Melt (A03 | Dokuga | FFnet)
Summary: Sesshomaru can be as cold and unforgiving as the winter season. It's a good thing Kagome knows exactly how to thaw his icy heart.
A one-shot written for SessKag week Day 4: White/Sacred/Purity & Truth
Excerpt: Flecks of white descend upon the forest. Minuscule shards of ice hit the treetops, causing a symphony of pitter-latter sounds as they hit leaves, branches, and eventually the snow-covered ground.
The first blizzard of winter is always a magical time of year. Kagome enjoys watching how the chilly weather transforms Edo. Inside the frost-covered huts, hearth fires provide a warm glow. Outside, the semi-frozen river moves slower than during the rest of the year.
She stands outside with her face tilted toward the sky. It’s bitter cold but Kagome doesn’t mind. She savors the feel of each snowflake as it hits her cheek. For a second, the frozen particle exists. Then it melts into a tiny droplet of water— forever changed by the heat.
Kagome smiles.
Winter hasn’t always been her favorite season. Her opinion has changed over the last couple of years. The shift is due to one particular demon lord who has been described as frosty in his own right.

For SessKag Week Day 1: Green - Nature & Eternity, it has to be Goshinboku. I like to think Sesshomaru uses it as an anchor as he weathers the centuries waiting for Kagome. And then finally one day she’s there, waiting for him on the other side.
I’m so excited for this week! I’m finally getting used to using my finger on my tablet after losing my stylus :’)

(Thank you to neb and harlecorn for helping me with figuring out plot stuff for this.)
Taken by the Tide
The dreams grew increasingly more frequent lately. When most people reached their late twenties, they were firmly convinced fairytales were just that; fairy tales. Children's stories.
Her late Great Aunt had certainly thought so.
Kagome's dreams took shape as memories. Things she hadn't forgotten but pushed down until the date of her marriage loomed imposingly close. She supposed the little reminders in her sleep were a countdown. Her brain's way of warning her; she was close to plunging into unknown waters.
Laying her head down that night in her hotel room, Kagome stifled a sigh, knowing exactly what she'd see the second she closed her eyes.
-----
Eight-year-old Kagome Higurashi wrinkled her nose at the thought of travelling in a plane for so long, and visibly wilted when she was told she'd be away for two weeks.
Moving house sucked.
Her heavily pregnant mother explained that she and her father would arrange everything at the new house in Tokyo to make it perfect. They'd be moving in with Grandpa at his shrine. Therefore, Kagome found herself whisked out of the way while her family moved across the country. She didn't see why she had to take a 12 hour plane trip under the guise of a 'holiday' just because they were moving. She could've helped!
Great Aunt Mio greeted her with a gentle smile at the airport, driving her down some winding roads toward her humble home. Kagome bowed her head slightly, hiding her face in the depths of her scarf. Now, she did love her Great Aunt, the only problem was she did not love her house.
Mostly the location of it.
In Scotland. Cold, damp, very chilly Scotland.
Kagome bundled herself tighter into her blue coat while Mio chatted. She glanced around sparse scenery, picking up the change in her Great Aunt's accent, influenced by her many years abroad.
She noticed a quiet beach with white shores lay directly behind the isolated house once they pulled up into the driveway, but what was the point of a beach if it wasn't sunny and warm?
There were no other people around. Which meant no children to play with. Kagome breathed out into her scarf, feeling it warm her chin. She'd have to deal with it.
Taking the older woman's offered hand in her mitten one, she glumly followed her into the sleepy house. Various smells of old books, incense and heated dinners wafted to her nose. Kagome didn't mind that so much. Yet even inside the house, she kept her scarf and mittens on, sitting near the lit fire and repressing a shiver. It was so chilly, even inside the house!
When it was time for bed, Great Aunt Mio offered to read her a certain story.
"What are Kelpies?" Kagome asked curiously when the woman mentioned the name.
"They're beautiful water horses. But you can only see them if you leave your heart open while looking out at the ocean," Mio winked.
"How do you do that?" she mumbled sceptically, settling down deeper into the bedding, clutching a knitted blanket close. Her tiny toes curled, rendered toasty from the hot water bottle Aunt Mio had slid at the foot of the bed.
"Hm," thinking for a moment, Mio gazed out of a dark window. "Maybe if you let your thoughts drift away a little, and gaze at the waves with a clear mind, you might see something good. Be careful though; don't ever climb onto their back. Otherwise, they'll pull you under the cold waters and eat you!"
----
Sliding the straps of her shopping bag into the crook of her arm, Kagome balanced her phone and coffee in both hands, hurrying up the sandy outside steps of the rundown hotel she'd taken a room in. The building sat facing the ocean, situated within walking distance to the beach. Considering this, the room price had been a steal.
"Hey, Kagome!" Taro greeted, fiddling with a fishing pole while sitting on a step.
Finishing her conversation on the phone, Kagome lowered it from her ear. "How's it going, squirt? Any luck?"
"Nah, nothing. I caught zilch!" he pouted. "It's like the ocean hates me or something."
"Heh, keep at it, practice makes perfect and all that," she wrestled out her hotel key, climbing the steps and passing him by.
"Was that your Mom on the phone?" the dark-haired child blinked up at her.
Kagome hesitated. "Y-yeah," she muttered, pausing. "Why?"
"My Dad said that even though you're a good guest and everything, he kind of wonders why you're here. I thought maybe you were a rich orphan who travelled around Japan."
She arched a brow, "a rich orphan, huh?"
Taro lifted a shoulder, fiddling with his fishing line. With a sigh, Kagome scrambled for an excuse. "You caught me, I'm travelling."
"My Dad said you're a bit old for travelling-"
"I'm 28?!"
"-that it's something only students do."
"Your Dad says a lot," Kagome gritted out, whirling on her heel and storming up the stairs. She thought it had been a perfectly valid excuse.
"Oh! We're having stew tonight! You're welcome to join us!" he called after her.
"No thanks!"
Quickly entering the building and hurrying to her room, Kagome shut the door behind her. Leaning against it heavily, she sighed.
She'd totally nearly slipped up then.
"Actually, Taro- I'm here to meet with my childhood sweetheart. We're getting married in a few days because I agreed to owing him a favour as a dumb kid and it's a binding agreement type of thing- only he refuses to tell me what our wedding entails or how we'd make it work since he's a supernatural ocean monster. So! I'm really confused and kinda annoyed with him. Yeah, that about sums it up," Kagome nodded.
Time to de-stress.
She ran herself a nice warm bath, preparing everything for some serious self-care 'me' time. She'd been a ball of nerves ever since leaving home with a vague excuse about meeting a friend near Shirahama.
Opening a bottle of wine, she took a swig from the bottle before closing it. "Whew," she whistled, vibrating with tension. She wondered if these were pre-wedding jitters.
Staring outside towards the vast ocean, her brows knitted.
Shaking herself, Kagome decided she desperately needed to relax. Sesshoumaru was vague, he always had been. She half wondered if he refused to clarify anything because he enjoyed her squirming.
Passing by the bathroom on her way to pick up a fresh set of clothes from her bedroom- she halted- quickly backtracking.
The lights were dimmed, candles flickering to create a warm glow like little spotlights within the cozy bathroom. Steam fogged up mirror surfaces, obscuring the sight of the bathtub until Kagome leaned around the corner, groaning at the sight.
"No."
Sesshoumaru looked up from where he lounged within comforting hot water, white puffy bubbles barely concealing his lower half, magenta stripes disappearing into cloud-like cover. One leg bent at the knee, his other thigh sprawled out, foot hanging off the edge of the tub. Both arms rested upon the sides, trickles of moisture rolling down his chest and defined abdomen, silver hair with a couple of water reeds caught in the stands plastered to alabaster flesh. His skin was very faintly dappled, like sunlight playing upon the bottom of a seafloor, smooth as stone.
"Hm?"
"I said; no," Kagome bristled, leaning against the threshold with her hip. "Not ready yet. I've still got time. I'm also not in the mood for your shenanigans- that is my bathwater. Those are my scented candles you're enjoying! Those were meant for me!"
The inhuman creature languidly twisted open the lid of her sugar body scrub. He gave the white tub a delicate sniff. "You certainly enjoy your moisturiser," he drawled, setting it aside. Intent golden eyes landed on her, smiling in that infuriating way she'd come to both like and find vexing during the years she'd known him.
"There is no need to be so possessive of your luxurious bath time. By all means, you are welcome to join me."
Kagome eased closer. "That's mighty generous of you-"
"Thank you."
"But this was a solo intended 'me time' so if you could just-" she reached for the bath plug chain.
A wet, pale hand captured hers mid-air.
Sesshoumaru's devastatingly, unnaturally handsome features loomed close. Water droplets clung to his lashes, and when he blinked, they landed upon striped cheeks.
With a single tug, he yanked Kagome down- forcing her to straddle his lap.
Water sloshed loudly, swaying in the tub.
Squeaking, Kagome steadied herself with a freehand on his cool, sturdy shoulder. His skin gleamed for a moment like the surface of a pool touched by sunlight. It made it impossible to forget that this was not his true form.
Kagome felt his cock stir under the water without stimulation, resting against her thigh.
