USS Arizona (BB-39) on the East River, departing the New York Navy Yard on her shakedown cruise, on November 16, 1916. "As completed, the ship had very little superstructure and a small bridge. Rangefinders are visible atop both masts. The mast mounted radio antennae have been lowered for passage under the East River bridges."

My trusty vessel
The “John B.” started its 37th year of faithful service Sunday with an annual shake-down cruise, in anticipation of the fishing season, which is starting just now.
I got my lines in the water for a couple of hours, but came up empty. Still, the sun was shining, the lake was cordial, the boat ran well and my equipment functioned properly, so I consider it a successful trip.
l took this photo as I was about to slip past the breakwalls of Hammond Bay Refuge Harbor, into the open water of Lake Huron.

spirk fic recs
to mark this blog hitting 125,000 posts I thought I'd throw together a fic rec post of some of my favorite spirk fics! There are so many recommendations I could make, but I tried to recommend ones I don't see recommended as often. Fics are included under the read-more, enjoy!
TOS:
These Hands, If Not Gods by greenforsnow (Explicit, 18,200 words). A post-Amok Time fic where Spock is still experiencing plak tow symptoms, and Jim does his best to help Spock out. One of the first spirk fics I read, and I am such a fan of how Jim is written in this fic. One of my favorite takes on TOS spirk, it's an all-time fave
It's Only Art (if it makes you feel something) by Wrath_of_Bones (Teen and up, 24,231 words). I thought the ending of this fic was really lovely. Jim tries to figure out who's been painting a series of paintings that have been appearing in the art studio on the ship. SO much pining. Perched in the Soul by Betazoa (Explicit, 12,847 words). During an away mission, Spock accidentally bonds them together in an attempt to save Jim's life. There is SO much pining and sexual tension in this fic as they struggle to try and keep things platonic despite the bond needing to be consummated.
The Bond by TheVulcanBobDylan (Explicit, 12,371 words). A post-Amok Time smut & hurt/comfort fic. I really enjoyed the characterization of everyone in this, and there are some moments that really tugged at my heartstrings - Spock has so much anxiety about bonding with Jim, and the feelings Jim feels are incredibly human, so real and complicated. So good.
TOS Movies:
Shakedown Cruise by Rhaegal (RhaegalKS) (Explicit, 23,122 words). This fic has a lot of pining and yearning, all as a result of Spock still missing memories following the fal-tor-pan. Jim longs for Spock to remember, missing the relationship he and Spock used to have. Jim feels a lot of hurt; Spock may be alive again, but Spock is still remembering how to be himself. So, so good.
AOS:
And Then I Let It Go by kianspo (Explicit, 10,632 words). The most popular fic on this list. Post-Star Trek Beyond. The crew has a bit of time on their hands as they wait for the new ship to be constructed. During that time, Spock up and leaves, cutting off all communication, and Jim tracks him down. I really love how this fic explores the post-Beyond version of these characters and what they've all just been through.
kuv kath-vuk fator by AgentStannerShipper (Explicit, 56,475 words). An AOS take on Spock's pon farr. So much smut at the end, really need to underline the explict rating and the tags on this one. This fic also has some good Nyota & Jim friendship content that, let's be honest, is lacking in a lot of trek fic. Jim works with Nyota to learn some Vulcan because he's nosy and is trying to figure out why Spock is requesting medical leave (spoiler alert: it's pon farr), and by the end of the fic, him having put in the time to learn the language pays off and makes the final part of the fic super satisfying. Check the tags on this one to see if it's right for you.
Weekend Lover by ValiantBarnes (Cimila) (Explicit, 30,016 words). Academy-era. AU where they have a one night stand in Riverside, and while Jim expects to never see Spock again, once he runs into him in San Francisco, they start hooking up again. Check the tags; the smut in this story is really what's pushing the plot here. Intense and really good, I'm a big fan of the ending to this one, I've read it multiple times.
SNW:
The 1,000 Hour Sleep by spqr (Mature, 27,227 words). I've reread this fic at least four times already since it was published last year. This fic nails Strange New Worlds Jim despite us having him for only an episode, and it's such an entertaining AU: Espionage with Jim as a spy whose path keeps interweaving with the Enterprise and its crew. Jim gets exposed to some radiation that won't let him fall asleep but sleep is required for the radiation to leave his system - this is where Spock steps in to help Jim sleep via a meld. I find something new I love about this fic every time I read it. Additionally, there's some fantastic "crew as family" content, and it explores the family dynamics between Jim and Sam, too. It's such a well-constructed fic, cannot recommend enough.

