Tag 9 people you want to get to know better
Thank you for tagging me @sparklestheunicorn 💕❤️💕
Three ships: I’ve done this one a few times for the most part it’s unchanging, definitely Evie and Sam from the Diviners and Catra and Adora from She-Ra are my top two, it’s hard to pick a third, but probably either Jude and Cardan from the Folk of the Air or Leah and Fatin from The Wilds
First ever ship: Sam and Freddie from iCarly
Last song: Sofia by Clairo
Last movie: Dating Amber
Currently reading: A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K Leguin and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms both for school and then i’m also still trying to finish The Sweet Far Thing, the third book in the Gemma Doyle Trilogy, but it’s long and i got busy, and I was reading Harrow the Ninth but I didn’t finish it before i had to leave for school and it had to go back to the library and yeah, have to either buy that or wait ages to get it from the local library where i study ://// oh and yeah i also read like 160 pages of The Atlas Paradox but same deal as Harrow had to go back to the library and also i wasn’t really enjoying it too much so i tried to prioritize Harrow, I’d only started The Atlas Paradox first because it came in faster from the library anyways yeah can you tell i’m incredibly chaotic lmao
Currently watching: I started rewatching H2o: Just Add Water which i haven’t watched since I was a kid because i needed a comfort show, besides that not really much atm, I don’t have the time, but I want to get into more Portuguese language shows soon
Currently consuming: I’m assuming this means food in which case nothing, but the last thing i had was a bit of a raspberry white chocolate brownie I got from one of my favorite cafes earlier
Currently craving: That brownie, but it’s night time and i make a general rule not to eat close to when i’m going to bed

Queen of His Heart
Summary: Bucky unexpectedly meets one of his idols
Written for: @the-slumberparty
Words: 1948
Square Filled: G1- Meet Cute
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Actress!Reader
Warnings: Bucky dressed as a Frank Frazetta barbarian (Come on, you know this is a warning)
A/N: Set in a modern AU. I had way too much fun creating this fictional fantasy series XD
Bucky didn’t fit the stereotype of a nerd. He was tall and beefy with long hair. Most people are surprised when they find out about his special interests. Bucky loved D&D, fantasy novels, cosplaying and LARPing. His favourite book was his copy of The Hobbit which he had since he was a boy. Another favourite of his was a series called Maidens of Wrath.
There was so much about this series that Bucky loved. He loved the strong female characters, from the wicked Sister Nimsay; high priestess of the Order of Bulgraith to the kind hearted Isra who ran a local tavern that the characters frequented. His favourite character by far was Queen Ranlova. She was the eldest of seven siblings in this matriarchal society. While five of her sisters each ruled a kingdom of their own and her brother was a royal advisor, it was the duty of Queen Ranlova to keep the peace between the kingdoms. She didn’t always get along with her siblings but she could be kind and just while also being a fierce warrior. Bucky also enjoyed the relationship between Ranlova and the barbarian prince Yarreth. The prince admired the queen without pathetically pining over her while at the same time, respecting her boundaries. Not once was Yarreth disrespectful towards Ranlova should she turn him down.
When Bucky first heard that they were making a TV series out of the books, he was excited, yet reserved. For example, The Lord of the Rings movies were absolute perfection (even if they did leave out his favourite scene; the Tom Bombadil one). The Hobbit Trilogy was okay but the Rings of Power series was abysmal in his opinion. Bucky counted down the days until the moment until the show aired and when it did, he was pleasantly surprised. It was everything he could have ever hoped for. They got all the details right and he especially loved the way the actress playing Queen Ranlova portrayed her. The series used a lesser-known actors, only casting the big names for certain characters. After the first episode, Bucky was hooked.
Bucky was excited about the upcoming fantasy convention. This year, the cast of Maidens of Wrath would be guest stars on the panel. He had his Prince Yarreth cosplay all ready to go and tried to think of any questions he might want to ask them. Now all he had to do was earn a little extra money so he could go.