She bit her lip, torn between smiling and growling. "It's a very snug squeeze with both of us in here."
"I believe we can make it work."
Blushing, Kagome sighed when pale lips brushed the pulse of her neck, feather-light. You said that the first time we had sex, when I wondered if our bodies were even compatible.
And it was happening again, her greedy arms sliding around broad shoulders.
Every time he paid a visit, something like this would occur. Sesshoumaru didn't have to do much. He'd appear in a pool, lounging by a stream, river or pond.
Just a few choice words and an implication here and there, maybe a kiss or two and Kagome drowned in him.
She indulged despite the knowledge that he remained tight-lipped about important things. Alarming, life-changing things.
Their lips met- and the shock of it never failed to take her breath away. He felt so strange, like the sensation of kissing a cold breeze that bit at your mouth with frost yet soothed it all at once.
Sesshoumaru's wet hand curled in dark hair, pulling away to look at her with calm golden eyes. Nothing disturbed them, not one ripple. They remained an ever unblemished surface of a sunny lake.
"You have a scant few days until we wed, my bride."
Kagome touched his hand, heart constricting. "Yes."
"Will you run from me and the promise you made to this one?" he murmured, licking the shell of her ear.
She shivered, recovering enough to hum flippantly, "no. I know it's pointless. You can't outrun water when it's everywhere and in everything."
Sesshoumaru leaned in to gently kiss her lowered eyelids. "I had hoped you would come willingly, out of your own desire."
"Sorry for not being enthusiastic about drowning," she smirked.
He flashed pearly white teeth. "Now who said anything about that happening?"
"Only every book about Kelpies."
"Hn, victims maybe. But those books have no knowledge of what happens to our brides," he uttered, claws scraping deceptively soft down the back of her neck.
Kagome trembled, embarrassed by her body flaring alive. "A pity then that I've had to rely on books to try and get some answers for what married life will be like to you- only all I find is death, death and oh-! A side helping of death. One passage helpfully described you dragging a victim below the water, eating them- and then flinging their entrails onto the riverbank."
Smooth palms settled on the curve of her ass, rocking her against him slowly, unhurriedly. Ever a deep, lulling lagoon of ease and poise. Her personal siren song. "A little trust goes a long way."
Arching her back, Kagome peeled off her shirt, tossing it away and working to unclasp her bra. "If I trusted you implicitly you'd find me predictable."
She knew not to completely trust the caprice of a predator. Danger always lurked beneath his unruffled gaze. That was just how it was when courting a creature from the deep. Nonetheless, she cupped his cheek. "But still- some answers are needed, Sesshoumaru. I know this will be binding, some type of magic will probably be involved," she muttered, raising her eyes to his. "I won't run from my promise or any consequences it might have to wed you, but you're leaving me in the dark and I don't like it. After 20 years of knowing each other, aren't I owed an explanation about my own wedding?"
He hummed, focusing on her face while assisting her with the stubborn bra. "It is part of the wedding ritual. You must trust me implicitly without my having told you the process. You have...affection for me," he said softly. "Let that be your guide. All will be well after the wedding."
"So the wedding is like a test?" Kagome arched a brow, liking that even less.
"You will be gifted with something my kind consider sacred above all things if you pass."
Long fingers deftly unhooked the bra clasp with practised ease. Kagome peeled the blue lace away, tossing it aside, "...and if I fail?"
Golden eyes fixed on her nipples, lightly rubbing one and watching it harden, skin pebbling with goosebumps. "You will not."
She shivered, clutching onto his hand to halt his ministrations. "How can you be so sure?"
Sesshoumaru squeezed her fingers in a painfully human reassurance he'd learned from being in her company.
"Because I trust you, my foolish Bride."
Blue eyes grew slightly misty, and she blinked the silly tears away. Kagome released him, arching into his continued touch. A clawed thumb lightly scraped and toyed with her nipple.
He smirked, inhaling her breathy sigh. "I never tire of your human reactions."
Kagome stifled a moan, pressing sloppy, open-mouthed kisses down his throat. The lack of gills revealed how little he truly used this inhuman form; it was just for her benefit.
She intended to make use of it.
Sesshoumaru easily plucked her skirt off without Kagome having moved an inch, and she squeaked, watching the severed material fall from his fingers carelessly onto the rug.
"H-hey!"
He arched a brow, pinching her breast. "You have no need for it beyond a few more uses at most."
Kagome set her jaw moodily. He was right of course, but still. She gestured to the scented candles. "I like to make the most of what I have."
When he ignored her in favour of stroking her clit, a growl built in her throat. Gripping exquisite silver tresses, she leaned up and kissed him roughly, feeling her panties be dealt with in a similar manner and growling outright.
Sesshoumaru grinned so wide she felt the outline of his teeth against her lips. Kagome nipped him for that- but his teeth were sharper. With a particularly bruising kiss, she tasted copper beading on her lip- which was swiftly claimed by her fiance. Sucking and lapping the blood away, he then delved deep into her mouth with the use of a sinous tongue.
They kissed hard and breathlessly, to the point that when they broke away, both were panting. Kagome fought the urge to wipe her throbbing mouth, having been attacked with bites. Lagoon blue eyes darkened with hunger.
Sesshoumaru chuckled softly, capturing her chin and pressing teeth to the hollow of her throat. "Have you worked up an appetite, my Bride?"
"Maybe a little," gazing at the ceiling, she let her eyes slide shut. Cool lips ghosted her chest- teeth sinking into her breast.
"Ngh!" she gasped, shuddering in his hold. The flat of his tongue soothed the throbbing mark, smiling against flushed skin. Trying to wrestle back control, Kagome rocked lean hips forward, reaching down between them.
Stroking his cock beneath the surface, she minded dying bubbles aside to reveal a patch of white hair. Kagome slid off Sesshoumaru's lap- much to his protest- leaning after her breast with bloodied teeth.
Kagome pushed him back with a huff, ducking her head down and grabbing exotically striped hips to raise them slightly, sucking the head of his cock into her mouth.
Sesshoumaru went completely still- soon shuddering with an open, lascivious moan that exposed sharp canines. Bobbing her head to take more, Kagome hollowed her cheeks, sucking and running her tongue over the underside of his cock.
"Hah- you never fail to amuse me," claws curled in dark hair.
Kagome broke away to nip his thigh. "Amuse?"
"Satisfy," he amended.
"Better," smiling, she went right back to pleasuring him with her mouth, sucking with loud, heinous noises and squeaking when Sesshoumaru bucked hard- holding her down to take his cock to the back of her mouth. Luckily she anticipated this, a similar thing happened every time. The second she gagged, he stopped, drawing back to rut softly.
Kagome breathed through her nose, pumping his cock with a free hand. The scent of peppermint candles became cloying.
"Why do you attend me if- hah- you hate me. I wonder," he panted, perhaps intending to tease.
She didn't know. Hate wasn't accurate, not at all. If circumstances were different, Kagome felt she could've loved him openly by now.
Stimulating him further, Kagome wrapped her tongue around him and accepted the wild thrusts, bobbing her head to meet his movements that trashed the water, squeezing blue eyes shut. Pale hair brushed her nose.
She jolted as he released without warning. Sesshoumaru let out a thin, hissing noise, teeth gnashing together. Kagome pulled away, swallowing and panting raggedly.
Distractedly wiping at her chin, she was caught off guard. A tongue delved inside her mouth. Sesshoumaru had no scruples about tasting himself, scooping her back onto his lap. In almost no time, his hard cock that she'd worked so diligently to soften- hardened once more against her thigh.
The Kelpie wrapped her up in a tight embrace, crashing their chests together.
"You were-" he said in between kisses, "very good at that. I thought I detected a few new things about it compared with the last time. Have you been with anyone else?"
Kagome flushed red, cupping striped cheeks. Brushing her tongue against his, she sighed against his punishing mouth. "No."
"Why the sigh?"
Because she'd tried. She tried to live a normal human life but all attempts had been unsuccessful. She smiled wanly, picking water reeds out of glittering silver hair. "You're the only one I want to touch, and the person who I want touching me."
Citrine eyes cracked open slightly wider. Slit pupils dilated, and Sesshoumaru tipped his head to one side. "Good. This one has not touched another either. You remain my first and only."
Blushing cherry red, Kagome gnawed on her bottom lip.
"Embarrassed? I thought it was a good first time."
"We were terrible at it, don't lie," she giggled quietly.
Deadly fingers stroked her ribs, before Sesshoumaru's hands splayed wide at her spine, bending her backwards in the tub to lean over her. "Trust me," he uttered against her lips, before claiming them.
Kagome gripped him tight, repressing a yelp. Water closed over their heads.
Kelpies were strange creatures, she'd found. Dragons made sense- they breathed fire and could fly. Leprechauns had a pot of gold. Vampires drank blood.
But Kelpies? They were murderous water horses who lured people into locks, rivers and seas to drown them, sure. However, the bulk of their power remained elusive. Secret.
Sesshoumaru continually took her by surprise with his abilities so she'd long stopped counting them. Provided some body of water was available, he could appear to her anywhere. No matter the country.
