Villain's Day Off

Reader insert, 2nd POV. You encounter two aliens in one day, Part 1

Someone melted today. You were trained in providing first aid as many visitors suffered from heat while enjoying the various exhibits. Dehydration was also common, it was staff policy to be able to locate and safely administer fluids to collapsed guests. This doesn't even begin to cover your experience with emergencies regarding specific illnesses like diabetes and PTSD. But this particular guest had melted. Literally, into a puddle of frenzied and incoherent goo. You had found him in one of the Staff Only walkways between exhibits, from a distance you watched as the body of a child collapsed onto the ground. You sprinted over and arrived to the sorry sight you were now agonizing over.

The slimed person was semi-understandable, although he mumbled in a language you couldn't understand between answering your questions. You learned he was an alien, you couldn't pronounce his name, he suffered heatstroke trying to get pictures of the pandas to send back to his mother, and knowing that it would be bad to collapse in front of humans he hid as best he could. When he told you he was an alien you hoped that you would be able to discard your propriety in favor of your self preservation- but...

"L-Lord General is going to be s-s-so mad..." He whimpered pathetically, sounding tearful (and like he was leaking snot) despite being in a semi-liquid state. You sighed and clicked your tongue.

"I'm going to get a bucket so we can transfer you inside." One time you had a coworker complain that your sense of professionalism was scary. That person was notorious for slacking so you didn't think much of it at the time but now that you were automatically assuming the role of alien-caregiver you wondered if they might have been right.

Your nonsolid friend slipped into a standard gallon feeding bucket with your assistance. A number of threats passed through him first, promising "great agonizing pain" should you be capturing him as a prisoner of war. While carrying him to the nearest staff prep station, you contacted your manager and coworkers telling them that you found a man suffering from heatstroke and was working with him to contact his girlfriend. Obviously this wasn't true but you didn't want to deal with the rangers and a group of alien punks destroying the zoo. To this end, you made your own threats.

"I'm glad you like our pandas, our breeding program has had a lot of success." You made small talk while settling the bucket in a cool dark corner.

"Ah, yes. Because they are endangered...thanks to your human selfishness." The alien looked at you at first with awe but then as if remembering his allegiance, disdain.

"We have had such good practice...you know it takes years for pandas to mate. They are very sensitive creatures so their environment must be calm and stable for them to start reproducing." You ignore his hostility. "It took a lot of time for them to feel comfortable. They are not accustomed to sudden loud noises and the terror leaves them with tummy aches or even worse." You have his attention, although you can't see his eyes you can feel them trained on your body in growing horror.

"Or...or even worse?" He gulps. You pretend to be nonchalant.

"For instance...heart attacks. But we don't have to worry about that because the visitors of our zoo are well mannered." You smile at the alien. "Anyway, who should I contact to pick you up?"

He falls silent for a few seconds as he contemplates calling the standard safety lines put into place for captured allies or... he didn't have a choice. The standard protocols would be intrusive on the pandas.

From the oozy bucket an oval walkie-talkie looking comms device appeared at the top.

"This. Press the right button and hold it to me so I can request they connect me to the commander." You do as instructed and listen as your alien patient speaks on the line to someone else in his (frankly adorable) foreign language. You tried not to giggle as what followed was clearly space-elevator music. The alien in the bucket wiggled impatiently.

Then with a click the music stopped and a new voice cut in.

"Eh?" It was a deep and intimidating growl. The alien in the bucket quivered nervously and began tripping over it's words so obscenely even you could tell that he wasn't getting out a full sentence. The hairs on your arm were sticking up, it reminded you of the chuffing that came from crocodiles doing mating and territory displays. As frightening as the noise was, it wasn't the noise of a predator stalking it's prey.

"Hello, I'm currently at the Uenono Zoo. I found your subordinate collapsed and he is currently too ill to return home alone. Please dispatch someone to discretely retrieve him." You pulled the device away from the bucket and spoke calmly into it. The silence that followed made you more nervous than his initial greeting.

"Very well. I will come down myself. Human...if this is a trap-" He launched into his deep eerily threat.

"Ok, please do so in normal citizen clothing. Come in through the front entrance and make your way to the panda exhibit. If you don't know where that is you can ask a staff member, which will be wearing green uniforms. I will wait for you at the west side of the panda exhibit, which is on the way to the big cat enclosures. How should I recognize you?" You launch into your usual spiel and use a hand to push down the now protesting alien as he tries to lift himself from the bucket to pry the comms device from your hand.

"Pandas...." came the solemn voice on the device.

"Right, black and white bears indigenous to China- unique in that they are the only in their family to not eat meat." Your response is automatic, even assuming your 'Animal Presenter' voice from live shows.

"Hoo, you are mistaken. I hear that Red Pandas also sustain on bamboo and greenery." His voice has the edge of excitement that you often hear from children that relay their animal information to you. A sense of pride for their knowledge coupled by the comradery of finding a fellow animal lover.

