Victoria’s legendary/mythical Pokémons.

Throughout her years of traveling and researching, Victoria had meet way to many legendaries/mythical pokemon for her to consider it to me normal, she stopped questioned it soon. Though she released most of them so they can go back to their natural habitat, some decided to stay…

Diancie

"Diancie isn't a pushover, so don't you dare mess with it or else you'll regret it."

Moves: Diamond storm, Moonblast, Iron defense, Power gem.

Ability: Clear body

Victoria was just trying to take photos of some Carbinks so she could surprise professor Sycamore when she saw Diancie being chased by a group of pokemon hunters.

After saving it, Diancie refused to leave Victoria's side, scared that the hunters will come back. Victoria allow it to stick nearby until she can capture a photo of some Carbinks. But after that was finish and Victoria tried to leave, Diancie still won't leave Victoria.

After some time of being conflicted, Victoria asked to capture Diancie to kept it safe from other pokemon hunters. Diancie agreed and was happily caught by Victoria, though the girl did notice it bringing a weirdly familiar stone after it was caught. Let's just say the Carbinks photos are not the only thing that surprises professor Sycamore that day.

Diancie is a very nice and princess like to the rest of the pokemons, but that doesn't mean it's a pushover. Victoria had taught it how to toughen up and allow it to spam Diamond storm if it ever find itself in a situation where some shady people was forcing it to make diamonds.

Diancie can also talk with other people with its telepathy, making it a bridge between the NRC students and pokemon after Victoria relaxed and began to have it out more often.

Zamazenta

"Thank you for helping me guard Ramshackle, Zamazenta. Now come here so I can brush your hair."

Moves: Iron head (Behemoth bash), Focus blast, Ice fang, Protect.

Ability: Dauntless Shield.

When chairman Rose release Eternatus much to Victoria's unamusement, Zamazenta along with its partner Zacian helped her and Hop stop it before leaving. Victoria thought everything was done until two weird guys with weird hair came in and ruin everything (seriously why do people always think it's ok to mess with legendaries).

After defeating a rampaging Zacian, Victoria was surprised that Zamazenta challenged her because usually the other legendaries only challenged her so she can borrow their power to fix something, but the issue has already fixed, does this means that it challenged her because it wants her to be its trainer? After Hop capture Zacian, Victoria decided to keep Zamazenta with her.

A gentle old soul that watches over her pokemons like a protector, Zamazenta will often herd Victoria's pokemons to their respective enclosure after dark, Victoria found it's oddly adorable with the way it nudges her Foongus with its nose back to its safe spot. Victoria will still pamper it even when it's a legendary pokemon, its favorite thing to do is have Victoria brush its very long fur.

It tolerates Crewel with his dog obsession.

Shaymin

"Shaymin? SHAYMIN!? WHERE ARE YOU?! NOT AGAIN!!"

Moves: Air slash, Seed flare, Dazzling gleam, Tail wind.

Ability: Natural Cure (land forme), Serene Grace (sky forme)

It all happened when Victoria was at a Gracidea meadow to study and collect them to sent back to her parents when she met a land form Shaymin who didn't follow the other Shaymins who are in their sky form that are migrating elsewhere.

She thought something was wrong with the pokemon so she bought it to nurse Joy to check it, thankfully it isn't hurt and it turns out that Shaymin just doesn't want to go with its herd anymore. The Shaymin lingers with Victoria instead and after a while, she caught it.

Shaymin is a cunning one despite its petite and innocent looks, it loves playing small pranks on the pokemon around it and even the trainer herself, but it usually apologize by nuzzling the people it teases.

Shaymin sometimes loves to escape from its home to explore nearby areas, thinking that Victoria could find it later on but forgetting that its small land form makes it hard to look for it, not to mention its green fur that matches the grass makes it even harder to look for.

Victoria swore Shaymin will give her gray hair before any of the end of the world scenarios does.

Ogerpon (female)

spoiler for the teal mask DLC so beware.

"I'm not sure that I can be better than your last partner, but I promise I will do my best to take care of you."

Moves: Ivy cudgel, Spikey shield, Superpower, Rock tomb.

Ability: Defiant (Teal Mask), Water Absorb (Wellspring Mask), Mold Breaker (Hearthflame Mask), Sturdy (Cornerstone Mask)

Befriending it in Kitakami village, Victoria found its story very sad. What do you mean its old partner was not only taken away by the Loyal Three (or Lousy three now that Carmine force her to say), but the village also isolate it because of a misunderstanding.

After getting back Ogerpon's three mask, Victoria was surprised when Kieran challenged her for Ogerpon's ownership. She tried to talk some sense into the boy, saying that Ogerpon belonged to no one and that she can choose who her trainer is, but Kieran doesn't listen, so with no choice, Victoria battled him for Ogerpon's freedom.

She's even more surprise when after she won, Ogerpon chose her to be its trainer. Although she felt quite guilty for Kieran, she can't take back her words of letting Ogerpon chose its own trainer so she caught it (with a friend ball of course).

The embodiment of a sunshine child, Ogerpon is always happy to be around people, she tries her best to cheer them up whenever they're sad. But she will also not hesitate to fight if her friends and trainers are hurt, she lost someone she cared before, she will not lose them again. Very powerful in battle with her intelligence and flexibility, Victoria utilized the masks she had a lot, Victoria also make sure to clean the masks frequently.

Miraidon

Minor pokemon violet spoiler.

"WAIT NO, MIRAIDON! BAD DRAGON! THE SANDWHICH ISN'T FINISHED-"

Moves: Electro drift, Parabolic charge, Draco meteor, Charge.

Ability: Hadron engine.

Saving it on the shore of a beach in Paldea with a sandwhich, Victoria has now officially adopt a dragon motorcycle-

After the whole ordeal with professor Turo, Victoria kept Miraidon as a promise to take care of it to the AI professor. Now Miraidon is her main ride pokemon, it can run fast, run on water, climb mountains, fly- so Victoria pampers it alot, to the point where it becomes kinda spoil.

Unfortunately, Miraidon is quite a glutton, especially for sandwiches, it sometimes gets impatient and snatches the unfinished sandwhich that Victoria is making for it, making the trainer had to do a round tug of war to get the sandwhich back.

Because Victoria doesn't travel much anymore when she got to Twisted wonderland, Miraidon will be usually seen lazing around and sun bathe alone outside of Ramshackle, sometimes it will hang out with the other pokemon, but it prefers to be by itself most of the time.

