so here's the thing
i've seen a bunch of people say on twitter and stuff how... ed's behavior is very abusive and his anger is dangerous and he isn't romantic lead material because of it
and i get where they're coming from
but to me the main issue isn't putting ed in the position of a romantic lead, but not crafting the narrative around his characterization so that it allows for a spicy romantic pirates-in-love narrative instead of...whatever this is.
i'm going to try and explain this. idk if i'll do well but i'll try
the way she show presents stede is as an innocent baby who isn't really equipped for pirate life. he goes into a fugue/disassociative state whenever there's any real violence, apparently, and needs protecting by other characters when things get too rough - for example when ed is telling ned lowe not to take the poker to stede.
that's fine! it's honestly adorable to see a masc character being so soft around the edges and being protected by other characters this way.
(i'm not going to touch on stede's... eh... not great characterization this season rn)
then there's izzy, who is shown as a bit violent, a bit rough around the edges. he's more likely to draw a sword or throw a punch or hit someone with a chair or take a punch like a champ. violence is just part of life for him and that's okay, it just Is, from small things like smacking stede on the ass to bigger things like being wall slammed, it's not all that big or bad for violence to happen around and with him, he tends to give as good as he gets (there's some nuance here but i'm talking the macro themes not the micro of what izzy does vs is done to him)
and finally there's ed
ed is presented as violent (stabbing knives at guys, telling fang to use the snail fork etc) and used to a life of violence, and then in season 2 he's presented as really violent, his anger coming out in dangerous and terrifying ways
and frankly, i'd be super into it if he and izzy were the main ship and that twisted dynamic from the first two episodes of s2 was explored and fleshed out into something deeper
friends to enemies to lovers who fight and fuck. angry pirates who lay hands on each other, who break the whole ship with each other in the heat of passion.
except instead, s2 gives us... abuse. it gives us izzy cringing and lowering his head and trying to protect the kids crew from ed's angry outbursts.
so when stede comes back and he's still soft around the edges and ed headbutts him and it's deliberate, it's... not a great look, and the vibes are a bit skewed
if stede fought back, if when ed struck out at him he struck back, if they fought rather than it being one-sided, if it was friends to enemies to lovers and not presented as healthy, but maybe they can work their way there, who knows, maybe even more like anne bonnie and mary read because hey, they were doing something very similar?
except they were both into it. they were both enjoying the fighting and the fucking and the burning down the house.
stede's not enjoying it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i cannot describe how much i hate this sequence just because of the way stede flinches
anne and mary don't!! mary jumps at the unexpected bang but she doesnt flinch, she doesn't cover her face like she thinks the vase will be coming for her not the wall and anne? looks so into it
and the thing is that in real life, no, you don't want to date someone who throws shit around, or headbutts you
but in fiction when it's two fucked up people doing this shit together like anne and mary?
that can be fun.
but instead what we've been given is stede flinching and apologizing to ed and then all of ed's...what, semi-redemption???? is done away from the other collection of people he abused, and then he spends some time on a fishing boat wearing a dog collar and everything is fine because he's good now and won't be doing anything bad ever again
and it's just... poor writing. the vibes are rancid.
i spent a really big chunk of time between s1 and s2 defending ed. i kept saying how what he did to izzy by making him eat his toe wasn't abuse, it was a one-off and abuse isn't a one-off thing it's a pattern, and then s2 made it a pattern.
explicitly. explicitly a pattern.
not just one toe but three.
jim saying "you're in an unhealthy relationship with blackbeard"
and all ed offered izzy was a "sorry about your leg" which might've been fine if izzy survived and they could work on this more, but instead that's all the apology and closure izzy will ever get
ed threw a chair and a vase and made stede flinch in fear and stede was right to do that. what part of any of this implies this will never happen again? that stede won't press the wrong button at some point and be on the receiving end? none of it
and if we'd been presented with a s2 stede bonnet who could handle himself and stand up for himself and fight back, then maybe i could imagine that turning into a weird sexy fucked up anne/mary like thing and maybe that could be why they put that episode in, but instead it feels like that episode was going, "look, see, ed's violence is fine because these two are fine with it with each other"
but stede isn't
ed and izzy or ed and stede in an unhealthy battle of a relationship could be such a fun, interesting and downright sexy thing to watch unfold on tv, and could honestly end somewhere far more down the chill end of the spectrum, but that's not what we've been given here
i cannot argue that ed isn't an abuser anymore, and not just of izzy but of the whole crew. he terrified frenchie.
it's not good writing to try and lean into the idea that ed and the pirates are violent and live a life of violence, so it's okay that ed's been violent, while simultaneously presenting his violence as traumatic and abusive, and then less than three episodes later saying oh it's fine now, he's just a little meow meow who can do no wrong, see?
especially considering they had him murdering people at the end of the season. and sure, you can say the english are just cannon fodder and they dont 'count', but they did before. ed explicitly did not kill before, and that included the english, or the spanish, or anyone else. so either they count or they don't, but flipping him on a dime makes no sense.
