Album Review: It's the End of the World But It's a Beautiful Day - Thirty Seconds to Mars
Tumblr media
Not much has changed since the release of Thirty Second to Mars’ last album, 2018’s America; the band are apparently still trying to sound like a cut-price Imagine Dragons. Hell, Imagine Dragons don’t sound much like Imagine Dragons anymore…
Burnt out and no longer seen as mainstream darlings, the Las Vegas band shifted their focus towards a darker, more industrialised sound on their 2021 single, ‘Cutthroat.’
Produced by Rick fuckin’ Rubin, the song goes hard. Frontman Dan Reynolds goes to war with himself, a doom pop exorcism culminating in an eerie gospel choir. ‘Only one of us gon' make it out alive and it's not you!’ he cries in almost metal-like fashion. The moment Imagine Dragons became dark and jaded was the moment Imagine Dragons finally became interesting.
So, what of their slick stadium rock sound, then? What of the explosive drum bursts and EDM-lite synths?
It appears Reynolds has handed them down to Thirty Seconds to Mars. Now granted, the duo (consisting of Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon) were already starting to sound like Imagine Dragons on America, but now they’re going all in, bringing Reynolds on as a producer. That’s right, the guy from Imagine Dragons helped to produce Thirty Seconds to Mars’ latest album, It's the End of the World But It's a Beautiful Day. All we need now is a feature from Adam Levine and the rock-lite trifecta will finally be complete.
Every time I read the title, that Michael Bublé song pops into my head. It just signals even more pretension, even more auto-fellatio from Jared Leto, the self-styled messiah of the totally-not-a-cult Echelon, who holds ‘summer camps’ for fans on so-called Mars Island off the coast of Croatia every year.
Each song clocks in at under 3 ½ minutes, all with painfully cheesy titles: ‘Life is Beautiful,’ ‘Love These Days,’ ‘Lost These Days’ (???), ‘Never Not Love You’… That last one is right up there with The Simpsons’ ‘Lovely to Love Your Lovin.’’
And they all sound as bland, as generic and as paint-by-numbers as you’d expect, utilising the same electro pop blueprint, including explosive drum bursts and ‘woah-ohs’ in place of a real hook.
And the corny platitudes, dear reader, are they ever in abundance!
On the syrupy ‘Seasons,’ Leto opens with the line ‘People, they come, and people, they go/When the leaves change and the colors they show/Can you hold on through the seasons?’ before going on to self-flagellate (‘My fault, that's the truth, I won't lie/Fucked it all up, now I'm tryna make the wrongs right’). ‘I think that it's so strange what we call love these days/Kinda fucked up and fake,’ he later declares on ‘Love These Days’ with a shrug.
‘Life is Beautiful, meanwhile,’ is the boilerplate underdog anthem the band have long made their trademark, with Leto trying to compel the masses to revolt against some nebulous force – war, corruption, greed, women over the age of 25. Fill in the blanks yourself, Thirty Seconds to Mars isn’t gonna do all the work for you!
A lot of the album has the 50-something Leto attempting to cast himself as a moody and lovesick teen, but with the pseudo-intellectual musings of a third-rate lit professor who’s prone to dating his students. Some of the most egregious examples include the simpering ‘Never Not Love You,’ ‘Lost These Days,’ where Leto proclaims, ‘Being with you is like dancing with a loaded gun,’ and ‘Get Up Kid,’ which includes the line: ‘God broke my heart, but life ain't got any laws/Reached the border, now I'm climbin' up the walls.’
That last track is also where Leto’s strained vocals become most obvious. Throughout the album, there are vain attempts to cover up the damage with layers of reverb, autotune and other effects, but it only further emphasise his painful croaking. For real, who the fuck blows out their voice just before recording an album? Have years of screaming THIS IS WHO I REALLY AM finally taken their toll?
Thirty Seconds to Mars not only continue to accept Imagine Dragons’ hand-me-downs on It's the End of the World But It's a Beautiful Day, but also sound like a much sleazier Bastille at times. The album somehow manages to be even more unimaginative than America, cycling through the same dated beats and overwrought cliches. ‘Love These Days’ outright steals part of the melody from ‘Grease (is the Word)’ at one point!
And like The Jonas Brothers’ The Album, Jon Bellion’s stink is also on It's the End of the World..., adding his corporate pop pandering to some of the album’s worst tracks, including ‘Lost These Days’ and ‘Never Not Love You.’
But the worst thing about this album? It’s boring. There’s not a whole lot to take the piss out of here without repeating myself. At least America had that laughably misguided campaign behind it, where Leto hitchhiked his way across the country trying to get back in touch with the ‘little people,’ the common folk, the dirty povs like you and me. I didn’t even know a new Thirty Seconds to Mars album had come out until I saw a review of it on Sputnik Music. Or on Genius, I forget...
What I’m trying to say is It's the End of the World But It's a Beautiful Day is empty and soulless, and you just can’t morb to it. Thirty Seconds to Mars have managed to make being nondescript an art form at this point, like an overgrown emo version of Bebe Rexha or Ava Max. Even Imagine Dragons, once a pop rock punchline, have attempted to evolve in the years since America’s release. And when Imagine Dragons start having loftier musical aspirations than Thirty Seconds to Mars...
Maybe Jared should just retire to his creepy island and forget this whole music thing.

ROOMIES: one. introductions.
Tumblr media
→ CHAPTERS LIST WORD COUNT: 2,3k A/N: Here’s something I’ve written a long time ago and decided to bring back to Tumblr. Also, Maya’s appearance is based on Esha Gupta.
THE FIRST one she meets is Shannon, in a club, of course.
As an Indian descendant, Maya's skin color is a light brown, just like the tan that girls look forward to when going to the beach; her hair is black and her eyes are brown. Sometimes, Maya's friends say she looks like Angelina Jolie because of her plump lips and body and, altogether, her appearance has an effect on guys that is incredible.
And that's why she meets Shannon. He approaches Maya in the bar with a grin on his face, so full of himself. "What a beautiful lady is doing at a bar by herself?" He asks, leaning on the counter in front of her.
First, Maya frowns, looking at him, then she chuckles. "Oh, honey, I think you're not paying attention; a girl like me is never alone," She says, winking at him.
Shannon clearly understands that as flirt and proceeds. "I'm Shannon, Shannon Leto," He offers his hand.
"Maya," She takes his hand and Shannon brings it to his lips, kissing the back of her hand.
"What brings you here?" Shannon asks, trying to chat.
"Drinks," The woman raises her glass.
Shannon chuckles. "To America," He adds.
"I am American," The woman rolls her eyes. "Yes, Indian descendant, but American."
"Mhm," He nods, taking a sip of his beer and opening his smirk again. "And how can I bring you to my bed?" Shannon asks.
Maya laughs loudly at his poor attempt. She gets up from her seat and moves closer to him. "Try harder," She says, clinking her glass on his beer bottle and moving away quickly.
The civil engineering student doesn't dare to go after her, he just watches Maya disappears into the crowd in stunned silence. He had never been turned down before.
And this is Maya and Shannon's first encounter.
It's not unusual for different courses to have the same classes. Economic and management courses are often paired together to have statistics classes. That means Jared (a management student) and Maya (an econ student) share the classroom two times a week, but she has never paid attention to him before.
Later the same week that she had met Shannon, the statistics professor gives the class a paper to be done in groups previously chosen by him. And guess who's in Maya's group? Yes, Jared Leto. It takes him, literally, a minute to hit on her.
"Maya, huh?" Jared opens a smirk to her. "How did I've never noticed such a cute girl in my class?"
She sighs, tired already. "Maybe because you've never looked at anyone else besides yourself?" Maya raises an eyebrow.
Jared's narcissism doesn't go unnoticed; the guy loves himself more than his own mother, probably.
He frowns, not failing in noticing her feistiness, but he doesn't have time to reply to the woman's comment because she's talking again. "You're Leto, right?" She asks and he nods. "Are you related to Shannon Leto somehow?"
Jared frowns, nodding again, slower this time. "Yeah, he's my brother. Why?" He tilts his head, mentally cursing his brother for doing her first.
The woman shrugs. "I've met him a few days ago," She says, looking back at the whiteboard. "You two are clearly related," She whispers more to herself than to him, but Jared catches it.
"Have you two..." Jared trails off.
Maya opens a smile while putting her notebook into her purse. "Oh, he wishes. And so does you," She says, getting up from her seat and leaving the classroom quickly.
Her friends think she's insane to have turned down both Leto brothers. Apparently, they are the most desired guys on the campus and turn them down is almost a sin to girls. Maya doesn't care about how crazy they think she is, the Leto brothers also have a reputation. And it is not a good one.
As good-looking guys, they can get any girl they want – well, not Maya, obviously, – and the affair doesn't last longer than one night, the 'luckiest' ladies get the second night and that's all. Never a call or a text. That is what Shannon and Jared Leto are: fuckboys.
"Oh my God," One of Maya's friend says, looking at something behind her. "It's them."
Maya frowns. They're at a party at the campus’ park, on the weekend, and she's with a group of friends, holding a red cup just like everyone else. She has a simple outfit; denim shorts, tank top, sandals and a Mang Teeka on her head, and the least makeup possible. Even that simple, she's able to draw attention.
"Whoa, they're coming this way," She adds.
Suddenly, all the three girls around Maya starts smoothing their clothes to look more presentable. Trying to understand the reason for that, the Indian girl turns her head around to see what her friend has pointed out seconds earlier. Shannon and Jared Leto are coming towards the small group of women with their sunglasses and bad boy style, making several other women glance at them as they pass by.
Maya rolls her eyes, watching them come directly towards her. She turns her body fully in their direction and waits for them. "Hey," Jared greets with a smirk.
"Really? The two of you at once?" Maya raises an eyebrow. "Who's gonna be the first? C'mon, hit me."
Shannon chuckles, amused by her. "You look pretty today. Not that you're less pretty on the other days," He says.
"I really am," Maya agrees, looking at him and then shifting her eyes to Jared. "Your turn."
"I've texted you," Jared starts. "About the paper."
"Yes, I ignored it," Maya nods. "It's the weekend, I don't discuss papers on weekends, especially when there's a text group for it and you text me privately about it. Anything else?"
The younger brother looks at the older and they share a small smile. "I play guitar," Jared says, looking back at her.
She raises an eyebrow again. "So?" Maya shakes her head slightly. "Was this supposed to be something to make me get super excited about?"
"Maya!" One of her friend's scolds, glaring at her.
