TCoH Excerpts that make me happy (in no particular order): Uncle Seward
Overseer Seward J. Dean massaged the pale blonde goatee around his mouth, his icy blue eyes scanning every thick chord under with a rug, cataloging every face in the room. He always looked scary on duty, with his piercing Gele gaze and Glyph tattoos rippling in blue on his arms. When his survey reached the Kings, much of that intimidating vibe disappeared.
He grinned in an almost charming way, barking, “Who the hell let you in here?” and scaring the shit out of half of the room. He walked right past Momma’s grimace. Seward smiled at all three of them, squeezing Rose’s shoulder and ruffling Clove’s hair. “Finally caught your big break, eh, bud?”
“That’s Charles Clay-Casey!” Clove blurted, pointing at the photographer.
Seward slapped Clove on the shoulder. “Go on and talk to him—he loves little nerds like you,” he said. Clove sped off. “And you,” he said, turning to Rose. “How’s my favorite Blaze niece?” Rose shrugged, but he could see how happy she was to see him. “Woman of few words, as usual,” Seward said with a terse look at Momma. “Did you make those finals your bitch?” he asked Lily, raising a palm.
“Barely had to try,” bragged Lily, high fiving him. Momma cleared her throat, and the briefest look of guilt flashed over her face.
“That’s my brainiac,” Seward said. Now, finally, he turned to Elora. All the warmth was sucked out of his demeanor. “Elora,” he said flatly.
“Seward,” she said in the same tone.

Hyperallergic: Art Movements
One of Antony Gormley’s “Another Place” figures following the recent vandalism (photo by @chris_henry_photos/Instagram)
Art Movements is a weekly collection of news, developments, and stirrings in the art world. Subscribe to receive these posts as a weekly newsletter.
The iconic Grand Al-Nuri Mosque in Mosul, Iraq, and its distinctive “hunchback” minaret, were destroyed during the Battle of Mosul. Iraqi and US officials blamed ISIS; the terror group blamed US forces.
Leonardo DiCaprio has handed over paintings by Picasso and Basquiat that were given to him by a financier involved in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad fund scandal to the US Justice Department. Authorities in the US are hoping to recover some $540 million they claim were stolen from the fund.
Antony Gormley’s outdoor installation of life-size human figures on a beach in Liverpool, “Another Place” (1997), was painted with colorful swimsuits by an anonymous artist. Several were tagged with the name “Mokie.” One was also inscribed with the phrase, “I am art.” Gormley has requested that the sculptures’ new and unsanctioned paint jobs be removed.
Three men were charged with selling $400,000 worth of fake Damien Hirst prints. One of them, Vincent Lopreto, was recently arrested in New Orleans and had previously served time in prison in New York for selling forged Hirst works. He faces up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted this time.
Over 75 Nazi artifacts were discovered by Argentine police during a raid on a collector’s home in suburban Buenos Aires. The objects were stored in a secret room hidden behind a bookcase.

Thieves stole artworks worth $12 million from a storage unit in Sunnyside, Queens, including pieces by Frank Stella and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
On June 13, nearly every employee of the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art — five full-time staff members, at least two part-time workers, and seven contract workers — resigned in protest of alleged mismanagement by the institution’s executive director, David Dadone.
The Irish artist Richard Mosse says he was arrested by Greek police while observing an anti-refugee rally on the island of Chios. He was released after being held overnight at a local jail.
Shortly after it was installed outside Cairo’s opera house, a sculpture of Marilyn Monroe by artist Ehab Al Asiouty became the subject of widespread ridicule, with many likening it to Seward Johnson’s infamous “Forever Marilyn.”
A local MP in Dover has filed an application for listed building status for the structure where Banksy recently painted his “Brexit” mural; the building had been slated for demolition to make way for an urban renewal project.
The charity Art UK plans to create an online database for all 170,000 public sculptures in the UK by 2020.
New York City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission approved a plan to add a glass curtain wall to the Brutalist addition at the back of the Brooklyn Museum.
Norway’s government abandoned “Memory Wound,” a long-planned memorial by artist Jonas Dahlber to the victims of the 2011 massacre on the island of Utøya, due to opposition and a lawsuit from local residents.

