because it is M/M pairing?
If an age gap is larger than ten years, that is when you should be concerned. I am not really concerned with age gaps in fiction being less than ten years, because it is fictional and I like the dynamic the pairing has, it is very rare that I read fanfics for any media but when I do, it is because I want more from these characters. If people in reality (where it is openly illegal to do so) are in relationships with large age gaps with someone underage, that is when you should troubled.
CONCLUSION
Teen Wolf is a popular show that generates a lot of discourse in the online community, it is probable that there is a heavy hypocritical nature to the pairings that people find. If people were truly concerned with age gaps exceeding two years, they would have more hatred for other ships in the show such as Marrish (Lydia x Parrish); however, it appears that Sterek is hated more due to how popular it is and could also be because Derek was written as a villain, especially in Season 2.
FURTHER POINTS
As stated in the disclaimer, I come from England and I write this with a different attitude, I am aware that the age of consent is eighteen in California, and it is illegal for anyone to leave the state with someone with the intention of having sexual relations. However, Teen Wolf is not real, and if you are getting exceedingly defensive and antagonistic around characters that other people ship and proceed to write long hateful messages to people anonymously on Tumblr to Sterek blogs and those who tag Anti-Sterek with claims that shipping Derek with Stiles is "pedophilic" in fact shows up the Sterek tag.
I expect that I could get hate for this, but I am not defending Sterek, I just hope I pointed out a few problems that I have found, I attempted to do extensive research, but I admit I would get more annoyed about the hypocrisy that I would have found.
I am not against people shipping whatever they want (look at the House of Dragons show) but I personally will not seek out ships that I don’t like and I don’t write hate because what’s the point? It’s not like it’s going to change anything, people enjoy what they enjoy. If you personally attack someone for who they ship, you are a terrible person. If you don’t like something, just block it so you don’t ever see it!!! IT IS THAT SIMPLE!!!

ALRIGHT, masks off besties. Are they your OTP? Cause they’re my OTP too, and we should consider bursting into flames about it together (ɔ◔‿◔)ɔ ♥
I didn't think I’d participate with writing this year, until about a week before the event, when I was frying-panned with some notions. As a fellow bearer of the curse, it started with a seedling of Kagome looking out for Inuyasha in the modern era, whether she realised it or not and even if, logically, she knew better, and snowballed from there. So, I blasted through each prompt with the intention of keeping them short, and after a survey back, each chapter grew deceptively longer, and I thought: why not add a stair [100 words] to Kagome's case for each day?
This particular canon universe is approached thusly: the prompt is the starting point, and the characters do the rest. I don't control the narrative, the narrative controls me, type thing. Hence, chapters are plot-negative, and times skips are abundant. Anyway. Enough waxing!
Note: I am working with the Viz English translation of the Inuyasha manga with some anime filler for seasoning, and the timeframe for the 3-year separation falls loosely between 1998-2001.

Prompt Breakdown ☆
Day 1: Love Language(s)
Summary: Kagome's been distracted. Or, I hc that Kagome spent a good amount of time away with the fairies (and trying to catch up with school) when she first got back.
Thoughts and Feels:
Love Language(s) were coined in 1992; the likelihood of them being such a commonly adopted phrase/ideology was as slim as Kagome knowing what her friends were going on about. They're a relatively new conception of navigating romance, but that doesn't mean buzzwords didn't make it into those teen mags we remember so well, though! Point for fuck it we ball!
For better or worse, friends are gonna be a tad nosy, and Kagome’s definitely were. Consistently and without fail:

Fun Fact: There is a small high chance I spent the most time on this one overall because trying to spin a tale in 100 words is wild.
Day 2: Possession
Summary: Kagome acts on impulse. Or, I hc that uncanny resemblances might ruin a girl's day out.
Thoughts and Feels:
Okay, yeah, okay, technically the baseball cap didn't happen in the manga. But this is why filler episodes are good for the ecosystem, or something.
Shock can have a lot of side effects. Confusion, agitation, complete and utter lack of personal or road safety (to name a few), and in Kagome's case here, shoving Inuyasha-shaped familiarity under her nose when she least expected it had her acting up, because not only has the well been sealed off for X time, she was used to him acting up whenever he stepped foot in the modern era:

Her friends still care, though! Cause that's what friends are for! As wild of a creature as Kagome can be, they're aware of her “struggles” with her health, and are oddly used to her odd ways:

Day 3: Safe
Summary: Kagome's has a nightmare. Or, I hc that a brave face doesn't do much when she's at her most vulnerable.
Thoughts and Feels:
If you've ever had nightmares/night terrors/sleep paralysis, you'll know how, well, terrifying they can be. Lucid states between sleep and wakefulness has a nasty way of warping perceptions, and with everything Kagome witnessed, her dreamscapes had to be vivid, especially after her stint in the jewel, where reality and fantasy blurred real bad, and what's worse, it taunted her about it:

To further that point, Inuyasha gets brutal - beheadings, graphic slaughterings (sometimes at the hands of an MC eheh), you know, justgirlythings - and therefore toned down for television, as anime adaptations often are. Kagome was 15, and while she did that, it would leave a mark. Trauma, guys. We're talking about trauma now.
If the reference was caught during her tiny tale: the scene with Mama H being shook to fuck over her baby glowing is anime-only, but I really dig the idea that she knew something was up with Kagome from Day 0, really aided in reasoning why she was so okay with her daughter doing all that, thank you for understanding. Another point for filler!
Fun Fact: I…barely remember writing this one, actually, truly, read it back a week later like: don't know her. I love her like any proud mother, though!
Day 4: Modern
Summary: Kagome asks a question she doesn’t like the answer to. Or, I hc that curiosity killed the cat.
Thoughts and Feels:
The trickiest one, in terms of setting. I spent too much time looking into the availability and flavours of historical records in Tokyo (particularly 2000ish, bc digital archives weren't that hot then) and came to the conclusion that while yes, it was possible for her to gain access to [something], no, it wasn't very likely she'd come across any death records, (specifically Koseki) for her friends, with the added bonus that family names are notably lacking until 1868. But take Kagome's resourcefulness + Japan's love for paperwork, and it led me here – to some kinda fake archive with fake books and fake names that could potentially be somebody that she used to know. And while I try my best to be respectful of the people and the setting I'm writing within, I asked myself bluntly, if I really gave a fuck about being accurate in this regard/fictional setting, and the answer was also: no. There isn't a Sunset Shrine either, so a fictional National Archives with The Right Documents there shall be.
Of all the Fuedal-Inuyasha characters, I feel like Sango is the one that would have Done Something to leave a mark, somewhere written on paper. You know...Badass Women For Agriculture Union [codeword for demon slaying], something. Yeah, Miroku was a holy man, but we're not talking about history right now, we're talking about Herstory.
And finally, that moment. The one where Kagome almost cracked and unleashed self-inflicted rage on some guy, cause time didn't cease to exist for them. The thing about Kagome, apart from her being an all round great character, is that she isn't tame, nor timid, and certainly no shrinking violet. But where she's brash and loud and (sometimes) quick to anger, she's also kind. And reasonable, and at the core, a wonderful person, and that duality is what makes her so lovable, relatable, and fun to write. Lookit her:
Chapter 175, Volume 185, Where They First Met ☆
Fun Fact: I really wanted to point out that Kagome was supposed to be in her high school uniform, but writing restriction said naur. Irrelevant. Also, this is my favourite chapter. Weird, right? Haha?
Day 5: Heat
Summary: Kagome hears a bump in the night. Or, I hc that stranger things have occurred than a random bout of sleepwalking while living with PTID (Post Traumatic Isekai Disorder).
Thoughts and Feels:
There was a small blip in time where this chapter skewed Mature. Explicit, even. Something about imagining a certain someone in a compromising position, but then the wind changed direction, and I went for literal heat. Japanese summers are stifling, and heat...is hot. Ace card, go!
Lunar charts and such: they don't add up when you compare two points in time, 500 years apart. But there could still be some peculiar celestial moon stuff that led a sleep-deprived Kagome to have a gander at the moon, especially when it's new.
Chapter 140, Volume 15, The Other Side of the Well ☆
Inuyasha had a brilliant way of turning up when she least expected him, or staying away when she wanted to see him the most. There are little things that happen, like an open window or remnants of a dream that might stay with her upon waking, to lead her to think-maybe it was him?
Chapter 287, Volume 29, Mimisenri ☆
BEHIND THE SCENES REVEAL: Kagome was the one who opened her door and tried to feed the cat, but it didn't work, because sleepwalkers are silly. Easter Eggy Subtext: Buyo is the catalyst, but Kagome is the key. Think about it.
Chapter 494, Volume 50, Two Worlds ☆
Day 6: Courting
Summary: Kagome tries her best. Or, I hc that Kagome gives it the old college effort, a la jewel illusion.
Thoughts and Feels:
Kagome's family want the best for her. Kagome's friends are boy-crazy hen-peckers. Hojo is cute, and has always shown an interest in Kagome. Therefore: it would be wild to assume she didn't at least say yes, once, to going out with him, even if she knew it really wasn't going to go anywhere:
Chapter 140, Volume 15, The Other Side of the Well ☆
Sometimes you have to do things to understand how much you don't want to do that thing. At this point in time, Kagome's coming up for graduation, she's spent almost 3 years dealing with everything that happened to her, and she's not a complete tool. However, the mind wanders, especially when you'd rather someone else's company:

She's going to give the modern era one last shot – because while romance isn't everything, it can be part of something – before throwing in the towel and saying fuck it, I tried. And as Kagome's will Kagome, she'd want to make an effort for the sake of others:

Summary: Kagome comes home. Or, I hc that Kagome finally puts her wants, needs and feelings first, and those might suspiciously man-shaped.
Thoughts and Feels:
Yeahyeah, the “I never thought I'd write this”, we've all seen it. But it's true! Never thought I'd write a chapter retelling, and this one is that fact's poster child. They aren't my bag (to read or to write) but the ending was there all along, obviously:
Chapter 494, Volume 50, Two Worlds ☆
The right wish, the wrong wish, a selfish wish, a selfless wish – as many Isekai's go, wish fulfilment is a huge part of the narrative (not just for Kagome, but so many of the characters) but she, unlike others, had a huge weight on her shoulders about making the right one that I wanted to tease out that moment where she gets it:

Chapter 79, The Fruits of Evil ☆
She made her dreams – from acing school, to making her family proud, to seeing Inuyasha again – a reality. There's really nothing more I can say about that, it's all there. She chose herself! And that included him! Ain't that neat!
Fun Fact: In Japanese, Inuyasha calls her a baka. In the scanlation, he calls her an idiot. In the English sub/dub, he calls her an idiot. In the Viz translation (the one I refer to most) he calls her a fool. Imho, in English, he says idiot, cause Inuyasha has zero respect and carries that no-finesse kind of rizz. Bless him.
Bonus Fun Fact: Chapters like this are why I'm such a flaming monster about writing advice being a tool, not a rule. Those last two lines, without the use of But and And at the beginning, would not carry the same weight and timing I wanted to achieve, therefore, you can pry them as sentence starters out of my cold, dead hands.

JJK Season 2 Episode Predictions
Manga SPOILERS for season 2. Just having fun making predictions for what chapters the episodes will cover. It's been rumored that s2 will have 23 episodes on twitter. No official source yet but it's probably from the next issue of Jump.
Season 1 ended with chapter 63. So, starting off with chapter 64!
1. Ch 64 - A super cute episode covering Ozawa's crush on Yuji. It'll be a nice nostalgic episode establishing of a better time before all our hearts are ripped to shreds later.
Hidden Inventory/Gojo's Past arc
2. Ch 65-67 - Official start of Hidden Inventory/Gojo's Past arc. Ends with the revelation of Riko's bounty.
3. Ch 68-70 - Starts with Toji explaining his plans. Satoru and Suguru deal with the bounty hunters attacking Riko's school. Kuroi gets kidnapped... which was a non-issue, so... Okinawa! Ends with Satoru getting stabbed in the back after returning to the school. Man, I can't believe these animators would be so cruel to end the episode on such a cliffhanger, amirite?
4. Ch 71-73 - Starts with that great Toji flashback.
Just an overall high tension, tragic episode where Toji fucks up all the kids. Ends with him remembering who Megumi is. Lol.
5. 74-75 - I'd start with a scene where Toji is walking away from Suguru and cutting to Satoru's finger twitch that was shown at the end of ch 73 first. Then back to Toji, who drops off Riko's corpse. And we get the iconic battle, round II, Satoru v. Toji.
6. 76-77 - Suguru finds Satoru with Riko's body at the Time Vessal Association. The year of Suguru's downward spiral. Ends on the massacre report.
7. 78-79 - Satoru is shook. The big breakup. Satoru meeting Megumi. Satoru wakes up in the present to the first years.
Post-credits scene where the first years go find Mechamaru. Episode properly ends with Geto and Mahito approaching him.