"I am excited about it," Another friend says and Maya gives her a look.
"Shut up and listen!" Shannon says and this surprises Maya, who raises both eyebrows but doesn't say a word. Pleased with that, the man continues. "Jay plays guitar and sings, I play drums and we have some friends that play, too. We're throwing a small get together in our frat house tonight. If you're interested, just show up," He shrugs.
"Your friends can come along if you do," Jared adds quickly, making grins show up on her friends' faces.
"She will," Maya's friend assures, making both brothers smile.
"Excuse me?" She looks at her. "I can speak for myself, thanks."
"But will you?" Shannon asks, looking at her.
Maya turns back to him. "I'll give a thought about it," She says sincerely. "That's not a yes," Maya adds.
The older Leto nods, smiling and realizing it was the better he could get from her. After that, Jared and Shannon bid their goodbyes and leave the women, but are not so far away when they hear Maya's friends squealing and pleading her to go.
The rest of the party is almost unbearable for Maya because her friends won't stop bugging her to go to the Leto's party. It only makes her more unwilling to go, but at eleven, she walks into the frat house, wearing a loose sweater dress and ankle boots.
Guys turn their heads as the maroon-skinned woman passes by, displaying a smile on her pretty face. Only two of her friends are with her (the conditions to go is that none of them can have a one-night stand with the brothers) and the trio tries to walk further into the house.
Although Shannon said it was gonna be 'a small get together', the frat house is crowded and it is impossible to give two steps before stopping and asking people to move.
Halfway towards what Maya judged to be the living room, she runs into a guy. "Sorry," The guy turns to look at her and Maya raises her head to see a smirk forming on Shannon's face. "Oh, hey! You came!" He cheers.
"Well, yes," She nods. "A small get together, huh?" Maya raises her eyebrow and he smiles widely, now sure that is her thing.
He nods too. "Yeah. You should see the big ones," Shannon chuckles and she does too, which surprises him. "Hey, I don't see drinks in hands," He points out, looking down at the women's hands. "Here, take this, I'll get some for your friends too."
Shannon shoves his blue cup into Maya's hands and vanishes looking for drinks for her friends. The girl looks down at her hands to the cup's content, apparently, it is beer, but Maya smells it anyway, unsure if it is safe to drink from an unknown's cup.
Even though Shannon is a fuckboy, Maya doesn't think he's the type that drugs girls to get what he wants. So, she shrugs off and brings the cup to her lips, taking a sip from it. As quickly as he disappeared, Shannon comes back with more two blue cups and gives it to her friends.
"C'mon, we're taking music suggestions," Shannon says, taking her hand and dragging her across the house.
"What?" Maya asks, trying to follow him.
"Music suggestions," He repeats. "Did you forget that we play?" Shannon comes to a stop, right in the middle of the living room where the instruments are set up and Jared is hanging out with some friends. "Look who I've found."
Jared's blue eyes lands on the woman. "Damn," He says simply, taking his wallet out and handing Shannon fifty bucks.
Maya frowns, not liking it. "Did you two bet on me?" She asks, looking at them.
"Well..." Jared starts, scratching the back of his neck.
"Have you ever considered that I can leave at any moment?" Maya adds. "How 'bout now? C'mon," She turns around to her friends, ready to leave.
"What?" One of her friends asks, disappointment clear in her voice. "We just arrived."
"And now we're leaving," The woman says.
"No, no, no, don't go," Shannon rushes to stop her. "Sorry 'bout that, we're idiot frat guys. But, stay," He pleads.
"That you are," Maya agrees, pissed about their childish behavior but she gives Shannon a small nod, deciding to stay when she looks deep into his eyes. "Fine."
"Lemme introduces you to the guys," He says, motioning to the people sitting around. "That's Tomo, culinary; Vicki, Tomo's girl, veterinary; Emma, you know," Shannon says and Maya nods to the woman. Emma is a management student too, in Jared's class, therefore, she's in statistics class too. "Jamie and Stevie, something about computers, I don't know."
"Computer science," Both the guys reply in unison tiredly, making Maya chuckle.
"What do you want to hear, milady?" Jared asks.
"Oh, nothing," Maya says, sitting beside one of his friends. "I have no desire to hear your voice."
Stevie laughs at her comeback. "She's feisty."
She quirks an eyebrow. "And you know me for like thirty seconds to say I'm feisty, Stevie, something about computers?" Maya says, repeating what Shannon said when introducing him.
"Computer science," Jamie repeats.
"Oh, yes, that. Whatever," She shakes her head.
"I like you," Stevie, something about computers, decides and Maya smiles.
"Have you heard a song named Where the Streets Have No Name?" One of Maya's friends asks, making Jared look at her.
"Yeah, U2," He nods, opening a smile.
She nods. "Exactly, can you play it?"
"Sure I can, sweetheart," Jared opens his knee-weaker smile at her, making the girl sigh.
Maya rolls her eyes at her friends while the boys make their way to the instruments. Shannon goes to his drums, Tomo picks a guitar, Jamie picks an acoustic guitar, Stevie picks a bass and Jared goes for the microphone. He starts singing softly and the woman has to admit that he has a nice voice and, in a matter of seconds, everybody is chanting the song with them.
The smile and laugh of the Indian descendant is a victory for both brothers and she keeps doing it for the rest of the night. For her, it turns to be better than she thought it would be. Even having to turn down both brothers again, they are nicer than she thought they were.
"So, you're Indian," Tomo asks, looking at Maya.
"Well, fifty percent. My mother is one-hundred percent. I'm American, born and raised," She replies, smiling at him.
"Your dad?" Vicki is the one asking now.
"Totally American, white ass boy," Maya says, chuckling with both of them.
"How did they met?" She asks, interested.
"My mom was a dancer and my dad is a very successful entrepreneur. He was on a business trip and the Indian company or whatever it was that he was working with hosted a party. Mom was one of the dancers hired to entertain and make the Americans invest. She met my dad and... Me!" Maya chuckles again, opening her arms.
"Did he invested?" Jared asks, smiling.
Maya smiles at him. "I don't know, I guess," She laughs. "How about you?"
"I'm one-hundred percent Croatian. Born in Sarajevo then moved to America when I was 17," Tomo explains.
"Oh, nice," Maya nods. "And you're Australian, right?" She turns to Emma.
They chat during the whole party and Maya gets to know a little bit more about the brothers. They left Bossier City, Louisiana, with their mother, who raised them as a single parent, their father died when they were kids and they didn't get to know him. And the main reason for both of them to be there (in a university) is to make their mother proud of what they had become.
Maya starts to respect them for that and they start a different relationship after that. First step: acquaintances with more politeness on Maya’s part. Second step: very good friends.
Once Shannon and Jared realized Maya isn't gonna sleep with them at any cost, they accepted the fact that she's only a very good friend.

A Man On Fire - Chapter 56
Tourmanager..come on, where was she? Could they get out of that huge van any slower? Sean..oh there she was, he hurried over to her “didn't you get my e-mail?” and gently grabbed her arm, “Ok Jay, you really need to stop?!” she yanked her arm free again and gave him a pair of big, rolling eyes before she walked inside with the rest. He had to catch up with her again “what is your problem?” he pushed her inside one of the first dressingrooms “my problem? Boy I'm glad I didn't say yes to marrying you!”. Jared was taken aback, his mouth forming a silent 'O', it hurt like a motherfucker “really?” his sad blues drilled into hers, melting her frozen heart “no..no of course not, I'm just..” she hesitated. “Maybe you shouldn't propose to me when I'm ovulating” she said with a deadpan expression on her face, defusing the situation instantly, a big smile formed on his face “what?”, the tension went right out of the door together with her seriousness “you heard me, yes I'm ovulating and yes I'm going completely bonkers and my hormones are all over the place and no you really shouldn't be asking me those type of questions that time of the month” she rolled her eyes dramatically but her heart was smiling again. Jared walked up to her “so, does that mean I can ask you all the other times of the month?” and stopped until they were toe to toe, his hands carefully looking for a spot to land on, “don't push your luck!” she mumbled when his hands ended up on her hips. “I know it's healthy to argue for a couple, but I don't want to fight anymore, I can't take it, I was this close to cancelling the show tonight” he scrunched up his nose, he just wanted to kiss her, “oh Jay, if you can't take arguing then you shouldn't be in a relationship, nobody can see eye to eye all the time” she ran her hands up and down over his muscular upper arms, he didn't say anything, he just smiled and kissed the hell out of her.
Sean had been hovering around that dressingroom for a while so as soon as she headed out of the room, he caught up with her “you know, we're one man, or woman, short tonight, d'you wanna come up?”. The fear in her eyes when she looked at him was unmistakeable, “I don't know..uhm..” she stammered, she hadn't forgotten that he was the reason she nearly plummeted to the ground because he'd rather have her dead than with Jared. What was she to do? She wanted to make herself useful and seeing a show from the top of the venue was so much cooler than just watching from the side of the stage “I'll think about it and let you know” she quickly mumbled as Jared appeared behind them. Sean quickly shrugged and nodded “fine yeah”, seeing Jared made him hurry back to the stage, “what did he want?” Jared's arm snuck around her waist, “he wants me to go up there, they're one light guy short and he wants me to do it”. Jared took a deep breath “I don't care what he wants, what do you want?” the voice of reason she liked so much was back, hallelujah, “I would love to do it, it's a great idea but..” she pushed her hands deep in her pockets and looked at her feet. “You want to do it, but not with him around” he finished her answer, this boyfriend of her's was one in a million, he sounded like he could solve every puzzle in her life, “Yeah” she covered the hand resting on her hip with hers “I guess I still don't trust him”. Jared threw his arms around her and kissed her softly “and you have every reason not to, so you'll go up there and I'll make sure he gets a job on the ground with the videowalls, how does that sound?” he breathed against her lips, “perfect!..thanks Jay” she sighed, god it felt good to feel that weight lifting from her shoulders. “You're welcome, I think it's really hot to have my future wife swinging in ropes above my head” he grinned and slapped her butt, “whaaatttt?” she raised her hands in despair as she walked away “you're a dirrrrty man, Leto” her hiccupping laughter curled around his heart “but hey, I like it”.
