A big cost and concern for many seniors in the U.S. is the price of prescription drugs and other healthcare expenses—and this year, thanks to The Inflation Reduction Act, their costs may go down dramatically, especially for patients fighting cancer or heart disease.
I learned about the new benefits because my ‘Medicare birthday’ is coming up in a couple months when I turn 65. I was shocked that there were so many positive changes being made, which I never heard about on the news.
Thousands of Americans on Medicare have been paying more than $14,000 a year for blood cancer drugs, more than $10,000 a year for ovarian cancer drugs, and more than $9,000 a year for breast cancer drugs, for instance.
That all changed beginning in 2023, after the Biden administration capped out-of-pocket prescriptions at $3,500—no matter what drugs were needed. And this year, in 2024, the cap for all Medicare out-of-pocket prescriptions went down to a maximum of $2,000.
“The American people won, and Big Pharma lost,” said President Biden in September 2022, after the legislation passed. “It’s going to be a godsend to many families.”
Another crucial medical necessity, the shingles vaccine, which many seniors skip because of the cost, is now free. Shingles is a painful rash with blisters, that can be followed by chronic pain, and other complications, for which there is no cure
In 2022, more than 2 million seniors paid between $100 and $200 for that vaccine, but starting last year, Medicare prescription drug plans dropped the cost for shots down to zero.
Another victory for consumers over Big Pharma affects anyone of any age who struggles with diabetes. The cost of life-saving insulin was capped at $35 a month [for people on Medicare].
Medicare is also lowering the costs of the premium for Part B—which covers outpatient visits to your doctors. 15 million Americans will save an average of $800 per year on health insurance costs, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Last year, for the first time in history, Medicare began using the leverage power of its large patient pool to negotiate fair prices for drugs. Medicare is no longer accepting whatever drug prices that pharmaceutical companies demand.
Negotiations began on ten of the most widely used and expensive drugs.
Among the ten drugs selected for Medicare drug price negotiation were Eliquis, used by 3.7 million Americans and Jardiance and Xarelto, each used by over a million people. The ten drugs account for the highest total spending in Medicare Part D prescription plans...
How are all these cost-savings being paid for?
The government is able to pay for these benefits by making sure the biggest corporations in America are paying their fair share of federal taxes.
In 2020, for instance, dozens of American companies on the Fortune 500 list who made $40 billion in profit paid zero in federal taxes.
Starting in 2023, U.S. corporations are required to pay a minimum corporate tax of 15 percent. The Inflation Reduction Act created the CAMT, which imposed the 15% minimum tax on the adjusted financial statement income of any corporation with average income that exceeds $1 billion.
For years, Americans have decried the rising costs of health care—but in the last three years, there are plenty of positive developments.

Living w/ aromantics💚🤍🖤
So I'm staying with my grandparents and my aunt for a while, not realizing that we all have something in common. My grandparent's marriage was arranged, despite that they manage to live comfortably and even happily. My aunt on the other hand is not married, the only out of 5 siblings which can seem irregular but she has always been my biggest role model. And then there's me, they live in a quite town embedded with nature and old styled everyday objects like any typical village. The life that they have explicitly seems lonely and boring but if you just stop and look, it's actually very peaceful and healthy. Living with them has thought me that there is no one way of living, none of them has a particularly romantic life but just sitting down at the dinner table made me feel more love than any other dinner table in my family. It's so genuinely soft and caring, though not perfect. Yes the house can get suffocatingly quiet at times, but knowing that my grandparents have successfully raised 5 stable adults is enough for them to block out all the silence. We all aren't born with partners, but we all are born with family, Whether it be by blood or founded in unusual places ..

Housing Minister France-Élaine Duranceau refused to improve the "Loi Françoise David" aimed at better protecting seniors from eviction, despite amendments tabled by Québec solidaire (QS) and the Parti québécois (PQ) on Tuesday.
According to Duranceau, her bill already contains several measures to protect people from evictions, regardless of age.
In 2016, Françoise David -- then a QS MNA for Gouin -- unanimously passed the "Act to amend the Civil Code to protect the rights of senior tenants." The law prevents a landlord from evicting seniors aged 70 and over who have occupied their dwelling for at least 10 years and whose income is equivalent to or below the maximum threshold to qualify for social housing.

“Hilton has Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other health issues that have left him disabled and unable to work for years. He's covered by Medicare but his only income is federal disability benefits. Because of a shoulder injury and fibromyalgia, 64-year-old Beaty — Hilton's partner of seven years — also relies on disability benefits. Combined, their income is roughly $1,500 a month. That's no longer enough, though. Investors bought their house this year and raised the rent from $1,000 (including utilities), to $1,800 (not including utilities). That unaffordable increase has left them with no choice but to leave, they say.”
One of the implicit moral precepts of capitalism: Having a home is less important than sleazy investors making a profit.

