Sapnap was just minding his own business today, curiously prodding at some croppings of a startlingly bright orange coral when something came barreling into his chest with a solid whump that nearly knocked the breath from his gills! Sapnap yelped and jerked back, wanting to get away from the thing, but whatever it was seemed to cling to his skin like freaking glue!
He hurriedly reached down to shove it away. His eyes widened when his hands met small shoulders, and he looked down more closely, finally catching a glimpse of the thing that seemed to be trying to curl itself around his torso. It was a mer! Albeit, the strangest mer Sapnap had ever seen, but a mer nonetheless. If the remora had to venture a guess, he’d say the mer was some kind of octopus.
He was about the length of Sapnap’s arm, maybe a little bit shorter. Long, suckered tentacles took up about a third of his body-length, and what seemed to be wide, colorful sails billowed out around the little guy as he wrapped a few of his thin little octopus arms around Sapnap’s sides. Sapnap pulled a face and wriggled when the tiny suckers tickled his skin. The mer had wavy brown hair, and the most terrified expression he’d ever seen!
“Please,” the little mer gasped out, multicolored eyes heartbreakingly wide as he stared imploringly up at Sapnap. The remora’s brow furrowed as the guy seemed to choke on his words. The small mer finally managed to suck in a deep breath, and rushed on. “P-please, please, I-I–there’s something a-after me and I need, I need help–” He seemed to hear something behind him and froze, octopus arms stiffening around Sapnap’s body.
A look of resigned horror crashed over the other mer’s face, and he glanced backwards fearfully. “Oh no, oh n-nononnono no! I’m s-sorry, I’m so so so sorry, I-I’ve just killed us b-both, we-we need to go, w-we need to swim-!” He suddenly shoved against Sapnap’s chest, unsticking all of his arms at once, and tried to shoot away.
Sapnap tightened his grip around the octopus’s small shoulders, raising his eyebrows with extreme concern. “Hold on, what’s after you? I can help you, just tell me what it is, dude.” The mer only whined, thrashing wildly against Sapnap’s stronger hands.
With no answer seeming to be forthcoming from the panicked mer, the remora shifted his gaze and scanned around. He could see nothing but the reef around them and long, trailing swathes of green seagrass. There was nothing that he could see that would—Sapnap’s eyes ballooned out when he finally caught sight of the thing after the little mer. Charging straight towards them was a huge-ass fucking moray eel. How the hell had he not noticed the damn thing first!?
Sapnap’s hold on the other mer’s shoulders slackened in his surprise, and the little guy bolted off in a flash! The brush of the current as the octopus fled broke Sapnap from his shock, and he whirled around immediately, darting after the other mer.
He chased after the octopus as he twisted and wove through the reaching coral branches, only having to change course when the little mer dove through gaps smaller than what Sapnap could fit between.
Sapnap was much, much faster than the other mer, though, and quickly caught up to him and kept pace. He glanced back, and was very alarmed to see the eel rapidly gaining on the both of them despite all of the twists and turns it was being led through.
He looked down at the other mer, sucking deep, heaving breaths through his gills. If he didn't do something quick, the eel would catch up and make snacks out of the both of them!
Making a split-second decision, he quickly angled down and wrapped his arms around the smaller mer, trapping him in a hug. The mer screamed, immediately thrashing all of his limbs and trying to struggle free, but Sapnap held him tightly. He was faster, he could swim faster than the octopus mer, at least, maybe he could get them both away safely.
He glanced quickly back and nearly had a heart attack. The eel was closer than before! Sapnap could count each and every one of it’s gnashing, needle-like teeth. Every one of those thrashing incisors was the length of Sapnap’s hand.
Spurred on by the horrifying sight, Sapnap pumped his tail harder, dodging through a twisted clump of reef as he desperately scanned the surrounding sea for anything he could use to aid in their escape from the monstrous eel. All he could see was coral and sea foliage! There was nothing!
The remora was starting to feel panicked, now. The octopus mer bunched up in his arms was quivering quietly, muttering small, breathless nothings that Sapnap couldn’t hear well enough to discern, but he could make an inference, could make a good guess about what he was saying.
They were both probably about to die to the mindless, greedy gullet of the moray eel.
Sapnap just barely managed to catch a glimpse of a huge flash of yellow-green through the twisting coral that quickly gave way to a flowing swathe of seagrass, and he suddenly felt hope. He knew that shade! He knew those scales! That was Dream! Dream, his huge, goofy friend who was a lemon shark mer.
"DREAM!" Sapnap screamed out loudly, so loudly that his throat ached, but if he could get the shark’s attention, it would be worth it. Dream could fight anything! If he could just catch his larger friend’s attention, both he and the smaller mer in his arms would probably be safe. Dream could take care of the eel, no problem! It would be an easy task for his bigger friend.
Sapnap sped towards the distant shape of the large lemon shark mer peeking through the waving seagrass as fast as he could. He felt the push of the current against his tail as the eel caught up to them, could hear the rushing swoosh of the eel closing in from behind, as if the horrifying sound was being transmitted directly into his eardrums. Cold, creeping fear was spiking up through his spine.
He wasn’t going to make it.
"DREAM, PLEASE!" He screamed once more. He was losing steam. His tail was becoming harder and harder to move. He could feel himself slowing down. He was heaving in deep breaths of water, to no avail.
Hot, sharp pain suddenly flashed through his tail when dozens of needle-like teeth clamped down on his tailfin. Sapnap screeched at the sudden pain, twisting around and trying to writhe away as the eel yanked him closer. He tightened his arms around the shivering form against his chest when the little octopus mer let slip a quiet sob, all the while struggling to hold back his own agonized screaming as the moray seemed to chew his tail between it's jaws. His tailfin felt like it was being torn to shreds! Blazing agony spiked through his bones when he tried to thrash out of the moray’s hold, and he could only fight for a few seconds before the pain forced him to stop.
His tail was useless, Sapnap realized abruptly. He–he couldn’t move it without horrible pain striking through his whole body.
He was going to die.
With his tail out of commission, there wasn't much Sapnap could do but twitch uselessly through the water. He squeezed his eyes shut, silently apologizing to the little octopus mer that had begged him for help.
Suddenly, a huge rush of a current surged over Sapnap, accompanied by a visceral-sounding snarl, and then the teeth chomping painfully down on his tail were suddenly torn away!
Sapnap flinched when large hands brushed against his back, gently guiding him underbelly-first onto a rough, warm surface. Instinctively, he latched onto it, flexing his ventral-suction fin and attaching himself to whatever it was. He protectively curled his arms further around the trembling octopus mer, shielding him with his body against whatever he was sticking to.
Heavy currents tugged at his back and ravaged tail as the apparent body he was clinging to rushed and twisted around, savage hissing and snarling echoing through the water as the two large creatures fought against each other.
Sapnap peeled his eyes open and saw light, creamy green scales in front of his face. He quickly peered up, and his heart soared at the uplifting sight that greeted him.
It was Dream! Dream was fighting the eel!
Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a flash of blue-grey as his other friend George, a remora mer like himself, darted about, aiding Dream in his battle.
Sapnap's heart lurched up to his throat when the eel viciously snapped at George, but before it could do anything, Dream was in it's face, slashing webbed claws and flashing his huge, razor-sharp teeth at it's long, twisting body.
The water tugged and pulled at his body as the two huge vertebrates thrashed around each other in a deadly dance. He could taste the blood that had started drifting through the water when he breathed in, sparking worry in his chest. Was it his own blood, or George's, or maybe Dream's?
Sapnap continued to cling firmly to Dream’s belly while the shark fought, keeping his arms wrapped securely around the little octopus mer underneath his chest. He could feel the mer’s heart pounding, almost as if it were fighting to rip itself free from his ribcage.
The little mer twisted in his hold and buried his face in Sapnap's chest with a whimper, curling some of his octopus arms around Sapnap's back and sides once more in a tight, quivering hug.
Sapnap ducked his head down, pressing his face against Dream's warm scales, managing to squeeze in a sharp, strangled breath. His own heart was thrumming viciously with adrenaline, while every movement around him yanked savagely at his injured tail-fin and sent white-hot spikes of agony panging up his body. Sapnap suppressed a whimper, wishing that the fighting would be over soon.
He heard George screech angrily, and then a louder, much more terrifying snarl ripped out from Dream, rumbling beneath Sapnap throughout Dream's chest. Hot worry flooded Sapnap’s mind at the sound of George’s cry. He couldn’t tell if the other remora was alright! The only things Sapnap could see through the blood-clouded water were Dream’s belly scales in front of him and the occasional whipping flash of grey eel skin.
The moray suddenly loomed into view, lunging for Dream’s throat. The shark just barely managed to throw his arm up before the needle-like teeth were clamped around his wrist in a deathly grip. A pained shout burst from Dream's throat, and he reached up with his other hand to grapple at the eel's lithe body.
