Publishing has always been a fucking nightmare, but now it’s a layer of hell. It’s not enough that writers be good at what they do. Writers have to maintain an active social media presence and cultivate a following. Be available.
They have to be conventionally attractive enough to look good enough to see on a screen, aesthetically pleasing, kind, funny, up-to-date on trends, socially aware but not so controversial that they turn off a brand from California from slapping their discount code on a video promoting a book.
They have to do all of this with no media training, with little help from the companies that are supposed to be doing this for them.
Of course, a lot of this isn't possible for say, the 40-something mother of two who teaches English at a school and writes on the side. She’s boxed out of an already complex industry that already has enough walls.
On some level, I think authors have always marketed themselves a little, but we’ve reached such a crazy point where we’re demanding the author become the influencer. Accessibility in publishing has narrowed from an inch to a sliver. And that inch was hard enough to get in as is.

Are you looking for queer art and a queer book by an ace author/artist?
I wrote/designed one!!!!!
Starting as a way that I celebrated my own ace identity in 2017 before it was as well known as it is now, this project turned into a way to celebrate queerness of all sorts with a fuck ton of pride flags.
So where can you buy it?
Bookshop, Barnes and Noble, Amazon (do bookshop if you can, it supports indie bookstores)
If you want to make sure you catch all the dates, please please please sign up for my newsletter. It’s less than once a month, so it will not be one of those annoying nonstop emails. I just use it to announce book releases and open commissions!
Happy Lunar New Year! In our house, we’re jokingly calling it the Luna New Year. I’m proud and excited to announce that my partner, Alexis, is about to publish her debut novel! LOVE IN THE OCCULT TRAUMATIC is a paranormal romance set for digital release on March 1st. I provided the cover art for the characters, and Alexis and I worked on the cover design together. Here’s what the story is about:
Heidi Bauer would give anything to not be able to read people’s memories. Yet every time she sees blood, she loses consciousness and gets a glimpse into the private inner worlds of the wound’s owner, tracing through the events that caused the injury—with frightening precision.
She can’t tell anyone this, of course. It’s bad enough that she has severe PTSD and hemophobia, but unexplained magical powers as well? She’d rather spiral into jobless poverty than admit the truth and risk getting locked up in some kind of mental institution.
That is, until she meets the handsome and caring Dr. Bùi Đức Khiêm. Despite Heidi’s intentions of telling no one her secret, she finds herself opening up to the psychiatrist better than her own therapist—in more ways than one.
And yet, while Dr. Khiêm may not have any powers, he’s hiding secrets of his own. So when a mysterious figure starts to stalk Heidi in pursuit of her hidden gift, it isn’t just her safety that’s threatened, but Khiêm’s too. Together, Heidi and Khiêm learn that not all wounds are visible—and healing them may cost one of their lives.

Just a warning, it’s steamy! So if you’re interested, know someone who would be, or even if neither apply, we would really appreciate it if you could spread the word about the book and help find readers.
It’s been a joy to witness Alexis’ journey through the years, from a CPA working for one of the big four accounting firms to pursuing her talent and passion as a novelist. Although I sometimes feel a little guilty for inspiring her with my comic book career—the path of following your dreams is definitely not easy. But Alexis’ fire gave me the gift of helping reignite my own fire, especially when there have been many people throughout my journey who’ve tried to snuff it out. So in this year of the dragon, let’s remember to protect those dreams and the inner fires that fuel them. 🐉
Alexis set up a FB and Tumblr page, so feel free to check them out, say hi, and give her a follow!
I've self-pulished an E-Book of my colouring book! (to print out/Or digital colouring). (I'll figure out a way to publish an A4 paperback, but it hasn't worked yet.)
If you really want to do something you will put so much effort into it that you feel like it's dumb.
Even if it's just mundane details that no one will ever see in the final product. If you truly love your project you will put your whole heart and soul into it no matter if you need 6 month breaks sometimes.
If you aren't willing to do this, and you feel like working on it is a burden, you maybe should consider starting something different.
The LitRPG genre is a unique literary niche that transports readers into immersive worlds reminiscent of video games and tabletop RPGs. It's a literary playground where game mechanics, character progression, and RPG elements drive the narrative forward. Imagine stepping into a virtual realm where every decision, action, and encounter carries weight, much like in your favorite gaming adventures.
In King of Dust, I've taken the essence of LitRPG and woven it into a rich tapestry of fantasy, comedy, and LGBTQ romance. Set in the land of Starkovia, readers will follow the journey of Darius, a protagonist grappling with the weight of his past and the complexities of his present. As Darius navigates the treacherous terrain of Starkovia, he'll encounter formidable foes, forge unlikely alliances, and embark on quests that will test his strength, resolve, and morality.
What sets King of Dust apart is its seamless integration of gaming elements into the narrative fabric. From epic boss battles to side quests, every aspect of the story is steeped in the rich tradition of RPG gaming. Whether you're a seasoned gamer or a newcomer to the genre, King of Dust offers a thrilling and immersive reading experience that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
If trying out this genre interests you, you can check out King of Dust on Kickstarter! The link is in my pinned post (look for the Linktree, and then head on over to the Kickstarter!)
Finally posting some of the pictures I took of my 31 Days of Cats Zine I’ve been working on!! I’m working on self publishing this book through print on demand through Amazon! While I loved manufacturing this little book myself, it’s far too time consuming for me to make these for cat lovers out there who may want this book, so I’m going the print on demand route with Amazon KDP! I’m aiming for the book to be available December 30th!
For day 1 of Inktober I have a monster zine I made this weekend (㇏(•̀ᵥᵥ•́)ノ) I’m selling these for $2- shoot me a message if u want one (I also have them in pink, blue, and orange)!
i am a queer, latina poet and i published my first book in january of this year but it hasn’t gotten much traction... maybe this will help get it to the right audience 🏠🤍
