This might just me being tired and dumb, but I kind of get how Ace having a more supportive family would lead to isolation? Like. People who have no family to rely on form their own, and that kind of bond can be beat by very little else. There's not only possibly shared trauma, but there's probably also a shared understanding that "we all we got". It gives a weird sense of hope to see someone else in your situation, someone who relates to you even a little bit, and you want more anything in the world for them to make it out and thrive, and you can trust that they want the same for you.
So with Ace, who's trauma (that we know about) mainly comes from association and the iverblot fights, it's a bit harder to make that bond. He (assumably) got all the love and support that he was supposed to get from his family. And yeah! Sure! He can still seek it out elsewhere! But it's a thing he already has, he already has somewhere to go at the end if the day for comfort.
This is actually a theme that I'm gonna play with in my 80s fic, Deuce is lower middle class, while Yuu is just a slightly glorified version if homeless. Ace is squarely middle class, if not upper middle, he never has to really want for anything. Not like Deuce and certainly not like Yuu.
Learning how to pinch for pennies and find deals are things that makes Aces life more convenient, but it's something that Deuce and Yuu need. And that's where the divide is.
He wants to take care of his friends (he's still in denial) more than anything, but he also feels like there's this weird line he can't cross, with him on one side and Yuu and Deuce on the other. It honestly doesn't help that Yuu has a separate, small friend group outside of him and Deuce that are all in the same "Shit is completely fucked right now but by God are we gonna make it out" boat. A boat that Ace will probably never be in. Ace loves his family and is grateful, and knows exactly how much he lucked out. But he still wants to have that bond. That "the world feels like it's ending but atleast we'll be going down together" type of bond. Comforting Yuu while they cry about not having heating in the winter will never be the same as having to suffer alongside them and know they were in this together. Trying to find the cheapest possible version of a food products with Deuce and discovering knock off brands that Ace would never imagine existing (who the hell made knock off cheerios?) Will never be the same as actually having to rely on those knock off and part time sales, and feeling a sense pride that they were able to save enough money this month that they could actually buy something nice. Ace probably won't ever be on that side of the invisible line.
He'll bring them to his side though. Ace wants to take care of them more than anything. He wants them in his life more than anything. And he'll have them. No matter what he has to do to make that happen.
Sorry if I missread your post and just dropped a huge angst bomb in your inbox! I just have thoughts and there are a lot of AceYuu and ADeuce moments in chapter three and one or two of them digs into this a little.
You didn't misread my post at all I swear we are sharing custody of a braincell because this is just *chef's kiss* exactly what I was thinking.
Having that solid middle class stability and parent's who genuinely love you and each other is nothing to be ashamed of, not that I think Ace has enough humility for that, but it does mean that he has a gap in his understanding for Deuce and especially Yuu's situation. I keep thinking about how he ended up eating those tarts because he skipped a meal over worrying about Yuu and their circumstances, he cares. He is crass and rude with it but he cares! I love how you say he'll bring them to his side of the line, that's exactly how I see him thinking about it.
Ace's isolation (in my view) seems to come from how much more he values his friendship with Yuu and Deuce over literally anyone else in the school. He'd benefit from talking to Jack and Epel more, they also have solid home lives and Jack at least I think has financially stable parents, but those guys aren't his people. For better or worse, for sickness or health, Yuu and Deuce are who he is sticking it out with. He'll never say it in game, but he really does love you both, in what way is of course up to the interpretation of the player.
but you know which one we both prefer frfr

How can I tell if I'm transitioning from a junior to a mid-level gameplay programmer?
Most of leveling up from junior to senior is about becoming more autonomous. We do this by growing our ability to recognize work that needs to be done and our ability to do that work. This is a two-step process - we start to see work we need to do, and then we figure out how to do that work. Then the cycle repeats on a larger and larger scale.
Tumblr media
Most internal indicators of growth come from self-reflection. I noticed growth when I started anticipating and pre-emptively fixing my code because I'd internalized the feedback I'd gotten from previous code reviews. I noticed growth when I would look back at my old code and see all kinds of ways I could improve it if I had the opportunity to do it again. I noticed growth when I started predicting the kind of edge cases and troublesome bits that I would have to address before I started working on the assignment.
Tumblr media
There are also external indicators that will suggest you're leveling up - if your boss starts assigning you tasks with larger scope than before or if other junior devs start asking you for advice on how to do things too, for example, it's a good indicator that your coworkers believe that your skills have improved.

