Wish more adaptations would take the route like Mike Flannigan works or House MD or Hannibal. "Based on" in the sense of taking inspiration from source material and playing with them like dolls and saying something unique and creative with it outside of the material while maintaining key dynamics and themes that make it recognizable to the source.
Really sick of "faithful" adaptations that mean all the aesthetics and names and plots but told in such a soulless themeless mess. Did you think because the source already taught the lessons you don't need to say anything this time, you can just copy-paste?
The equivalent of cutting up the source to make a collage versus bringing it back from the dead wrong.

Shinomori is cute. Here's a post.
He is so baby-faced. He hasn't changed at all since he was 22, to when he died of "old age" at 40
(Old age? With a face like that? 40 years old?? Gimme that kind of youth and hotness Shinomori-)
He has tiny eyebrows. Like a puppy's (rottweiler's, for example). So cute and tiny and fuffy
He naturally frowns. Look at him and his mouth and his lil nose
He has a thing about keeping his arms near his chest. He sits with his arms crossed, introduces himself with his hands over his torso, and even walks with his arms crossed toward Midoriya
He has such clear skin for someone who lived the rest of his life in a forest??? Why do Hikage and Yoichi have such nice skin despite living in terrible environments? (forest and vault + abandoned streets respectively)
Is easily scared
They knew their Quirks could be used, but Shinomori got scared of it when it happened. Even though he gave Midoriya his support and access to his Quirk beforehand. Depending on the translation; "it startled me", "you scared me", "it surprised me"
I'm not going to hold running from AFO against him because he knew he was running for his life. Who wouldn't run for their life when it's in danger? Shinomori was being chased by the strongest person in the country (and likely the world)
His sense of self-preservation is probably heightened by the nature of his Quirk to keep him out of danger too. Which makes him all the more sensitive and jumpy to danger and anything that startles him, especially when he has no warning
He's actually extremely tall, but is so socially inept and jumpy it's adorable. He's taller than Bruce.
Bruce is as tall as a vault door that the 2m AFO used.
(Meanwhile Kudo is down there-)
He has such a bad sense of humor that it's cute (his puns off Danger Sense)
It's also adorable how Shinomori just doesn't understand social conventions sometimes. He lived in a forest, so it made sense, but also— Midoriya shows up in the void to the vestige platform for the first time. He has no mouth, no clothes—and Shinomori's first idea is to stand in front of him menacingly and go: "I shall explain. I am Shinomori Hikage." SIRRRR
This.
His Ability is basically like glorified anxiety. What if something is coming to hurt him? If something can hurt him? What if that tree falls while he's under it? And the ideas come so hard they hurt (although yes, it does detect ill intent and that's what sets it off)
He talks weirdly. Formal? Old-fashioned? Listening to him speak Japanese compared to others, it just sounds a bit different. (Translated subs don't show it very well, it's the voice itself methinks)
"This too, is destiny." *about Midoriya having OFA*
Kinda wise or sage-y. He did spend his life in solitude in the forests so he definitely spent a lot of time with his own thoughts. Maybe he found the meaning of life in a centipede or something one day
For someone so cute, he is also such. A fine. Specimen???
Look at those back muscles, dang.
LOOK AT HIS CALVES AND ARMS DANG.

“There’s a kind of time travel in letters, isn’t there? I imagine you laughing at my small joke; I imagine you groaning; I imagine you throwing my words away. Do I have you still? Do I address empty air and the flies that will eat this carcass? You could leave me for five years, you could return never—and I have to write the rest of this not knowing.”

