ummm soooo... why doesn't Geiz just kill Sougo when he had the chance??? I mean AFTER Sougo had his driver destroyed???

I mean it'd only be safe so that the Demon Overlord of Time can't be "born" again.

Buuut, I do think Oma Zi-O exists outside of time and space.

Well.... after a certain point, Geiz started liking Sougo, and no longer just saw him as "that tyrant dictator Oma Zi-O". He saw Sougo despair over what he was supposedly destined to become, trying to avert it on his own terms, trying to be a good person in spite of knowing what is in store for him.

Sougo became his best friend... No, not just his best friend. The one he wanted to create the future with.

(Yes, he actually said that. And yes, it's as gay as it sounds.)

With all that... Even the thought of killing him became a weight on Geiz's conscience. Even when Sougo himself told him he should, if there was no option left.

Also, later on, certain revelations came to light that made it clear someone else was pulling the strings- trying to ensure that Sougo would become Oma, for their own gain.

As far as "existing"... Oma Zi-O is in kind of a funny place right now. Technically, he shouldn't exist because the future that lead to his creation is now defunct. Yet, he shows up in Superhero Senki... as the Buddha from Journey to the West, for some reason. And as a separate character from Sougo, too.

So I suppose he does exist out of time and space... in that his existence is totally at the whims and convenience of whoever's writing him.

Deca-Dence – 01 (First Impressions) – A Study in Scale

Deca-Dance starts small and modest: a father on a mission to investigate artifacts; his young daughter Natsume tagging along out of a sense of adventure. It doesn’t end well for Natsume: she loses her dad and her right arm. Still, she survives, and dreams of fighting and making a difference.

Fast forward to when Natsume’s about to leave school and take on a job as a Tanker, supporting the Gears who fight monsters called Gadoll. They all live on Deca-Dence, a massive mobile fortress and humanity’s last bastion. Only she never hears back from The Power that doles out the jobs. She wanted to be a soldier, but it seems her missing arm disqualifies her.

Natsume is instead given a hard, dirty armor cleaning job under the supervision of a joyless man named Kurenai. He slaps a harness on her and pushes her off a ledge onto the sheer side of Deca-Dence. Rookies typically scrub rotten Gadoll guts and blood for five years before any kind of advancement.

While it’s gross exhausting work, Natsume eventually gets the hang of it. In both the classroom exposition scene and her working montage, Deca-Dence the show exhibits a willingness to use these methods of shorthand to deliver all the information it needs to deliver. The montage works better than the student recitation of What’s Going On mostly because it’s showing, not telling, and what it shows is very cool-looking.

Natsume eventually convinces her stoic boss to throw a welcome party for her, during which she gets tipsy and takes Kurenai to task for his fatalism. He just wants to live a relatively quiet peaceful life within the walls, and can’t see why Natsume looks at her arm stump and says to herself “More of that, please.”

The older Kurenai has clearly been worn down by his experiences, while despite suffering quite a bit of trauma of her own Natsume remains optimistic about the prospect of defeating Gadoll and living in true peace and prosperity.

At the same time, Kurenai has a pet harmless Gadoll whom Natsume names “Pipe”, and also a strange, unexplained side-job involving extracting “chips” from people when ordered to by a shadowy boss. We learn a lot this week, but there’s still a lot of mysteries to unravel; more on that later.

Eventually Deca-Dence comes afoul of a Gadoll attack party, led by an immense, Leviathan-like mega Gadoll that is larger than the fortress, surrounded by a bevy of bizarre candy-colored Gadoll small fry. They may look like Pokemon rejects but even the smallest of them are bigger and faster than humans. It’s a good thing then that the Gears use flight packs in order to increase their speed and mobility (similar to the flight packs in Youjo Senki, another Nut anime).

When the Gadoll are spotted Natsume and Kurenai are still outside, and their colleague Fennel and another maintenance guy end up falling off the side of the fortress. They fall for a very long time, accentuating the sheer scale of their home as well as the battle unfolding below.