Blood billowed through the water when Dream finally managed to sink his teeth and claws deep into the moray's long, ribbon-like body. With a gruesome sounding snap-tear, Dream ripped the eel into large, bloody halves that absolutely clouded the water, obscuring Sapnap’s vision and completely clogging his nose with the metallic scent.
Relief flooded the remora's system when Dream cried out triumphantly. The large shark twisted and moved from the blood cloud, easily drifting away from the spreading redness. Dream stared at it for a moment, before he seemed to remember what he was doing.
“Sapnap!” Dream quickly turned his attention down to the small remora clinging to his belly, dropping his hands down to run his claws worriedly along Sapnap’s back, carefully checking for any injuries other than his ragged tail.
“Sap!” He heard George’s concerned screech right before the other remora crashed into Dream's side, right next to Sapnap. The other remora’s gaze immediately zeroed in on the shaking octopus pressed between Dream and Sapnap’s bodies. His eyes narrowed, but, regardless, he focused his attention on his injured friend.
"Can you swim?" Dream worriedly hovered a webbed hand next to Sapnap's tailfin, unsure of what to do.
The small mer in Sapnap's arms shied away from the sudden appearance of Dream's clawed hand with a whimper, cringing down as the shark whined in concern.
"N-no,"Sapnap hissed, pulling his gaze away from the wound. He felt green and queasy.
The shark hesitantly worried his large, sharp claws over Sapnap’s tattered fin, unwilling to touch anything in case he made it worse. The octopus mer seemed to notice the huge shark’s apprehensive concern, and hesitantly poked his head around Sapnap's arm to peer at the damage, seeming to push past his fear of Dream to look closer at the injured limb.
He sucked in a gasp when he got a full view of the wound. Sapnap's tailfin was riddled with small punctures and long, ragged tears, shredding through the delicate webbing. It looked really, really bad. There was no way the remora would be able to swim with it like that, not unless someone treated the injury.
George's eyes hovered cluelessly over the gruesome wound. "How do I…Dream, what do we do?"
The shark slowly shook his head, staring worriedly down at both remora. "I-I don't know…" Gently, he touched his webbed hands to Sapnap's back and carefully detached his friend from his belly, lifting him closer to his eye-level.
The shark's eyes briefly darted over the still-trembling octopus wrapped around Sapnap's chest, but disregarded him for now. Sapnap was the one who was more obviously hurt, and the one Dream was more worried about.
George flicked his tail, pushing off of Dream's side to rise up to Sapnap's level. The two started fussing over Sapnap's injuries, trying to figure out a possible way to help with the wounds.
The remora in question was determinedly ignoring the pain from his tail, as well as his two friends, and was instead gently nudging at the mer clinging to his body. He didn't think the little guy was injured, but it wouldn't hurt to check.
"Hey," he murmured, lightly moving his hands to the little guy's shoulders. The mer tensed. "Are you hurt?"
A small shake of the mer's head was the best answer he got.
"Do you want to move somewhere else, or something?" Sapnap faltered for a moment, holding back a whimper when George shifted a particularly painful part of his tail, then forced out another sentence. "I-it's fine if you don't, really, I just don't want you to be scared. O-or anything." He hissed again, scrunching his eyes shut for a moment to steady himself through the pain.
The smaller mer shivered at the question, hunching his shoulders underneath the remora's hands and shaking his head. He didn't want to leave the relative safety of the remora's arms. If he did, he would be in easier reach of the shark still hovering above them.
Weren't the two remora worried that the shark would taste the blood still lingering in the water and go on a murderous frenzy? Weren't they worried it would make them all into small, unfulfilling snacks?
"I don't know what else to do," George huffed, invariably drawing Sapnap's attention as he twisted to look up at Dream and the other remora. Dream gave a hopeless shrug, jostling Sapnap in his hands. "I-I don't know? I don't know. Neither do I…"
"W-we need something to wrap it with," Sapnap muttered, putting more of his focus on the octopus clinging to him. He had glanced at his tail for just a second, but that was just long enough for an overwhelming crash of nausea to wash through him.
"I'll go get some seagrass," George offered quickly, hurriedly darting down to the swathing field of seaweed and hurriedly yanking up some of the long strands. He swam back up to Dream and Sapnap just as quickly, trailing handfuls of the billowy plant behind him.
Sapnap watched the other remora, vaguely noting that George was being oddly helpful in this situation as he and Dream attempted to wrap his tail-fin with the seagrass. Normally he would be complaining and sassing Sapnap out for being dumb enough to get bit, but right now…
It was understandable, though. For George to be worried. Sapnap, himself, was starting to feel a bit woozy.
The little mer wrapped around his torso suddenly slid off of him and hesitantly drifted down to where Dream and George were struggling with binding his tail.
"H-here, I can help," the smaller mer faltered for a brief moment before moving towards Sapnap's shredded tailfin with an oddly single minded focus, warily keeping an eye on the two bigger mers, but more especially on Dream, the shark.
George gave him a suspicious side-eye but moved over regardless, letting the octopus take over wrapping the wounds.
With his smaller, less clumsy hands, the little octopus had Sapnap's tail secured and wrapped in a flash. It barely even hurt anymore, Sapnap thought. He curiously twitched the fin—Ah! A sharp bolt of fire rocketed up his spine, and he stiffened. No, it still hurt, definitely, yep, it did.
“You won’t be swimming for a long while, Sap,” George promptly informed Sapnap, tearing him from his thoughts as he helped the smaller mer tie off the last of the seagrass bandages. He turned suddenly, staring the other remora down with a stinging glare. “So that means, no swimming,” he hissed sharply, crossing his arms. Sapnap opened his mouth to retort, but was swiftly cut off by Dream.
“No buts, Sapnap,” Dream hummed firmly, drifting a bit closer to loom over his smaller friend. “Until your tail is completely healed, you’re staying on me, got it?”
Sapnap grumbled and griped for a moment before he gave in. “Fiiine,” he groaned, crossing his arms poutily. Dream and George shot each other a triumphant look, making Sapnap’s scowl deepen.
“Alright, c’mon then,” Dream hummed, reaching for Sapnap and curling his webbed hands behind his back and tail. “Where…?” He asked. Sapnap immediately knew what the shark was asking, huffing and rolling his eyes. “I think your shoulder would be good, for now at least.”
Dream nodded and gently lifted the remora to his shoulder, helping Sapnap maneuver around until he could latch onto Dream’s shoulder blade and comfortably rest his arms over his shoulder. The remora sighed, shaking his head and crossing his arms to lay his chin over them.
Dream finally turned back to George and the octopus mer, smiling warmly and reaching a webbed hand out towards the smallest mer.
"Hey, uh-"
The octopus shrieked, whipping around and ducking behind George at Dream's offered claws. Dream's grin faltered. "Oh," the shark pulled his hand back, curling his arms closer to his torso. "You're scared of me…" Dream turned his head away with a slow huff. "...Okay."
The shark mer breathed in quietly. "I was just going to thank you for helping with Sap's tail, but I guess not." He shook his head with another huff and turned to mutter something to Sapnap. George sent the octopus a disapproving glare and moved away, trailing up to get closer to Dream's shoulder to join in on the mumbled conversation.
The octopus mer felt a small pang of guilt at Dream's subdued response. He-he just reacted! He didn't mean to freak out, and he definitely didn't mean to make the shark feel bad! Especially after he went out of his way to save him!
Nervously making a decision, the small mer moved to apologize.
He drifted forward hesitantly. "N-n-no, wait," he fidgeted with his hands, almost freezing when the three bigger mers turned their gazes on him. "I-I'm sorry, I-I didn't mean to-to run. You-you're just–just really b–big."
The three of them glanced at each other for a moment, before something in the shark's face seemed to change.
"No, it's okay," the shark grinned carefully, keeping his teeth concealed behind his lips, and slowly held his hand back out. "I'm Dream."
The octopus flinched slightly at the proffered claws, then shook himself. "I'm K-Karl." He gently set one of his hands on the first claw he could reach. With a wince, he realized that his entire hand could barely cover the shark's claw tip. Karl hesitantly patted the claw once, then drew his arm back.
He turned his gaze up to his savior, Sapnap, who was lazily tugging at Dream's hair while carefully watching Karl.
"I–I, um," Karl paused, biting at his lip before shaking his head. "Thank you for saving me. I-I'm sorry you got hurt with, with the eel."
Sapnap grimaced. "It will, uh, it'll probably be okay, dude. I'll heal." The remora waved him off with a half twisted grin and released Dream's hair.
Karl chewed his lip again and nodded weightily. Despite the reassurance, guilt still pooled down around the base of his throat. It was technically his fault, but at least there weren't any hard feelings. At least the remora didn’t seem to hate him.
They all seemed pretty nice, actually. M-maybe…maybe they would let him….no, they wouldn’t, most likely. They’d be like everyone else he’d met, probably, and drive him away. Or they might try to eat him. But Sapnap had saved him. Why would he go through that sort of trouble…?