Doesn't really like fighting and engaging in combat so it prefers to stay on the side, but if it is put in a dead end or saw that its trainer got hurt, p r a y.

Still very affectionate towards people, it will lick the people it likes and covered them with its spit. Gross, but adorable.

Meloetta

"Thank you for calming the pokemon down in these times, Meloetta."

Moves: Relic song, Close combat, Psyshock, Disarming voice.

Ability: Serene Grace.

While Victoria was traveling, she found a Meloetta getting captured by shady people, it was struggling so she saved it right away.

Victoria is aware of the power that Meloetta hold and understand why it was being hunted, so after she treated its wounds, she decided to contact some pokemon rangers to retrieve it to safety.

The pokemon ranger told her to head to their base but it's quite a long way, so for a while, Victoria and Meloetta travel together. Meloetta can sense the stress that Victoria has while dealing with team Plasma at the time, so it would sing to calm her down.

When they got to the pokemon ranger's base, Meloetta is completely attached to Victoria. The ranger that had call her told her that maybe she should kept it safe instead because of how attached Meloetta is to her during their journey.

Like Diancie, Meloetta is trained to protect itself by Victoria as she doesn't want to restrict its freedom, especially when it likes to sing to people and pokemon that are in distress to calm them down.

When Victoria got transported to Twisted wonderland, she and her pokemon became more stressed in this new environment, so Meloetta took the task of relaxing them with its song.

Is often seen with Victoria's Primarina having a duet, the two of them seem to get along well.

Meloetta doesn't resort to fighting when in a conflict, so it would usually sing to calm the oppnent down or run away by turning invisible.

➣ BAEKHYUN ☾ baekaria

before being thrown into a supergroup together, aria and baekhyun hadn’t really spoken 

they’d seen each other around the building, and aria was an avid supporter of exo so of course she knew who he was but she wasn’t expecting him to know who she was 

so when aria walked into the practice room and was greeted by baekhyun waving her over and calling her name

sue her if she was a little stunned 

their relationship was a little stilted at the beginning

between the age gap, and baekhyun not having a girl member in a group before, it took a few weeks for the two of them to figure out their dynamic and where they fit around each other 

eventually though

they settled into a pretty comfortable situation

baekhyun tries to put her at ease as much as possible 

there is 8 years in the difference, but you’d swear that its less than half 

although he’s playful and generous with the teasing like he is to other members 

he’s careful to avoid certain topics when it comes to aria, just out of respect for her and not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable

this came to fruition after kai unknowingly made a small comment on how aria “must have been hungry”, considering how fast she was eating

baekhyun knew he didn’t mean anything by it, but he watched aria slowly put down her chopsticks and reach for the bottle of water beside her instead

he didn’t see her eat for the rest of the evening

did kai get in trouble? no but he did get hit lightly over the head

when aria does something cool - like a spin or a trick - baekhyun is the first to say “that’s my child. i raised her, look how well i taught her”

she always has said that taeyong is one of the pillars keeping her upright and sane - without him she wasn’t sure if she would have been able to complete her training 

because of all the schedules they share together, if aria isn’t rooming with mark then she’s definitely rooming with taeyong

whenever she does his makeup (more often than you’d think) she point blank refuses to cover his scar, even when he asks her to do so

The “Thank U, Next” singer is covered in tributes to her dogs, celestial designs, Harry Potter references, song lyrics and more designs, many of which were done by her go-to tattoo artist Girl Knew York.

Family

“Bellissima” and “Babydoll”

She has “Bellissima” and “Babydoll” — both nicknames given to Grande by her late grandfather, Frank — on her ribs and middle finger, respectively.

Ariana inked 561, the area code for Boca Raton, Florida, where she grew up, on her thumb.

Hebrew letters

Instagram

On another finger, Ariana has the Hebrew letters aleph, lamed and daled, which signify the 10th name in the 72 names of God, a Kabbalah teaching. Her brother Frankie Grande got a similar design at the same time; the two abandoned Catholicism in favor of the Judaism-based faith after learning about the Church’s stance against homosexuality.

Toulouse

One of the many cast of characters in the Grande family is her dog Toulouse. The pup is so important to the singer that she had her name added to her tattoo glove.

In December 2018, the pop star celebrated being named Billboard’s 2018 Woman of the Year by getting a hand tattoo just after the awards show, during which she pronounced 2018 the best year of her career but the worst of her personal life. “7 Rings”/ Japanese BBQ Grill

What was intended to be an ode to her single turned out to be a nightmare for Grande. In early 2019, Ariana showed off a painful hand tattoo of Japanese kanji letters that was meant to translate to “7 Rings.” However, social media immediately blew up when native speakers realized that because of the placement of the characters, the actual translation added up to “Japanese BBQ grill” or “tiny charcoal grill” in English. Grande went back to her artist more than once to fix the error, adding a heart to round out the design and correct its meaning. The intended message is only clear if you read (uncustomarily) from top to bottom then left to right.

She tweeted (and later deleted) a rant at the end of the controversy. “I can’t read or write kanji obviously. what do you want me to do? it was done out of love and appreciation. what do you want me to say?” She continued, “u kno how many people make this mistake and DON’T care just cause they like how it looks? bruh … i care soooo much. what would you like me to do or say? forreal.”

In December 2019, at the culmination of her “Sweetener/Thank U, Next” world tour, Grande and her team got matching tattoos on their hands to commemorate the experience. While Ariana chose the shortened “SWT,” others got dates and numbers with unclear significance.

H2GKMO, Reborn, Cloud hand tattoos

While dating Pete Davidson, Grande and her former fiancé showed their love for one another with multiple matching tattoos. The pair both got the acronym “H2GKMO” — which means “honest to god knock me out” — and the word “REBORN” on the side of their hands, along with matching cloud tattoos.

Grande has the word “always” across her rib cage in what appears to be the “SNL” star’s handwriting, which is a reference to Lily Potter and Severus Snape’s love story in “Harry Potter.”

She had the numbers 8418 (the badge number of the comedian’s firefighter father, who died on September 11) added across the top of her left ankle in June 2018.

In the days following their split, Grande and Davidson both went to work covering up or altering their matching ink. Grande covered the hand tats with a floral olive branch leaf. She also replaced the late Mr. Davidson’s badge number with “Myron,” the name of her dog, whom she co-adopted with ex-boyfriend Mac Miller and who now lives with her full-time following the rapper’s death.