That battle actually doesn’t seem to be going so well when Kurenai drops in with Natsume, but he grabs a flight back from one of the dead Gears and proceeds to unleash a can of whoop-ass on the lesser Gadolls, with a tethered, nauseous Natsume trailing behind him.

It’s an absolutely gonzo sequence with tons of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it details. More importantly, it (along with his side job and pet Gadoll) drive home the fact that there’s a lot more to Kurenai to sleepy maintenance work, and despite not having Natsume’s moxie, unlike her he’s ready to fight at a moment’s notice.

I can see why he wouldn’t want her getting involved in this bloody business, but I still hope she convinces him to train her, “just in case” she has to fight some Gadoll on her own someday.

From the small-scale battlefield we pull way, way back to the final clash between Deca-Dence and the gargantuan Gadoll boss. In a high-tech command center that belies the fortress’ chaotic, grungy exterior, General Minato has his crew go through a number of checks and elaborate technobabble that essentially transform the fortress into a giant mass driver cannon in the shape of a fist.

Once that fist is charged up, they wait until the Gadoll is as close as possible before firing, and boy howdy can you ever feel the impact of that. The physics of large scale masses coming into contact at ridiculous speeds, and their effect on the surrounding environment, is beautifully rendered down to the smallest spec of debris.

With the latest round of bad guys thoroughly defeated, it’s time to collect all the Gadoll meat, rest, heal, repair, and celebrate…until the next battle, and the next, and the next. You can feel Kurenai’s weariness with this business, but also understand why Natsume wants to play a meaningful role.

Instead of ending conventionally with watching the humans deal with the aftermath of the battle we see that the humans had been observed by weird trippy robots in a trippy Dr. Seuss city. I haven’t the foggiest idea what’s going on here, but I sure as shit was enticed, as it adds an entirely new layer (and scale) of surreality and mystery to the past, mostly straightforward proceedings.

Gargantua. Sidonia. Macross. Er…Chrome-Shelled Regios—I’ve always had a soft spot for anime about a group of humans aboard a massive self-sustaining vehicle in a desperate struggle for survival. Deca-Dence is no different. From the city-punching, overarching Gadoll struggle down to the smaller, cozier struggle of one spunky girl trying to carve her way in the world, to the strange intriguing mysteries and ambiguity over who is actually the aggressor in this war, Deca-Dence is a sure keeper in my book.

Vice

Míg Adam McKay ,,infótripp” stílusa a Big Shortban remekül működött, Dick Cheney valós tanmeséje kicsit összeesik alatta, de az eszméletlen színészi alakítások miatt (érdemes megnézni videointerjúkat az igazi Cheney-vel, még jobban értékeli az ember Christian Bale munkáját) és a dinamikus, pontos ritmusú vágás miatt mégiscsak érdemes megnézni a Vice-ot, és belegondolni abba, milyen szinten szomorú, hogy a mai helyzet fényében a Bush, valójában Cheney  adminisztráció igazából   egy jónak titulálható elnökség volt.

US

Dosztojevkij Hasonmása nagy hatással volt rám, így engem meg lehet venni egy doppelganger sztorival, különösen akkor, ha a kedvenc szkeccssorozatom (Key and Peele) egyik fele az író-rendező. A Tűnj el! után lehetett tudni, hogy Jordan Peele második filmje nem üthet ugyanakkorát, ez be is igazolódott, de az Us tovább erősíti a pozícióját napjaink legfantáziadúsabb műfaji filmesei közt. Elég csak kiemelni belőle azt a jelenetet, mikor Elisabeth”Szolgálólány” Mossal az NWA rapbanda Fuck The Police című számára történnek horrorisztikus dolgok.

Fájdalom és Dicsőség (Dolor y Gloria)

Pedro Almodóvar életösszegző merengése lírai visszatekintés egy művész életének fontosabb állomásaira, egyben portré a sikeres filmrendezőről, akit  a súlyos egészségügyi problémák miatt megcsap az időmúlás beismerésének szele. Antonio Banderas még sosem volt ilyen jó, ez legalább annyira érződik az ő filmjének, mint Almodóvarénak.  

