So one of the things I've been thinking more about because of the Hadestown-Rayllum overlap (re: Orpheus starting out optimistic and then slowly having his morale worn down over the course of the play, in spite of his successes) and how it pertains to arc 2 Rayllum's foil switching

is that yes, by the start of arc 1, Callum is undeniably more jaded and closed off than he was in arc 1 by a long shot (largely because of Rayla's absence just like Orpheus with Eurydice) and by the end of S5 he's been worn down even further by everything that happened, and everything he chose to do, on Finnegrin's ship

There is one scene, I think, where Callum is undeniably his old self in terms of having a more optimistic outlook, and providing Rayla with a kinder, more traditionally Callum-y perspective, re: him seeing new worth and beauty even, or especially, in the things Rayla initially dismisses (the cube, the wonder of Xadia's magic, and even herself):

C: I know dark magic created this place, but it's a bridge... between our two worlds. And now [hand on heart] here we are, crossing it together.

(And I have lots of feelings about Callum being the first to talk about them being Together again, in any capacity, as Rayla only has her sweet little line about it in the stargazing after this scene; as well as Rayla once again acknowledging that she hurt Callum - not him himself - but both of them also accepting that they're healing, and that her very presence, is healing him again too. But post for another day.)

And just like in the boat scene, Rayla comes around with a tiny smile on her face.

Rayla makes him more optimistic. Rayla, just being back and being there, is enough to start this process for him, to help him look on the bright side of things again. He loves her, and that's everything.

well i suppose i should probably put this up here! here is my SVSSS hadestown au, with YQY as orpheus and SJ as eurydice. other casting choices are SQH as hermes (with a meta twist), bingge as hades, and SY/SQQ as persephone.

Currently 84, hopefully 85 before I go to bed! (We’ll see how that goes—I’m answering asks/tags because the fic words won’t work rn and I’m trying to distract my brain into figuring out how to finish the fic)

2. What's your total Ao3 word count?

313,076

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Primarily The Magnus Archives, but also Hello from the Hallowoods, The Murderbot Diaries, and I’ve got both Vesta Clinic and Tell No Tales fic ideas percolating. I also have a Sherlock Holmes short mystery I’ll eventually share, probably lol

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments?

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

This Is Our Last Goodnight - I tagged it “this is the bad ending,” for reference lol. I do have a wip that will be worse than that one, though—its wip title is The Bad Ending, and its published title will be The Archive Undying. It’s…yeah, it’s not a happy one, but I’m very pleased with how it’s turning out (it is, however, not the fic I’m hoping to finish tonight)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I tend to write happy endings for TMA, probably because it is a tragedy and I do enjoy writing the opposite, but I also like making people feel good with my writing. Happiest ending is, I think, hard to pick, but I am very fond of how Have I Always Loved You ends (and I’m only a little biased because I gave it the same title as the song I walked down the aisle to)

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Uh, I have before, in a fandom from a long time ago

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do, but not often, and I typically write from my own experience as a sex-neutral/sex-favorable ace.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Not usually, I can’t remember one but I think I did one a long time ago? I don’t have anything against them, and in fact there are some I really enjoy, but I find it hard to combine multiple sets of characters in my own head in understandable ways. Everything becomes all smushed together and characters lose themselves. I instead combine worlds and use only one set of characters from that world. For example, I’m working on a TMA-Hadestown fusion story, where it takes the structure and world of Hadestown and overlays TMA on top of it, so that both worlds are recognizable but the story I’m telling is still distinct (someday, this fic will be finished. It’s…an undertaking lol)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not that I know of

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes! And I’m hoping to do so again! I enjoy co-writing

14. What's your all time favorite ship?

Jmart has definitely taken over my brain, and they’re in the Hall of Fame for ships for me now. Is that my all time favorite ship? I don’t know, I don’t know how to even determine that for myself

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I’m not speaking this into existence, I’m going to pretend all of my wips will get finished, because if I even hint to myself I might not do it, then I definitely won’t. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy really

