Metasequoia glyptostroboides Dawn Redwood
This plant was photographed on Northeastern University's arboretum. Although it may look like an evergreen, many of the leaves are turning yellow.
Basic Facts
This tree is a deciduous coniferous tree and is native to western and Central China with a cold hardiness zone of 4 to 8. This tree needs full sun, medium to wet well drained soil. This tree would also appreciate consistent moisture. This tree can also grow from 70 to 100 feet in its lifetime!
Design
This tree can be used as a street tree, in a rain garden, or even a container plant when it is first small. However, when this plant is large it needs much space because of the size. The color change of this plant varies from light green in the spring to dark green in the summer to red-bronze in the fall. This tree does produce cones and the leaves are needle-like so be aware of litter in the space that it is used
Bird Attraction
This tree mostly attracts birds because of its ability to provide coverage in the winter. It can also be shelter for birds from their predators.

Rocky Dawuni drops New Single “Shade Tree”, OUT NOW on all platforms!
International musician, songwriter, producer and activist, Rocky Dawuni releases his new single “Shade Tree” worldwide on September 12, 2023. The single will be the first from the 3x GRAMMY Nominated musician’s forthcoming new album set to drop in 2024. “Shade Tree” is a timely new global anthem of empowerment and unity from the Ghanaian star.
The song is based on the concept of the tree that provides shade for all of the various “shades” of humanity. It is a convergence point and an oasis for all people. The shade tree is where conflicts and disagreements can be resolved; it provides “a shelter from the rain” which is shared amongst everyone. Humanity shares this common destiny because we are nature and our destiny is intimately entwined with each other and with all of life just as the roots of the tree. Under the tree we are a community in our individuality.

As the lyrics say “we are one, but we are not the same.” Just like the leaves of the tree, we are not all of the same as we represent different textures, colors and shades but we all share the same roots. The song is from a perspective of a lonely soul, seeking connection and community which is found in various manifestations in everyday life where people gather, celebrate and find connection from isolation. At a time when Africa is awakening to new political realities and the wider world is grappling with further geo-political divisions, this is a poignant song that reminds people of our shared humanity.
Rocky Dawuni’s own unique “Afro Roots” sound mixes Roots Reggae, Afrobeat, Highlife, Soul, Pop & more. A galvanizing performer, Dawuni has shared the stage with luminaries including Stevie Wonder, Ozomatli, Peter Gabriel, Angelique Kidjo and many more. Rocky was named one of Africa’s Top 10 global stars by CNN having showcased his talent at prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and The Hollywood Bowl. Rocky is a dedicated activist serving as a UN Goodwill Ambassador for the Environment for Africa and a Global Ambassador the World Day of African and Afro-Descendant Culture as well as running his own Rocky Dawuni Foundation. Through these and other designations he uses his music to shine a light on crucial issues facing humanity across the globe with live concerts, speaking roles, panels, youth empowerment and much more.
“Shade Tree,” written by Rocky Dawuni, has additional production by GRAMMY Nominated engineer and musician extraordinaire, Anthony Brewster as well as renown engineer Michael Vail Blum. The song was mixed by multiple GRAMMY Award winning engineer and producer, Qmillion aka Keith Lewis, known for his work on the Robert Glasper “Black Radio” albums, Seun Kuti and more. Drawing from diverse influences and vocals stylings that sometimes recall classic soul singers like Curtis Mayfield and D’Angelo, with a production approach that merges elements of Hip Hop, Reggae and soul stirring social commentary,” Shade Tree” keeps things moving with its irresistible conscious groove heralding a new world of hope.

Quercus rubra Red Oak
Red Oak aka Quercus rubra! This tree was photographed at Northeastern University's arboretum near Carter's Field.
Basic Facts
Similar to white oak, it prefers full sun. It also does well in medium moisture and acidic soil. This tree is mostly healthy and does not seem to have any issues which could suggest that most conditions are being met. This tree can be used as a shade or street tree. The cold hardiness of this tree is zone 4 to 8.
Design
Similar to White Oak, considering a shrub layer that is drought resistant under the tree is a useful technique when designing landscapes using a Red Oak tree
Wildlife Benefits and Considerations
White Oaks provide great cover and nesting for surrounding wildlife and mammals such as deer, elk, moose, and rabbits browse the leaves and the young seedlings. The acorns produced by this tree also attracts wildlife, meaning this tree is valuable to wildlife in many different ways!
Have you ever seen these acorns from this tree?

Luscious, Dense and Green: Xanthostemon chrysanthus
This showy small to medium tropical tree was flowering its head off on my recent trip to Brisbane and northern NSW. It was such a welcome sight after the damp, soggy Summer we have had, finally a species revelling in all the rain!
Xanthostemon chrysanthus
Xanthostemon chrysanthus is also known as ‘Golden Penda’ and comes in a large shrub form named ‘Expo Gold’ which gets to a height of around 4-5 metres high and a smaller shrub ‘Little Penda’ which grows from 2-4m high.
Xanthostemon chrysanthus
The right yellow flowers are attractive to all nectar feeding birds and insects and are followed by large fruits which are again eaten by parrots and fruit doves.
Golden Penda is a rainforest tree and in its natural habitat in northern Qld it can reach unto 40m high, however in an urban environment it will usually max out at around 8-10 metres. It can be pruned heavily and turned into a dense topiary or hedging plant and to generally promote flowering.
I spotted this tree everywhere in and around Brisbane, it is used as a shade and screening tree in residential gardens as seen above. A habitat tree in parklands and as a street tree all abut town.
Xanthostemon chrysanthus
Golden Penda enjoys a warm humid environment with a moist well drained soil, as it grows naturally in northern QLD it thrives in a rainforest environment. It can be grown as far south as Wollongong as long as it is protected from cold drying winds and given plenty of water during a dry period.
Xanthostemon chrysanthus
This is a wonderful feature tree and copes well with shade, as our seasons are becoming more moist and we are no longer getting the cool evenings which can usually be expected in the Autumn months, I think some of these tropical trees may become quite viable solutions for NSW gardens.
Xanthostemon chrysanthus
Think of Buckinghamia celsissima, Stenocarpus sinuatus and Alloxylon flammeum they all grow up north and cope quite well around Sydney. It may be time to start rethinking some of our trees considering the rapidly changing climate, just a thought 😉