ALSO
having ed be the son of an abusive man who threw plates at his mother and made her cringe and then having ed kill his father to protect his mother and then a season later having ed become the kind of man who throws chairs and vases and makes his love interest cringe is, again, not bloody optimal
i want to say again i dont CARE about tv always presenting healthy relationships or tv always giving us aspirational goals. i want messy fucked up dynamics and terrible people making terrible choices, and still, to this day, i fucking love ed teach. i would honestly love to have seen them continue with ed's darkness and bring stede into it and see where they went with that, to have stede kill ned lowe and not just bury his feelings in ed but get off on it, enjoy the violence, and see where that led, but no
and so instead all we end up with is a protagonist who is being set up for a lifetime of abuse from an intimate partner, and a romantic lead who abuses his love interests (and yes. izzy is a love interest, he is set up like one and positioned like one and treated like one), frightens his love interests with his violence, is erratic and most of all inconsistently written. he was so sorry about scaring fang as though he hadn't been deliberately terrifying the whole crew for fuck knows how long? what?!
the whole fandom has spent so long saying, "no no, i know stede bonnet irl was a slave owner, but ofmd is using the names and not any real piracy, it's more disney piracy, you know? so that kind of stuff doesnt exist!" and then they flipped around and went "blackbeard is blackbeard and so he is evil and does all these horrible things" and i dont know how to rationalize the two sides of that because it feels so out of place
i'm getting rambly, this isnt a particularly well constructed thought process, i just feel like we were robbed both of a toxic, violent relationship that could be fun to see explored on tv and a soft and sweet love story between two middle aged men exploring their first loves in one fell swoop and there's no way for s3 to bring either of those things back because they got utterly torpedoed by making ed a horrible person
ugh

HEARTSTEEL KAYN: HEADCANONS ♡ TW : Drug mentions/Usage ♡ TW: Food mentions ♡ No pairings/ not reader-insert
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
KAYN
Ever since joining Heartsteel, Kayn's 'Rhaast' outbursts have lessened in frequency and severity. Of course, his alter-ego makes regular appearances, but being with a group that encourages and accepts him rather than holds him back and tries to get him under control has made it so that Kayn feels less need to express his feelings in such an explosive, reckless way. Of course, he'll never admit that his newfound friends are the reason for his recent (very, VERY slight) stability.
Kayn is extremely choosy with his jewelry. He fronts like he doesn't want to wear "cheap, lame shit"—but actually, he just reacts to most metals. If he doesn't check to make sure his earrings are hypoallergenic, he ends up with a massive rash. Why the excuse? He is NOT about to admit he has sensitive skin.
Probably not a surprise, but Kayn breaks his phone CONSTANTLY. With all his reckless antics, it's rare for a new phone to last him more than a few months. The silver lining is that he at least has his emergency contacts (the Heartsteel members, of course) memorized from entering them into his contacts list so often.
Kayn also has a burner phone he uses for Rhaast.
Maybe you'd expect Kayn to have an enormous rager for his birthday, but the truth is, he doesn't actually like that many people. Instead he invites a handful of his actual friends to the shared Heartsteel apartment for a joint Halloween/birthday party. Costumes mandatory, noise complaints expected. Kayn will tell you to your face if he thinks your costume is stupid.
Kayn's got a lucky guitar pick. Somehow, he’s never lost it.
Wherever Kayn goes, property damage often follows. For Heartsteel's sake, he's cleaned up his act a tiny bit, mostly because he's scared of respects Yone, who gets pissed whenever Kayn breaks too much shit. But come on, you can't deny a man all of life's simple pleasures—you gotta let him graffiti the side of a water tower every once in awhile, or blow up the occasional car.
Notorious for social media rampages, Kayn's been banned from using the Heartsteel twitter. (The last straw was him using the account to threaten a member of his old band. Apparently, Alune didn't think "I'LL FUKKIN DOXX U LOL" an appropriate use of the official twitter account.) He's still semi-active on his personal accounts, but only in sporadic bursts.
Kayn knows how to tie a knot in a cherry stem with his tongue.
Like most rockstars, Kayn dabbles in cocaine. His drug use is pretty limited, though, mostly because he doesn't really need drugs to be high-energy and unhinged. When clips of his erratic behavior surface or Kayn goes on a twitter rampage, newer fans often speculate about Kayn being on drugs. Veteran Heartbeats know that he’s just Like That, though.
Kayn says he doesn't have a favorite bandmate. (He does. It's Ezreal.)
A lot of the time, Kayn has to be reminded to eat. When he's busy writing songs or hanging out with the band, stopping for a bite never crosses his mind. Thankfully, Sett's on top of his meal schedule (gotta hit those macros!) so he'll remind Kayn that lunch is a Thing That Exists.
Kayn spends a ridiculous amount of time on his nails. Cuticles? Trimmed. Polish? Immaculate, and always black or burgundy. Topcoat? Applied and glass-smooth. Of course he'll deny that his nail routine is so precise because it doesn't fit his devil-may-care image, but come on. Chipped OPI and hangnails? Couldn't be him.
Kayn hates nothing more than the passenger seat. Let him drive! Yes, he knows that he's gotten two speeding tickets in the past three months. Yes, he's completely aware that K'sante got violently carsick the last time Kayn drove everyone to Taco Bell. He does not care. He will NEVER care. Driving is fun and driving recklessly is really fun.