Female reader x Nick Granowicz + The seniors
Warning:Death of a pet, fluff Nick, Fluff boys
word count: 0.3k
let me know what you guys think🤍
I am hanging out with Nick and his roommates Jay and Keaton, when my mom called me.
I left the living room to go take the call.
“Hey mom, is everything okay?” I asked.
“Oh honey, I really wish I didn’t have to tell you this” she said sadly.
“What is it?” I asked worriedly.
“Honey Felix pass away this morning” Felix was our family dog, the cutest golden retriever, my parents adopted him when I was 14, I always loved cuddling with him, I can’t believe he’s gone.
“What? No mom” I said, tearing up.
“I’m so sorry honey, but you know he loved you so much” she said softly. I started crying silently.
“Thanks for letting me know mom, I have to go”
“If you want to talk, let me know okay”
“I will.” I hung up and wiped away my tears before going back to the living room with the boys. When Nick saw me he knew something was wrong. He pulled me on top of him on the couch, and hugged me.
“What’s wrong?” he asked
“Felix is dead” I was shocked, I started to cry.
He put his hand on the back of my head and gave me a forehead kiss.
“Babe, I’m so sorry, I know you loved him so much.”
“Is there anything we can do?” Jay asked softly.
“Can we just watch a movie and eat junk food?” I asked, knowing that they are on a strict diet, but I need to eat away my feelings.
“Of course, I’ll text the other boys to come over to and tell them to bring your favourite snacks and we can have a movie day” Jay said
“As long as you don’t tell anyone we also ate junk food” Keaton joked, making me laugh. They all smiled.
“Wouldn’t think of it, thank you” I said softly.
“Anything for our team mom” Jay replied.
“I love you y/n, everything is going to be okay” Nick said softly before kissing my cheek.
“I love you and I love all of you too” I said to him and the boys.
“We love you too y/n”

CELEBRATE OUR 114 YEAR OLD
MS ELIZABETH FRANCIS
Houston, we have a celebration! At 114-years-old a Black woman living in Houston, has just become the oldest living person in America and fifth-oldest person on Earth, according to LongeviQuest and the Gerontology Research Group.
Francis became the new recordholder after California resident Edie Ceccarelli died on February 22 at 116-years-old. Among the people who live beyond the age of 110, or super centenarians, she is only “surpassed by Juan Vicente Perez Mora (Venezuela, 114), Inah Canabarro Lucas (Brazil, 115), Tomiko Itooka (Japan, 115), and Maria Branyas Moera (Spain, 116). Branyas was born several months before Ceccarelli.”
Elizabeth Francis was born in Louisiana on July 25, 1909. For context, this was shortly after William Taft’s presidential inauguration. During her lifetime, Francis has survived both World Wars, two pandemics, saw women gain the right to vote, and lived through segregation to see our nation’s first Black president.
LongeviQuest is an international organization that measures and records what it refers to as “maximum human longevity.” In a press release after her birthday last July, LongeviQuest CEO Ben Meyers stated, “Ms. Elizabeth Francis is admired around the world, both for her longevity and her approach to life…Reaching this milestone was never an aspiration for her, merely a byproduct of how she lived her life every day, doing right by her loved ones and by God. We can all learn from her example.”
Ethel Harrison, Francis’ granddaughter says that “Francis has some memory problems and is confined to her bed, but she’s mentally alert and recognizes her family.”
How did she achieve this feat? Dr. Holly Holmes, a geriatric physician, believes “Francis has done everything right when it comes to living longer…‘Things that we know we need to do like moving more, eating better, having a more plant-based diet, having social connections, avoiding loneliness and isolation.’”
Harrison echoed these sentiments, relaying how, “She tried to do things to stay healthy…Her life basically was pretty simple. She didn’t go out to parties and stuff like that. She was more of a homebody. She would go to church.” In addition, Harrison noted how her grandmother did refrain from smoking or drinking alcohol and that Francis was a regular walker up into her 90s.
But Francis has always attributed her long lifespan to God and saying what’s on her mind. “If the Good Lord gave it to you, use it. Speak your mind, don’t hold your tongue,” Francis says.
And longevity seems to be a family trait. Francis’ sister Bertha Johnson was 106-years-old when she passed away in 2011 and her father made it to 99. Per Western Mass News, “The sisters are among the sibling pairs with the oldest combined age in world history.” In addition, her daughter is 94-years-young, and Harrison who also serves as her caregiver is 68-years-old.

KEY POINTS FROM THIS ARTICLE
— Horse race presidential polling has shown some significant weaknesses for President Biden among at least a couple of key subgroups: young people and Black voters.
— However, some polls have also shown Biden doing unusually well among senior citizens.
— The oldest voters have generally voted to the right of the national vote in recent cycles, and that is probably what we should expect in 2024 as well, despite these polls.

Montreal residents 65 and older will be able to ride the bus and metro for free starting July 1.
Paratransit, commuter trains and the REM are also included in this initiative.
"The elders have mobility needs, and they rely on the STM to get around," said STM chairperson Eric Alan Caldwell.
Those living outside of Montreal will not benefit from this change.
