Hi! i remember seeing some crowns in fictional media and was wondering if you knew the correct term? It looks like a kokoshnik/tiara with a string of beads connected at each side, looping underneath the jaw. I don't know how to link pictures, so here's one my friend showed me: Apple White's Dragon Games Crown. Thank you for your time!

I don't think there's a term for it or if there is I don't know it. The ones I've seen are strings of pearls that aren't really connected to the tiara, they are just necklaces that the person is wearing draped from their head.

Nancy Langhorne Astor, Viscountess Astor - 1917 - This is more of a costume for the photoshoot and not something she would have worn to a formal event.

Queen Marie of Romania - all between 1896 and 1924 - Most of these are costumes for photoshoots but as you can see in the bottom middle photo she also wore necklaces draped like this for regular gala events. Marie was a very theatrical dresser.

I think the style is meant to be vaguely historical but I don't know what time period they are trying to emulate.

VADTD cover analysis!

This stems from an analysis I did on the vadtd server (everyone is welcome to come and join us). Since there seem to be a few people who are confused about the order of covers or the seasons they represent, I decided to make a little analysis, (this is coming from someone who has almost all english physical copies of the manhwa). I shall fulfill my duty as self-proclaimed season speculator and covers analyst (•̀ᴗ•́)و

As of now we have 7 known covers, after Suol-nim made an announcement on twitter about how the 4th season will begin on the 30th of September, and with it came a picture of what might be the new season’s cover.

(To make the placement easier to understand, just look at it this way: the odd numbers are the main covers, whereas the even numbers are the filler covers, which was pointed out by @seirclys as well).

1. Let’s start from the very beginning with the first cover.

The first cover ever that we know of, where Penelope is by herself. We've seen this cover plenty of times. It’s the first season's start, and I'd also like to think that the fact that she is by herself is not only showing that she is the protagonist, but also her distance with everyone else.

We can see that there are various crystal hearts around Penelope and each represents one of the male leads.

Penelope is laying in a coffin, (most likely symbolizing the many in-game deaths), and surrounded by flowers, more specifically white lilies that we see in the novel illustration of Penelope.

She is wearing the dress which is said to be her favorite. It appears each time a panel of the actual game is shown. It seems to be her trademark dress.

Penelope is holding onto a dark red rose, which could represent how she chose Eckles as her escape out since his affection score rises easily; alternatively it could represent her.

2. The second one is not a season start cover, nor a main cover, it’s a physical copy cover because the first season was broken in multiple parts when published as physical.

On the cover we see Penelope and Emily; I think this shows how now Emily is firmly on Penelope's side and will continue to serve her from then on. The duchy in the background and Emily's presence could also be symbolizing how other servants as well are now recognizing Penelope as their superior, like the head butler Pennel did.

Penelope’s dress is a stark contrast to the one seen on the first season cover. Her dress is very bright and shorter, looking to be made for a more leisurely time. There is also a book in her hand and her expression is calm, while Emily brings a cheerful air.

3. The third in line is a main cover, and consequentially, the second season's cover.

On the cover we see Penelope and Reynold standing back to back, and the place is the attic where they had a verbal altercation, however Reynold understood where he went wrong. Their position shows how they are close but yet so far; Reynold from now on will try to mend his relationship with Penelope (in his own way), while Penelope for the time being doesn't want to have much to do with him. They will grow closer as time goes by.

Reynold has a remorseful expression while Penelope is almost indifferent, neutral even.

Some of her hair is resting on his shoulder, and she is holding a pink rose, which from my understanding is a nod towards Reynold since now we know that his affection score is pink.

I think that it all means that, despite the two of them having clashed the most, Penelope is still welcome to allow Reynold to be close to her.

Thorny vines are present at the top, together with pink roses and blue roses that look to be yet again hinting at Reynold’s affection score, and possibly how his relationship with her will be meant to be: lighthearted feelings, with brotherly love.

4. Like the second one, the fourth cover is mostly a physical copy cover, since season 2 was broken in parts for serialization reasons.

On the cover we see Penelope and Callisto, who is very present in the hunting arc. He stands far from Penelope, signaling that the two of them are not that 'close' during this time in the story. Callisto could also be considered as being more in the background since he is the farthest away from Penelope, unlike Emily and Reynold so far.

Callisto is looking at Penelope with an observant expression, whereas Penelope is looking at us. I’d like to point out that Penelope is always looking at the viewer, while if there are other characters in the cover, they are always looking at her.

Both of them are wearing their garments from the hunting tournament. Their weapons are also in sight, which are quite important in this particular arc.