You won't catch Kayn in a salon. He dyes and cuts his own hair in his bathroom. (How is it still so perfect?!)
Kayn is way too eager to help Aphelios pull pranks on people. Unfortunately, he can dish it out, but he can't take it. A prank on Kayn has a 50/50 chance of putting him in a sour, bitchy mood for the next hour.
Of all the band members, Kayn's the one that spends the most time alone. He doesn't have many friends outside Heartsteel. And, even though he knows his band has his back and he appreciates them, he needs frequent social breaks.
Kayn's the ultimate night owl. It's rare for him to go to bed before 4 AM. Despite this, he's always up before ten. Maybe it's Yone's rigorous recording schedule that gets him up. Maybe he's so high-energy, his body can't stand staying still for more than six hours. Maybe, though, it's just all the Monster energy drinks.
Consider it a sign that he likes you if Kayn spam-texts you. If he doesn't, he won't even bother responding. (But, if he suddenly stops texting you out of the blue? Don't worry. He probably broke his phone. Again.)

Terrible Ideas for Video Games:
—visual novel that's just an actual novel, greatly abridged; the choices you make determine which parts get edited out. You can consciously have Anna Karenina avoid all unpleasantness with Vronsky, in which case the last scene of their relationship is them embracing, planning their trip out to the country. You can choose to have her throw herself under the train, or not; if not, all mention of suicide is omitted and she simply falls beneath the wheels out of nowhere in a tragic twist ending. You could, instead, play as Levin, and ignore Anna's story completely. By playing through the game enough times, you might eventually reconstruct the original text.
—intricately-branching storygame where the gameplay is the most generic first-person shooter imaginable, funneling you down perfectly linear corridors to mow down wave after wave of foes. You are never given the explicit opportunity to make a choice, instead the plot plays out based on a host of invisibly-tracked statistics: your accuracy, most-used weapons, damage taken, whether or not you happened to be looking in the right direction when a scripted sequence was triggered, etc. The consequences of your actions are distant and obscured, some real butterfly effect bullshit. For example: an injured comrade ends up dying, convalescing, or making a full recovery, depending on how many medkits you ended up using three missions prior. The game tells you none of this, it just plays the relevant cutscene and then plunks you down in the next mission. Two players could experience two entirely different stories, without having the slightest inkling that there was any other way the game could have gone.
—colony management sim where you have to control each colonist individually, a impossible feat of micromanagement with a population of hundreds. The moment you stop controlling someone they will immediately wander off to do their own thing, based on their own semi-randomly generated skills and traits. The thing is: every colonist wants the colony to succeed, and so if left to their own devices they are guaranteed to build a basic functioning colony. How long it lasts is up to RNG. You can switch instantly from character to character, interfering in their lives, choosing where and when to intervene with your god-like perspective, and whether the colony survives or thrives or fails completely may or may not have anything to do with you at all.
—game where leveling up means greater automation. You start out with QWOP-style controls, having to flail your character around wildly just to throw a punch. The control scheme gradually refines until you can reliably throw a punch through a series of commands, and eventually you unlock a dedicated punch button. You unlock combos, then hotkeys and macros, then autocast on cooldown. Your character technically never gets any more powerful - you could do all of this from the beginning, given enough skill - it just becomes easier to execute. The final level is an autobattler, where you just sit back and watch it happen. (Maybe this idea would be better done in reverse, not sure.)

Let's talk Energy Mix
Tumblr media
Let me talk about the energy mix for a moment - because I feel a lot of people are very unsure, how a renewable energy grid would work in practice.
So, let me get out my electrician gear and go very quickly through the different energy types that we would probably have within a Solarpunk world or something along the line. Or rather: What we might have in the future, if our governments actually fucking cared to go carbonfree.
Photovoltaic (aka Solar). Now, let me make one thing clear: Technically Photovoltaic and Solar are two different things. Photovoltaic uses certain materials that can build electricity when they interact with Photons, while Solar uses the sun's heat radiation. What most people think of as "Solarpower" is photovoltaic. This technology has made a lot of advances recently, making the panels so much more efficient than they were only a few years ago. By now photovoltaic roof tiles can actually provide enough energy for the house even during cloudy days and even further up north. Of course they cannot create enough energy during the night. While production is not 0, it is by far not enough.
Wind turbines. Currently wind turbines are making up a lot of the renewable energy mix in many countries, like my own (Germany). And for good reason. They are so darn efficient. Especially off-shore energy. While they are right now not useful for personal energy production (because turbines are fucking loud up close - only up close), they are really good at keeping the grid fed. Maybe just a bit too good.
Other forms of Wind Power. I really do not want to go too deeply into this topic. But there are currently also other forms of wind powered generators being researched. Including some that could be put onto houses. (If you want me to gover those more, just send me an ask.)
Hydro Power. Now Hydro Power, so water based power generation, has two big kinds of being used. One is by channeling the power of rivers through a generator - the other is as the currently simplest form of energy storage: If you have too much energy in your grid at any given time, pump water into a reservoir and if you need that power again, let it go through a generator. Please note though: Environmentally Hydro Power is definitely the kind of renewable power with the worst environmental impact.