She'd never seen him separated from water. In his true form, he'd leapt through the shallows of the tide, but never set a physical foot on dry land.
In times like these- with her head submerged in his domain beneath the surface- it was like he bent the laws of reality. Instead of a cramped pool of bathwater, Kagome found herself arched backwards within a vast, bottomless pocket of warm water. She could've swum if she wanted. Dived down into the darkness.
Sesshoumaru kept a tight grip on her, mouth locked over hers. When he breathed out- air filled Kagome's lungs. Bizarrely, and in keeping with his fever-dream powers, Sesshoumaru remained able to kneel within her tub. She could feel open air fanning on her damp knees by his hips.
Possessive hands hooked her legs around his waist, lips curving against her mouth. He sank his hips down. A cock nestled and slid inside her.
Blue eyes squeezed shut.
Holding on around broad shoulders with a death grip, dark hair danced around them while he began moving, bucking smoothly, cock hitting a deep spot that shot stars through Kagome's system.
She squeezed his nape, signalling for more air, which he provided. Bubbles escaped the side of his mouth and Sesshoumaru adjusted her bottom lip with a brush of his clawed thumb, thrusting continually.
It felt a little surreal to know she lay so close to death. He held her fragile life within his hands. One turn of his mood and the Kelpie could give in to his nature and trap her beneath the surface, happily drowning her.
Sesshoumaru's grip stayed firm, golden eyes sliding open. Attentive. Watchful. He seemed to sense what pace she could take, always adjusting their lip-lock if a gasp disrupted her airflow.
Her inner walls clenched tight, urging his cock deeper. Kagome's toes curled while giving muffled cries. Strands of silver kissed her cheek as they melded with black locks within the current.
His thrusts became a little more urgent, ramming inside her so hard he trashed their bodies within the water. Bubbles raced around them and Kagome bit nails into the flesh of his back, leaving tiny crescent moons. Bucking her hips hard to meet him half-way, she gave a muffled cry, mouth opening too wide as she came- feeling water and cum flood inside her mouth and cunt respectively as he released soon after.
Sesshoumaru swayed upright, dragging her up. Breaking the surface of the water, Kagome sputtered and coughed, clutching him tight. Thankfully it had just been a mouthful.
Trembling violently, she panted. Her body twitched from the aftershocks of her orgasm.
Despite how little it made sense from a survival perspective, her thundering heart and quivering inner walls had only amped up the thrill, rendering her dangerous orgasm all the sweeter.
Tender lips brushed her brow. "I have you," he uttered, palms rubbing her back with calm reassurance.
Kagome buried her face in his dappled shoulder.
Yes, you do.
Remaining naked and vulnerable in his arms for a while, Kagome drank in his scent. It wasn't unique, smelling more like the ocean than anything else. Kagome felt comforted by it nonetheless. She then kissed him briefly before flashing an impish grin. Grabbing the chain of her bathplug, she yanked it out.
Golden eyes flattened. "That was uncalled for."
"So was holding me underwater," she hummed, giving a little wave. "I'll be seeing you."
"Indeed," Sesshoumaru grabbed her close, the water level sinking lower.
Crushing their mouths together in a heated rush, he gripped her ass and stroked the curve of it, squeezing and rocking her against him anew.
Kagome gasped against his mouth, becoming affected all over again, heat rushing to her core. Sesshoumaru had enough time to shoot his own mischievous grin her way before all bathwater escaped down the drain.
"Meet me on the beach in two days," was all he said, his image and form becoming water in her hands- falling through the gaps in her fingers and splashing into the tub and her thighs.
He was gone.
Kagome panted, cheeks red. Sometimes she wondered if he'd ever been there at all.
Standing and ripping a towel from a waiting rack, she wrapped it around herself, gingerly stepping out of the tub and wincing as evidence of him trailed down shiny thighs.
Well, that was one way of showing proof of his existence.
---
The following few days after reaching her Great Aunt's place were boring and repetitive. After exhausting all exploration in the house, Kagome had wandered outside. She put on her sensible boots, which were warm and snug. Clothed in layers upon layers, she fixed her scarf and stepped outside with a brief goodbye to Mio. She then padded down the slight slope that led to the beach, which was practically her Great Aunt's back garden.
Mio had warned her not to walk far along the beach but after several days of it now, Kagome felt her caution fade. There was nothing to worry about.
She glanced behind her at the footsteps in the sand and made a few patterns, before looking out at the sea. Wondering how to leave her heart open like it said to in the Kelpie book, she tried picturing nice things. Butterflies were nice, so she thought of them. Cakes were good, puppies, archery was especially fun, summer dresses, and...friends.
Thinking about her friends at the old house she'd left behind, Kagome felt a brief wince of sadness. She supposed the nicest thing of all would be to have a friend again.
A splash caught her attention. Kagome blinked and looked further up the coast.
Was it her imagination or were the waves moving unnaturally?
She waited for a long moment but nothing happened. Seagulls cried up above, the world carrying on as normal. Shaking herself, Kagome noticed a stretch of beach further ahead towards the waves, like a tiny island. Something small wriggled upon it.
Brows drawing together, she hurried closer.
Hopping over streams of seawater that stretched around the beach like rivers, Kagome jogged to a fish caught in a plastic beer can holder. It wriggled about on the wet sand, flipping over this way and that, gasping.
Leaning down, Kagome yanked off her mittens to catch the slippery fish. Very carefully, she slipped the plastic off, smiling. Straightening, she held the fish as gently as possible, guiding it back into lapping seawater that licked around her ankles.
"Careful next time, Fishy."
Watching it swim away beneath the surface, Kagome smiled, turning back to the beach- only to gasp.
The tide swept in much too quick. Her tiny island had shrunk- the once crossable river on the sands having widened, claiming the sands between herself and Mio's house. Water rushed high around her waist, and Kagome hurriedly tried wading back.
"Aunt Mio!" she cried, voice breaking with fear.
There was no movement from the house. Great Aunt Mio had likely gotten distracted with her 3 pm yoga stretches, serene music blasting loudly in her room.
Unable to swim, Kagome frantically put all her energy into trying to fight the current that now stole her feet out from under her. Waves rolled in, swaying above her head.
Squealing as she became lost to the twisting sea, Kagome lost her sense of direction. Tossed about helplessly, all she could do was kick her legs and hoped she was heading the right way up. Managing to break the surface again, she cried for help, failing and dipping beneath again while gulping salty seawater.
'Help me! Please, someone!' she thought.
Managing to claw her way up once more, Kagome gasped and sputtered, blinking.
The shape of a horse's head took form from the water further away, before the rest of its body followed. The young horse (which Kagome remembered to be called a foal) drifted through the waves, diving into the white arches and melding into them, before resurfacing.
Kagome didn't have much time to be wonder-struck, sinking beneath once more.
Hair brushed her fingers, something nudging itself into her arms. Kagome latched on tight, gasping as she found herself being yanked upwards, resurfacing.
Her breath hitched, amazed to see the white foal, arms wrapped around its neck. It glided easily through the current, soon trotting to the shallows of the shore, shaking water droplets across wet sands but stopping at the shoreline.
Coughing hard, Kagome crumpled to the ground. She quivered, looking up at the foal.
It tilted its head slightly, eyes unnervingly gold. Kagome remained frozen, catching her breath, short dark hair stuck to her cheeks. She slowly managed to inch closer hesitantly, still overwhelmed. "H-hey there?" she tried. "Thank you for rescuing me."
The foal's figure shuddered- and Kagome gaped in alarm when it folded downwards into the water- only for its image to ripple. It shifted like an optical illusion, a white shirt moving into place as a boy straightened in its place.
He stood, pale hair short like hers. He wore an oversized crumpled shirt that fell over his knees, rolled up sleeves hanging over his wrists. He pushed them back and sniffed primly, wiping some dirt from his bare legs.
"How did you do that?" Kagome breathed.
Golden eyes slid to her, assessing. His features seemed to change slightly, looking between one moment and the next more Japanese than before. His lips parted. "You...speak differently from the humans here," he said carefully in her language.
"Uh- yes," she blinked rapidly.
He hummed, gaze drawing away thoughtfully. "Strange."
"Not as strange as what you just did!" Kagome stood to hurry over. She picked up his clawed hand, marvelling at it. "You were just a horsey!"
He shook off her grip in favour of grasping hers and assessing the bluntness of her nails. "Oh, that. My true form," the words were imparted easily. "Humans do not have such a thing, you only have these fleshy containers, do you not?" he asked, holding her pinky and shaking it for emphasis.
Kagome burst into a giggle, tears collecting in her eyes and rolling down pale cheeks.
The boy stared. "Why are you...leaking?"
"O-oh, I was scared," she tried to wipe them away, shuddering. "Really scared. But you helped me- so now I'm happy. I'm feeling a lot!"
"I see."
Kagome lunged forward and captured him in a hug that had him stiffening, going ramrod straight while she sobbed for a little while. The tide played about their feet, seaweed brushing their ankles. Eventually he pushed at her forehead, wrinkling his nose while freeing himself and stepping back.
"Females are odd," he mumbled, clearing his throat. "If you are truly grateful, you will not mind fulfilling a favour to this one."
