Temistocle

Temistocle, membro della nuova generazione di politici sale alla ribalta della democrazia ateniese, insieme al suo grande rivale Aristide. Aveva Combattuto a Maratona durante la prima guerra persiana, essendo uno dei dieci strateghi ateniesi menzionati da Erodoto. Come grande politico, Temistocle era vicino al popolo e godeva dell'appoggio delle classi inferiori ateniesi, che, in generale, lo contrapponevano alla nobiltà. Eletto arconte nel 493 a.C prese una serie di misure per aumentare la potenza navale di Atene, cosa che sarebbe diventata fondamentale per tutta la sua carriera politica.