Other forms of water based power generation: Currently we are experimenting a lot with getting power from the ocean. For example through tidal generators or wave generators. So far, though, these methods are only experiments, not fit for large scale production.
Geothermal Power. In a lot of areas with Geothermal activity we can also use the heat of the earth to create steam, which we then can use to power generators as well. This is especially handy in places like Iceland, that are geothermically very active, but also do not get a lot of sun half of the year and are not ideally suited for wind power.
One thing that should be noted is, that very probably we are still gonna need nuclear power as an emergency tool.
One thing that definitely needs to change, though, is how we build our energy grids. Currently we are relying a lot on macro grids, that is grids, where a few central power plants generate all the power for a large area. This does not work out well currently, based on the fact that a lot of renewables work best, if you have smaller, further distributed power plants.
This creates the need for micro grids, that are also better suited to just... Not create large scale blackouts, as the US experiences them semi-frequently.
Again, if you want me to talk more about that, I can totally do, just... send me a message.
But what you really do not need to be concerned about is the entire idea of "what do we do at night"? We have ways to deal with that. Even now. Let alone in 10 years. This area of science is currently really moving forward in long strides!

🌶️ whats the Hot Take on fire emblem or ffxiv!!
Oh boy. I'll go with Fire Emblem since I've played it more recently. Let me just put on this metaphorical beekeepers suit before I take a swing at this particular hornet's nest.
*zips*
Azure Moon is, inherently, a tragedy, and of the various endings, the one that is the bleakest for the over all future of Fodlan. On a smaller scale level, all the characters that we personally care about are going to be fine by the end of Azure Moon (presuming you where playing on casual and/or didn't let your favs die in the war). On a macro scale, none of the cycles that lead things to fall apart in the first place are fundamentally changed in any way. The systems that lead to the misery/issues of most of the cast are still in place.
Byleth has replaced Rhea as Archbishop, and thus as the semi-divine shadow ruler of Fodlan, and Dimitri has become Wilhelm 2.0- the mortal companion and figure head of said semi-divine shadow ruler, who unites all of Fodlan beneath the control of the Kingdom and Church. The Agarthans meanwhile remain unexposed and plotting in secret. Their's no hint that the Church is going to reform and stop it's policy of censoring and altering history to suit it's political agenda, or meddling in the affairs of the governments of Fodlan at whim or need. And their is really no reason to believe that in another few hundred years the cycle wont repeat itself as the pressure from all the cracks and flaws in the system once again becomes unbearable.
It's telling to me that Edelgard in Verdant Wind more or less accepts her fate when Claude and Byleth have her cornered. She tells them outright that the only way forward is to unite all of Fodlan and sieze the future, and they can only do that if they kill her. But in Azure Moon she resists past the point of all reason, becoming the Hegemon in her efforts to defeat Byleth and Dimitri, and using her last breath to try and cut Dimitri down with her dagger. And that's because deep down, she knows that Dimitri lacks the will and the courage to break the cycle. Claude, is a reformer, a visionary who wants a better future and wont stop until he has the truth. Dimitri even after everything he's been through is still a servant of the past, and still bound by it. So she refuses to yield to the bitter end, to give up her dream of a better future no matter what.

I've never really been one to share "Christmas Hauls" or anything like that, since it's always felt a bit strange to me to brag about Christmas gifts, but I did get one that I absolutely feel the need to share here! After many months of very un-subtle hints to my parents, they got me this book on identifying mushrooms in BC! I've always loved taking pictures of mushrooms, so having a way to identify them seems so exciting and fun!
Tumblr media
So, after getting this lovely Christmas present, my dad and I went out mushroom hunting the other day. Even just walking through the woods near our house, we saw so many cool mushrooms that we probably would have overlooked had we not specifically been looking for them. So, without further ado, some fun mushroom pics :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A bit about mushroom identifying below ⬇️
While my dad and I had a lot of fun looking for mushrooms, we ended up having a really hard time identifying them, even with the help of the book. To be fair, my dad and I are both beginners here, with very little mushroom knowledge. Like anything else, I'm assuming it will get easier the more I practice identifying with the book and the more I learn about mushrooms, but it wasn't as easy off the bat as I had hoped. A lot of the mushrooms we found didn't quite match up with any examples in the book, or matched up with more than one, so it was really hard to be certain. If anyone here knows more about mushrooms of the Pacific North West than I do, please feel free to hop in and tell me what I've found!
The only one I am semi-confident with is that the orange jelly I found is some type of Witch's Butter. I did the mandatory "poke with a stick" test on this and it was definitely the right gooey texture. I've seen lots of people talk about Witch's Butter on tiktok, so I had some familiarity with this one already.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also think the white jelly one may have been the Spirit Gummy Bear. It looks a little bit different than the photo, as it seems to have less of a stem, but we did find other ones of this mushroom nearby that looked a bit closer to the reference image. But, still, not sure. I was mainly going off of texture for this, as it had the same translucency as the reference image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other than those two, the rest have been challenging as they look similar to multiple mushrooms in the book. The veined one (bottom left) may be a chanterelle of some kind, probably a white chanterelle, but again, they didn't look exactly like the book example, so that would just be a guess. Another thing that made identification difficult is that a lot of the mushrooms we found in the book stated they grew only in late summer and autumn, which it currently is not. Perhaps this is a climate change thing? Or maybe we were just looking at the wrong mushrooms? Who knows?