I love the one scene Seven and Riker had together.
Tumblr media
I wish we saw Seven work as a First Officer under Riker.
I think they work well as a Command team, their styles aren't all that different. As Picard noted in Best of Both Worlds when Shelby arrived, he was also brash and a risk-taker.
It's why Riker knows how to talk to both Shelby and now, Seven.
Seven would be good at pushing Riker from being too cautious. And Riker could get her on board things without setting off a minefield. Unfortunately, Starfleet Command wanted Seven to undergo her own Shakedown cruise to check if she can be herself in the confines of Starfleet.
Tumblr media
I love Seven's expression when she learned Riker wasn't dismissing her concerns but listening to her and actually sharing a plan.
And operating in 'an unofficial capacity' is Seven's default and a role she's comfortable with since this was Seven's role in Voyager: a free-floating troubleshooter. This is her wheelhouse.
Tumblr media
Look at how pleased Seven is, that she can be useful and use her skills, and that Riker speaks her language. Because he does.
Also, it's only a small sample size but Seven getting along well with Picard's First Officers is now a thing.

A pair of commissioned starship designs,
Tumblr media
The USS Lakarian, a collaboration between starfleet engineers and the few Cardassian scientists of a milder tempremant who sought aid and allies beyond the Union's borders following the Dominion War. The class would've been one of Starfleet's first slipstream-capable vessels, if its launch had not been delayed by over a decade owing to political pressures from Cardassian and Federation higher-ups.
Tumblr media
The USS Falcon, an experimental post-danube runabout, geared more towards maneuverabilityand firepower. Unfortunately, the ship proved too powerful for its own good, and split apart during a shakedown cruise - killing both pilots. The development project was put on hold, with the only two other vessels of the class being mothballed immediately.

💛💙SPIRK FIC REC💙💛
This TOS fic takes place after a The Search for Spock.
Following the fal-tor-pan, Spock is still struggling to recover his memories. The disastrous maiden voyage of the USS Enterprise-A causes him to realize that he’s forgotten something important about his place in Kirk’s life.
This is quite a gentle one, with deep love and tenderness. A lovely story with which to close out the year 🥰🖖

a list of the spirk fics i've read in the last 10-ish days and loved:
And Then I Let It Go by kianspo (AOS) - post-beyond fic that slots in perfectly with the movie canon. it's steeped in want
master of a nothing place by strzyga (AOS) - reread, mind the tags, if spock going pre-reform is your thing then this fic is your thing
The Bond by WhatIfImaMermaid (AOS) - i got on a bond/pon farr/explicit/shorter fics kick and this one showed up in my search. not pon farr, but ALL bond. really unique writing style. spock has amnesia, jim doesn't want to tell them they're not married, it has the sweetest spock ever
Your heart's sudden but inevitable betrayal by WhatIfImaMermaid (AOS) - reading The Bond (see above) led me to this gem, cute, funny, jim pov that jumps off the page, short read that's just happy
A Father's Love by mutantleech (AOS) - listen, i'm going to have a lot more to say about this fic in the masterpost of recs i'm putting together, but i'll say here that this is hands down the most painful spirk fic i've ever read, and yet it has the happiness at the end that i crave, don't be turned off by the mpreg tag (seriously, i never read mpreg and this fic had me in the best of chokeholds)
The 1,000 Hour Sleep by spqr (SNW/TOS) - reread, super unique premise, FINALLY some snw spock, pike is the best, as is the entire crew of the enterprise, found family, hurt/comfort
Shakedown Cruise by Rhaegal (RhaegalKS) (TOS) - another spock amnesia fic lol, this one is so gentle and loving, all about falling in love again
All Our Yesterdays (the All or Nothing Remix) by dreamlittleyo (AOS/TOS) - an episode of TOS re-written for AOS, oblivious jim, oblivious spock, quick easy read (i really love the authors who make writing look so easy no matter how difficult it is, and this one does), mind the tags
These Hands, If Not Gods by greenforsnow @m-b-w (TOS) - the tags pretty much say everything, except that the term PWP is selling it short, there are so many FEELINGS, pon farr, plak tow, obliviousness and conniving abound (affectionately)
An Endless Stream of Tomorrows by remylebae @twinkboimler (TOS) - post voyage home fic, first kiss, jim can't wait any longer, so so sweet, old almost married spirk
Foundation by remusmoonshine @remusmoonshinezine (TOS) - an all fluff/no angst massage fic, no seriously, ALL FLUFF, if you need a pick me up this is the one
Reminder - PLEASE don't be shy. send me recs in ask or chat and feel free to self-promo! i read a lot and fast so i'm always looking for new stuff
(you can find previous recs under fic rec and/or spirk fic recs)