Word Find (I'm a Hack and a Fraud edition)
@rosiewritesandrambles tagged me to find smoke, tart, crunch, and fossil!
Smoke
A chill rushed through Hye’s body. Black smoke poured from his skin, his pores opening to release it. The heavy smoke coiled into a snake, untouched by all light except its dim violet glow. Two solid purple eyes stared at him. I won’t be [long]. Nox coiled around the branch and slithered to the trunk. Hye watched until he couldn’t detect the shadow anymore.
Tart Start (i know it's not actually similar to tart but i dont describe flavor much bc im a Hack and a Fraud)
“What am I supposed to do?”

WIP: The Curse of Hyetal #1: The Lost Empire
POV: Seward J. Dean
WC: 989
Possible warnings: burned bodies, bomb mention
Eyyy this was fun!! My first Flash Fiction Friday y'all!! And it's not from Dedrick or Rose's point of view! Kind of because if I DID use their point of view my only option is.........spoilers
The Bax Cola Explosion
The abandoned Bax Cola factory has exploded, and Seward is in charge of the investigation. What he finds turns a tragedy into a vendetta.
“I didn’t know this place was here.”
The Bax Cola factory closed twenty years ago when some soda company in Ikkezar bought out the company and moved all its production to the Kingdoms. Officer Beltran sat in the passenger seat next to Seward, staring in awe at the burned husk of a factory.
Seward mumbled some nonspecific “Neither did I” lie as he navigated his truck through the thick crowd of reporters and nosy onlookers. With any luck, one would get run over and finally leave their investigations alone.
Reporters swarmed the Enforcement officers as they climbed out of the truck. Namely, they swarmed Seward. He was Reigner Langley’s right hand. Seward basically did his job for him.
“Who do you believe was behind this?”
“Is this a terrorist attack?”
“Was it rosers?”
Dumb, fear-mongering questions bombarded Seward, but luckily, he wasn’t stuck. “No comment,” he declared loudly. He activated his Trick, carefully allowing the soles of his feet to be solid so he didn’t have to worry about falling into Salren’s core. He walked right through them, like a ghost.
Beltran stumbled through a moment later, fixing his hair. “That’s a handy trick you got there,” he huffed.
“Should’a got yours when you had the chance,” Seward said, ducking under the perimeter tape. Beltran laughed, but Seward was serious. Intangibility was the most useful thing he could have gotten. Seward never had to worry about being locked out of anywhere or surrounded by blood-thirsty reporters. The Goddess knew exactly what she was doing when she granted him his Trick.
Funny, what was her name again?
It didn’t matter anymore. Ashor closed ten years ago.
Firefighters jogged around the smoldering factory. They contained the fire pretty well: Floods doused flames, Blazes willed fire to die, and earth-Terras smothered whatever was left. Beltran, a Jewel, probably would have been safe going into the building with Seward, but Seward didn’t want to risk the place toppling onto him.
Frost collected on Seward’s clothes, forming a protective barrier. “I want statements,” he said, glancing at their reinforcements. “Figure out who saw what.”
Beltran, being one of Seward’s most trusted officers, nodded dutifully. Seward climbed into the rubble. The firefighters knew better than to stop him.
The place stank with hot metal and burning rubble. Seward pressed his sleeve to his nose as he carefully made his way under crooked doorways and creaking columns. Ahead, he saw the reflective coat of the fire captain, crouching over…
“Gele Grace,” Seward groaned.
Three bodies. Charred. Unidentifiable without extensive testing. They were lined up too perfectly for them to have been alive when the place went up. This wasn’t the first time a burning building ended up with three victims. If he was right, then at least two of them would have broken throats and broken legs.