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue, emotions, and turns of phrase—I’m good with metaphors and using slightly unusual phrasings to evoke particular images, sensations, or feelings

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

I get stuck in my own head a lot, trying to figure out the “best” way to write something instead of the way that works to tell the story, and I can get very tell-not-show-y when I’m having problems getting through a scene

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I don’t know if I’ve done that, but I don’t mind it. I love when writers give translations, because I like trying to figure out which words correspond to what and how the sentence is structured. I enjoy languages lol, even though I’ve had a hard time in the last couple of years retaining any (damn you brain fog *shakes fist*)

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Technically, Encyclopedia Brown (a kid detective)—it was a closed door murder mystery, and even twenty years later I’m still fairly pleased with how I reasoned out the ending. First fandom I published a fic online for? HP, although you won’t find any of my HP fics on ao3 anymore. FF.net probably still has some, but I abandoned the username I used there a long time ago

20. Favorite fic you've written?

Okay, actually, don’t @ me, but my favorite fic ever was an HP fic I wrote when I was first trying to use fiction writing to process an abusive relationship I was in during college. It was the first time I really put a lot of myself emotionally into a fic, and it turned out really well, but it’s no longer available online. I intend to rewrite it from scratch as an original piece and put it in a short story collection someday

My favorite fic you can find on ao3, though, that’s harder. I write fics that I personally like, or else I change the story or stop writing it altogether. Fic is for fun for me, and I don’t want to waste time on a fic that I don’t enjoy. Mysterious Love and Lucky Stars are both definitely up there, but I’ll go with a fic I haven’t mentioned yet—And There’s You, which is just a really really self-indulgent five chapter jmart love-fest of a fic

three ships: ah, oof. idk what to answer this based on, so I'll go with three ships that I've read a lot of in recent history: Zoscar (Zolf/Oscar from Rusty Quill Gaming), Marvin/Whizzer from Falsettos, and Dream/Hob from Sandman. (That also quite neatly sums up the different mediums I primarily follow now, heh.)

first ever ship: okay wow this took me back! Probably Dannyl/Tayend from the Kyralia series by Trudi Canavan. It was reading them during The Traitor Spy trilogy that helped my baby ace self first see the appeal of shipping. (man, I miss those books :') )

last song: probably Epic II from Hadestown. Was listening to that on repeat while baking earlier (I canNOT get enough of "the pickaxe flashes / the hammer falls" and the music during "king of mortar / king of bricks" <3)

last movie: 18 Pages, although tbh the movie was just an excuse to meet up with some lovely folks for the first time in yearssss :)

currently reading: mostly fanfic of late, but I'm also attempting to wrestle my attention span into letting me finish What Matters In Jane Austen by John Mullan. It is a delightful read digging into how Regency society functioned in order to better appreciate just how brilliant Austen's writing is, and I am LOVING it.

currently consuming: is this about food? media? idk, but I just finished dinner so my answer's going to be uppudu pindi with avakai. (I am. very telugu in some ways, yes.) (avakai is the most basic mango pickle and I have no idea how describe the former, so take my word for it when I say it is the superior low-effort comfort meal.)

currently craving: some direction in life would be nice, but I'll settle for some piping hot chocolate slab cookies. tried baking some earlier but they turned out brittle instead of chewy since my baking soda stabbed me in the back :(

-Opposites Attract, or very similar?

Like. a mix. Mostly they're similar but with some opposite attracting properties- Army's more reserved and anxious and Emp is confident in pretty much any situation

-Which one confessed first?

There wasn't really a confession, they met on a blind date, feelings grew from there kinda mutually. If it counts, Emp asked for a second date

-Do they have a go-to date?

Since Emp is rich as hell, he can afford to pay for good seats to various musicals or plays in the area. Army being a theater nerd, you can already tell that's a go-to. Army has seen Hadestown 4 times now.