Penelope’s crossbow and her use of it is what got her banned the previous year, and this time around it will be used to save both her and Callisto from the assassins chasing them. Callisto’s sword will slay the bear that attacked Penelope, and it was also used by him to aid Penelope in their fight against the assassins.

The missing thorns and roses signify Penelope’s views on Callisto at the time. She still does not consider him a love interest in full despite him being one.

It is highly likely that Callisto will get another cover, which will no doubt be a main season’s cover. I believe he will get more covers after that one too *cough* side stories and special chapters *cough*

5. The fifth cover is a main cover, and season’s 3 main cover.

It features Penelope and Derrick standing with their backs to each other, separated by prison bars, symbolizing Penelope's wrongful incarceration, as well as her cutting ties with Derrick after the trial.

The broken blue string is a call back to how Penelope was seen 'stepping’ on a blue ribbon, which is a figuration and meant to represent her relationship with Derrick, to show how she is once and for all cutting every connection to him, writing him out of her options.

Both of them are dressed in the same attire we see on them during the trial arc, showing exactly when their affiliation became strained.

Although they are standing back to back, it is very different from how Reynold did it, (Reynold was basically sitting next to her with her hair even falling on his shoulder, basically very close); Derrick on the other hand has no physical contact with Penelope whatsoever and we can only see half of his face, his figure is also fading towards the bottom.

In her hand Penelope is holding the dagger that was used as evidence to prove her innocence during the trial. The snapped string and the way she holds the dagger makes it appear as though she cut the string, which would be pretty ironic given how the dagger was the evidence of Penelope’s innocence, which Derrick doubted from the beginning, and because of his skepticism he did not get the chance to even know about the dagger before Penelope herself presented it during the trial.

Like with Reynold’s cover, there are thorny vines around the cover, however the roses here are darker in color and obviously meant to represent Derrick.

6. This is not a main cover, and is the filler cover for the continuation of season 3.

This cover represents the island arc where Winter is a prominent figure.

Like Reynold he is very close yet far at the same time, and like with Callisto, their distance shows a lack of complete trust from Penelope towards them. However whereas Callisto still didn't have Penelope's faith, Winter lost it in this arc.

Penelope's back is facing Winter, while he is reaching for her with a purple rose in his hand (the exact same color as his affection score), but there is no physical contact between the two.

Penelope is also adorning an almost indifferent expression. With his 'test’ to see if Penelope was a follower of the Leila, he endangered both the children and Penelope herself, which made her lose all of her hope in him.

At the season's end we see how Penelope cuts off ties with him as well and tells him to not look for her unless she looks for him first. It is pretty much the same situation that happened with Derrick; Penelope is giving her back to both of them with a serious and determinate expression on her face signaling how she ‘writes them off' her list of potential escape routes.

There is yet another pattern at the edges of the cover, consisting of thorny vines and roses in a coloring that represents the male lead featured on the cover.

The cover where Callisto is featured seems to be the only one so far (featuring a male lead) that does not have these thorny vines and roses, despite him very much being a male lead. I previously attributed that to his cover not being a main one, however after further inspecting Winter’s cover which is also a filler one like Callisto’s, I can say that it’s not the case. Perhaps the vines full of thorns are there to symbolize how each of the male leads did something that made Penelope reluctant to place trust in them and consequentially less prone to consider them successful escape routes.

7. The seventh cover was shared yesterday on twitter by Suol herself, and will most likely be the main cover for season 4.

This signals that the season will begin with Eckles coming back from his training, (I could explain the cover further, but it contains major spoilers so I won't include this segment, and I will be vague with the discernment of the cover's symbolism).

Eckles is shown to have a desperate expression on his face, and there is also a little distance between him and Penelope.

Due to the previous pattern of the last two covers, as well as Penelope's almost doubtful/ incredulous and somewhat 'angry’ expression, one could assume that Eckles did something that made him fall from Penelope's graces, so she'll most likely take a distance from him too.

Let’s talk about hand placement. His right hand is still the one that's holding the magical sword Penelope gifted to him when they went out and she bought him all the training equipment, together with the amulets for the Duke, Emily and Callisto.

His left hand looks to be holding Penelope’s quite tightly and she is not reciprocating the gesture, her hand is limp in his. There’s also a crumpled dark red rose in his grip that he is trying to make Penelope hold. Yet again, I believe that this detail too is showing how Penelope completely gave up on Eckles: he symbolizes the crumpled rose, and it’s almost as if someone let it fall to the ground in an uncaring fashion; while Eckles is trying desperately to make her change her mind.

Penelope is positioned physically higher than Eckles. Perhaps it’s a hint towards their difference of ranks and how Eckles views this in a bad light.

