Hello there, I have a two part question here: Is Illyrio Mopatis also a descendent of the female Blackfyre line, or do you think Aegon’s Blackfyre heritage comes purely through his mother, Serra?
Likewise, is Varys a Blackfyre (hence the castration), and therefore directly related to Serra, Aegon and/or possibly even Illyrio?
I don't believe either Varys or Illyrio are members of the Blackfyre lineage themselves, although I am a believer that Aegon is a descendant of the Blackfyres through the female line; the specific denial given by Illyrio is simply too on-the-nose for it not to be relevant. I actually believe Varys to be what he says: an enlightened master who believes that a person completely crafted and pruned like a bonsai tree can create a ruler of perfect benevolence. It comes from his beginnings as a mummer, he believes he can craft a monarch with a perfect fantasy origin to connote legitimacy through Varys's command of symbol. It's an exercise of supreme hubris, of course, and Tyrion's chapters with Aegon already show how hollow Varys's plan really is, but conceptually, it's fascinating.
Thanks for the question, Anon.

It always seems to drag on. It doesn't help that the priest has to most monotonous voice. Maybe she could close her eyes and no one would notice. She had to get up extra early to rile all the children from their beds, help dress them and ontop of that her sisters wanted ribbons braided in their hair. All of that kept her busy, leaving her little time to enjoy breakfast. Even then there wasn't much peace.
Liliana feels an elbow nudge her, pulling her from the grasp of slumber. Josu's the culprit but with good reason. Everyone has started to move from their seats to kneel. Her father is side-eyeing her almost angrily. So she follows through the motions like everyone else, lest she get a verbal lashing like last time. Wretched child of mine, I should drown you in the baptismal for your disrespectful behavior, he had spewed with his hand wound in her hair, clutching tightly.
With string of beads in hand, the eldest Vess girl follows suit, kneeling on the tuffet. Yet unlike everyone else she doesn't bow her head, doesn't close her eyes and certainly doesn't utter the prayer that's begun. Instead she stares up towards the visage of Serra the Benevolent forever immortalized in marble. Her arms are outstretched as if welcoming all into her embrace. The expression on her face some would call confidently tender --- comforting in times of heartache. Liliana on the other hand finds the idol to be a cocky mockery, staring down and almost laughing at all the poor unfortunate souls who have placed their hope into a woman and her celestial pigeons.
When has the great Serra or her angels ever done anything? Where are they as skin witches flay the hide from innocents that scream and plead to the heavens? Where are they as the Cabal summons and plays with demonic forces? Where are they when the Cabal tear through the lands with nary a care nor sympathy, destroying everything in their wake? Where are they as Benalian soldiers lay dying on battlefields praying for mercy?
Where are the holy winged abominations while Liliana suffers?
Not here. No, they stay in whatever paradise they inhabit, gazing down at all the mortals as if they were nothing but dirt.
Angels care not for the affairs of mortals. All they want is the praise and glory. And mayhaps once in a millennia they decide to perform some crumb of a miracle to continue to string along the masses. Worst of all, mortals have picked up twisted puritanical practices of worship. The religious laws all culminating into an oppressive worldview filled with hypocrisy is what has played a large role in making her miserable. And for what? The misguided faith that celestial vermin will swoop down to save the day? To cure the sick and dying? To smite the Cabal as they terrorize all?
Soon Josu will join the frontlines with the rest of their father's soldiers; no angelic warriors to guard him.
So it's with great hatred that Liliana glares at the image of the holy mother as well as the depictions Serra's legions of flying rats.
Oh how she wishes to smash every window, shatter every statue and rip to shred every painting of them all! Perhaps one day she will.
And who's to say, maybe one day she will be worshipped in the same way. Doubtful. But a girl could dream. She would deserve it too. If given the opportunity Liliana would gather more power than any angel, perhaps even more than Serra herself.
Tears of rage have been mistaken for tears of zealous joy. Liliana says nothing when she sees her mother pass down a handkerchief to her. Of course she doesn't correct her mother's mistake. No, Liliana takes the floral embroidered fabric and delicately blots at her eyes.
One day Liliana will be free. Never again to be subjugated by her swine of a father, her dysfunctional family or the sham of a goddess and her chickens.
One day Liliana will become a true deity and all will kneel before her, will pray to HER.
One day...
Amen.