My favourite films that I watched in 2023
Stole @cadmium-free's movie poster post format but then spent a week being perfectionist about my Wojits:
The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love (1995) - 1st January
"This movie was basically half Dykes To Watch Out For, right down to the Stonewall Was A Riot note on the fridge door."
Of An Age (2023) - 15 February
"Hilarious and devastating, together at last. This was the 34th film I've seen this year but I think the first to leave me Entirely Sobbing at the end. It was everything I needed." Idk where their legs are going don't ask me.
Parting Glances (1986) - 1 March
"A nice time capsuley bit of historically significant queer film history maybe, but it is actually extremely fun, very funny, beautiful and emotional, with incredible performances and a superb soundtrack to boot."
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - 30 March
"It honestly made me think of nothing so much as Speed Racer. Like, yes, extremely different films, but they they both thrive on an awkward blend of comedy and sincerity, they both masterfully drawn on a full range of film techniques, with no mind to what might be seen as cheesy or cheap, and they both take absolutely every opportunity to make every scene and transition Maximally Weird."
Yentl (1983) - 10 May
It was as trans as I expected, and twice as bisexual!! ... Every time she sung in voiceover it felt like she was severely dissociating.
Gol Maal (1979) - 13 May
"Absolutely wonderful screwball generational & class comedy." I watched this on a plane but turns out it slaps and is maybe something of a classic.
Ali: Fears Eats the Soul (1974) - 29 May
"The best All That Heaven Allows-like I've ever seen ... this film was utterly beautiful and heart-wrenching." Not my best work posterwise...
Duel to the Death (1983) - 14 July
"I didn't expect so many fight scenes with so many people, I didn't expect ninja and synths, I didn't expect amazing action alongside amazing comedy, I didn't expect wonderful and silly special effects"
Pontypool (2008) - 22 October
"Just the premise and conceit (both of which I knew in advance) would make a 5 star film but, unexpectedly, the execution is friggin' perfect too. I mean, I love a bottle episode." I couldn't draw the film poster so I drew the poster in the film.
All of Us Strangers (2023) - 15 December
"This film perhaps does better than any I've seen at presenting the weight of a (queer) personal history."

The way a large portion of the English FFXIV community infantilizes Alphinaud and Alisaie drives me up the wall, like I absolutely understand feeling protective of them, the story is intended to make you care about them, whether you interpret the WoL's bond with them as platonic, familial, romantic, professional, or parental, it's all fair game, yet the way some people talk about them, you'd think they were describing stupid toddlers.
They've graduated college. They drink alcohol. The first thing they do is leave home because they're legally of age and their dad can't stop them any more. Actual child characters refer to them as adults. The final expansion has them returning home after years away and saving the world where everyone that came before them fell short.
Alphinaud founds a private army and talks politics with world leaders, and everyone takes him seriously. He organizes international military actions. He negotiates trade deals with globe spanning businesses, he invents two new varieties of carbuncles just because he can. He solves a problem that has plagued the Forum for decades with a single phone call. He's potentially the smartest man alive and a skilled healer besides. There's a whole bit about how he likes mature women.
Alisaie pioneers the cure for Tempering, something everyone thought impossible for hundreds of years. She's one of the strongest mages in the world and a deft swordswoman to boot. She's practically adopted a war orphan. There's an entire short story dedicated to her mourning her dead girlfriend. When she speaks everyone shuts up and pays attention, even Zenos listens to her.
But because they're short, because Alphinaud bought a sword once, people will act like none of these things happened. People will unironically call them babies and act like the plot just moves itself, like they're tagalong kids that don't actually do anything and need grown ups to protect them. It's maddening.

an angry Foul Legacy honestly sounds horrifying if he's targeting a poor soul that messed with you (rip) but can you imagine even if he's slightly annoyed his hair just fluffes up a bit <3 pet pets his fluffier hair till he calms down a bit hehe
oh my moon and stars you are SO RIGHT :DDD
maybe someone from your workplace came to visit you for some tea or advice, which means that poor Childe has to stay upstairs and out of sight until they're gone :(( and in his opinion, they most certainly overstayed their welcome!! you gave them all the advice they needed, yet they still insisted on staying to chat more. it's not that Childe dislikes other people, just... he misses you :(( yes, you're downstairs, but he's upstairs and that means he's away from you and he doesn't like that!!! especially since when you come home from work, that's supposed to be HIS time with you so you can relax, but now this coworker is making you work outside of your normal hours, and he hates seeing you tired or overworked :((
so inevitably when you bid the person goodbye and go upstairs to see Childe, you find him sitting on your bed, arms crossed and hair and fur poofed up. you ask if he's alright and he simply grumbles, tugging you close and smushing his face against your shoulder as you begin to pat his now very fluffy hair. your gentle touch eases his irritation, and eventually his muscles loosen and his fur settles back down. you move your hand to his cheek so he can lean into your palm, happily purring, and with a sneaky smile you mention that you forgot to tell your coworker something and should probably go catch up with them
boom. fluff is poofed up again and Childe wraps his arms around your waist with an annoyed growl, unaware that you're holding back laughter as you hug him back and reassure him that you were joking, and you're not going anywhere tonight

A slow-burn Sun-Wukong X Reader fic idea has been stewing around in my head for a while. Without going into too much detail (to prevent this from being 10k+ words), here is the barebones idea:
Sun Wukong has to have a source of income somehow. He has a TV, Personal Lawyer, Video games, Purchases Snacks, etc. So, he (in disguised) gets a job. In being a Monkey King "expert" for hire for any company wanting to create accurate Great Sage Equal to Heaven products or media. In my opinion, it is very in-character.
Reader, who just got a job as Head Director and Writer at a Studio that specializes in Monkey King media (in-universe creators of Monkey Cop and the Monkey King Animated Series). They want to utilize this opportunity to skyrocket their career, which means making this show stand out amongst others.
Then they meet, because Totally-Not Sun Wukong heavily critics Reader's initial scripts and immediately gets on their bad side. They pretty much hate him, but can't do anything because he is the company hired expert. So they decide to be extremely petty, much to Wukong's amusement.
This is full blown One-Sided (on Reader's part) Enemies to Friends to Lovers. How the transition of Enemies to Friends is blurry, but what excites me most is the ideas I have for their Friendship and their Later Romance. It's very sappy and fluffy, Wukong gets all the forehead kisses and soft love that fills the heart till bursting. Its pre-cannon at first, but at some point I want it to dip into canon and eventually become canon-divergent (because I'm a sucker for alternate timelines, it lets you explore characters).
I really expect no one to see or comment on this, it's was not formatted to be in anyway coherent. Just wanted to get at least part of what has been living rent-free in my mind out into the Tumblr sphere.

Hi! Huge fan of your fics, kinda new to Tumblr. Do you ship any of the engines (if you don’t mind me asking?)
Hey, thanks for dropping a line!
I was a non-shipper for quite a while, then I started dabbling. I'm open to lots of different (and conflicting) ships but some of the ones that I'm most committed to are:
Thomas/Bertie
Edward/BoCo
Henry/Bear
Percy/Harold
Duck/Donald
Douglas/Toad/Oliver
Mavis/Salty
Also, if you trawl my archives long enough, you’ll see occasional references to Toby/Diesel and James/Porter. And you might wonder: Wait, are they f***in' serious? The official answer is that the former is just for a lark (specifically, for a dare)… but the latter I am indeed pretty serious about. ;)

rant time!
kpop reaction content isn't exactly new (at least as far as I know) but it does seem to have kind of boomed in the last... two-three years I think. I remember there being only a handful of relevant kpop reaction content creators on youtube, some more popular that the others, but still there weren't a ton of them around. and I guess it makes sense because kpop itself has gotten much more popular and widely known outside of just [REDACTED] and among a wider age range I'd say.
but nowadays if you look up “X group - Y title track reaction” you will find tens, if not hundreds of reaction videos (especially if its a well known group) ranging from channels with hundreds of thousand subs to small account with a couple of hundred views on their reaction videos. and I just find that so weird.
like... especially for channels that do reactions as their main (and only) content, I find it extremely difficult to believe that after a certain point there is any authenticity behind these reactions. these big reaction channels are out there reacting to damn near every relevant kpop group's comebacks (and there are a LOT of them) and every single reaction is generally positive and often very enthusiastic.
aside from the fact that logically and statistically it's impossible for someone to like every title track being released, even if they're all objectively good (which they're not), because no one likes every genre and every style of music, there is basically no creativity involved in creating this type of content which makes it very dull both for the creator and the consumer after a while.
on top of that, this type of content has created a really toxic environment around expressing opinions and criticism toward kpop groups and kpop music. I just came across a video from one of these bigger (while also being newer) creators talking about how she's not happy with the content she's been making for the past year. she said that it's extremely overwhelming trying to keep up with every comeback when everyone expects you to react to their fave's CB and after a while sitting and reacting to music videos becomes repetitive especially when you're not even allowed to truly be yourself and express your opinions. she said she can't even talk about having a bias in a group because she would get tons of hate comments and dms about ppl bashing her for not having a different bias. I can't imagine how people would react to a reaction video creator saying she doesn't like a comeback or even a certain element in the song/mv.
I used to love kpop reaction videos back when I had just discovered them and they were not as big. like I genuinely get the appeal. seeing someone who's not a teenage girl (which is what stereotypically the general public thinks kpop stans are) is pretty validating. and back then there were like 'vocal coach reacts' or 'producer reacts' etc. seeing the reaction of "experts" analyzing different parts of a song/mv was really interesting for someone like me with zero knowledge of any of the technical stuff. and I also understand that they do contribute to promoting groups and comebacks to a certain degree. but it has just gone too far, in my opinion.
idk maybe I’ve just gotten old and lost the will to enjoy the small things that used to bring me joy but I genuinely don't enjoy reaction videos anymore. most of those older 'exerpts' (except for two I think) aren't active anymore (I'm guessing at least to some degree bc stans didn't want to hear that their fave was not that legendary of a vocalist or their fave song wasn't as layered and complex as they thought it was) and instead there are just random people reacting to kpop and some of them you can just tell that all their reactions are completely faked out. Youtubers are jumping on this trend bc it’s easy (in terms of not having any kind of real substance) and gets u good views if you’re a little charming and funny.
TL;DR : everything is fake and authenticity is dead. kdjfdjf
I'm mostly joking but in the end, as per usual with my rants of this kind, I don't have a specific point or a solution. I'm just starting a conversation. so if any of you have something to add or just want to chat about this send me an ask!! (plz don't reply in the comments because I want this to be on my dash so everyone else can read too.)

I have little sympathy for people who use deaths as an excuse to be an asshole. I get it, it sucks. Get the fuck over it. Your grief is not an excuse to treat others like shit. What the fuck.

Do you have any zutara podfic recs? I’m all caught up on a tale of ice and smoke, and am in need of a fix
Ooh, I hope you've been enjoying Ice & Smoke! I cannot believe how close I am to posting the entirety of Book 1 at this point! (Which... I mean, it's still going to be several weeks, but considering the fact that it's been going for well over a year, THAT'S REALLY CLOSE!)
Soooooo... I was going to say that I feel really bad about how I've barely listened to any Zutara podfics that aren't my own, but it turns out that the Zutara podficcing community is like... really small 😅 Small as in, of the 53 total Zutara podfics on AO3, more than half (28 of them, to be exact) are mine. So on the bright side, I don't have to feel so bad about slacking when it comes to listening to other people's podfics. On the less-bright side, there's just not much selection out there.
Anyone who might have been thinking about getting into podficcing, go ahead and give it a shot! It's not going to make you fandom-famous or anything (which is arguably a good thing), but there's not a lot of competition for attention either!
As far as podfics by other people go, I'm at least aware of owedbetter's i'm still here and The Jasmine Dragon Tea Hour's adaptation of Tempest in a Teacup by akavertigo. I'm pretty sure both of those are dramatic adaptations with more than one voice actor, and I think JD Tea Hour did adaptations of a couple of other fics and has had another in the works for... a while. I don't see any other fics that I know well enough to recommend in the list of Zutara podfics, but I have read both i'm still here and Tempest in a Teacup, so I can at least say that I liked the stories, even if I never got around to the audio versions.
And then, since I kind of stumbled into becoming the Zutara fandom's most prolific creator for its least popular format, I might as well do a bit of self promo too:
Only by Starlight is the longest complete podfic I've posted so far - basically Book 3 Painted Lady/Zuko shenanigans with some angst and hurt/comfort
A Father's Pride
Told You So
Date
Caught
Awkward
The last five are all oneshots - check the summaries and tags to see if any of them sound interesting, I guess! I do have podfics out there for a BUNCH of other fics too, but... they were recorded before I owned a real microphone, and the sound quality from my computer's built-in mic is Not Great. I'm working on remakes of all of those fics, which will start coming out sometime after I finish posting the I&S Book 1 podfics, but the originals are still out there if you're willing to deal with some less-than-spectacular audio.
I'm also working on a podfic of Stolen Bending, and I'll be starting on I&S Book 2 within a couple of months, but those probably won't get posted until the fics themselves get to the 'light at the end of the tunnel' phase, so probably not worth marking your calendar for those ones yet.
And thanks for the ask, @amandayetagain! It's always so cool to hear that someone is listening to my podfics and enjoying them!