Karl vigorously shook his head, dispelling his thoughts. It wouldn’t hurt to try, right…? The worst they would probably do was turn him away. They seemed nice enough.
Karl took a deep breath and inched forward, lightly clearing his throat and sucking in another steadying breath. He hoped it wouldn’t hurt if he tried.
"Can I–can I stay with you guys?" He hesitantly asked, nervously twisting some of his tentacles together. He–he didn't want to seem ungrateful for their help and overstay his welcome, but–the trio seemed safe. Even the shark was starting to feel somewhat safe.
"I mean, I don't mind," Dream trailed, glancing at his two friends. Sapnap shot Karl a thumbs up with a grin. "I don't either, man. You can hang with us." Karl felt his heart rise.
"Wait," George held up a hand, black goggles gleaming coldly as he scanned Karl up and down. Karl's chest froze. "Why would we take him in? What good will he do us?"
Karl was petrified. He–he didn't have a good reason for them to let him stay! He–they–he didn't have anything to offer! The octopus opened his mouth to say as much, but was cut off by Sapnap.
"Geooorge come on, what's it gonna hurt?" Sapnap whined, waving his arms towards Karl. "He's small, it's not like he'll be a bother."
Karl winced at the remora's words. That was true, even the words seemed harsh. He was small. Even for an octopus mer, he was considered small.
"Hmmm…" George drawled, slowly circling around Karl's back while looking him up and down. Karl hunched his shoulders self-consciously.
"Fine, I guess." The remora finally hummed, floating to a stop by Karl's side. "But," he warned, fins flaring out. "Don't cause any problems, got it?"
Karl nodded fervently. He wouldn't. He would try not to, anyway.
George nodded once and turned back to Dream, obviously dismissing Karl. The other remora shot Karl a grin and a thumbs up, bolstering his spirits a little bit.
Slowly, he drifted after the trio, listening to their chatter. Karl sighed. At least he would be safe? Hopefully? He sucked in a slow breath, and paused. He could still taste blood in the water!
Concern piqued, he followed the steady scent and tracked it back up to the shark mer. Karl's brow furrowed. The shark! He had been fighting the eel, and he was covered in steadily bleeding bite wounds! Neither of the remora mers seemed to notice, absorbed in idle chatter as they were. He should probably say something, right? He should. He would!
"H-hey," Karl piped quietly. Dream tilted his head suddenly towards the octopus, turning his full attention to him. Karl faltered under the shark's curious gaze, but managed to shake it off and continue.
"You're bleeding too, still," he gestured sharply at Dream's wrist, where the nastiest bite was, as well as the various other bite wounds along Dream's body.
"Dream!" George scolded, twisting up to drift in front of the shark's face. The shark cringed back, already seeming to know what was coming. "Why didn't you say anything?!
Sapnap cracked a grin, watching as George started scolding Dream for being an 'idiot.' Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the octopus mer, Karl, drift a little bit closer to his perch on Dream's shoulder blade. He waved casually at the small mer, letting him know that Sapnap had seen him. The mer's face immediately brightened, and he darted up to Sapnap's level to speak with him.
Sapnap could only grin. His tail still hurt, he still felt a little nauseous, and Dream was still getting chewed out by George, but, he had met a new mer! One who wasn't completely scared of Dream. If nothing else, that was a win for today in Sapnap's book!

These aren't the best moments in his life (Surfer Dream pt 5)
I'm finally posting a fic again woooo :D
hero you go with a new part for surfer Dream au :)
Enjoy :]
TW: Safe/soft vore, unaware prey, fearplay, injury (mentioned)
It's been about 6 months since Dream went into a coma. Karl visited him three or four times a week, since he missed him very much and was very worried about him.
One of those days, Dream finally woke up from his coma, which pleased Karl and clearly Sapnap and Quackity. They were really relieved that he was able to wake up from the coma.
Due to health and safety reasons, Dream had to be hospitalized for another two months, which was fine with Karl as he was quite concerned about his roommate's condition.
During that time, Dream slowly began to be able to speak normally. It took him quite a while to do so, but with the effort, he was able to speak again without stuttering. In the end, he was allowed to leave the hospital, back home with Karl.
//
Dream walked out the door, heading towards the port. “Dream! Where are you going??" Karl asked as he quickly approached his friend. Dream let out a long breath, looking at him with a pout.
"Come on... I'm just going for a walk, you don't have to worry so much about me..." "Dream... You've been in a coma for six months, almost seven, plus two months of rehabilitation" He replied seriously while crossing his arms.
Dream let out another slightly annoyed sigh. “Karl, come on, I can't be locked up all the time. I'm just going to take a walk for three hours and come back, okay? Nothing bad will happen to me…”
Karl looked at Dream for a few seconds before sighing in defeat. "Okay, but if you haven't come back in three hours, I'm going to ask Sapnap and Quackity to find you and you won't come out for two weeks."
Dream thought about it for a moment before nodding. “Okay, deal. See you in three hours." he said before turning around and continuing on his way towards the port. Once there, he got on a small boat and headed out for a few miles into the ocean.
//
An hour passed and it seemed to Dream that he had gone far enough, so he stopped the boat. Not even five minutes passed when the sea began to move a little more violently.
‘Okay, maybe I should have listened to Karl…’ Dream stumbled backwards as a wave crashed into the boat. The sea was getting even more dangerous by seconds.
Much larger waves began to appear and crash against the boat. Dream tried to hold on to something but then, an unbelievably huge wave hit the boat, causing him to slip, hit his head on the ground and knock him unconscious.
Although before falling unconscious he could kinda see something light blue and gold, his sight eventually turning completely black.
//
Punz had only thought of taking a long swim by the sea, what he did not expect was to find a small boat being hit and pushed by the waves. With a sigh he approached the surface, sticking his head above the waves, watching the boat for a moment.
He narrowed his eyes, leaning a little closer, wanting to take a closer look. His eyes widened as they took in the only person in it.
The person was unconscious, which worried him a lot since the boy could die because of the state the sea was in.
Letting out another sigh, he picked up the boy in his hands and slowly introduced him into his mouth,swallowing him slowly and gently, since he didn't want to hurt him, or at least, less than what would have happened to him before he arrived.
Once he was sure the human was in his storage, he dove back in, swimming for the nearest shoreline.
Before he could move too far, a blue shark hybrid and a killer whale hybrid stopped him off, the shark grabbing him by the neck. “Where the fuck is Dream?! What the hell have you done to him!?” he said in a furious voice, baring his sharp teeth at her in a snarl.
Punz got nervous, who was Dream? Was he talking about the human he had found a few seconds ago? The shark grew impatient at his lack of response, tightening its grip on his neck a little more.
"Well?! Are you going to answer me!?" The other mer stepped in, trying to calm him down. "Sapnap please, calm down, you won't get anything like this..." Sapnap looked at his partner for a moment before letting out a sigh and letting go of Punz's neck. "Okay... Now, talk"
Punz looked at him a little bit nervous. “Uh.. That Dream.., has dirty blond hair and is wearing a green shirt...? Uh, if it's him... I found him unconscious so I decided to store him to keep him safe...”
Sapnap sighed at that. "Okay... I can tell you're not lying, but I don't trust you, understand?" he told him in a serious tone.
Punz nodded, flinching as a hand landed on his shoulder. “Calm down kid, he's just a little upset, it's alright, okay? Spend some time with us and you will see that he gets used to you.” Punz nodded again. "And what about you..?"
The orca gave a small giggle. "Me? don't worry about me, I do trust you, usually whale shark hybrids are really honest, besides you looked too nervous to lie, I think you're not good at that." "I guess..." The orca pulled him a little closer while drawing Sapnap's attention.
“Why don't we talk a bit on the way and get to know each other a bit?” He commented looking at both of them. Sapnap just shrugged, not really caring for the idea.
"Okay then, my name is Quackity and this is my fiancé, Sapnap." He says pointing at the shark. “My name is Punz…”

🦈 the boys are scheming
Ramble under cut!
Killer: based on the Black-tipped Reef Shark and a Thrasher Shark. His tail is long and whip like but you can’t appreciate it’s length bc it’s out of frame. He uses it to give his prey a concussion.
Horror: is a whale shark because he is a big softie, a gentle giant. I can only have so many octopi, and next to a shark of some kind that’s my second choice for him.
Dust: manta ray. My logic behind this choice works like this; hoodie = soft + covers you = blanket. Blanket + fish = stingray. Manta Rays don’t have stingers. But I gave Dust one anyway.
Dream/Molt: I was torn between a classic fish tail for him or something with tentacles. So I drew three forms for him. his designs are loosely inspired by cuttlefish and a specific killifish I’ve lost the name of.
Because Molt’s goop is tied to his role as a Guardian of Positivity of the multiverse, I was torn about whether not his mer-form should be goopy. I’m still indecisive about this.
If we went with his cuttlefish form, just like real cuttlefish he would be able change the color and texture of his body and tentacles. He can’t change the color of his bones or magic, of course.