The small one on the top right seems like it is a bonnet of some kind, but whether it is a lilac bonnet, bluefoot bonnet, or brown bonnet is hard to say. The colouring seems similar to the lilac bonnet shown in the book, but the shape seems closer to the bluefoot bonnet.
The white one on the top left is the most challenging for me, as it is the most generic mushroom I think I've ever seen. I mean... if you asked me to think of a mushroom, that is probably what I would think of. It resembles quite a few different species in the book, so if anyone has any input or knowledge to share, it would be much appreciated.
So, yeah! For a first time out mushroom hunting (or rather, mushroom spotting, as we didn't pick any) it was a lot of fun, and a surprising challenge. We saw around 15 different types of mushrooms, and could confidently name none of them. But I did have a lovely time out in the woods taking pictures. I took WAY more pictures than I had to show here, but my camera's auto focus was fighting me a little bit. I don't shoot macro very often, so I suppose I'm a bit out of practice. Hopefully for the next time I go mushroom spotting, I'll be better both at identifying the mushrooms, as well as taking pictures of them. Until next time!

Hello! So I started following you because of your wonderful jjk stories but am curious;
In all your WIPs, do they all juggle canon? Or are there a few fantasy types like werewolf!yuuji and vampire!gojo or No-Curses!AU or Medieval-Kingdoms!AU?
Mer!AU? Yokai!AU? Magic-Schoolbus!AU? Superhero!AU? (tryna think of all the different AUs I can) daemon!AU? warlock!AU? Steven-Universe-fusion!AU? Soul-Eater!AU?
Admittingly so much potential but I know there are authors who like to use Canon more than bringing totally new elements.
Thank you, anon 💗
I am indeed a canon juggler. Canon Frankenstein even.
Primarily that is. I do dip into full-on AUs, but my main preference is for canon divergence, plus other types of canon-based AUs like role reversal or time travel. Sometimes, I introduce new elements into canon—like somebody being a vampire in a setting that's otherwise adherent to canon or omegaverse set within canonverse. This tends to be the case for me across fandoms; the only exception I can think of is Yuri on Ice, and that's because I wasn't very confident about handling the canon setting (sports aspects that were a little more grounded in reality than your typical sports anime).
But, like I said, I do dabble in non-canon AUs. They just tend to be a tiny proportion of my total. This ask made me curious enough to go and count. At present, I have 88 plot bunniesdemons, of which 15 are fully written and 2 are WIPs. Those 17 are all canon-based. Of the rest, we have the following non-canon AUs (consider them to have every content warning you can think of):
Modern AU where Gojou is Megumi's adoptive father and Yuuji is Megumi's highschool best friend, and he comes to regret introducing Yuuji and Gojou (aka DILF Gojou AU, where he's a decade older than canon and Yuuji's his canon age).
Modern AU where Gojou used to be Yuuji's babysitter, took some liberties and kickstarted a less-than-healthy sexual awakening, and the two meeting again when Yuuji's a teen, this time with Gojou as his bodyguard.
Fantasy AU where Gojou and Sukuna are both gods and Yuuji's a dragon-human hybrid who semi-accidentally tumbles into both their beds, separately. Pure monsterfucking pornfest.
Modern AU where Gojou's a rich teen brat, Yuuji's his bodyguard, and Gojou's attempts at "seducing" Yuuji devolve predictably into some D/s fuckery.
Fantasy AU where Gojou's the devil and Nanami's the angel on Yuuji's shoulders, in a world where that's the norm. Fucking said devils and angels isn't so common, but Yuuji's adventurous that way. Macro/micro mostly.
Modern reincarnation AU where Sukuna's reborn as Yuuji's younger brother, and it takes everything Yuuji has not to smother him in his bed; it escalates into something very different. Then Gojou's thrown into the mix as Yuuji's high school upperclassman.
Fate-based AU with a Holy Grail War–Culling Games fusion where Yuuji summons Gojou, it turns out to be a weird causality loop, and Yuuji spends the bulk of his life trying to figure it out, summoning a Gojou who doesn't remember him over and over and over.
Youkai AU drawing on Natsume Yuujinchou for the vibes—something slow, quiet, and warm. Yuuji moves into a rundown mountain house in a sleepy village and makes friends he probably shouldn't.
That's it! A total of 8 out of 88. That's a far lower number than I expected, honestly. Some of the canon AUs are heavily divergent but still solidly set in canon as we know it. I guess I really love JJK's sandbox.
The shared ideas @nearalways and I develop together have a lot more non-canon AUs in them, but most of those won't be written by either of us.

Ok so @maleficentmrsofallevil Didn’t send me these so I could grumph over how much I hate polypropylene hair.
Tumblr media
I have not opened Frankie, yet (omg they’re so cute.....).
