BACKSTORY AND TALENT
Myth was raised by a family of academics and alumni of Hope’s Peak, and thus, Myth has a massive appreciation for all things academia. Ever since Myth was little, she has shown stunning aptitude in math, and eventually, it became her favorite subject in school. Myth was also captain of her school’s Math Bowl team, after usurping the previous captain in a battle of wits. Before Myth was invited to join the Hope’s Peak roster, Myth attended a very prestigious school district, and garnered local fame for her mathematical prowess. Her mathematical aptitude is so large, that she can solve complex mathematical equations, such as calculus, mentally and in under half a minute. These skills make her a valuable asset in both competitions and mathematical journals. As an adult, she runs a mathematics tutoring business, for younger struggling students.

RELATIONSHIPS
Wyre Anon, Former Ultimate Baton Twirler
Two halves of a whole nerd, these two have been best friends ever since they first met in the same prestigious academy. As opposed to the math club, Wyre was part of the marching band as the head baton twirler, and garnered infamy for her prowess at leading the band. Despite Wyre’s wild and crude nature contrasting heavily against both her former academy and Myth’s personality, Wyre is like Myth’s personal cheerleader and hype girl, always there to pick Myth up on her low days and defend her against people who want to pick on Myth’s weight. In return, Myth offers Wyre tutoring to help her get through the private school. 
Outfit: A blue and red majorette outfit with a matching hat, glasses are clean and unbroken.
Anon Scar, Ultimate Gardener
Fancying herself as the “Supreme High Overlord of The Valley of Death”, said ”Valley of Death” is actually simply a very large flower garden that Scar tends to all by herself. With a vast botanical knowledge and a caring and maternal nature towards both plants and people, underneath her constant supernatural boasting. Myth never really had much experience with botany, but she uses her conversations with Scar as learning experiences. While Scar finds Myth polite and kindhearted enough, Scar’s maternal instincts just flair up, every time she witnesses Myth get stressed and then shoving unhealthy snacks into her face.
Outfit: Hair in a side plait and decorated with small flowers, a hooded black cloak and matching makeup, over a copper and green dress, nothing on her feet.
Fusion Anon, Ultimate Billiards Player
Originally from a less-than-fortunate family, Fusion has taken it to the pool tables to earn his family money. Fusion’s accurate eyesight and strategic mindset lets him dominate every pool tournament that he enters. Myth and Fusion both bond over their intellectual interests and their love for snacks. In fact, Myth and Fusion usually meet up to exchange snacks with each other. Fusion is currently trying to teach Myth how to play billiards, viewing Myth’s intelligence as a great advantage on the pool table. Similar to Scar, Fusion carries himself with a parental air and regularly looks after the other Ultimates like they are his children. 
Outfit: A blue and yellow striped vest over a red tie with a star on it and a white dress shirt, glasses, pants and shoes from original design, always carries and stims with his lucky pool cue.
Fusion Anon II, Ultimate Knitter
As much as Fusion II tries to pull off the rebellious teenager act, it’s a bit hard to do that, considering she knits in her spare time and donates her knitted crafts to charity. While at first, Myth viewed Fusion II as simply a thug from the wrong side of the rails and Fusion II viewed Myth as a reminder of her nerdy self from middle school, her opinion of the knitter quickly changed once she learned about her charitable and kindhearted side, particularly to children and elders. Now the two’s relationship are on the more positive side, with a private intellectual meme chat being the ultimate deciding factor in their friendship. 
Outfit: Same outfit from the original, but with a red scarf around her neck and blue gloves and brown boots with white fluff on the inside.
Just Anon, Ultimate DJ
DJanon is well-known in underground nightclubs for his energetic music mixes and his expertise in hyping up his audience. Many rumors claim that he is nocturnal, and it’s not hard to see why, for he seems to lose all of his energy during the day and become grouchy and lazy. Myth never really was experienced when it comes to music, and Janon’s music just seems to hurt her ears. Janon doesn’t seem to like anyone who reminds him of school, so the hatred between Myth and Janon is mutual. However, Janon has a secret soft spot for the preteen fanbase of his that he desperately wants to keep hidden.
Outfit: A pink Daft Punk style helmet with bunny ears on top, a pink jumpsuit with blue circuit patterns, light blue boots.
Sparkle Anon, Former Ultimate Jazz Musician
As both an expert on both the saxophone and the piano and a person with a very flashy stage presence, it is no wonder that Sparkle is the leading lady of her all-female jazz troupe, ”THE SPECTACULAR SONGSTRESSES”. As opposed to Janon’s music, Myth finds Sparkle’s music to be much more pleasant to listen to. Myth may not understand much of Sparkle’s over-dramatic demeanor and vocabulary, but she stays silent and tries her best to keep up with the energetic attitude of the jazz musician. Sparkle appreciates the high class and intelligent musical tastes of Myth, and usually lets Myth preview her new jazz songs. 
Outfit: A black fedora, a black overcoat slung around her shoulders, a white dress shirt with golden music note buttons, a red tie, black pants, black slip-on shoes.