This also one of the few AUs that you get to see the damage done to his ribcage. If only bc he doesn’t have three layers of fabric to hide it.
Regardless of the kind of mer-skele, Molt steers clear of deep open water. The scars across his ribs are a literal beacon in the dark, as his magic glows, and are just as likely to attract a predator as they are to attract curious small fish. As dusk falls, Molt hides himself away in caves and crevices in the reef or cliffs. He is a day time hunter by choice, but his brother still prefers to hunt at night.
Nightmare/Rem: i had two ideas for Rem, Octopus or Orca. Orca, because of the general importance that family plays in their social dynamic. And Octopus for classic fandom interpretation reasons.
If we are using the octopus type mer for Rem; like his brother, he can change the pattern and color of his body but not his bones or magic. Though he can change his color to almost any hue he wants, he prefers dark colors.
The dark markings on his bones may or may not be natural, and may or may not be caused by the same incident that nearly shattered his brother’s bones. :)

🐋Siren AU, Scene One:
(Warning: mentions of cannibalism, Reader being chased from their old home, possible child murder, and Reader wanting to bite everything that tries to touch them. You have been advised)
• The ocean before you spreads beyond you, vast and impending. There is no coral, no colorful fish, no seaweed. It is an unending abyss of blue, fading darker and darker the farther it is from the sunlit water above... But, you have nowhere else to go...
• You used to have a different home, a different life. Born to a school of reef mers, all colorful and elegant, you were different from birth. You were black and white, not a speck of any other color to your tail... And your tail, it wasn't built like the others', full of trailing fins and frills, but bulkier, thicker. While the other guppies made fun of you, you took care of yourself. After all, you were stronger than them. If one bit you, you whapped your tail against their head. If they scratched you, you pinned them to the sandy floor until they begged to be let up. After awhile, you were just left alone, ignored and abandoned in favor of more similar playmates...
• You hated when you found out what you were... It had been a regular day, learning what you could from an elder, playing by yourself, and keeping away from the gossipy guppies, until a hunter had burst into the coral reef. The moment they saw you, they had screeched, "I finally know what they are! A siren!" Murmurs went up, followed by an elder asking for proof... "Proof! Here is your 'proof '" they had spat and they tossed a fin, just like the one along your back, into the group. "I tore that from a siren north of our territory! It was large, a behemoth! In the same colors of that one, bone white and ink black! It wasn't just any siren, but an orca!"
• THAT set the entire school into an uproar. Shrieks and cries burbled into the water as the nearest adults lunged at you, claws aiming for your fins and eyes. You managed to duck by, swimming as fast as you could around the panicking mer. The reef flashed past you as you swam, bits of rock and coral scraping against you as you dodged reaching claws and sharp harpoons. Until finally, you slipped out into the open waters, slapped out by the tail of one of the hunters, who tried to follow you. It only took that for you to turn tail and flee, striking out into the uncharted waters...
• And here you were now, alone, bleeding, and with no skills or school to help you survive. The one thing you had that was yours was your pearl earring, long and dangling, that you had found by yourself when you were only twelve winters old... You weren't sure how it wasn't torn off in the chase, but it brought you a small comfort to keep it. With a bubble-filled sigh, you kept swimming...
• The sea stretched on, never stopping or ending. No signs of any other life were to be found, save for small squid that came up at night, fleeting and swift. It was... unnerving. It had only been a week since you left, and your wounds had started to heal. You found out, only a few hours after leaving the reef, that a harpoon had nicked your tail, leaving a jagged, painful scratch along its side. That complicated swimming, but you couldn't stop. If you stopped, it was likely something would try to eat you while you rested. You couldn't risk a shark, or dolphins, or another siren finding you. If mer would kick out one of their own, someone they had raised, all because they were a siren... Would an actual siren do worse?
• Your reprieve from these thoughts was finding a small, rocky outcrop pointing out of the endless blue. The waters here were colder, foggy and sometimes filled with chunks of white. It wasn't ideal to stop here, but you needed rest, and this was the only opportunity you had had since your escape... Still... You approach the rock carefully, and once found clear of danger, you curl into a small crack, just big enough to fit you.
• Your dreams are fitful, full of sharp claws and deadly spears and familiar voices leering at you, pouncing in for the kill-!
•With a sharp, fearful click, you wake up. Your fingers rub over your arms, as your tail curls up, trying to squeeze yourself into a smaller ball. You feel the small gills of your neck flit, until you are able to calm down from the nightmare... But just as you settle back down... You hear an eerie sound, something that reverberates through the water around you...
• Tensing up, you stay quiet, staring out into the darkness beyond the crack. The moonlight filters through the water, painting everything in alien blacks and silvers, until the noise dies out... Everything is quiet, save for the small rush of a current nearby. The world seems still, unmoving... until something shifts into the light, something large and dark, and you shrink further into the crack. It's the largest thing you've ever seen...
• Another eerie sound rings out, something between a hum and a wail, loud and fervent. You clap your hands over your ears, trying to muffle the noise. Whatever is out there moves again, until you can't see it anymore... With a small shudder, you turn your head away from the crack entrance, and drift back into slumber.
• In the morning, when you wake up, you cautiously approach the crack entrance, sensing the water near it for any vibrations. Luckily, none are there... When you gather your nerves, you slip out, careful not to aggravate the scars on your tail. There are more white chunks in the water, and there are small bits of light turning the water a jewel green. Nothing seems off... No mers, no fish...
• "So, that's where you were hiding."
• A shriek escapes you as you turn around, only to find something larger than you and the rock outcrop...
• It's large, with scars banding it's arm and chest, with old wounds lining its tail. Their teeth are sharp, and their eyes are reddish-brown, like drying blood. Talons as sharp as hooks are at the end of each of its fingers, long and deadly... And their tail... It's... It's... the same as, yours...?
• "What, never seen another siren before, kid?" it asks, in a growl-like voice. In a sharp arc, you dive back into the crack you came out of. A curse echoes around you, as the being shifts around the rock so they can gaze into the small crevice. "Kid, kid, calm down. It's just a joke."
• "..."
• "You've... never seen another siren, have you?" It- he, it sounds like a he- peers at the entrance. One of their claws scrapes at it, but it won't entirely go in. "You can come out, kid, I'm not gonna eat you," he tries. You push yourself as far back as you can go, even when you feel the rough walls scrape your harpoon wound open. A hiss escapes you, following a small stream of blood. Another sound comes from the much (much much) larger siren, like a low growl. "Are you bleeding, kid?"
• You don't answer, only squeezing yourself in further. You're uncomfortable, pressed this far back, but it's the farthest you can get from what is essentially an adult who is bigger and obviously more dangerous than the mers you knew. A billowing sigh escapes the larger creature, the water rippling around it. "Kid... if you're bleeding, it needs to be looked at. Can you please come out?"
• "... No..." You shiver, trying to will yourself to be strong. If push comes to shove, you can't go down without a fight. What are you, afraid? You survived a murder attempt! SEVERAL, murder attempts! You can face some oversized whale, right?!
• "Kid, I can't take 'no' for an answer. Now, please come out. Don't make this difficult." The creature sounds tired now, maybe a little irritated. You let out a warbling click, the most threatening one you can muster. The creature stills, and seems to back off...
• Then... something weird happens. A loud, mournful wail-click, filled with a desperate, assertive tone rocks the waters, sending a cool ripple into you... But... the song sounds nice... Soothing... You shake your head, ripping yourself free from it.
• "No! I'm not going out there! You might eat me! Or WORSE!" you yell, covering your ears. The siren outside let's out an annoyed noise, only for it to pause...
• "Why the h*ll would I eat ya, kid? And what do you mean, 'do worse'?" Then there's a loud, deafening growl, and he speaks again. "The mers... they did that to you, didn't they?" When you don't speak up, he takes that as an answer. "Of course those sons of eels would do that... Kid, look, I'm not like them. We are not like them. We don't do that. We don't scare off kids, we don't try to kill 'em, and we definitely aren't about to make you bleed. Now, I'm going to say this one more time: Please come out."
• You shiver as the water only seems to get colder the longer you stay still... But still... "I... I can't...." You can't go back out there just to be chased off again, or have to battle against a siren whose older and stronger than you, who could easily rip you apart and leave you for the sharks...
• "I'm sorry, kid. That gives me no choice..." The calm wail-click starts again, and even though you try to cover your ears, it does nothing to block it out or to stop the vibrations rocking you gently. Tears enter your eyes, and you try to beg him to stop... But the song seems to echo inside your own head, a peaceful noise offering only relief and warmth... A small whimper escapes you, only for the song to get louder, softer, until you're lying down on the rocky floor and drifting off... The song keeps going, deep and affectionate, until you feel relaxed and tired... A slow rumble halts the song, and you let out a small warble, asking for it to come back...
