i love watcher so much (only bc shane and ryan), and i am literally mind boggled by their decision to put their content behind a paywall?? like what did you expect people to say to that? my flabbers have been well and truly gasted. the main content i watch of theirs is ghost files & mystery files, no way can i justify paying the monthly or annual amount for content that is not consistently posted. i don’t want my money to go toward some guy eating a burger w gold on it, sorry! awful decision and i will now be yapping about it to everyone, this has truly baffled me.
also steven lims instagram post did NOT sit well w me. wdym ‘for those who want to continue watching’ ????? im sure everybody WANTS to keep watching, they literally CANNOT keep watching because you put a price tag on something they enjoy? people can’t afford that much bc ,,,, like the economy?? the state of the world??? inflation? minimum wage not being a liveable amount? soooo tone deaf and i’m glad people are finally discussing steven cos i’ve never been a fan of him💞

My thoughts on the apology
So I've seen a lot of people accept the apology that Watcher came out with today and I just have a lot of thoughts about it.
I already commented on the video and it gathered a lot of my thoughts, so I'll paste the text here as a starter:
"I'm honestly disappointed with the response to this video. Just because they say the words "We're sorry. We messed up." doesn't mean that it's genuine. They only apologized after days of backlash and getting hurt financially. They're not apologizing because they understand and feel bad, it's just to stop the backlash and get the financial support back. They're also not acknowledging what so many fans have said: that they don't need or want high production value. They just want Ryan and Shane to be on camera doing their thing, regardless of quality (and I agree with that). And that most people literally can't afford it in addition to all their other expenses and/or they have streaming platform fatigue. Like, aren't those important too?
The fact that they're unwilling to make any other financial decisions, like cut shows that don't perform nearly as well, or downsize their staff (bc when a lot of your videos are just some people talking in a room, you really DON'T need a ton of people on cameras or editing it), and insist on still using their new platform just shows, to me, that they're not actually listening to their audience and taking what everyone's said into account. I don't believe that they're sorry for betraying the fans. I think they're just sorry because of all the backlash."
Also, a point I made in another comment on the subject: If you're apology isn't genuine, then it isn't a good apology.
I just don't believe this video to be genuine. It's so robotic and stiff that it just feels like a total PR move in order for people to stop being mad at them. And that way this whole disaster can be swept under the rug, but I don't think it should be. You know?
I know a lot of people want to believe this video was genuine, albeit scripted, but I don't buy it. They were radio silent for the entire weekend, but it doesn't take three (3) days to come up with a response to something like this. I just don't believe that; I could accept if they responded the very next day, but after three?
Nope. Not buying it.
And the way that Ryan was (supposedly) deleting negative comments on his instagram post about it? That's not the behavior of someone who realizes they made a mistake and wants to make it right with their fans. It's the behavior of someone who doesn't want to hear about how their actions hurt people.
Something very important that I don't see the majority of people talking about, either, is that the whole streaming platform idea WAS NOT SOLELY STEVEN'S IDEA. He is the CEO, yes, but it was just as much Shane and Ryan's idea (or at least they agreed with it enough and went along with it to get to this point). They're the co-founders and they could've pushed for something else if they truly didn't want to go down this route.
Also, the absolute fucking racism being levelled at Steven and Ryan is fucking abhorrent and I hate every single person that engaged in it. Many, many people were hurt by their decision on Friday but there was NO REASON to ever bring their race into it and act like scum of the earth. Shane isn't exempt from criticism and racism will never be fucking okay. A big fuck you to all the racist former Watcher fans.

I’m just imagining Ryan, Shane and Steven in a three way call (like in Mean Girls) trying to do serious damage control after seeing the uproar.
(I’m glad they decided to keep the free content but damn that was an experience.)

welp... watcher
ok I feel like the majority of Watcher fans originated from buzzfeed unsolved, which explains why the vitriol was so directed on Steven. Is there anyone else around who was a Worth It enjoyer? It was such a bigger rollercoaster of emotions seeing Adam-Andrew-Steven under one roof, then the streamer announcement, then the apology because of that.

Guys guys hear me out!
I have a theory that one of the major factors of their decision is how their sponsorships are compromising their content (which they emphasized twice now).
An example: In their renewed Winchester video, they have sponsorship from a game, and maybe even from the Winchester house tourism business itself.
There are newer information about Sarah Winchester and the house; about how it's not commissioned for ghosts but just Sarah helping to keep townspeople life afloat by hiring them to continuously build, and that the stairs leading to nowhere were previously rooms that were destroyed during earthquakes and had to be removed and sealed.
Knowing Ryan and Shane, they would put into the spotlight these information and debunk the haunted theme; an act they occasionally do. However, because they are heavily sponsored, there maybe guidelines on limiting what they can talk about. If they do debunk, the sponsor worries interest will be lessened because instead of luring people into visiting the mansion to hunt ghosts, it will just be a plain historical house, hence, decreased revenue for them.
Maybe their team wanted to deviate from depending on sponsorships that affect their content, and they'd rather depend on their patrons and be true to their videos, hence the decision.