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Stílusos, humoros, az utolsó kellékig korhű, teljeskörű tabló ez az 1969-es Los Angelesről és az akkori amerikai filmiparról, melyben Brad Pitt alapvetően önmagát alakítva ér el a pályája csúcsára.  Kár, hogy a végére érve nem szól többről, mint a filmek és a régi Hollywood szeretetéről.

A film zenei válogatása működőképes segítség azoknak, akik nehezen kelnek reggel, nem mintha én ilyen lennék, mások mondták.  

VOX LUX

Míg Brady Corbet első filmjétől teljesen a falhoz kenődtem (ez a Childhood of a Leader volt) a második filmje közel sem hagyott ekkora nyomokat bennem. Natalie Portman játssza (tőle szokatlan módon esetenként kissé túltolva a hisztit) az iskolai lövöldözés túlélőt, aki próbálva a lehető legtöbbet kihozni a traumájából popsztár lesz.

Élősködők

Makulátlanul kivitelezett, feszes tempójú társadalmi thriller, melyről első nézésre én meg nem mondtam volna, hogy ennyi Oscart fog nyerni, de utólag átnézve a mezőnyből tényleg ez volt a legjobb film a jelöltek közül. A távol-keleti filmekre már évek óta érdemes odafigyelni, ez pedig egy határozott figyelmeztetés azok számára, akik még nem ébredtek rá erre a tényre.

Booksmart

A Spinédzserekhez és a Superbadhez felérő, de bizonyos kritikákkal ellentétben azoktól nem egy-az egyben koppintó generációs kamaszfilm, ami gyengébb társaival ellentétben tényleg nagyon szórakoztató, nem puffogtat közhelyeket és süt róla minden egyes stábtag lelkesedése.

Late Night

Szellemes, aranyos vígjáték egy olyan világról, amiben egy főműsoridős esti Talk Showt egy nő vezethet (alapvetően akár egy sci fi-nek is be lehetne sorolni) Dame Emma Thompson pedig minden egyes alkalommal egy élmény, ha megjelenik.  

Joker  

A leghírhedtebb képregénygonosz összeházasodik a ‘70-es évek művészfilmjeinek kezeletlen elmebetegével , és Joaquin Phoenix a gyerekük. A jelenleg a földön élő egyik legtehetségesebb színész a közepes forgatókönyv ellenére is hazaviszi a csontos vállain ezt a filmet, a nevetéseit egy darabig biztosan nem feledjük el, akárcsak a méltán Oscart nyert hideglelős filmzenét.

The Laundromat

Némileg színdarabszerű, de mindenképpen nagyon szórakoztató felnőttmese szövevény a Panama-ügyekről, remek színészi alakításokkal. Steven Soderbergh pár éve azt állította, nyugdíjba vonul, az ilyen filmek miatt szerencse, hogy mégsem tartotta be az ígéretét.

The Lighthouse

Személyes kedvenc filmem tavalyról (ezzel biztosan nem vagyok egyedül) Robbert Eggers a második nagyjátékfilmjével valódi horrormesterművet alkotott, amihez a fantasztikus fekete-fehér operatőri munka és a két főszereplő színész is nagyban hozzájárul. Soha többé nem tudok úgy nézni a sirályokra ezután a film után, mint előtte.

Motherless Brooklyn  

Edward Norton ha minden igaz, 15 éven át munkálkodott azon, hogy Jonathan Lethem regényének adaptációja lehessen második író/rendezői próbálkozása, amiből összehozott végül egy olyan lassan hömpölygő krimit, amiből egyedül az ő színészi teljesítménye kiemelkedő. Illetve a filmzene még említésre méltó.

The Farewell

A tavalyi termésből a másik kedvencem ez a szívmelengető, egyben elgondolkodtató gyöngyszem, amiből manapság már nem sok készül. A nagymamát játszó színésznő minden létező díjat nyert volna egy szebb világban.  

