Sebard(agni) AU idea #3456:

A modern AU inspired by the Japanese series 「初恋」(Hatsukoi, aka First Love).

The series is about two people who are high school sweethearts but lose touch after one of them has an accident and literally forgets about the years they knew one another. Then, ~20 years later, they reconnect partly bc the one who didn’t lose their memory could never forget their first love.

(This series slayed me and so this will be long.)

Setting: US, Modern AU

Pairing: Sebard(agni)

Bard would be Harumichi. He joined the military straight out of high school because it had always been his dream to be a pilot, He was a bit of a slacker in high school and didn’t plan to go to college, but he happened to see Seb at a ACT test and it was love at first sight. So he studied his butt off so he could go to the same school as Seb. After Seb loses memory of their relationship, he decides to go into the military anyway, partly to distract himself from his heartbreak, and also bc he never really fit in at college. Ultimately, he leaves the military and gets work as a security guard. Bard’s dated causally over the years, and even has a good friend and long-time fuck buddy, Agni (who may live with him; not sure yet), but he’s never once gotten over Seb. He compares everyone he’s ever been with to him (of any gender), and when they inevitably come up short, finds an excuse to break things off or keep things casual. Poor man has it bad.

Seb would be Yae, the one who lost their memory. He had a brilliant future before he was injured and lost his memory and had to drop out of school. An abusive marriage that ended badly. I suspect he was first told the injury was an accident but later found out it was caused by his ex, Claude. Ever since he escaped him, he’s moved around a lot and changed his name. He works at a call center so he has minimum contact with the public, and although he’s happy with his life and his cat, he’s constantly on edge that Claude will find him again. He avoids most relationships of any kind, not only out of fear but also bc he never knows when he’ll have to pick up and cut all ties again.

Agni would be Bard’s best friend and fuck buddy. I think they met by chance. Bard’s brother is Deaf, so he’s fluent in ASL, and he intervened when Agni runs into some asshole hearies at a restaurant and invites him over for dinner. They hit it off and become friends. (Harumachi’s sister is Deaf in the show.) Agni understands that Bard will never love anyone else aside from Seb, and is probably the one who pushed him to reconnect with him.

I think Bard happens to get a call from Seb (bc of his job) and he has a particular vocal tic that Bard recognizes immediately. He calls him by his old name, which causes Seb to panic and hang up. He spends the next few days terrified that he’d been found and debates about quitting his job and moving again, but his cat is sick so he has to take her to the vet.

At the vet, Seb happens to run into Bard in the waiting room. Agni has a cat, but since Bard works nights, asked him to take them for him. Bard immediately recognizes Seb, but ofc Seb doesn’t know who Bard is, and they get to chatting. Seb is closed off at first, but Bard is so affable he finds himself relaxing around him, and they establish a tentative friendship. But Bard is worried about telling Seb the truth about their paths, not sure how it will affect Seb or their relationship.

I think I would end up making this a poly ship. Seb sees Agni and Bard kissing one day when he tries to show up to surprise Bard and assumes that Bard was cheating on his boyfriend, so he ghosts him. Not knowing why Seb has gone silent suddenly, Agni comes up with an over-the-top and very much not Bard kind of romantic gesture to win Seb back. It makes Seb laugh so much it gives Bard the opportunity to talk with him and get the misunderstanding fixed. He then invites Seb to meet Agni. To Agni’s shock, Seb seems to know how to sign too, and they end up hitting it off.

There would definitely be angst and whump in this. Claude still sees Seb as “his,” and I’m sure that will cause issues, and ofc the “love triangle” element. But there’s a lot of room for “fated love” elements. Like Seb always buying the same brand of cigarettes (either he doesn’t smoke at all or those aren’t the kind he prefers) bc they comfort him and he doesn’t know why. Later, he finds out that Bard smokes that brand. 🥺

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about this AU for a couple weeks months now, and unlike some of my other AU ideas, I would LOVE to bring this one to life. The show is so well written and I love how it wove the diff timelines and love stories together so perfectly. It’s been awhile since I wrote a romance story and I think this would be a great one.

But it's just an outline and the author saying: "Never say never, but I don't think I'll be finishing this story again someday.". GSDJYKGLHOIJ ohhh sweet summer anon... there may be some big time sexual tension, but in this particular sebard storyline... they've only kissed as many times as I've written, and nothing more 😈 I know that must be torture to some of you smut enthusiasts, but despite my own bisexual horny frustrations, I LOVE writing long game, slow, romantic shit 💖 So ya'll will have to endure.

