proximity chat has done a lot for hermitcraft. it makes the server feel closer and chattier, that's for sure. but there's a special warmth in pre prox chat silent interactions on the server. something special in the little hello dances and block punch waves. the in game chat becomes a lifeline and it was a delight to watch during timelapses.

the vibe of pre prox chat quiet hermitcraft was very much we are apart from each other, but we are here together. the hermit you are watching is alone, but never lonely.

my favourite example of this kind of phenomenon is the interactions between Cleo and TFC during demise in season six. some context: Cleo was still working as a teacher, and TFC was living in a different timezone with shoddy internet. they could never hop into a discord call together, never be online together. and yet they played.

TFC started season six by vanishing underground to build a fallout vault (not a bunker, he was very adamant about that). He rarely surfaced, only occasionally sticking his head above ground to marvel in confusion and what the others had done (and break Sahara). When demise came around, he decided to play, donning iron armour and carrying on as usual, avoiding basic traps placed in his base.

this is where Cleo comes in. Cleo, being Cleo, has announced that demise is a game between hermit and hubris, and has promptly fled anywhere she's been known to frequent (bolt hole strategy). for a while they slip into TFC's walls, just as Joe hides in the statue of Hemitry.

Now TFC is working on a fall out bunker, and Cleo likes fall out, so she slips into the base and begins to add armour stands. With them are puzzles that match the game lore with an accuracy that delights TFC when he finds them. He solves her puzzles and they come back to continue the story in armour stand diorama.

They never speak to each other, just play when they are on, conversing in the hermitcraft love language of pranks. in this time, Cleo dies in demise (falling to the hubris of trusting Keralis and Bdubs). Dead human Cleo rises, ready to kill, and TFC is happily caught up in their game.

Cleo sets another trail in the story that the pair of them are telling with armour stands. It ends with a book on a lectern for TFC to read, writing the demise plotline into the fallout lore of his base.

The vaults were never meant to protect, after all. And TFC falls for it, plummeting into the lava below, inventory full of the things that could save him - fire resist, blocks, water bucket. And yet he sits in the lava and just laughs, tired of demise and happy to give Cleo the kill they've worked so hard for.

The interaction means so much to me. They are never on at the same time, and yet they are playing together. Not having prox chat means that the game is drawn out and it spans episodes, a compilation of hard work and friendship.

And all the while, TFC refers to Cleo as 'everyone's favourite zombie mistress of cthulu' and Cleo delights in building new offerings for her friend

I love how this scene dodged the "blood relatives are your REAL family no matter what" trope. When Morty learns about Prime, he doesn't chase after him or angst about which Rick is his "real" grandfather. He just disowns him on the spot.

Same with "Unmortricken." Morty doesn't give two shits about Prime Rick, and it stays that way. No "Oh boy, should I follow this guy and learn who my REAL grandfather is?" or anger toward C-137 for killing his last blood relative. Prime is no grandfather of his.

s6 was so much fun like it had everything. X Files AU and aliens, Twilight parody, Western AU, oh, they're in the real world as Jared and Jensen, The-Episode-That-Launched-A-Thousand-Omegaverse-Fanfics, Hot-As-Fuck Soulless!Sam who is a bit of a psycho, an overarching plot that felt almost like a classic Detective Mystery with a clever plottwist, Dragons!, Dean as a housewife (sort of), and oh yeah a What-If-The-Titanic-Never-Sunk AU.

Okay, finished again and have some additional thoughts.

Upon the second rewatch, I feel like Lucy, in her spiraling, needed her boyfriend. Instead, she got Sargent Bradford. I still don't think he did anything wrong per say (I'm still unclear if the clown music was him? If it was, it's childish and unnecessary.) But, ultimately, I think it once again comes back to their communication and setting better expectations.

I also feel like she was projecting quite a bit, whether she realized it or not. Having said that, watching again made me realize that she's dumping on Tim like this because she feels safe enough to do so. If we look back, her big thing with Chris was that they never fought. Lucy, (albeit going about it in the wrong way IMO, but that's anxiety for you.) feels secure enough in this relationship to unload, to fight. That to me is a good sign.

This fight/conversation needed to happen. I think the writers could have done a better storyline with it, but it is what it is. In any event, I do hope this opens up their communication more, especially when it comes to needs and expectations.

ever wanted to get into season six of hermitcraft? i've collated every episode of the demise arc so that you can view them as if it is running live. this playlist runs in order by upload date and contains every relevant video alongside each week's hermitcraft recap. i've also collected a playlist of the fan created demise content on youtube.

what was demise and why watch it?

it is grian's first attempt at creating a hardcore based game (it then evolved into third life and last life)

demise makes death matter on hermitcraft, as players attempt to survive on the 'alive' team for as long as possible whilst the 'dead' team try to trap them

only two members of the active whitelist were not playing demise (python and zedaph). even tfc joined in with the game

demise ran at the very end of season sixfinity, letting the corporate machines of concorp, sahara, and idea fund the unfathomable grind of hermits trying to murder each other

redstone hermits are allowed to murder. they know not restraint

there's a lot of death themed lore. cleo becomes human. joe becomes a lich. ren becomes a reaper. a whole group become dragons. doc repeatedly makes deals with the devil

the dramatic finale happened on christmas eve

crypts were in vogue and everyone was dressing up as corpses

some hermits got revived afterwards, but some never did

This tweet's original post is full of stories about networks and creators derailing, ruining and canceling shows once they earned a female fanbase. People ask for an example of a TV show where the opposite happened. Would they believe me if I mentioned a little show called Rick and Morty? (No, they wouldn't.)

Despite season one's issues, including a whole episode where the writers spewed through Rick "Girls are DUMB and don't understand science! No girls allowed!!", the series attracted a huge female and LGBT fanbase.

Instead of doubling down to scare us off, Adult Swim famously hired more female writers for season three, dismissing the dudebros' ire. This could've been a token gesture to ward off bad press, but they continued hiring female writers for later seasons.

Other developments include selling merchandise at Rue 21 and Charlotte Russe, collaborating with Dolls Kill and Glamlite, introducing another female character (Space Beth) and firing a certain misogynist creep despite his status as co-creator and lead voice actor, which the dudebros didn't take very well. Elon Musk publicly whined about it.

Seasons six and seven are when the writers really started emphasizing Rick's attachment to his daughters, granddaughter and late wife. He flat-out says that he respects Summer and she reminds him of Diane. "No" also disappears from his vocabulary when one of them wants something.

The series also starts giving the Tumblr side of the fandom what we want: Rick in a suit and tie, Rick announcing that Rickcest is canon, Beth and Space Beth dating, Rick giving Morty his lab coat when they're cold (a fandom staple since season one), more acknowledgement that Rick is autistic, etc. Meanwhile, the bro contingent gets increasingly angry about Rick and Morty going "woke," which Adult Swim ignores.

But good luck saying this outside the fandom because the general reaction is "haha you like the cringe pickle man show 🤪"