Keeping in mind people have said that the upper torso joint becomes loose after beheading, hold it like this:
Tumblr media
Don’t pull from the lower torso. Won’t loosen your joint this way.
Anyway.
Handy Dandy Endoscope...
Tumblr media
It’s a macro lens so kind of hard to see if you’re not right up on something, but!
No glue in Clawdeen.
Tumblr media
This pattern inside the head is consistent with ablation/melting the ends to keep the hair in place.
Tumblr media
It’s patchy and inconsistent. Plugs that didn’t spread out much when melted are likely to come out.
She had minimal hair drop on her first brushout, but you saw how it did...
Tumblr media
Did you see that her little top knot popped off when I brushed it the first stroke? It did.
NOT ONLY is poly the Bad Texture hair, but it was super oily.
Ew. I’ve washed it and am now conditioning it. Then I’ll see if I can get it semi-not-the most disgusting thing I’ve had to touch in a while.
Pretty ok with the body and face, though. Her head, lower arms, and lower legs are a different color than the rest of her body.

introducing fast food proportion lists!
so i know that what’s hard with many people dieting, trying to lose weight, or even doing one meal a day, is what to do when you wanna get fast food!!! so literally at 4am lol i used to help of the app cheat day to create differently but all healthy proportioned meals.
according to myfitnesspal (an app i live by), a well balanced meal requires 50% carbs, 30% fat, and 20% protein. the first restaurant i’ve done is mcdonald’s because i go there most frequently. please keep in mind for these proportions you MUST order the item exactly as it comes/is titled in the list! i’m not sure how much or little it’ll effect the proportions if you take individual ingredients off (ex. big mac no pickles) it might change the stats. without further ado here is the list <3
mcdonald’s
1: big mac (540 cals, 252fat, 100 protein, 180carbs) + medium coke (210 cals 56 carbs) = 750 cals, 390 carbs, 252 fat, 100 protein
- less than 1k cals
- perfect balanced meal
- 52% carbs, 35% fat, 13% protein
2: cheeseburger (300 cals, 132 carbs, 108 fat, 60 protein) + medium fries (380 cals, 196 carbs, 162 fat, 20 protein) = 680 cals, 328 carbs, 270 fat, 80 protein
- less than 1k cals
- roughly balanced meal
- 48% carbs, 30% fat, 12% protein
3: premium southwest salad with grilled chicken (350 cals, 108 carbs, 99 fat, 148 protein) + plain sundae (210 cals, 128 carbs, 54 fat, 24 protein) = 560 cals, 236 carb, 153 fat, 172 protein
- 5kish cals or less
- protein focused meal
- 43% carbs, 27% fat, 30% protein
4: premium bacon ranch salad with grilled chicken (320 cals, 36 carbs, 126 fat, 168 protein) + large vanilla cone (300 cals, 192 carbs, 72 fat, 32 protein) = 620 cals, 228 carbs, 198 fat, 200 protein
- less than 1k cals
- equally macro proportioned meal
- 36% carbs, 32% fat, 32% protein
5: cheeseburger (300 cals, 132 carbs, 108 fat, 60 protein) + snack size oreo mcflurry (340 cals, 212 carbs, 99 fat, 32 protein) = 649 cals, 344 carbs, 207 fat, 92 protein
*can switch for hamburger and will be mostly same from percentage proportions!
- less thank 1k cals
- semi balanced meal
- 53% carbs, 32% fat, 15% protein
6: steak egg and cheese bagel with slivered onions (620cals, 216 carbs, 270 fat, 128 protein) + medium coke (210 cals 56 carbs) = 830 cals, 272 carbs, 270 fat, 128 protein
*can switch out for large coke for almost exact same percentage proportions (+80 cals)
- less than 1k cals
- semi balanced meal
- 41% carbs, 40% fat, 19% protein
7: chicken sausage mcmuffin (290 cals, 116 carbs, 108 fat, 64 protein) + medium coke (210 cals 56 carbs) = 500 cals, 172 carbs, 108 fat, 64 protein
- 5k cals or less
- perfectly balanced meal
- 50% carbs, 31% fat, 19% protein
please note carbs, fats, and proteins are measured in grams! there are many many more combinations i saw possibilities for and i’m also working on curating full meals (entree side & drink). if there’s a certain item on mcdonald’s menu (ex. nuggets) that you’d like me to make into a balanced meal, or drinks you’d like me to replace or switch out please let me know - wonder if you can tell coke is my fav drink! there’s are also a few menu items that are balanced by themselves, but for that you can check on cheat day.
next up; burger king (recommend restaurants below!)

Do you have any suggestions for an entry-level macro setup for someone with a Nikon DSLR? Ideally something less than a few hundred dollars?
So there's lots of options for entry level macro!