And the mating bond concept is a thing @grelleswife and I came up with and have explored together in our collab writing The Owl and the Raven, a Sebamey centric story. But I realized in that last sebard drabble that I absolutely wanted to explore it again, just with a different ship. uwu It's basically a familiar concept of like, bonded souls or something I'm sure most people have seen. Like the whole "red string of fate" trope, but make it DEMONIC. Lmao. Basically if a demon such as Sebastian grows close enough to develop feeling of a romantic nature, but of course in whatever way demons feel it, they start to connect to that person in a way deeper way than physical and literal like we humans do. It's a logical way, in my opinion, to explain why maybe you don't hear or read about demons being romantic or demon courting, unless its in a bad or smutty light like seducing scenes. This bond that forms unconsciously with this other the demon wants to eventually be with, even if they themselves don't realize it or deny it in many cases, is like an extra intimate special way a demon can stay close to their "mate", as they call them. So it's no surprise that this doesn't happen a LOT or is unheard of. What demon who wants to hunt souls greedily and have fun their whole lives tricking and messing with humanity wanna suddenly be weighed down by a lover??? So I think basically these sorts of things only happen at a certain POINT in a demon's long life; like when they no longer NEED to eat souls as much, and no longer wish to mess around with humans. Like finally feeling like settling down and having a family like humans do! And it works out pretty interesting I'm sure with a demon + another demon; how it SHOULD go normally. The demons come together, court each other in whatever ways they do for the types of demons they are (like a crow/bird demon dancing and flaunting for their possible mate and bringing them shiny presents to show they care 🖤), and once the bond forms between them on BOTH SIDES, they can feel each other's emotions, talk to each other mentally, find where the other is much faster than if they weren't mated; and over long long looong distances too! So it's only natural and meant to happen between these two.

HOWEVER, for this bonding to at some point "activate" with a human the demon has been around and close to long enough... oh boy it's quite a trip. Almost embarrassing in some cases. Basically like a demon's equivalent of "WHY DO I HAVE A CRUSH ON THEM??? I DON'T WANT THIS!!! 🙈🙈🙈" And also the fact remains that a human is a human, they can't feel at all a bond forming on their end. 😭

So sometimes I'm sure these things don't last long and rarely happen at all, seeing as the smart thing to do is to move away and separate themselves from that particular human! ... If they really, really don't want this, that is.

But.. for a demon who might grow curious and hopeful, for they have grown to.. at least like this human in particular..

Well it's certainly seems like the beginning of something different from this demon's usual interactions with humans. 🖤

Finally... I will admit I don't know for certain when I will continue this, I can't promise anything, anon!! TwT But know that because I did enjoy getting to this point, I'll def. likely come back or keep going with my own little take on sebard 🥰 So thank you for enjoying my writing!!!

Hmm well, if you only watch the anime, you may not see a lot of scenes between them, but in the manga (specially bard's recent arc) it's FULL of shippy moments that made me happy 😊

But I've been shipping them way before that, honestly.... I think i started really really liking them together in 2019, when @plague-of-insomnia and i started collaborating on [Where Demons Hide]

Their relationship in that fic, paired with bard's backstory in the manga, paired with @apocalypticromantic666 's awesome sebard stories, made Sebard my fave ship 😅

Also there's the superficial reason: they look hot together 🔥

ive been focusing on this google drive so long its turned my brain to mush so the obvious thing to combat that is sebard

them becoming fuck buddies because sebastian can see bard needs an outlet or he'll become annoying af in the kitchen and bards not about to complain over no strings sex, but then as they become closer in their everyday life the sex changes too- their touches become softer, they kiss more than they used to, sometimes they linger after they finish as if not wanting to let go of the moment

both of them having their own private freak outs over the realization that they're falling for the other. and then of course the realizations that theyll never be able to love the other in a 'normal' way- bard still loves his wife and he'll definitely never be able to give himself so fully to someone again without fearing he's going to lose them, and sebastian well. is a demon so he straight up cannot love in the same way humans can so he has a different version of it in a sense

obviously sebastian is the first to bring this up because he's rather blunt sometimes, but somehow hearing that sebastian cant love him 'normally' either just relieves bard. it just brings them closer after that, helping them settle into a relationship that is uniquely theirs. it may not be a fairy tale sort of thing, but bard gets to feel the strictest man in the world relax when bard holds him so he thinks theyre doing something right

Six Sentence Sunday: New AU Snippet

So this is quite a lot longer than 6 sentences, but since I haven’t posted any snippets of anything in a few weeks I thought I’d go ahead and share this.

This is for the sebard AU I’m hoping to write for the holiday season, with Firefighter Bard and Priest Sebastian.

Just my favorite recipe of two broken people coming together to heal, with the added kinkiness of one being a Catholic priest, bc priest Seb is always hot, right?

Keep in mind this project is in the early stages so things are subject to change by the time it’s ready on AO3.

The witching hour, and as usual, Father Sebastian couldn’t sleep. So instead of lying in bed staring at the same cracks in the rectory ceiling for hours, he was in the sanctuary, cleaning and tiding up.