Notes: I can't believe I thought Gojo's past arc would initially only take like 3-4 episodes. It's definitely closer to 5-6 now that I've typed this all up. lol. 16 episodes left now.
Shibuya Incident arc
8. Ch 79-82 - Picking up where we left off, with Mahito and Kenjaku discussing their deal with Kokichi/Mechamaru. Whole episode is just dedicated to the Mechamaru fight. Ends on this ominous scene:
9. Ch 83-85 - Welp, here's Shibuya Incident arc. Begins with incident report lessgoooo. I love this narrative framing device in JJK tbh.
Introducing our allies and antagonists. The absolute massacre that starts in Shibuya station once Satoru is confronted with the disaster curses. Ends partway through ch 85; with Satoru exorcising Hanami.
10. Ch 85-89 - An auxiliary manager explains how the curtain around Shibuya station works. Yuji v. Grasshopper Curse, I expect would be relatively short? Ends with the train packed with transfigured humans coming into the station and Satoru casting Domain. Satoru is exhausted, and then the episode ends with:
11. Ch 90-91 - Opens with the flashback of Kenjaku explaining his plan to the curses. Kenjaku reveals himself to Satoru. Portable Mechamaru appearing on Yuji's ear. Satoru... getting sealed in the Prison Realm. Omg, it's here. Ends with Satoru having "faith in everyone." 😭 Goodbye for at least another season, bby.
12. Ch 92-95 - 9:22PM Allies meeting, concerned that it's been a while since Satoru's gone in. Yuji tells all about the sealing. Ino, Megumi, and Yuji team up. Ep ends with the knowledge that Ogami, that weird grandma, is trying to resurrect Toji.
13. Ch 96-99 - Begins with the curse users' backstory; Satoru's birth. Yuji et al. fight against them. Toji resurrected. Begin Nobara v. Shigemo fight. Episode ends in affirmation of Nobara being a badass and telling Akari to hide; so it's only partway through ch 99.
14. Ch 99-102 - Continue Nobara v. Shigemo. Nanami joins in and wrecks Shigemo's shit. Mei Mei & Ui Ui v. Smallpox Curse. Choso v. Yuji begins ahhh. Ends when Mei Mei wins her fight and Kenjaku comes to compliments her.
15. Ch 103-106 Choso v. Yuji continues. Choso has the memory that never was. End with Mimiko and Nanako finding Yuji; partway through ch 106.
16. Ch 106-109 - Starting partway through ch 106; 10:20PM Naobita, Maki, and Nanami v. Dagon. Megumi to the rescue! Ends with the gang trying to escape Dagon's Domain, only for Toji to pop up like a daisy.
17. Ch 110-112 - Toji kicks Dagon's ass. Megumi separates from the others and the Naobita, Maki, and Nanami face Jogo. Mimiko, Nanako, and Jogo all feed Yuji fingers. Sukuna kills the twins. Ends with Jogo terrified; partway through ch 112.
18. Ch 112-116 - Continuing right where 112 left off; Sukuna asking what Jogo wants. Toji v. Megumi fight. Kusakabe and Panda face Suguru's curse users before they're rudely interrupted by Sukuna v. Jogo. Sukuna and Uraume reunite. Ends with Shigemo freaking out about something Megumi did.
19. Ch 117-121 - An absolutely somber as shit episode. Starts at 11:05PM Shigemo v. Megumi where Megumi initiates Mahoraga. Sukuna summons Domain and destroys Shibuya. Yuji finally regains consciousness and is devastated. Nanami is killed by Mahito, and the episode ends on Yuji's facial reaction.
20. Ch 121-124 - Start off right at that last page on ch 121; Yuji is furious. Mahito v. Yuji. Mahito v. Nobara. It's like "Accomplices" part 2. But then Mahito touches Nobara's face; partway through ch 124.
21. Ch 124-128 - Starts partway through ch 124; Nobara's childhood flashback, adult Saori, the first years hanging out, etc., etc. Mahito beats up a shocked Yuji. Todo and Aarata show up and Todo tells Yuji to get up, which where I imagine the first half of the ep to end.
The Kyoto school are on the train, where the last remnants of Mechamaru talks to Miwa. Yuji and Todo v. Mahito. Episode ends partway through ch 128 where they've "brought out 120% of their potential."
22. Ch 128-132 - Cont. right where we left off ch 128. My absolute favorite sequence where Yuji chases Mahito through the metaphorical snow drift. Can't wait to see this animated.
Episode ends on Kenjaku appearing and offering to save Mahito.
23. Ch 133-136 - Starts with catching up on what everyone was up to until this point. Kenjaku bloodies Yuji up a bit and consumes Mahito. Everyone shows up and teams up against Kenjaku. Including Choso! Then Yuki! Episode/season ends with Kenjaku bouncing with the Prison Realm.
Wow, what a foreboding and depressing end to the season. lmao.
It'll be fun to see how accurate or completely off base I was with how I divided the chapters. Just about 2 weeks left!

Chase Koeneke's Top 25 Game Boy & Game Boy Color Games
The final part in GOTG's GB & GBC Top 25 coverage, make sure you check out my good friend Giggy's list, as well as the shared list we made together on the most recent episode of the podcast.
While the NES was my very first brush with video games, it wasn’t until the Game Boy that I truly fell in love with gaming. For a kid who got taken on a lot of long car trips, it was a godsend (both to me, but probably even more so to my parents, who could drive in relative peace). I dumped hundreds of hours into many of these games, and some of them continue to rank within my all-time favorites.

I’m not usually a big sports game guy. I find the ways devs abstract a sport through mechanics interesting, but often, their efforts fall short. I’d prefer to just hitting the batting cages than play Game Boy Baseball, y’know? But that’s not the case with Mario Tennis. Camelot aced this one, with simple, responsive controls that offered hidden depth in its strategic play. And the light RPG elements let you shape your character to better fit your play style (then import that character into the N64 incarnation!)
9. Warlocked
I didn’t grow up with a PC, so the real-time strategy genre was always something of a mystery to me. Warlocked was the first RTS I ever got my hands on, and while I can’t say it’s a particularly glowing example of the genre, the fact it even works on a Game Boy Color is astonishing to me. I ran the wheels off this game, playing through both its campaigns and collecting all the colorful wizard characters (Sweatwiz for life!)
8. The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
Zelda continues to not be my thing, but the Oracle games are generally my favorites of the entire franchise (which feels wrong since they’re made by Capcom). Of the pair, I prefer Seasons’ mechanics. Plus, I really love exploring Subrosia — a volcanic land sitting right below the overworld — and interacting with its Jawa-looking residents. Most people are going to prefer Link’s Awakening, and that’s fine, but for my money, Oracle of Season is the way to go.
7. Donkey Kong ’94
It’s unfair how good this game is. The movement tech Mario can achieve is unreal, and it forever changed the way we think about Mario’s moveset. If you’ve ever enjoyed the triple jumps of Super Mario 64 or the cap throwing and diving of Mario Odyssey, you have DK ’94 to thank for inspiring it all. This game takes the original arcade game, and expands it into one of the greatest puzzle-platformers of all time.
6. Tetris
It’s Tetris. I mean, what else needs to be said? Later versions have added slight tweaks to the formula in the form of T-spins or holding pieces that make them arguably better, but whenever I want to play some Tetris, this is always the one I reach for.
5. Kirby’s Dream Land 2
Creator Masahiro Sakurai has said the original Kirby’s Dream Land is all about introducing people to what a platform game is. Dream Land 2, in my opinion, is about introducing you to what they can be. The copy abilities brought in from Kirby’s Adventure are expanded threefold with the addition of Kirby’s animal companions, and the music from the battle with King Dedede still bangs. This will forever be my favorite Kirby game.
4. Mario Golf
I gushed about Mario Tennis above, but it can feel repetitive at times as you play set after set on nearly-identical courts. Mario Golf brings in everything good about Tennis (the RPG elements, character importing, great controls) and applies it to a sport that naturally has a little more variety through its courses, challenging you to approach them in different ways. Pick up both if you can, but if you only have room for one, Golf is the way to go.
3. Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal
The second generation of Pokemon games add so much to the series, both from a mechanical perspective with new types, held items, additional HM moves, breeding and more. But maybe more importantly, Gold, Silver and Crystal surprise and delight in a way that make you feel like you’re in a living and breathing world. It can be annoying for those going back to the games now, but having a real-time day and night cycle affecting the Pokemon you could catch felt revolutionary. And weekly events like the bug-catching contest or a Lapras that only appeared on certain days made you want to explore (and re-explore) every area in the game. Last, but certainly not least, going back to Kanto in the postgame continues to be one of the coolest surprises a game can throw at you.
2. Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow
…But even if all of the above is true, it’s not the original. Red, Blue and Yellow, while often a broken, buggy mess, got so much right on their first try. I think a lot of it is the sense of ownership I got through playing. When you pick up a Mario or a Zelda game, you’re playing as those characters, escaping into their shoes. With Pokemon, those were my shoes, and the creatures beside me were ones I raised and trained. It was all my adventure. And that made it all the more special.
1. Pokemon Trading Card Game
There’s something about card games though. All my Pokemon card friends just wanted to collect them, to keep them in binders and show them off. I always wanted to play the actual game, but would never have anyone to play against. That is, until this came out. Now I had a bevy of computer opponents to face off with, and every win would grant me the dopamine rush of ripping open virtual card packs to further enhance my decks. Even if the card game its based on is a little unbalanced, it’s still one of my favorite games ever, and my favorite Game Boy title of all-time.