Macro filters - These just screw on to the front of your lens and give you extra magnification. They're how I got started. Lots of options and brands here, I'd recommend getting a larger one and then a stop down kit (typically around $20-30) so they can be used on all of your lenses
Raynox 250 - A clip on macro filter. I use this on my macro lens to do super macros. I like it because unlike tubes I can still auto focus well (when doing macros you typically manual focus most of the time but I use this with moving bugs where auto focus is easier/better)
Various macro lenses. I'm assuming you're shooting with a crop sensor (dx) camera. Nikon makes a 40mm and an 85mm macro lens that are dx. There's also the 60mm 2.8, 105mm 2.8, and the 200 f4 (very expensive and big and bulky but the queen of macro). There's older versions of the 60mm that are just as good and cheaper than the newer model. Always check craigslist and marketplace, you can typically haggle for a lower price and this lets you try out the lens. Sigma also makes some great macro lenses. Nikon lenses are really cheap right now because everyone is jumping to mirrorless
35mm 1.8 dx - Not a true macro lens but does focus semi close. This was my go to lens on my D7100
Laowa lenses - these are fully manual lenses but they allow for greater than 1:1 magnification. Kind of pricy but used would be cheaper if you can find them.
Extension tubes (I use these ones). These will give you a bit of diffraction and you lose light so you'll need longer shutter speeds/better lighting but they work great. I like that these ones work with the electronics. They technically autofocus but it's crap. They work great with my D850s built in focus stack feature though.

Dromaeosaur
This was originally written on Twitter, for our old community there, so we’ve kept the original format so that it flows in its original manner. Maybe, someday in the future, we’ll rewrite it to work better in a macro format.

"Can you turn our chair around for us?" we ask Julie Caspiern, the reporter for the Fairport Fishwrapper.
We've returned to our home town since our discovery, and she contacted us shortly afterward.
It's hard to hide what we are, after all.
1/X
Julie obliges us while we needlessly explain, "It's a bit heavy now, you know. Heh."
She smiles, of course, and then moves to sit opposite us at the cafe table, pulling out a small notepad and pencil after putting our drinks down.
2/X
Just so you can visualize our perspective, the seat of the chair is just above our eye level when we're on the ground, now. But we've gotten pretty good at hopping.
You can look forward to this too, if you read our book, by the way.
3/X
We could probably make it all the way to the top of the chair back in one good jump, especially with assistance from our wings, but we might spill drinks that way. So we take two hops, using our claws on the edge of the seat for control.
4/X
She got us a napkin, like we asked.
That's going to be important later, after we've drunk some of our mocha. That kind of thing is a little messy now.
"Maybe we should start from the beginning," she suggests.
"Sure!" we chirp.
5/X
She doesn't even need to prompt us. We've worked for a newspaper before.
But we get a mouthful of mocha first, tilting our head back to swallow it, & then wipe our face with the napkin. A demonstration for the reporter.
She waits patiently.
6/X
"So, I guess, our name is the Inmara. That's, uh, 'hey, Inmara' in second person, or 'there's the Inmara' in third. We're plural. Some people call it DID, but we don't. Not for us. Anyway, they/them for pronouns, as a group," we tell her.
7/X
She takes a few simple notes and then looks up (not all that far) and asks, "And before this, you were?"
If she was interviewing us as for a trans bit, we'd be annoyed. But we expect this, this is our story.
We say, "The same, but taller."
8/X
"I mean," we add before she can ask another question, "we couldn't lay eggs before, and now we do. Like, we're pretty sure, people will be interested in that. Our book is a bit of a choose your own adventure, that way. 31 endings, though"
9/X
"Why 31?" Julie asks.
"We like giving people lots of options," we reply. "Also, the math of Fenekere is base 31 for some reason, so it just sort of lent itself to that." We shrug, "Any bigger & the cost to print the zine goes up too much."
10/X
"So, how did you discover that... Fenekere is it? How is that spelled?" she asks.
"F-E-N-E-K-E-R-E," we tell her.
She nods, "How did you learn Fenekere can do this...?" she gestures at us.
"Well," we say, bobbing our head for more mocha.
11/X
"We should probably start by telling you what Fenekere is," we tell her.
"OK!"
"First of all, it's a language we discovered in 2014 while bored at work. Like, people aren't going to believe this, but read our book and you'll see..."
12/X
"Anyway, this was right before we came out as trans, and our dysphoria was really bad, and work was getting so slow. So, some of us were poking around in our inworld," we explain. "Now, most people think that's just our imagination, but..."
13/X
"We think you can see with your own eyes that that is a gross simplification," we say, spreading our wings to show off our plumage.
She nods with a tight lipped knowing grin. "Go on," she says.
"So, our Poet finds these dragon scales..."
14/X
"Huge things! 31 of them, of course. And they're etched with these weird characters on them, and arranged in a semi circle. Fenmere found that if you look at them in order, slowly, they teach you"A Fenekere. It's pretty neat," we say.
15/X
"And this was all in your head?" Julie asks.
"No," we say, lowering our body so that we can put our chin on our foreclaws. "That's a simplification."
"Right," she says, making a note.
We do wonder how this is going to look in print.
16/X
"Anyway," we say, trying to keep this short so we can get to the good stuff. "It turns out that Fenekere is like the coding language of reality. You can use it to *change* things, including yourself. So, after experimenting with it..."
17/X
"Well," we say, thinking of another tactic. "Are you familiar with TF kink or cognitohazards?"
Julie frowns & shakes her head.
"OK, so, among a certain demographic of people, there's an intense sensitivity to, well, being something else."