It wasn’t necessary, of course. The widow who helped him manage the church also took care of the maintenance, since he didn’t need her to cook. But idleness, Devil’s invite or not, had never suited Sebastian.

He gathered up the box of candles and went and replaced all of the plain ones around the altar before moving on to the prayer candles, some of which still glowed from the parishioners who’d lit them the day before.

Out of habit, once he’d replaced any that had burned away to a pile of wax, he lit one of his own, murmuring an “Our Father” in rapid Spanish before doing the sign of the cross.

He didn’t have anyone specific in mind when he did this ritual, and sometimes wondered if he lit the candle for himself. It was pathetic that a priest felt he needed a light to guide him to God’s help, and yet here he was. Again.

He sighed and gathered up the cleaning and other supplies to carry back to the sacristy to store them away until tomorrow night, when he’d likely repeat his vigil again.

Despite having to rise early for morning mass each day, sleep often eluded him, and he had become so used to making do on only a handful of hours of rest each day that it had become normal.

After all, the fatigue weighing heavily on his shoulders was a pleasant distraction from the emptiness within him he had tried and failed to fill with God.

He had just re-emerged from the sacristy when he heard the creak of the large wooden doors at the front of the church, which led into the narthex, just before the main worship hall, or nave.

Sebastian hadn’t yet locked up completely; it was rare for anyone to wander in so late, especially since his church was located in a quiet, peaceful residential area. And yet, despite this, Sebastian had felt it wrong for him to be awake and not keep the doors open for anyone who might seek shelter or guidance in the wee hours.

The man who entered was blond, broad and muscled, hands jammed into his pockets, wandering in as if he were lost. And perhaps he was, in more ways than one.

Striding closer, Sebastian greeted him. “Welcome, my son,” he said. “May I help you?” his voice echoed in the large, empty space, magnifying the lilt of his British accent, a corruption of the public school manor of speaking he’d picked up as a child, mangled with his mother’s Spanish flavor and years of living in Texas.

The man seemed startled, glancing around and blinking as if waking from a dream. He cleared his throat. But didn’t answer.

Now, Sebastian recognized him. Bardroy Simms. Though it had been more than five years, this man had been a part of his congregation, faithfully coming to 9AM mass every single Sunday with his wife and son, excepting the days he was on duty at the fire station.

Sebastian hadn’t been assigned here long enough to marry the man and his wife, but he had baptized their son, and given him his first reconciliation and communion, the first steps for any Catholic on their way to being a full member of the faith.

. . . And he had also given them last rites in the hospital, before the hard decision to end life support was made.

And, of course, he had presided over their funerals.

Sebastian still remembered the heat of that day, the hot sun burning into his black cassock. How Bard had stared blankly without shedding a single tear as his wife and son were laid to rest.

Until today, Sebastian had never seen the man again once the dirt was shoveled and the mourners had left. He had tried to reach out, but what could a priest who had never married—let alone had children of his own—know about the grief that man was enduring?

Sebastian’s job was supposed to be the people’s connection to God, to counsel and to guide when they needed him most, and he had failed Bard.

Bard didn’t sink into a pew, simply stopped halfway to the altar, to Sebastian. Now that he could see him better, his face was unshaven, golden stubble catching the light from the candles, dark bags beneath his eyes, his short hair disheveled.

He scratched his cheek absently, swallowed thickly, before saying, “Saw the lights were still on. Figured this’s better than falling into a bottle again.”

Sebastian inhaled sharply, took a few steps closer. “Why don’t I make you some tea and we can talk. I’m a good listener.”

The man seemed confused but simply nodded. “Thank you, Father.”

Sebastian wanted to say he was only doing his duty, helping a parishioner in need, but that wasn’t the truth. Not really. It was selfish and prideful and he’d need to do penance for it later, but the reality was he wanted to make up for his past failings.

His shoes clicked and echoed as he walked toward the front doors.

Sebastian had an idea why Bard was here suddenly after so many years’ absence. He had read about the recent apartment fire that had killed half a dozen people, including a boy of around seven. His photo and family had been all over the news.

Bard was a hero who had saved many lives that day, but Sebastian knew the boy’s death had to be haunting him. He even looked a little like the son he’d lost all those years ago.

Securing all the locks on the main door, he did a quick sign of the cross, kissing his fingers before turning back to face the altar.

Bard stood, staring up at the large crucifix that hung on the wall beneath the stained glass as if hoping for divine revelation. Or perhaps a bolt from the blue to put him out of his misery.

That was certainly a feeling Sebastian could relate to.

Dunno if we’re allowed to send multiple asks for the follower celebration thing, but I was wondering— what was your inspiration for “Heart of the Sea”? (The pairing, the setting, etc.)