-which one proposes?

Emperor. This dramatic fucker- He and Army go stargazing on their anniversary of dating and as Army's rambling some self-depricating nonsense ("you shouldn't be with me, you could do so much better..." that sort of thing) and he turns to face Emperor who's holding a ring.

-Who's the big spoon?

Emperor may be short but Army's shorter. Emp by default

-Do they have pets or kids? both?

Mainly pets- a fluffy white cat Prince named Cloudtail in xyr warrior cats phase, Mittens the kitten, and also a crow that visits sometimes named Fredrick. Sometimes he's called Freddie

They have literally one- every anniversary, they go stargazing

-What's their dynamic?

👀👀👀 Thank you for enabling me anon!! I may have written a lot I’m sorry!!

So I have two legit Hadestown aus (like, about the canon characters) and then several that are basically just a bunch of other ships placed into the Hadestown story. It’s funny, though, because you can’t really do a traditional “modern/fantasy/coffee shop Hadestown au” because the play itself is already “steampunk au of the Orpheus myth” LOL, so it’s kind of just my interpretations and ‘what if’s of the play. My crossover ideas include erasercloud, forsython, serirei, korrasami, and zelink!

Idea 1: I know some people like the thought that the characters are stuck in this sort of time loop thing. My sister firmly believes it's all happening within Hermes' mind, and he's trapped within a cycle of reliving these memories. I like to play around with the idea that the whole show is in Orpheus's mind, and the loop is a relatively good thing. (I’m still calling it au, but I guess nothing visibly changes in the play. It’s just adding extra context that changes Orpheus’ internal thoughts. It’s my fix-it au without actually cutting out the tragedy.) His mother was a muse – what if she was Mnemosyne, goddess of memory, and with Hermes’ help and prompting, she gives her son this loop as a blessing. He's just falling in love with the love of his life over and over, saving the world over and over. Even if Orpheus lost Eurydice in reality, now he’s always with her in his memory.

I like to think that he's very self-aware of his role in this loop. He’s viewing everything with complete knowledge (but still unable to act any differently since it's just a memory), but it brings him peace. Not only is it wonderful to relive all his time with Eurydice, but replaying the tragedy so much it slowly likely takes away a bit of the sting and offers him closure. With every repetition he's analyzing everything. At first he looked to what he did wrong, or blamed others, but over time he starts making new realizations and connections. He starts seeing how so many variables fit into the story rather than just the fateful looking back moment. He sees everything in the play: Eurydice’s private songs, the gods’ fights, and even gets that look into Hades’ thoughts about himself. Just as I'm learning new things about the connections and consequences and themes every time I listen, so is he.

Idea 2: This is more of a traditional au because it’s just ‘what if’s. Here, Orpheus is reliving all this without the help of any muse – he’s obsessively repeating his “mistakes” trying to dissect what he did wrong and trying to change them now that he can see the bigger picture. First, he stays with Eurydice during the storm so she never dies in the first place. He thinks this would have given them their happy ending, but things only get worse since Hades and Persephone still hate each other. The world continues out of balance and dying, and Orpheus must live with the knowledge of the workers still trapped in Hadestown. As things spiral, he tries to use his song but can a) never get an audience with the gods because he can't sing himself into Hadestown now that his motivation to do so doesn't exist or b) he gets there but he's too late and the gods' relationship is too far gone. As the world falls apart, he’s haunted by the knowledge that he could have fixed it. The next loop, he tries to negotiate better with Hades once he reaches the underworld. No deal about looking back. The only way Hades agreed was to demand the workers stay, and Orpheus takes the deal and escapes easily with Eurydice. Similarly, he can’t actually live happily ever knowing that he damned those workers to their eternity.