Egg Anon, Former Ultimate Soccer Player, and Wet Sock Anon, Former Ultimate Actor
Both of these twins have achieved stardom and became role models for NB youth everywhere. They also have a penchant for creeping people out with the cursed images they put into people‘s heads, but the similarities stop there. While Egg is an inspiration for non-binary people thanks to their athletic prowess securing wins for their varsity team, Wet Sock inspires and astonishes non-binary people, thanks to their famous face and stellar performance skills on both theater sets and movie sets. As much as Myth tries to be polite when interacting with the Freak Twins, their verbal intrusive thoughts just disgust her.
Egg’s Outfit: A green headband, a green and dark blue track jacket, a white tanktop, shorts that match their jacket, white socks, blue and green cleats.
Wet Sock’s Outfit: A black and white tuxedo with a light green scarf.
Curious Anon, Jr. Ultimate Film Director
Despite their age and relative newness to the job, Curious has garnered fame for their high-budget and gripping emotional tales on the big screen. But the one film that truly sealed their fame as a director was ”The Ice Cage”, a film detailing a person slowly moving out of the glass shell that they have been put into by society. Because of their similar polite and passive temperaments, Myth and Curious get along very well. While Myth may not have much experience with the arts, she uses her conversations with Curious as learning opportunities to gain more knowledge on the creative process.
Outfit: Same outfit from the original, but with a black jacket and beret.
Anon Nerd, Former Ultimate Kickboxer
Dominating the underground kickboxing tournaments that are frequently held in his less-than-stellar hometown, Nerd‘s sheer physical power is nothing to laugh at and many people yearn to learn Nerd’s ways. Unfortunately, Nerd isn’t exactly the best when it comes to being kind to others, and responds to foreign emotions with his fists and feet. Nerd can’t help but want to whip the chubby mathematician into shape, upon seeing her get stressed and stress eat as a result. But Nerd’s aggressive training just scares the kindly mathematician away, much to the kickboxing champion’s chagrin and anger. 
Outfit: Black shorts held up by a white drawstring, bandaged-up arms and feet, a black bathrobe over all that.
Eldritch Anon, Ultimate Party Planner
As a strong believer in Murphy’s Law, Eldritch shoots and double-shoots to make sure that every party that he plans goes off without a hitch, and nothing bad will ever happen. This mindset may make him a great planner, but he isn’t so crash-hot, when he actually attends the parties he planned. Fortunately, Myth is polite and easily-pleased, which is a pass in Eldritch’s party-planning and people-pleasing book. Unfortunately, Eldritch found out that Myth gets easily stressed, so he has to remove any stress—arousing things from any party that she happens to be attending. At least Eldritch now has some common ground with Myth.
Outfit: A green and yellow party hat on his head, hair stained with streamers and sprinkles, a pink camo jacket with his pockets stuffed with party favors over a light pink shirt with blue and yellow balloons on the front, shorts and slippers from original design.
Dream Anon, Ultimate BMX Biker
Commonly known by the stunt community as the “Pink Pinball”, Dream became famous on the internet for her filmed BMX stunts, and her bright pink ensemble she wears while performing said stunts. She regularly frequents skate parks and bike-racing tracks to practice her skills, and even established a BMX club at her school. Dream and Myth are complete opposites in just about everything, so Dream regularly gives proper workout sessions (unlike Nerd) and encourages Myth to loosen up and live on the edge, and Myth regularly looks after Dream to make sure her stunts aren‘t too dangerous. 
Outfit: A bright pink and grey jump suit with a matching motorcycle helmet. 
Iris Anon, Jr. Ultimate Glassblower
As the latest child in a long and prestigious line of glassblowers, it was expected by her parents that Iris would carry the family business. Despite her parent’s doubts due of her supreme clumsiness, Iris is amazing at both creating and delivering drinking glasses and adorable glass trinkets, which happen to be her two major specialities. Despite her optimistic temperament, Iris has anxiety that she tries desperately to hide underneath her happy and slightly ditzy facade. Myth can especially relate to keeping up a facade to mask anxiety, and Iris regularly imparts wisdom onto Myth to help the constantly-stressed mathematician.
Outfit: Hair pulled back into a braided ponytail, a pair of brown goggles over her eyes, a grey jumpsuit, black gloves and boots.
Purple Anon, Ultimate Sailor
Well-known amongst her peers for piloting the P.S Prose, Purple sailed across the vast and open ocean, and dodged dangerous storms, waves and wildlife along the way. Unfortunately, spending all your time surrounded by nothing but water doesn’t exactly do wonders for your social skills, for Purple is shockingly timid and regularly hides behind her good friend Fusion. Despite Purple’s archaic maritime terms confusing everybody but Myth and Fusion, Purple is still very sweet and kind. Myth offering Purple some of her anti-stress candy was the start of a simply beautiful friendship. 
Outfit: A white captain‘s hat, hair tied into small pigtails, a purple overcoat over a blue and white striped shirt and a black ascot, black pants, tall white socks, black shoes.
This series centers around the secretly-stressed mathematician learning about new anti-stress techniques from her colorful peers, in order to combat her constant stress-snacking.