"Sure," she nodded easily, holding onto his sleeve. "I don't mind since, without you, I'd probably be a goner. What do you want?"
He frowned softly. "I...do not know yet. My kind are linked with the Fae, and they always require favours in return for a good turn."
"That's okay. I've got more than a week left here, so you can decide before I have to leave," she nodded, squeezing his hand. "I'm Kagome. What's your name?"
Golden eyes searched her face, eerily unblinking, and yet Kagome didn't feel afraid. She felt awe- and a dangerous kind of fascination that would stay with her for many years.
"Sesshoumaru. I think that is what you'd call it in your language."
----
Rising early after a nice sleep and stretching pleasantly sore muscles, Kagome padded into the bathroom to freshen up. Stuffing a toothbrush into her mouth and filling the sink with hot water, she wandered away to place some bread into her toaster. After flitting from the kitchen, she paused mid-brush, picking up something resting by her filled sink.
A new scented candle.
Ocean Breeze, huh? she snorted, placing it down with a fond smile. Thanks, you jerk.
He usually did that type of thing. Little gifts he thought she'd like. They hadn't always been the sweetest of items. It had taken a while to try to explain to his pre-teen self that bottlecaps were not a priceless treasure.
When Sesshoumaru had tried gifting her a priceless pocket-watch still vaguely tinged red from the blood of one of his victims- she'd baulked and not spoken to him for a few weeks.
There was no shying away from the truth though. Kelpies took people to watery graves.
The couple didn't speak about it much but it had become an unwritten rule when they'd grown older that he never show up wearing clothes when meeting with her.
Because when Sesshoumaru wore clothes it meant he'd stolen them off a corpse.
He'd gotten the idea after that, and brought back a pearl necklace he'd been working on for a while.
Kagome opened her suitcase and retrieved it, rolling a few smooth ones between her thumb. They gleamed, even without a source of light. "Better than the other pearl necklaces you've given me during sex," she snarked, fastening it around her neck.
Using the last of her time as a single woman, Kagome decided to take a stroll through the streets despite the gloomy day. She peered into window displays, looking at cute dresses and designer rings.
Touching her necklace, she sighed. Laughter rang out nearby, and blue eyes followed a young couple that strolled by, arm in arm. They'd clearly just been to a café together.
I can't do that with Sesshoumaru, she thought sadly. They couldn't do ordinary couple things. Little reminders like that were why, sometimes, Kagome thought it would be easier if she was a sea creature. He couldn't set foot on land, and she could only swim for so long. If they couldn't meet halfway except for brief appearances in water, she wished she could go to him completely or vice versa.
Shaking herself, Kagome went inside the shop; Purchasing a sterling silver necklace with a good chunk of her money.
She wasn't sure why but a sense of possessiveness compelled her to. If they couldn't wear rings, they could at least have this.
By the time she stepped foot outside again, overcast skies had bled into heavy rainclouds. Droplets pattered onto the crown of her head, and Kagome heard the people around her groan or squeal, ducking into buildings as a torrential downpour battered the streets.
Smiling, Kagome hurried away, noting the privacy of a location around the back of a building secluded with some enclosing shrubbery. It was away from the main street, maybe it would be fine. Before she could even think to whisper his name, cold hands found her waist.
The breath rushed from her lungs, back meeting the wall of the building- lips covered by firm ones. Sesshoumaru smiled at her, standing naked in broad daylight within heavy rainfall. Droplets caught in his hair, running down pointed ears and running over his chest.
Kagome clutched him close, returning the kiss. Opening her mouth, she moaned, sucking on his tongue. He purred against her in return.
"Y-you're so-" she kissed him again, "clingy. Can't you keep away?"
"I must take these opportunities when they come, my Bride. You know that."
Kagome smiled, "speaking of-" she wrestled out the silver necklace. "To um...match with mine? Like wedding rings?" she gestured to her pearls.
Golden eyes widened, his wet bangs hanging over them slightly. He warmed, nodding slightly. Lowering his head, he knelt to allow her to slip it on, securing the clasp at the back. Lingering close, Kagome kissed his wet shoulder, tasting seawater.
"Clingy," he lightly accused, rushing in to shove her hips back. He hitched up her skirt, kissing her clothed sex hungrily.
Gasping, Kagome shoved a hand over her mouth, hissing. "S-sesshoumaru!"
"As stated-" her panties were slid to her ankles "-we should make the most of the opportunity," silken tones purred, clamping his mouth over her sex. Kagome cried out into her palm, shuddering.
While a skilful tongue swirled and pried against her inner walls, sucking and lapping at her, she began rocking against his tongue. No sense in wasting time. The rain could stop at any minute.
Sesshoumaru chuckled, hitching her thigh to spread wider, brushing his nose against her clit. Mewling, her hips stuttered, silently begging for more.
With an enigmatic smirk, he calmly but intently rubbed at her clit with a thumb, continuing to pleasure her. He took her mad squirming and rutting against his mouth in stride, allowing Kagome to ride his tongue to orgasm.
She wailed loudly, heavy rainfall masking the sound.
Panting and licking decadently at her escaping juices, Sesshoumaru managed to look up at her with a starving gleam in his eye before the waning rain stole him away. His image faded, lips disappearing from against her thigh.
Kagome found herself leaning after him, heart-clenching. Left alone with only scant raindrops that gradually cleared, she gazed after dark clouds longingly.
Soon, she thought.
----
"I have decided upon a favour," the boy said to Kagome on her last day in Scotland.
She paused, sitting upon a lone boardwalk and watching him gaze up at her with unblinking eyes. "For saving me? Sure," she nodded. "You'll have to make it quick though, you know Great Aunt Mio wants me back in-"
"Marry me."
Kagome gaped. "Huh? Why do you wanna marry?!"
Sesshoumaru disappeared beneath the wooden structure, swimming softly. "Because I must take a bride one day and the thought of wedding you is pleasing. You are not awful company to be around, for a girl."
"Gee thanks," Kagome tried to follow him, crawling along the planks to glimpse him drifting below in between the gaps.
"Your mane is fairly pretty."
"My 'hair' is pretty, yes," she preened. "But that's not a good reason to marry!"
"Your eyes are like my home."
"W-what?"
"They resemble the ocean."
"Ah," Kagome blushed, "that's nice."
When he said nothing more, dark brows drew together. Kagome climbed off the boardwalk, landing in the waist-deep water and wading beneath the shadows of the boardwalk.
His eyes lured her closer, glowing luminous in the dark space. "I hear you, sometimes. When humans look at the ocean and broadcast their thoughts so loud, I know they are close. It is how my kind find prey."
Kagome was too young to really understand what he meant by that. She took his cool hand and squeezed it. "What do I say?"
"You are frustrated that adults do not listen to you. Even when you scream so loudly within your own head," he uttered, tipping his head slightly, white hair swaying to reveal a pointed ear. "But I would hear you, even with a whisper. It is because of this...that I feel you would be successful in passing my ancestor's test of trust."
She blinked rapidly, a confused flutter in her chest. "...I know I promised you, but I can't marry until I'm an adult. Only adults marry," Kagome nodded sensibly.
"How long will that take?"
"Umm...I don't know? 20 years? Then I'll do it," she agreed.
Sesshoumaru squeezed her hand back, eyes firm, voice binding. "Then 20 years to the day is when we shall wed."
----
Taro sighed, trudging back from the moonlit beach moodily. Not one catch! He'd even gone to the trouble of sneaking out after hours, hoping the dark waters would improve his luck.
Sighing, he raised his head, blinking at the pale figure drawing closer from the hotel.
White fabric trailed down, the kakeshita hem dragging slightly over the sandy beach. The bride walked with measured steps, clad in a fine shiromuku wedding ensemble gifted to her by her fiance.
Taro stared, speechless and frozen while she drew closer. The hood of her wataboshi lifted just enough, blue eyes connecting with his for a moment. Kagome offered a brief smile, before continuing on undaunted.
She didn't acknowledge him beyond that and Taro couldn't find his voice. Couldn't call out to her. A heavy, pervasive feeling of intrusion rattled his bones. He wasn't supposed to see this. It felt like witnessing a ghost wandering her haunting grounds.
Turning tail, he ran to a high wall situated off the beach, ducking around it to watch.
Kagome stopped at the edge of the shoreline, staring out at the lonely ocean.
From the glitter of moonlight on the horizon, something arose from within shining waters. The outline of it became clearer, a pure white horse plunging through lapping waves.
Kagome's lips twitched despite her nerves and unease.
Galloping to pale shores, the Kelpie raced through shallow water in a wide arch along the beach towards her. His eyes gleamed, pupils slit. As he'd matured, magenta markings had appeared on his pale hide, which transferred whenever Sesshoumaru shapeshifted into a man.
When he halted before her, nostrils flared. Power radiated off him silently, affecting the very air and making mist brush her available skin. His wet mane and long tail sank down, reaching the water and pooling around his legs that remained firmly in the tide.
Sesshoumaru nudged at her face with his nose, nibbling at her traditional veil with unnervingly sharp rows of teeth. 'Remove this. I wish to see your face.'
"How romantic," Kagome smirked. Taking her wataboshi in hand and lifting it off her head, she tossed it aside. "So, what happens now?"
