Shakuntala Devi has a book on homosexuality! How the fuck did I not know this?

Excuse me you all. I grew up solving her puzzle books throughout my school days and 5-6 years of my adult life as a math major trying to understand and then later iterate that Shakuntala Devi’s math is much different from the math we do in college. SO basically she has been a part of my life in some way or the other. And now I discover after 15 years of knows her “closely” (not sure if I can claim that now) THAT SHE HAD WRITTEN A BOOK ON HOMOSEXUALITY BACK IN 1977. Yeah that is right, 1977 India. Shakuntala Devi. I’m amazed, not sure how to react, definitely going to read it. The preface looks promising.

Anybody else know this feeling? Discovering how people you have known, randomly or otherwise, somehow having a deep connection with the LGBTQ+ community!

It's December 22nd, ♾️ National Mathematics Day in India. On this day in 1887, the brilliant mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan was born in Erode, Tamil Nadu. Ramanujan was responsible for advances in number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems until then considered unsolvable. Schools and universities throughout India celebrate his birthday now with math contests, games, demonstrations, and other educational events. In 2017, the day’s significance was enhanced by the opening of the Ramanujan Math Park in Kuppam, Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. 

Ramunajan's genius was obvious from childhood. By the age of 12, he’d mastered trigonometry and developed many of his own theorems. Ramanujan’s peers at the time said they rarely understood him and stood in respectful awe of him, but his ideas were too novel for the leading mathematicians in India to be bothered with. 

In 1913, when Ramanujan was 25, British mathematician G.H. Hardy became enamored with his theorems and got him into Cambridge University. Ramanujan thrived in Britain and was soon elected to be a member of the London Mathematical Society. In 1918, at the age of 30, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society – one of the youngest persons to ever achieve this esteemed position. 

Ramanujan returned to India in 1919 because the food in Britain didn't agree with him. His health continued to deteriorate, and he died in 1920 at the tender age of 32. His achievements in mathematics, however, continue to live on and grow ever larger. His notebooks of unpublished material are a source of new ideas to this day. Of his thousands of theorems, all but a dozen or so have by now been proven correct. A century after his death, researchers are still discovering that mere comments in his writings about "simple properties" and "similar outputs" were themselves profound and subtle number theory results. 

It's no wonder that in 2012, former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh declared Ramanujan’s birthday as National Mathematics Day to be celebrated across the country. ☮️ R.I.P., Younger Brother of Rama… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

In 1982, she was awarded the Guinness World Record for fastest human computation. She was assigned a multiplication problem with two random numbers of 13 digits each (7,686,369,774,870 × 2,465,099,745,779) and gave the correct answer (18,947,668,177,995,426,462,773,730) in 28 seconds.

She travelled to several countries for the purpose of having her talents studied. In 1988, her abilities were tested by Arthur Jenson, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. Problems given to her included calculating the cube root of 61,629,875 and the seventh root of 170,859,375. Jensen reported that Devi came up with the solutions (395 and 15) before he could write them down in his notebook.

Before all that, in 1977, at Southern Methodist University, she gave the 23rd root of a 201-digit number in 50 seconds. Her answer (546,372,891) was confirmed by calculations done by the UNIVAC 1101 computer, for which a special program had to be written to perform such a large calculation. The computer took longer to solve the problem than Devi did.

Oh, also, in 1979, she wrote the earliest book about homosexuality in India.

A Matter of Chance -2

Nandini joyously relished the feeling of resting against her beloved. The gentle rocking of the horse beneath, the gentle wind caressing her shoulders.

“This must be it” she closed her eyes and hummed.

“Be what?” asked a  bemused aditha.

“Heaven” said nandini and went back to contention.

“My silly darling” he lovingly teased.

The winds suddenly grew heavy and cold

A sudden unease settled in, prompting nandini to reluctantly open her eyes.

She stilled in fear… for there stood the Imperial princess of the Chola empire, Kundavai devi, glaring fire beams at her.

Her eyes flew open, her raced and sweat poured from every inch of her skin.

She anxiously looked around and flailed her limbs, hoping for reassurance.

Her heart and mind calmed down slowly as she realised this was her hut in the woods.

She absentmindedly patted her mattress – made of dry leaves and straw – to comfort herself.

“Ah, it was that horrid bullock cart ride on the way back from the market” She realized, after wondering why she was reminded of another similar experience.

Her exhaustion from carrying out all her chores single-handedly, made her lose the curtains she’d drawn over her memories.

“This is my fiefdom” she whispered “No human can challenge me here” before dozing off again.

She awoke a few hours later, lazily stretching her limbs and massaging her forehead.

She prepared herself for the day and set out to collect flowers for the temple. “Enough lazing around for today, young lady “ she chided herself and strode across the crunching forest floor.

After finding enough flowers to satisfy her requirements, she set the flower basket aside and walked to the pond.

She huffed as she picked up the mud pots. Fetching water was not her favorite part of the day, it was underlined by the mild anxiety of not dropping it.

Nandini knelt into the pebble laden shore and  slowly tilted a pot into the pristine water.

Her pale orange chest band and dhoti, ornaments of thin, dull gold and fresh flowers made her look ethereal- as if shakuntala dwelled still in the mortal world.

How she wished for some help. “Perish that thought “ she scrunched her face.

Human support hadn’t worked out too well for her in the past.

She walked absentmindedly, on the same path she’d taken over a thousand times, when she heard the leaves crunch.

The sound seemed too obvious. Nandini had trained her ears to be keen, to avoid becoming a wild beast’s supper.

Her curious eyes found no clue and she chalked it up to an animal that had run away or climbed a tree.

“Sigh” she raised her eyebrows and continued her purposeful stride.

“Nandini” came a familiar voice. She shivered in fright and slowly turned towards it.

Her heart leapt up when she finally saw the face that has haunted her. 

She set the full mud pots aside by the forest stream and simply stood……

……with only the cooing of birds and their heavy breaths for company.

i think we are going wrong as a generation with young girls (which i am seeing a lot) making reels and highlights and life boards and vision boards of models/influencers/celebs. What happened to brains, accomplishments, personality? Ruth Ginsberg, Shakuntala devi, Amelia Earhart, Mother Teresa, Marie Curie, Rachel Carson and artists and authors and writers and scientists. Aiming for something that your dollars can't buy. Something that doesn't give you an eating disorder. Something that is better for your life and your visions. There are a lot of great things to be and to become.