APPEARANCE
Myth wears her brown hair down with hairpins on each side that resemble a plus and minus sign. Myth wears the same uniform from her old private school that she (much to her embarrassment) still is able to fit into. It consists of a black jacket that has math-themed pins over a white dress shirt and a red and blue tie, a white and light blue checkered skirt that resembles a line graph. On her legs and feet are black leggings and red Mary Janes. Because of her chronic snacking, Math!Myth has a plumper figure compared to Romantic!Myth.

PERSONALITY
Because of her upbringing, Math!Myth has a taste for anything scholastic or pertaining to academics, and always appreciates a good intellectual conversation. Math!Myth carries herself with a polite and courteous demeanor, treating all men like kings and all women like queens. Unfortunately, underneath that calm and well-put-together facade, is a very stressed young lady. Because Math!Myth doesn’t like stress, she tries her best to stave off the stress. However, stress-eating is her go-to-method for dealing with stress, and the other Anons are trying their best to teach Myth a proper way of dealing with constant stress and anxiety. On the plus side, Myth is a constant source of snacks for the other Anons. If anyone needs a snack, they just head over to Myth and ask for one, for she will have it stashed somewhere on her person.  ————————————————-——

We have a new citizen in Mount Phoenix:
                                         Tsukiyomi, the God of the Moon,                                            whose origins stem from Ancient Japan.                                             He is now a full-time employee at Yue.
FC NAME/GROUP:  Jin Akanishi GOD NAME: Tsukiyomi PANTHEON: Japanese OCCUPATION: Yue, Japanese Tea Garden | Full-time Staff HEIGHT: 5’11, 180cm WEIGHT: 185lbs, 83.9kg DEFINING FEATURES: Long hair that gently flows. While he does carry a handsome face its the everpresent strong and determined expression that really sets him apart.
PERSONALITY: He can be subtle in his movements but rash and impulsive in his interactions, and decisions. He is a traditional conservative, unable to see things from perspectives that differ from his own. Despite his long life, he lacks wisdom in the way he sees the world and manages relationships. He has a code of “honor” that is skewed to his beliefs that lead him to believe in unjust vengeance and the disdain of people who do not align with his sense of normality.
In reaction to recent events, he begins to be more tolerable, and curious as he transitions into life on Mount Phoenix.
HISTORY: Tsukiyomi became the ruler of the moon while his sister Amaterasu became the ruler of the sun, both sharing the heavens. This junction of gods ended as Tsukiyomi repaid Uke Mochi, who made a great feast, with violence as her methods did not align with his idea of decency. This lead to the separation of the siblings and thus the heavenly bodies in the sky.    
Tsukiyomi lived a solitary life before Mount Phoenix, with the death on his hands and being separated from the people that mattered as a result. He travels as if he is chasing after something but never reaching his moon being forced from each other leaving him tortured of the feeling of satisfaction escaping him. Even with the consequences of his actions that one dreadful day his attitude and aptitude for violence remain. This does not mean his separation from his sister sat well with him while he has not changed his ways it still festers in his mind.
In the places where he makes stops they become alive with a story or two of a man in the night causing violence and mayhem in the underbelly of society. He is known for creating problems for more than the depraved criminals but the civilians as well due to Tsukiyomi in a typical fashion not considering the consequences of his actions.
One day it became too much information circulating due to the age of technology fearing of being exposed he discovered Mount Phoenix and using his powers to see he also knew those who resided there. Knowing fate it brought this place to his attention in the hope of finding some sort of peace to calm and validate his ways.
POWERS:
Lunakinetic Combat
Can use the lunar energies to assist him in combat. Basic energy manipulation into shapes and crude blasts.
He has a blade without an edge that he uses as a club but an edge can be formed and sharpened at night. It can be at its sharpest in direct moonlight. (The blade is wakizashi length but can be extended using moon energy. It is usually extended to katana length or Nodachi length.)
Direct moonlight contact enhances his capabilities to peak efficiency (including intelligence however this does not give him wisdom in his application. His brash personality is still in effect.) Physical attributes include the senses, movement, strength, and durability.
Night Vision
Has the ability to cloak in direct contact in moonlight (Only under the light of the moon)
He can see through the moon. Anywhere the moon can be seen he can also see.
STRENGTHS:
He is deceptively subtle and can notice things people usually keep in the dark.
Follows his instincts so he acts quicker than most. He doesn’t hesitate to confront people.
He is committed and determined and not easily swayed to beliefs that counter his own.
He recognizes his faults. Very self aware but his weaknesses still apply.
WEAKNESSES:
Distorted morals while generally “noble” are only so within his eyes. He is very arrogant in his definition of noble as he protects his own definition of normal those who deviate even in a harmless way is met with disdain, or in the case of Uke Mochi violence.
Impulsive, He easily makes decisions without thinking of the consequences(swift without caution). Doesn’t hesitate to escalate a situation
Blunt, He has trouble articulating during verbal conflicts involving a difference in philosophical opinion. He is unable to articulate himself without seeming dismissive. (lacks wisdom in scenarios of discourse). This leads to him being impulsive.
While being self aware of his faults his will to change is drastically weaker.
So stubborn at times even in the face of defeat, this can be a physical defeat or intellectually (kinda cute)

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Needs A God
No multiplayer game gets to live in a void for long. No matter how hard you may try to bleed yourself of troublesome concepts like context, or backstory, the reality is that people like to speculate. People like to tell stories. Doesn’t matter how goofy or outlandish; the creeping tendrils of narrative eventually wrap around the foundations of even the purest, most context-free experiences. Why are we bombing these crates? Why are we stealing that flag? Why are we fighting? Why are we here?
Somebody will come up with an answer. It’s the human thing to do.

But for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, it feels like that answer has yet to come. One hundred players parachute onto a deserted island, where the average density of firearms per square meter exceeds even the most deranged fanatical NRA wet dream, and a slowly constricting hemisphere of crackling blue energy forces them to mercilessly gun each other down until only one is left standing. It’s an absurd, nightmarish premise; a theoretical scenario seemingly engineered to turn people into rabid beasts, fighting tooth and nail merely for the privilege of living a few minutes longer. Who would orchestrate such a competition, and for what purpose? Is it an experiment? A ritual? A blood sport? Is some Silicon Valley bazillionaire sitting in a darkened room somewhere, surrounded by monitors, cranking his sad rubbery hog to every rifle crack and arterial splatter? Nobody seems to know, or care.
Ordinarily, I wouldn’t either; PUBG is fun enough without framing. And yet, tonight’s winds bring an uneasy chill, carrying whispers of restlessness, indignance and fury. You feel it, don’t you? There’s a philosophical schism in how we approach Pubguh—the very concept of ‘battle royale’, even—and the hairline fractures are beginning to show. Players whine and gnash their teeth at the red zone, esports organisers desperately attempt to harness the format for views, and the proverbial chicken dinner seems to attain a more and more mythical, trophy-like status by the day; a reference to back-alley gambling now ironically viewed as a badge of ultimate prowess. This isn’t a healthy relationship. This isn’t a healthy attitude.