The towering Kelpie gazed at her quietly, ears pricking. His gaze slid down Kagome's body, exhaling slowly in a way that signalled she'd pleased him. 'Climb atop my back, Bride.'
Shaking out her hair from where she'd pinned it into place, Kagome allowed it to fall in rich ebony waves over her shoulders, rounding Sesshoumaru's side. Gripping his sleek mane, she smiled when he lowered himself into the waters, hauling herself onto his back. She noticed the necklace she'd given him had been woven into his hair, and stifled a giggle.
The Kelpie stood, droplets falling to the dragging tide. When he began walking back towards the sea, waves climbing higher around them, Kagome gripped onto his mane tighter.
'Trust, Kagome.'
She swallowed, feeling very sober suddenly. Looking towards the dark waters beckoning them down into their shadowy depths, her stomach squeezed into knots. The dreams came to mind; memories of years upon years having known this creature. How her skin had wrinkled in the water because of how long they'd indulged in the pool. Late night talks at the local park. Messages left in glass bottles.
He craned his neck to look at her with impossibly yellow eyes.
Kagome picked a water reed out his silver strands in a familiar gesture, stroking his dappled back.
"Trust, Sesshoumaru."
He made a low noise of approval, continuing to walk with his head held high. Kagome straightened her back, letting out a shuddering breath and cementing her fate.
The only witness to their marriage ceremony was Taro, who gaped in horror. The Kelpie and his bride walked into the ocean together, black water closing in over their heads.
Nothing resurfaced. Not a ripple disturbed the moonlit surface, the tide rolling as it always did. Taro turned on his heel and bolted, crying out for his father and calling for help.
-----
Many people swept the area that night, a rescue team searching the seafloor.
Twenty-eight-year-old, Kagome Higurashi was never found. Without a body to recover, she was listed as missing. When the authorities notified her Mother, she seemed strangely nonplussed.
Taro miserably kept fishing, though nothing lifted his spirits. He could barely sleep nor eat after what he'd seen, feeling guilty for letting it happen. It wasn't until some locals reported seeing a pair of wild horses on the beach did he liven. Hearing the details, he hurried to the designated spot they'd been spotted.
The same large white steed he'd glimpsed that terrible night thundered through the waves, clearing a path for the horse behind him. The female's black shiny coat and dark curling mane tickled Taro's memory, and a weight lifted from his chest.
He watched them chase one another along the beach until the heavens opened. The Kelpies disappeared mid-gallop within harsh rainfall, leaving no traces of themselves behind save for their lifting cries ringing through Taro's ears.

SessKag Week Day 3: Power and Passion
The first three days of prompts will be combined into a three chapter fic. This is chapter 3 of 3. For Day/Chapter1 click 💚 and for Day/Chapter 2 click 🖤
Summary: In order to solve a most pressing problem without giving in to the pressures of his station, Sesshomaru seeks out the aid of a famed and fabled Nature Goddess living deep in the wilds of the Eastern Lands. She is NOT who he expects, but she solves his problem, and then a few more.
Due to the length of this chapter, please read on AO3
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹Chapter 3 Preview🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
They fell into a rhythm that soothed all the chafed parts of him he’d had bound up and pushed aside for too long.
He hunted and prowled every day, letting both his yoki and instincts loose to flare and flame in the wilderness that surrounded them; he exerted physical effort felling and hauling trees to add space to the Miko’s house; he learned how to build, he read through scrolls and taught himself certain spells when Kagome was busy with something else; he helped her experiment with adding doses of yoki to potions to strengthen them; she taught him how to converse by always having something to say or a question to ask.
His new life, though much less grand and opulent, was easier to breath and move in. There was no yokai court, no advisers, no nobles, no squabbling aristocrats, no competitors looking for any single chink in his armor, any weakness in his form, waiting to pounce the second he had his guard down.
There was only endless possibility… and Kagome.

Do I Remind You of Somewhere You Wanna Be - Part 6 (FIN) (SKW2021D6)
Day 7 - Purple / Free Day
--
Previous Part
--
I Could Get Used to Your Company
--
He'd woken her up with kisses. Slow and languid, until the connection between them had sparked and the mood had surged to an urgent need.
Now, an hour or so later, Kagome was sitting at the kitchen table, a teacup in her hands. Sunlight was streaming in through the paper screen wall and she was snuggled up in a borrowed purple kimono that smelled like Sesshoumaru.
She felt loose and sated, her muscles sore in the most delicious way. And she couldn’t help but grin every time she caught sight of the lovebite on Sesshoumaru’s neck. Which was fairly often, as she was watching him putter around the kitchen with rapt attention.
For one, it was curious seeing him both navigate such modern contraptions like the coffee machine and toaster and be engaged in such a domestic task as putting together a breakfast. The fact that he was only wearing a pair of grey sweatpants didn’t hurt either, his broad back a wonderful display of lean muscle.
Kagome sipped her tea, thinking that she could get used to mornings like this. She didn’t know what this thing between her and Sesshoumaru really was. She knew that her feelings towards him didn’t run as deep as his did towards her. She knew it was much too soon for her to speak of romance. But the potential was there, so tangible she could almost see it shimmer in the air between them.
She was also half-in-love with Sesshoumaru’s house. It was old, built in the traditional style. Just big enough, it had a bright, fully modern kitchen. A spacious bathroom complete with an old-fashioned wooden bathtub and a proper shower. A big Japanese style room in which they’d slept on a futon last night, as Sesshoumaru didn’t own a bed. A small tatami-matted study, where on a traditional low table sat a very high-end contemporary laptop.
Done with the breakfast preparations, Sesshoumaru walked over to the table and set down a serving of toast and fruit and miso soup. Kagome met his eyes and smiled. Just like this moment here and now, the house itself was a perfect blend of the past and the present.
And while that connection to the past was a welcome comfort, the ache was gone. For the first time in a very long time, Kagome didn’t yearn to be anywhere but here and now.
With Sesshoumaru.
He sat down across from her and offered her a smile. It was brief but sweet and it took Kagome’s breath away to have him gaze at her with such unexpected tenderness.
Even with everything that had happened between them in the last twelve hours, it was hard to fathom that Sesshoumaru could have been harbouring feelings for her for such a long time. But now, she was starting to believe it. How could she not, when he sat there, smiling at her, his youki snaking in the air to brush against her spine.
They focused on their breakfast, eating in companionable silence. He had a steady, calm presence, his was a company Kagome felt no need to fill with chatter. With him, she could simply be.
Finally, as she was sipping her second cup of tea and he was finishing his coffee, Kagome spoke.
“So… do we have any plans for today?”
“Nothing in particular. My schedule is very free. Is there anything you want to do?”
“Not really. I was just wondering.” Kagome took a sip of her tea, then tilted her head. “So what do you do exactly? Do you have a job?”
Sesshoumaru shrugged. “I read a lot. Go out on walks. I like to cook. I don’t have a job as such, but I fiddle with finance.”
“Finance?” Kagome echoed. She wondered why she was so surprised by that.
“Yes. I managed a few investment portfolios, including my own.”
“I suppose you like maths,” Kagome muttered into her tea, caught between exasperation and amusement.
“Immensely,” he replied. “What do you do?”
“I help out at my family’s shrine and work as a tour guide at one of the more famous shrines in Tokyo.”
Sesshoumaru’s grin was so wide his fangs gleamed. “A miko in truth.”
“I guess so,” Kagome said, the corner of her lips curving up in reply.
“Well, as we are on the topic of shrines, should you wish to do something today, we could go and visit Inariyama,” Sesshoumaru suggested. “That was your intention originally, yes? Before we got… sidetracked.”
Sidetracked, indeed!  Kagome shook her head at his smug tone. She’d forgotten all about Inariyama shrine and Marutomi-san.
“It was, yeah. That’s why I came here, to begin with. To meet Marutomi-san.”
Sesshoumaru’s youki flared and he stood at attention.
“Marutomi-san?”
“Yeah, he’s an old friend of my grandfather’s. We’re… penpals of sort. He used to correspond with my grandfather, and I kind of took up the mantle of letter-writing after my grandfather passed.”
Sesshoumaru blinked. Stared at her long and hard, his golden gaze steady.
“The kitsune has been corresponding with you? And knew your grandfather?”
Kagome’s heart skipped a beat or two, her breath stalled in her lungs.
“Kit– Marutomi-san is a youkai?! A kitsune?!”
Sesshoumaru shook his head. “No, Kagome. He is your kitsune.”
“My…?” Tears burned in Kagome’s eyes as she clutched her chest with a trembling hand.
“He goes by Marutomi Shichirou, currently, but the kanji he uses have not changed, though he’s made some additions,” Sesshoumaru explained, his expression wry. “Such as borrowing one of my own.”
The world blurred as the tears started to spill. And then she laughed. A sound that was one part a sob and all parts incredulous.
“Shippou. Marutomi-san is Shippou.”
Sesshoumaru nodded.
Kagome reached across the table, grasped his hand in hers.
“Can we go? Please?”
“Of course. We can go right now if you wish.”
Kagome wiped her tears away with shaky fingers “Thank you. Yes, I’d love to go.”