situations need to stop happening to me
if you're like, kasper is posting a lot of cringe tonight i bet he went to a psychologically damaging meeting today. you are correct. someone invited me to a two day "seminar" to learn about congregational care and i was like yeah that sounds like a good tool to have in my toolkit ig. could always use more education about how to listen to people. went to the thingy and they were like. sike this is actually an entire ministry certification. no this is not clinical pastoral education but you will probably be functioning like you have that training so don't fuck up. btw this means your church can and will funnel all their congregational care through you and your team so i hope you are prepared to hear people going through the worst grief of their lives. yes you do have to create this ministry at your church because we trained you for free. do you have questions <3 MORE OF A COMMENT THAN A QUESTION BUT IS IT ETHICAL FOR ME TO BE IN THIS POSITION OF POWER WITHOUT CLINICAL TRAINING? have you prayed today <3 NO!!!!!!!! it's always so amazing how many situations i get into just by being stupid.

Meet Flops, the latest addition to my family. Now we five nonhuman children; amongst them a dog, a cat, and two turtles. Now a senior bunbun who needed to be rehomed due to unfortunate circumstances surrounding her owner.🐰
He's such a cuddle bug and gave me kisses. I have a room I want to be his room- my study. Which will hopefully be ready soon. Then he would he would have a nice large area to hop. But it depends on when living situations change. 🍀
Regardless, I will be as attentive to this rabbit, his old owner deserves that much as they are a wonderful person. Plus, of course, I love all animals and plants 🤍
Peace be with you 💜

RE: the last post about Deanna becoming a Bridge Officer...
Wasn't she technically already a bridge officer? Or is there a difference between her being a Senior Officer/Counselor who happens to be on the bridge at all times next to the captain as a senior advisor, and a Bridge Officer who does the exact same thing but gets to sit in the captains chair?
If memory recall serves me, you can be a bridge officer without taking the Captains Test or whatever it's called, including the kobiyashi maru test, bc not all officers on the bridge are eligible to sit in the captains chair should it be requested???
Like for some reason I assumed that if you were allowed to be on the bridge working and manning stations, you were a Bridge Officer... But apparently in order to be a Bridge Officer you have to complete a test for Captains, although Crusher has the Bridge Officer Status, even though she doesn't operate on the bridge...
Literally the only difference I can see between you average Officer on the Bridge and a Bridge Officer is whether or not they are eligible to sit in the captains chair once in a blue moon..
Like Deanna is a Senior Officer, With Rank, who is frequently seen doing shifts on the Bridge as an Advisor and Picard's aid in Diplomacy, and your telling me she doesn't have the title of Bridge Officer bc she didn't take an exam to sit in Picard's Seat every 3rd Tuesday of the month????
Like "Line of Command" or even "Acting Captain Eligible" would've been better maybe???

i am still so fucking pissed about my grade theme this year we're the fucking SANDLER SENIORS this fucking sucks. i hate everything.
there are so many better choices! LITERALLY THE OTHER ONE WAS SEN-YARRS LIKE PIRATES!!!!! I think the wordplay there is kind of bad but easily ammended to something like seafaring seniors! WE COULD HAVE BEEN PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and moving away from that i suggested "Spacial Sneiors" like 24 times to multiple different groups of people. SPACE THEMED!!!!! SO COOL!!!!!!
some other options off the top of my head when i first heard it- Skateboarding Seniors, Serpentine Seniors!!!!!! AND NOW WE COUDL DO SOPHISTICATED SENIORS!!!! SCHOLASTIC SENIORS! SUBTERRANEAN SENIORS!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE COULD LIVE IN LITTLE BURROWS!!!!!!!!!
anyway im super duper pissed and i hate being the sandler seniors and my dad agrees with me so im right im going to write a proposal.

