There is a well-known misnomer about cooking oils rampantly spreading around the world that oily fatty food is really bad for health and must be avoided at all costs. This has created a bad lifestyle choice among many.

TIL you guys also like fish!!!! please let me introduce you to the rest of my fishy community!
first of all, these are my fish tanks:
Tumblr media
this is a 20 gallon tall tank that I will be upgrading to a 37 long next year when I find out where I’m going for residency. the 5lb pressurized cannister is a CO2 tank that I use to inject carbon dioxide into the water (on a timer)! CO2 is the limiting “nutrient” for plant growth underwater in a tank like mine (with bright light and fertilizers added), so it helps encourage plant growth and more vibrant colors in plants with red and orange tones, as well as carpeting plants.
Tumblr media
this is a 6.4 gallon tank that also has CO2 injection, and currently no fish because it is cycling (and will be for about 4 weeks). it will be her highness the betta fish’s new home once it is cycled, because she keeps murdering my shrimp in the community tank. once she is moved, I will probably get a pair of honey gouramis for the community tank.
Tumblr media
this is one of the shrimp in question! she is pregnant. (eggnant, you might say.) I love her.
Tumblr media
these are my kuhli loaches! I have 6 black and 6 banded. they are technically different species and the banded ones are much more shy. they spend a lot of time swimming circles along the glass and draping themselves over plants upside-down to make me think they are dead. they get very offended when you poke them to make sure they’re not dead.
Tumblr media
I have 8 neon tetras. they’re all fat and extremely hard to take non-blurry photos of.
Tumblr media
I also have 3 hillstream loaches, which are one of my favorite fish of all time. they’re juveniles that bred from a friend’s tank, and they look like tiny little stingrays that are frequently stuck to the side of the glass. they are aufwuchs-eaters which means they scrape algae and biofilm off the surfaces of things, but they also like sifting through sand and need sufficient protein (aka. not pure algae eaters).
here’s what they look like from the bottom:
Tumblr media
I also have snails:
Tumblr media
this is the biggest of my three nerite snails! I like nerites because they have bright colors and they don’t reproduce in fresh water. however, if you get a female (like this one), they WILL lay tiny white little sesame seed eggs everywhere, even though they can’t hatch. I used to have “pest” snails in the form of bladder snails and freshwater limpets but, uh, I have a total of 15 loaches in the tank, so. I no longer have pest snails and my loaches are all well-fed. :”)
thank u for coming to my ted talk. I love fish. I love my fish. please come talk to me about fish. I leave u with one last photo of her highness in all her glory:

Here's what you're gonna do. You're gonna take the leftover rice out the fridge. Stick it in a bowl, add a little water, reheat in the microwave for 2 minutes. No more, no less. Then you'll fry up a couple eggs in a small pan. Make sure the yolks don't break. Put some salt n' pepper on 'em, wait 'til the whites are cooked, transfer 'em to the bed of rice. Now this is the most important part. You'll top the whole thing with sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce, and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Chop up some fresh scallions if you have 'em, if not don't bother. Got that?

The Magic of Lohri
Growing up in North India, it has been a childhood practice to observe that on an arbitrary day in January, the people in my society would gather around a bonfire singing, going around in circles, chanting and putting in peanuts, rewri, and popcorn. Of course, you must've realised that I'm talking about Lohri. Finding its roots in the areas of Punjab and Haryana, this festival marks the harvest of the crops, successively the new year for a lot of communities in these regions.
Whilst there's the idea of new year, it also acts as a day of union for friends, family or even coworkers. Marking the winter solstice, the agelong practices of having roasted peanuts, rewri (an amalgamation of gud-jaggery and til-sesame seeds) and popcorn, also keeps you warm on a cold, wintery night. As far as anecdotal accounts extend, Lohri has always been a chilly night with nuts and seeds that keep one warm accompanied by cups of tea served by my father whilst my grandmother and brother would be working on keeping the fire going along with kapoor, wood and oil. Meanwhile I'd be on the duty of procuring food, and documenting the entire thing and working on music.
This festival, to a lot of people, involves acts of service towards the underprivileged and finding happiness in togetherness as opposed to being consumed by their workaholic, daily lives. In lots of parts of India, Lohri, often, involves a grand celebration to mark the birth of a child, bringing, even the extended family together. Thus, whether or not you belong to the community that celebrates the historical significance of the fête, it still brings about togetherness across boundaries and obliterating the evils of human in the auspicious fire. Oh my, it's already time?! I better go get my popcorn and peanuts! Have fun!

Breads in the oven! Both are my MILS challah recipe but one is un-braided and has a cinnamon, brown sugar and white sugar swirl in the middle and topping. The other is braided with sesame seed on top. I’m bringing the unbraided one to my mom’s Easter brunch tomorrow. (As is abundantly clear from my blog. I am converting to Judaism, my parents are Christian) The braided one is a bribe to keep my husband out of the cinnamon one til tomorrow.
They smell amazing and will be coming out of the oven any moment now.

A cheap, delicious, and low-effort stirfry recipe I’ve been enjoying! The sauce is inspired by these seasoned bean sprouts. It’s great with just bean sprouts and garlic, but today I used some leftover ham, fried tofu, onions, and green peppers.
First, fry anything that you want to flavor the oil: onions, garlic, ham, etc. If you’re using any non-bean sprout veggies, slice them thin and add them now. Mix the sauce—1.5 tsp each ponzu, mentsuyu, and sesame oil, 3.5 tsp kombu dashi powder, a pinch of sugar, and vinegar/lemon and chili oil to taste. Once the other ingredients are cooked, add the bean sprouts to the pan, cook til translucent, then add the sauce and toss to coat. Optional sesame seeds and green onion to serve.

The Mahasiddha Tilopa was one of the earlier lineage masters of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.
He was Indian and was ordained as a monk at the temple of Somapuri in Bengal. It is said that one day, a dakini (female wisdom being) appeared to him in a vision, and Tilopa requested teachings from her. He received the initiation into the Chakrasamvara Tantra from her, and henceforth, he practised Chakrasamvara at his monastery.
When he did his practice, women were seen entering his quarters, and thus, he was expelled from the community for breaking monastic rules.
Tilopa wandered throughout India, seeking out many teachers and acquiring many teachings. He earned his living by grinding sesame seeds ('til' in Sanskrit) for oil, which gave rise to his name, Tilopa. It is said that he had a vision of the Buddha Vajradhara, who gave him teachings on Mahamudra and who became his main teacher. He ended up in remote and inhospitable places, but his fame as a great meditational master brought him equally great disciples. None is more famous than his main disciple, Mahasiddha Naropa.
To cause yourself and your life to be intensely filled with happiness, do everything you can to give happiness to others.
Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can.
As long as ever you can.
May you be well and happy my friends.
I am grateful for your interest in Dharma and following my blog.
Any mistakes are solely my own and not the fault with the Dharma or masters quoted here.