• " 'Kay, kid, let's see ya." Something clicks besides you, dragging you out of the dark rock and into a warm palm. You sigh contentedly, the heat from it like the warmth of a thermal vent, constant and inviting... Something turns you, until you're staring into dark, vibrant eyes. You blink sluggishly, reaching out a hand to touch it...
• "Oh cr*p, kid... they did a number on you, didn't they?" A sad noise escapes you, and the voice stops. "Don't worry, we'll fix you up... Wait..." A nudge rolls you onto your stomach. "Kid... you look... just like me..." A croon comes from above you, and you feel more warmth pressed into you. "Okay, kid... Looks like I might just have to keep ya, huh? You sure are quite the little survivor, aren't you?" When you nod sleepily, the grip shifts, until your tucked against a warm wall... "'Kay, I can't say no to that... Let's get ya back to the pod, okay, kid? I know the other pups will be happy to see you..."
• You yawn, hearing a deep chuckle. "Seems like you need a nap... Night, kid. Get some rest. I'll keep you safe..." And with the gentle heat keeping you content and sleepy, you fall asleep... "Let's just hope Creed doesn't get word of you..."

this might be strange but what about fishman!sanji? as in, Sanji is raised on Fishman Island? he escaped Germa but nearly drowns if it wasnt for a fishman who rescued the strange human and he was brought down to be nursed back to health. If Jinbei's still there then maybe he argues to look after the kid as proof of improving human-fishman relations and Sanji is very happy to be there because!! he's actually in the sea!!! he always loved the ocean and fish and swimming and surely the fishmen can help him find All Blue (they dont know how but are endeared enough to let him expllore their archives for clues)
sanji ends up being a huge difference in terms of fishman attitudes towards humans because its so hard for anyone to hate this excitable kid who genuinely thinks fishmen and mermaids are cooler than humans and is obsessed with figuring out how to cook underwater. sanji is a little hesitant with the royals due to general trauma but ends up getting close to them! closest to jinbei tho, shark dad for the win!!
i picture sanji either meeting the crew at the baratie, maybe on one of his excursions to find clues on the all blue, or maybe at sabaody, because he snuck away from the island to try to save camie and any other enslaved mermaids. or maybe something else? rest is up to your brilliant mind <3
Sanji weak and fresh out of the dungeon in the ocean drowning and is found by a fishman. The fishman knows something is terribly wrong so he takes Sanji to Fishman Island and presents Sanji to Jinbei who as a former slave would be able to help the boy more. Jinbie spends a lot of time with Sanji, studying the boy and helping him. Trying to gauge how deep the trauma runs and it's deep. Sanji is skittish, not just from fishman but mer people and others too. Even his time on land has him hiding behind Jinbei.
He tells Jinbie about his dream and Jinbei offers to introduce him to the royals and help get him access to the archives. Sanji is shaking and doing his best and when the king asks about his fear Jinbei says it's not through prejudice but trauma. Trauma from royals specifically. The king nods and grants Sanji access so Jinbei takes him and Sanji flits around the room looking, he starts getting excited after a while. He's flitting around and talking animatedly about the All Blue. Jinbei smiles very fondly at the boy in front of him.
Jinbei helps him for weeks but they find nothing so they talk to travelers and nomads and migratory fishman and merpeople. They never find out but Jinbei teaches him cooking. How they cook underwater and what they eat and the diet he as a fishman follows.
Also in line with everyone but Mihawk, Jinbei absolutely takes Sanji to Warlord meetings and gets him into some of the archives and libraries. He talks to other humans about the All Blue. Sanji is an actual delight to have at Warlord meetings. Sometimes he'll bring snacks or Fujitora will take him to the kitchen to cook something and eat and tell the boy stories. Sanji still asks everyone about the All Blue.
Sanji grows up like a fucking immaculate swimmer. He can hold his breath for ages and dive so fucking deep. He calls Jinbei dad around eleven and just keeps it going. Jinbei smiles every time his son calls him that.
When Sanji is old enough he sets out to go search for the All Blue and gets a job at Baratie to find information from other travelers. Which is how he gets into the Strawhats crew. Everything is canon until Sabaodyish when they meet Chamie who is talking to Sanji like they're old friends and Sanji mentions off handedly he grew up on Fishman Island.
And when they get there after the time skip and the royals are welcoming Sanji back and everyone is confused again. Jinbei comes by to join the Strawhat crew and he and Sanji are hugging and calling him 'dad' and Luffy is like "oh, that's why all the warlords seemed to know you. How come crocodile didn't recognize you in Alabasta?"
"Probably because I never really talked to them, sometimes I would bring snacks but mostly I was looking for clues to the All Blue." Sanji shrugs.
And then obviously Jinbei promises to meet up with them soon and of course the next time we see him is in WCI and Jinbei listens to his son about not killing his birth family. Once they're in the clear Sanji and Jinbei are sitting together and Jinbei says if they step even a millimeter out of line they are dead. Sanji nods and says they have more important things to worry about. Jinbei nods and agrees and pats his son's head.

I forgot to ask this sooner, in leviathantale how would the other's react to the reader making purring/chirping noises? kinda like how the shiver does
Oh! Well, would you look at that! hehehehehehe. Nothin' but floof with them boys. (So sorry for the wait!)
~~~
Dream: He is glad to hear you make such noises. It means you are finally comfortable enough with them to let your guard down. It reminds him of trying to get Cross to open up. He is glad you are accepting yourself. He can see the changes it makes within all the others too. The future is indeed looking brighter already.
Killer: Teases. Relentlessly the first few times it happens. “What’s this? Haha! Look at that! Aren't you just a cute little cuttlefish, ain't ya?” In reality, he is secretly pleased you are starting to trust getting familiar enough to everyone to let go. He knows he can be a bit much after all. Heh heh.
Dust: Makes him smile when he thinks no one is looking. It’s cute. It helps you’re a bit… softer than the regular crew. It’s nice to know someone like that can accept a bunch of “feral” sharks…
Horror: He knew you would come around. But it is a bit of a relief. He knows all of them are scary. Even for shark mer, they can be a bit… much. It comes with the territory and who they serve. You though? You’re different. They all know it despite Nightmare’s denial. He’s just glad you have bonded enough to finally allow your familial instincts in.
Cross: He’s starting to understand why everyone made such a big deal when he started doing it around the others. There is something gratifying about it. Like he and the others did good. It makes him feel as though he can be more open and vulnerable with you.
Nightmare: Such things never really mattered to Nightmare, at least when it concerned the others of the shiver. It simply was. Even for Cross it was an inevitability. Not that he didn’t acknowledge or was grateful for their growth, it just wasn’t a… worry. It didn’t matter if they chose to bond with him or not. He was a god. Having his brother was enough. It wasn’t. But with you… He won’t admit it, but it is greatly endearing to him. You accept what is his. Accept him. It stirs something in his soul.
…Such a strange feeling…
The young mer floated in the darkness. Lights sparkled above and below. All around him. He reached, wide eyes awed. If he could just touch-
“Danny! Wake up!” His mom’s voice roughly pulled him out of the dream.
Startled by the shout, Danny twisted out of his sleep hammock. “Ah! Wha- Umph!” His light-blue flank spasmed, knocking nick-nacks off his shelf and down onto him.
Nose wrinkled, he rubbed his sore side. Where was-
Oh right. His eyes flitted over the room. Rough stone walls, wovened sleep hammock, scatters bits of shell and seaweed. This was his room; he’d gone up for a nap. And..
That dream. He had that dream again. Every few months, since he was a fry, he dreamed of the sparkling lights. Suspended among them, so far, yet close enough to touch. Something in him reached, pulled towards the-
A pounding below interrupted his thoughts. “Danny!” His mom’s annoyed shout. “The door!”
“I’m coming!” The mer-boy finally shouted back, shaking the last fog of sleep away.
This time, Danny anticipated the knock.
“Get the door!” His dad complained. “Your friends are here!”
His friends! Danny’s eyes lit up. “Coming!”
He raced down the corridor and into the livingroom, eyes taking in the scene. His mom and dad tinkered with some gadget again, googles fixed over their eyes.
“I’m going out with Sam and Tuck.” The mer-boy said. “I’ll be back later.”
The adults waved him off casually, not even looking up. A stab of disappointment struck his heart. As always, they had eyes only for their work…
Danny shook his head, dismissing the feeling. He opened the door, “Hey guys.” And swam through.
“Tell us if ya see any wind spirits!” His dad yelled, as the door closed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So, where are we going?” Danny’s friend, a purple-tailed mer-girl named Sam asked.
“To the trench.” The boy grinned, eyes sparkling. “You guys have to see it!” Swimming fast, he pulled his friends along beside him. “If you look out over, just after the Dimming, when it gets dark, there’s all these tiny blinking lights. Like thousands of them!”
“The trench?” Tucker, a yellow-tailed mer-boy with his customary hat of woven, red seaweed, squeaked. “You mean the one where if you swim too deep the weight of the water on top of you alone will kill you?” He raised a brow. “Haven’t there been, like, rabid shark sightings near there?”