“Before we do, there is one thing you should know,” Sesshoumaru said.
“What is it?” Kagome asked. Nothing would keep her away now, knowing that Shippou was alive and well.
“Inariyama is not truly a shrine. It is more of a gateway,” he told her.
“A gateway to where?” Kagome asked, intrigued.
“To a sanctuary. A community where youkai who cannot or will not live among humans reside in secret.”
Kagome bit her lip.
“Will I be able to visit?”
“Of course.” Sesshoumaru squeezed her hand, then brought it to his lips and pressed a soft kiss over her knuckles. “You will be fine with me.”
Kagome’s heart swelled. Tears threatened again, though this time for a wholly different reason.
She slid her hand from his, then jumped from her chair and walked around the table. She wrapped her arms tight around him, buried her face into the crook of his neck, her nose brushing against the lovebite she’d left on him.
“I know,” she breathed against his skin, as Sesshoumaru’s warm hand settled on her hip, as his fingers soothingly stroked her sleep-tangled hair. She tilted her head to meet his eyes, to give him a brilliant smile.
She did not know what the future would bring, what feelings might still develop. But she knew that she was looking towards the future now, no longer stealing yearning glances at the past. And most importantly, she knew where she wanted to be – and with whom.
“I’ll be fine with you,” Kagome agreed, the simple words a promise.

Merely a Formality (A03 | Dokuga | FFnet)
While working at Jinenji’s farm, Kagome comes across an unresponsive Sesshomaru. She’s always been the type to help first and ask questions later. How was Kagome supposed to know that by caring for Sesshomaru she was essentially staking her claim on him as her mate?
A oneshot written for SessKag Week 2021 Day 5: Blue - Luck / Calmness & Stability / Femininity & Fidelity
Excerpt: Kagome is on her hands and knees. Dirt is trapped under her fingernails and sweat beads on her brow.
In the past year that she’s lived on Jinenji’s farm, Kagome has learned to love the smell of fresh rain and ground soil. These are signs of a healthy harvest. The more plants they grow, the more medicine they can make, and the more people they can help.
She plans to deliver a batch to her friends in Edo and another to the northern wolf tribe. The numbing agent Jinenji concocted last month will certainly help Kenji. Kouga and Ayame’s pup is in the early stages of teething, which means no one in the pack is sleeping. Kagome is sure they’ll appreciate the gift.
With a sharp yank, she rids the field of a particularly stubborn cluster of dandelions. Weeding isn’t hard but it takes time. She knows she should have woken up earlier to get a head start on the field. Sleeping in may have felt good but now she’s stuck under the heat of the rising sun.
As she pauses to wipe her forehead clean, Kagome spots a figure approaching the farm. She squints, initially mistaking the visitor for an old friend.
When the demoness draws closer, Kagome realizes she isn’t the Lord of the Western Lands, though she has a hunch they are related.
Her suspicions are confirmed a moment later when the woman addresses her.

Sesskag Week: Day One ‘Green’
Tumblr media
Title: Stop me if you’ve heard this one before
Summary: Kagome witnesses Inuyasha and Kikyo in another loving embrace and runs away, stumbling straight into Sesshoumaru that moonlit night. (My attempt at an old fandom trope.)

AN: I just wanted to try my hand at an old sesskag fandom trope that I reckon was in the height of popularity from the early 2000s- 2010s. Other tropes from that time included Abusive Inuyasha, no one knowing what the canon end or final battle was like, and mokomoko being sentient. Ah...old memories. If this fic feels like it's from a bygone era, well...that was the intention lol. For Sesskag Week Day One - Green.
-----
Standing frozen stiff, Kagome stared ahead. A gasp remained locked behind her teeth. Slim fingers dug into the bark of a tree she'd hidden behind, gazing around the trunk towards a couple cradling each other tightly.
This was the second time. The first had hit harder inside her chest, the slam of heartbreak cracking the fragile shell of first love that had closed around her heart.
But she'd made a promise to Inuyasha; to remain by his side. She needed to get over this haze of green misting her eyes, the jealousy roaring through her veins. Inuyasha and Kikyo used to be lovers, it was perfectly natural and humane to want to hold his lost love.
That didn't make it any easier to see.
In fact, the emotion welling up in her throat threatened to burst louder than before. Fearing the strength of her own reaction, Kagome stepped back. She took another, then another, whirling around to flee into pitch-black darkness.
I wanted to be more mature about this, she thought. The tears stinging her eyes bespoke of her anger, worry, and heartache- like an old wound had been freshly ripped open anew.
Kagome couldn't be understanding or mature, not like poised Lady Kikyo likely could. Kagome was 15, emotive and sparking. She was fire, passion, a roaring flame of anger that could climb so high nothing would stifle it.
Stumbling over tree roots in the dark, quiet woods, Kagome ran blind. When she felt that she'd covered enough ground, far away from the lover's embrace, she stopped abruptly in the middle of a meadow. Sweat beading her temple and throat burning, she threw back her head.
And yelled.
She threw all turbulent emotions into it, crying so loud her windpipe protested. The noise became horse and broken before she stopped.
Standing within that moonlit clearing, Kagome caught her breath, tears threatening to spill over.
"Must you make such noise in the dead of night?" a steady voice drawled.
Her chest constricted, breath halting. Shadows peeled off from the trees, a figure revealing itself under the moonlight.
Kagome blinked hard, trying to fight tears as Sesshoumaru stepped closer. She moved back to keep distance, vaguely wary. Shit, she'd forgotten her weapons.
He wasn't an enemy per se anymore but they weren't exactly allies either. Since he'd adopted that human girl, they seemed to be in more of a stalemate. Nonetheless, the caprice of the Killing Perfection's moods were unpredictable.
"M-my bad, I didn't think anyone was around."
"You cried like a wounded animal," his lips curved, as though enjoying the thought. "Take heed, girl; such wailing will disturb demons with keen hearing- and not all are as forgiving as I tonight."
"Right, duly noted," she mumbled, rubbing her arm. Damn it. She'd just wanted a place to cry. Sesshoumaru was the last person she wanted to feel vulnerable around.
Golden eyes slid up to observe something beyond the trees. Turning to follow his line of sight, her chest constricted- glimpsing a trailing soul collector in the sky.
"Inuyasha's dead priestess uses those creatures, does she not?"
"Y-yeah, they're Kikyo's soul collectors."
His attention returned to her face, resting heavily there. It disquieted her until at length, he finally made a noise. "...Hn."
The Daiyouki smoothly pivoted, walking out of her available vision to meld within thick darkness again, but she sensed him linger beneath the trees, perhaps taking a seat.
"Keep the snivelling to a minimum."
Kagome startled, blue eyes widening. The first tear fell- closely followed by the second. Soon a stream of them flooded down her face, and she crumpled to her knees, palm clasped tight over her mouth as she tried not to sob.
She wasn't sure how or why. How she could suddenly fall apart in front of him when Kagome prided herself on not crying in front of anyone if it were possible. The why also remained a mystery- why did he invite her to stay? Sesshoumaru was not a charitable sort. Perhaps his sadistic streak enjoyed the salt of endless tears.
Kagome stayed there, quivering in the moonlit clearing for a good while, grass cushioning her bare legs, arms wrapped around herself protectively. When at last the sobs abated, she shakily stood.
Without a word to the demon who had watched her like a voyer of her pain, Kagome headed towards the village after piecing herself back together.
She couldn't see Sesshoumaru's expression, nor the way in which citrine eyes followed her figure until she stepped out of sight.
---
It wasn't like Kagome cried after every damn encounter with Kikyo, though they did leave her worn and exhausted. She felt mighty proud of not bursting into sobs the second Inuyasha's eyes lingered on her a little too long. But Kagome could bear that. She could bear many things.
It was fine, totally fine. She was fine!
Until she wasn't.
It had been two months since that emotional night and thankfully Sesshoumaru hadn't acknowledged her fine display of despair and teenage hormones. In fact, he seemed a little quieter during their encounters while hunting for Naraku, pinpointing her amidst her friends and eyeing her carefully sometimes.
So it was with mild surprise that Kagome stumbled into him again on one such occasion where she needed a good cry. And then again a few weeks after- followed by another encounter near a waterfall a month later. Every time, Sesshoumaru said nothing. He merely waited a respectable distance away, not particularly looking at, nor acknowledging her sorrow as she let out pent up frustrations.
What should be an immensely private thing had changed. Kagome wasn't sure what to feel about it, especially when he began erecting barriers around the area.
Almost like he was ensuring her privacy while continuing to invade it himself.
"W-why…?" she choked out one evening, sitting upon a log with only the Daiyoukai for company. Inuyasha and the others were none the wiser, sitting back at camp further within the forest. "Why are you here, hanging around? Is it fun for you to watch this?" her anger simmered, misdirected.
Sesshoumaru's lazy gaze slid over to her, reclining at the base of a tree. He huffed, drawing a knee up to gracefully drape an arm over it. "Your wailing is an assault on my hearing, I derive no pleasure from this."
"Then what's the deal? I find it hard to believe you're doing it for me."