January recs
Alright, I’ve got multiple Murderbot Diaries recs from last month, and one each for MCU (Black Widow+Spider-Man), Due South, The Hands of the Emperor, and Star Trek AOS. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Acceptable Mission Cost by i_have_loved_the_stars_too_fondly (Murderbot, gen)
The planetary leader of Preservation is taken hostage by a corporation and held for interrogation. Lonely and homesick, she starts talking to the SecUnit assigned to guard her cell. When it's ordered to kill her, it can't bring itself to follow through.
Yessssss, awesome alternate first meeting where Murderbot is assigned to guard Mensah! Some heavy plot reliance on coincidence but the feels are excellent.
@Perihelion: Fuck you ART by Sparrowlicious (Murderbot, gen)
And that's how I accidentally started a social feed account with a cult following. It's not my fault humans have an obsession with my opinions.
aka Murderbot discovers space twitter and commits crimes against corporate entities (ART is helping!)
I’m not usually a fan of social media fics done this far from their origin (i.e. Space Twitter is just like modern Twitter!), but Murderbot and ART’s friendship in this story is impeccable and hilarious.
Iterative User Testing by Ostentenacity (Murderbot, gen)
Murderbot's buffer is becoming a problem.
Funny but sweet story about Murderbot working on its social interactions (and also reprogramming its brain a little with ART? Friendship is magic!).
The Peter Tingle by igrockspock (MCU, Peter/Yelena)
Yelena's bored and she's got three options:    (1) Start a fire.    (2) Start a brawl.    (3) Talk to Peter Parker.
Completely unexpected but completely delightful pairing! Shenanigans, banter, grief, Peter being a nice young man who does math in bars and also dresses up in spandex, and Yelena finding someone she can be a little vulnerable with. (set after Hawkeye and No Way Home)
This Canadian Life by SpaceTimeConundrum (Due South, Fraser/RayK)
Today on our program we’re bringing you a three act investigation into a true Chicago legend. It’s a larger-than-life tale of murder, exile, culture shock, and the incredible power of human kindness as we ask the question: did Chicago have its own Canadian superhero in the ‘90s? The answer may surprise you. From WBEZ Chicago, it’s This American Life.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! Great outsider POV in a way, and fun post-canon content that also follows up on some minor characters and the ripple effects of Fraser being Fraser.
Absurdly Discreet by breadandroses (The Hands of the Emperor, Artorin/Kip)
"Being seduced by someone who turns out to be a spy isn't a crime," Ghilly said. "It is when you're the Sun-on-Earth's personal secretary," Cliopher replied dryly.
  — The Hands of the Emperor, Chapter 63
Sharp look at that barely mentioned incident from the book, and the DEVOTION. The PINING. GAH.
the ship in port is the safer one (but it's not the reason it was made) by KiaraSayre (Star Trek reboot, gen)
The Enterprise's first mission is a boring one. Luckily, the ship more or less makes its own trouble, including: stills, toilet paper, lighting issues, awkward crewmembers, lunchroom seating politics, and, of course, the Admiralty.
Or: How Jim Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Chain Of Command.
Very fun and creative story about the Enterprise going on a shakedown cruise, Jim learning some valuable lessons about personnel management, and the dangers of a genius crew with too much time on their hands.

Joe Carey's whole deal is so hilarious. Sometime in season 3 or 4 the writers thought they killed off Carey and this is why they only have him appear in flashbacks. And then in season 7, the writers realized oh, he's not dead!
And literally months before Voyager returns home, the writers kill him. LMAO. Poor dude, he's always been marked for death, the writers just didn't realize they actually killed and rectified it in season 7.
Anyway, in the autobiography of Janeway, Janeway said she was angry at Starfleet for ordering them into a mission that got a crew member killed. They're part of Starfleet and are happy to serve in Starfleet but Janeway wanted to impress on them how much they don't have back-up in the Delta Quadrant. So she's not going to do any missions for Starfleet.
So the urge to do the whole: Because the Council is Stupid, I'm Gonna Ignore the Council thing happens earlier than in Star Trek PIcard: Firewall.
This was why they had Janeway riding a desk for 2 years after, so Starfleet was sure Janeway could still follow orders. This is the same thing they pulled with Seven of Nine in Picard season 3-- she was permitted to go under Shaw's command, knowing he was a Wolf 395 survivor. Shaw was Seven's Shakedown cruise.
Just as riding a desk for 2 years was Janeway's shakedown cruise before she got/commandeered the Dauntless.
Anyway, this scene at the end of Friendship One was really affecting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of the few times we, the audience, are privy to Janeway's grief losing a crewmember.

A while back, I started working on a fic where Picard-era Seven got pulled into the past and had to deal with being on Voyager. I really liked where it was going and what I was doing with it. But life got hectic and I didn't have time to write. Then, season 3 happened and I still haven't finished it, but I got the gist of how it ended. That ending didn't really mesh with my story. So I just kind of figured I'd chuck that WIP into the unfinished fics bin.
But lately, this fic has been on my mind. I really want to revisit it, see what is salvageable, and figure out if there's a way to rework some of the chapters I've already written so they fit within the canon. Granted, I have to finish watching Picard first. But I think there's a lot I can still use. I think my biggest hurdle will be trying to figure out if it makes more sense for the fic to exist after Picard, between seasons 2 & 3 or even before the shakedown cruise. And adjust everything to fit that end of the timeline. My major plot points won't have to change otherwise. It'll just be a matter of going through the outline and 6 chapters that are already written.