What Plunkbat needs, friends, is a god.
Well, okay, not necessarily a god god. Divine power is optional. I’m not asking Brendan Greene to start wearing a white toga and chiselling his patch notes into stone tablets, as much as it would set an entertaining precedent. The job requirements are flexible: I’m simply asking for someone vengeful and capricious, with unfathomable intentions, inscrutable thoughts, and—at least within the bounds of the playable space—immense, unassailable power. Like any god, you need not supply scientific proof of their presence; you merely have to attribute sufficient existing phenomena to them, and change people’s collective perception of the world. Ooh, got’em.
See, battle royale games represent an important shift to me. I’m a competitive person by nature. It’s etched into my mind, irreversibly chiseled by years of test scores and parental praise and all the other ego-stroking bullshit that you were subjected to if you were a certain kind of ‘gifted’ child. “You’re the best. You should be the best. You should be winning. Why aren’t you winning, what the heck is wrong with you?” So it bleeds over, into hobbies, work, and of course, online shooters, in which I regularly demonstrate that I have an innate… whatever the opposite of aptitude is. I react slowly, I zone out, I bean myself on the head with my own grenades, and if you exert the slightest bit of pressure, I’ll empty half the magazine into a wall and drop my weapon through a gap in the floorboards. I’m not good, and yet some unreachable, fundamental part of my conscious will never be satisfied with that knowledge.

You would think, then, that Pubby-G would only serve to exacerbate this mindset. And yet, in a world of delicately tuned esports that are built from the ground up to be pure, unfiltered tests of skill, it feels like the only game to grant a genuine absolution of responsibility; a kind of freeing fatalism. There’s a sense in a lot of classic multiplayer experiences—like, say, Counter-Strike—that every outcome is more or less deterministic; a product of a series of controlled variables and actions. With every failure comes the overwhelming impression that it could have been averted, given enough competence, foresight, and concentrated guarana. By contrast, a porridgey cocktail of chaos flows through the veins of battle royales, surrounding you with factors that are not only impossible to influence, but—in many cases—impossible to know at all. You are swept up by the gusts of a hundred butterflies’ wings, tossed to and fro by the whims of the random number generator, bombarded with unavoidable risks and squeezed into unmanageable situations. It’s easier to go with the flow, accept that at any given moment you may have your head unceremoniously taken off—by somebody lying flat on a distant hill, or hiding behind one of the game’s ten thousand trees, or concealed in a shrub on the far side of the Moon—and concentrate on all the minute actions you can make to ever-so-slightly nudge the odds in your favour.
But it’s not always clear that this is the reality of Puhburger. With its vast scale and often languid pacing, encounters can feel like isolated incidents, detached from the cascading series of events that led up to them, despite being anything but. Anyone can parse the map for circles of safety and non-safety, and understand that their arbitrary placement gives certain players an advantage; it’s less apparent that the figure in that upstairs window might have had their sights trained on the area, or seen you first, shot first, picked up a better weapon, obtained a better vantage point, or some other action, because of a dizzying permutation of astral alignments that neither of you could even begin to grasp. So we get futile attempts to establish a level playing field, find meaning in accomplishment, divine fair elements from unfair, and generally make things needlessly stressful for everybody involved. Except the infuriatingly smug yours truly, of course.

How do you make that clear, though? How do you concisely impress upon people that their fate is almost entirely out of their hands, in such a way that they adopt an attitude of acceptance? Blaming the roll of the dice doesn’t come to mind as swiftly when you never see them rattling around, nor the way their innumerable ripples propagate across the map. Furthermore, as current events have taught us all too well, it’s a lot easier to ascribe fault to individuals than to an invisible, fundamentally hostile system. So what do you do?
You give the system a name. And, if you can, a face.
Allow me to momentarily slam us into reverse. When Valve released Left 4 Dead way back in 2008 (oh god, it’s going to be ten years old this year?) they made quite a song and dance about the game’s AI Director; an invisible, unknowable entity that would dynamically dole out items and zombies in a manner consistent with the tenets of dramatic tension, ensuring players were subjected to a “fast-paced, but not overwhelming, Hollywood horror movie”. While the opacity of the AI Director’s machinations always made me a tad sceptical of its mechanical effectiveness, giving people a name to pin the blame for all their earthly woes on was a masterstroke. Notorious video game jokesman Yahtzee Croshaw—the one with the hat and that trendy 00s cynicism, remember?—reported that he once witnessed someone praying to the AI Director, and I bet you all the pipe bombs in the world that players’ personification of it didn’t stop there. Short of making a catastrophic error, I never saw anyone get chewed out for not pulling their weight, and when tones got heated—as they inevitably do, when you’re throwing yourself against the frigid slopes of the higher difficulties—they were directed in the vague direction of the director: for its expectations, for its lack of pity, for being unfair. Awareness of our lurking orchestrator changed our perception of the experience, even though we couldn’t entirely prove it wasn’t just somebody sitting in a black box, disinterestedly flipping a coin over and over.