Bucky was working his usual shift at the café. It was the same people with the same conversations and the same orders all over again. The only thing that was getting him through the day was the thought of going home to re-watch the latest released episode of Maidens of Wrath before heading to his shift at the restaurant. While working, he came across a new customer. He didn’t really see her face as she kept the cap of her baseball hat low and wore sunglasses. Something about this woman seemed familiar to him but he didn’t say anything. He would just have to keep an eye on her.
The whole time this mysterious woman was at the café, she didn’t do anything out of the ordinary. She just sat and drank her coffee like anyone else would do at a café. When Bucky went to clear up her space when she was finished, he noticed that she left something behind. Picking it up, it was a copy of the newest Maidens of Wrath novel: Metal Machine. This hadn’t even been released in the US yet. Whoever this woman was, clearly had special connections and Bucky knew if he had left something like this behind, he’d want it back. Bucky ran out the door with the book in his hand.
“Excuse me! Miss!” he called.
Bucky tried going after her but she was too fast. He wanted to go after her but felt like he’d look like a total creep chasing some poor woman down the street. Bucky thought if she was a fan like he was, she would come back to the café to pick it back up when she noticed it was missing. Until then he would take good care of the book.
Bucky had the next day off but informed all his coworkers what had happened and asked them to call him immediately if the woman came back for the book. Unable to help himself he started reading Maidens of Wrath: Metal Machine but forced himself to stop when he got to the neatly placed bookmark. As much as he wanted to devour the whole thing (and he easily could in a single night) he decided it would be a courtesy not to do so. If he went any further, he might accidently spoil something for someone in his excitement and he didn’t want to be that guy. This way, he might be able to discuss everything that had happened so far in MoW; Metal Machine with this woman. That is, if she would be open to it. Bucky was so engrossed in his reading that he nearly jumped out of his skin when his phone alerted him of an incoming message.
Nat: She’s here ;)
Bucky grinned at the message and immediately rushed to the café.
As soon as he arrived, Bucky looked around for this mystery woman. He spotted her sitting at the same corner booth she was yesterday, looking around nervously. Smiling, Bucky headed over to her and presented the book to her.
“I believe this belongs to you,” he stated, handing the book back.
The woman smiled and carefully tucked the item away in her bag.
“Thank you so much.”
“Anytime. You’re so lucky to get an advanced copy of Maidens of Wrath. You must have some pretty special connections,” Bucky rambled.
“You could say that,” the woman replied, lowering her sunglasses a little.
Bucky could have fainted right then and there. It was really her. Y/N L/N, the actress who played Queen Ranlova on the show. He realised his mouth was hanging open and quickly closed it, taking a seat across from her.
“I take it you’re a fan of the series,” she continued, pushing her sunglasses back up.
“Yes, ma’am. I love the way you bring Ranlova to life. You were a perfect choice for the role,” Bucky gushed.
“Well, thank you,” Y/N smiled, looking a little flustered.
Bucky started a conversation with her and it wasn’t long before it felt like they were old friends. He came to find that Y/N had a few acting roles before Maidens of Wrath so she wasn’t too well known yet but with the series boom in popularity, it was becoming her biggest one yet. She was really easy to talk to with a kind of country girl air about her. Bucky bonded with her over their mutual love of the fantasy series. Y/N’s favourite volume was book two: Crimson Glory whereas Bucky’s favourite was book five: Midnight Moon. Eventually Y/N’s phone pinged, indicating a message which informed her she needed to go.
“Will I see you at the convention?” she asked.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” he smiled.
Bucky couldn’t wait.
Finally, the day of the convention arrived. Bucky proudly examined his cosplay that he had worked so hard on. He wore a faux fur loin cloth, faux leather boots, and a gold circlet on his head. Over his left arm, Bucky had slipped a sleeve that looked like armour that had a strap to cross over his chest. Feeling good about himself, Bucky picked up his warrior axe walked out of his room for breakfast.
Bucky’s roommates Sam and Steve gawked at him as he sat down at the table.
“What?” he grumpily asked.
“Nothing… just didn’t realise Conan the Barbarian was joining us for breakfast,” Sam grinned.
Bucky grumbled under his breath.
“Leave him alone, Sam. He’s been really excited about for this,” Steve chided.
“Fine, fine,” Sam huffed. “You sure you want to leave the house like that though?”