The background consists of the thorny vines that were present in the previous two covers and Reynold’s as well (which backs up further the theory that Penelope will distance herself from Eckles), with roses of pale and darker colors, which make them seem as if they're withering; the two of them look to be inside of the greenhouse, where they did appear once before.

Their attire is the same as when they went together shopping, which is a little unusual since it’s an ‘old’ reoccurrence, and it breaks the sequence of the characters wearing the same clothes from the beginning of the season/arc they’re meant to represent.

About the cover of VADD season 4 live stream...

In my last reblog, there is an excellent recap posted by Seirclys about the recent live stream that SUOL-nim did.

In this post I will mention the main info about the cover and some comments in Korean that I observed in the youtube chat or found on TW.

1. About the new cover of season 4 and the return date...

Winter and Penelope will be on the cover of season 4. Penelope is wearing her outfit from episode 110, but Winter is not wearing his sorcerer outfit but his marquis outfit. They are near the seashore like in episode 113, but the sun is setting and in the background you can see Arkina Island. Winter is behind Penelope (just like in the image above), trying to stop her without touching her and holding a purple rose in his right hand. Penelope is turning her back to him and looking at the reader, while the ancient magic relic is levitating on her right hand.

It's likely that for volume 6 or 7 we have a cover with Penelope and Eckles (SUOL-nim show us a sketch of it, but she did not confirm anything).

It's also likely that season 4 will be released in early fall🍁

2. Interesting facts:

There were moments where we heard SUOL-nim laugh, and I only know the reason for two:

Someone joked (in Korean) that Winter looked like an old man while she was painted his hair and she started to laugh hehe

The Korean fandom found out that Winter's alias (in episode 117) in English was Winston hehe

Previously SUOL-nim mentioned that Callisto's hair was hard to draw since painted blondes was a bit difficult for her, but this time she added that Callisto's hair is essential in the story so it's quite a challenge to illustrate it perfectly

When SUOL-nim was asked what Duke Eckhart's name was, she said that the duke was just the Duke Eckhart

SUOL-nim confirmed that Emily does Penelope's manicure

SUOL-nim mentioned the color tones she uses on the characters: cold tones are for Penelope, Derrick and Winter; warm tones are for Callisto and Reynold; the neutral tone is for Eckles.

What could the novel had done better?

I know I haven’t been active lately lol but I assured you I am here 😭….

Part of me had a question that was * what could have been done better in the novel * and well of course like any other manhwa or novel a lot of things in vadtd could have been better but there are 3 things I think that could have been handled better…..

I think in novel chapters 198 where it was revealed our penny and og are same shouldn’t have been done ( I know this a popular opinion lol) instead they could have maybe shown us that og penny after she died look for someone to help her and she ask ancient wizards to bring her someone like her. Which is why ancient wizards created the game and waited for someone like siyeon and they brought her to the world…..( this sounds a lot like @seirclys post about og lol)

the backstory we got for og Yvonne in side stories was useless they could have just told us she died and leila got her body simply as that…rather then that I would have love to see og penny meet siyeon instead and they could have connected and we could have seen og sayings she is thankful for siyeon help. i would love to see siyeon apologies for saying that og was foolish again could have been connection as well….personally I feel like authors giving us Yvonne backstory was to justify eckarts behavior as to why they acted like that ( which is so dumb author just love to redeem them lol 😭 ) I feel like us seeing og penny and her thoughts about eckarts and her sayings she just don’t care about them could have redeem them more then Yvonne. As og just doesn’t care and told siyeon that she is now penny as og gets an option to reincarnate. So again og finally gets her happy ending rather then that dumb way of saying * I was alway the og penny 💀 hate that troop *

This one is completely different from other two but I feel like they should have given us a wedding chapter like in details like as in how duke walk penny though the aisle and seeing him cry lol and penny and callisto finally kiss as in husband and wife lol…this could have been done if the author remove the coronation now don’t get me wrong yes it’s part of callisto character to be emperor and blabla…..but the coronation was so bland lol ( again it had amazing moments but not that much good in opinion lol) the weddings could have done much more for him and penny character. also if the author wanted a coronation that badly just do both at the same day we did see callisto say he wanted both at the same day so like just do that I guess 💀…..

As always these are my thoughts so if you differed then it’s ok lol everyone have their own opinion (pls don’t come after me 😭💀) anyways I would like to thank @seirclys as some of these point i had talk a lot with her and again I do recommend seeing her post about og and siyeon……at this point both her and me are og penny protecting gang lol

I tried to draw their designs as closely as I could based on the description you gave on the post. Though there are some parts where I had to improvise like Thios' hair type, his hair pin and his eyes, and Leithe (?) Bangs as well as the gold accessories mentioned which took me a while to dig up on Pinterest to find one that matches well with the spider lily hair pins.