After Grande released her “Thank U, Next,” music video, fans also noticed that she’d inked a black heart over her “Pete” finger tattoo. It is unclear whether she has altered (or plans to alter) her cloud tattoo.

In March 2019, Grande evolved her “always” tattoo by adding a creeping leaf design horizontally across her rib cage.

Behind her ear, the pop star has three small tattoos — R.E.M, a tiny black heart (which Pete Davidson’s rep told Page Six he later copied) and a lightning bolt, likely a reference to “Harry Potter.”

“Mille Tendresse”

Her second tattoo was the French phrase “mille tendresse,” a line from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” which Davidson also copied.

Manchester Bee

Perhaps the most meaningful tattoo in Grande’s collection is the bee behind her left ear. She got the ink as a tribute to the 22 people who were killed during the May 22, 2017 terrorist attack at her “Dangerous Woman” concert. The symbol of Manchester, England, where the concert took place, is the worker bee; Grande hosted the One Love Manchester benefit concert two weeks after the attack, and later posted an emoji of the insect when she was made an honorary citizen of the city. She debuted the ink two days after the one-year anniversary of the attack.

Not all of her ink has such significance: Grande has the word “hi” on her toe.

In dedication to childhood friend Courtney Chipolone, Ariana inked the word “court” on her knee as a play on words.

In May 2020, eagle-eyed fans spotted the word “baby” near the butterflies on Ariana’s upper arm, though it’s unknown when she had it inked.

Mystery tattoos

As if more than 40 separate tattoos in 2020 weren’t enough, there are a scant few that fans have only partially glimpsed. There are words on the inside of her right index finger, an unfilled shape on the inside of her left ankle and a string of letters (or perhaps words) on her upper left thigh that are unaccounted for.

And considering Grande’s penchant for spur-of-the-moment ink, it’s possible the singer has plenty of other hidden designs — and likely that more are on the way.

Is supposed to guard it but spends most of his time sleeping and eating Bill’s crops.) - Primrose: Clefairy, F (The clefairy Bill once fused with. Mischievous af. Originally from Hoenn but gifted to Bill in exchange for an eevee. Judges Kantonian clefairy hardcore. Apparently enjoys tinkering with things. Apparently a massive headache for Bill, who totally does not have father issues. - Mother: ???. Former kimono girl. World’s most patient woman. Loves her children equally, including her strange son who’s sometimes a pokémon. Just wants her kids to be happy and safe. Sometimes asks Bill in full-on Japanese in front of Lanette whether or not he’ll ever ask “that nice coworker of yours out” because “she’s cute and very interested in you.” - Older sister: Christa. Contractually obligated to kick Bill’s ass if he misses his weekly check-ins (to ensure he’s still alive and not a pokémon). The Mycroft to Bill’s Sherlock (canon, not BBClocke, you heathens). Jill-of-all-trades. Trainer extraordinaire. Runs a YouTube channel where she breaks into old places and hunts for ghosts. Sometimes those ghosts are real and perfectly catchable. - Younger siblings: Brother, followed by sister. Both are proud of their brother but don’t really get him. His youngest sister gave Lyra his phone number. - Grandfather: Galarian and thus doesn’t know every Kantonian/Johtonian pokémon. Good-natured. Physicist. Miiiiiight have worked on some top-secret Galarian projects, which might explain why skipped regions to go live in Johto back in the 60s. - Claims that the children of the kimono girls from his mom’s former troupe are his cousins. The only one who entertains this idea is gym leader Valerie. He has never met his mother’s actual family, nor does he know who they are.

Character Notes: - Animeverse but not really. Lives in a decomissioned lighthouse called the Sea Cottage because, as he puts it, “I can.” Also speaks with a very posh accent, dyes his hair green, and dresses like the Doctor, if not a gentleman from a steampunk webcomic. - Possesses wit drier than Orre. It’s often hard to tell whether or not he’s serious when he says he doesn’t know what’s up, but if it helps, just remember that the rock that he lives under has Kanto’s best wifi. - Would totally be an anarchist if he wasn’t egotistical enough to believe he can fix the system if they’d just listen to his friendly suggestions(, president of the Pokémon Association). - Worships Ho-oh and absolutely takes Ho-oh’s sacred flames in vain when startled/under stress. (The other Johtonian legends are technically his gods too, but he doesn’t take them as seriously.) - Strong believer in “do as I say, not as I do.” Will give people plenty of advice to not do stupid things, yet will do stupid things for science. - Thinks all life on Earth is worthy of respect. Unless you’re disrespectful to life on Earth, at which point, fuck you. (Note: Not an anti-abortion statement.) - Pacifist. This, combined with the fact that he’s not that great at strategy under pressure, is why he failed his gym challenge pretty hard. (He wasn’t that half bad of a trainer, though.) - Has accidentally merged himself with, in order: Primrose (the original Clefairy Incident—canon), rattata (canon), nidorino (canon), and finally flygon (powerverse). No one quite knows how he’s managed to do this unintentionally three times, but there you go. (Note: Everyone knows about the Clefairy Incident because Red is a snitch.) - Other canon facts: lactose intolerant, loves eevee (but also every other pokémon too), often unshakably bubbly regardless of circumstance. - List of confirmed crushes includes: the Goldenrod Flower Shop girl, Steven Stone, probably Lanette. - Apparently calls Lanette “luv” and “love” if he wants something. - Collects pokémon, comic books, and houseplants. Really likes superhero comic books in particular. Spinarakman is his jam.

Pokémon: - Mary: Alcremie, F (Adorable baby of the team.) - Evening: Galarian ponyta, F (Full name is Princess Evening Glimmer of Ponytaville Castle. Asshole ponyta who likes showing her affection with a well-aimed Psychic.) - Lacroix: Budew, M (Asshole budew who once dynamaxed and misses it.) - Ariel: Clefairy, M (Asshole clefairy who hates dragons. Apparently has a crush on Primrose and thinks her tinkering is adorable.) - Neptune: Swampert, M (Lanette’s starter. Brawns over brains. Pretty much watery Lucky. Enjoys chilling out in rivers/with Lucky instead of doing any actual guardwork.) - Sam: Medicham, M (“Sam” might have at one point been short for “Samsara”; Lanette realized this was not cool after she grew older. One of Lanette’s usual right-hand pokémon. Calm. Cool. Will punch you through the earth if ordered to do so. Can mega evolve. Serves as Lanette’s sounding board whenever Brigette isn’t around.) - Boxed: Skadi (Glalie, F), Braeburn (Applin, M—was going to evolve into an appletun but then just didn’t), Raijin (Manectric, M), Pepper (Flareon, F) - Formerly: Bill

Family: - Parents: Divorced. Both remarried. Lanette doesn’t talk about them much and is apparently not close with them at all. They were apparently both wealthy, however, which is how Lanette wound up going to pretty exclusive schools with no problem. - Older sister: Brigette, manager of Pokémon Bank. Extremely supportive of her sister but tends to take the “idgaf” road when it comes to admin shenanigans. Lanette shares everything with her. (Everything.) 

