HYPEBEAST/Shane Gonzales’ brand MIDNIGHT STUDIOS has always been invested in music since its founding in 2014 and with each collection comes a new layer of elevated wonder. Unveiled during NYFW, the brand’s latest collection for the Spring/Summer 2023 season illustrated the wide-ranging evolution of rock and roll emotion. In collaboration with goth rock band, H.I.M., the “And Love Said No” collection sees an array of rock-inspired elements on streetwear-focused tailoring. The collection offers up varsity jackets, denim coordinated sets, knitwear, oversized button-down shirts, relaxed pants and more complete with H.I.M.’s signature HEARTAGRAM logo and butterfly graphic designs. Ushering in tailored dress notes are jackets with Pagoda shoulders which are paired with wide-leg pants. Highlights of the collection include a black leather coat, relaxed yet refined suiting and slightly oversized jackets.“Music is a constant source of inspiration in my design,” said Gonzales. “H.I.M. has always been one of my favorite bands I’ve looked back to time and time again. To be able to work with them on an entirely new level makes this collection really personal and special to me.”

Myself with Shane Tan of Cherub. Shane’s collaborative store with Justin, who runs Jiggythings. The newer icons’ choice of clothing and deviant behaviour has encouraged the youth to explore the vintage clothing scene. Clearly, these youths also wish to ‘keep it real’ (to be authentic, honest) in what they wear and flaunt to their friends. To the untrained eye, it would be difficult to keep things real especially in the vintage scene as many garments would have lost their tags. As such, the hungry consumers turn to vintage garment specialists such as Cherub and Jiggythings, who advertise individual pieces on their social media pages, often being snapped up in minutes especially due to their prices. I spoke to Shane about this trend of vintage streetwear during his most recent pop-up store event during the June holidays. He says that I am not the first to ask where and how he obtains the original pieces of clothing, but maintains they are authentic, being sourced from many different locations. Shane added that he understood that these ‘hypebeasts’ - the eager followers and bandwagoners of streetwear fashion - have started to want to know more about the origins and authenticity of the product they are buying. He is definitely not lying; his store, located in a public housing area in Novena was visited by over 1000 customers over the course of his 5 day pop-up. As such, I felt that perhaps the cultural appropriation that globalisation caused was not entirely bad, as it has led to an increase in cultural appreciation instead, which is a better outcome as the youth better understand the garments they purchase and wear, instead of blindly conveying an unintended message to the public.
