HONESTLY?!!!!! we have a complicated relationship. i really like zhao as a villain and i say that so very honestly. i think people make him out to be a lot stupider than he really is but at the same time he really is stupid in the way that evil men are always stupid. i think hes extremely despicable and hideously vain and his vanity clouds his judgement and causes him to make rash decisions.

Hi! I saw your post about blocking all the Dabihawks fans and I was wondering what happened in August 2018? I just joined the fandom, like, last month (after binging both the manga and anime) so I don’t really know much about what’s been happening in the fandom.

It wasn’t really a fandom thing per se, it was more of a personal preference thing, but I’ll explain! 

I’ll just put under the cut for anyone who’s just scrolling by and wants to avoid the “drama” (it’s hardly drama, just me being bitter and cranky, but still!) Also it’s actually super long, I apologize for being such a bitter bitch.

Okay so the long story short is that I hate the ship dabih*wks with every single fibre of my being, and the ship kind of blew up during summer 2018, especially August. I know that it’s not really that bad, but this ship makes me super uncomfortable and so it was super anxious every time I went online, and this big mess made me hate the ship even more.

I kind of want to quickly explain why I hate the ship so much, so I’ll give the reasons from the pettiest to least petty. Warning, this all still very petty.

1) The simplest, pettiest reason: shigadabi is my otp and even though I like many other Shigaraki ships I hate the idea of Dabi being with everyone else.

2) I think that Dabi and Hawks are both very bland and insanely overhyped by the fandom. There are many things I do love about them, but I overall think they’re not that interesting and I’m tired of seeing them get all the attention. So the two of them being paired up TOGETHER is peak annoyance and irritation for me.

3) Like I said there still things I love about them though, but the dabih*wks ship shits all over all of these things. I like Dabi is a chaotic evil bastard, the guy who tried to kill his little brother during the summer camp arch and laughed while doing it. I like Dabi as part of the LOV, the brooding asshole who still cares about his messy new found family. Dabi who believes in Shig even if he acts tough and who wants to see the world burn to ashes. So the idea of Dabi saying “fuck all that lmao” just to hook up with bland boi Hawks is just … yikes to me. All that talk the dabih*wks shipper have about Dabi secretly being a good guy who hates the LOV and works with Hawks to kill them is seriously grossing me out. When it comes to Hawks, I love that he is a genuinely good guy desperately trying to do the right thing because it will make his conflict with the LOV more interesting. So the idea of Hawks going evil and switching sides just to hook up with Dabi is another yikes. I also think that Hawksdeavor and Shigahawks are VASTLY more interesting ships and I’ve seen many dabih*wks fans attacking them. (Seriously dude shigahawks is so good they have the exact same backstory the parallels are so strong!!)

4) The fourth reason I hate it is basically everything that happened during summer 2018. Like I said, the ship blew up and was EVERYWHERE it was really hard to avoid. But the worst thing was that people started to shamelessly shit on shigadabi and Shigaraki himself. Tomura is an insanely important character to me, he is my favourite, he brings me so much joy and helped me so much. Shigadabi is my otp, it’s very important to me, I’m very emotionally invested in it, I wrote so many fics about them. And suddenly, the Shigaraki AND shigadabi tag were FILLED with comments such as “can’t wait for Dabi to kill shig and join hawks uwu” or “god FINALLY someone hot to ship Dabi with I can drop shigadabi” or “shigadabi is dead yall dabih*wks is where it’s at”. So yeah. Many shigadabi artists that I loved completely dropped the ship to focus on dabih*wks and realised that a lot of them didn’t care about Shig at all and just wanted a hot guy to ship Dabi with. And the fucking fics … the Dabi/Shigaraki tag on AO3 is quite literally my safe happy place, and suddenly it was filled with dabih*wks fics with Shig being Dabi’s abusive ex-boyfriend and Hawks “rescuing” him. Past shigadabi, implied shigadabi, abusive shigadabi … it was all over the tag. And I just had to sit there and accept the fact that Shigaraki, A FUCKING ABUSE SURVIVOR, was now overly portrayed as an abusive piece of shit just so people could make their dumb ship happen. Just complete mischaracterization of Shig, Dabi and Hawks all around. Dabi was either an incompetent fool to make Dabi and Hawks cooler, or he was an abusive bastard to create an obstacle in the relationship. YIKES.

So yeah that’s broadly it. I’m very active in the shigadabi/shigaraki fandom. I’ve made so many good friends and met some amazing writers and artists. But during summer 2018, what was my happy place just brought me an INSANE amount of stress, anxiety and discomfort. 

And don’t get me wrong, I know that 80% of the dabih*wks shippers are super chill lovely people (and wish them the best), but they have a loud toxic minority so I’m not taking any chances. Now, I literally cannot look at a pic of Hawks and Dabi standing next to each other, I have way too much negative memories and feelings associated with it.

I have the ship blacklisted in every possible way and I blocked all the people who were actively messaging me to tell me to drop shigadabi because it was “a bad ship and also abusive Dabi would never fuck such an ugly guy” (yes that was also a thing that happened). So I’ve been doing pretty okay these past few months, I successfully ignored that ship! I also feel like the ship isn’t as active as it was in summer 2018, some people kind of lost interest in it. 

But yeah, now that they add another canon interaction I’m expecting it to come back to life and I am NOT going through that shit all over again. Like I said, I have blacklisted in every possible way, I only ever go to the Shigaraki tags AND YET I already saw three dabih*wks posts. So no thanks. 

I probably won’t actually block every single person who mentions it, I know for a fact that some of my mutuals enjoy the ship and it’s fine I can live with that as long as they tag it and I can avoid it. But yeah I’m no longer taking any chances. 2019 is the year of self care where I only want good things on my dash, thank you very much.