Character Notes: - ORAS version. Short hair. Cute dress. Don’t talk to her about that one time she wore pigtails. Collects plush pokémon. - Most people say Bill is the leader of the admins but actually think Lanette is. - Is the Team Mom. - Routinely keeps Bill from doing stupid things (except for that one time that they’re still working through). - Was roped into being the editor of the blog because someone had to do it. - Is perfectly aware that she more enables Bill than stops him from doing stupid things. - Is still, like, all of his impulse control and half of the impulse control of the other admins. - All of this, and she’s disorganized af. Her lab is a disaster. It’s only by Bill’s own will that his lab isn’t right now, now that she’s basically living at the Sea Cottage. - Bill might have invented the storage system, but she’s the one who gave it a GUI, hammered out most of its flaws, and beat the entire concept of user-friendliness into its inventor’s head until he stopped putting text command boxes on everything. - Likes cooking and loves sweets. Will fight you for cake. - Was at one point a coordinator and thus has an excellent eye for making things that are functional but also hella pretty. Earned almost all of the Hoenn ribbons before calling it a day. And she gave it up not because she wasn’t good at it but instead because she got really hella fed up with the culture surrounding contests at the time. - Still participates in Fallarbor contests now and then, just for fun. - Was apparently the one who reached out to Bill in the first place, rather than the other way around. That is to say, Bill was “the weird ghost kid” in Celadon University’s library until Lanette finally popped up and said, “Hi. You’re my friend now.” And they’ve been together ever since. - Bill routinely says the above event was seven years ago. This was actually when they were both thirteen. - Not-so-secretly loves cute, sparkly things, especially if they can kick your ass. (See: Princess Evening Glimmer of Ponytaville Castle.) - Not-so-secretly likes Steven Stone, Milo, and practically every other man (and some women) who’s cute and capable of holding their own in battling. (Much to Bill’s chagrin.) - Is perfectly aware that Bill not-so-secretly has a thing for her and thinks it’s adorable. Cares pretty deeply about him, at least as a friend, and absolutely wants to see him happy ... which is really why she’s often quick to shoot down his more reckless ideas. - Unironically likes romance movies and mysteries. Watches Groovy Froo (Scooby Doo but with a furfrou).

Jessie stayed behind, frozing to a pillar of salt. His words were still resounding in her ears. «Because I don’t want to fall in love with you». A wave of anger and disappointment overpowered her. She wanted to run after him and confront him, talk turkey and once and for all get things straight, but she drew in her horns, too proud, and too timid to hear the truth. He didn’t love her, he didn’t even like her, he was still a prisoner of his past. The wounds and scars reminded him of dangerous feelings, feelings from which he had to isolate himself. Even though it was years ago since he last saw and met Jessiebelle, she was still intimidating him to this very day. Jessie was without a chance, neither her beauty, her loyalty nor her charisma were able to bring James round. Her hand wandered up to a tiny star-shaped pendant, it was a gift James gave her back in Kalos. A reminder of her willpower, intransigence and combative spirit… Flashback: «Turn around, Jess», James ripped the necklace out of his pocket, a piece of jewellery he had stolen from Team Rocket’s lost and found. Gently and very carefully he put the golden necklace around her neck. His fingers ran down her shoulder blades. Feeling her soft skin underneath his fingertips, he imagined more intimate touches. But he was shy, he was reluctant and marked by bad experience. Nevertheless, the urge to kiss her neck and nibble on her earlobe outweight his fear of shame and pain. «James, what are you doing?» She felt a rising heat, goosebumps all over her body. His kisses aroused hidden wishes. He was so cautious, he didn’t want to hurt her. «Jessie», James whispered into her ear, «you’re already my queen, no matter how many times you win, no matter how many times you lose. Take this necklace as a sign of my deepest devotion, devotion from a true fan and supporter. Show them who belongs on the throne. Make us proud, my girl», he kissed her once more before letting her get ready for the upcoming showcase performance. End of flashback… «Never mind,» Jessie snorted contemptuously at her memories. After collecting herself and having gained new courage, she decided to leave the empty classroom and gathered with other students on the sports field. A young woman caught her eye. She remembered her, remembered her outstanding performances and close ties to her Pokémon. «Serena», Jessie had to dress up. She couldn’t afford any mistakes, for the sake of her trio. She quickly hid in the changing room, slipping into her old wardrobe. Taking a deep breath, she marched couragously towards her former biggest competitor. « Nice to see you, girl », the disapproving tone in her voice could hardly be overheard. « Jessilee », Serena bowed politely, « what are you doing here ? » she asked her. «I want to challenge you, how about a quick duel ? » Jessie looked at the now grown-up brat and noticed the embarrased look on her face. « I’m sorry, Jessilee, but I’m not really in the mood to battle you right now » a sigh of despair escaped her mouth. Jessie cocked an eyebrow. « What’s bugging you ? » Serena shrugged her shoulders. «I guess it’s what you call a cracked heart, not completely broken, but ruptured ». Jessie had to stifle a pejorative smile. « Let me guess, men are causing trouble, right ? » She sat down next to Serena, clubbing her leg over the other. The young woman nodded her head. «Tell me more, did he betray you, did he abandon you , did he exploit you, dropping you like a hot potatoe afterwards ? » Jessie could sing a song of unkind romances. She was used to men messing around with her, making her believe in true love only to bring her back down to earth in the most miserable way possible. «It’s just, forget it. I have to handle this on my own», Serena was already on the move when Jessie pulled her back. «Listen, girl. I give you a free advice. Let no man ever destroy your dreams and let no bloke ever take the crown off your head. Live, love and fight!» She winked at Serena, putting a faint smile on her face. «Jessilee », somebody with a rough voice cleared his throat. Jessie turned around, gazing into two dark brown eyes. « Yes?» The man seemed totally intimidated. «I just wanted to tell you that I’ve been a fan from the very beginning. I didn’t miss a contest, I cheered you, I supported you and I’ve always voted for you. Your grâce, your devotion, your temper make you one of the most outstanding showcase performers under the sun. May I be so impudent and ask for an autograph?» he bowed down in front of her, giving her the feeling of royal authority. Jessie laughed out loud. «You may, Sir» she snatched the pen from his hand, wrote down his name on a yellowed greeting card, placing a tiny heart in the right corner of the ornate writing. « Here you go, » pressing her lips onto the card, she left her unmistakable mark. The man thanked her many times, even shedding tears. Jessie didn’t know that James had observed her the whole time. He could have slapped himself for rejecting her. Rejecting the woman of his dreams by repressing the nightmares from memory, but he was a coward, a wimp. He wasn’t worthy of a queen… « Jessie », he whispered, « I’m losing you… » Meanwhile, Ash, Misty and Brock were diligently working on a project. A set case full of vitamins should help them decide which composition was most suitable for water type Pokémon. Misty was an ace in that field. The trio finished the task before all other students, receiving highest praise from their professor. «Misty», Ash broached  the subject once more, « did you give up looking for your parents ? » his friend paused to hold. « Listen, Ash. If there were any hints, even the tiniest clue, I would most definitely resume searching, but there’s absolutely no evidence and we should probably leave tings at a rest». Ash was about to start an answer when the doors swung open. «Ash!» Serena came running for him. She linked arms with her boyfriend, ogling at him. «Will you accompany me to prom night?» He was visibly irritated, not only because Ash wasn’t a fan of dancing and kitschy schmaltzes, but because he noticed the somewhat disappointed look in Misty’s eyes. «Sure» , he swallowed hard, avoiding Misty’s gaze. Serena clapped her hands and pressed a kiss on his lips. «Make sure to get dressed up!» She left the classroom like a twisted whirlwind. «Sorry,» Ash whispered, but Misty dismissed his apology with a wave of her hand. «No problem, Ash. I’m sure Brock is more than happy to join me as my dancing partner, right ? » Brock was completely over the moon. « Really, Misty ? Are you serious? You asking me on a date?» She slapped him. « It’s not a date, idiot. We’re just two good mates respecting the friendzone ! » Later that evening, Team Rocket called Giovanni to submit their plan. The phone rang nerve-wrackingly long until their boss picked up. «What do you want?» he was bored by their streak of bad luck, their faux-pas and the three unearned wages they cut off from Team Rocket every month. Jessie saluted into the camera. «Boss, I think we’ve worked out the perfect raid», she sounded so self-confidently, but her knees were shaking. «Let me hear», Giovanni was nervously tripping his fingers on the tablet, yawning provocatively. He was longing for a snatch of sleep, because in his dreams he was rarley plagued by the unsuccessful escapades of his three employees. « Sir, prom night is almost here, a big party where man and Pokémon celebrate. And by Pokémon we mean every single creature on the campus. Me, Meowth and James will organize this event, we’ll figure out each and every escape route and how we can smuggle in the grunts. One bang, one fright, abducting the Pokémon into the night.  What do you think, Sir ? » they were eagerly awaiting his answer. Giovanni sighed, chaos was already pre-programmed. «Don’t disappoint me! This is your last chance. ! » He ended the phone call without further instructions, leaving Team Rocket with an almost impossible task.