You most certainly are, darling. Ask away to your heart's content. 😊 The only restriction is the number of drabbles I can do, as it takes a while for me to finish those.

As far as my inspiration for this fic, it was a culmination of a few things.

I had been reading a siren!Sebastian/Claudia Phantomhive RP @rxseandscythe and @rotcon had posted on here. This is what initially got my two brain cells volleying this idea around, though at the time it was going to be a reader insert one shot. An AU where Sebastian is a breathtakingly handsome mythological creature who lures unsuspecting humans to their demise is rather fitting to his canon demonic nature. But no matter what scenario I worked up for the one shot idea, I could never find one that worked to my liking. So I tabled it until a more fitting scenario presented itself.

The nature of this pose in media is typically used with the intention of creating sexual tension between two characters. Given Bard’s expression, I'm sure he's doing this to get the butler’s attention because nothing else is working, but it hints at the chemistry these two have (and that it's not just a one-sided seduction on Sebastian’s part).

3. The few delicious Sebard one shots I read as a result of said aforementioned artwork. They continued to open me up to the possibility that a "relationship" of sorts could develop between the two.

4. Posts on here from @amanitus, @luci-on-the-moon, and you, which further spurned my interest in this rare pairing.

5. The fact that I love both these characters. Sebastian is appealing because...well, honestly, he's a pretty complete package. He's got the looks, the charm, and the brains. 6. I've also never written a m/m fic before. I've always wanted to, but I would always chicken out, mainly because I don't have experience with it and I want to be respectful and accurate with how I render the relationship, especially the sex. But finally I was like "F*ck it, let's do this!" and here we are, lol. 😂

I chose the time period because it's another one I've always enjoyed. Life, in a lot of ways, was simpler. But that simplicity also led to isolation, which is one of the themes I wanted to capture in this short story. I don't think it could've worked as well or easily in a more modern world. Technology and social media probably would narrow Sebastian’s hunting grounds quite a bit and he would be resigned to strictly hunting sailors, naval personnel, and oil rig workers. Plus this is a time period I've never written for before, so I wanted to try my hand at it.

I chose the setting of a lighthouse because, again, it's isolating which continues to fuel Bard’s loneliness, depression, and PTSD. Plus it makes him choice prey for Sebastian. Sirens cannot take on large groups of humans, so they have to lure their prey, single them out, which is much easier to accomplish when they've already isolated themselves. Isolated people are also easier to lure because they crave companionship and see a kindred spirit in the siren. Also, being a lighthouse keeper allows Bard constant and easy access to the sea.

anyway thoughts on the canon sebastian & tanaka relationship?? i kinda see it as like a halfway father/son thing bc of the mentor/mentee relationship & seb actually respecting him

Hey, anon. I’ll confess I hadn’t given too much thought to their relationship before I got this ask. I have not read Idonquixote’s Seb/Tanaka fics (yet), but I am a huge fan of their sebard series and have read it a few times.

But this ask did inspire me to incorporate Tanaka into my new sebagni story, Synchronize. It’s not canon, so not directly in response to this ask, but in that fic, Tanaka is definitely a father/grandfather figure to Seb. He raised him and cares for him like his own child. I really adore their relationship in that story. (I’ll be posting the first chapter on AO3 soon, either today or maybe after Valentine’s Day so it’s not lost in the deluge lol.)

As for canon, I do think Tanaka is a very interesting character who isn’t talked about much. I suspect he’s not entirely human himself (how many old men can cut a bullet in half or easily flip a grown man twice his size and half his age?). And I’ve always thought that he knows a lot more than it may seem.

Like, I think he knew OC wasn’t “Ciel” and was truly glad to see he was alive, not bc he thought he was the heir but just bc he loved him and was relieved he had survived. I also think he knows that Sebastian isn’t just some butler. Whether he knows he’s not human or that he’s a demon, ofc I can’t say. But he definitely seems to have suspicions.

For example, when Seb comes back to life he doesn’t seem surprised, and even scoffs, “A Phantomhive butler dying before his master…unheard of” or something to that effect, but in a way that it’s like he was saying “yeah I know this whole thing was a setup.”

Even though I had not given it too much thought, I do think Sebastian does respect Tanaka as “the epitome of a butler” and as such has looked to him for advice and such. Even if he doesn’t always take it (like in the Green Witch arc), I think he acknowledges that Tanaka has served the Phantomhives well and loyally for years and that means something.

Since he’s a demon, I’m not sure if I could describe a relationship with anyone in familial terms bc I don’t think Seb would look at it that way. But I do think there aren’t many humans that have earned his respect, and I suspect Tanaka is one of them. I think part of why he knew he could be “dead” and unable to directly protect Ciel was because Tanaka would be there. Not only as protector but to keep the household running as well.

I think it’s also significant that Tanaka is the one who Seb will allow to do whatever while the other servants are always being yelled at.