“What’s wrong with my cosplay?” Bucky questioned, suddenly feeling doubts.
“Nothing at all… but if you get flocked by hordes of thirsty woman, that’s all on you,” Sam shrugged.
Bucky finished his breakfast in a hurry because 1. Sam was annoying and 2. He was excited to see Y/N again, grabbed his backpack (which kind of ruined the image a little but needed it nonetheless) and left for the convention.
By the time Bucky got there, the event was in full swing. There were cosplayers everywhere, vendors selling their goods and various demonstrations being held. Bucky was in geek heaven. He looked at the various displays people had, deciding what he may really want before buying anything, had his photo taken by many other attendees and somehow ended up in a group shot with other Yarreth cosplayers. Bucky was having the time of his life.
Finally, it came time for the event he was waiting for. A large crowd of people flooded into one of the buildings for it. Normally, Bucky hated crowds but for something like this, he would make due. When the Maidens of Wrath cast members walked out, they went wild. After they had taken their places, people asked their questions. Some were insightful, some were a little dumb while others were downright insulting. Bucky really wanted to throttle the ones who were disrespectful to the female cast members.
After the Q&A session, they aired a brand-new episode for the public to see. It was everything Bucky could hope for. They got every scene from the book right. Once the viewing was over, the cast went on to do pictures and signings. Bucky patiently waited in the line to meet Y/N. He would have been in that line anyway, even if he hadn’t had meet her a few days before. As he moved closer, he could hear her talking to the other convention goers, complementing them on their cosplays and giving words of encouragement. Finally, it was his turn at the front of the line.
“Hi, I don’t know if you remember me,” he began but she cut him off.
“Bucky, from the diner! Of course, I remember you! Your Yarreth cosplay is fantastic!” she beamed.
Bucky smiled brightly. She remembered him.
“I really enjoyed meeting you and I can’t thank you enough for returning my book.”
“You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help,” Bucky smiled.
Y/N sighed a photo, flipped it over and scribbled a message.
“Let’s take a picture together,” she encouraged.
Bucky got into a warrior stance and Y/N also posed.
“I hope to see you again,” she smiled, handing him the autograph and the photo.
Bucky walked off with his items so other people could take their turn. He couldn’t stop smiling as he read the message on the autograph.
Bucky, I normally don’t do this sort of thing but I really enjoyed talking to you the other day and had a lot of fun. I can’t wait to hear from you.
Love, Y/N
With the message, she had written her phone number. Who knows? Maybe one day they could have the same kind of relationship of Queen Ranlova and Prince Yarreth did. It was the kind of fantasy romance one could only dream of.

Jon watched them leave, and Arya watched Jon. His face had grown as still as the pool at the heart of the godswood. Finally he climbed down off the window. "The show is done," he said. He bent to scratch Ghost behind the ears. The white wolf rose and rubbed against him. "You had best run back to your room, little sister. Septa Mordane will surely be lurking. The longer you hide, the sterner the penance. You'll be sewing all through winter. When the spring thaw comes, they will find your body with a needle still locked tight between your frozen fingers." Arya didn't think it was funny. "I hate needlework!" she said with passion. "It's not fair!" "Nothing is fair," Jon said. He messed up her hair again and walked away from her, Ghost moving silently beside him. Nymeria started to follow too, then stopped and came back when she saw that Arya was not coming. Reluctantly she turned in the other direction. (Arya, AGOT)
this whole moment is giving me major endgame foreshadowing vibes (especially but not exclusively wrt the outline) at the end of this chapter jon states that "the show is done" and he's referring to the fighting down below but it could be interpreted as a nod towards the end of the series in general. i think thats fair given the nature of the next line.
jon follows up with a warning for arya and it is clearly some very heavy handed foreshadowing. it refers to arya's general arc trajectory from beginning to end: she will be hiding and sewing all through winter but when the spring comes her needle (the symbol of her identity, home, family) will remain locked between her fingers.
this line is totally a carryover from the earliest asoiaf plotline when arya was going to travel to the wall and beyond in the first book. the imagery doesn’t fit quite as well as it would have if arya was spending significant time in a frozen, snowy environment, but the overall idea is still relevant.
after this warning arya, with passion, cries that "it's not fair!" and jon's only response is that "nothing is fair". when this dialogue was written jon and arya were going to have a tortured love affair throughout the trilogy. arya and jon would, after much angst, discover they weren't siblings so they could actually be together......except i think they still would've been driven apart for whatever reason (most likely jon's self imposed? exile to secure bran's throne). its unfair but theres nothing either of them can do about it. i have no doubt arya will want to follow jon (and ghost as we see nymeria, arya's soul bonded animal, try to follow), but that is not her fate.
