In this video the lemon shark your watching swam over to me, stopped swimming, raised up on its pectoral fins and opened its mouth wide, in order to let the remora's clean her teeth and get some love from me! This lemon shark's name is Darcy and we have been giving it love and affection for roughly 7 years. After it stopped swimming, I set up one of my cameras with lights, in front of it and then proceeded to give it love and affection! Darcy loves this and is completely relaxed in my presence, as well as many of my guests, as you can see! Darcy routinely looks back at me with her eyes, I believe because of the enjoyment they are receiving! These same lemon sharks that are seeking affection will routinely find their new human friends and stop swimming in front of them, in order to get more love and affection! Image by @Jim_abernethy // Yesterday, Pia Ramirez from @rangoextendido gave her new lemon shark friend "Star" some Love and Affection! For almost 8 years now I've been teaching my guests how to make friends with sharks using love and affection like you see here! Once the sharks have had Love and Affection they seek out their new human friend out in order to get more! Having my guests helping me get the sharks to trust us greatly accelerates the rate at which I'm able to remove their hooks! I discovered the affectionate side of sharks 20 years ago in 2002 while successfully trying to remove a hook from a lemon shark! Since then I have removed hundreds of hooks from 8 different species. No doubt this removes the pain from the shark as well as finally allowing the injury to heal, but it also has a huge affect on that person's future. These very lucky people usually channel their new found shark love into shark conservation! Nothing could make me happier! What seems so strange is that I don't know of a single person worldwide that teaches anyone how to make friends with any predator, yet we are doing this using the animals that our species is the most afraid of! This clearly shows that the misconception that sharks have been labeled (mindless man-eating monsters) is definitely wrong! This means quite a lot to me, as it is very difficult to get people who hate sharks to protect them! As Jacques Cousteau said "We only Protect What We Love!" What do you think of all this? Here you see me rubbing the lemon shark affectionately, the same that anyone would do with their dog! Although many of the lemon sharks have never had this before, they are definitely sentient creatures like dogs and come back to their new human friends repeatedly to get more shark love...affection! I use this new trusting relationship to get close enough to remove their hooks, which I started in 2002 and have removed 100's of hooks so far. Image by @Jim_abernethy // Operating at the World's Best Shark Dive, Tiger Beach for roughly 20+ years, since I discovered it and named it has enabled me to witness and capture amazing! Part of the reason this place has such a diversity and abundance of life is because of the constant warm water current bathing the area with nutrients from the Gulf Stream current! As a photography artist I usually have to wait endless amounts of time to allow scenes like this to happen! However, I'm very grateful, humbled and honored for the opportunity to showcase the animals I love, fight for there survival & protection as well as showing the world there true nature! Sharks are sentient creatures that definitely need our help immensely! Although they are legally protected here in Bahamas, just 60 miles across the Gulf Stream in Florida we still allow 1.5 million to be killed per year! How do you feel about this?