"Hm...when you get here to pick up your friend I will tell you a secret about red pandas." You conclude, while the alien in the bucket seems to thrash and blush at the term 'friend'.

The voice lets out a haughty laugh deep in their throat, perfectly villainous in a way that makes you purse your lips to keep from snickering.

"Very well human. I shall be there shortly, pray that your 'secret' is enough to impress me."

"Ok, see you soon."

With that you tossed the device back into the bucket where your poor trembling slime frantically apologized to the voice on the other end. You stretched and left the room, with your coworker out for his honeymoon you were in charge of cleaning the panda exhibit today. Alien bodies or not, you still had a job to do and the residents of your zoo needed clean homes.

hey so some of yall may have seen the post I made a little bit ago about a parahuman OC organization document that spiraled into something larger, and well, its not quite 100% ready to be posted in full yet, but I've got enough info that I feel like is worth sharing that I'm gonna share it, ill be putting all under a cut because even though this is all truncated from the actual doc, its still pretty damn long and I don't wanna annoy people LOL

So the general idea that I was following while making this was that Toronto is a city with a fairly large cape population, but doesn't have many "top tier" villains (I.E. Lung, Skitter, Kaiser etc etc,) which made it a breeding ground for corporate teams (ignore the fact that i only have one corpo team put together right now... haha...ha... anyway)

Protectorate/Guild Capes

TAKEAWAY, a Master who creates vaguely bipedal minions who transport any person they touch into an empty pocket dimension before vanishing. Her minions look like they're made of stained glass, and are often malformed in some way, like only having one arm, or non functioning wings instead of arms.

SLUICE, a Breaker who turns into a living waterspout, and can shoot crystals that explode into a thick layer of ice and frost from her hands. Power is altered in high heat or cold, heat reduces overall effectiveness of her ice crystals, but enhances her Breaker state's durability, while cold limits her mobility but powers up her crystals.

WINGMAN, a Tinker who specializes in rocket powered flight. Not great in a straight up fight, but even just flying can be enough to give an advantage. He cannot build explosives or payloads

WARDS

ASSEMBLY, another Tinker who builds small, single function drones that automatically sync up with each other. Absolute nervous wreck and definitely not ready to take up position of team leader when her colleague graduates

EXOMORPH, a Changer whose altered form receives a random suite of adaptations depending on the environment he's fighting in. Adaptions range from gills and scales, to a prehensile lounge, to numerous independently moveable eyes. Leader of the team and a bit of a hardass.

SERAPHIM, the youngest and newest member of the Wards, a multi-trigger who can nullify a set amount of incoming force, create fragile projection arms from her body, and heat metal to scalding temperature with a touch. A runaway from a rural cult, has trouble opening up to others.

SIDEWINDER, a Mover who gains superspeed coupled with intangibility, but only in 5-7 second bursts. Jokester of the group, harbors a very unsubtle yet somehow unnoticed crush on Assembly.

CORPORATE TEAM: COSMOS UNITED

One of the first teams to set up in Toronto, used to have a strict space/star related theme, but has generally lost that as founding members died and new members came in

STAR STUNNER, leader of the team and the last living founding member, her power lets her shoot thin lasers from her fingertips that bounce off of hard surfaces and numb/paralyze organic targets

GRAVITAS, newest member and second in command, though Star Stunner is the leader of the team, Gravitas is the face, she's charismatic, attractive, smart and courageous. A flying artillery who can charge her blasts to make them stronger. Was a Protectorate member but left after a disagreement about costume design.

APASTRON, a Tinker/Shaker who builds devices that "unfold" existing rooms into larger, labyrinthine forms or shrink multiple rooms into a singular hallway. (in layman's terms, its a portable Backrooms generator) used to be a small time criminal who created hideouts and drug dens, decided to switch sides after realizing he wasn't going to be able to keep track of all the devices he'd set up for people.

ORBITAL, a Shaker who redirects projectiles and drags loose items along with them. Technically semi-retired due to a leg injury but he insists on showing up for work anyway.

HELIOSPHERE, a Blaster who creates columns of light from the sky that gradually intensify in destructive power the longer they're active. As her power causes lots of collateral damage, she doesn't see much action anymore

INDEPENDANTS

FORGEHEART, Case 53, regurgitates molten metal, and can shape it at will. A non-combatant unless forced to, he prefers to make elaborate metal sculptures and donate them to public parks, hospitals, and the like. Proportioned like an exaggerated fantasy dwarf, stout arms and legs with broad shoulders and a large potbelly, with onyx black skin and glowing veins.