My thoughts on the ninjago ages and time in between seasons. If you figure out how much time passes in between seasons, you can work out their age. First of all, I think pilot to s2 takes place in the same year, so = Kai = 17 Jay = 17 Cole = 18 Lloyd = 10/14 Nya = 15. My reasons for Lloyds age after the tea is that some people think Harumi was 12/13 around s1 so this would put them in the same bracket. Nya is canonically two years younger than Kai (its said in s7 that Nya was three and Kai was five when their parents got kidnapped) Kai seems to be near adulthood in the pilot. In during child’s play in s2, Cole says that being a kid is annoying because you can’t drive. Ninjago seems to have a lot of laws based on Japan and (correct me if I’m wrong) you can drive at 18.

Lydia was born brilliant and beautiful, and learned early that she could leverage one to get by; everyone seemed too confused by the prospect of a prom queen with a genius-level IQ. So she hid behind her looks and designer shoes and expensive floral dresses and a thick layer of snark; she dated the high school quarterback and never let on that she was on track to be valedictorian.
Her parents’ marriage was... rocky at best, and Lydia learned to put her walls up young. Real relationships only hurt. Emotional intimacy ended in tears. When they finally split, years too late, the damage was done, but her father landed one final blow by asking Lydia to choose a parent to live with. She picked her mother.
Born and raised in Beacon Hills, she always planned to leave. The town was too small, the world was too big, she was too trapped, too desperate for something more. She was going to win the Fields Medal, goddammit. She was going to graduate summa cum laude from MIT. She was going to change the world, and she would do it somewhere they didn’t know her as the high school mean girl.
And then, of course, there were the monsters. The visions, the nightmares, the time spent in a fugue state wandering the woods naked (high school was fun!), eventually learning that she was a banshee--a wailing woman, a harbinger of death. Great and good for her emotional well-being!
tl;dr Lydia is not nearly as stable as she tries to let on--she’s been doing much better after putting some mileage between herself and Beacon Hills, but she’s never too far from a collapse

The Rookie' Fans, Eric Winter Just Addressed If He's Coming Back After That Emotional Scene
The Rookie is more than halfway through season 5, and fans are wondering if Eric Winter's character Tim Bradford is OK. Meanwhile, others are asking if the hit ABC series will be renewed for more episodes. While there has been no word about these concerns, Eric seemed to have dropped a major hint about what's to come.
In late January, the actor submitted a Cameo discussing the likelihood of The Rookie scoring a season 6. At the time, he assured fans that they should expect to hear good news relatively soon. What's more, he appeared hopeful that his character Tim Bradford would be written out of the show down the road.
"Right now, our ratings are better than ever," he said in the clip posted to Instagram on January 23. "I feel really confident about a season 6. Nothing's official yet, but I do feel confident given the way things are going. So, get ready for more Rookie."
Due to the fact the ABC show (and subsequently, Eric) brings in a consistent viewership every Tuesday night, the actor's thoughts about a new season drew many excited comments from The Rookie fandom.
"Yay season 6 keep this show going I love this show," one person wrote on Instagram. "Season six is happening. We all know we’re just waiting for confirmation," another added. "If Officer Bradford goes we will stop watching!!! Tim and Lucy finally found love!!!" a different user replied, referencing his character's relationship with former rookie Lucy Chen (Melissa O'Neil).
As for whether The Rookie will actually be back for a new installment, Eric hasn't explicitly said anything other than he wrapped filming the season 5 finale. But some eagle-eyed fans did some research and found that an acting studio may have accidentally revealed the show's plans for a renewal ahead of time.

Well, we'll keep our fingers crossed and radio the fans when an official statement drops. Until then, we'll just be watching to see more Chenford ...

My Tma favorites (per entity per season)
In honor of the finale of Tma, I'm looking back and going through the seasons and picking out my favorite episodes. I'm sorting them by entity and Im gonna write a little piece at the end of each fear as to why I picked that episode. It is relatively spoiler free but still keep your wits about you.
Also this is only up to Mag 197
The Stranger
Season 1: 1 Anglerfish tied with 34 Anatomy Class
Season 2: 77 The Kind Mother
Season 3: 83 Drawing a Blank, with 96 Return to Sender as a close second
Season 4: 128 heavy Goods
Season 5: 182 Well being, but 165 Revolutions is very very good
Overall: 1 Anglerfish
So all the of The Strangers’ episodes are really evocative and well written and I have to say that it was a very, very close call for almost every single season and I still cannot really decide if I truly like Mag 1 more than Mag 34 but I have to say that Mag 1 is so very good at drawing you into the world and works as a stand alone piece.
The Buried

That plus the delivery and excellent premise gives it a slight edge over Mag 172 that is a pure exploration of the controlling and manipulative nature of addiction
The Vast

So the first half of season 5 does an amazing job of truely fleshing out each fear and the Vast is no exception. The split between the two protagonists makes it clear that The Vast is not just about big things or empty space but deep existentialism and the fear of the inevitability of life.

Everything about Mag 171 just speaks to me. From the visual it conjures, to the brilliant use of botany metaphor to describe various body image issues, to Jared’s simple but weighty request. This episode lives rent free in my brain at all times. This is the first time that I have zero contenders for my favorite of an entity.
The Corruption

Although Mag 164 does have a very particular place in my heart and in the history of literature due to its topic and the precise time it came out, but it does pale compared to just how brilliant Mag 32 is. As the first real mention of the entities it reveals just little enough to keep the suspense whilst providing just enough answers that it's obvious in hindsight. But once more none of that matters in the face of “There is a wasps nest in my attic” the shere delivery of this episode has placed it in many people's favourite lists.

Mag 42 is very interesting. I’ve mentioned in some of my other posts that Im pretty sure that Jonny Sims finds some fears harder to write and the Slaughter is definitely one of them but I’ve only come to this conclusion by looking at how frequently they show up but listening to the show you would never be able to tell and Mag 42 is one brilliant example of this it is a brilliant way to expand on how the Slaughter manifests.
The Desolation

I find Mag 67 so intensely interesting as it leads into one of the major themes of Tma, that love can and will defeat and overpower even the most gripping fear. The simple love of a simple man sowed just enough doubt to destroy an avatar of destruction. Tma is filled with similar moments but personally this one is my favourite.
The Dark

I remember the reaction to Mag 173. It was so incredibly powerful to watch most of the fanbase (myself included) react in exactly the same way the characters did to the reality of this domain. First with dawning realisation, then anger followed sudden confusion at where to direct that anger. It was quite eye opening to say the least.
The Hunt

I absolutely love Mag 112. It is such a brilliant idea, and as a result I end up valuing it a bit more than Mag 133 or 10 which are particularly telling for me as it proves that the Hunt is weirdly the fairest of the entities and absolutely condones fighting back and even killing its avatars or that it just cares about the circular nature of the hunt.
The Eye

