'in the name of pain and outrage'
an analysis of the ending
I say this with utmost love, but episode 16 was a shitshow.
i walked into this show accepting it at face value – a show that would take itself lightly, with a compelling subplot marinated in humor, and a dose of sweet romance.
this show tried to include very mature, sobering themes with slapstick humor, which is definitely possible if balanced properly, but i feel this show was not able to achieve this the way do bong soon or others could.
to get some of the discrepancies out of the way:
they never told us that the women's senses were connected, geum joo should not have been able to feel namsoon's thirst – that's something they abruptly added to fuel the tension of the situation.
there is absolutely no reason nam soon would react like that to the drug, when you compare it to how every other user was affected by it.
the strength exerted by gil-joongan did not feel like enough to knock her out like that
and with how easy it would've been to leave the situation, it's very obvious that nam soon taking the drug was an ill-planned way to raise the stakes and increase suspense
the homeless couple truly had nothing of value to add to the show or it's message
none of the show's themes or messages were delivered properly towards the end, and it went against everything it preached.
the immediate tone change after ryu si-o's death did not do any justice to the effort put into his characterization
i do not understand how nam soon became a cop, all technicalities considered
why was she throwing humans out a window from the second floor, even if they're criminals??
they REALLY cheapened the whole marriage conversation by bringing money, property, and heirs into it. that was NOT romantic or wholesome. hee-sik deserves better parents, tf.
side note: i'm pretty disappointed with namsoon's character arc, but lee yoo mi worked within the purview of the script to give us honestly wonderful acting, especially in episode 15.
now, to get into the ending, i'll start with this:
what we got, felt like an empty victory. hollow and out of place.
i've always been an advocate for all parts of a show coming together to create an experience – there's usually no single keystone.
but as soon as si-o died, the rest of the episode felt like a blur, with all loose ends being succinctly wrapped up and prepared for season three. byeon woo seok, and his characterization really carried the show as a unit, and added to its cohesiveness. i did not find myself rooting for geum joo and nam soon's successes afterwards
because they had failed the ONE thing most of us had been hoping for them to do:
to save people who were victims of oppression from those with the power of money, and empower them, including to save si-o from his oppressors, and help him take down pavel.
there is no satisfaction in geum joo doing it by herself, because she has no emotional investment in destroying pavel.
losing hwaja and si-o, watching namsoon & heesik become one dimensional all of a sudden, and seeing tertiary unrelated characters having their loose ends tied, is extremely unsatisfactory – for a show that had an incredible cast and so much potential.
at the same time: i loved the portreyal of gil joongan's mission to help the elderly and her enthusiasm for her future, and the addition of binbin + looking into their past from an additional angle also really elevated the emotional context of si-o's character arc.
i loved each character, truly, and to not see the plot and writers give them the detail and care they deserve, is wholly disappointing.
the show took me on a whole journey, emotionally,,,but to know exactly what would make it better, and be aware of its discrepancies makes me grieve the potential it had to truly leave an impact on its viewers, with a solid takeaway message.

actually going a bit crazy because I know I KNOW Hee-sik and Nam-soon will be endgame and ough yes, they are insanely cute together!!! but also I cannot stop thinking about the what-ifs and what-could-have-beens of Nam-soon and Ryu Si-oh's dynamic, i.e: “I can fix him”/ “I can make her worse” something about this makes my mind go fizzy like soda I'm so sorry

So all of Jinwol’s brothers blame him for their father’s actions, even into adulthood? How do they feel about and act toward their father? Also does Seongwoo or the others want to be picked as their father’s successor?
it’s a little more complex than them blaming him. his brothers sustained the trauma of losing their mother and immediately having her “replaced” at a young age. along with the age gap between them and jinwol, it created a chasm that none of them have the capability to bridge.
they don’t hate him for the actions of their father, but in seongwoo’s case he resents that jinwol is everything he wishes he could be. and in some ways, vice versa. his brothers have complex and varying feelings about their father, but the common thread between all four of them is that they still crave his approval. and whether or not he or the other two (not yet introduced) brothers want to be sect leader is a spoiler!

Why does no one mention jimin and ong seongwoo going on a movie date in 2019? There's even a pic of them, ong has a drink with 2 straws in it on opposite sides. Rumor has it that jimin's ex-boyfriend was ong seongwoo. What if that's actually jimin's boyfriend 🤭
Hi Anon. No offense, well offense, actually...your question is kinda dumb.
First of all, that was in 2019.
No one mentions Jimin and Ong? I'm sure that if you find older Jikook blogs, you will find them discussing that just like they've discussed other outings that Jimin or Jungkook had with different people... Back in 2019.
Jimin and Jungkook doing things with people doesn't mean they are dating said people. It's called having friends and being your own person not just a half of a relationship.
Jimin and Ong going on a movie date. Jimin and Jungkook have gone to "movie dates" as you call them too soo...
Ong has a drink with 2 straws. He does. That doesn't prove anything, though? Did we see them drink out of the same cup? Were there other people with them? We don't know. Does drinking out of the same cup mean anything? Because if you think it does, then Jimin and Jungkook are boyfriends. They've shared a slice of lemon, the same cereal bowl, a lollipop, steak, ice cream, gimbap, pizza, the list goes on. Here is a little summary lol:
youtube
They've done that since they were younger and the last time we saw them share a ramen bowl on screen was in the Busan welive on Oct 2022. So based on that logic Jikook has been together for years now.
What if that's actually Jimin's boyfriend? When I first heard about Ong, I looked it up and analyzed at the evidence we had.
The things that Jimin did with Ong, he has/had done with other people and a lot of the stuff included Sungwoon. I didn't find anything that to me indicated that they were dating. Even during the interactions with Ong, Jimin is still checking on Jungkook's reaction.
youtube
Why would he care what Jungkook thinks or feels? Unless....
I do think that Jikook went through a rough patch or break during part of 2018 and part of 2019. During this time, we saw Jimin in outings with friends but based on what I observed, I don't think he was dating anyone of them. Ong included.
If Jimin was dating anyone else, it would mean that everything Jikook did in 2018-2019 was fan service and I don't think Jikook is fan service.
Jikook was different during that time because they lacked the closeness, the exclusivity. They were still friendly towards each other, of course, but they both didn't actively search for each other. However, we had some of the great Jikook moments happen in that time frame.
To me, that's indication that they were trying to get back on track, trying to get that exclusiveness again. Making a big gesture so the other person can see that you still want to give it a try.
And they did. Jikook's relationship took a step forward and matured a little more. You see the closeness. They began being exclusive again. Only doing certain things for each other and no one else.
And that's where we are today too. Only doing certain things for each other and no one else.
So based on your logic, Jungkook is Jimin's boyfriend.
Thanks for confirming, anon!

say it with me 👏🏽
a lot of us are not shipping si-o & namsoon blindly. we want REDEMPTION, more than any romance arc. especially considering the writers gave him the desire to leave the mafia:
he clearly explores the idea of potentially choosing the light, in multiple scenes, it's not a hidden detail or a headcannon
the writers have given si-o and namsoon multiple, (multiple) romantic scenes. they INTENDED for part of the audience to ship them as well – it's a love triangle. intentionally.
yes, the casting team chose an aesthetically pleasing actor to play this role because they want him to be likable – but the reason many people like ryu si-o is NOT solely because he's "hot" — he has a hashed out past that the audience either connects with or relates to, in some way.
-> a lot of the people who support his character, support him not because they're attracted to someone with trauma/someone who will perpetuate abuse, but because they see aspects of themselves in his character: a neglected child, who faced terrible situations and wants simply to live.
a very important distinction:
getting redemption does not mean he gets away scot-free with his crimes, it means he realizes that there is an option for him to have a life outside of his trauma and gets the privilege to have that, while paying for his actions, either legally or morally.