“Those are just rumors, Tuck.” Danny shook his head. “And it’s not like we’re going to swim down in the trench. We’ll just watch from the top.” He dipped down, swimming through a gap between two rocks.
The three swam for several minutes more, the blue-tailed mer eventually pulling to a stop just at the edge of the ravine. “See!” He waved excitedly. “I mean, there are no lights yet but give it a few minutes.”
The mer-boy drifted down, settling on the cluster of boulders above the trench. His friends swam over, sharing fondly amused grins at his excitement. Sam took a seat to one of his sides, her dark hair swirling around her head.
“So they’re like the lights in the above world from the stories. The floating ones, up really high?” She asked.
“Stars.” Danny nodded, awe entering his voice. “They’re called stars.”
Tucker joined the group on Danny’s other side. He blinked, disbelieving. “How'd you know that?”
The blue-flaked mer’s eyes drifted to the open water in front of them, gaze far away. His mind drifted…..
A busy market square. A tiny mer crying for his mother. A cloaked man, a scar over one red eye.
“It will be alright, little one.” A soothing, melodic Voice came from the merman.
Wide eyes traced the painted lines and dots on the stranger’s blue skin. “What’s that?”
“It is a map of the stars.” The stranger smiled kindly.
“Stars?”
Blue fingers followed the silver and gold marks. “The floating lights in the world above. In the world of air and light.” They seemed to shimmer, almost glowing. “They are called stars, child.”
Danny blinked, drawing himself out of the memory. “Someone told me once, when I was little.”
“My grandma told me she went up there, when she was our age.” Sam leaned forward, purple-eyes sparkling conspiratorially.
“How didn’t she die?” Tucker gaped. “You dry up and suffocate if you go to the surface! That's what my mom always says.”
The purple-eyes mer waved him off. “You only really start drying out after twenty minutes, and it takes at least an hour to suffocate.”
“Only an hour?” The yellow-tailed mer scoffed sarcastically. “That’s plenty of time.”
“Exactly.” The purple-tail raised an eyebrow pointedly.
This earned another scoff from Tucker and the two started squibbling.
“Bub says the far lights are giant balls of gas, burning billions of miles away.” Sam argued.
“That’s ridiculous.” Tucker countered. “They’re obviously glowing plankton in the ocean above.”
“What?” The mer-girl’s mouth dropped open, eyes narrowed skeptically.
The yellow-tailed mer motioned, one hand palm down and parallel to his chest. “There’s this ocean, the water below.”The other hand stacked on top of the first.  “The air.” The stack grew, his left hand added above the ‘air’ layer. “And then the other ocean, the water above.” It was as if the parts of the world were rock strata in a cliff-face, one piled atop the other. “Except it’s upside-down so we’re looking at the plankton floating near the surface.”
“You clearly just made that up, Tucker. Everyone knows that….”
The two argued lightly and Danny smiled, just enjoying the banter. It wouldn’t be a hangout section with his friends unless Sam and Tucker gave each other a hard time. And really, they were great for letting him drag them out here. It was quite a swim, and one his parents would not be happy about him making, but it would be well worth it when the lights came out. It wasn’t the stars but it was as close as he could hope to get. And-
“Danny! Look out!” Sam shouted.
The boy jerked up, but not in time. Something gray and rough slammed into him. Sharp teeth flashed in his vision.
“Rabid shark!” Tucker cried.
Heart pounding, Danny flailed. Jaws snapped, eerily close to his tail. Frantically, the mer jabbed. “Take that!” His finger met the creature’s eye. “Gross!”
The shark jerked away, bits of gore drifting out its wound. But… madness linger in its remaining eye. The creature rushed back.
“Sam! Tuck!” Danny screamed, floating over the ravine.
He sprinted away, diving down. Frantic words, shouts sounded. The mer boy couldn’t process. Just flashes of his friends' panicked faces high above, where he had left them. Above?.... He hadn’t meant to swim this far down, below the cliff face.
“Guys! Help me!” He yelled, eyeing the shark still focused on its prey.
Above him, the groaning reverb of rocks shifted. The creature lashed out, inches from his caudal fin. Danny dodged but-
“Ah!” Too slow. Teeth sunk into flesh.
“Now!” Sam shouted.
Immediately came a heavy boom. Danny turned to look, eyes widening. Oh no. A torrent of rocks fell. One slammed into his attacker, releasing him from its hold.
“Danny!” “No!” Sam and Tucker reached towards him. But-
A wordless scream, as the boulder impacted. His bloody flank spasmed uselessly and he spun, head over tail.
The worlds spun, light above and dark below flashing. His friends’ screams…. He couldn’t understand. His breath heaved, heart pounding in his ears.
Deeper and deeper. Darker and darker. Danny spun, mind in chaos. Then-
Glowing lights sparked into existence.
Eyes widened, his heart slowed. The lights all around him… they were so beautiful.
A tiny fish, lines of glowing green flickering on its side, darted towards him and nibbled at his fingers. Danny flicked it off with a feeble chuckle.. And… his breath choked.
His tail throbbed. Weakly, he tried to flex it, tried to kick but… the limb screamed, pain radiating down. He gasped. It must be broken. He couldn’t swim.
The realization should have caused panic, especially with the blood leaking from the wound, drifting up, just visible in the blinking light. But-
The blinking light…. Two pale white jellyfish undulated past, tentacles as long as he was tall drifting behind. An octopus, orange and pink small enough to fit in his hand, darted around; glowing spots dotted its skin. Masses of green plankton gently floated.
Danny sank deeper, his mind growing fuzzy and indistinct. The water pressed down on him, heavier and heavier. His tail ached, sensation dimming as his gills fluttered, straining to take in water.
A colossal fish, long and eel-like with glowing blue dots lining its sides; a glowing spot hovered above its eyes. Miniscule jellyfish flashed different colors.
Danny’s vision faded, growing black around the edges.
A clear oval luminesced, edges red. Fanning, branching, fluttering clumps, like the coral that rooted on the rocks near home, and yet it drifted in the open water. Lines of tiny blue squares, stretching as far as the eye could see. So many creatures floated around, beings he never could dream of.
Floating on his back, surrounded by the ethereal glow, Danny reached up, towards the surface, towards his friends.
Light shone above him, coalescing. White-blue. Golden yellow. Fanning, branching, spread-wide. Expansive but near.
Something soft and light gently brushed his face. The boy reached back, the luminescence a hair’s breadth from his finger.
Just like his dream.
A whisper into his mind. Almost a Voice. It was like a song, chiming and sweeping. Light and ringing. Immaterial, ethereal. Like nothing he’d ever heard before.
Danny’s heart pumped, slow and heavy. His gills struggled. One more breath.
His watery mind barely grasped for understanding but… slipped.
He was dying.
The Voice’s words whispered soft, tender, kind. It was… a desire to save, to rescue. A plea to accept the offer. It just required a small sacrifice, something surrendered….
The mer-boy’s throat barely twitched. He couldn’t think. Couldn’t speak. Eyes fluttered, closing. One last moment. One last glimpse.
Against the pale blue, glowing white lines and dots made a familiar pattern. But he couldn’t quite remem…
Heart stopping, Danny exhaled.
I want to live.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny gasped, twitching eyes darting around, unseeing.
His mind raced. What? How? He wasn’t dead-
“Danny! You’re awake!” His mom’s voice, quivering.
The boy flinched at the sound. Too loud, too close. His head hurt.
“Son!” Large arms swept him up. “It’s alright. You’re alright. The wind spirits didn’t get ya!”
The mer squeaked, body pressed on every side. For a moment he was back in the ravine. The water crushed him. He couldn’t breathe.
Gasping again, Danny jerked out of the hold. He fell back, onto something soft and springy. He blinked, eyes struggling to focus. And…
His parents' faces, hovering just over him and frantic, snapped into view. His parents? But-
The memories hit. The glowing lights. The ravine. The shark. His friends…. His friends?!
“Sam and Tucker!” The mer-boy shouted. “Where are Sam and Tucker? Are they okay?”
“Are they okay?!” His mom’s eyes snapped wide, almost bulging. “You almost died, Danny. You could have died! You’re not allowed to go to the ravine anymore. If your friends hadn’t found you…” Her voice broke, sobbing.
The woman threw her arms around him and his dad joined, burying the boy in his parents’ arms. This time, Danny didn’t resist. He accepted the hug, though didn’t return it. For just a moment, a bitter hurt flashed through him. Oh, of course, they were worried now. After brushing him off this afternoon like always.
He huffed, eyes drifting over the…floor? He had been laying on the floor. A pile of woven seaweed blankets and pillows, stuffed with sea sponges, sat below him. Eyes flitted a few feet. His mom’s shell-decorated seat. Fish-bones needles, for one of Dad’s projects. This was his house. But…
Frantic words and questions bombarded him. But Danny ignored them, mind swimming.
How did he get here? Why wasn’t he dead? Where were his friends?!
A sudden knock came from his left.