Anime had been a big part of (Y/n)’s life since she was a kid; Pokémon, Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh, all that good stuff. As she got older, all the newer anime just didn’t stick. She had heard of all the famous ones; Black Butler, Attack on Titan, My Hero Academia, but none of them looked interesting or sparked her enough for a watch. So she stayed with the retro stuff. When Gwilym found out about (Y/n)’s anime likings he couldn’t help but let a smile slip when she got giddy over some old things she had found; whether it be original drawings, figurines, buttons, toys, posters or even the original books or special DVD collection.

“Babe look!” (Y/n) said with a grin suddenly pulling Gwils hand in another direction, she came across an anime shop, “can we go in? Can we? Can we? Can we?” the girl pleaded.

“It’s your choice babe” Gwil said with a chuckle and smile. (Y/n) grinned and quickly ran into the shop, heading straight for the manga and DVD section while Gwil held back and slowly walked around looking at everything.

“Sweetheart!? HOW MUCH DO YOU LOVE ME!?” (Y/n) called out from wherever she was.

“I tell you every night. WHY” Gwil answered as he slowly made his way to his girlfriend. Gwil turned the corner and came face to face with a grinning (Y/n).

“They have the whole collection of Lupin the Third!” (Y/n) quickly said, “Please can we get them?” she asked, “this was my childhood and I was only able to watch the episodes!” she said quickly, hoping to con the man in front of her, Gwil chucked softly at (Y/n)’s antics before nodding.

“Yes we can” he said through his grin. (Y/n) quickly threw a thank you to Gwil before walking to the front desk and happily placing down the collection as Gwil trailed on behind, stopping quickly to grab a book and then placed it down on top of (Y/n)’s manga. ‘Manga for Dummies’ it read. (Y/n) cast a quick glance to Gwil before deciding against it and opting to later question him. Gwil paid for the books as (Y/n) happily bounced next to him with anticipation.

“Thank you” the person behind the counter mumbled as (Y/n) and Gwil started walking out of the store, plastic bags filled with Manga in hand. The door made a small dingle as the girl opened it to walk out and took Gwils hands, looking to the right she immediately saw a few people with cameras.

“Gwil, they’re back” (Y/n) said with a little sigh, she just wanted a nice, quiet day out with Gwil and her manga but that wouldn’t be achieved right now. A group of three teenage girls walked up to the Gwil and (Y/n).

“Could we have your autograph Gwil?” one girl asked shyly pushing a ballpoint marker towards the man, Gwil simply smiled warmly.

“Of course!” Gwil said happily, the other girls let out a breath as they grabbed pieces of paper or old receipts. Gwil signed the girl’s phone case, another girl’s receipt and the final one held out a Robin Hood book making Gwil chuckle softly at the irony. As Gwil signed the book he was given the girls looked to the bag that was wrapped around your elbow.

“Did you just come from that anime store?” one of the girls questioned as Gwil handed back the book to the one who wasn’t speaking.

“Yeah we did, Gwil was kind enough to let me buy some manga” (Y/n) said with soft confidence and a happy smile (which was contagious seeing as it made Gwil smile too) but the girls looked at each other before bursting out in fits of giggles and laughter. The smile was quickly wiped from (Y/n)’s face, as was Gwils.