18/X
"Call this demographic 'webcomic readers'. Not every one is susceptible to this, but a higher percentage are. And there are certain webcomics that get passed around. I mean, OK, we're being funny, & this is serious," we say, rethinking it.
19/X
"Look, it's not necessarily linked to any other demographic, but there are a number of people in this world who aren't really people. Not human, anyway. They just know it, and always have. And there're overlaps, but..."
20/X
"If you call it otherkin, therian, alterhuman, whatever, the key is that it is kinda its own neurotype. Whether it comes from trauma, some kind of weird evolutionary glitch, something spiritual, it doesn't matter. It's a thing," we grunt.
21/X
"And people like us have this need to feel right. It's kind of like being transgender, but not. And until now there was no way to, well, transition like this. So, instead, we've all been flocking to TF kink and cognitohazards..."
22/X
"There are these stories, often comics, that tell of someone being transformed into another kind of being, and having to learn how to be that being," we tell her. "And they get passed around. So, if you pay attention to Twitter closely..."
23/X
"If you pay attention to the right corners of Twitter, you can see it in people's profile pics. Yinglets, drekir, protogens, sergal, even D&D kobolds. You'll see them spread in waves in tweets saying 'oh no.'" We take another gulp of mocha.
24/X
"That's why they're called cognitohazards," we note. "Here's the thing. Most of the stories that get passed around involve involuntary transformation. But we're not about that. It's fun, but not right. Not good. We like consent, options."
25/X
"But!" we interrupt Julie's next question. "People are really drawn to that involuntary irreversible disaster of a transformation. It's part of what the need. Sort of takes the responsibility away. So they can say, 'too late now, oh well!'"
26/X
Julie knows what our book is about and what it can do, so she cuts to the relevant question, "So, how did you solve that? How did you give people choices, but still no choice?"
We grin in the only way a microraptor can grin.
27/X
"Well, for one, the cover of our zine does say, 'There's no turning back.' And, we're doing this interview to inform people. But, it *is* ultimately their choice to pick it up and read it when they find it," we say.
"Hmm..." she frowns.
28/X
"Do you do anything more to make sure it's informed consent, if there's no turning back?" Julie asks.
"Yes, absolutely," we tell her. "Most of the book is just informing the reader of the risks, really. It's just..."
29/X
"For the right kind of person, each drawback just makes the transformation all that much more enticing, and knowing that there's no counterspell, so to speak, (even though there is) just sort of clinches it. It works," we say.
"OK, but."
30/X
"If there is a counter spell, then how come we imply there isn't?" we ask for her.
"Yeah."
"Well, it's simple, really," we tell her, winking. "Once you've become a dromaeosaur, you don't *want* to go back. It's just better this way."31/31

What if Nep was able to write fanfics, but what ever she wrote down in them made it happen to the people she’s writing about?
And she gets REALLY kinky with it.
Canonically semi-plausible! Heart stuff is all about emotions and stuff so it wouldn't be surprising if her emotions are so ridiculously potent that they cause reality to alter on a slightly macro scale
Imagine workshopping a fic in-chat with nep herself and everything she's writing is actively happening before your very eyes because she's REALLY getting into it and stuff
Would be wild

I never really keep track of the random ass projects i have and make, so maybe my tumble blog is a decent place to start
StreamPi Streamdeck
In August 2023 I used a Rasberry Pi and some open source software to make a macropad/Streamdeck for personal use. It has support and integration with OBS webhooks and various other things, primarily marketed towards people who make content and stream
as a tiny ass content creator who doesn't make much content, with a multitude of random tech hanging around, including a Rasberry Pi, i didn't want to shell out $150-$200 on an elgato streamdeck only to watch it be phased out and no longer supported
$72 for the screen, and $12 for the original case, and an afternoon of work installing setting up and customizing the interface and setting up the server side on my main PC , and we were up and running, a few discrepancies here and there but for the price and work I had no objections
I'm not much of a content creator, I do a little but of Vtubing on and off, and screw around with things, but even for that it was useful to have an at-hand control panel for essentials, even from day to day for work, being able to quick swap between things, setup hotkeys and macros etc, we were cooking.
I Re-shelled the setup into a more fancy case a few days ago, this case was more expensive, but in the long run its easier to use , I also pimped it out with a power switch and re-wired the insides just for fun (swapped the GPIO setup out for just power leads)
I did however have to re-install StreamPi and re-setup everything, Thats where the issues hit
StreamPi seems to be semi abandoned, its not been updated since 2022 and it's discord server and Github is silent.
StreamPi 1.0 which i used originally wasn't working due to it needing an ancient version of Java and the Rasbery Pi was acting up and didn't want to install or run it (and oracle are super anal about accessing old java for some reason) so fuck it, i installed the Beta 2.0 Snapshot, So after editing the install script to point to the 2.0 files, re-setting up java forgetting to backup all my configs from 1.0 we were back to starting again
after setting up a custom theme again with some basic CSS, the project was ready to re-do,
even though Streampi is a little big clunky and semi abandoned, its still a great bit of software, and if you want a streamdeck without the price tag and an afternoon of tinkering, something like this is perfect to replace it
