It is interesting to look the concept of seriality, which we frequently discussed in class, through the figure of uroboros: the cycle of death and rebirth, so to say an infinite interruption.
The seriaity, as we defined it, also bears this relation of eternity and finitude: namely, that seriality presupposes the possibility of the final, and yet it could go on and on.
Many TV shows correspond to such serial structure (which is quite expected, they are literally serials), but the one popped in my head was a cult British sci-fi series Doctor Who. This show is a perfect embodimet of the serial infinite interruption, recalling uroboros image.
Tumblr media
What makes this show distinctive is regeneration. The main character (alien called the Doctor, to put it it simply) is able to completely transform their body, while (partially) preserving their essence.
This plot device basically allows eternal broadcasting of the show, which goes beyond mortality of the human beings, since change of actors is narratively justified. Every renewal interrupts the flow, and these interruption anticipate re-birth, rather than definitive end.
Tumblr media
Peculiar, that in recently aired 60th DW anniversary special episodes beloved characters from previous seasons returned: the Tenth (now Fourteenth) Doctor (played by David Tennant) and his companion Donna Noble.
Such return is not new for the show, it happened both with Doctors and other characters. The novelty is that Tennant's Doctor now can co-exist with all the following doctors, creating the possibility for him to return at any moment.
Tumblr media
This co-existence creates a constant anticipation of rupture and repetition.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?
Intro takes a special position within the concept of seriality. SpongeBob 1999 intro song has never been regarded as a boring or an outdated one.
What makes people rewatch the same intro each episode, be it the 5th or the 25th one? Intro - is an integral part of any series, a part that makes a series a series.
Intro tells us about a circulation of the plot in a series. SpongeBob may die in the end of each episode, but be reborn in the beginning of a new one. The plot becomes circular. The intro exaggerates the role of destruction and circulation in a series, it makes us forget about what could happen in a previous episode and perceive a new episode as an independent one.
Seriality does not have an end. In fact, it can be stopped at any point and episode. Intro is thus a vital element that contributes to the structure of seriality, which makes each episode seem important and interesting to watch.

Robot characters who are given names like SL-308-62 but instead of their human friend going Well let's call you Sally for short, they instead ask the other if they Like their current name.
"Do you like your serial number?" they ask. "Yes, quite. It reminds me of who I am" the robot replies. "I have heard others like me go by different names after some time, and maybe one day I'll choose one for myself, too. But right now that is my full name, yes" they continue.
Because it's not your decision to make whether or not the robot will receive a new name. It should be theirs only. What's the difference? One is more complex and the other is simplified. They were both given by strangers instead of themselves.
"62 will do," they conclude. "It's my model number - there will be no other 62 after me."

EARNEST POSTING. while everyone is still working on new year’s resolutions i want to make sure everyone knows about the FREE serial reader app.
Tumblr media
if you are trying to read more classics/public domain works but for whatever reason struggle with incorporating reading into your daily life, or you’re just intimidated by huge books, serial reader is a great tool to make reading more approachable. it works much like dracula daily in that it sends you one excerpt at a time (usually about 10-15 minutes of estimated reading time). awesome for commutes, lunch breaks, quick bedtime story, etc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s very customizable. you can change fonts, themes, and you can even take notes and highlight. you can also sync with other reading apps like goodreads (no storygraph yet……. we can hope!). the base app is completely free, but there is a one-time optional upgrade fee of $2.99 USD if you want some extra features. this is all developed by one guy, so the money goes to supporting the creator - although i’m sure apple takes their cut 😑.
Tumblr media
there are a ton of works to choose from, currently something like 800+.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can now also add your own .epubs to break up your own books into daily serials! very cool, serial reader!
Tumblr media
this was the best app i added last year so i just want to pass it on. happy reading! :)

From Dickens to Bridgerton
by Maria Isabel Nieves Bosch
'While it is fruitful to understand television as a socio-cultural object and its materiality, it is also important to examine national broadcasting programs to understand the industry in a specific cultural context. When Queen Elizabeth II started her reign in the UK, one of the strategies she used to gain people’s trust and attention was through TV.'

There was a serial killer on the loose, and everyone called them The Clapping Ass Man because he would slowly clap as he approached victims to scare them. And then the internet stepped and added the ass part. The killer did not like this and tried to change it, but the name was set. The name also lead to many people looking for The Clapping Ass Man to “get some of that juicy booty” (dream quote). This disturbed the killer so much that he just stopped killing.