And one, two..the first deafening drums of 'Monolith', and the wall that was still closed lit up like a funky Christmas tree, yes...yesyesyes! High above the ground a shiver down her spine felt even more intense than down there, was it the first time she saw how truly beautiful and amazing this all was? Her work, the colours, the monolith that would slowly start to rise in a few seconds..ok focus now, don't get distracted by the thunderous roar of the crowd, she looked down greeted by a wave and a kiss that was blown up to her, he looked as ridiculous as gorgeous in that beautiful dark, richly embroidered, velvet cape. Giggling she watched him dissapear inside the cube..and with the lift of so much colourful weight the room exploded, from now on full focus on the show, which was damn hard to do if your lover was driving all the hungry, starstruck women down there crazy. Look at her, I could have been up there with her..a man can dream right that she would even be remotely interested in me, right? no don't go there again, she's with him now, do I like that? Hell no! But I guess I have to accept it, for now..they're not gonna last, of course not..this relationship had disaster written all over it, let them run their course and once that is done..BAM! Make sure you're on the scene with a big, masculine shoulder to cry on and Bob's your uncle! Just don't fuck it up like you did last time, be patient and everything will sort itself out. Mr. High-and-Mighty there on that stage won't be so high and mighty then, he won't know what hit him, me, her best friend since forever, will be the victor, not that pompous ass with his ridiculous outfits that had to cover up the fact that the music sucked big time.
”Jay, come on man..” Shannon gestured at his brother to keep up after the show but he only stared at the ceiling “just a minute” he mumbled watching her walk the narrow beam that would lead her down again.  Why did he always hold his breath until he watched her hands curl around the sides of the rope ladder? Why? Because it would be unbearable to see her tumble to the ground again, he would rather die than see that happen again, she was a part of him, if anything happened to her, it happened to him, simple as that. “Oumpfhh” she skipped the last few steps and just jumped down where she was greeted by Jared who threw his arms around her and kissed her damp forehead “whoooaa, don't! I'm sweaty” it was damn hot up there and she longed for a shower, ugh he was still sweaty too. “So? Maybe we can take a shower together?” he mumbled, in the corner of her eye she could see the crew make gagging gestures, “of course we can, you in your shower and me in mine, these dressing rooms aren't exactly private” she giggled and rolled her eyes. Jared seemed to come back to earth “fine, have it your way, but you're all mine later on” he groaned, “yo kids, come one, time to party” Shannon whistled and rolled his eyes.
“Hey..” Sean jumped in front of her as she stepped out of the bathroom, that shower had been amazing “told you you'd do great”, startled she pulled the towel a little tighter around her, what the hell happened to the promise that he wasn't even allowed around her?. “Sean, I really don't think this is the place or the time, how did you even get in here?” she quickly scanned the room, did I forget to lock that damn door? Whatever, he wasn't supposed to be in here, just try and act cool, whatever you do don't let him see your unease and fear, people like him thrived on it. “Everyone was waiting for you and they got a bit fed up so I told them to head on out and I'd wait for you”, what? And Jared left too? No that wasn't possible, he just wouldn't let that happen. Sean walked up to her, what the fuck, stay away “that's sweet, Sean..but if you don't mind I would really love to get some clothes on now” don't stammer, don't let him see you're getting really uncomfortable. “Hey honey, you still in the shower, got room for one more?” the door flew open and Jared grinning from ear to ear appeared, “what the..” he immediately stopped in his tracks and the grin instantly disappeared from his face. His eyes flew from Coco to Sean “Sean, could you give us a minute, please?” he scraped his throat, his voice sounded supercalm but she could feel a storm brewing, please don't let him take it out on me again, this is not my fault. “Uhh yeah, of course..” Sean just gave a little shrug and left the room , hands casually in his pockets like nothing had happened, when the door closed Harper exhaled deeply., trouble, yeah definitely trouble ahead.
For a few seconds all that could be heard was the faint buzzing of the lamps above their heads, his eyes seemed to grow darker “what the..?” his eyes scanned her semi-naked body up and down. “What the fuck was he doing in here? You're practically naked, I swear I'm about to lose my shit! Who let him in here?” he was practically fuming with anger. “I hope you're not even suggesting that I let him in, because I didn't! I just got out of the shower and there he was..” there was a tremble to her voice “now can I just get dressed?” she went bright red like she was embarrassed and on the verge of crying. “Hey” he slowly walked up to her trying to follow her eyes that avoided any form of contact while she reached for her clothes and stuffed her two arms in the same sleeve at once, that's how agitated she was. “Hey..wait..Harper? Coco? Look at me..come on look at me?” he grabbed her shoulders, the shirt thrown to the floor in frustration and anger, “I didn't initiate anything if that's what you're thinking Jared” the anger and dissapointment in her eyes was almost unbearable. “That's not what I'm saying, not at all! Do you hear me?” he kissed her forehead as she wiped the tears of frustation from her eyes, “I guess I don't, Jared, so what are you really saying? I'm so done with all this bickering and these accusations, I should have stayed at home, far far away from here!” she sniffed and rubbed her hands. “I'm not accusing you of anything, darling, really I'm not, I'm just shocked to waltz in here thinking to do delicious things to my girl under the shower, only to find that freak here talking to my half naked girlfriend. “I mean if it were the other way round, I bet you would freak out too” he made her sit down and put his arms around her, his chin resting on her head while it found the contact with his chest she so needed right now. “He said the rest of you were fed up waiting for me, and he wanted to check on me..it's like I'm causing trouble wherever I go, when all I want to do is paint, not being on tour chased by some lunatic who I used to think was a friend” she sighed, the slight touch of her lips brushing against the skin of his chest was intoxicating. “I want whatever you want, I just want you to be happy, I was just hoping you'd be happy here on tour with me” she felt his voice vibrate through his skin and she suddenly felt all warm and fuzzy, what was she saying? Of course she was happy “Listen, I'm happy, I'm happy wherever you are, and maybe I'm overreacting but somehow I just feel caged, a golden cage definitely but it's still a cage”. It was hard to hear her say that, “so, you want to go back to New York?” please say no, say no, change your mind and stay here with me, “of course I do” his heart plummethed right to his feet when he heard her say that “but not without you, so I'm staying right here with you and out of Sean's way”. Jared pulled back a little so she had to look up and he could let his lips crash down on hers “I love you, you know that?” he breathed against her lips, “I know, and I love you too, just start trusting me and stop being so insecure, it doesn't suit you” Harper folded her hands around his neck. “Point taken, now get dressed so we can go get a drink before I can rip them back off of you” he grinned, “ah, now we're talking, the promise of booze and sex, I like it” she jumped out of his arms, rushing to get her clothes on with a giggle.

Single Dad Jared Headcanons
Tumblr media
1992-1999
- becoming a father was not something on jared’s to-do list, he was still 20 years old (she was born early in the year) but he thought everything would okay if he had the mother of the child on the parenthood journey with him
but everything wasn’t okay
the mother died shortly after delivery
he was heartbroken and now here he is, a 20 year old struggling actor, and now father to a newborn daughter
- plans of moving to new york are now shot as he has to take care of a baby
speaking of
instead he now travels between louisiana and california for auditions
relying on his mom and shannon to watch her while he’s away until he has enough money to rent an apartment so they could move there.
- jared gets work sometime in 1992 and he’s so happy he could cry. finally he has just enough money to get a babysitter and to fly shannon out to la
- he gets minor roles for about a year until my so called life
by now she’s two years old, and already in daycare
the cast and crew always ask about her (let’s give her a name and call her kaela)
which makes him to bring her to set sometimes
they all love her and fawn over her
during his break he reads to her and watches sesame street with her
- by 1995, jared’s career is on full steam and he’s getting roles left and right, eventually landing a movie role.
which means more money coming in and he can finally afford a house
he can take kaela to toys r us and buy her plenty of barbie dolls and other stuff
- he finally feels like he’s able to give his daughter the life she deserves
- maybe this dad thing isn’t so hard after all, he’s managed for three years with no accidents
- until he has to leave to prepare and film for prefontaine
shannon takes care of kaela while he’s away
which isn’t so bad. he’s like a second father to her
but kaela still misses her father and is too young to understand why jared is away all the time
constance visits also; she misses her grandbaby
constance may or not be pressuring shannon about having kids of his own after he sees him drawing in chalk in the driveway one day
- jared and kaela preparing for “big girl school”
she loves picking out her backpack and lunch box
he knows that kaela only needs the 24 pack of crayola crayons but 64 pack WITH THE SHARPENER IN THE BACK is on the shelf above, so he gets the 64 pack
who wouldn’t want to be friends with the kid who has the 64 pack?
- jared being emotional as he drops her off
he obviously sticks out like a sore thumb
every father is either dressed in khakis or in expensive suits with shiny black shoes and gold watches with gelled back hair or clean haircuts
and here’s jared with his longish hair, wearing the t-shirt he wore to bed last night and ripped jeans. he can already tell he won’t have anything in common with any of the parents here
maybe private school wasn’t such a good idea, but it was the school closest to the house
- jared gets bored while kaela’s at school and he doesn’t know what to do with himself
the house is way too quiet
grocery shopping isn’t all that fun without her
neither is cleaning the house
he can’t even get through the day without her, how is he supposed to get through 12 YEARS?
- he gets used to it though when he hears kaela talking about her new friends during dinner
- second grade is easier as he has stuff to do for thirty seconds to mars
they have a routine going
although jared can’t drop her off anymore and kaela now has to take the school bus
he’s a little uncomfortable because now people other than his bandmates and family and friends know where he lives
it also teaches kaela how to be a little more independent and also about time management, so a win-win.