So, why not do the same for a game that does? Put a face on the system that holds a fundamental grip on who lives and who dies. You don’t need to change a thing under the hood; you need only introduce the vague implication that the evolving state of the battlefield is a consequence of a thinking, feeling, mysterious overseer. A bloodthirsty oligarch watching from their lavish observation zeppelin, a dystopian TV network broadcasting a deadly future sport, an amoral team of government agents sealed away in a bunker control room, an inexplicably sapient Shiba playing with a selection of levers, or indeed, a literal deity. People will take the faintest contextual cues and run amok with them, ascribing everything they can to the will of the one who set this conflict in motion: item drops, circle position, all the way down to the subtle spread of their bullets as they sail through the air. Yeah, maybe it’ll start off as a running joke; an ironic indulgence, the “thanks Obama” of Puddlebounds. But that’s the thing about ironic behaviour: get enough people doing it at once, and you’ll cultivate sincere participants without even realising it. We will learn to absolve ourselves of responsibility, and engage in the unhinged pandemonium of battle royale with the mentality that befits it.
There’s just one problem: you need to be able to keep a secret.

Drawing will always be in my life, albeit in a smaller role. But this piece isn’t about drawing or art -- it’s about waking up and realising you’ve been wrong about something (or someone), even when it seemed, for all intents and purposes, so right. ‘Nothing. I’m all right.’
And indeed, I am all right too. Why? Because last Monday, on the 6th of July 2015, at around lunch time -- I quit art.*
There are many reasons for this and they have recently become impossible to ignore. The main one being:
“I’m just not that into you.”
Imagine your whole life you’ve been told you are straight. You acted straight, felt ‘straight enough’ and had heterosexual relationships. Sometimes you even quite liked it. Then one fine day, clear as a bell, the fantastical insight, quite without warning, alights upon your head: you’re gay.
That’s what I feel like now. I don’t know that I’m gay, but I know I’m not straight.
*Well, quit the pursuit of art as a career fine artist in the conventional sense. There are other ways of ‘being artistic’.
It was truly a lightbulb moment, just like in the movies. ‘Ah! This weight I’ve been carrying around -- I don’t have to! It was self-imposed, a chore all along. Bubbling under the surface always was I do not want to be a fine artist. I do not want to be an artist. I don’t feel like an artist. I mustn’t be an artist… These people are artists. Am I like them? In my life thus far, great things have happened when I’ve ‘let go’, when I’ve stopped trying feverishly to attain something -- particularly goals I’ve set myself. I thought that was the way to achieve things -- set goals. What I didn’t know was how powerfully something could take possession of me from the outside, without me controlling it.
Over the years I’d managed to find a peace and inspiration in visual art like a gay man can in a relationship with a woman. A disquieting pebble in my shoe whose persistent rubbing I’d gotten used to. Pride was resident in the boast “I’ve been at this for 28 years!” How can I ignore a thing with such pedigree? But The Thing isn’t about time spent; it isn’t quantitative. Say I have spent my entire life in bad habits -- is that an excuse to continue them? If I flatten a tyre do I get out and flatten the other three?
Doing art is boring. For me. Sitting in a room all day and into the night -- even if accompanied by a functional heater and Wagner -- sinking deeper into a miasma of pointless and circular introspection about my life and how it’s going, the validity of what I’m doing and my relationships with others as I laboriously render a 5cm square of paper -- let me tell you now dear reader -- the answer is a foaming, blazing, sparks-flying-out-of-my-ass No.
Yes, I draw very well. I can copy things I see because I can judge relative size and position of shapes, and relative colours and their intensities. I can draw steady lines 1/8th of a millimetre thick or less because I have SHARP PENCILS, a STEADY HAND and FINE FINE MOTOR SKILLS.
I’m an excellent copyist. I can imitate anything -- painting styles, real-life objects, your signature, your accent, your walk, even your voice. Copying has a certain thrill, for sure. “Yep, I can do that too.” A fleeting and superficial pride attends these feats. Then come the cheap requests: “Can you draw a photorealistic drawing of my dog/my girlfriend/my parents/my face?” “No.” “I’ll even pay you!” (Gee, how nice!) “No.” People ask me would I like to be an artist full-time. No! That would be horrible. Or just boring, which is a soft kind of horrible, but horrible all the same. It would be like being an invalid, or under house-arrest. No.
Aptitude is a mysterious thing. I have good taste, a fairly broad range of interests and I am curious. I like colourful and shiny things because I am human and geared to like these things. But all these, even combined with technical ability, are not sufficient. I always recall what my illustration teacher said to me when I was 14: ‘Your technical ability is at Year 12 level. Now all you need is something to say.’
Art doesn’t make sense to me and perhaps that’s what held me in its thrall -- I’m drawn to things I don’t understand because they’re a challenge. But the fact that there are no answers at the end, nothing to discover -- frustrates and depresses me. It leaves me cold. What’s the point of playing a game if there’s no consensus on what constitutes winning? It is still true that I’m drawn to things I don’t understand. However, I now disagree that there is “nothing to discover” in art. On the contrary -- it is indistinct enough to include almost any interpretation. Instead, perhaps it is its lack of precision that frustrates me -- I find writing is much better at nailing concepts. Art’s openness is hence both its strength and weakness. I was enamoured of science at the time of writing this piece; confirmation bias was certainly at work.
