Now that the Owl House cartoon has ended, one thing I notice is slightly unusual about the Hunter/Willow pairing:

In other media, when a shy or timid girl finally gets together with the boy she likes, it gives her a confidence boost.

But that doesn’t quite happen here, because Hunter and Willow don’t even meet until AFTER she’s become confident.

By the time they meet in “Any Sport in a Storm”, Willow’s trying to recruit people for her Flyer Derby team, and in “Labyrinth Runner”, when Severine impersonates Willow, Hunter is able to tell that she’s a fake because the Willow he knows would never be afraid of him.

The only time Hunter ever sees Willow not be confident is when she has a breakdown during “For the Future” and calls herself “half-a-witch Willow”, which inspires Hunter to break out of the vines to reassure her she isn’t.

So, this is a slightly unusual twist: Willow’s relationship with Hunter doesn’t give her a confidence boost, because Hunter ONLY knows her as “confident Willow”, with the breakdown during For the Future as a one-time incident.

I just thought that was an interesting detail.

Honestly kudos to the writers for throwing in fan service by bringing back fan favorites and making it feel totally natural and not at all awkward nor forced, especially with Steve! Like with the Detention Kids it makes sense, they’re very thematically important given their introduction of multi-track learning, as people who were positively influenced by Luz and vice-versa and go to Hexside. But STEVE man...

There was literally nothing to this dude. He was just a joke covenscout who appeared for one scene and had no personality besides blind obedience to authority and wanting approval. He was truly a one-off while the Detention Kids were at least relevant to their episode, and thematically as a whole. But not only did the writers still give Steve a bigger role as a thank you to fans, but they made it work;

The way Steve is used to give insight into the average covenscout, how they’re all regular witches like our beloved protagonists who got indoctrinated and roped in. How Steve helps Hunter realize just how messed up this all is, as someone with an outside reference for what interactions should be like due to having a family before this; Reminding him of the palismen and promoting another vital step in Hunter’s arc.

The way his expressed doubt pairs so well with Severine’s little arc, and complements Lilith leaving the Emperor’s Coven; How their leader doing that surely inspired some covenscouts, allowing Lilith to actually be a beloved example for people to follow!

AND THIS! Steve being an older brother to King, a stranger he can just talk to without the baggage of everything that’s gone on. Someone who can relate to King and give him advice, with a clearer head due to being far less stressed about it all. Someone who’s done that introspection, also got what he wanted only to realize it’s not the power and fear that he desires. And how Steve validates King’s shift in goals, reassures him he’s not silly or ungrateful or anything else for no longer wanting this. All of which perfectly taps off King’s character arc of wanting power and to be special, only to realize he just wants and needs friends... So when it feels like he can’t keep the latter but WILL get the former, it’s a bitter and hollow victory.

And for a little kid going through a lot, it feels great to be told that’s okay! So Steve is just a great receptacle for other characters’ arcs, a soothing outside opinion to talk to when there’s nobody else. Really just big bro vibes to all, a therapeutic and guiding influence all big bros should aspire to be. And if the theory is true that he IS Mattholomule’s older brother... It really wonderfully answers how Matt’s older brother had a map to the Looking Glass Graveyard that the covenscouts didn’t. Which just loops back to that episode, and also further ties Steve to Mattholomule, another character who’s had an arc, as well as our beloved Gus.

And in turn Mattholomule motivates Steve, since according to Hunter, covenscouts are cut off from their family. So clearly Steve wanted to go back, he was glad to help his little bro and that got along Mattholomule’s adventure and development with Gus, which led to him being a multi-track kid and helping in the rebellion against the very coven his older brother had reservations over; While getting along Gus’ development both times. Then there’s the theory that Steve and Mattholomule are the kids of Ulrich, head of the Construction Coven, and a potential motive for him to redeem himself; And thus help our allies, as his kids did now and are going to keep doing so at a crucial moment!