2000-2010
- kaela’s growing up and she’s starting to form an identity outside of jared
she has her group of friends and interests
kaela is definitely a harry potter fan
jared takes her to see the movies
thirty seconds to mars is becoming more successful in the rock world
- kaela is literally growing up right in front of his eyes
she looks just like her mother
oh god, kaela needs a mother
is he ready to start dating again?
he can’t rely on his mom for everything
- kaela starts middle school and jared is FREAKING OUT
valentine’s day in middle school is his worst nightmare
why does she have so many cards from boys???
shannon, solon, and matt teasing him about it
him glaring at any boy who stares at her for too long
- at this point jared is dating cameron diaz
when jared introduces them, kaela doesn’t know what to do
she’s happy for him, and she likes cam a lot but she’s so used to it just being the two of them it feels... odd
they do get along though
kaela being there for jared when he and cameron breaks up
- jared now considers middle school as a cake walk compared to high school
he has to restrain himself from choking fans his daughter’s age when they comment about her
of course the media also notices how stunning the leto girl is becoming
even more valentine’s day cards from boys
yes, my daughter is very pretty now stop staring at her, boy in front of us in the trader joe’s checkout line
- just because jared’s easy going in his interviews doesn’t mean he’ll be easy going on the guy trying to take his daughter away from him
okay, maybe not take her away from him, more like date
he’s definitely a chaperone on dates
if jared’s not available then shannon goes
- kaela having her first boyfriend is very emotional for jared
he’s jared’s worst nightmare, the stereotypical l.a. rich kid. seriously kaela, wtf are you thinking?
he’s lowkey manipulative af (let’s call him brandon)
like that time kaela got asked to promote a clothing line. jared was happy for her, brandon, not so much
thankfully kaela dumped him before senior year
- speaking of senior year
kaela is busier than ever. she’s filling out college applications and going to college interviews every time he turns around
jared doesn’t have to pay schools to get kaela a spot in school unlike certain celeb parents. kaela works for everything she has, thank you very much
- when graduation is around the corner, he’s an emotional wreck
invitations have been sent
kaela already has a school picked out, louisiana state university to be exact
it’s also closer to constance if she needs to get away sometimes
and also closer to her mom’s side (jared knows about kaela contacting relatives from her mom’s side, and he’s happy that his daughter is getting to know them)
- jared and shannon almost fighting other parents to get the perfect shots of their kids
did i forget to mention that kaela’s valedictorian?
jared being so incredibly proud of his little girl who is not a little girl anymore
hearing his daughter’s full name and seeing her walk across the stage brings him to tears
her mom would be so proud
he knows that kaela’ s going to be successful no matter what she chooses to do in life
present
- kaela is absolutely stunning; she’s in her 20s now and the media always do those transformation things complete with slideshows
she chose a profession that she loves and is passionate about
jared, shannon, constance and everyone else are so proud of her
it requires her to travel A LOT so jared has a hard time keeping track but they talk/facetime every week
kaela being in the city of angels video and it also showed pictures and videos of her growing up
kaela being best friends with chloe since jared introduced them
-kaela is also instagram goals
she’s friends with plenty of celebs and has a good following on social media
kaela still has her own life and career that’s not in the entertainment industry
but damn does she know how to take a good selfie
- kaela helping her uncle with his coffee company
she works pop up shops around the country if she’s able to do it
kaela and shannon are partners in crime
they also drum together too
shannon being a Proud Uncle
is this really the same kid who he used to push on the swing sets and watch disney movies with?
- no matter how old kaela gets, she’s always gonna be jared’s little girl.

One Shot: Stranger Danger
Tumblr media
I thought I’d take a break from In Too Deep and try out this One shot with Shannon. I mean – what if Mr Leto came to your rescue, fighting off the advances of an unwanted admirer?
I’m open to One Shot requests and Imagines. If anyone wants to throw ideas my way, feel free to ask and I’ll do my best, as much as time allows xx
Warning: Total fluff!
Danni was aware of his eyes – they never left her, tracking her every move as she pushed and shoved her way outside. The buzz of the club was muted as the door swung closed behind her, the cold night air tickling the bare skin on her arms. He was nowhere to be seen and Danni moved quickly, eager to put distance between her and the guy inside.
She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone. It answered on the first ring. “Hey Danni, where are you?” Danni had been friends with Shannon now for the past three years and he’d always been there for her through thick and thin. He was a shoulder to cry on after relationships went bad and almost always there to celebrate the good times.
Tonight, Danni needed reassurance, feeling unnerved by what had happened in the club. “Shan, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have called so late but this guy’s been staring at me and following me and I just don’t know but it scared the shit out of me, and now I’m calling you and I’m feeling .... just a little stupid ....”
The words tumbled out, drowned slightly by the shouts from clubbers hurrying along the sidewalk and horns blaring from passing cars.
“Danni where are you? Stop for a moment and listen to me!” Shannon said, his voice sounding slightly frantic.
“I’m downtown near the Oasis club. Shannon, don’t worry. I’ll be OK. I was just slightly freaked out.”
“I don’t care. Just stay where you are and don’t move. I’ll come and get you.”
No matter what Danni said, Shannon wasn’t taking no for an answer. It had been that way ever since they first met at a party organised by mutual friends. He’d insisted they keep in touch. Shannon’s job kept him away for long spells but when he was in town, they met for coffee or lunch to catch up. Danni loved his smile and bear hug greetings; Shannon loved her chatter and the chaos she brought to his life.
“Shannon ....” Danni paused, “Thanks. I’m not far from the club. I’ll look out for you. I’ve got my phone if you need me.” She ended the call and wrapped her arms around herself, aware of the dip in temperature after the heat and sweat of Oasis. She pulled her purse close to her body and turned around to head back so Shannon could find her.
Tumblr media
As she turned, Danni felt the hairs rise on her skin, goosebumps from the midnight breeze. But there was something else mixed in with it. The sidewalk had emptied and neon from a nearby sign brought a red glow to the night. Suddenly she was aware of a movement behind her; a hand on her shoulder forcing her away from the club and into the shadows.
Danni tried shouting but it was like one of those dreams where your cries become silent screams for help.
She caught sight of his face - it was definitely him. Danni was pinned against the wall, his hand covering her mouth. She felt tears pricking her eyes and she hoped to God Shannon wasn’t too far away. Panic took hold as she struggled to breathe. “No,” Danni’s voice was muffled as his hands assaulted her body.
“Please no,” she begged, tears streaking her cheeks. She felt her phone vibrating, giving a glimmer of hope. It stopped and then started to vibrate again.
Tumblr media
Shannon pulled up just short of the club and killed the engine. His fingers drummed on the dashboard, remembering how worried Danni had sounded.
There was no answer from her phone, which was so unlike her. They’d only spoken ten minutes ago, so she couldn’t have gone far.
Shannon opened the door and stepped out. It wasn’t busy, so where the hell had she gone. It was just one long boulevard filled with fast food joints, neon lights and clubs. ‘Why the hell had Danni come down here,’ he wondered.
Tumblr media
Danni heard a car door slam nearby and hoped desperately that it was Shannon. Using all her strength, she thrust her knee upwards, connecting with her attacker. He let out a groan and dropped his hand for a moment. Danni’s scream echoed off the walls of the alleyway.
“Danni! ” Suddenly she was aware of being pulled away, dragged to safety. “What the fuck’s happened?” Shannon pushed her to safety before turning and launching himself at the stranger. Two punches dropped him to the ground. Shannon pulled away, feeling a rush of anger that if acted on, could easily land this guy in hospital for several months.
He shifted to his knees, bending over so he could be heard over the background noise. “You ever do this again, I will fucking kill you.” Shannon gave him one last push before standing up and grabbing Danni.
Her dress was torn and cheeks streaked with mascara. Shannon put his arms around her and guided her quickly to the car, head down, desperate not to attract attention.
The drive back to Shannon’s place was mostly in silence, punctuated by sobs from Danni, wrapped up in Shannon’s shirt in the passenger seat. It was an even quicker journey back, the LA traffic thinning, cars’ tail lights flaring red in the night sky.
Shannon unlocked the door and helped Danni inside. He took her hand and led her into the bathroom, turning on the shower until steam started to billow out, misting up the mirror.
He pulled her close, knowing that in that moment, she needed to feel protected. Danni rested her head on Shannon’s chest, comforted by the gentle rise and fall of his breathing, feeling his hand stroke her back.
“I’m sorry about everything,” she sobbed. “I was just walking back so you could find me and he grabbed me and he pushed me and ...” Danni felt Shannon’s finger rest on her lips.
“Sshhh. I know it’ll be hard,” he whispered, “but try not to think about what happened. I’m here now and I promise you, you’re safe.” He pulled her closer again, resting his chin on her head while massaging her neck, easing away some of the tension. “Why don’t you get in the shower and then we’ll talk?”
Danni knew he’d felt her body tense as he pulled away. His eyes met hers, questioning. “What’s up Dan?” He tucked a stray stand of hair that had fallen across her face. “You must get in the shower,” he said, pulling her into another hug. Shannon then gently started to unzip her dress, lifting it over her head until Danni stood naked in front of him. He placed his hand on the small of her back, guiding her into the shower. “Shall I stay here?” he asked, not feeling able to leave her in such a vulnerable state.
Danni nodded, not wanting to lose sight of him. The water jets drummed into her skin, washing away the smells if not the memory of the night. She soaped her body, rubbing every inch of skin before washing her hair. Then she turned off the water and smiled as Shannon held out a huge towel, wrapping her tightly and drying off her body.
“Thank you.” Danni didn’t know what else to say. His hands continued to slowly rub the towel across her skin, making sure not to hurt her. He looked away before scooping up her clothes. “These are going in the bin,” he said. He walked out of the bathroom, before returning with one of his T-shirts. “Here, take this.” He removed the towel and eased her arms into the air, slipping the shirt over her head and pulling it down to cover the curves of her body. His fingers grazed across Danni’s hips, coming to rest around her waist. He buried his face in her hair, his other hand at the back of her neck, pulling her into his chest.
“Danni, please don’t do that to me again.” She could feel him breathing hard, fighting to control his emotions. “I wouldn’t say this to anyone else but you scared the shit out of me back there.”
He looked totally frazzled, she had to admit. His eyes were rimmed with dark shadows and his shirt was torn from brawling in the alley earlier. “Shannon, I can’t say sorry again,” she said, pulling him down to sit next to her on the bed. “I called you because you’re the one person I trusted to help.” Danni looked away, aware this was unchartered territory.
Silence floated between them until his rough hand cupped her chin, and she felt his lips graze down her cheek, his scruff rubbing against her newly washed skin. Danni let her fingers drift over his face, watching as his hazel eyes darkened.
“Dan, come here,” he whispered, pulling her into his tattooed arms, his lips moving ever closer until they connected, desperate to find comfort in friendship. His tongue teased open Danni’s mouth, probing deeper, wanting more, until she allowed herself to melt into the warmth of his embrace, scared it would end all too soon.
The endless cups of coffee they’d shared and woodland walks were a far cry from sitting on a bed together. Danni turned back to face him and opened her mouth to speak. But before the words spilled out, Shannon placed a finger on her lips again.
“Stay with me.” That’s all he said. He pulled back the comforter and they crawled underneath, savouring the warmth of each other’s bodies; friends but maybe a bit more .....

Presque Vu -- Chapter 37
C/N: frank sexual discussion
Once they had exited the parking lot and were on their way back to Jared's, Shannon reached over and twined his fingers in with Raina's. “You okay?” he asked her.    Raina gave his hand a squeeze. “Sure. Why wouldn't I be?”    “It was a pretty sneaky thing Jared did, springing that interview on you like that. I thought Emma already had you fill out paperwork.”    “It was sneaky, but I think he was right. I would have worried about it too much if I had known what he intended to do.”