“Y-you have a weeabo as a GIRLFRIEND!” one of the girls cackled as she doubled over for a second with her hand over her mouth. The paparazzi down the street started clicking their cameras even more now and opted for the flash on their cameras a well.

“SHES PROBABLY A FURRY TOO!” another one yelled. That comment made (Y/n) flush and tears spring in her eyes but she blinked them off; and made Gwil flush with anger.

“It’s none of your business what my girlfriend is or isn’t” Gwil said quickly. His grip tightened on (Y/n)’s hand, “now if you’ll excuse us. We have some light reading to do” he said before quickly walking away, tugging (Y/n) along slightly. The girls gaze stayed looking at the floor as the pair walked to the car only another street away. The car ride home was silent and thick with unwanted tension; Gwil was angry at the girls for saying such rude things to his beloved while (Y/n) couldn’t help but think that maybe Gwil didn’t like her having such a liking and addiction to anime and manga, she didn’t want to bring it up in case he ended up hating her and wanted her to move out. So she quickly got out the car when they got home and raced to the shared bedroom as Gwil brought in their bags form earlier, Gwil understood (Y/n)’s feelings and wanted the girl to feel comfortable so he let her go and didn’t chase, it would most likely only make things worse between them.

Gwil placed the bag of manga outside the door to the closed bedroom and knocked on the door, “your books are out here babe, I’m going to start dinner and I’ll call you when it’s done. Come out whenever you’re comfortable my love” the man grabbed his own book before heading off into the kitchen to make dinner. The door opened behind Gwil and the plastic bag was moved from the hall into the bedroom along with the sound of the door shutting quickly, at least she’s happy was all Gwil thought as he started on her favourite dinner.

Ding!

Gwils phone went off.

From: My Lover ❤

I hope I don’t embarrass you with my anime obsession…or whatever you are wanting to call it. I understand if you don’t want me to be around anymore, I can have my bags packed by morning.

Needless to say Gwil was shocked and sent a quick message back.

To: My Lover ❤

Darling its okay I promise. I don’t want you to leave me. Not ever unless it was an actual reason. And I promise you this isn’t a reason. Anime and those books make you happy and as long as you’re happy I’m happy; that’s why I also got that book, so I could understand and be happy with you. Not that you don’t make me happy anyway! But you get what I mean.

Gwil didn’t get a message back but continued with making the dinner.

The smell of (f/d) wafted through the house as Gwil set the table and lit some candles in the middle, it wasn’t meant to be romantic but (Y/n) deserved it after today. Since locking herself in the room (Y/n) had been storming through her manga and was already onto the last book before Gwil knocked on the door.

“Love? Dinners ready. If you want to eat in the room you can” Gwil said softly. (Y/n) got up from the bed and shoved a bookmark in the manga as she trudged to the door and unlocked it. Gwil stood before her in the same clothes as before but his hair was messier, he looked slightly pale and exhausted, probably worried about me (Y/n) had thought, her head dropped low and looked at the ground.

“I’m sorry” (Y/n) said softly, Gwil gave the girl a tight lipped smile.

“It’s alright, have some food and you can come back and keep reading” Gwil said softly, he kissed the girls head before walking off back to the table he had set up. A candle stand stood in the middle as the candles let off the only light, the smell was amazing as (Y/n) walked to the table, and a small smile graced her lips as she immediately recognised the smell as her favourite dinner to be served. Gwil stood behind her chair as the girl sat down and pushed it in for her before walking to his and sitting down, he looked to (Y/n) sheepishly. “I used your parent’s recipe” he mumbled softly, “I hope its okay”

“I’m sure its lovely Gwil, thank you” (Y/n) said softly before digging in, it tasted the same as it used to when she was a child; it was perfect.

“Would…” Gwil started before pausing a second, “would you teach me about the anime and manga you like?” he asked. (Y/n) stopped her chewing as she looked to the man in front of her.

“You want me to…teach you?”(Y/n) asked.

“I guess? Or watching and read. I’m not sure…” Gwil answered before continuing with his food, “it makes you happy and I don’t want those things the girls said to get to your head. It wasn’t right” Gwil said.

“We can watch it if you want” (Y/n) mumbled softly through a mouthful of food, she had covered her mouth with the back of her hand out of respect but it still came out a little muffled as she tried not to spill her food.

“Yeah? You wouldn’t mind?” Gwil asked, not knowing what he even meant by ‘you wouldn’t mind’.

“Why would I mind?” (Y/n) asked chuckling softly as Gwil shook his head.

“I don’t know” Gwil said through his smile as he continued eating.

“Well, which one did you want to watch first?” (Y/n) asked as she took a sip of her drink.

“Whichever is your favourite” Gwil said softly, this made (Y/n) shift slightly in her seat.

“Lupin the Third is my favourite” the girl mumbled softly.

“Yeah? What’s good about it? Whys it your favourite?” Gwil asked with a smile, trying to coax the girl into opening up more about this.

“W-well…Arsène Lupin III is the grandson of world-famous thief Arsène Lupin, and he's living up to his grandfather's memory as a high-profile thief himself. But because of this, Lupin III attracts the attention of the Inspector Zenigata of the ICPO, as well as other criminals. Lupin III's criminal lifestyle even seeps into his love life!” exclaimed a little with a smile remembering some bits of the show, “the main woman in Lupin III's world is Fujiko Mine, who Lupin III can never tell is working with or against him. Lupin even has a gunman partner called Daisuke Jigen!” (Y/n) finished with a smile.

“Well” Gwil said as he finished his food and put his utensils down with a smile, “sounds interesting, when can we start?” he asked and (Y/n) it her lip softly and shrugged.

“You know, whenever I guess I don’t mind” the girl said.

“How about after dinner?” Gwil asked with a knowing glint in his eyes. (Y/n) looked up with a smile and nodded, “then is settled!” Gwil said happily, “now, desert?” he asked.

“I would love some desert” (Y/n) said as she finished her last mouthful of dinner, “that was lovely Gwil. Thank you, for the food and help with the girls” (Y/n) said as Gwil took their plates. As Gwil set the plates so they wouldn’t drop while carrying them he bent down and kissed (Y/n) softly.

“My pleasure doll” he said softly before walking off.

Scrawlers! Is there anything your hoping to see with the new Evil Team in gen 8? (Besides a big bad lady team lead who is allowed to be awful come'on gamefreak PLEASE) I'm really hoping we see them used like plasma in gen 5 (I.E. Their plot and goal actually coincide with with the player character's journey) since we haven't gotten that in the last 2 gens now.