“Is Danny awake-” Sam’s voice. “Danny?!”
His parents let go and a blink later, his friends were hugging him. This time, he returned the hug.
His heart fluttered, trembling. Finally, his own sob came. “You… you guys are okay.”
“Of course we’re okay. You… you dork.” Sam squeezed him harder.
“Don’t scare us like that!” Tucker cried into his shoulder. “We thought you were dead!”
His parents’ both rose from the floor, whipping their faces. An awkward pause, the adults’ eyes on his back while he broke down.
“You must be hungry.” His mom finally said. “Jack, come help me.”
The pair left, blessedly leaving the trio in peace. And Danny hugged his best friends, crying with them for a long while. Then…
A confused question broke through the supreme relief. “Guys! What happened!?” Danny pulled away. “That shark attacked us! It freaking bit me. I got knocked into the ravine.”
“We saw you fall. You disappeared!” Tucker waved his arms. “We were calling your name but we couldn’t see you. Sam was about to go after you but...” He bit his lip, trailing off.
“Yeah.” Danny didn’t quite register the hesitation, sitting up more fully. “I tried to swim back but couldn’t. I broke something in my… tail.”
The blue-tailed mer’s eyes drifted to his flank, widening. With a thought, the tip flicked, as natural and easy as ever. “Guys… my tail isn’t broken. But… I know… I know it was. I couldn’t even move it without screaming. This is crazy...”
He stared, flexing his dorsal fin. Moving it side to side, up and down, mesmerized by the movement.
“That’s not the only crazy thing…” The yellow-tailed mer hesitated..
Danny looked up at the words, wide eyes flitting between his two friends. “What?”
The two traded hesitant looks. Finally Sam started. “Something… really weird happened after you went over the ravine. I was just about to go after you, when these lights showed up. At first we thought it was the glowing lights you’d brought us there to see. But then they were getting closer and closer. And brighter and brighter and… there was this sound.” Her eyes widened, far away. “It started small. But it kept getting louder and suddenly it was everywhere like.. Like it was inside my head….”
Beside her, Tucker shivered. “I heard it too. Nothing…  I’ve never heard anything make a sound like that before. Never. But… it was like this singing but… high and far away but somehow also really close and…”
The hair on Danny’s arms rose, something distant but so near tickling at his mind. The darkwater, bright light, a musical Voice.
“The light kept getting brighter, like it was gonna burn my eyes. It should… should have hurt but… it didn’t. I couldn’t look away.” Tucker breathed, almost dreamily. “It was so beautiful.”
Danny’s stomach dropped, a strangely calm dread. He waved a hand in front of his friend’s face. “What happened next?”
The other boy shook his head, snapping out of it. “There was this flash and you were back. You were just laying there, at the edge of the cliff. But… but.” Tucker’s voice trembled. “There was seafoam everywhere. All over you.”
“Sea… sea foam?” The dread rose, wrapping around Danny’s throat. “Seafoam? Like…”
Numbly, Sam nodded. “Your tail… it looked half gone. And your hands…” She shook. “You were dead. We were sure you were dead and.. And…”
Danny’s mouth was somehow dry. “Turning into seafoam.” He’d been dying. Sinking into the depths, the glowing creatures drifting around him… He’d been dying. He had felt it and…  “I… I was turning into seafoam.” Like any other mer, returning to the foam all their kind had come from.
But… but that was impossible, Because… “I’m.. I’m not dead, though?” He asked, anxious, hopeful, desperate.
Sam nodded, eyes glazed, almost haunted. “Your eyes popped open and… they were glowing. Solid white.”
“Your whole body started glowing too. Like light was coming through your skin.” Tucker added, nervously chewing at a fingernail.
Danny stared at his own hand. This was.. This was all impossible. But… the image flashed in his head…. his veins, pulsing with light from within. Why… why did it feel so right?
“It kept getting brighter and brighter until we couldn’t see you at all.” His red-capped friend continued. “Then there was this whooshing noise, like a million manta rays flapping by, and you were normal again.”
“But there were all these white things around you. They looked like that red-coral at the reef, the branching wavy ones. But not hard at all. They were soft and smooth.” Sam’s brow furrowed. “They disappeared though. They were all gone by the time I came back with your parents….”
The purple-tailed mer trailed off, a heaviness falling over the room.
Tucker wrapped his arms around himself. “It was freaky, man.”
Part of Danny wanted to laugh- talk about an understatement. But… in his chest, his heart pounded fearfully. He’d almost died, he remembered that. But what had happened to him after?
And yet… again, it scratched at his mind. Light coalescing above him. Immense, reaching softness. A ringing, tender almost-Voice. His heart skipped a beat.
Something had saved him.
Before Danny could open his mouth to tell his friends, his parents burst in.
“Here you go!” His dad shoved a plate into his hands. “Manatee cheese and mussels. Your favorite!”
Again, a hint of bitterness rose. Apparently he just had to almost die for his parents to pay attention to him. Danny shook the thought away; it was his favorite meal…
His mom joined. “Sam, Tucker. Here’s some for you too.” She handed plates over and the five sat in a circle on the floor.
The blue-tailed mer ate the food, though he didn’t enjoy it. Not with his stomach churning as it was with the adults hovering over him.
“You’re lucky to be alive, Danny.” His mom’s sad serious eyes fixed on him. “You know you can’t go to the ravine like that. It’s dangerous.”
“Yeah!” His dad stabbed his seaweed salad violently. “Those windy spirits haunt those cliffs. They lure you with their weird songs and spooky ghost lights.” His voice lowered, slow and ominous. “You get closer and closer. You can’t look away and…”
Out of the corner of his eye, Danny saw Tucker’s widened, fearful.
“They blind you!” His dad shouted, fingers jerking like a flashing ball of light. “Then they drag you to the surface and suck out your soul!”
Both Danny’s friends gasped, faces pale. They traded knowing looks, side-eyeing him.
“Don’t scare the kids, Jack!” Mom reprimanded. “No spirit is going to touch my baby.”
“Sorry, Mads.” The other adult rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.
Meanwhile, one of Sam’s eyebrows rose, a pointed though subdued question.
Subtly, the boy shook his head. And though both friends frowned, neither said anything
“You’re fine, Danny.” Luckily, his mom mis-read the exchange. “What happened was scary but it’s over.“ The woman placed a hand on his arm, an attempt at comfort. “You’re safe.”
The boy smiled, though the warmth of it didn’t meet his eyes. “I know. Thanks Mom.”
The group finished eating soon enough and the adults rushed Danny’s friends out. The trio shared a hug, again questioning looks pinned on the blue-tail. And again, Danny refused. As weird and worrying as what happened to him was, that was not a jar of slugs he was willing to open in front of his parents.
“We’ll talk later.” The mer-boy instead whispered into Sam’s shoulder.
With subtle, understanding nods and parting waving, both teens left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny quickly excused himself to his room. As soon as he crossed the threshold, door closed, he let out a groan.
“Why?” He rubbed his eyes.
So much had happened, he couldn’t even begin to process. And of course, his dad had to bring up wind spirits again. It was ridiculous. Everyone knew spirits weren’t real. But…
The sweeping song danced in his head. The feeling of light on his skin, not searing or burning, but… warm and safe.
Danny twitched suddenly. His back itched, something brushing his skin. He reached under his shirt, reaching for the spot. His fingers brushed the thing, soft like hair but… not. He gripped; whatever it was, the end was hard but light, tapering into a long, thin point. It came away without resistance. He brought it in front of his face.
The boy gasped, eyes wide and mesmerized. The white object glowed, warm in his hand and pulsing with light. It tingled, the warmth spreading down into his palm. Something sparked in his veins. A flicker, a glow. Blue-white light shimmered through his skin.
With a choked cry, Danny dropped the feather as if he’d been burned. The light disappeared as soon as it left his hand, his own veins going dark. The object fell softly to the floor.
For a long moment, the boy held his breath, just staring. He swam back, slowly leaning closer, eyes fixed. Nothing. No spark, no hit of light. Tentatively, he poked the object. No reaction came.
“That’s dumb.” Danny complained, frowning at it. “ ‘s just a feather.”
The word passed his lips and the realization hit him like those falling rocks. It was called a feather. Usually part of a wing and used for flight. This thing that had somehow been in his shirt, that his friends must have seen around him when he… appeared back at the top of the ravine. It was a feather and…
His heart pounded, breath choked. He hadn’t known what this was this morning. He’d never seen a feather, nor a wing, nor flight. No one told him what they were. But… those words were there, in his head, as easy as any other. As familiar as his scales, his tail, the idea of swimming.
This was a feather. And not just any feather. It was his own.
Panicked, Danny shoved the object away. He stuffed it in the bottom of his chest, under old clothes and blankets. Out of sight. If he couldn’t see it, then it wasn’t there. It wasn’t real.