“You know, Raina, just because you guys have an arrangement in the bedroom doesn't mean you have to let him boss you around the rest of the time....”   “That's really not what that was, Shannon....”    Shannon ignored her interruption and continued. “He just does that, just jumps in and takes things over and tells everyone what to do. Like he's always automatically in charge, no matter what the situation, and it's fucking ridiculous.”    “Shannon is this about me and Jared or you and Jared?”    “It's about Jared.”   Raina gave a sigh and took his hand back. “I thought that we agreed that you and Jared were going to keep your issues between the two of you. Let me decide what is appropriate in my relationship with Jared, okay? Have a little faith in me?”    “It's not you that...” Shannon grumbled and squeezed her hand. “Fine. But I really do hope this doesn't mean you're going to take that job with Moderne.”   “Would you be angry if I did?”    “Not angry, no. I'm not trying to tell you what to do, Raina. It's just that I was really looking forward to you being with us on this tour. You can't try to turn me into some villain for being disappointed about you not being there or having to miss you instead of being with you.”    “I know. I didn't mean it that way either. I doubt that I'll take the position. I want to be with you guys too, but I'd be crazy not to at least consider whatever offer Kernan has to make.”     Shannon returned his hand to the steering wheel as they pulled off the freeway. He focused on the road, drumming his thumb against the leather-bound wheel as he continued to speak. “I know you're right. It just feels like we're finally starting to find our rhythm together and I don't want to start over. I'll support whatever decision you make though.”    “Thank you for that.” Raina had to admit she was a little relieved to hear him confirm his support. She could tell he was struggling with his own desires versus hers and hoped this whole thing wouldn't veer off into petulant brat territory. Both Letos seemed to have a large capacity for that.    “I'm a little afraid to bring up this next thing,” Shannon began, starting to reach of Raina's hand but then gripping the steering wheel again. “But before I do, I need you to know that I meant what I said about being done with other women. I'm not asking for permission to be with anyone else.”     Raina returned her hands to her lap and sat up a little straighter. “I don't think I like where this is going.”     Shannon continued. “I was just thinking. We'll need to keep up appearances on the road. People expect certain behavior out of me, and Jared too, for that matter.”    “Yeah, I bet they do," Raina added drily, deciding she definitely did not like where this was going.    “We should probably be seen with other women occasionally.”    “Define “being seen with” please.”    “Raina, stop scowling at me like that. It would just be for show. There are women that I know, that I'm friends with in some of these places, I can make arrangements, take them out for some drinks, bring them back to the hotel...”   “Women that you know?”    “Dammit, Raina. I said it would just be for show. I don't really want to have this discussion or jump through all these hoops either. But what are our options? You know if you at least acknowledged that you were seeing Jared then I'd be the only one that has to put up this charade.”   “No, I am definitely not about to go any level of public with my relationship with Jared now that I'm working for him, no matter how directly or indirectly that might be.”    “Then what do you propose we do, exactly? Because if we don't do anything, someone is going to get suspicious.”    “Well, they'll get suspicious but not necessarily about me, right?”    “Any level of suspicious is more than we want. We don't need anyone looking at us any more closely.”    Raina knew he was right, but that just made it that much more infuriating. She hadn't thought about this part, about what they might have to do to keep up appearances. She certainly didn't think she'd have to have a front row seat for it. A picture of Shannon with some inappropriately dressed hottie practically drooling over him popped into her head, quickly followed by another thought that stopped her cold.    “Shannon?”  It was just a word, just his name, but she saw Shannon immediately pick up the change in her attitude. “Yeah? What's wrong?”   “How many times have you and Jared made this little arrangement? The poly thing, I mean. Not the beards.”    “A few. Why?”   Raina looked at the road going past. The area had become more residential and they were near the house now. The neatly posh houses with their professionally landscaped lawns and iron gates rolled slowly past them, reminding Raina for one more time tonight how very far from home she was. “Was it always only one girl?”   Shannon's hesitation told her all she needed to know. “It hasn't always been this arrangement, no,” he hedged.    “Oh god, I am so fucking stupid. Of course it hasn't. When were you going to spring this on me? Were you just going to invite someone else along and hope I went along with it?”    'What? What the hell, Raina! We wouldn't do that. For starters, we're just getting things settled between the three of us. The last thing this relationship needs is another person in it.”    “You're damn right about that.”   “Secondly,” Shannon added pointedly as he tried to keep Raina from going off on a rant. “It hasn't always been more than three. Three can work out fine. If at some point we were to add someone else, then we would all sit down and have a very real discussion about what that means for us and if we actually want that. You haven't indicated that you do, and since this is all new to you, I just assumed that three was good for you. I think Jared has too. That is a reasonable assumption, right?”    Raina picked at the leather covering the armrest next to her. She had been furious when she thought they were trying to sneak something past her. Now that Shannon was asking, the resounding “Yes!” that she would have expected to come out of her mouth seemed stuck in her throat.   “Raina?” Shannon asked again. “God, don't go all silent treatment on me. I swear we aren't trying to manipulate you into anything. Nothing happens that we don't all agree on, I promise.”   “No, I know...” Raina faltered. She felt dizzy, and when Shannon's truck came to a stop in Jared's drive she opened the door and gulped in some of the cool night air. Did she want this? She had felt a sort of odd relief at the thought of having someone else to share the brothers' manic energy and odd mood swings with. Someone that might be on her side, someone to share her concerns. She didn't feel jealousy, or anger, but something that almost felt like an affirmation. Could it possibly be that was something that she really wanted?  Fuck, how many turns are there on this wild damn ride of a relationship? “Can we just talk about this later? I don't want to have an argument right now and I do understand there are appearances we have to keep up.”    She could hear the relief in Shannon's voice as he sped around to help her from the vehicle. “Sure. We don't have to talk about it at all if you don't want to.”    Once they got inside Shannon started some coffee and Raina went to splash some cool water on the back of her neck. She looked at herself in the big mirror over Jared's sink before fishing her lipstick out of her clutch and applying a fresh coat. The more she thought about the prospect of eventually adding someone else to the relationship the more conflicted she became. The initial flash of relief faded into something more cloudy. She might have been willing to share Shannon she supposed, she had been for most of this relationship already, after all, but sharing Jared was an entirely different matter. It wasn't because she felt any closer to him than to Shannon, but the nature of their relationship was very different. She was looking to him to guide her through new waters. She wasn't yet ready to divide his attention. She didn't know if she ever would be.    While she continued to freshen up and re-tame her curls, she heard someone come in the front door and then voices in another part of the house. No doubt Shannon was filling Jared in on their little chat in the car.  Raina pushed her new concerns aside, checked her dress, and went to join them.    They were in the living room when she found them, and Shannon stopped whatever he was talking about as soon as he saw her. Jared had his back turned as she entered the room and when Shannon stopped talking he turned around quickly. Raina half expected him to scowl but instead, an encouraging smile spread across his face.    “Did I tell you tonight that you look beautiful? Because really, you are just stunning in that dress.”    Raina returned his smile, giving him a little spin and enjoying the way her dress swirled around her legs. As she watched the way the fabric puffed out and then collapsed in time with her movements, in just that moment she was a little girl again, staring down at the skirt of her shiny red satin Christmas dress and her patent Mary-Janes, waiting to go to church with her mother and grandmother, and for just that moment, her concerns slipped away
. Shannon stepped in front of her, his hand quickly finding her waist and giving her a quick twirl before stepping away again. He then waved his vape pen at her and pointed towards the door.    “I'm going to take a break outside. I'll leave you two to it.”   Then just like that, he was gone, and Raina found herself alone with Jared, her palms growing clammy again. Jared had dressed conservatively this evening, in a black button up shirt, slacks, and a jacket, but in true Jared fashion, he had left probably two too many buttons open at the top of his shirt. He had discarded the jacket already but he stood there with his hands in his pockets, looking devastatingly handsome, watching as Shannon left and Raina settled down.    “I was so proud of you tonight. You were absolutely amazing with David. I knew you'd knock his socks off,” he told her as stepped forward and took her hand. “Of course I hope he doesn't change your mind about the position with Wonderland but at least now I'll feel like we got you fairly.”    'It was a very thoughtful thing for you to do," Raina conceded.    Jared led her over to the sofa and waited for her to take a seat before joining her himself. He gave Raina's hand a little squeeze, much the same way Shanon had in the truck earlier, and she smiled at the similarity between the two of them.    “So, are you ready to have this discussion now?” Jared asked gently. “I think it's overdue, really, but well.. at least we're finally sitting down.” Raina nodded and he continued. “I just want to say, before we start, that it's really important that you be open and honest with me. This isn't the time to be shy or embarrassed, and the submissive in you needs to sit in the back seat. I need rational decisions based on what you want and feel, not what you think I want to hear. Do you understand?”    “Yes, of course I do,” Raina replied, nearly having to bite her lip to keep from saying Yes, Sir.   “Okay then. Let's start with the biggest question, and one we'll probably revisit when we've finished this discussion as well. What do you want from this relationship, and from me as your Dominant?”   Raina's brain froze. The query seemed so enormous and so broad, she didn't even know where to start. “I, uhm.. well I think that...” she trailed off into tense silence, afraid she had already let Jared down. He simply smiled at her.    “Here, let me help a little. When you were sick, I asked you to do some things to help yourself get better. Did you like that? What about it...”   Relief flooded Raina as the answer came to her, and she was so eager that she cut Jared off before he could continue. “This. This is exactly what I want. Which, I suppose, is what you were doing then too. You do it a lot. You prod me and get me moving toward making better decisions, and to clarify my goals. You make me think about what I'm doing and where I am and where that's going to lead me. It looks like you bossing me around and making decisions for me, I suppose, I mean Shannon seems to think it does, but it isn't. It's anything but. You woke me up and reminded me that I needed taking care of, and then you reminded me how to do that. For myself. You care for me too, but it's in a different way. It's really not what I expected, going into this. Not at all. But it's exactly what I needed, and I didn't know that before.”    She knew she had said something that pleased him by the way Jared smiled. “So would you say that is the most important thing to you?” he asked.   Raina nodded and Jared leaned again, cupping her face in his hands and kissing her deeply. He lingered for a moment after the kiss was over, that same soft smile playing at the corners of his mouth. “What?” she finally asked.    “See?” Jared said. “That has made more of an impression on you than anything else that has happened between us and it wasn't even about sex. Do you see now why I've wanted to take things a little more slowly?”    Raina could feel her cheeks flush and something fluttered in her chest. He was right, and at that moment her trust for him deepened. “I do now. I won't make that same mistake again.”    “I believe you. We do need to get to the sexy parts too,” he chuckled before giving her hand another squeeze. “But just to clarify, you want to continue having routines and expectations from me for our everyday life, not just in the bedroom?”    “Yes.”    “And was choosing your outfit tonight acceptable to you as well? I would only do that occasionally when we are going out or something similar.”   “Yes. And thank you, by the way. I didn't expect you to buy me anything when I agreed to that, but the outfit was fantastic. I felt so beautiful...”    “You looked beautiful, Princess. It was perfect for you.”    “Thank you.”    “So for starters then, let's agree at that we will have a daily routine. You text me when you are up for the day and have eaten a breakfast that I would approve of. At night, if we are not together, you will also text me when you are in for the night, and let me know that you've eaten and taken good care of yourself that day and that you're getting plenty of sleep. How does that sound?”    Not terribly different than what we were doing before this blew up again. “Okay. I'm assuming I should text you even when I am with Shannon?”    “Yes. I'd make him text me the same things if I thought I could get away with it,” Jared laughed. Raina had to chuckle. She had seen the way they warred for control sometimes, but she was also becoming more aware of Shannon's issues, as well as the way they deeply cared for each other. This was all starting to make a little more sense to her. Perhaps this type of relationship was easier for them because it kept them from being pulled in even more directions.    “Is there anything else?” Raina asked.    “Yes, there is, depending on how you feel about it, that is. I'd like to give you small tasks to perform during the day. Usually just one or two, it will depend on your schedule, of course, but small things. To remind you of your submission.” He waited for Raina to protest or question him, but when she didn't, Jared continued. “For example, I might ask you to do something simple, like order a particular item at breakfast, or wear a certain color. Just something to give you structure and remind keep me on your mind. Other times it might be something more sexual, or even something more involved.”    “Like?”    Jared grinned and Raina braced herself. “Send me a picture. Wear cuffs under your clothing. Slip away to the bathroom and masturbate.”   He delivered it with a deadpan frankness that took her back just a bit. No warning, no easing into it, suddenly they were in the middle of discussing the sexual side of their relationship again. She supposed he had warned her before they started, but the talk had started rather innocently and she had almost forgotten what brought them here to begin with. The question, however, wasn't if she was startled, but if she was willing to agree to his stipulations. “Yes. That sounds fine too, as long as you don't do anything that will get me in trouble with Emma.”    “Of course not. Now I have questions for you, and it is very important that you are honest with me from this point forward, do you understand, Raina?”    “Yes, Sir.”    “Raina...”    “Yes, Jared. I understand.” When he didn't continue but sat there and stared at her she added, “I understand!”    “So at this point, we've experimented with a few different kinds of sensations and experiences, we've added structure and goals and punishments... is there anything that we have done so far that you don't want to do again?”    Raina thought back over the war they had been engaging in, with her constantly trying to push Jared into doing more while he paced things slowly. There really hadn't been anything that had made her feel uncomfortable. “I don't think so. Well, that plug that used the last time we did that, that was awfully big, but I did get used to it so that's okay I guess.”    “Okay let's start there. Do you know what I mean by hard and soft limits, Raina?”    “Soft means I don't think I want to do them, but we can negotiate. Hard is definitely a no go.”    “Good. I've mentioned before that I was concerned we don't really seem to be finding any of your limits.”    “Well, you've been going so slow...”   “Not that slow, really. Would you say the size of that plug, that is, was that what you consider the edge of your limits? Perhaps a soft limit? Or do you think you would like to try something larger?”   Raina's eyes grew wide. “Something larger? Than that?”   “Did you enjoy that? Do you think you enjoyed it because you enjoy anal sex or because it was so large? Did the discomfort make it more or less pleasurable for you?”    “I....” Raina stopped. Not only was the clinicalness of the discussion unnerving but he was asking questions about things she honestly hadn't given a second thought to. What the hell did she like, exactly? For the first time, she began to truly understand how out of her own element she was and how much more Jared understood about this world that he was introducing her into.    “Raina, I need you to tell me these things. This is not a good time to get shy on me. You know I am into these things too, so it's not like I'm over here judging you.”   “It's not that. I guess I hadn't really considered exactly what I was into. I was sort of waiting for you to show me and we'd figure it out as we went.”    “That's not really the best way to go about things long term. There's the potential for some ugly scenes that way. And, yes, you have thought about what you're into. You knew you wanted this long before I came along and you've told me that. So think about your fantasies, think about what you saw and encountered online or in your books.” When Raina still didn't answer, Jared changed
tactics. “I thought you would feel more comfortable going through the discussion with me, but would it be easier if I gave you a checklist? I can explain anything that is on there that you don't understand.”   “Yes,” Raina sighed in relief. It was hard looking into Jared's piercing eyes and trying to lay all her fantasies bare, especially when she wasn't even sure she had the proper terms for everything. “I guess it would be nice if you made one for me.”   Jared gave a little chuckle. “I don't really need to make one, Babygirl. There are dozens of them available on the internet. Give me five minutes to pick one that looks appropriate and I'll print out and we'll get started.”    Jared stood up and gave Raina a kiss on the forehead before heading back to the small communal office space he kept in the house. Raina once again felt the need to sneak off to the bathroom to splash some cool water on her neck, and she really desperately wished she'd had a little more to drink with dinner.    “Jared,” she called out after a few moments of inner debate. “Would it be all right if I poured myself a glass of wine?”    “I think that's an excellent idea,” he called back from the other room. “Pour me one too, please, and meet me in the dining room.”

Bloom // Finale: 27
This chapter took by far the longest to write.. I knew 27 was going to be the hardest chapter because not only is it the end of the album, it’s sentimental to me for reasons.
Today, I share with you, the final chapter of Bloom.
Warnings: ANGST ANGST ANGST
Summary: Denise turns 27 today and Shannon hasn’t seen her in a while. For many reasons, he’s nervous as he walks up to her doorstep to say Happy Birthday for the first time in years..
Special Thanks: I wanna give my love and thanks to @meghan12151977. Queen, not only did I finish this series because I started it for you, I had a deep sense of self discovery writing it. As crazy as it sounds, sometimes addiction can be more than the typical.. Sometimes it can be a person.

Bloom | Read From the Top.
Shannon took a deep breath before he stepped up the stairs to her apartment. He knocked on the door, nervous about what she would think of his shaved head and new look. It was her 27th birthday and he felt like he'd be letting them both down if he didn't show up.
He knocked on the door nervously and quickly shoved his hands in his pocket. He chewed his lip as he waited and after a few seconds, he changed his mind and went down the stairs.
The door opened.
"Oh my god." He turned around and his heart sank. It wasn't her. "You're Shannon Leto right?"
"Yeah. Sorry about that by the way. I uh... I used to know a girl who lived here."
"Denise right?!"
"Yeah."
"Come in." She rushed to grab his hand and he followed her into the place. He looked around. So much had changed since he'd be gone. It was a different spot now.
The girl handed him a box. "They're letters."
"Letters?"
"Yeah. To you. I've read all of them. All the pictures-- you look so different now!"
"I'm sorry. Have we met?" He lifted an eyebrow.
"No. I just... found these. I just always imagined that she went off and found you one day. So the story could have a happy ending." She sighed. "Sadly, she disappeared a while ago. I think she may have..: well you know..." he shook his head. "Croaked."
He winced and she touched his hand. "I'm sorry."
"Thanks."
"Oh wait!" She raced to her dresser and pulled out a drumstick. "She would've wanted you to have it instead of some fan stranger you've never met." She placed it in his hand and he couldn't help but smile when he saw the little 27 carved into the bottom.
"Thank you." He left out of the apartment in a haze. How could she have left without saying good bye? Why had she never sent the letters?
He walked over to the coffee shop taking the walk he thought she would. She would smoke her wake and bake and the same ping would pang. He sat down and Leah immediately approached him. Her eyes widened and he looked up at her, the box in hand with the drumstick sticking up.
"Is it-..." he paused. "Where is she?"
"She's gone, Shannon." Leah shook her head. "She just walked out of here after rehab and..." she squeezed her fist together. "Never came back." She shook her head and he bit his lip. That didn't mean she was dead. That just meant she disappeared like they always did and didn't want to be found.
Shannon kept that thought with him all the way to the airport. She wouldn't just leave him. She'd leave clues. He read each letter through until he got to the last one. He tucked it and placed it In his Gucci sweater, his second favorite one since she still had his first.
He took his time going through LAX, so that he could digest all the letters. The many times she'd recalled missing him, how happy she'd been to hear his voice in rehab, how she was having a tough time coming to terms with sobriety but how she was doing well.
She was doing so well.
He pictured those brown eyes smiling at him all wide eyed.
Then he spotted them, just a few feet away. "Denise?" He gasped out.
"Shannon!" She squealed as she rushed across the airport and flew into his arms. He couldn't even wrap his brain around it. There she was. He thought he'd missed her but oh god, he hadn't.
"How did you know I was here?!" She giggled and he couldn't help but smile.
"I didn't. I went to your old place and the Fucking girl there said you were dead."
"Well obviously, she's crazy. Did she at least give you my letters and the drum stick?"
"Yeah." He held it up and smiled at her. "You look good."
"Thanks." She laughed, her eyes never leaving his. "You flying out?"
"Yeah... uh, Jared wants me to record some songs in Seattle for the new album."
"Is that why the haircut?"
"Nah. Just wanted something new." He laughed as she reached up and rubbed it. Her soft fingers against his head was like nirvana in the highest. He had missed her touch so much. "What about you? Where have you been?"
"Clean. Here and there. Really just exploring the world. You know, 27 now." She waved.
“OH yeah. Happy birthday, beautiful.” He quickly recited as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the single stemmed rose he had grabbed her, now all disfigured and ripped apart from the journey in his pocket. She still took it from him, removed the stem and held the simple bloomed rose in her hand. She inhaled it and smiled at him, temptingly before holding it out to him. He watched her as he leaned into the flower and inhaled deep.
“Smells like your--” He gestured her pelvic region and she laughed out loud, playfully pushing his shoulder before giving him one big smile.
"Flight 2727 last call for boarding."
"That you?" Shannon glanced down at his ticket. "
"Holy fuck, it is."
"Go."
"No, I have to get your new number or something. We can get lunch."