Hmm, I would say that all of the evil organizations have coincided with the player character’s journey, since you usually have to beat them in order to progress the story. I think what set Team Plasma apart in Gen V is that this was a crisis that involved the entire region. We had people on the streets talking and worrying about Team Plasma, and when Team Plasma raised their castle where the League used to be, the Gym Leaders themselves took to the front lines in order to defend Unova. (Which in turn makes Gen VI look so much worse, because that was the generation wherein the evil team wanted to commit mass genocide, and announced this in a region-wide broadcast, and no one—not the Champion, not the Elite Four, not the Gym Leaders—felt like getting involved. Amazing.) There was a real sense of urgency and stakes with what Team Plasma was doing. It didn’t feel like something we were doing on the side, something that was secondary to the goal of collecting badges and becoming the Champion; instead, it was something that put the entire region at stake, and near the end, you felt like you were collecting badges and facing the Elite Four not to become Champion yourself, but to stop N from accomplishing his goal. (Which made the realization that he beat you to it an even harder kick in the teeth. You raced there, out of breath, got through everything as fast as you could, and Team Plasma won anyway. Damn.) Like you, I would love to have that sense of urgency, those stakes, again. It’s part of what made Gen V’s story so memorable.

So to that end, if I had my way:

A female Big Bad who, yes, is allowed to be awful and is in this for her own ends. Lusamine was incredibly disappointing in so many ways, but the primary ways she was disappointing is the way she was “redeemed” by having her abused children look after and forgive her (taken to extremes in USUM when she was shown to be a Well-Intentioned Extremist, like what), and the fact that her role in the story essentially relied on male characters. We learn through NPC chatter that the Aether Foundation was actually founded by either her father or her grandfather (can’t remember which), and that the experiments and research were originally started by her husband, and that she became obsessed with Ultra Beasts as way to get him back. Lusamine had no accomplishments or motivations that didn’t rely on male characters in some way or another. While all the other Big Bads before her created their own organizations and had their own primary drives and goals, Lusamine didn’t. It was wholly disappointing, and since she’s the only female Big Bad the series has right now (if you can even call her that after what USUM and the anime did), it smacks of sexism.But this can be rectified by giving us a female Big Bad who’s allowed to be every bit of a villain as the male Big Bads before her were. Give us a woman who is arrogant, who is intelligent, who is dangerous. Give us a woman who is not sorry for the things she does, no matter how terrible. Give us a woman who built her organization from the ground up, who is respected by those beneath her, who presents a real threat and who isn’t interested in being a wife or mother, because she’d much rather be a queen. She can be a Well-Intentioned Extremist to a degree (such as, maybe she wants to rule the world because in her mind that’s the only way to curb crime and other dangers, and if she has to crack a few skulls to get to the top to make life better for everyone after that, so be it), but I want her to be on the same level as the male villains before her, rather than someone who is reduced to being a damsel in in distress at the hands of those same villains. If we had a female villain like that, it would make what was done with Lusamine feel less sexist, and more like just a story choice that was made with her character.

I want the whole region involved again. Like I mentioned in the first paragraph, I want stakes and danger. I want to see the Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and Champion doing their jobs. (Or maybe the Champion turns out to be the Big Bad, and we’re overthrowing a corrupt government … oooooh, that’d be pretty cool.) I want people on the streets to be concerned and nervous, and actually affected by what is going on. One of the easiest ways to raise stakes in a story is to show people (and pokémon, in this case) actually being affected. We saw that in Gen V with Team Plasma stealing people’s pokémon, the castle being raised, and the Gym Leaders getting involved to fight the threat. I’d love to see something on that scale again.

That said, I’d also like some moral ambiguity, too. The one area in which Gen V’s story fails is the fact that the very obvious grey area wasn’t addressed. N wants to separate people and pokémon because he believes that humans abuse pokémon. At the end of the story, he’s made to realize that he was wrong, and thus abandons his ideals wholesale. But the thing is, he’s not completely wrong. There are people who abuse pokémon. That doesn’t mean that people and pokémon should be wholly separated, but it also doesn’t mean that N’s cause is an unjustified one. What needed to happen (and what I was going to show in my novelization that I never finished) was N and the protagonist reaching a middle ground of understanding. Maybe there is no ideal solution, but neither side is wholly wrong (which also means that neither side is wholly right). There are people who abuse pokémon, just as there are people who love and cherish their pokémon. There is both good and bad in the world, and the important thing is to recognize that and work toward reducing the bad and increasing the good as much as you can, doing as little harm as possible.That said, I know why Game Freak stayed away from the middle ground in this case. Admitting that there were trainers—perfectly ordinary trainers—who do abuse their pokémon would put a dark cloud over the series and could potentially hurt sales if parents didn’t want their kids interacting with media like that. (Then again, the anime had no problem showing a trainer abusing his pokémon in the previous region (Paul), so who knows.) But even so, I’d like to see something like that in the upcoming story. Obviously the villainous organization is, well, villainous, and I do want the Big Bad to be allowed to be awful (particularly if she’s female), but at the same time I’d like to see, say, NPCs debating whether or not the villainous organization has a point. If there is a friendly rival (and I hope to god we still get a jerkass one if there is a friendly one again), maybe the friendly rival is tempted by the villainous organization’s ways and temporarily joins them. (While the jerkass rival stays adamantly opposed. Wouldn’t that be a twist.) Things like that would add depth to the story and, again, make things more interesting.

Branching story paths. I know we won’t get this, but it’d be so cool if we could have branching story paths and multiple endings. (And maybe multiple save files to go with those multiple endings, please, Game Freak, it’s 2019.) Maybe you’re given the option to join the villainous organization, and you can actually take that option and agree to join them, and so you get an ending suited for that. You also get an ending for refusing to join them, one for joining and then betraying them later, and so on. This is more of a wide-scale game idea than anything else, but along with the moral ambiguity (however much there can be), I’d like it if we were actually given multiple endings, and that those endings did tie into the villains somehow. They’ve been asking us if we want to join Team Rocket since 1996 and they’ve never let us do it. Come on, Game Freak. Even if it’s not Team Rocket specifically, it’s still time.

So yeah, those are my wishes. I don’t expect to get any of them, but it would be nice, haha. I just wish the story could match the calibre of Gen V again. Gen V wasn’t perfect (the lack of moral ambiguity and Bianca’s treatment being the most glaring flaws), but it was damn well near. I’d love to meet that calibre again … here’s hoping that Gen VIII delivers. :)

Octopath Traveler Liveblogging

Chapter 3 for Therion, Ophilia, and H’annit.