To Feynman, philosophy was stupid. To me, art is stupid. This is uncharitable and myopic, but in a certain sense I do believe it. Art is ‘dumb philosophy’, and philosophy is ‘dumb science.’ I’m not the first person to advance this idea. Amazingly, the hierarchy has for me flipped: at the bottom is science, which is just a procedure; then philosophy, which grapples with concepts; then art is at the top. Art’s preeminence is due to the fact that it doesn’t try to be philosophy (contra Danto; if art tries to be philosophy, it’s just philosophy). Art is its own project; it doesn’t give a fuck about anything else.
I refuse to spend my life troubling my head over something I feel obliged to do mostly because other people think I should. Did I ever stop to consider my true feelings on the matter? Curiously, no.
A trip to Europe or an art show that appeals to me usually engenders a furious period of inspired production. I want to ‘do’ the buildings and spaces that I saw -- capture them, own them, possess them. But this is the consumer’s passion, the gatherer's, not the artist’s. And I do them because I can. I don’t care about innovating in art; I just like making pretty things that soothe my eyes. I'm a jeweller; a confectioner; a traditionalist. An enthusiastic cake-decorator, a polisher and tinkerer. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve attended exhibitions in the past several years, and when I do it’s often only because a friend wants to. I am not part of any artistic community, and I hardly ever buy art books (certainly no instructional ones). Art theory I don’t mind, and generally my choices are non-fiction -- philosophy or science. Perhaps I think art can tell me nothing that I don’t already know or feel; or at least that there are other disciplines and activities far more qualified to do those things.
I spent my entire design degree trying to figure out what design was. What is this thing? Why is it? How does it fit in the disciplinary landscape? How is it possible to judge designs when the assessment criteria is so unclear? Perplexing things are like this -- they make sense to other people. My classmates seemed to melt so easily into what needed to be done. I also felt different because of the importance they placed on personal style -- I was always merely practical and thought such effort misdirected. So while they got off on paper stocks, central alignment and thick-rimmed glasses, my head spun from the Boudrillard, Barthes and Žižek that eventually led me to academic philosophy.
Little signs along the way hinted at it -- an early and enduring love of vehicles and machines, a lack of respect for the ‘anything goes’ attitude in high school studio arts, confusion in my first degree, an impatience with teaching art and much of my cohort, a frustration with the general character of my peers in experimental art and music circles, a persistent fascination with science, taking a job in dentistry, the conspicuous lack of artists among my closest friends and a preponderance of scientists, software engineers and psychologists. There aren’t even any architects among my close friends. Most conversations with 'artists' remind me of Zappa's recordings of stoned hippies talking gibberish on Lumpy Gravy.
And the boredom. Oh the boredom. Only retrospectively do I realise how deep my boredom was, and all the troublesome and potentially damaging things I did to try and alleviate or ignore it. In Hungarian there is a perfect saying -- pihent agyu -- meaning those whose minds are ‘overly rested’, which translates roughly to ‘idle hands are the devil’s plaything.’ Boredom, pride, lack of courage to assert my true inclinations and desires -- such deadly sins muddied my time.
This is one of the most significant realisations of my life, and it has taken me this obscenely long to acknowledge it in full. One can set out so obviously in a particular direction, for so long, and for all intents and purposes look set for success in it. Everything can seem perfect: the tables are laid and the ribbons hung, the champagne poured. But patterns and intuition must be heeded -- the tiny, persistent voice that tickles closest to my heart -- even if it means the whole party must be packed up. The truth is often uncomfortable, but it's true.
One needs to truly love the thing one sacrifices for -- it has to fill the spirit in a way almost nothing else can. It’s a compulsion so strong and lasting that all else is employed in its service. Then it is worth it. It has to be what one wakes up for, the thing that is so thrilling that spare moments are spent on it and one’s person is filled with an almost embarrassingly unguarded glee when the loved thing is spoken of. Did I have these for art? No. It was more that odious thing that I owe to friends and family who are so impressed by my abilities and, in the case of parents, facilitated them.
I feel empowered; awoken. I’m taking up the oars and steering across the lake, headed for the unknown. It’s been easy to be passive, letting myself be tossed this way and that by the currents of outside opinion and counsel. It’s been easy to retreat from hard work out of fear and laziness. But these will no longer do.
I wash my hands of you, flickering cave pictures. I place you in a little boat laden with flowers and candles and push you out into the blue. May you be pampered and stroked and coddled by those you truly thrill.
May this be a lesson to any person trapped in the visions -- however convincing -- that others have concocted for them.
May this be a lesson about the perils of lacking the courage to face the uncomfortable, the surprising, or the merely inconvenient, truth. © Diana Szabo 2015-18.