eh, it doesn't really read as sanctimonious. makes sense. do you do anything in particular to develop the internal worldview of characters and how they "tick", besides writing interactions? do you keep character profiles or anything of the like? have a good day, and thanks for answering the first ask :)
okay good, it might have sounded a little "touch grass" for a minute there...
=
hmm...i don't do formal "character building exercises" or the like. even those character questions tire me out.
but yeah i keep notes. example of older notes that have little points of character development or relevant parts of them popping up per chapter, vs the overall notes above the timeline (tim and jason were harder to nail down so i needed notes vs dick):
Tumblr media
or as @rozaceous has laughed at me... tallies and excel sheets, but those are so spoilery it's not even funny, but it'll be very funny to show when we get there bc. yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
not organized like a profile, but the main drive to write is something about this character sticks out at you (if fandom-related), thus let yourself imagine whatever scenario about that character with that salient point as a start.
example: dick grayson accidental child acquisition bc he's the one nice enough for a "child" to approach + looks old enough + plausible reason to be away from oversight -> build out connection to his job, history, where he is in canon, current connections. and i didn't figure out everything since ch 1; it's like peeling an onion lol. and as long as you don't overdo what you depict, you always have room to reveal and develop more
(example, i didn't think too hard on his relationship w bruce, tim, and jason until i had to. but the room i left in how it was only about his interactions with korvin + him being someone mission focused out of necessity and habit means you don't have to constantly sadboi introspect)
(another thing is...people usually don't introspect too deep if they're decisive and take action a lot. they can't afford to. and people don't completely know themselves, so it's okay to be wrong, as long as their wrong answer leads to a logical wrong conclusion)
(or you're writing someone completely bonkers and loose, then ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but they still have their internal logic)
i balance between "lol wouldn't it be funny/sad/emotional if..." and vetting for the blorbo in question to connect it back to their canon. because the first part drives the desire to write, and the second makes the what-if have impact imo.
(you can kinda see that process happen simultaneously when i answer au what-ifs--unless something got posed where the central conceit was too far removed from the original point of the divergence)
when i don't need to iron out details i usually don't note it down, because i can always refer back to my previous bits or it's very obvious to me from the canon. if it's a difficult aspect to nail down, i take notes and keep them as an example to refer to.
i also walk a fine line between depicting idiosyncrasies vs flanderization. people are creatures of habit, right? but it's too easy to use that as a way to easily make characters distinguishable that it's like an overwrought performance rather than one of many traits in a complex individual. i keep habits in mind bc they're usually easy enough to remember by the time i'm writing out a whole thing vs note taking.
e.g. i wonder if you notice that in dick in my chapters doesn't swear much until he's under duress? he's very controlled, very practiced in keeping the mood light, such that it's just part of his internal narration.
Vs. babs, i have her more readily to be sharp and swear bc that's indicative of someone who's less outward facing on the daily compared to dick (she's only 2-3 years out from her injury and becoming oracle, and you need to imagine how someone who used to be so able as to be batgirl would feel to lose use of her legs. even if she does eventually accept her new state of being, it still sucks to say the least)
he's also an adult with a job (haha real life example), so his immediate concerns are very different from tim's as a comparison point.
=
there's not a hard formula. just take notes as you think (notepad, phone, computer), use the fun of blorbos and fandom to motivate you, and don't be afraid to revise and correct yourself. and don't let organization paralyze you (don't let perfect be the enemy of good).
uh...the easiest things for me to keep in mind are: vocab (internal and external voice), initiative (active/reactive or passive person), and mindset focus (do they introspect more or spend more time observing others)? -> and then i build out from there
and when you finally write something, read it out loud to yourself. make different voices. it's pretty easy to find when someone will say a thing vs if no one on their life would say that vs only an anime character would say that