"Shannon." She grinned. "You know this won't be the last time I see you. When is it ever the last one?" Her eyes held so much promise that he couldn't help but seek comfort in them.
"I'm sorry for everything."
"Me too." She promised as she pulled her arms around him. He closed his eyes and sank into her touch, inhaling her scent, touching her skin.
When he opened his eyes, he felt a hand on his shoulder and he looked up to see his brother staring at him with concern. "Hey, you ready?"
Shannon blinked a few times before he refocused and stared at the headstone before him. The thorns in the roses he was holding had long since sank into his skin. Reality cut deeper.
There she was.
The love of his life.
Passed on her 27th birthday.
In real time, it’d been three years and it was still hard for him to process that he never got to say his final goodbye.
"Yeah. Let me just say goodbye." He bit his lip as he reached out to her. He sat his drumstick on the headstone, the same 27th one that he drummed with for three years with the power of her passion, her words...
"26 times to get it wrong. One time to get it right. Happy 30th birthday, Denise. We'll always
p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; color: #454545} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Helvetica Neue'; color: #454545; min-height: 14.0px}
Always be those crazy kids running wide eyed down the boulevard. 27." He sat down a single rose, stemless beside it.
“I love you. Forever.” he promised before he closed his eyes and let a single tear fall away to the ground. He’d never find another woman like her...

This Isn’t Happening- Chapter 1
Tumblr media
She was absolutely certain that Jared freaking Leto was staring at her. Then she shook her head and pinched herself because of course he wasn’t. Was he? No. That’s ridiculous. Just stop. Was he pointing in her direction? She turned her head slowly, trying to see what he was pointing towards, but there was nothing behind her but empty space. The guy he was talking to laughed and Jared lightly punched his arm. Jennifer kept walking down the path, eyes down, focusing on the packed dirt beneath her feet. The fangirl side of her brain was obviously giving her delusions.
Except now she could swear she was being followed. This part of camp was nearly deserted at this hour because there was so much going on elsewhere. Tomo was in the kitchen judging Cupcake Wars and Shannon had added an impromptu meditation session to the schedule this morning and several dozen people had jumped at the opportunity. When all of Jen’s cabin mates had announced that’s where they were headed she decided to take the opportunity for a little quiet alone time and wandered off. This place was so beautiful, just walking the paths was a meditation of sorts, especially to an introvert like her. After wandering the less traveled paths around the camp, Jen was now headed back to civilization, as it were, to meet up with her friends. Shannon’s class should be wrapping up any time now, she figured.
Except now she was sure she was being followed because she could hear footsteps close behind her. Its not that she was scared, the entire camp had this safe feeling that was palpable. But the introvert inside her was screaming that she wasn’t ready to end her solitude and silence just yet. Jen sped up her steps a bit, seeing the field of seated campers engaged in quiet meditation just over the hill.
Tumblr media
Noticing a shady spot off to the side of the field, Jen speed-walked her way over and dropped her bag and water bottle gently to the ground. As she did, she could see who was following her out of the corner of her eye. Jared. Trying to keep the butterflies in her stomach from escaping, Jen less than gracefully dropped to the ground on her knees and closed her eyes, trying to blend in with the others meditating just a few feet away. Her palms rested on her knees and she found herself slipping into the meditation easily as the sound of gentle music played nearby. She had already been so relaxed on her walk, it was easy to slip back into that contemplative state.
Only now her butterflies were acting up again and her senses were on high alert as the thought of Jared drifted through her mind. An involuntary smile graced her lips and she heard a man chuckle from in front of her. Jen took a deep breath and opened her eyes, expecting that her mind was playing tricks on her and she would see nothing. Instead, standing not three feet from her was Jared freaking Leto. She gulped.
“Interesting meditation pose,” Jared noted, taking a small step closer and keeping his voice down so as not to disturb the others. Everyone else in the field was sitting crosslegged, a few had laid back, but no one else was positioned like her. On her knees, legs spread, palms resting on her knees facing up, eyes down. The submissive pose felt natural to her, and she hadn’t realized what she’d done when she dropped to the ground earlier in an attempt to avoid interaction with her mystery stalker. Her mouth dropped open a little but no words came out. Her mind was blank. What does one to say to Jared Leto while kneeling at his feet? “I’m Jared,” he introduced himself.
You’re Jared. No shit. Jen rolled her eyes. “I know who you are,” she managed to form words. Okay butterflies, calm down! “I’m Jennifer,” and that’s all the words she could manage right now.
“Nice to meet you.” Part of her wanted to wipe the amused smirk off his face, the other part wanted to disappear into a hole in the ground and never come back. “Is that position comfortable?” Jared asked with a raised eyebrow. Jen hadn’t moved a muscle since he approached her and wasn’t certain she could gather the brain capacity necessary to do so now and speak at the same time.
“Its a fairly natural position to me, so yes,” she answered, dropping her eyes to the ground as she blushed. She took a deep breath, possibly her first since she opened her eyes to find Jared standing there, and let it out slowly.
Jared took another step closer and crouched down in front of her. Jen’s posture stiffened and her eyes darted all around. Literally ten feet away were nearly 50 meditating campers, including all her friends. How was no one else seeing this?! “Do you do a lot of meditating at home, Jennifer?” he asked, his voice nearly a whisper so their conversation wouldn’t be overheard. Her name coming out of his mouth would be seared into her brain forever.
“No, I think walking is more meditative for me,” Jen responded honestly, trying not to lose her cool at this point. Another deep breath in, “but before I broke up with my last boyfriend I used to find myself in this position a lot,” she said with a teasing lilt, much to her own astonishment. Are you flirting with Jared Leto?! The butterflies worked overtime to escape her chest now.
“Really?” Jared asked, that smirk back on his face. He leaned forward, resting his right hand to the side of her neck, his thumb almost brushing across her windpipe, and whispered in her ear, “You look good like that, Jennifer.” And then he stood up and walked away.
Jen’s brain short circuited. She was suddenly aware of a lot of movement going on around her, and jumped when a hand came down on her shoulder from behind. “Jen, I didn’t think you’d be joining us!” Heather, one of Jen’s cabin mates, said holding out a hand to help Jen to her feet. Jen took it and stood, eyes once again darting around, searching.
“Yeah, I just caught the very end,” she replied, her mind still reeling. Heather threw an arm around her.
“Lets get going, we have enough time for a dip in the pool before we go change for COM tonight. I’m so excited!” Jen grabbed up her bag and water bottle and let Heather guide her towards the pool. Maybe submerging herself in cold water would help clear her head.
A few hours later they were all dressed in their concert outfits, makeup flawless and not a hair out of place. Normally Jen wouldn’t bother with all this but she let Heather help her perfect her eyeliner and put her hair up just this once. She told herself it was just for fun and ignored the voice in her head that said she hoped Jared noticed her effort.
The concert was amazing, of course, and everyone had an amazing time singing along and dancing and screaming. Their group was far enough towards the back of the crowd that Jen was able to relax, certain that Jared couldn’t pick her out of the crowd from back here even if he was trying. Which he wasn’t, of course he wasn’t, right? She shook off the fangirl delusions in her head for the umpteenth time this weekend and lost herself to the music.
Jen was having a blast right up until they started playing The Kill, and Jared jumped off the stage and started wandering through the crowd. Jared did this at nearly every show, it wasn’t anything special, except that the way he was moving was a direct path towards Jen and her friends. Heather and the others kept dancing and signing along, completely oblivious. Jen froze, her eyes tracking his movement as he got closer and closer, parting the crowd, singing, “Come, break me down, bury me, bury me I am finished with you, you, you” as he touched outstretched hands and brushed shoulders with elated echelon throughout the audience. Jen was just trying not to panic as her heart raced and her knees went weak.
Suddenly Jared was standing right in front of her. People all around them had their hands in the air and were reaching for him and screaming, but Jen felt like everything had slowed to a crawl as her eyes met his and he definitely held her gaze.
“Look in my eyes, you're killing me, killing me,” he sang, reaching out for her hand, which was by her side as she stood there paralyzed. He squeezed her hand in his, brushing his thumb across her palm.
“All I wanted was you” Did he just wink? He fucking winked. Someone else had to have seen that, right? Jared broke eye contact and disappeared into the crowd before Jen had a chance to take a full breath. Heather grabbed Jen’s arm, pulling her attention from the god-like man making his way back to the stage.
“Oh my god, he’s so gorgeous,” Heather gushed. Jen blinked. Heather hugged her and she felt just a little more grounded.
“He really is,” Jen agreed, finally remembering how to breath and move. She watched the rest of the concert in a euphoric glow.
When it was over people scattered surprisingly quickly. Jared had a late night hike planned so some people were rushing to change before that. Others were running to get a good spot at Drum Circle with Shannon. Some were just exhausted and heading to bed so they could get a good nights sleep and do it all again tomorrow. Their group had made it nearly halfway back to the cabin when Jen realized she didn’t have her sweatshirt with her. She assured the group she’d be fine on her own and ran back to get it, hoping no one else had snatched it up in the meantime.
“Fuck,” she cursed at the empty ground around where they had been standing. Her favorite sweatshirt was nowhere to be seen.
“Everything okay?” His voice made her jump and clutch her chest. “Sorry, i didn’t mean to scare you,” Jared ran his hand down her arm in a calming gesture that had the exact opposite effect.
“I forgot my sweatshirt earlier and its gone now. Its my own damn fault, I should have been paying more attention,” Jen rushed out her explanation. “Are you...?” In the adrenaline rush of being scared by Jared and pissed about her missing sweatshirt she’d almost lost her filter and asked if he was fucking with her on purpose. She thanked ever deity available she’d found the sense to shut up mid-sentence.
Mercifully, Jared ignored her half-formed sentence. “I’ll grab you a new one from the merch booth. You’re going on the hike tonight and we can’t have you freezing the whole time,” Jared said.
“Oh, I’m not planning on going. I have two left feet, I’ll trip and wipeout before we’ve made it ten yards, and you really don't have to do that. I should keep better track of my things,” Jen responded, relieved she was starting to be able to form actual complete sentences around this man.
“I wasn’t asking if you were going, Jennifer, I was telling you,” Jared gave her an admonishing look, his voice getting quiet. “I’ll see you there in half an hour and I’ll have a sweatshirt for you.” Then he was walking back towards the stage, giving instructions to one of the techs like he hadn’t just dumbfounded her as completely as he had.
