Facts of the Day: 🦈 Great White Sharks 🦈
Scientific Name: Carcharodon carcharias
Length: 11 to 16 feet in length, the largest on record being 20 feet long
Weight: 1,500 lbs to 2,400 lbs, the largest on record being 4,400 lbs
Lifespan: Estimated between 30 to 70 years old
Reproduction: They give birth to live young with their litters being between 2 to 14 pups
Diet: Fish, invertebrates, and marine mammals with a liking towards seals and sea lions
Habitat: Temperate subtropical, and tropical waters worldwide
Status: Vulnerable
Summary: Great White Sharks are formidable apex predators for a reason. They were the Megalodons competition and won that battle of evolution to become one of the most striking and notable predators of the ocean. They’re strong, fast, and can even breach out of the water to strike their prey from below. Each shark has their own personality but Great White Sharks are notably intelligent and highly curious. These sharks are super predators, and they’ve earned that name for a reason. While you shouldn’t go diving with Great White Sharks, they tend to be indifferent towards divers, and while attacks have occurred, they tend to be nonfatal curiosity bites. Most of the danger this shark poses to humans is solely based on its size and how much damage these curiosity bites can do.

Facts of the Day: 🦈Whale Sharks🦈
Scientific Name: Rhincodon typus
Length: Between 18 feet and 45 feet, largest on record was 61 feet long
Weight: 40 tons on average
Lifespan: 80 to 130 years old
Reproduction: They are ovoviviparous and give birth to live young
Diet: Small shrimp, fish and plankton
Habitat: Tropical and warm temperate seas worldwide except for the Mediterranean
Status: Endangered
Summary: These sharks are gentle giants both due to their… well, gentle nature, but also because they are the largest fish in the world! Whale sharks are filter feeders, passing more than 6,000 liters of water through their gills every hour, and despite having a mouth 4 feet wide, they can only eat small shrimp, fish and plankton due to their tiny teeth. These sharks are also known to be highly migratory, traveling all over the world to different feeding grounds. Trackers have followed sharks over 8,000 miles of distance before but they’re expected to be able to travel even greater lengths even though their swimming speed is just 3 miles per hour! However, due to their slow climb to maturity, reaching adulthood at 30 years old, and their inability to be kept in captivity safely, these species are critically endangered because of overfishing.