"Hn, you are correct, I am not," he freely admitted. "This act of concealment is out of acknowledgement. Warriors must not show weakness in battle, nor to anyone but a select few. I am merely ensuring your wish to hide your pain is successful since you are so terrible at doing it yourself," inhuman eyes pinned her in place. Her breath stalled at their intensity. "Your desire to conceal tears and weakness is unexpected for one as emotional as you."
Kagome picked at her fingers. "It's not out of a sense of duty or warrior pride as you seem to think. I just don't like burdening people with my problems. Only...all this energy piles up and explodes out as anger at Inuyasha anyway, I'm not suppressing or hiding anything at the end of the day," she gave a self-deprecating smile. Letting out a long whoosh of air from her lungs, Kagome turned to him.
"For what it's worth, thanks. For uh- concealing me. I still think it's odd that you're going to all this trouble but I'm grateful."
He arched a brow, unruffled and outwardly placid.
Wiping the remaining tears away, she gave a weak smirk. "Urgh, I blubber so loudly over a guy I really shouldn't be in love with. Kinda stupid."
"Indeed," he drawled without sympathy, glancing away.
"And you're still a jerk," she hummed, smiling slightly. But a weird, considerate one. Was it possible to be both considerate and a jerk?
Sesshoumaru did not look at her, tilting his head back to gaze at the branches overhead.
"You 'blubber' so loud a 'barrier' is necessary in order to keep your privacy. Inuyasha would catch your scent otherwise."
"Can Naraku see us like this?"
"The barrier does not mask us from sight, it merely hides scent. It is effective on Inuyasha and other demons but the spider could easily survey us from a distance."
Kagome sighed, rubbing her eyes. "Gotcha," she murmured, falling into a strangely companionable silence with him, before asking; "have you ever been in love?"
His reply was immediate and crisp; "no. Such things are for fanciful beings."
Biting her lip to keep from mentioning his 'Great and Powerful Father' had fallen victim to such fanciful things too, she hummed.
Sesshoumaru frowned in her direction. "Speak."
"I just think- when you do experience love, it's gonna knock you off your feet."
He sneered, "you think yourself an expert on the subject?"
"Gods no! Do I look like one?" Kagome grinned, gesturing to her tear-stained cheeks.
Sesshoumaru searched her face, visibly relaxing slightly. He tilted his head, surveying his sharp nails. "For what it is worth, if I had an opinion on the matter- which I do not," he assured. "I should think your fanciful 'love' emotion is not supposed to cause such pain. I question your dedication to it."
"My feelings for Inuyasha aren't something I can turn off. Believe me, I would if I could," shifting she gazed up at the stars, smiling gently. "Wow, Ursa Major looks so clear and close tonight."
Youki brushed her senses, her only warning. Soft grass crunched beneath boots as Sesshoumaru joined her on the log, sitting beside her. Mokomoko brushed the exposed skin of her knee. His eyes narrowed. "You are referring to the stars?"
Kagome blinked with surprise at his sudden piqued interest, raising a hand to point them out. "Yeah, a constellation. Ursa Major starts there and ends there," her finger drifted.
Sesshoumaru's blank features became lofty, huffing. "That is the incorrect name for it. Those stars are called Satoko."
"Who told you that?"
"My instructor when I was young. And this collection," he reached out, plucking her hand out of the air and redirecting her point to another constellation, "is Mineko, a volcano spirit."
Her skin burned at the contact, feeling his calloused palm, rough from years of training- clasping the back of her hand. Kagome blinked, feeling strange. Her stomach jumped, and she felt grateful and confused when he released her.
"I-I see! Tell me more about them, are they linked to your demonic heritage?" Kagome asked, flexing burning fingers in her lap.
Even hours afterwards, the sensation of warmth and strong youki flitting over her flesh continued to itch at her skin.
---
"I don't want to talk to you! JUST BACK OFF!"
Inuyasha's expression flickered, open hurt briefly appearing before white ears pinned flat to his skull. "FINE! Go running home again, see if I care!"
Kagome stormed away, hands balled into fists. She didn't call for Kirara to fly her to the well, she couldn't be bothered to haul herself back to the future and continue their long and tired trend of long-distance pining followed by disgruntled reconciliation.
She was tired.
Miroku, Sango and Shippo were tired too, judging from the multiple sighs sounding out behind her.
Before she could step out of earshot, she heard the monk murmuring to Inuyasha, encouraging him to follow her and make up. Likely to save everyone the hassle of another drawn-out spat.
Oh no.
Hadn't anyone listened to what she'd said? She didn't want to be chased in some coy 'let's have a fake argument' way. Real hurt and bone-weary annoyance soured her mood.
Hurrying away, Kagome began to run alongside a stream, jogging through a sparse forest and hoping to put distance between them. So lost in her thoughts of avoiding the Hanyou was she that Kagome burst through a youki barrier without noticing, glancing over her shoulder with paranoia.
By the time she detected wafts of steam brushing her skin, it was too late to stop. She gaped upon facing forward, almost crashing headfirst into a well-sculpted chest.
Long strands of silver against bare skin caught Kagome's dazed attention, gaze travelling up to find golden eyes staring down at her. Sesshoumaru paused half-naked before a hot-spring he'd likely intended on bathing in, tipping his head to one side in a silent demand for explanation.
"Kagome!" a distant voice resounded through the trees.
Panic erupted inside Kagome's heart and she turned to the demon. Her hands latched onto his remaining arm, blue eyes stinging.
"Please..."
She couldn't articulate what she wanted, even though it was so simple. Something thick clogged her throat.
The Daiyoukai lifted his attention to the trees. He then moved swiftly.
Sesshoumaru tossed his red and white hankimono over her, enclosing it tight around her body. It shielded Kagome from sight as her vision became swallowed by white silks.
Kagome jolted as a hard force shoved her down into dewy grass that perspired from heady steam saturating the air. Before she could react to the plains of a lean body pressing against hers, his weight pinning her to the ground, she heard branches shaking. Twigs snapping.
Her loafers were ripped off her feet, tossed somewhere further away. Likely out of sight. She heard them clatter over the sound of her drumming heartbeat, unable to see what was going on.
"What the- Sesshoumaru!" Inuyasha snarled, sounding slightly out of breath. "The fuck are you doing, hanging around here?"
A clawed hand minded the folds of the hankimono apart just enough to expose the side of Kagome's cheek- firm lips pressing against it. She stiffened. Sesshoumaru kissed her skin heatedly, his sigh billowing hot breath over her sensitive skin.
"Clearly I am enjoying myself with a woman. Do not interrupt, whelp."
Kagome could barely breathe, face turning steadily red. She lay frozen, reeling.
"Keh, whatever. Just tell me if you've seen Kagome pass through here."
He must not be able to smell me...
"Can you not keep tabs on a simple miko, brother?" Sesshoumaru purred, his hand gliding over her covered thigh, stroking back and forth. "Did she flee from you? I cannot say I blame her."
A snarl ripped through the hot springs. "Piss off! I'll find her myself!"
Furious sounds of bushes being slashed aside rang out, Inuyasha's swears becoming fainter as he drew further and further away.
Left with a demon straddling her and enclosed in luxurious silks, Kagome exhaled. She blinked, briefly dazed as the cover was lifted from her face, eyes adjusting. Dappled sunlight stretched across Sesshoumaru's face as he lingered close with an unreadable expression.
Kagome swallowed. "Thanks," she managed to say.
She's never been this close to a guy before, well not like this, anyway. Inuyasha carried her on his back or occasionally in his arms if the situation got dire, and they'd hugged. But this felt different.
Sesshoumaru braced himself over her using his one available arm, corded muscles leading down to a tapered waist. He was handsome in an aristocratic, cold sort of way – all hard angles and sharp edges. Her polar opposite. The heat of his bare skin bled through her school uniform, their hips melded together, and Kagome was struck by something painfully obvious that had eluded her until now.
There were...other options besides just Inuyasha.
Clearly, the Hanyou knew this little nugget too, since he flitted between herself and Kikyo.
But really, Kagome hadn't given it much thought. Hojo liked her but was easily dismissed. Kouga liked her but she'd always been too busy to really give him a chance.
And Sesshoumaru?
Her attention was helplessly fixed on him while the demon craned his neck down, scenting her hair.
Sesshoumaru had never been on the table before. Did he even look at her like that?
Golden eyes slanted to meet her, half-lidded. Her stomach did a flip, thighs twitching. Soft pink lips parted, and his attention flew to her mouth, lingering.
Before she could say anything, Inuyasha's voice sounded out somewhere close by again. "Damn it, Kagome! Just come out! Quit hiding!"
Kagome found herself sighing- stilling when she caught Sesshoumaru's dark rumble. His lips peeled back with displeasure, body leaning up and away from hers, climbing off.
Remaining sprawled on the ground for a moment, she calmed her racing heart. Picking herself up unsteadily, Kagome unwrapped the hankimono from around herself, awkwardly folding it as best she could and handing it back.
"I better go."
He inclined his head. "Until next time."
Next time.
Her gut wrenched. The next time she became upset with Inuyasha chasing after Kikyo. Oh wow. It really had become something so commonplace it felt inevitable.
That wasn't right or normal. That wasn't how she wanted to live, was it? Anticipating one crying session after another?