Just the overlapping web of connections. The way it all feels connected as part of one larger, sonder community. How just one chance encounter can really change your life, butterfly effect. It really does feel like destiny, which it sort of is because this is a story written and planned by people after all. You really get the sense that everyone has their own life and their own relationships with each other, each unique. That we’re all influencing one another and part of this complex, overlapping system, and what goes around comes around, as it all ties together! This show man... It’s one thing to make a return non-obtrusive, but actively beneficial to the plot and character arcs in a way where it’s almost integral yet still natural and not at all forced-

Somebody was needed for a role, something had to be done for these characters and by someone. So rather than make a new one off the bat, the writers cleverly reused someone we’re already familiar with, thus making that character and moment all the more intimate and meaningful!

this isn’t really an ask, but I just read some of your Eindred and The Witch stuff and it’s so cute! I signed up to your patreon to hear more of your stuff! I read your instagram post and the joy I felt at reading that you’re Asexual and Panromantic! I’m aspec and at least biromantic, i haven’t figured it all out but I’m getting there! I deeply related to when Severin said something like he couldn’t imagine his enemy-lovers face, as I feel like I don’t have a “type.” Just thank you!

Will we get to see Severin (the dragon knight) and Y/N babies? I have mad baby fever, and reading the part 2 of his story where Severin said that all we had to worry about was “cuddling his babies” and no Queen duties hit my heart like an arrow! Cause like…bein a queen is hard, and quite frankly too much work that I’d ever want to do. So I’m happy being his breedin bed pet forever! He also deserves to be king since all the dragons really protected the kingdom and kept it alive probably. Not the humans, and most certainly not the royal family.

On another note…if dragons live for hundreds of years…what’ll happen to Y/N? Will Severin just magic his way to prolonging her youth and life? Fountain of youth, witch, etc?

I think i remember reading that is Athalie did marry something from another family and had dual blood children it would have been the Moran. Which got me thinking. Would Moran/Severine children potentially be blood benders??? Similar for a dual blood child with Moran/Moreau could they heal people like water benders?

I mean ... tbh the severin family is basically blood benders already. They restrict themselves by doing seals and rituals but in reality there is nothing stopping them from learning how to just.... Do that if they chose to. But they don't train themselves to ... FEEL in the same way that you see most other witch families feel. Like how basically every other family can operate their magic with gestures. The Severin family regulates/restricts/represses themselves because they have it in their head that's how to do it. The symbols they make is more like a mental conduit that helps them focus their intentions, and if "I don't do it perfectly it will not work" when it's just ... ya know. Not true LOL it's part of why dendro and cam's whole process of teaching her how to use magic is so strange to her because Dendro's like "... ya know. Just... feel it." and Cam's like "??? ?"

And I don't think they could heal in the same way as water benders necessarily - but they do know how to do blood transfusion spells and they can fix things like if you had a blood infection of some kind, they could fix that but. Ya know.

A little angst with a sprinkle of Adrian.

Next chapter will be another longer one (trying to move the story along!) It will wrap Severine's hearing -- but as one might have gathered, it will begin with a flashback.

Severine was asked many things, but ahead of Hunter appearing as a character witness, she was asked if she every outwardly was on record displaying dislike for Hunter.

And Hunter knew exactly what she would say.

We met Severine and Adrian (officially with a speaking role) in the same episode -- and their presence in Hunter's memory is also intertwined with first meetings.

“What have we here?” A tall thin guard captain appeared from behind a snow covered tree. His face was covered, as was customary for these exercises – but he had a tail that peaked from under his white cloak. The tufted tip twitched with interest. 

Hunter spun around from the rock he’d been hiding behind. He lowered the beak of his scout mask further over his face, and held a hand over a blade at his side.

The figure chuckled, moving closer and then around the small encampment Hunter had set up for his watch. Face covering or not, Hunter was certain that this witch had eyes locked on his prey, the small scout that everyone still called “Recruit” even though he’d been a full member of the Coven since his branding at age 7.