"reluctantly" arya has to turn and walk in a different direction from jon. she returns to her room. in the end i think jon will have to go north again, for good, and arya will stay in winterfell because somebody has to accept that responsibility if bran rules as king of the seven kingdoms. arya and jon will remain connected thru their wolves and the warg bond they share. that will be a tangible connection that endures since i think ghost and nymeria will be by their sides when all is said and done just as they are in this moment.
grrm has consistently said he's working towards the same ending he's had in mind since 1991 and this does really feel like exactly the kind of bittersweet note he'd end things on.

The Hierarchy of Evil in the KH Trinity.
The Greater Scope Villain: Terra-Xehanort, aka Xehanort, Ansem's Apprentice aka Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. This guy does very little in the present day action, with his most noteworthy role being the Final Boss of the first title, Kingdom Hearts. And yet he is the one primarily responsible for just about every major wrong in the trilogy, and as a result his presence lingers like a foul odor. He can pass the buck to Ansem the Wise all he wants, but at the end of the day he's the one who mass produced Heartless and got the big invasion of the universe going, he's the one who brought back the MCP and got Hollow Bastion destroyed, he's the one who spawned Xemnas and Organization XIII, he's the one who brought in Maleficent and her league of villains to command the Heartless and seek out the seven Princesses of Heart, and he's the one who separated and brought so much emotional toil onto Sora, Kairi and (especially) Riku. And all because he was too proud to accept being just a small man in a small world in a vast universe, trapped in the shadow of his mentor.
The Big Bad: Xemnas, Nobody of Xehanort and the leader of Organization XIII. He's the one who has a master plan going across all three installments of the trilogy, staying a shadowy, unknown presence throughout the first two before finally coming in to serve as chief adversary and Final Boss of the final one, Kingdom Hearts II. His human/Heartless self may be higher on this totem pole, but he never would have succeeded in his goals so long as Xemnas was around, as Xemnas is even more powerful and diabolical than he is! Like Dr. Frankenstein, he created a monster beyond his control.
The Major Secondary Villains: Chernabog, who rules over End of the World which the Heartless utilize as their home base within the Realm of Light. Maleficent, who controls the Heartless for her own wicked ends even beyond what Xehanort manipulates her into and is responsible for other noteworthy villains such as Hades and Pete. Marluxia, who instigates a rebellion within Organization XIII that damages both it and the heroes opposing it. Saix, who is Xemnas' second-in-command and is responsible for directing many of the group's sinister activities. And the MCP, who helped to destroy Hollow Bastion the first time around and now wants to do so again.

Fantasy Romance Recommendations Pt.1
I'm a big fan of Fantasy Romance books but I've noticed that a lot of recommendations lists have the same books over and over again. Nothing against Sarah J Maas, Jennifer Armentrout and Holly Black, but I have read their books already and I'm looking for new suggestions. And thus, I decided to make my own little list (with help from @housebaylor and @shirewalker). Maybe it will help someone somewhere. XD ***Some of the books listed here are not Romance novels officially but all have romance and have HFN or HEA endings Fantasy Romances The Fallen Empire Trilogy by Grace Draven The Kraelian Empire has ruled with an iron fist for centuries, its grip unyielding until the power of three women, and the men devoted to them, break it.
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden Vasya Petrovna is a young woman gifted with the Sight which allows her to see spirits who inhabits the world. The arrival of Christianity spells trouble for her and the world of the spirits at large. This story has her rebel against her fate as a woman in medieval Russia, go on a great adventure and meet amazing characters.  One of my favourite.
Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher A subversive take on Fairytales! After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra―the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter―has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not.  It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. Celia and Marco's beautiful story of challenges, love and magic. Beautiful haunting magic. Radiance by Grace Draven Two people brought together by the trappings of duty and politics will discover they are destined for each other, even as the powers of a hostile kingdom scheme to tear them apart. The Bird and The Sword by Amy Harmon Magic is forbidden and gifted people are sentenced to death. Lark, a voiceless young woman, has a gift she must keep hidden. The day her mother was killed, she told lark's father she wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if Lark's died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky. A Fate of Wrath and Flame by K.A. Tucker Portal Fantasy! Gifted thief Romeria is transported into another world into the body of a treacherous princess. Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom. Only read the first book so far Married to Magic Trilogy by Elise Kova Shared Universe, Fantasy Romance, Stand Alone Novels About Young Women and their Unexpected Romances with Magical Men Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa Callypso Lillis is a siren with a very big problem, one that stretches up her arm and far into her past. For the last seven years she’s been collecting a bracelet of black beads up her wrist, magical IOUs for favors she’s received. Everyone knows that if you need a favor, you go to the Bargainer and everyone knows that sooner or later he always collects. Only read the first book Promise of Darkness by Bec McMaster Princess. Tribute. Sacrifice. Is she the one prophesied to unite two warring Fae courts? Or the one bound to destroy them? If you like S.J.Maas you might like this YA Fantasy Romances Uprooted by Naomi Novik Agnieszka lives in a quiet village bordering a corrupted Wood. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik Multiple POVs fairytale Miryem gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk--grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh--Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered. The Girl who fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh Mina's people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. In an attempt to appease him, each year a beautiful maiden is thrown into the sea to serve as the Sea God’s bride, in the hopes that one day the “true bride” will be chosen and end the suffering. An Enchantment of Raven by Margaret Rogerson With a flick of her paintbrush, Isobel creates stunning portraits for a dangerous set of clients: the fair folk. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—Isobel makes a deadly mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes, a weakness that could cost him his throne, and even his life. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson Elisabeth was raised in a magical library where dark magical grimoire are kept. She hopes to become a Warden whos job is protecting the Kingdom from their powers. Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire. Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital. Shielded by Katlynn Flanders Hidden Princess, arranged marriage, yearning! A kingdom ravaged by war, and the princess who might be the key to saving not only those closest to her, but the kingdom itself, if she reveals the very secret that could destroy her. Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater Ever since she was cursed by a faerie, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear or embarrassment - a condition which makes her prone to accidental scandal. Dora hopes to be a quiet, sensible wallflower during the London Season - but when the strange, handsome and utterly uncouth Lord Sorcier discovers her condition, she is instead drawn into dangerous and peculiar faerie affairs. A Crown of Wishes by Rosha Chokshi Book 2 of a series. A captured princess and a wise prince team up and to win the Tournament of Wishes, a competition held in a mythical city where the Lord of Wealth promises a wish to the victor. ****Part 2: Urban Fantasy recs to follow.****

I've alluded to this before but one of the possible stories I could see happening for Campaign 3 is essentially the story from the Old Kingdom books by Garth Nix, aka one of my formative fantasy series. The basic gist of the story (spoilers for a 20 year old book) told in the original trilogy is that an ancient evil, sealed behind a number of wards by seven of the powerful creators of the world (it was the 9th creator; the 8th abstained) is unearthed, and the agents doing this spark unrest and war (sound familiar?). Those seven creators were largely put into the system of magic and no longer exist as independent entities, with a couple exceptions. Ultimately, people acting as the avatars of six of those creators; the remnant of the seventh; and the remnant of the eighth who had originally not participated are able to seal it once more.
While this definitely has, as I mentioned above, plenty of parallels to Campaign 3 the part that actually made me connect the dots (since, let's be real, this is the plot to a whole lot of epic fantasy) is the concept of avatars of long-dormant or dead powers reenacting an ancient rite of sealing. Ashton and whoever wields the spark of Rau'shan will stand for those titans, who once sealed Predathos; and I wonder if the Raven Queen (who post-dates the original sealing; her predecessor was presumably present) and the Luxon (not mentioned) will have a role to play this time.