A good friend of mine has jumped into the amazing world of rescue recently; literally living one of my dreams and I am so proud of her for taking the leap.  Within only a month or so she has changed the outlook for two very special equines.  With proper nutrition and care they have been restored to good health and are now ready for work and eventual placement in new homes.
At the moment my living situation doesn’t allow for horses at home.  I board my one and that’s all I can afford.  Someday I will own property and rescue one or two horses of my own.  Until then I have been given the opportunity to work with these sweet creatures.  Meet Nash (red dun) and Phoenix (Palomino)!
Since the boys have regained some weight and were cleared by vets we are able to begin working with them to build their top-line, athleticism, and most importantly their confidence.  Although we have a very good trainer involved my friend has enlisted my help as another hand in the process (the three of us are busy women!).  I’m excited because I get the opportunity to see new horse personalities and tackle new challenges.  I use the Clinton Anderson fundamentals series for groundwork to build respect and confidence.
Phoenix doesn’t know personal boundaries.  He prefers to get too close and doesn’t realize he’s not a lapdog.  Here I am asking him to stand quietly and give me space.
My first day working with Phoenix went well. He demonstrated his intelligence immediately.  In our first session together we took it slow to get to know one another.  I began by desensitizing him to my lead line and then to the stick and string.  Once he was comfortable I yielded his hindquarters.  He caught on incredibly quick and even over-achieved…he just kept moving!  Finally we got to a point where he realized it’s okay to stop when I ask for it.  We also lunged in both directions, and learned some back-up methods.  Backing up was a little challenging for him.  He was confused and quickly got frustrated.  He reared twice, and although it made me nervous at first my mind went directly to Clinton’s training videos.  I kept my cool and proceeded.  In only minutes he figured out what I was asking of him so I ended our session on a good note.  I finished his lesson with neck flexion and found that he had a stiff neck.  Using massage and myofascial release I worked on releasing some tension from his head and poll.  The expressions on this horse blow me away! Phoenix melted in my hands almost instantly.
A week later I revisited Phoenix for more training.  It had been a whole week so I was astounded when I saw that he had retained everything from the week  before.  He flexed his neck more easily.  He lunged more calmly.  He stood still when I rubbed him to a stop with the handy stick.  I spanked the ground with the stick and string and Phoenix relaxed, licking, chewing and taking nice deep breaths.  I was even able to helicopter the string over his head and around his body without raising any concern from him!  When we backed up he did so immediately and willingly.  From there we began to learn yielding the forehand, sending, and circle driving.  I’m so pleased with his aptitude and attitude.
Nash isn’t too sure about the stick and string.  Eventually he began to relax and allow me to spank the ground with decent intensity.  He seems to be guarded and I’m hoping soon we’ll break through those barriers, earning his trust and seeing his personality.
I also began working with Nash who is a little more hesitant and shy.  I haven’t spent as much time with him and realized he may need more prioritization.  Most of our first lesson consisted of desensitizing.  He flinched every time I swung the lead line lightly at him.  To help his confidence I made a big deal out of his successes; I want him to know he’s doing a good job.  It breaks my heart to think of who might have made him this way.
We also yielded the hindquarters, lunged, and back up a bit.  He learns slower than Phoenix but does eventually figure it out.  His movement suggests a history of western riding.  He carries his head low has a beautiful long trot/jog and a big low canter/lope.
Nash is still quite shy and doesn’t want to be caught.  I also suspect he’s a stoic type.  He hides his expressions more than his pasture-mate. In time he will realize that work doesn’t always have to be tedious or torture.  This will take time and patience which we have.  During our first session we took a lot of breaks so he could graze and we finished his session with some soaked alfalfa.
I’m not a professional and there are many others more skilled than I am; I have no issues with admitting that.  Despite me making some mistakes both Nash and Phoenix have still forgiven me; and they have improved significantly in only 2-3 sessions.  I can’t wait to see what else they have to offer!
How fortunate I am that I’ve been given the opportunity to take part in the rehabilitation of these boys.  Nobody knows their history, but thanks to my friend they have been saved from a short future destined toward slaughter.   I look at my own horse and wonder what can make somebody condemn their loyal companion.  Selling is one thing, but slaughter? I have almost given up on Blade, almost sent him back to his original home…but I couldn’t do it.    He wasn’t from a bad situation, but even on his bad days and even as he gets more un-ridable I have vowed to be his person.  The person who stands by him and supports him until his last breath.  It’s a commitment, it can be a sacrifice, but it’s one I’ve chosen to make.

Applications 
Application forms are used to collect all of the relevant demographic, occupational and biographical data needed to be able to select employees fit for the job. A standard application form may ask for personal details, employment records, educational records, any skills or employment training and referees. Weighted application form is a standard application form but certain aspects of the form have been ‘pre-scored’. This means that certain areas of section carry more weight in the application. Scores depending on the weighting could be used to determine which applicants could go through next selection stage.
+Fairer, as decision are not biased according to factors like race and gender.
+Research has found WAFs to be effective
-Reductionist as it does not represent the complexity of a job
-Ethnocentric as the language used in the application maybe culturally biased
-People tend to improve a they have more experience with psychometric tests
Curriculum vitae is a biographical inventories. It contains a brief overview of the applicant’s biographical and employment history
Selection interviews
Structured interview: each applicant gets the same questions
Unstructured interview: interviewer doesn't ask the same questions. Ask follow up questions depending on what is discussed during the interview
Semi-structured: some predetermined questions but the interviewer may also ask other questions depending on the conversation e.g. wants more detail or finds something interesting.
Advice to interviewers (Riggio, 1990)
     Structured formal Interviews
     Make sure interview questions are job related
          could be situational questions about the job e.g. “what would you do if a customer complained?”
     Ensure there is an objective rating score for each answer
          there should be criteria for what is a good and poor answer
     Use trained interviewers
     Use a panel of interviewers rather than just one
     Use the interview time efficiently
     Avoid asking questions about what has already been given on the application form.
*Campion, Pursell and Brown (1988) reported that an interview process employing many of the above features produced high reliability and good prediction of future job performance.
Problems with selection interviews 
Awosunle & Doyle 2001-- On the basis of only hearing a voice, white people judge a person to be more favorable for a job when the accent is from a white person and a black person judge a black voice more favorably. ( lab experiment, 3 audio tapes, independent design, individual differences)
Graves & Powel (1996) -- Female interviewers rate female candidates more favorably than males, however male interviewers did not show this bias. (Analysis of data from 680 campus interviews provides partial support for this hypothesis. High and low population validity)
Use of psychometric tests
Ability can be tested using IQ test like questions, which measure e.g. memory, spatial awareness, logic … etc
Self-Reports can be used to measure factors such as motivation and personality.
Ability test measure what a person can do. They are sometimes known as attainment or achievement tests, thus putting the emphasis on what you have already achieved.
Aptitude tests are aimed at assessing what you are potentially capable of. *aptitude is innate and ability refers more to what a person has learned to do (Kline, 1993)
Personality test (Myers-Briggs test) measures of personality and motivation. Personality scales attempt to measure how a person generally is and behaves, their typical approach to life, people, events. Common personality traits or types measured by tests include: anxiety, aggression, extroversion, introversion, self-esteem, dependency, leadership style and a whole range of attitudes.