VILLIANS, THE OLD GUARD

A multi-provincial group that was formed by a crime lord who saw what the Elite were doing and thought "hey that sounds like a good idea!" got a Cauldron vial and became a Thinker who analyzes the structure of other powers. (sir not appearing in this post, because he does not operate out of Toronto, and this is already way too long)

IRON KRAKEN, the head of the Toronto branch, a Changer who becomes a massive morass of metal tentacles, his power functions almost like a reverse Lung, it starts off incredibly strong, then gradually shrinks and grows weaker, requiring at least a few days before it can be used at full strength. It essentially builds up strength while not in use, then burns through it's stockpile while active. The longer he goes without using it, the stronger and longer lasting it will be

VISCERAL, Brute/Striker who enhances and transforms bladed weapons by coating them in her own blood. Blades that are saturated in her blood become larger and sprout uneven blades from their sides. Her brute power gives her powerful regeneration, but numbs her sense of pain, as a result, she's somewhat a masochist. (I do have a trigger event for her written up, but its a tad... intense so I wont tell it unless someone specifically asks.)

RONIN X, A tinker with a powered weaponry specialization. can build a lot of different things, but with the caveat that anything he builds has to be connected to a battery or generator in order to function. Has support from other Tinkers in the Old Guard. Chose his name because he thought it sounded cool.

KILLSWITCH, time delayed Blaster. Creates spheres that hover in place, before shooting off in a set direction for a set distance. Spheres annihilate all physical matter they touch. Probably the most lethal parahuman in the city.

TURNCOAT, a Master who commands a single, invisible monster minion. The minion is non human in shape, very strong and durable, and can move faster than a car.

THE LOVEBOMBERS

Less of a gang and more of a disjointed group of junkies and hedonists. Led by a trio of Masters. Not considered a significant threat, they mostly just make a nuisance of themselves and disrupt the general public

HEART NUKE, the leader of the parahumans in the group, can induce and intensify a specific emotion in someone by touching them. repeated contact intensifies the emotion further. Unbeknownst to anyone other than him, his power has a secondary affect, anyone who's emotion is heightened to a certain point will literally explode, with anyone whose caught in the blast also having the same emotion heightened.

EUPHONIC, an always on power that causes anything she says to sound reasonable to the listener, can be resisted if the suggestion is too out of character or if the listener has strong willpower. Dresses in intentionally shocking and revealing clothing.

IDOLIZER, can force any and all individuals within 12 meters of himself to pay attention to him, to the exclusion of all other tasks. dresses in flamboyant and attention grabbing outfits.

Because these systems are semi-automatic, they require a great deal of care and consideration, and maintaining a consistent environment throughout the growing season is extremely difficult and tedious. c) Hi-tech greenhouse In order to overcome some of the difficulties of medium-sized technical greenhouses, high-tech greenhouses are needed, where the entire equipment controlling environmental parameters is supported to operate automatically.

[Review] Jaws: Ultimate Predator (3DS)

Jaws? More like snores... gottem

After Jaws Unleashed I was curious about other licencees and how they delivered on the shark action that you might imagine. This 3DS effort by n-Space—veterans in the “handheld companion game” space—was accompanied by a Wii release from a one-off studio which was apparently quite goofy but oddly bloodless. This one hews closer to Unleashed but is even more grounded, to a fault.

I was bemused by a PS2 game and a 3DS game being only five years apart, but Unleashed was late on its console and Ultimate Predator quite early. They end up looking pretty similar, although the draw distance is poorer here... perhaps the 3D visuals are meant to make up for that but as usual I tried them out for two minutes and turned them off. Art direction goes a long way, as demonstrated by the blandness of the environments here. The shipwrecks and occasional corals peppering the seafloor are a nice touch, but it’s just not enough.

The setting is Amity Island, again. Diary entries in between levels that are by implication from the perspective of Richard Dreyfuss’s character from the original film set the events in the game’s release year of 2011, with a new mayor following in the footsteps of the old and a new shark out to cause more trouble. This trouble mostly consists of biting or slamming a set number of boats until they sink and eating the hapless humans, while chowing down on rival sharks and the scarce handful of other edible sea life. A couple of levels are more interesting, like when the shark has to escape a semi-aquatic research base, or explore a cave system. Then there’s boss fights with another giant squid (or its tentacles, at least), an advanced submarine, or a big Coast Guard cutter. But so much of the content is rinse and repeat.

The experimental control scheme deserves a mention. Jaws automatically swims forward at all times, which is another way to interpret the idea that sharks must keep moving to stay alive, and makes the game feel a bit like a rail shooter, albeit in all-range mode. The L button slows you for more precision while all other controls can be done either with face buttons and R, or by using the touchscreen. This has a shark jaw in the middle around a sonar minimap, with three large touch panels around it. On their own these are a dash, a dodge, and a 180˚ spin, but Jaws has more advanced moves executed by sliding between the panels in one motion (including some in common with Unleashed, such as the corkscrew and flop). The touch interface facilitates these better than the awkwardly-timed button combo windows, so a combination of both works best. Neither are terribly responsive though and failing them in a pressure situation with lots of harpoons and torpedoes coming at you can be frustrating.

I just wanted the game to get a lot weirder. A realistic shark attack simulator isn’t done much justice by the underpowered 3DS, especially when it’s as barebones as this.