hi, i saw you recommended some lgbtq books a while ago but it's impossible to find anything from tumblr later on, so do you know any good fantasy/sci-fi/action/contemporary m/m books? like with actual plot instead of just romance and also with characters and (platonic) relationships other than the main couple. thanks!
hiiiii, sorry this is super late, but of course i can!
(apologies in advance cos some of these are prob books i’ve recced before 🤪✌🏻)
-> captive prince trilogy (cs pacat) | if you’re looking for something with actual plot, cp has a big political overarching plot that’s super compelling about the two princes of neighbouring enemy kingdoms trying to reclaim their respective thrones. there’s lots of triggering content so do look it up before… but while the romance is the main event, the political aspect of the book is really detailed and engaging.
-> dark rise trilogy (cs pacat) | 2 out of 3 books are out currently and the m/m romance is not the focus so far though it’s been well teased/a good slow start. the whole trilogy is a subversion of the classic medieval chosen one trope ft. an old world of magic being reawakened, a dark king’s return and an order of knights trying to prevent it. great found family vibes. ya historical fantasy.
-> hither page (cat sebastian) | a jaded spy and a shell-shocked country doctor team up to solve a murder in postwar england. historical murder mystery!
-> big bad wolf series (charlie adhara) | an ex fbi agent gets transferred to a secret agency dealing with werewolf crimes after being attacked by one of them. human and werewolf relations are tense and he ends up paired with a wolf agent from the wolf agency that echoes his to solve a series of brutal crimes. ok, i know this sounds like straight up werewolf porn, but i was really surprised by how engaging and well written the mysteries were in this series. i’m talking twists and shit, compelling/complex side characters…. this series completely took me by surprise.
-> seven summer nights (harper fox) | post war england, a shell-shocked archaeologist and a vicar fall in love while trying to uncover a small town’s archaeological mystery in the south downs.
-> the last binding series (freya markse) | edwardian magical mystery series, each book focuses on a different queer couple while following an overarching mystery/plot that threatens the welfare of magical britain. big found family vibes, lots of great side characters introduced in each book that then become leads in later books, beautiful writing.
-> a taste of gold and iron (alexandra rowland) | ottoman empire inspired fantasy world, a prince and his bodyguard must investigate a break in at one of their guilds, the results of which could save their queen’s reign.
-> the will darling adventures (kj charles) | 1920s mystery adventure series. great side characters, insp by 20s pulp novels. a wwi vet turned bookseller get swiped up in mystery and a spy he’s not sure he can trust. first one is a bit slower, but it picks up in book 2 & 3.
-> the kingdoms (natasha pulley) | 19th century alternate history mystery. an amnesiac journeys from london to a scottish lighthouse to try and unlock the mystery of his forgotten past. complex narrative and extremely immersive storytelling. the romance is central but subtle.
-> the binding (bridget collins) | 19th century historical fantasy. emmet is training to be a bookbinder in a world where books contain people’s memories and are highly controversial… eternal sunshine of the spotless mind vibes.
-> less (andrew sean greer) | arthur less is going on a worldwide literary tour to avoid going to his ex’s wedding. this book really took me by surprise, it was so delightful.
-> the house in the cerulean sea (tj klune) | linus baker, a case worker for the department in charge of magical youth, gets sent to an orphanage for so labelled 'dangerous' children in order to evaluate whether they're about/able to end the world and if the orphanage/the man in charge of it is best for them. big feel good book, really funny, great found family vibes, subtle love story, wonderful side characters.
-> the bedlam stacks (natasha pulley) | merrick tremayne is called upon by the india office to go on a dangerous expedition deep in peru to fetch quinine (essential for the treatment of malaria) despite the debilitating injury that almost cost him a leg. every expedition before his has yielded no results apart from dead bodies, but merrick has family history deep in the country so he goes against his better judgement. there, he meets raphael, a priest surrounded by strange stories of disappearances, cursed woods and living stones, and who might hold the key to his family’s past. really cool world building, really immersive writing, very subtle romance. more plot heavy than romance heavy, but it's still !!!!