Not a question, and I know this is old news, but I just wanted to thank y'all for printing Serra the Benevolent. I had wanted a planeswalker card for her since Lorwyn and the result was exactly what I wanted. She's best friends with Lyra in my angel deck ^_^
I'm happy you're enjoying it.

FE7 Novelization Translation: Book 1 - Front Cover & Introductory Pages
Hello everyone and welcome to the start of yet another new Fire Emblem novelization translation! Yes, it really is that time again!
And get hype! This time, the game of choice was FE7!
I'll be translating this book set slower than normal, over the span of the remainder of this year and all of 2023, but it's a big one with about 650 pages total between both books, so there's plenty of content to keep giving everyone lots to read over all that time.
This one starts out with a pretty big spin making it stand out from the game right away. Can't wait to see everyone's thoughts on it in the coming weeks, when we start getting into the actual story!

fc: ilhan sen name: kerim sonmez age: 33 (born nov 17th) sign: scorpio height: 1.89 m weight:   82 kg occupation: owner of a 4 star island resort positive traits: hardworking, loyal, benevolent, honest negative traits: stubborn, materialistic, insecure, altruistic
favorites:
food: baklava color: black and gold season: fall movie: the goonies animal: cats song: clair de lune
bio:
the tenedos resort has been in the sonmez family for generation. a destination that many would only dream of visiting, the small yet luxurious hotel was known for being a magical place. and to kerim it was. growing up in the hotel with his older brother kaan, kerim learned the ins and outs of the business from a very young age, and dreamed of running the place himself one day. The only problem-- Kaan was older so it was his legacy first. their father took kaan under his wing, training him to take over the business, while kerim sat back with envy wishing it was him.
to his fathers displeasure, kaan wasn’t interested in the business. he dreamed of becoming a doctor, and when he graduated high school he took off for america to study. it caused a big rift in the family, until kerims father died of a massive heart attack. and although kerim missed his father and would have given anything to have him back, kerim was finally free to take over the hotel, vowing to keep his family legacy thriving.
kerim met his wife serra while she was visiting tenedos with her family. gorgeous and charismatic, kerim fell for her instantly and it wasn’t long before they were married. things were magical at first, the two did everything together and kerim showed her all the beauty that tenedos had to offer. she got pregnant with , and kerim was ready to start a family with her, however the signs were already showing that serra wasn’t happy. she tried her best after their daughter was born, but she missed the city and would take trips at least once a month to go visit family and friends.
5 few years later when serra got pregnant with their second child and things were only worse. the closer she got to giving birth, the more she resented kerim and being trapped on the island, realizing that a life here with 2 kids was not what she wanted at all,  so it wasn’t a surprise when she left shortly after their son was born. what was a surprise however-- was the months that continued to pass and she didn’t return home. their conversations got fewer and fewer until one day, kerem woke up to an attorney serving divorce and dissmissal of custody papers for their 2 children.
its now been nearly a year since their divorce has finalized, and kerim still doesn’t know what exactly happened that made it all go wrong. he knows he needs help though. the hotel he can handle with no problems, but a 7 year old and 2 year old? there he’s really struggling and his elderly mother can only help with so much.

A common thing I've seen regarding Lili is the mention or the vibe of her growing up "fantasy Catholic" or is part of the "Catholic to Goth pipeline" or just Catholic coded in general and honestly I can dig it. Especially because personally, Lili gives off some of the common Southern Gothic vibes.
It's no secret that Liliana abhors angels and their very existence. A major portion of it comes from the simple fact she finds them to be a nuisance; just another roadblock in her way. And she's killed plenty of them without a second thought.
Yet her hatred of them also comes from when she was growing up, the religion on New Benalia involved the worship of angels; first Angelfire then Serra the Benevolent and all her angelic creations. As a child she followed it because of her parents but as she got older first she was indifferent then grew to be bitter towards the celestial beings and Serra herself. Because no matter how hard anyone prayed, no matter how much worship or sacrifice was made, no angels so much as batted an eye in their direction or bothered to aid in the Benalian's effort to combat the Cabal.
Grand Cathedrals would be built in honor and for worship for the angels. The insides rich with gold and intricate details. The stained glass windows, statues and art depict the so beloved supposed saviors of the land. Serra the Benevolent would be revered in the same way as Mother Mary and then some. There's of course priests/priestesses & saints. There's masses held weekly not just on a holy sabbath day but other days as well. There's the sound of bells ringing and hymns being sung; the sight & smell of candles as well as incense. Tithes and offerings are of course given --- expected even. Mayhaps even rosaries carried by the faithful comprised of beads and a single metal charm.
But with all the rites & rituals & preaching of faith, love and peace, there's a certain culture bred --- one that frowns upon heresy and sin. And I'm sure we all can fill in certain blanks. And it's likely Lili suffers some religious trauma.
One thing remains true in Lili's perception of it all: no one came swooping from the heavens to save all the lambs like preached. No angel answered pleas and prayers when Josu fell ill. There were only the cries of the corvids, waiting for their carrion comfort.