Hustlers

Jennifer Lopez jó színésznő? Ezt nekem eddig miért nem mondta senki???? Így magamnak kellett felfedeznem a tényt, hogy Jenny From The Block egy igazi, erős jelenlét a vásznon, , és tényleg hús-vér figurát formál Ramonából, a sztriptíztáncosnőből, akinek a 2008-as gazdasági világválság idején kreatívabb módszerekhez kell folyamodnia fényűző életmódja fenntartásáért.   A kolléganője (Constance Wu) egyenrangú partnere a történetben, amely a remek forgatókönyvnek köszönhetően megtalálja a girlpowert ott, ahol első látásra nem biztos, hogy lett volna.

Midsommar

 Az utóbbi évek legjobb szakítós filmje, ami baromi jól álcázza folk horrornak magát. Műfajteremtő alkotás, aminek a különböző stílusjegyeit biztos vagyok benne, hogy fel fogom még fedezni a jövőben más rendezők filmjeiben is.

The Irishman  

Martin Scorsese nemcsak a formára, de a tartalomra is úgy tűnik, kompromisszumot kötött a Netflixszel, mivel ez a több, mint négy óra minisorozatra is simán lebontható lenne, ha Scorseseben nem élne még egy kicsit Marty, az asztmás bronxi kisfiú, aki csak lopta az időt addig amíg az apukája vagy a nagypapája nem adott neki zsebpénzt mozijegyre. Bár az Ír illeszkedik a rendező korábbi bűneposzaihoz, mint a Nagymenők vagy  Casino, de meg sem közelíti azokat  a maga”nyugdíjas” tempójában. És bár a digitális fiatalítás szerintem tök feleslegesnek bizonyul a filmben, Joe Pescit mindig öröm viszontlátni, bárhogyan is.

The Report

Míg a Vice Dick Cheney hatalmi manipulációjáról és az iraki háborúban betöltött szerepéről szólt, készült közben egy film arról is, hogy az amerikai törvényhozás hogyan próbálta eltussolni mindezt azzal, hogy a CIA iraki háborús kínzásokról szóló többezer oldalas jelentését hosszú évekig nem engedték napvilágra kerülni, sőt a jelentést író  pár fős földalatti kutatócsoportra akarták kenni az egészet. Adam Driver mellett Annette Bening képviselőnője a legemlékezetesebb karakter a filmben.

A Rainy Day in New York

Woody Allen elérte a mélypontot. Egy darabig úgy volt, hogy ez a film, akárcsak Allen memoárja, a jogi viták és a fogadott lánya által őt ért vádak miatt nem fog tudni megjelenni. Jobb lett volna úgy. Ez a film kb értékelhetetlen. Az pedig csak ront a helyzeten, hogy a 85 éves rendező filmjének két főszereplője a forgatás idején 19 éves Elle Fanning és  23 éves Selena Gomez.

Marriage Story

Noah Baumbach filmejit még akkor is élmény nézni, ha többször majdnem ugyanazt a történetet meséli el. A tintahal és a bálnában csodásan dolgozta fel a szülei válását, most pedig a sajátját próbálja feldolgozni (Jennifer Jason Leigh színésznőtől) egy nem különben fájdalmas de egyben szívmelengető filmben. Scarlett Johansson és Adam Driver pedig különböző eszköztárakkal, de ugyanolyan elhivatottsággal formálják meg a két főhőst, teljes hitelességgel, miközben a válóperes ügyvédjeikkel ugyanolyan jó párosokat alkotnak, mint házaspárosként.

JUDY  

Renée Zellweger a lelkét is kiénekli és csücsöríti a második Oscarjáért. A színész-énekeslegenda Judy Garland utolsó éveinek Wikipédia leírása filmre forgatva.  

Kisasszonyok

Amíg a pasija (Noah Baumbach) csinált egy filmet az előző nőjétől való válásáról, Greta Gerwig (terhesen) leforgatta Louisa May Alcott klasszikus regényének új filmváltozatát, amit korántsem csak egy újabb adaptációnak kell tekintenünk. Greta Gerwignek sikerül az, ami csak néhány nagyon tehetséges filmkészítőnek jön össze: teljesen a sajátjává teszi Alcott regényének történetét és szereplőit, meglátva bennük a friss, napjainkban is érvényes vonásokat, miközben semmiben sem sérti meg az eredeti alapanyagot. A színésznői pedig ugyanezzel a frissességgel és játékossággal dolgoznak, külön említésre méltó Florence Pugh, akinek köszönhetően Amy March többé nem az a March nővér, akit mindenki utál, hanem ugyanolyan összetett női karakter, mint a testvérei.