How Old are the Characters on 9-1-1?
I am the person that tries to fit everything into a logical timeline (even when the timelines don’t necessarily exist to be logiced). So today, we’re going to try and figure out how old the main characters on 9-1-1 are - to the best of my ability given the information we have from the first three seasons of the show.
For this, we’re going to be looking at seven of the characters (I am disregarding Michael, and the kids. Albert isn’t a main character until S4 and we know that he’s 20 years old because in Season 3, Episode 11 “Seize the Day” he says “20 years old I’ve never met my brother”, so there isn’t much to talk about beyond that). There simply isn’t enough information for Michael - I’m hoping the writers fix that in the upcoming season. The kids are relatively straightforward and will be used to help when determining the ages of their parents so you’ll hopefully get the information you’re looking for there.
I’ll be using a combination of canon information and actor’s real ages and a bit of real-world-equivalent research. I may get it wrong but I’m gonna do my best.
Here we go:
Evan “Buck” Buckley
I’m starting with Buck because he will be the baseline for a few of our characters and he’s the one we know the most about in terms of age. In Season 1, Episode 9 “Trapped”, Buck tells Bobby “I’m 26″ (which is helpful information in determining his age). That episode aired March of 2018 and given then we know Chimney posed for the 2019 LAFD calendar at the beginning of S2, we know that it’s at least somewhat in line with the real world time. We don’t know his actual birth date but because he’s 26 in early 2018, I’m going to MAKE AN ESTIMATE that Buck was born in 1991. It could be ‘92 but the odds say it’s ‘91.
By the end of 2020, it is fair to say that Evan Buckley is 29 years old.
Athena Grant
We’re gonna make a few estimates with Athena but again, we know a fair bit about her history thanks to Season 3, Episode 7 “Athena Begins”. Athena met her fiance Emmett Washington while attending law school in 1989. We don’t know how long she was at law school before switching careers, but given the optimism of her friends (and their conversation about the possibility of changing careers), I am going to make the assumption that she was in her first year. Knowing what we know about Athena’s work ethic and her mother’s push for her to be successful, it’s safe to assume that Athena was 18 when she started college. 5 years later in the fall of 1989, she would be 23. There’s a difference of a few years because, again, we don’t know 100% when she switched careers and when she started college but this is a fairly safe estimate of her age.
By the end of 2020, Athena Grant would be 54 years old.
Bonus because I didn’t actually talk about the kids like I thought I would
In Season 3, Episode 5 “Rage”, Michael talks to Bobby about getting stopped by the police and tells him that Harry is 10. That episode aired at the end of October 2019 and the halloween episode comes right after so, again, we’re somewhat in line with reality. It’s safe to assume that Harry was born in 2009 and is 11 years old at the end of 2020. In Season 3, Episode 2 “Sink or Swim”, May begs with her victim Vicki not to traumatize her because she’s 17 years old.
The tsunami episodes are a little tougher to find on the timeline. We know that the tsunami happened about six months after the truck bombing because Buck had five months of rehabilitation and a week or so of moping around before he took Christopher to the pier. Season 2, Episode 13 “Fight or Flight” takes place conservatively at the end of January (Chimney meets Doug at the end of December and they’re friends for a short while before his stabbing). After that, he’s on leave for six weeks and is fully recovered by Season 2, Episode 15 “Oceans 9-1-1″. So let’s put the events of that around the beginning of April. Bobby is promptly put under investigation and though we don’t know how long he’s on administrative leave, it’s anywhere from a few weeks to a month (given that Captain Han is only on the job for a short period of time). We know that Shannon’s death is about a week before the bombing since his family are in town for the funeral at the beginning of Season 2, Episode 18 “The Life We Chose”, putting the bombing around the beginning of May. Five months later puts the tsunami at the beginning of September. Again, we’re using the law of averages to assume that May is 18 at the end of 2020.
Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz
You’d think our buddy Eddie would be fairly easy given all we know about his life in El Paso, Texas and his son (who we know was born in 2011 and is therefore 9 years old at the end of 2020 - ala Season 3, Episode 15 “Eddie Begins”). However, that is just one part of the enigma that is Eddie’s birthday. We don’t know how old Eddie was when he first enlisted which would so desperately help my brain. We do know that Eddie moved to LA in 2017 and in Season 2, Episode 7 “Haunted”, Eddie tells Shannon that Christopher hasn’t seen her in almost two years.
Fancy math time. Kind of.
Eddie moves to LA in 2017 and goes through the LAFD academy which takes about 4 months. He was recruited by Bobby right out of the academy and that same week, Chimney wins the slot on the 2019 calendar. In Season 2, Episode 4 “Stuck”, Chimney has a completed copy of the calendar to hand out to Tatiana so it’s been a few months, and “Haunted” takes place over Halloween, so we’re looking at May 2018 at the latest for Eddie joining the LAFD. This lines up with Eddie joining the academy in late 2017, meaning Shannon left in mid 2016. That was over three months after his return from Afghanistan (based on the fact that the note she left was directly related to their argument which DID take place three months after his return). Based on the time card in the flashback, we know that Eddie left on his second tour in 2015, making Christopher, likely, 3 years old (maybe 4) which is a little late for a diagnosis but not out of the realm of possibility - and the baby that Eddie holds doesn’t look like a four-year-old but what do I know about babies? Nothing. We also know that he signed up for his first tour when he found out that Shannon was pregnant and he was in Afghanistan when they found out that Christopher has cerebral palsy - again, this comes from their argument in flashbacks during "Eddie Begins". Clearly, he was on a four-year tour the first time, returning and leaving again in 2015 (and returning at the end of 2015 after his injury). Presumably, he registered near the end of 2010 (maybe early 2011 - what I wouldn’t give for a birthdate for anyone).
We also know that he worked for his father before joining the army (ala Season 3, Episode 11 “Seize the Day”). It could be that he worked for his father as a teenager but it’s more likely that Eddie went to work for his father straight out of high school (no plans for college), so he worked for him for a few years before Shannon got pregnant. Again, we’re going to guess Eddie is 21 when Shannon is pregnant, 22 when Christopher is born making him a 1989 baby (it could be ‘90 or later but we know that Eddie is older than Buck because Chimney teases him about Buck respecting his elders in Season 2, Episode 1 “Under Pressure” which, admittedly is part of their sibling rivalry but does seem to have a ring of truth to it). We don't know how long he worked for his father before joining the army, but using the fact that he and Shannon didn't plan to marry or have Christopher, and Eddie didn't feel he had any financial recourse but to join the army, it couldn't have been a very long time.
This would make Eddie Diaz (approximately) 31 at the end of 2020.
Henrietta “Hen” Wilson
My dear Hen, I’m gonna do my best with her but we’re running out of casually thrown out information. Hen was working as a pharmaceutical representative in 2009 (based on her partner talking about the ‘08 meltdown in Season 2, Episode 9 “Hen Begins”). Becoming a paramedic firefighter takes about a little over a year to complete and unlike Chimney, she went straight into it so we’re looking at the end of 2010 maybe 2011 when she joins the LAFD.
Hoping in our time machine: becoming a pharmaceutical rep requires a bachelor’s degree and completion of training and certification (the testing of which takes a few hours but there’s wait times and study times so we’ll say a few months). We’re doing a ton of guess work here as to how long Hen was a rep before she quit but given her state of weariness, I’m guessing it was a few years. We also know that she didn’t go into pharmaceuticals straight out of high school because she claims that she jumped around between jobs for a little while in her youth.
SO. If, in 2009, Hen had been a rep for 5 years, let’s say (I’m making a huge guess because she’s good at her job but still a junior partner - which could be related to the fact that she is a WOC working in a man’s world but she also is determined and smart enough that she wouldn’t have put up with their sh*t for too long). That puts her starting college around 2000/1999. I AM 1000% guessing at this point but we’re gonna keep going.
Aisha Hinds was born in 1975 (she will be 45 on November 13th 2020) so let’s use her as a template. In the year 1999, she would be 24 which would line up with someone who was a little nomadic before starting her career. Given Hollywood’s love of aging women down, I might even say she was 22 or 23 when she started college making her anywhere from 42-45.
Given our lack of knowledge, I’m estimating that Hen Wilson is 45 at the end of 2020.
EDIT: IN Season 5 Episode 9, Hen and Toni confirm that Toni found out she was pregnant in 1978. Unless this was between January and Early March, this means Hen was born in 1979.
This makes Hen 41 at the end of 2020.
Howard “Chimney” Han
Okay, we’re gonna talk about this honky tonk dork as best we can because, as I said, the well is running dry here. Admittedly, this is my shakiest theory so bear with me.
The earliest we see our boy is 2005 (Season 2, Episode 12 “Chimney Begins”) where he is working with Kevin at the bar. Shortly after the fire at the establishment, he and Kevin join the LAFD (which makes sense because a few months into his time at the 118, baby Albert interrupts the phone call and he’s maybe 5 or 6). Other things we learn about Chimney Stack is that he’s been “hustling” since he was 16 and his first job was babysitting Kevin after the Lees took him in.
In Season 3, Episode 11 “Seize the Day”, Chimney tells Albert that he moved to the States when he was 5 and stayed for 6 years and when his father returned to South Korea, he stayed with his mother. His mother sadly died a few weeks before his 15th birthday, at which time, he was taken in by the Lees permanently. The time between hustling at 16 (after which he’s had “a hundred jobs”) and joining the LAFD in 2006 is unknown but I'm assuming it was a while, given his restless nature and the numerous jobs he claimed to hold.
Again, we’re going to the source material that is Kenneth Choi, who was born in 1971 (he turned 49 on October 20th 2020). If he was our template, Chimney would be 35 when he joined the LAFD.
Do you know what time it is?
It’s time for CJ’s Opinion.
Purely my opinion, no real evidence involved, but I think Chimney is a few years younger then Kenneth. He appears to be older than Hen, though (plus him getting promoted to Captain when Bobby is gone makes sense when he has seniority and is the oldest of the professional crew), and since we decided Hen was 45, I’m gonna place him at 47.
But again, given the lack of available information, I will say that Chimney Han is 49 at the end of 2020.
Madeline “Maddie” Buckley
A fair bit of this information is coming from Season 2, Episode 13 “Fight or Flight” and tidbits I’ll source as I can. We don’t officially know what the age gap between Buck and Maddie is, but the age gap between Oliver Stark and Jennifer Love Hewitt is 12-13 years. In Season 2, Episode 1 “Under Pressure”, she jokingly says that used to give him baths when he was 2. It’s not a lot, but we know that she wasn’t 10 so it’s safe to assume that the gap between Buck and Maddie is similar to the one between the actors. In Season 2, Episode 2 “7.1″, Maddie tells Josh that she was an ER nurse for 8 years. It takes about 6 years to qualify as an ER nurse (4 for school, 2 for residency). That’s 14 years of adulthood which WOULD make her 32 if she went straight out of high school, but we’re going to assume that she did something before going into nursing.
We’re heading into speculation territory here but hopefully you can follow my logic on this. Maddie and Doug were in similar fields (using the past tense because we’re glad that b*stard is dead) so it’s okay to assume that they met because of work. Maddie and Doug appeared to be around the same age (and the difference between JLH and her husband is only a few months). The youngest chief cardiac surgeon in my area is 38 years old so we could use that as a base for Doug, who claimed to be the second youngest in the State of Pennsylvania. The timeline to become a cardiac surgeon is a long one. 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 5 years of residency and 2-3 years of fellowship (16 years to become a cardiac surgeon, plus the years it takes to get in good standing to become chief cardiologist which - at the very least - is five years). Doug is, at minimum, 39 when he gets his promotion and they use their wedding glasses to toast which they haven’t used in years - Maddie says they haven’t used them since the wedding, and she admits that the abuse didn’t get bad until the last few years, indicating that the flashback is in the second half of their marriage.
We know that once things got rough with Doug, Maddie cut off ties with Buck for 3 years before resurfacing in 2018 and she tells Buck that there were signs of Doug’s abuse that he picked up on “when he was a kid”. The oldest she’s going to call Buck a “kid” is when he’s 18 in 2009 and if she was seeing Doug then, we know that she was already in nursing at the time because it takes 14 years. In fact, for her to leave her job as an ER nurse after 8 years in mid-2018, she would have gone to nursing school around 2004 when Buck was 14 (which backs up my theory about her and Doug meeting at work/school).
When it comes to parents letting their children babysit each other, it’s typically about comfort level and given that we know next to nothing about the Buckley parents, it’s hard to make an estimate as to what age they would allow Maddie to look after 2-year old Buck. Most parents would say 15-18 (given that she wouldn’t likely still be in the house after that according to western culture in the 90s). That makes Maddie 40-43 when she leaves Doug. Factoring in the age gap between the actors, I’m going to make an educated guess and say she was 41.
If all of that makes sense to you, that makes Maddie Buckley 43 at the end of 2020.
Robert “Bobby” Nash
Of course, I saved the best for last because our boy Bobby did your girl a solid (and thank god, because if you’re tired of reading this, I’m ready for a 100-year curse just so I can take a nap).
In Season 1, Episode 10 “A Whole New You” Bobby sets up a dating profile, determined to get back out there. And what is on his profile under his username “FRCAPTAIN118″? The number 52. Now, that could be the number of his favourite cricket player, but I’m willing to bet that’s his age. Peter Krause is 55 (as of August 12th 2020), making it perfectly reasonable for Bobby to be a year or so behind him.
As we discussed earlier, Season 2 starts around May 2018 and we know that Bobby sets up the profile and goes on his date with Athena a few months earlier (Bobby says they’ve been together for 4 months in “Under Pressure”). That would put the events of “A Whole New You” around February (which is a bit of a stretch but so is this entire essay so we’re going to go with it).
Either way, that makes Bobby Nash 54 at the end of 2020.