Captain grimaced behind his soot mask, his yellow eyes glowing through. He guided Seward toward cleared section of rubble. “Bombs set the place off,” he said, gesturing to the scorch marks. “Unless one of these was a Blaze, I don’t see how any one of them could’ve set them off.”
“Any chance more fire was made by a Blaze?” asked Seward. “Any flammable material?”
“When the structure’s more sound, I’ll have my people do some testing,” said Captain.
“Great,” muttered Seward, his eyes falling on the victims again. The one in the middle bothered him. In every one of the similar cases, one had been a kid. A teenager. They all reminded Seward of Aussie’s kids.
There wasn’t much left to see. Everything had been burned good. Seward climbed out of the factory. Officer Kraft waited for him outside. “Well?”
“Three victims,” Seward said. “One young.”
Kraft sighed, shaking his head. “This is the Jensen boy all over again,” he said, scratching his stubbly face. Worry filled his eyes. Like he was scared one day he’d come to another burned building with three bodies and find out that the youngest one is Harmony, his daughter.
Seward wasn’t much for sympathy when it came to Kraft. The guy was dim and shouldn’t have become an Enfo, but that was Langley’s decision. “It’s The Host,” he said, keeping his voice low.
“I don’t think it could be anything else,” Kraft said.
Kraft had been investigating this for years, but hardly made any headway. Didn’t have an idea about where they were going next, even though the pattern has been consistent. Seward couldn’t do anything about it. The only thing Seward didn’t have control of was Langley.
Seward didn’t have time to investigate himself, what with basically running an Empire while his lazy boss tried on fine suits, laughed with his friends, and ignored his sons, even his surrogate sons. Not that Seward was bitter.
Seward left Kraft to stare off, pulling out his phone. If there was one woman who could do a better job than Kraft, well…
“Hey, Aus,” Seward said once the line clicked. Aussie grumbled sleepily on the line, which was odd, considering it was eight and Aussie woke up at five. “I need a favor.”
“What kind?” Aussie kept his voice low.
“Bezarago,” Seward named. “I have this case—”
“Can’t do it,” said Aussie, a door shutting behind him. Seward frowned. “She…she died yesterday. The hurricane. We’re in the Isles.”
Seward’s heart fell. “Shit,” he whispered, which was basically I’m sorry in Seward.
“I’ll be back in a week. We’ll…we’ll talk then.” Aussie hung up.
Seward stared at the factory’s remains, strangely relieved. At least it’s not Clove, Rose, or Lily. He wouldn’t know what Aussie would do if one of them died. Didn’t know what he would do. They were his niece and nephew, after all.
His phone rang again, and as the missing children report came through, his stomach dropped. Eric and Maggie Beltran. Neither of them were in their beds, and their father, interviewing firefighters fifty feet to Seward’s right, had no idea.

Word Find
I took two of @akindofmagictoo's open tags! The words were drift, dry, deal, dear
Drift
Only a few more hours to go. He began to drift off.
A foot nudged Dedrick’s side. Dedrick blinked awake, his nose nearly poking the tip of a dagger.
Dry
Hye’s stomach stirred, so did the wind. A gust took Tohel and blew her over the log. As soon as she was over dry land, Hye released the wind. She landed in the mud with a thud.
Deal (x2!)
Lily jumped up and grabbed Rose’s wheelchair, wheeling her toward the Enfo. Rose grabbed a table. “Wait,” she whispered. “I need to figure out this guy’s deal.”
“His deal is that he’s apparently a dangerous, wanted criminal!” Lily hissed in her ear.
Dear
“If they’re actually medical themed, I’ll kill you in your sleep.”
“Woah!” Guin held up their hands innocently. “Strangely dark for our dear Clove.” Clove stuck his tongue out.
not me almost accidentally using the word "laundry" for dry
I tag: @cecilsstorycorner, @seven-days-was-all-she-wrote and @zmlorenz and anyone else who wants to find dance, show, and code! (bonus word if you can't find the others: oh) No pressure!