Uncut Gems

A Safdie testvérek szép csendben a Coen tesókhoz hasonló márkanévvé növik ki magukat, amit ez a legutóbbi filmjük bizonyít a legjobban. Az előzőtől, a Good Timetól is megemelkedett a vérnyomásom, de a szerencsétlen gyémántkereskedő több, mint rosszul alakuló napjától hiperventilláltam, ami leginkább Adam Sandler libabőröztetően irritáló játékának(ezt nagyon pozitívan értem most)  és az őt szorosan követő kameramozgásnak köszönhető.

Macskák

Talán a legnagyobb filmtörténeti LOL, amit eddig életemben láttam. 

The Ballad of Richard Jewell

Clint Eastwood még az 1996-os atlantai Olimpia Parkban történt robbantás során a bombát megtaláló biztonsági őrben is megtalálta a hollywoodi protagonistát, még akkor is ha a tanulság, amit leszűr a történetéből annyi, hogy fehér férfinak is nehezebb lenni a világban ha túlsúlyos és introvertált hozzá az ember.

The Jesus Rolls

Mikor az érettségi évben felfedeztem magamnak azt a mérhetetlen kúlságot és zsenialitást amit a Nagy Lebowski jelentett, az első gondolatom a végén az volt, hogy a bowlingozo Jézus megérdemelne egy saját filmet. Türelmes voltam és megkaptam a jutalmamat, John Turturro ugyanis nem bízta a véletlenre és író /rendezőként is kezébe vette a tekegolyót és az irányítást. A végeredmény egy hullámzó színvonalú film amely hangulatokban és dialógusokban erősebb, mint történetvezetésben, de ettől még szerethető.

Star Wars: Skywalker kora (2019)

Hangsúlyozottan SPOILERES gondolatok a IX. részről, az "utolsóról" a következő 10-15 évre.

Szóval ne olvass tovább, csak saját felelősségre!

(Közben belegondoltam, hogy nehéz elspoilerezni ezt a filmet, annyira kis semmilyen.)

Szóval elérkezett Skywalker kora, avagy a film, amit muszájból csináltak, nem szeretetből. És ez szinte minden aspektusából süt.

Az van, hogy két év után visszanéztem Az utolsó Jediket, és hát el kell ismernem, elég szigorú volt az első megítélésem.

Most sem lesz másképp.

Ezzel együtt tartom azt, hogy ami akkor működött (főleg Ben, Luke, Rey, Poe, vagy a finálé), az nagyon, de ami meg nem, az kaszinózás meg lószabadlábraengedés közjáték viszont a továbbtekerős kategória lett.

Ryan Johnson pár napja azt nyilatkozta, hogy a rajongóknak nem azt kell adni, amit akarnak, hanem azt, amire szükségük van. J.J. Abrams Az ébredő erővel szerintem mindkettőt teljesítette, Johnson viszont a nosztalgia letudása után a vérfrissítés felé vette az irányt, hogy aztán most meg visszalépjünk egyet.

Vagy inkább huszonhármat.

Sok problémám volt a nyolcadik résszel, de elindult egy úton, amit illett volna folytatni a folyamatos retcon helyett, főleg, amikor Kylo Ren kijelenti, hogy jah, valóban senkik voltak Rey szülei, DE...

Gyáva dolgok ezek, na.

Az ébredő erőt rajongók készítették rajongóknak. A Skywalker korát megfáradt, gúzsba kötött filmesek próbálták úgy megcsinálni, hogy a végeredmény megfeleljen az internet teóriagyártással és képkocka-elemzéssel elfoglalt népének - még akkor is, ha nekik soha semmi nem elég jó.

- Nem bírtad Rose-t? Oké, akkor két mondatnál többet nem kap.