SDMI Mystery Solving Gangs
I’ve been thinking about Nova (or well, the alien speaking through her body) saying that the Hunters of Secrets (the first mystery-solving group) were the purest ones. Which seems to be supported by the narrative up until the very end of the series. Let’s review this.
Not to discredit the Hunters of Secrets because they were going to destroy the Entity but the conquistadors took the sarcophagus away from them before they could do it. So they are surely purer than most of those who come after them.
The conquistadors were not a mystery-solving group but they are part of the progression of corruption that the Entity set off in motion. They were truly overtaken by the evil and they did its bidding almost up until the very end. But they did snap out of it and tried to contain the evil and fix their mistake, which seems to start breaking through the corruption of the Entity.
From the Fraternitas Mysterium only Porto fell victim to the curse while the friars did their best to hide the parts of the Planispheric Disk. It seems that the effect of the curse is weakening even if it’s still taking victims and causing chaos and destruction.
Then we go through a couple mystery-solving groups (Mystery Gang and Alianza Misterio) that only come in contact with the keys to the gates behind which the entity is locked. The effect of the curse has lessened but it is still at work.
The Benevolent Lodge of Mystery still doesn’t come in contact with any parts of the Planispheric Disk but we know that Abigail Gluck devoted the last years of her life to looking for them and the entire gang came in contact with one of the keys as well.
The Mystery Fellowship aka the Darrow family are the first ones to come across an actual part of the Planispheric Disk in a long, long time along with another one of the keys that we see them possess. Clearly the Entity is driving those it manipulates closer to freeing it and we see how the corruption overtakes them. All of the Darrow family lose their minds to the desire to possess the Planispheric Disk and Danny Darrow manages to free himself from it only when the Scooby Gang shows up.
Now the original Mystery Inc is a curious case because Pericles was the only one originally corrupted by the curse. It was what destroyed their group (pretty much echoing the warning about Porto and the animal companion that Friar Serra gave the Scooby gang). But in season 2 they (with the exception of Cassidy and to an extent Ricky whose corruption was mostly tied to his friendship with Pericles) become more and more desperate to possess the Planispheric Disk which culminates in practical madness once they steal the full Disk from the Scooby gang. The curse is getting stronger or at least so it seems.
The original Mystery Inc are not the ones that gather the pieces of the Planispheric Disk. Pericles only found the first one and then stole the one that the Scooby gang recovered from the Darrow mansion. Any other progress on piecing the Disk together has been made by the Scooby gang. And they never got corrupted by the Entity. They did find everything they needed to get to it but their idea was always to destroy it. The fact that Pericles stole the Disk from them didn’t make much difference except for the psychological distress that whole chase caused the Scooby gang (and pretty much everyone else in town).
The Scooby gang are at least as pure as the Hunters of Secrets if not more since they were never corrupted by the Entity. I was actually surprised that I’ve never listened well during 2x22 because Nova says it right there that they’re perfect and the true descendants of the Hunters. And the good side of Mayor Jones also mentions that they are supposed to undo all the evil as if it has never happened. The ending was actually described right there but I never paid enough attention to notice earlier. They were always working towards the defeat of the evil despite all the suffering it actually managed to cause. While it was hard at work trying to sway insecure souls to free it, that only led to the opposite when the gang weren’t susceptible to the corruption despite the progression of the curse’s effect to imply that the exact opposite should be happening.

I was toying with the idea of a white mana aligned villain for mtg and accidentally made a ‘benevolent’ dictator who controls a world down to the very thoughts people are allowed to have. Like. You want to grow flowers that aren’t on the approved list? Re-education camp for you. Don’t smile at all times? Re-education camp. Even suggest that the great and all powerful Lady of Light is maybe not always the best? Angels tear you king from limb.
Why is my brain like this? How did I go from thinking about Serra to… a dictator so controlling she‘ll have you murdered for wrongthink like “I’m not rating my joy at 11/10 today”