Jen turned and headed back towards her cabin, feeling like every movement was slow motion. Did Jared Leto just order her to go on the night hike with him? Who did he think he was? Right, Jen, like you’re not gonna do exactly as he says when he says it like that. That tone of voice should be 100% illegal in all 50 states. And she’s got to remember to tell him to call her Jen, no one calls her by her full name. She had just been so nervous when she’d introduced herself it slipped out. Get it together Jen. Only in your fangirl dreams are you having another conversation with Jared freaking Leto that you’ll have the chance to tell him to just call you Jen, like he’d need to keep using your name. What is happening?
At that moment Jen was exceedingly grateful for her subconscious mind because it apparently knew what was going on and had told her legs to head over to the trailhead where a few echelon were already gathering in anticipation of the hike. A staffer handed out a few flashlights, but announced there weren’t enough for everyone, so people needed to share. Jen stood off to the edge of the group. She was uncertain about doing the hike already, but in the dark without a flashlight, her anxiety increased.
Tumblr media
“Alright, everybody buddy up and lets go have some fun!” Jared’s booming voice sounded from behind her as he approached the group and she flinched, slightly startled. What was it with this man and sneaking up behind her? She turned towards him, noticing the bright blue sweatshirt in his hand, and smiled. “For you,” he said quietly, holding out the sweatshirt rolled up in his hands for her to put her arms and head into. As she slid into he he pulled the fabric down, caressing her sides, his hands resting on her hips for just a moment. Her breath caught in her throat.
“Thanks,” she managed to croak out. Once again the little bubble around them burst as the group seemed to surround them, waiting for instructions from Jared.
“We’re gonna head out this way, and I don’t know, we’ll just see where we end up, okay?” He raised his voice a bit so he could be sure everyone heard him. Jared started walking and the gaggle of echelon followed him onto the trail. “Be nice and share the flashlights. We’ll plan this better next time and have more, sorry guys.”
Jen’s brain seemed to have short circuited, and as everyone headed off she stayed routed to the spot. It had really been a long, sort of confusing day. Maybe she should just count her blessings and end it here, go get some sleep and clear her obviously deranged head. Then she felt a hand at the base of her back, nudging, and she jumped back to her senses.
“Lets all try to keep up. We don’t want to lose anyone in the woods. Keep an eye on your flashlight buddies, guys,” Jared teased, having circled back when he noticed her absence. Jared pushed Jen along the trail until her brain and feet finally connected and she started moving of her own accord. “You okay there?” Jared asked, smiling but sounding worried. Jen shook her head.
“Fine. Long day. Kind of a brain melting sort of day. And I don’t have a flashlight buddy so...” Jen started responding.
“I will be your flashlight buddy,” Jared assured her in that quiet tone again, bumping his hip against hers as they walked. “Come on, there is this great rock face a few minutes in that I’ve been dying to try and climb!” Jared spoke loudly, turning his head over his shoulder at the line of campers trailing behind them. Jared’s strides were long and he walked so fast hardly anyone could keep up. Jen was only managing out of determination not to lose the light and make a fool of herself tripping or falling in front of Jared. A few times she’d almost stumbled and threw her arms out for balance. Jared had caught her arm once or twice to steady her, each time sending a fresh jolt of excitement through her.
Jared waited a moment at the base of the rock wall he’d wanted to reach while the rest of the hikers caught up to them. The few who had managed to keep up were asking questions about camp and hiking and climbing, which he answered politely. When most everyone had caught up, Jared turned and faced the wall with a look of determination. He handed Jen the flashlight, aiming it at the wall. “Hold this right here for me,” he instructed, and she did as asked. Jared found hand holds and footholds along the wall Jen couldn’t even see and scaled to the top in no time. It was really incredible to watch. He stood at the top for a few minutes, looking up at the stars and out over the landscape, taking it all in. The whole group was in a calm, almost meditative state as they took in the beauty around them.
Tumblr media
Jared somehow managed to scurry down from the back side of the cliff face and popped up behind Jen once again as she stood craning her neck, looking at the stars. Jared wrapped his hand around hers, holding the flashlight, and lingered for several moments before taking it from her. “Its getting late, I guess we should head back, huh guys?” Jared addressed the group, shining the flashlight at his feet and gesturing for Jen to follow.
It was strange, Jen noticed, he didn’t shine the light directly in front of himself. Jared kept the light steady pointing down at his feet, casting a wide circle of light around him. It was then that Jen realized she had naturally fallen into step just behind him, to his right. He was aiming the light so that she could follow him easily. The thought made her smile widely.
Jen was exhausted, probably the whole group was. Jared didn’t set a slow pace and it was well after midnight by the time the trailhead came back into view. But everyone had had fun, getting to talk to Jared a little and watch his monkey self in action. Jen was relieved her clumsy self had managed the entire hike without any major missteps. Of course as soon as the thought went through her head, she had jinxed herself. They were close enough to camp that light was beginning to filter onto the trail, and Jared turned the flashlight off. He turned and was walking backwards, saying goodbyes to the group when Jen’s foot caught on a tree root that crossed the path and down she went. Jared threw his arms out and tried to stop her from falling, but he was too far ahead to grab her in time.
She winced and cursed, “Fuck,” loudly. She’d landed on a rock with her left hand and it was bleeding. Both knees were scraped up pretty badly. And once again, Jen found herself on her knees at Jared Leto’s feet. He knelt down to help her up, motioning away the other helpful hands of the group that had reached out for her as well.
“Are you okay?” Jared asked, helping her to her feet. She winced in pain again as her knees ached from the movement. Blood dripped from the cut on her hand. “Okay, I’m going to take you to the medical building,” Jared said a hasty goodbye to the group and ushered Jen away, holding the sleeve of her sweatshirt against the cut on her hand. “You’ve ruined your new sweatshirt already, I’ll have to get you another one” Jared commented, trying to distract her from the pain of her injuries.
“I can’t take a second sweatshirt from you, that’s just greedy,” Jen replied, trying to smile, her voice laced with pain.
“Cut hand, scraped knees, any other injuries?” Jared asked, assessing her condition as he took a set of keys out of his fanny pack and unlocked the door to a building. He held the door open for her and shut and locked it behind them.
“Pretty sure I twisted my ankle. Jarred my back a little. I’m gonna be sore in the morning, and not in a good way,” the words were out of Jen’s mouth before she thought it through and she blushed as she heard what she said.
Jared led her down the hallway and unlocked another room, flipped on the lights and stood aside letting her enter before closing and locking the door again. “Sit on the bed, Jennifer” he instructed, letting go of her and rummaging in a cabinet behind her. Jen did as instructed, wincing as he knees bent. Jared pulled a first aid kit out of the closet and set it on the nightstand, opening it up. He reached for her sweatshirt, the bottom half of her sleeve covered in blood and the rest covered in dirt, and pulled it over her head gently.
“Its Jen, actually,” she told him, starting to look around the room for something to focus on to distract from the pain. That’s when she realized they were not in a nurses office. “Where are we?”
Jared swept his hand under her knees gently turner her gently to lay along the bed, having noticed that bending the scraped flesh was hurting her. “My room. This late at night there won’t be anyone in the nurses office and I knew I had this kit in here, so...” Jared trailed off as he dabbed at the cut on her hand with a wipe from the kit. “Sorry, its gonna sting, and not in a good way,” he teased, parroting her words from before.
“This is not happening,” Jen thought out loud, causing him to smirk. “Ow!” She tried to pull her hand away but he held her wrist in an iron grip, finishing cleaning the cut. “Fuck!” she cursed again.
“You really like that word, Jen” Jared noted, wrapping a bandage around her hand.
“Sorry, its been one of those days,” she exhaled hard, wincing again.
“Don’t apologize, I like hearing that word come out of your sweet, innocent looking mouth.” Jared cracked the seal on an ice pack and placed it on her ankle before moving on to cleaning her knees. She’d ripped holes through both legs of her yoga pants. Jared rolled them up, his hands skimming along her legs as he worked. She silently thanked the universe that it was summer so she’d shaved recently. He worked in silence for a few moments because Jen couldn’t think of any decent way to respond to that. “Color?” Jared broke the silence.
“Green,” Jen had responded immediately without thinking, before realizing the exchange they’d just had. “Wait, what?”
Jared chuckled. “Just checking in. I had a feeling you’d respond correctly based on our conversation earlier today... There. All cleaned up. Here,” He handed her two Tylenol from the kit and helped her to sit up, leaning back against the headboard. “Can you have Tylenol?” he asked, handing her a water bottle. She nodded and took the pills while he put the kit away.
“Thanks,” she muttered, moving awkwardly given her pain, to stand, but he put a hand on her shoulder and stopped her.
“Stay. Rest. I’ll go crash in Shannon’s room tonight. You need to stay off that ankle. We’ll get a golf cart to take you back in the morning, which is only,” he looked at his watch, “five hours from now. So get some sleep.”
Jen sat there speechless. Does one turn down Jared Leto when he tell you to sleep in his bed? No, no way. But now what? While she was processing mentally a shiver ran through her body. It really did get cold here at night and she only now realized that she wasn’t wearing her sweatshirt anymore. She really had to start paying attention around this man. Jared, of course, was paying complete attention and noticed her shiver. He pulled the thick blanket up from the foot of the bed and tucked her in.
“Thanks,” she mumbled again, unable to think of anything else to say. Jared leaned forward and placed a quick kiss on her forehead.
“Sweet Dreams, Jen,” he said and then turned and plopped down on the couch across the room, closing his eyes and looking utterly at peace.
“I thought you were gonna go to Shannon’s room?” she asked.
“I don’t want to wake him. That man is one grumpy son of a bitch when he hasn’t slept,” Jared responded, laughing. “Besides, I’d worry about you in here all alone all night. I’m fine on the couch.”
“I didn’t mean to kick you out of your bed. Switch with me, at least,” she pleaded. Jared stood from the couch and crossed the room, towering over her as she lay in his bed.
“Are you questioning my decision, sweetheart?” He asked, that deep tone back in his voice. Jen gulped.
“No,” she replied, but it sounded more like a question.
He placed his hands on the bed on either side of her, leaning in. “No?”
Jen inhaled and damn he smelled good. How was that even possible for a man to smell that good? Her head swam and then she lost her filter again and maybe got just a little brave when she responded, “No, sir.”
Jared’s jaw ticked. “Good girl,” he told her, kissing her forehead again, lingering longer this time. He hovered above her a little longer and then tore himself away back to the couch. “Sleep now. Big day tomorrow,” he said, closing his eyes again and returning to looking like a peaceful angel reclined on the couch.

Somehow, Jen managed to close her eyes and sleep. It really had been a long, weird day.