Decision-making
Multiple aggression mode takes scores from a variety of tests or interviews that the applicants have completed and combines them into one final score. Various predictors of potential job performance are ‘added together’ to generate a final score. A hight final score means that candidate correlates well with job on offer. Beforehand, different criteria can be ‘weighted’ based on previous appointments
+Gives a more rounded overview of a candidate. For example, a lack of previous experience of a similar job can easily be compensated for by a strong skill needed for the job
-If a score is very low on one criterion it could prevent a person being employed who scored well on other criteria that are also relevant to the job
Multiple cutoff model is when there are still many different predictors of the job that the applicants are trying to obtain, but there is a minimum score set for each of the predictors or tasks. As soon as an applicant fails to reach the minimum score on any one predictor or task the individual is eliminated from the recruitment process. Therefore, those who remain have at least the minimum amount of ability required for the position.
+Ensures that all eligible applicants have the minimum amount of ability across the different criteria for the job
-Some of the cut off points might be subjective and discriminate against certain applicants unfairly
Multiple hurdle model is when there is an ordered sequence of tasks that an applicant has to go through. At each stage (called a “hurdle” here), there is a decision whether the applicant has passed or failed. If applicants pass they continue with the next task but if they fail then they have "fallen at that hurdle” and they are eliminated from the process. The applicant who is left after the final hurdle is given the job
+Elimination of candidates early on in the process who are unqualified- this means fewer resources are wasted on unsuitable applicants

Biases in selection decisions
Stereotyping- Hayward (1996)  noted that females can still be stereotyped as “not management material” and are therefore overlooked as they do not have the “masculine traits” needed to take on such roles. Therefore, many female applicants may never be called for interview.
Previous similar candidates- for example, Hayward also notes that some interviewers may see applicants as being “similar” to other workers (this may be positive or negative) and therefore make instant judgments based on this rather than the applicants themselves
Decision-making models- there could be bias introduced when weighting the tasks or setting the standard for the multiple cutoff and multiple hurdles methods,
Subjectivity in interviews- Riggio notes that there will always be people questioning the accuracy of interviews. This is because a lot of information is qualitative rather than quantitative and therefore subject to interviewer interpretation bias.
Job descriptions and specifications
Details that are directly relevant to the job- organizations can list personal preferences in terms of the characteristics of the “ideal candidate” for the job.
Essential aspects are those that applicants must have
Desirable aspects are those that applicants may have and if they do it will make their application stronger.
Job analysis techniquesJob Analysis techniques study of the role, responsibility, duties and value of a job. We can think of them in terms of KSA. They are used to develop job descriptions.
Functional Job Analysis (FJA) is a reference guide to over 40,000  job titles. It has general descriptions of theses jobs as a starting point for personnel staff to tailor them to a specific job. The dictionary of occupational titles classifies all the jobs using a nine-digit code which represents the sector of work, type of work and how much interaction with people needed in that job.
Positional Analysis Questionnaire (PAQ) is a structured questionnaire that can be used to analyze a job in terms of 187 “elements” that are split into six different categories:

relationships with others

other requirements

Training and development- identification of each employee’s future training needs. This is another motivation factor for the employee as they have their needs recognized and can strive after better positions.
Techniques
Objective performance criteria
- these are aspects of the job that can be quantified and measured objectively. They could include number of sales, number of days off sick, etc.
Subjective performance criteria
- these are aspects of the job that cannot be accurately measured quantitatively. These include elements such as how manager feels workers have been progressing in their job or asking workers how happy they are in their current role.
360-degree feedback
-information about the worker is gathered from managers, peers, customers etc. to get an overall feel of the worker.
Behavior observation scale (BOS)
- scale used measure the frequency of preferred and possibly unwanted events/behaviors over a specified period of time. 1=never 2=seldom 3=sometimes 4=generally 5=always
Rankings
- a manager can rank his employees on different criteria and then compare the individual to other workers who have a similar or the same job to see how well the person is progressing.
Problems
Poor appraisals may be considered unreliable and subjective in assessment.
Appraisals may be stressful for the employee.
Riggio suggests that when the employee knows they are being watched their work is less creative and they take fewer risks.
Overt appraisal techniques such as Job Samples can be considered to be unnatural (demand characteristics) as the employee knows they are being monitored.
Covert observations e.g ask another employee, camera, listening to phone conversations, of the employee might be considered unethical as they have not been informed.
Solutions
360 degree appraisals involve having assessments made by many people e.g. managers, customers, colleagues. This has the potential to increase the reliability of the appraisal.
Objective Measurements can be used for example number of sales or test results of pupils.
Covert Surveillance can be used so the appraisal is not effected by demand characteristics and be natural e.g. monitoring phone calls