The boy paced. None of this was real. It couldn’t be. It wasn’t. He just… he just needed to go to sleep. He would go to sleep and this nightmare would be over. No more feathers. No more glowing. No more eerie wind spirits. Which saved his life! He’d be dead if it hadn’t-
No. With a frantic head shake, Danny practically leapt onto his hammock. He crawled in, tossing and turning until an uneasy sleep took him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Great feathered wings stretched over Danny, filling his vision. They reached towards him and he reached back.
Swirling light and water. The feathers encircled him. The tender Voice sang. A lullaby. Safety, closeness, love.
Danny trilled back, high and melodic. Something in his chest vibrated. His back twitched, feathers brushing each other. He shone.
Movement. The pressure around him lessened. They were soaring, streaming up and-
A splash, tiny bubbles parted. Danny squeaked fearfully.
The Voice hummed and comfort filled the boy’s veins.
Higher. Blue surrounded, paler than he’d ever seen. And… light. Yellow and shining, all consuming.
Awe swelled in his heart. Danny stared at the sun.
The mer-boy woke with a gasp. His tail twitched, an ache deep in the muscle. His back itched; something invisible, immaterial fluttered, dragging in the water.
Danny opened his eyes and the feeling disappeared. For a flash, his heart throbbed, aching with its absence. Then he shook the sensation away. But his body still felt odd, too heavy and too light at the same time. His gills fluttered, taking in water. He breathed, the familiar movement foreign.
What was wrong with him?
The boy dragged his head up, rubbing his eyes. This was crazy. He was going crazy.
Something green flickered in the dark. His eyes jerked to the object, widening. He reached for it.
Fingers gripped the corner. A piece of green sea-weed parchment, familiar with its squid-ink dye. And yet… it glowed. His eyes flitted over the words.
Beloved child of my wings. I am pleased to know you are well. Not a day has passed and yet I long to see you, precious one. Meet me where the lower water mets the air and we will fly together under the stars. Love, your Abba.
Danny read it one, twice, three times. Slowly bringing it to his chest, the boy’s heart pounded. Joy and terror mixed in equal parts.
Safety, the feeling of being wrapped in protective wings, haunted him. His dream…. It had felt so real. And… feathered wings. That was what he’d seen above him as he died. An awesome, immense being with wings.
And this letter…. The honey sweet words soothed him. His own parents hadn’t talked about him with such affection in years. The promise of the stars, always calling to him from his dreams, lured him; he could see them, really see them.
But the intimacy, the familiarity there, from something he did not know….
What, or who, exactly had saved him?
My contribution for mermay! Sapnap and George, who are a pair of remora!
Remora are a type of fish that usually hang with bigger sea creatures, like whales, dolphins, and sharks. (Interestingly enough, what the species of remora is usually dictates what kind of creature they hang with.)
They can stick to the bigger fish with a specialized dorsal fin on the top of their heads that acts like a suction cup that they can control at will! (And yeah, the scale-looking things on Sap and Gogy's bellies is that fin. I just thought it would be weird if it was on their backs, so I put it on their front.)
Remora have a symbiotic relationship with whatever fish they cling to. They clean off any harmful parasites on the other fish's body, and in turn they get protection, faster transportation, and scraps of food.
Now comes Dream!
Tumblr media
Dream is a lemon shark!
Now, among sharks, lemon sharks are the more likely to eat the helpful remora, but that's irrelevant here. (They're also one of the more agressive breeds of shark, which is kinda relevant.) In real life, most sharks actually seem to like remora, cause they help them get rid of itchy parasites, but that's also irrelevant here.
Here, in this world, shark mers are more prideful, more sure that they can take care of themselves. So, they don't really like remora clinging to them, and it's really uncommon to see a shark mer with any remora. (Others, like dolphins and whales, don't really mind the little guys.) So, to the crueler sharks, remora mers are as much of a viable food option as any other sea creature.
Also, lemon sharks are kinda in the mid-range for shark size, but in this one Dream is kinda on the small side. He's not complaining though. It just means he can be more down-to-level with George and Sapnap. When there's a bigger shark around though...well, let's just say that Dream's had his fair share of not-in-his-favor fights to protect his two smaller friends.
I think that's all I have to say, for now, I suppose.
Even though it was just a dream, Kuroko can't deny the care he feels towards his tiger shark companion and promises to himself he'll always stay the other's shadow. (And it looks like another little mer was awake spotting this little display and...isn't sure how he feels about what he saw.)
(Wonder what the little shark could be thinking? Only Aomine knows!)
((Thank you for everyone’s patience as I finished the second half of this comic! Just a couple of pics I have planned then back onto my animation!))
whirlpool by pinchingzuku
Summary: He still didn’t know how he, a mer, ended up being friendly with a human of all things. It still made his brain spin and his fins flicker in annoyance, maybe less than he would have liked, but still.
And definitely didn't expect to see him again, and again, and again.
The sound of the waves by Ana_Writes
Summary: Love is beautiful, everyone knows that. Everyone sees it differently. For some it's the feeling, for others it's the person.
For Izuku? For Izuku it's the sound of the waves.
Being in love with a merman isn't normal or easy but Izuku knows he'll do anything to see Katsuki's face, feel his scales on his skin and hear the soft hum of the waves.
tides by kindaopps
Summary: A new lease of life, then, for this poor boy.
A whim, nothing more. Katsuki’s good deed of the day. It’d be a waste, to let the life he’d saved slip away in a blink of an eye.
Katsuki ignores the treacherous voice inside him that tells him that his whim had something to do with the dream-like, nebulous future that Katsuki saw in glimpses.
Sharks and ocean predators by @silverynight
Summary: He's ready to dive in, when he sees a very weird black and dark orange fin, it looks like a shark's. He knows sharks are not usually aggressive, but he doesn't want to upset it, so he decides to stay on the boat for a while, hoping it doesn't see anything interesting and decides to go away.
However, the shark doesn't go, instead it bumps into Izuku's small boat a couple of times until the green haired boy falls into the water.
Izuku closes his mouth and opens his eyes to see the creature and realizes that's not a shark but a merman; he's never seen one like him before. Uraraka's fin is completely different from his; from the waist down he looks like a black shark and the rest of him looks like a blond boy with red eyes, sharp teeth and well built body.
mer-made in heaven by Fangirl_on_fire
Summary: Over the next few weeks, Izuku kept returning to the cove. He brought a few gifts for Katsuki—slices of dried kelp, a pretty shell, things he had figured out mermaids often liked from his studies at the laboratory—but Katsuki never reacted beyond a slightly interested lift of his eyebrows. Still, Izuku was lucky just to have the attention of the most gorgeous person he had ever seen, mer or human.
As if it weren’t enough that Katsuki was devastatingly handsome, he was cute, too, with the way he scrunched his nose up when the sunlight hit his eyes or he idly splashed his tail in the water.
{One Shot}
Tidal Wave by LoonyLoomy
Summary: When a young Izuku goes to the beach one day to find a boy with a lionfish tail, he's immediately enchanted. Katsuki is the coolest friend: confident, talented and bursting with amazing stories about life underwater. Little do the boys realise, however, that a mistake can change everything in the blink of an eye.
I just saw the little mermaid and holy fuck, holy shit, oh my fucking God it was so fucking good!!!! Minor spoilers I guess.
The performances were amazing!!!! Halle Bailey especially! The emotion in those songs!!
They made Eric much more likable. And the romance felt much more naturally developed, I love the parallels of their collections and interests!
The designs of the mermaids were so cool, I loved how their "cloths" were really just part of their natural scales! I also like how the mermaids were cleaning up the reef after the shipwreck. King Triton's crown was shark teeth, his armor was shells! I also noticed his tail went side to side instead of up and down sometimes, which I thought was a cool detail, no one else seemed to do that though.
The ocean, oh the ocean was beautiful, stunning, enthralling, awe inspiring, magnificent. I could talk about the details all day, yet I'm sure I could spot new ones each time. There were brittle stars for heavens sake, they had mouths, she was sitting on brain coral, the sea weed, and the particles in the water, and the depth, one of Sebastian's claws was bigger than the other. I expect very few people actually noticed these details but they mean so much to me. It's clear that the vfx team cared so much and it shows! I saw! I saw it! I could tell! I started crying during that first underwater scene, because I have dreamed of the sea as much as Ariel has dreamed of land and they brought me there! I was there!
The diversity and setting was also amazing, I loved the scene in the town.
I also loved the last scene with all the mer people and humans saw them off together.
So...yeah. I loved it, I want all the sequels and prequels and everything. Go watch it. I would see it in 3D if you can it's so beautiful.
In your surfer mer au where George is lowkey more feral what does he hunt to eat? And is he hunted by anything
before living w dream in his tub his diet was mostly just fish, he does eat a LOT though since he's big and swimming around takes up a lot of energy. He also eats seaweed or kelp sometimes too but usually sticks to fish
for predators he'd probably just have bigger sharks or killer whales but he doesn't encounter them much the biggest threat WOULD be people / hunters and thats why dream is taking him to his home to be safe :3