-> salt magic, skin magic (lee welch) | lord thorny is cursed and can't leave his father's estate. trapped there for over a year now, he is slowly losing his mind. until industrial magical john blake arrives on the land to investigate an unrelated case involving witchcraft. soon enough the men get closer and must work together to figure out a way to break thorny's curse. historical fantasy, good mystery, fun twists. i haven't read this one in a while, but i remember really enjoying the mythology.
-> the watchmaker of filiigree street & sequel (natasha pulley) | telegraphist thaniel receives a mysterious watch on his birthday whose pre-set alarm saves him from a terrorist bombing on scotland yard. since the bomb was made with clockwork parts and only the bomber could have known when to set the alarm, thaniel is sent by a detective investigating the bombing to live with the suspected watchmaker to figure out what’s going on. sherlock holmes vibes. slow burn/subtle romance. delightful writing.
-> under the whispering door (tj klune) | an unpleasant and selfish man in life, wallace price meets his reaper at his near-empty funeral and gets taken to a whimsical tea shop where he meets hugo, the ferryman whose job it is to help him move on and crossover into the afterlife. a task that becomes complicated as wallace starts developing feelings for hugo. found family vibes.

Read any good books since your last update about your recent reading?
Yes, although I forget when I last shared the books I've been reading, so hopefully I don't repeat anything.
I know that I've repeated this book because I've mentioned it several times over the past couple of weeks, but I can't help but remind everyone again about Steve Coll's excellent new book, The Achilles Trap: Saddam Hussein, the C.I.A., and the Origins of America's Invasion of Iraq (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO). It's definitely the best book I've read so far this year, and it's one of the better books I've read in the past 10 years.
Other recent books that I've read and would recommend checking out:
•Radiant: The Life and Line of Keith Haring (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brad Gooch
•The Far Land: 200 Years of Murder, Mania, and Mutiny in the South Pacific (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brandon Presser
•UFO: The Inside Story of the U.S. Government's Search for Alien Life Here -- and Out There (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Garrett M. Graff Garrett Graff has quickly become one of those authors who I go out of my way to immediately pick up his latest books because he's so well-connected and I ALWAYS learn fascinating things from his books. I don't know if there's a writer/journalist today who has better access to the American defense establishment or proven to be more capable of shining a light on many of the most secretive aspects of the United States government.
•"Uncool and Incorrect" in Chile: The Nixon Administration and the Downfall of Salvador Allende (BOOK | KINDLE) by Stephen M. Streeter
•Life After Power: Seven Presidents and Their Search for Purpose Beyond the White House (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Jared Cohen
•The Liberation of Paris: How Eisenhower, de Gaulle, and von Choltitz Saved the City of Light (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Jean Edward Smith
•Unruly: The Ridiculous History of England's Kings and Queens (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by David Mitchell
•The Rise and Fall of a Palestinian Dynasty: The Husaynis, 1700-1948 (BOOK) by Ilan Pappe
•In the Houses of Their Dead: The Lincolns, the Booths, and the Spirits (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Terry Alford
•Kingdoms of Faith: A New History of Islamic Spain (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Brian A. Catlos
•Borgata: Rise of Empire: A History of the American Mafia, Volume 1 of the Borgata Trilogy (BOOK | KINDLE) by Louis Ferrante
•Soldier of Destiny: Slavery, Secession, and the Redemption of Ulysses S. Grant (BOOK | KINDLE) by John Reeves
•His Final Battle: The Last Months of Franklin Roosevelt (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Joseph Lelyveld
•Charlie Chaplin vs. America: When Art, Sex, and Politics Collided (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) by Scott Eyman

Trust In My Hate: an Azris /Captive Prince Crossover
I likely won't start truly writing this fic until after What Lies Inside is completed, but I've been having a lot of fun planning, worldbuilding and outlining so I thought I would share some of it (but please note that the content of this post is subject to change, nothing’s final just yet.)
If you aren't familiar with the series, it's the Captive Prince Trilogy by C.S Pacat. [link to Penguin's page for the series here.]