- Nem bírtad a porgokat? Jólvan, akkor csak cameóznak (ezt speciel nem bánom), helyette berakunk egy hajszárítót cukiság faktornak.

- Hiányzott Han? Tessék, itt a szelleme!

- Luke nem olyan bölcs és erős volt, mint amilyennek elképzelted? Tessék, most olyan!

- Nem tetszett, hogy a legsötétebb órában senki sem segített az ellenállásnak? Tessék, most jönnek!

- Nem tetszett, hogy Rey egy kívülálló? Tessék, már része is a kiscsaládnak!

Ez utóbbi az igazán fájdalmas. Míg az előző rész egy optimista üzenettel zárult, az Erőt egy magasabb szintre emelte, ami bárki számára, teszem azt egy rabszolga gyerek számára is elérhető, most megint visszatértünk a vérvonalhoz.

Mert ez kell a "lezáráshoz".

Ezek a visszatáncolások teszik komolytalanná az élményt. Amíg a halál eddig egy végleges dolog volt, most olykor csak átmeneti állapot, a merészebb húzásokat pedig perceken belül visszaszívják, vagy félrelökik. A koncepció hiánya bántóan süt az összképről - ileltve dehogy, a Disney koncepciója nyilvánvaló. Szomorú, hogy pont a közvetlen folytatások félremenése kellett ahhoz, hogy a következő filmeket lassabb tempóban, remélhetőleg nagyobb odafigyeléssel gyártsák.

Éééés ezúttal nem marad el a csók, de bár ne így lett volna: én Ben és Rey kapcsolatát inkább egy mélyebb, családi kötelékként érzékeltem, Rey és Poe cívódása már inkább tűnt egy titkolt kapcsolatnak, de mintha Finn is szerelmet akart volna vallani Reynek. (Nyugalom, mindkét srác kap azért csajt maga mellé a végére. Am hova lettek a többszótagú nevek?)

Azért voltak jó dolgok is, mint Adam Driver, próbálja a lehető legtöbbet kihozni a karakteréből a gyenge forgatókönyv ellenére, de a legszappanoperásabb "fordulatoknál" érződik, hogy mennyire nehezére esik neki is ez az egész.

Amit Huxszal leműveltek, egyenesen zseniális, és Landót is jó volt látni - valakit, aki akkora élvezettel veti bele magát a buliba, mint mi az elején.

Az is pozitívum, hogy végre együtt, csapatként működik a mostani fő hármasunk.

Az igazsághoz persze hozzátartozik, hogy Carrie Fisher korai halála is megnehezítette a Skywalker kora születését, hiszen a történet egy részét az előző részekhez forgatott, de fel nem használt jeleneteihez írták. Vele együtt, megfelelő felvezetéssel valószínűleg nem tűnt volna annyira légbőlkapottnak Leia egy random ponton előbukkanó fénykardja, és az eddig említés szintjén sem felmerülő Jedi-képzése.

A sok kilógó lóláb, a már megtörtént események utólagos átírása miatt viszont nekünk a katarzis elmarad. Az eredmény nem vérlázítóan rossz, inkább "csak" unalmas, és túl sokszor megy át önmaga paródiájába ahhoz, hogy komolyan lehessen venni. J.J. is le akarthatta tudni már ezt a galaxist, remélhetőleg pár év pihenés után visszatér oda, ahol ember még nem járt.

Azért nyugalom, megnézem még párszor, és már nem fogom ilyen borúsan látni a helyzetet.

De most még kissé kiábrándult vagyok.

I got this request so much I now preface my panels that if you’re looking for magical boys you’re looking in the wrong genre (and I’ll get more into that under the cut!)

First off I wanna say people who are looking for a Magical Boy show are looking under the wrong genre header. What you want to search for is Henshin Hero or Super Sentai.

Sailor Moon is the series that set up a lot of the tropes that most people today recognize making up a magical girl show, and Naoko Takeuchi has admitted to lifting those tropes straight from Super Sentai shows like Kamen Rider and Power Rangers. Things like the long form transformation, color coded teams, etc. can all be found there. So if you want a good animated Henshin Hero show here is a list of anime:
