Spark of Life Chapter 13

In the days after his wings are ripped cruelly from his back, Xiao does nothing but sleep and cry.

His master doesn’t call on him during that time, which is perhaps the only merciful thing she’s ever done for him. She sends him to his room  once the deed has been done, dripping blood down his back and onto the floor with every step he takes. He’ll be punished for the mess later, undoubtedly, but at the moment he hardly has the mind to walk in a straight line, much less care about the bright red footprints he’s leaving behind.

He feels weightless in a way that’s distinctly upsetting. When he’d flown before, unfettered from the relentless pull of gravity, the feeling of lightness had been freeing, exhilarating, but now, with his balance thrown and his head foggy from pain, he wonders if he’ll even stay stuck to the floor at all without his wings to keep him grounded. The world around him shifts and spins nauseatingly as he stumbles into the cold concrete room that he calls his chambers. Bland as they are, he’s considered one of the lucky ones; in his private room, he will not need to worry about being observed by any of his master’s other attendants when he shuts the door and collapses onto the ground.

His shoulders burn with a kind of pain he’s rarely felt before, his skin red and raw and jagged from being torn. Within a handful of days, the wide-open gashes will have healed to nothing more than ugly white scars, but until then, he’ll have to endure the healing process on his own.

He curls up on the cold, hard floor of his room so his blood doesn’t ruin the cot set up in the corner, and only then does he allow himself to cry. Here, there is no one to witness his shame, hot tears splattering on the floor and mixing with his own blood. He wraps his arms tightly around himself, his fingertips digging into the jagged holes where the bones of his wings had once laid, the sting of it mingling with the ever-present ache that threatens to steal away his consciousness. His head swims with dizziness, dark spots dancing at the edges of his vision and threatening to black it out. He can’t remember the last time he’d felt such pain.

Perhaps, he thinks as his consciousness fades, perhaps this will be the time that I wake up and find that this was all just a long, terrible dream.

Then, just before the darkness claims him, he thinks, Perhaps it wouldn’t be so bad if I never woke up at all.

I finished this 60k+ longfic earlier this year after working on it for over 6 months, so I wanted to share it now that I'm using tumblr again! Since posting it, it's become my most popular fic on AO3, and even though it's finished, it's kind of like my baby hahaha.

I originally wrote this fic for the Genshin Big Bang on twitter, and chose to do a reincarnation AU since I had never written one before, but has always kind of wanted to. It immediately spiraled out of control and into a much longer, much more involved project, but I enjoyed writing ever word of it. I hope you all enjoy it as well!