These are just quick sketches which took like 35 mins in total cuz I'm pumped with inspo and motivation to draw them as quickly as possible before it dried up after reading chapter 8, 9 and all of shrike all over again soooo, I can't draw them digitally yet, ehe

The Iokan Court: Empress Penelope's Ladies-in-Waiting

I'm starting a new series on Iokan Court life which combines my two loves: VADD and history. These are probably one of the longest series of posts I'm ever making.

Ladies-in-Waiting are the noblewomen and aristocrats who act as personal attendants, companions and private secretaries (sometimes spies) to a Queen/Empress. Most of them a usually married to high ranking aristocratic men. The Empress can select any noblewoman as her lady-in-waiting, including members of her family, widows and infamous individuals. They also have a very high personal salary. Ladies-in-Waiting can also gain political and social powers while serving under their mistress. Most, if not all ladies, are powerful players in the game of politics, due to their imperial connections. All ladies report gossip, rumors, marriages, and possible alliances to their mistress.

Lady Marianne Terosi Porter, Countess Porter - She is currently a professor of archaeology at the Imperial Academy and wife of Count Cedrick Porter (Callisto made him a count for his services). She is the only part-time lady-in-waiting who accompanies Penny during her archaeological exploits and was the second one appointed to her. She also has three kids with Cedric. She is the only daughter of Count Terosi, who opposed her archeological pursuits.

Lady Emily Meyer Reuss - She was granted a noble last name (Reuss) and a ladyship rank by Callisto so that she could become Penny's lady-in-waiting. At this point, she and Reynold were still an dating in secret. Since becoming a lady, she's been able to provide for her family and pay off some debts. Also, she managed to save a lot of money and finally indulge in things for herself, like nicer clothes, reading, and better shoes. She is the main lady-in-waiting for Penny while she's in the Palace. She does the companionship thing the most but also reports rumors in the palace.

Lady Thalia Verdandi - She's @bluebutterflyrose and @eloise175 's character. She was recommended as a lady-in-waiting by her cousin, Vinter. She basically looks like a female version of Vinter. She is a very optimistic yet secretive lady, who is two years older than Penny. The Imperial Children love her because she also helps Vinter out with the magic and sorcery stuff. She also helps Penny with magic issues when he's gone. She is in charge of wardrobe and dressing. Her job is mostly picking out Penny's outfits and jewelry every single day. Which is a very stressful job since imperial clothing can be used to convey underlying messages.

Lady Valerie "Val" Amerling, Marquise Amerling - A personal creation of mine. She is the baroness's (Callisto's nanny) daughter who is the same age as Callisto. She has mid-length silver grey hair and dark blue eyes. Generally, looks menacing and judgmental but she just has a resting b*tch face and is really nice and supportive. She is married to Marquis Amerling, a General in the army but he's away at the borderlands, most of the time. She also has 4 kids with him. Her job is to help with Penny with her daily schedule and is her head lady-in-waiting because of her experience.

Lady Selene Hanover, Marquise Hanover - @bluebutterflyrose helped me out with her. She has long moss green hair and hazel brown eyes. Usually appears quiet and formal but looks out for Penny and the rest of the ladies like little sisters. She's the second-oldest lady after Val. She’s a year or 2 older than Penny and is married to one of Callisto's commanders in his army, with whom she has two sons with. Her job mostly involves managing Penny's massive wardrobe, buying clothes, and working with Thalia.

Lady Edelheide "Edie" Pyrmont - @seirclys helped me out with her. She is the orphaned daughter of a noble under Vinter's domain. Shortly after her parents died, she became his ward until she's turned 18. Although her status at birth is uncertain (It was speculated that her mother had a lover), she is still considered a member of nobility. Her reputation amongst the nobility is neutral, with an air of mystery surrounding her. Because of her so-so reputation, she is Penny's unofficial personal informant, rumor master, and spy. She does the most socializing out of all the ladies because of her job. She also has no intention of ever marrying because she's already content in life.

I need to get this out of my system, after a talk I had with some mutuals of mine (happy to say we all agree on this), and it contains novel spoilers, I warned you. No this post does not contain humor or jokes like my usual posts, it is just me giving a take on what exactly is going on in the Vadd fandom because some people seem to be reading a completely different novel/manhwa than most, like @seirclys mentioned, and I couldn’t agree more.

I often see people defending Ecklies, (or whatever the hell you wanna call him), saying ‘but he’s innocent/ poor baby🥺👉🏻👈🏻’ sis- this man is anything but innocent/innocuous/oblivious , this man is SMART.

I’m not saying this as a compliment, he is smart because you see how well he hides his real intentions and twisted nature, from when he literally betrayed his fellow people; brought Yvonne (aka Leila) back to the duchy after everything Penelope did for him, effectively backstabbing her, because he wanted to make her solely depend on him, (obsessive nature).

He tried to kidnap Penelope when she turned down his offer to ‘run away together’ and decided to ‘follow Leila’ (kinda?) so he could have Penelope by his side

Still like @seirclys mentioned in a similar post to this, do you really think that Leila would’ve let Penelope live when she is the only one that can actively stop her schemes and defeat her? Not a chance, keep dreaming.

Also- another thing I see, that makes me want to violently bang my head against the nearest solid surface for the sheer stupidity of it, is ‘he has wasted potential/the author did him dirty/ the author made a mistake-bad choice when they made Callisto the male lead’

1. What wasted potential are we exactly talking about?? Where? Please enlighten me.

•Every story plot is thought through before being published or written. Every character has their role, and in his case, Ecklies was designed to be the ‘twisted/ dark/ obsessive character’ (kinda like an antagonist) from the very start. Otherwise we would’ve seen a very different outcome, don’t you think?

2. Stop saying that the author did a mistake or a bad choice! That’s disrespectful.

•The author has put in much work in the novel, and then someone random comes and takes a shit on that. Literally one of the most disrespectful things I’ve seen people comment. The author made that choice, respect it. You don’t like it? Don’t comment and move on, or write your own original story- Wattpad and Ao3 are free, who knows maybe a lot of people will like your story.

3. Callisto was created to be the male lead. Every character fills their purpose and role.

•I know I jest around a lot when it comes to Callisto, but jokes aside, he really did do some fucked-up shit and his ways weren’t really ‘it’ the first time he interacted with Penelope, but we see him have a growth (humanly speaking), and we learn why he did what he did, can’t say that I approve of some of his ways, but he actually had a motive. He also has something called character development, what some like to ignore completely.

Another good example of character development we see in the story is Reynold, who might not be the best, but he has a nice redemption and growth throughout the arc of the story. That is how you make a character redeemable. (Can’t say I forgive his actions, but at least he tried to make amends for the shit he has done).

What makes me really laugh is seeing ‘Ecklies is innocuous baby and Callisto is the bad guy’. Again- are we even reading the same story anymore?? Ma’am- Ecklies makes Callisto’s crazy moment look innocent. What are you talking about?? At least Callisto didn’t try to kidnap Penelope, nor did he backstab her. Need I remind you that Callisto was literally on the verge of death but he still put Penelope first and was willing to let her go because that’s what she wanted?? Now THIS is real love.

-And reminder that Ecklies followed/stalked Penelope around for three years (in the side stories) because he wanted to kill her:

How can you really say that he’s the good guy after this??

And for the ones who keep on insisting that it was Penelope’s/ Syieon’s fault because ‘she used him’ you selectively decide to remember that. Ecklies also used and tried to manipulate her.

They used each other. With Syieon choosing to raise his favorability because he was the apparently ‘easiest target’ out of the five morons that are the male leads, to Ecklies that hated everything that Penelope/Siyeon was and wanted to make her rely on him only so his twisted tendencies could thrive. You see how toxic all this trash-fire is? Would you honestly like that?

I say that Penelope did a good choice when she rejected him, I would too. Ecklies scares me shitless and in her place, I would be terrified of him. He literally can kill her at anytime even without meaning to. He just needs to lash out ONCE, even unintentionally, and it’s game over for Penelope.

I know that people like it because it’s fiction, but there is something that attracts/appeals you for you to like it, and this brings me to the question- would you really like to have a relationship like that? Please stop romanticizing toxic/abusive relationships, be it fiction or not.

I also noticed that there are a ton of other different manhwas that have the male lead do similar things to Callisto, however people seem to fly over that completely. Why is that you may ask? I’ll tell you- it’s because Ecklies is good looking, and appeals aesthetically to the reader. His good looks can’t compensate for what he did.

DISCLAIMER: I don’t care what you ship, just stay out of my little bubble and keep your hate and spite to yourself. The real problem manifests when:

-people romanticize toxic/abusive/obsessive relationships and push it onto others, sometimes actively being rude to other people for the ships they like.

-go out of your way to make a good character look bad only to make your favorite pass as ‘baby/cute/innocent’ (who is considerably worse). And politely, stop looking for excuses to make a character look terrible just because you dislike them.

-take a shit on the author’s hard work; again, go write your own story if you don’t like it.

-spread misinformation and false spoilers that mislead others.