This continues until the only choice he’s left with is just… not looking back. But every time he tries, something makes him do it. He’s worried she’s not there, he’s worried it’s a trick, he thinks the workers aren’t there, the silence gets to him, or even because of good reasons (one of the original versions of the myth is that he turned back in celebration because he was out and thought she was too). No matter what Orpheus does, he always ends up at that moment, looking back. It always makes me emotional thinking about that “mistake” as fated to happen in order to save the rest of the world, or just unchangeable human nature, or his unchangeable nature, or set in stone because of myth/history. Even with infinite looping chances where Orpheus can break free from his story, all roads lead to the same spot, and there is only one outcome. 💔

Lmao and then we have the crossover aus, because the main relationship has everything I could want from a love story (aside from the dying RIP) so all the songs make me think “but what if this was my blorbos” :0

I actually already did a bit of doodling of a bnha erasercloud version! This one has fit the best because their canon relationship really did end in tragedy, so I don’t need to add any extra angst in my life when I run through the plot beginning to end asdfsd. I think they suit the roles really well, and there’s so much reflection of the weather/wind that could go hand in hand with Shirakumo’s cloud symbolism. Also, there are so many lines about seeing the world a certain way, and the fact that Aizawa’s power is centered around sight (and that Shirakumo canonically dies to protect Aizawa’s sight) is super significant.

Of course I’ve have forsython thoughts – the amount of times I’ve played through “Come Home With Me/Wedding Song” with Forsyth as the wide-eyed, optimistic poet in love and Python as the jaded, poor pessimist (featuring Hermes-Lukas as his wingman). I’d keep the steampunk setting exactly the same. Forsyth’s intense hope despite the world fits “Wait for Me” so well, and he’s prone to self-doubt when pushed too far. Python suits the role so well, and I think there’s some good stuff around “Flowers” and the consequences of his apathy. I toyed around with Mila/Duma being the gods: Mila has a summer song about a bountiful harvest and fun, while Duma’s city is dominated by work and power. Obviously in my head, the love they rekindle would be familial – but the whole point was that there were parallel romances, so I never could commit to that idea.

It was a bit more of a stretch than the previous two, but it was really fun thinking about a seirei version! It’s take place in the normal mp100 setting, and leaning into that hell train vibes from the OVA. Reigen’s totally faking that he can sing this super-powered song to fix the out-of-balance world (I mean, really, what kind of lyrics are ‘la la la’?) but he’s completely earnest in his attempts to show Serizawa how beautiful the world could be. Serizawa is torn between returning to his safe isolation or venturing out in society with Reigen. After he starts getting out more, he gets tangled up with two insanely powerful spirits who pull him into that other dimension by train. Reigen bluffs his way into this dangerous spirit dimension with his “psychic” song. He has a knack for accidentally becoming a leader to large groups of people, so the workers (suffering spirits?) are quickly attracted to him. When he gets there, though, his genuine love for Seri and the world are what convince the spirits to let everyone go. But when it comes down to it, Reigen starts panicking that he’s a fraud and the song wasn’t real. His imposter syndrome and doubt makes him look back :(

A super quick idea was a korrasami one, although tbh Korra may actually may be too self-assured and determined to look back so maybe it ends up okay 😅 It’d be set in a mix of Republic City and the steampunk vibes, with Yue would be Hades and her failed romance would cause the tides to go crazy and harm the human world. I didn’t spend a ton of time on this one because it’s been a while since I’ve had atla/lok brain but maybe I go back to it eventually…

My most recent comparison has been a skyward sword zelink version simply because of how well it fits. A slightly clueless but heartfelt Link plays his special song on the goddess harp. He travels “down below” to save his lover, who previously was unhappy with the way things were. Hylia and Demise used to bring balance to the world but she spends so much time caring for the humans that he gets jealous. The major difference here is it’s interesting twist: “Eurydice” and “Persephone” end up being the same person, much to their lovers’ surprise. How they rekindle a love with two separate people at once I’m not quite sure, but I’m working on it hehe

Like that original post said, I doubt there’s a big audience for any of these -- but either way I really enjoy them and maybe someone else will too! :D