Miraculous Sweet-ember (Sept. 30th)
September 30th: Chat Blanc, Félix, & Ladybug
Chat Blanc emotionally scarred all of us I think we can all agree to that. Everything we could’ve hoped and feared for was wrapped in this heart-aching episode. We’ve seen a possible outcome for a premature one-sided reveal which leads to the end of the world. After Adrien saw Ladybug place a gift for him in his room with an attached note from Marinette he instantly put two and two together. We all joke that Adrien is oblivious but in reality, once he gets the puzzle pieces he puts everything together rather quickly. Not only did he put together that Ladybug was Marinette he also knew that meant he was the boy she loved. Discovering that Ladybug was Marinette and in love with him brought him an immense amount of joy. He was basically on cloud 9. He ran off to confess to Marinette his love for her but made sure not to disclose to her he found out her secret identity. And then they finally dated yay!...until his father ruined it. Gabriel being his usual unpleasant self made Marinette break up with Adrien so he can manipulate her into being akumatized.
Adrien wasn’t going to just let Marinette go so easily so as he went after her he saw an akuma making its way over to her. He knows she is Ladybug so the threat of her getting akumatized was even greater so he transformed of Marinette revealing himself to her...and Nathalie. The two heroes without seeing how discovered Hawkmoth’s identity...which lead to Chat finding his unconscious mother...and...eventually him being akumatized bring the end of the world. Chat Blanc is a cautionary tale of revealing information too suddenly. It’s neither of their faults for the destruction of the world but because the timing was off. Information was being withheld it caused the communication between the two to be incomplete. Their relationship was a good and happy one but because their added responsibilities of being a hero and having a supervillain trying to defeat them it adds complications normal relationships don’t have. So they have to be cautious not to let things slip up too suddenly. Chat Blanc was a great example of why we should take their secret identities more seriously and not get frustrated as to why they cannot share them yet. At least with Chat Blanc we had confirmed information that Adrien does suppress feelings for Marinette deep down, that Gabriel will do whatever it takes to get the miraculous even harming his son and that Marinette and Adrien would be happy together.
Félix was about Adrien’s trouble-making cousin who happens to look a lot like him. It’s also the first time we’ve seen relatives of Adrien on the show with Félix being from his Mom’s side of the family with his mother Amelie Graham de Vanily who is Emilie’s twin sister. Both Adrien and his cousin can relate to losing parents but how they were shaped by their loss is a lot different than one another. Adrien sees the best in people and wants to make friends. Unlike Adrien, Félix is mischievous and has malintent with his interactions with others. As soon as he got to the Agreste mansion he was already trying to ruin Adrien’s reputation and steal Gabriel’s ring. Through Félix and Adrien we saw how grief can impact people in different ways.
When Félix pretended to be Adrien his goal was to make all Adrien’s friends hate him after making mean comments to them. This made Alya, Juleka, and Rose become reakumatized and go after Adrien (who was Félix) as revenge for what he has said to everyone. Ladybug who already thought something was off with ‘Adrien’s’ (aka Félix’s) video message went to save him from the akumas. When the rescue was completed she was ready to go back intake them on that's when Félix tried to pressure her into a kiss. Even though she was uncomfortable he still cornered her in and tried to land a smooch. But then the greatest thing happened...Ladybug told him all about consent and punched him right in the face. A great thing to see. Seriously consent is extremely important and Félix was crossing major boundaries. Adrien never would behave in such a way so it was also very telling her that this isn’t Adrien. Ladybug punching a man who was not taking no as an answer was very empowering and I’m glad a younger audience will see this and understand that if someone is making you uncomfortable then you don’t need to put up with it.
Ladybug was another intense, jam-packed episode. It focuses on Lila’s lies, Marinette’s near akumatization, and exploring the depths of sentimonsters. We saw the alliance between Gabriel and Lila in action and the extremes Lila would go to get Marinette's reputation ruined. We finally started to understand why Hawkmoth was so hellbent on akumatizing Marinette. People view her as a good and trustworthy person that it would cause a lot of emotional response if she ever did a bad deed. Alya stuck by her friend and tried to investigate who would’ve framed Marinette. Adrien with such intensity threatened Lila to leave Marinette alone and forced her to clear Marinette’s name. It was also confirmed that Marinette’s akumatization would be a justice theme and seeing her be almost successfully akumatize was a big moment.
With Mayura we saw that it was possible to recreate human life with the Peacock miraculous which was showing this miraculous in its most powerful form. She created another Ladybug to trick Chat Noir so she can take the miraculous from him. This took such a huge physical toll on Natalie and just added more curiosity about what could’ve Emilie used the peacock miraculous for. We discovered that even though sentimonsters are real human beings they act and experience feelings just like humans. The deep insight on how sentimonsters operate was very intriguing and it was cool to see that through a Ladybug version. Hawkmoth also made another appearance after discovering Mayura was off on her own giving us another in-person battle with our heroes. This confrontation ended up being a showdown between Hawkmoth who was holding on to Chat Noir and Ladybug who was holding onto Mayura. We saw that Ladybug valued Chat’s safety over the peacock miraculous and Hawkmoth valued Mayura’s safety over cat miraculous. It was a good faceoff and I’m looking forward to more of them in the future.

Ange Goddard
(Right, getting back to these character asks now. I'll finish them over the evening.)
Why I like them: She's a pretty great character, one of Holby's best introductions in recent years. They've done a great job of fleshing her out, I feel like we've gotten to know her much better than we did for some other characters that were there for the same amount of time or even longer. I love how multifaceted she is - she can be kind and gentle when she needs to be, yet also firm and determined, or even both at once.
Why I don't: I don't think there's anything I particularly dislike about her. Uh, she's been pretty patronising to Jason when they've interacted, so there's that, but you could say that about most characters because the Holby writers seem to think the right way to interact with autistic people is to patronise us for some reason. So it's a writing problem, not an Ange problem.
Favourite episode: I don't remember what episode number it was, just that it was a series 21 ep, but she was great in 'Running' - the one where Dom finds out she's his mum.
Favourite season: Torn between series 21 (her first series) and series 23 (the current one)! Series 23 hasn't been great for a lot of characters, but I think it's been pretty good for Ange so far.
Favourite line: Can't think of one.
Favourite outfit: I don't think we've seen it in ages, but I liked that blue coat she had!
OTP: With Josh, obviously. I don't think I ship her with anyone else.
BroTP: Her and her kids. Also, see my point from yesterday about how Ange and Roxanna would have made an EXCELLENT friendship and I'm still sad it'll never happen.
Headcanon: Hm, I'm not actually sure if I have any Ange headcanons! Might have to skip this one.
Unpopular opinion: It's really weird how they wrote it so she was literally barely a teenager when she got pregnant with Dom, and yet they framed his conception as a "normal consensual one-night stand". They said she gave him up when she was 14 in September 1987, right? And his birthday is at the end of March. So that's 9 months for the pregnancy, plus an additional 6 months before she gave him up... she would've been 13 at the oldest (or possibly even younger) when she got pregnant. She wasn't able to consent at that age. Either they should've made her a few years older so she would've been more in her mid-to-late teens, or they should have switched the backstories for the kids so Dom was the product of rape (that was actually acknowledged as rape, I mean) and Chloe's conception was consensual. (But then I guess that wouldn't have let them do the gross "ooh, she's a child of rape and now she's been raped too, aren't we clever" thing with Chloe...)
On a less controversial but probably still unpopular note, while she and Fletch were a relatively better pairing than most of his other romances, I still didn’t think she had any chemistry with him.
A wish: I guess it would be nice if they actually addressed her trauma from being kidnapped by Cameron at some point before the show ends. I don't want them to go super heavy on it because (especially with Josh being ill) we don't need any more misery, but I want it to at least be touched on.
Also I would've liked to see some interaction between her and Henrik during his CSA storyline. It would've been interesting, because they have similar trauma, but they're also very different people who were abused under very different circumstances and have different ways of coping. But now that story's over and done with, I don't want the show touching it with a ten-foot pole ever again, so I'm leaving that particular wish in the past.
An oh-god-please-don't-ever-happen: They had BETTER not break her and Josh up.
5 words to best describe them: Kind, loving, strong, determined, passionate. Go me, I actually came up with 5 words.
My nickname for them: Don't think I have one! Which is weird, because it feels like I should for some reason.

The Many Faces of the Strong Female Character
The much-requested, positive counterpart to my classic “Female Characters to Avoid in Your Writing” and it’s much-later sequel.
Here, I will discuss some of my favorite fictional ladies and what makes them work so well; given my rapturous love of women, there will probably be a sequel! In the meantime, I talk more about portraying female characters here.

1.) The Warrior

When most people hear “strong female character,” they picture the most popular definition of the term: a stony-faced, emotionally shallow, conventionally attractive broad who punches and kicks stuff. She may occasionally shout things like, “I DON’T NEED NO MAN,” while perhaps punching a small baby.
I decided to start with my wife Diana, because she is the perfect antithesis of this trope. She isn’t stony, she’s courageous. She’s unabashed about showing her doubts, hopes, affections, and optimism. Her love interest never steals her spotlight, but she feels no need to shun romance to appear “strong.” She’s beautiful, but not sexualized or objectified.
And while most Strong Female Characters™ are ironically reduced to damsels in distress at some point in their own narratives, Diana consistently takes the lead, totally autonomous over her own story.
You can kick ass AND love babies, people. Joss Whedon, please take notes.

2.) The Comedian

If you haven’t watched Chewing Gum on Netflix, stop whatever you’re doing and watch it right now. Its relatively simple premise – a twenty-four-year-old from a fundamentalist Christian household struggles to lose her virginity – is a segway into a hilarious, genuine exploration of human sexuality, relationships, and how we forge our identities.
Brilliantly portrayed by the series’ creator, Michaela Coel, Tracy is essentially that one friend who knows exactly what you’ve been thinking and isn’t afraid to say so. She is never relegated to a single trope or stereotype. She’s stumbling, clumsily but enthusiastically, through the life experiences that shape us. Most importantly, she is allowed to be sexually curious, awkward, aggressive, insecure, and – I can’t stress this enough – hilarious. The dialogue is infinitely quotable, and endlessly relatable.

Watching shows like Chewing Gum makes me realize how few female characters – and even fe wer Black female characters – are portrayed as truly human. Typically, they’re allowed to be sexy, but not sexual. They’re allowed to be awkward, but only if it’s cute. They can be insecure, but only if that insecurity can easily be solved by the affirmations of a male love interest. And they’re rarely allowed to be the main source of a series’ comedy.
So remember: let your female characters be human. Let them be awkward, funny, sexual philosophers. It’s easier than you think.

3.) The Drama Queen

Watching Riverdale is like hurtling along on a structurally unstable rollercoaster. It’s utterly insane, a lot of fun, and once you’re on, you can’t stop.
But amidst the explosions of batshit crazy plot points, killer cults, and the existential perplexity of finding yourself attracted to emo Jughead, there are some real gems. One of these is Cheryl Blossom, and pretty much every plot line surrounding her.
Cheryl is introduced as a fairly one-dimensional, catty mean girl, though the Regina George-esque charisma with which she’s portrayed makes her instantly likable. Initially, we expect her to be a character we’ll love to hate.

And yet, within the first few episodes, I was impressed by how layered and complex her motivations were. Much of contempt towards others was misdirected rage from an upbringing of extreme emotional abuse, and grief over her dead brother -- all portrayed without a Snape-style condonation of said behavior. By the end of season one, my thoughts were generally, “Oh, crap, I don’t think I can claim to be watching this ‘ironically’ anymore,” and “MORE CHERYL.”

Season two answered my wish, and then some. Cheryl was saved from an (impressively conscientiously portrayed) attempt at sexual assault by a pack of her female friends, and her attacker got the shit beat out of him in one of the most cathartic moments of modern television.
To the exaltation of my queer heart, she also came out as a lesbian, in a deeply moving story arc that I never would have expected from this show. Without spoiling too much, she and her new love interest kissing in front of anti-gay propaganda footage was legitimately one of the most powerful moments I have ever witnessed.

Before the season was over, she viciously threatened her abusive, homophobic mother while covered in blood, shot a serial killer with a bow and arrow, and joined a gang. If that’s not gay culture, I don’t know what is.
Oh, how I wish this show was just about her.

4.) The Lovable Bastard

Ah, The Good Place. I have never experienced such a breath of comedic fresh air. A new philosophical principle each episode, examined and applied in hilarious and thought-provoking ways. A complete absence of harmful stereotypes. Incredibly lovable, three-dimensional, and ever-evolving characters.
I was considering using my queen Tahani for this list, who externally larger-than-life and internally vulnerable after emotional abuse by her parents. Also, she’s hilarious. Everyone and everything in The Good Place is hilarious. And I also thought about talking about Janet, who is the best character in anything ever, but of course:

Instead, I’ll be talking about bisexual icon Eleanor, who is something very few female characters get to be: the lovable bastard.

Eleanor, when we first meet her, is not traditionally good in any sense of the word. She turned down a high-paying job because she was expected to be nice to people. She sold placebos to the elderly, and was great at it. She was drunken, slovenly, hedonistic, and selfish. And she’s instantly incredibly likable.
Why and how Eleanor is so enjoyable, even at her very worst, merits an essay all its own. But in a nutshell:
We empathize with her. We are introduced to “The Good Place” completely through her eyes. We are in her shoes.
The stakes are high. When we discover that her entry into the good place was a mistake, we want her to be okay.
We come to understand her, and how her terrible childhood shaped her destructive behavior.
She wants to be a better person, and with time, effort, and character development, we watch her become one.
Not only is this an amazing lesson in how to endear audiences to your character, it is also infinitely refreshing. The most famous lovable bastards are all men -- Han Solo, Dr. House, Captain Jack Sparrow, the Man With No Name, et cetera -- but women are rarely afforded the same moral complexity. If a woman in fiction has done bad things, she’s not usually a lovable bastard. She’s usually a bitch.
Eleanor isn’t just a great character. She conveys an important lesson: women are people. People with the same capacity for mistakes, growth, redemption, and love as anyone else.

5.) The Cinderella

Yep. I said it. Cinderella is a strong female character.
My girl not only survived in an abusive household, she persistently stayed positive. She worked each day to make the best of an impossible situation, from which she had no means of escape. That takes an insane amount of courage and tenacity.
But Caff, I hear you scream, she needed help to escape!! Well, my imaginary counterargument, so the fuck what? MOST people need help to escape their abusive situations, and there’s no shame in that. Accepting help from someone you trust is the best thing you can do in a situation such as that, and implying otherwise is horribly damaging to victims of abuse.
But she married the prince, you more feebly protest. Yes! She did! She found love and happiness and a great life in a socially influential position! And that’s an amazing message!
So in the flurry of female warriors, let’s not forget Cinderella, who tells people that their terrible circumstances won’t last forever, to stay hopeful and kind, and that accepting help from a trusted friend can lead to a happy life.
Cinderella is a bad bitch, and she deserves her happily ever after.

Other examples: For some reason, I’m thinking of Sansa from Game of Thrones. When people try to discredit her as a strong character, they often make similar complaints. But both, quite fittingly, end up as queens.