"Actually, let's meet up," she said, setting her shoulders back.
Surprise brightened his gaze. Sesshoumaru's lips twitched, "meet up, hm? You make it sound like an illicit affair."
Her expression darkened, "no. I'm not into that," she snipped, pushing her vindictive mood down. This was not an offer out of petty revenge. She just wanted to see him out of choice for once. "I brought a telescope. Let's use it tomorrow when it gets dark."
He agreed to it, watching her leave in that quiet, interested way he usually did. Kagome glanced back in time to see him partially turned away- hankimono clenched in his grip and lifted to his nose in a careful inhale.
---
Kagome actually felt quite happy about the meeting. Anticipation had raced through her veins during the entire day, though she didn't breathe a word about it to her friends.
After finishing up her food, she'd hung around camp late into the evening, before inching away with a weak excuse.
She didn't notice Inuyasha's keen eyes trailing after her, too preoccupied with hurrying around a nearby waterfall and retrieving her telescope that she'd hidden behind some rocks earlier.
Carrying the heavy thing up to the crest of a decently sized hill, she staggered upon finding the Daiyoukai already awaiting her at the top.
Kagome stopped and stared. She then felt a genuine smile curve her lips. How strange, that he could invoke such a reaction.
"Did I keep you waiting?"
Sesshoumaru lifted his chin haughtily, grunting. "I am not some lost puppy following you around, miko. I sensed your approach from my camp and generously decided not to stand you up."
Kagome grinned. What a big response. Almost like he was lying.
Giggling softly to herself, she arranged the telescope set, angling it up to face the distant cosmos. "Okay, you're gonna love this. I'm going to bore you with astrology and point out zodiac signs."
"These fancy foreign words do not sound boring," he uttered, leaning in close to view the stars with faint amazement, perhaps not anticipating the clarity of their view. Kagome felt his hip brush her side, her cheeks immediately blazing red. She tried to temper her reaction but failed miserably, looking at him briefly.
His placid features were much too close, familiar dark youki humming in the space between them. Comforting. Golden eyes met hers, ever watchful. Waiting.
"Sesshoumaru!"
They immediately flew apart as though they'd been doing something scandalous, Kagome's heart leaping into her throat.
Inuyasha stood a little ways away, teeth on display, hand resting on his sword. "Get the hell away from her!"
"Inuyasha- wait," she tried to cut in, but Sesshoumaru was quicker. Lifting his remaining hand, he fed youki into it, allowing deadly fingers to elongate into murderous talons. However, much to her surprise, he faced Kagome while flexing them.
"I will kill her if I please, Inuyasha," he rumbled. "She is a mere fanciful human."
Blue eyes widened, but Kagome clocked onto what he was doing immediately. It lingered there under his calm features that he tried to harden into contempt.
He was playing the villain. For her.
Likely out of some misguided desire to keep everything at the status quo, because he believed it would be easier on them both if they weren't seen as friends. Everything halted inside Kagome. She felt like she'd been coasting through her days without really questioning it.
"Bastard!" Inuyasha snarled, ripping his sword from its sheath.
With a strange sense of calm, Kagome raised her head. She then stepped in between them both, placing her fingers atop Sesshoumaru's sharp, transformed ones.
"That's enough," she said quietly, lowering his large hand.
"K-Kagome? What're you doing? Get back!"
"I said; that's enough, Inuyasha!" Kagome grit her teeth, tension gripping her fiercely- until it abruptly left all at once, rendering her exhausted.
"We need to talk," she said softly, gazing at him meaningfully.
Inuyasha blinked, lowering his sword as his ears pricked and lowered.
Turning to Sesshoumaru, she smiled weakly. "We're going to have to cut this meeting short, sorry."
"We can always reschedule."
Kagome gentled, a warmth pooling inside her that she hoped to revisit soon. However, the Daiyoukai hadn't made it three steps away before familiar laughter spread over the vast countryside beyond their hill.
Miasma leaked out of the sky, waning flowers on their stalks and killing the grass, rendering it dulled brown.
Naraku appeared in all his true, villainous glory- at exactly the wrong time nobody wanted to deal with him. However, absolutely no one could ignore this fight, as a completed Shikon jewel rested in the palm of his hand.
Kagome's stomach dropped. She automatically accepted her bow and arrows from Sango and Miroku when they arrived, looking grim-faced and out of breath. Inuyasha lifted his sword again with determination blazing in his eyes.
The Final Battle had begun.
---
They say 'time heals all wounds.'
Kagome would like to have a word with whoever 'they' were because this sentiment proved false. Time muted pain. It concealed it under layers of civilian life, responsibilities, family dinners and get togethers with friends, but her deep wound never really healed. The pervasive desire to return back to a life that had been stolen from her.
She couldn't say it had been perfect in the Feudal Era but she still missed it terribly. Missed her friends, travelling, exploring, strengthening her burgeoning powers.
She also missed someone she hadn't anticipated longing to speak to.
After killing Naraku and getting her hands on the jewel, Kagome had made her wish;
'I wish Kikyo would come back to life.'
It had resulted in trapping Kagome in the future, the Bone Eater's Well closing, barring entrance. She'd figured the look on Inuyasha's face had almost been worth it, his gob-smacked expression kind of hilarious.
Perhaps the wish had been an out of nowhere impulse. Who knew. All Kagome knew was that a part of her had died that day on the hill with the telescope- the candle of first love snuffing out. She still cared for Inuyasha of course, she wouldn't have wished Kikyo alive otherwise, but the act said something. They'd never be anything more than friends.
After trying her hand at dating a few boys in class, Kagome had broken up with them and remained single for the better part of a year. There wasn't anything wrong with them, per se, but it had felt disingenuous.
It wasn't them she wanted to speak to.
At the age of 18, the miko got her chance. Inexplicably, and without warning or provocation, the well reopened again one night.
Kagome stirred awake, lured downstairs by the promise of magic. It pulsed strongly like before, so she slid her legs over the rim of the well without fear that it would be a oneway trip.
Leaping down while still clad in her patchwork style pyjamas, dark hair whipped upwards as blue light swallowed her whole.
Immediately the smell of city smoke was replaced with distinct smells of petrichor. Fresh scents guided her feet to land gently on the bottom of the well, looking up at dark, cloudy skies.
Climbing out and feeling moisture lingering in the air dampening her hair, Kagome looked up, breath hitching.
The clearing looked exactly the same. Achingly nostalgic.
It sprawled empty and lonesome, awaiting her in complete silence. Kagome noticed the dirt disturbed around the well from how often she and Inuyasha had travelled through it.
Breath catching, hot tears stung her eyes.
Laughing weakly to herself, Kagome tried to rub them away in vain, more rolling down her cheeks. Unlike the usual times though, these were happy tears. Relief threatened to buckle her knees.
"I'm home," she shuddered.
"...Welcome back."
Snapping her head up, Kagome swallowed an embarrassing noise, warmth melting into her expression. She took a step, and then another, walking over to Sesshoumaru as he stood a little ways away, moonlight highlighting his hair.
"Y-you're here?"
Golden eyes flitted over her face, gentling a touch. He reached out and brushed pale knuckles against her jaw, catching tears upon it. "I sensed you. As usual, you blubber too loud, miko."
Choking on a sob, Kagome laughed, catching his hand and pressing her lips to the inside of his wrist.
Sesshoumaru stiffened, attention zeroing in on her. Kagome held his gaze as best she could with watery eyes, smiling.
"Date me," she stated plainly.
No second-guessing, no 'will they, won't they?' no more pining or questioning. Kagome refused to do it again.
He seemed somewhat taken aback by her forwardness for a moment, before a strange kind of intensity livened his expression. He wound his single arm around her waist, pulling her in close.
"What boldness, Kagome," he purred, lips ghosting the side of her ear. "But you can do better than that. Are you certain that is all you want from me?"
Kagome blushed hotly, shifting to catch his eye and smirk. "I just made it back here after three years. Let me catch my breath," she teased, hooking a hand under his yellow obi. "But...yeah, I might want more soon, you jerk."
Sesshoumaru rumbled with approval, swiftly ending the charade of teasing and swooping in. His lips claimed hers firmly, and it was not a kind, sweet kiss but she didn't mind, pressing herself against him. His tongue delved into her mouth, brushing against hers as a clawed hand snaked up into dark hair, gripping tight.
Smiling against his mouth, Kagome trying her best to keep up with his rough kiss as he bit and sucked her lips, inhaling her scent. He almost seemed elated, kissing her so quick and eagerly, like he'd been starving for it.
Out of curiosity, Kagome slid her palm over his chest, finding his heart racing.
Sesshoumaru broke away to plant heated kisses against her neck. He panted, the hand in her hair shaking with want of her.
Kagome stared, slowly looping her arms around his shoulders. "You...want me?" she said quietly like an obvious revelation. It felt so strange and surreal.
He huffed with amusement against her lips. "Hn, it appears you have made me fanciful, miko."
Brightening and smiling widely, Kagome pushed up on tip-toe. Guiding his mouth down with palms cradling his striped cheeks, she kissed him again, pouring every powerful emotion left unsaid into it.
End