I'm not calling this an AU because I'm not transplanting Azris to the Captive Prince (CaPri) world, nor am I transplanting the CaPri plot into ACOTAR. The world where the fic is set is inspired by both the CaPri and ACOTAR, as you can clearly see in the map below. The characters are maybe 60% ACOTAR, 25% OC, 15% CaPri. The plot is like 60% CaPri, 20% post-canon ACOTAR, 20% original. I essentially threw everything I liked into a blender and made something new.
Find the map and the fic's prologue below the cut! [new map and updated prologue as of 2/22]
Map:
Tumblr media
I recommend clicking on the map to view it at a higher resolution.
Prologue:
This will explain the map, I promise.
Excerpts from the Illyrian Chronicle, compiled by Gaspar Kasos for his majesty King Gabriel in the year 207 AL (after liberation.) Long ago, the great Island of Prythian was divided into eight kingdoms. The Kingdom of Andr in the far north, and a coalition of seven kingdoms known collectively as the Courts. There were four seasonal Courts: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter; and three solar Courts known as Dawn, Day, and Night. Five centuries ago, Cornelius II, then the ruler of the Autumn Court, began a campaign of expansion. By the time his great-great-grandson Timothy IV took the throne, the Autumn Court’s power had consumed the other three seasonal Courts. Timothy did not think Andr, that rocky formidable land, worth the resources necessary to claim it and thus turned his gaze to the south.
In response to the growing threat from the north, Dawn allied with Day. Both would remain neutral in the initial conflicts to come which distanced them from the Night Court who stood fixedly against Autumn’s actions.
Not long after this coalition was formed, a rebellion broke out in Night. For centuries the Night Court’s rulers had oppressed the Illyrian people within their borders, forcing them to live in desolate camps and serve in their armies. Under the leadership of the warrior Enalius, the Illyrians were able to break away from the Night’s oppression. During the revolution they conquered half of Night, establishing the great Kingdom of Illyria as it stands today.
Though Dawn and Day remained neutral for decades, it would not last. On the Winter Solstice in 57 AL, Autumn spies massacred Dawn's royal line in its entirety, prompting Night to join the Southern Coalition with Day to stand against Autumn and aid in governing Dawn's rulerless territory on the border.
Thirty-seven years ago the newly crowned King Rholand of Night and King Gabriel of Illyria met on the border at Mount Ramiel to discuss a tentative peace, marking the end of over a century and a half of strife between their lands. Rholand offered Illyria a public apology for Night’s persecution of their people, as well as a generous peace treaty and trade agreement that leaned heavily in Illyria’s favor. It was at this summit when Illyria formally joined the alliance against Autumn and the allied Southern Kingdoms as we know them were formed. The final offering on that celebrated day however, was made by no kingdom but by King Rholand's younger sister.
The Lady Elyssa of Night surprised all of those gathered by offering King Gabriel her hand in marriage, arguing that there would be no better demonstration of this new, peaceful relationship between their kingdoms than joining their houses by blood. Impressed by her eloquence and resolve, and after discussing the terms with Rholand, Gabriel accepted the proposal and the two were wed the following sunset at the grand temple in Illyria’s capital, Ios.
The three southern rulers of Prythian ensured that their sons and heirs—the Princes Azrelios of Illyria, Rhysand of Night, and Lucien of Day—grew up paying frequent visits between their lands to bolster the trio’s camaraderie. The rulers’ forethought was well rewarded when a brutal battle broke out at Marlas in the borderlands at the eve of this current decade.
The three young, then untested heirs valiantly led their forces against Autumn’s armies, but the battle only ceased when the Illyria’s Prince met Eren Vanserra, Heir to the Autumn Throne, in single combat and slew him on the battlefield. Eren’s death placed his younger brother Eris next in the line of succession.
The battle of Marlas shattered over two centuries of relative peace between Autumn and the South. Nine years later, skirmishes are still frequent in the borderlands and tensions between Autumn and the Southern Kingdoms are at an all time high.
If you made it this far, thank you <3 I know I'm a nerd. Yes, I made the map myself and likely spent waaayyyy too much time on it but I think it's pretty cool and I hope it stoked some excitement!