Therion

The gameplay of this chapter comes with a few twists, including a few fake-outs before the boss and a hint of that Path Action-related variability I suggested last time with Olberic. Even the boss had some new tricks, including instant revival after a break and partial weakness guarding. There’s also a treasure chest right at the end you have to backtrack into the dungeon to get because of cutscenes...damn trolling designers.

The story is really what to talk about though. While I am fully aware that the surface-level explanation for Therion’s feelings regarding Darius is that he’s slow to trust people because he fears betrayal and that betrayal in his case meant being shoved off a cliff, this chapter gets so much better if you assume they were screwing. Not just in the sense that gay sex makes everything better, but because it lends a heftier weight to their interactions and to the various bits of party banter wherein the characters dance around the subject. Cordelia Ravus is the one to get through to what Therion is feeling in the moment by revealing to him how her money-hungry relatives descended upon her after her parents’ death. I can relate - though not in a way that I would consider that betrayal. But I digress.

I am excited to see how Therion’s Chapter 4 unfolds, since we’ll be getting more scenes of Therion and Darius’s bad romance and also more of Heathcote the suspiciously well-connected butler. Darius’s theft of this chapter’s dragonstone also removed some of the predictability from Therion’s story, giving it less of a “collect X plot trinkets in dungeons” Zelda-esque feel.

But why does Wellspring’s black market have so many giant bugs in it?

Party banter highlights: The black market makes Cyrus uneasy and Tressa weirdly excited, H’annit couldn’t speak slyly if her life depended on it (even ignoring the weird dialect), Primrose refuses to take this seriously, and Ophilia and Olberic try and fail to get Therion to open up about what happened between him and Darius. Alfyn’s may be the best though, as it’s a cute and shippy scene with Alfyn doing his best to look out for Therion.

Ophilia

This chapter overcompensates for the absence of a relevant plot in Ophilia’s last chapter with an overabundance of it, to the point that I wish they had employed a cutaway or some other technique for foreshadowing to better set this one up back in Saintsbridge. To wit, there’s an evil cult (that might be the same as the ones who killed Primrose’s father? All the mysterious evil guys in this game dress the same) who opposes the teachings of the Sacred Flame, and they manage to steal the Flame from Ophilia. Their first attempt fails because it involves small children* and thereby underestimates Ophilia’s legendary prowess with those, but the second attempt - which comes after the boss and the conclusion of the chapter’s main action, by the way - involves manipulating Lianna’s grief over her father’s death by dangling over her head the possibility of necromancy or something like it. I assume that, unlike a similar situation in FE8, there won’t be any implied necrophilia this time.

All in all, drama and suspense and an interesting boss fight with two targets with no shared weakness and mostly (entirely?) magical damage. It rivals Therion’s in how well it builds up to a big Chapter 4. I wasn’t surprised at all that the trader from Chapter 1 made a reappearance, and if he turns out to be evil I’ll be even more unsurprised.

*One of whom is the daughter of the local bishop, further adding to my theory that many of Orsterra’s problems wouldn’t exist if they mandated clerical celibacy.

Party banter highlights: Ophilia bro-zones Alfyn (not that there was much there to begin with), H’annit/Ophilia sails strong, and Primrose at last discusses her definition of faith with the party cleric. Aside from the femmeslash potential this chapter was kind of dull for banter honestly.

H’annit

H’annit gets her animals to beat someone up, explores a forest, and slays a massive supernatural beast, Round 3. This time she really sets the bar high for the inevitable showdown with Redeye by facing an actual dragon, and not an easy one either. I don’t fault H’annit’s story for having perhaps the most formulaic narrative rhythms; hunting like this is just her Thing, and each chapter so far has been sprinkled with enough character work to keep them from feeling repetitive.

Her adventure in Stillsnow features Susanna, a seer who uses real world divination techniques to tell fortunes rather than anything magical. She regards H’annit as her adoptive granddaughter via Z’aanta while also making coy remarks about her other adoptive son’s obvious crush on H’annit. That’s a lot of quasi-incest. It’s reassuring to note that, in this tale of slaying dragons and curing petrification, the banter between the characters remains grounded and fairly heartwarming if one is into found family narratives. Linde also gets to play around with some kids, so there’s something for the internet’s perennial love of cats as well.

Incidentally, for the first time since her Chapter 1 I’ve been playing around with H’annit’s capture ability. It definitely comes with some of the frustrating RNG elements of Pokémon, but I can see why people praise the potential if you’re willing to seek out the really good captures.

Party banter highlights: Cyrus possibly foreshadows a future sidequest on Susanna or at least some exposition regarding her, Ophilia and H’annit bond even more over Linde, Primrose prods at H’annit’s questionable attraction to men, and Alfyn literally prods at her in a culmination of this chapter’s strange recurring motif of people not respecting her personal space. I can’t even tell what Susanna and Z’aanta (in a flashback) are meant to be doing based on the sprites, but H’annit’s clearly not comfortable in any of these situations. Your guess is as good as mine. *shrugs*

I - Autumn's naps

The ones who can’t play | ~2000 words

"That's nothing serious," The doctor promises. "But you'll need to not run nor jump for some times. You can do that, right?" The black haired girl nods. It seems easy in her naïve mind. She wants to heal the faster possible, so she could play with her friends again. And she's ready to say yes to anything (and everything). She hurts her ankle pretty badly when she was playing tag, an hour ago. All tears abandoned her tiny six years old body as one of her classmates runs to found the teacher and, from that, to take her to the infirmary. And now, her leg is trap between a splint. She stands up, walks a bit to see how she can move. She probably looks weird. At least, it's not as painful as she thoughts. She's almost disappointed it's not broken because she could have a plaster cast: everyone would have made nice drawings on it. Oh, well. The doctor said she would have to stay in class at the playtime. She's depressed about it, but didn't argue. She just pouted in a fit of pique to be excluded from her games and friends. What else could she do anyway? Her parents are probably the most irritated and annoyed by the situation in that regard. She could still hear their scolds even now... When the playtime finally comes, she takes some felt-tip pens and a white sheet of paper. The child sight, thinking at this point it would be better to have stayed at home — and just like that, she starts drawing her house. "What are you doing?" Her orange eyes look up. It's a boy from her age — his name is Nikaidou if she remembers well. She knows him; he's in her class, after all. But she wouldn't say they are friends, not even acquaintances. He's just there, in the background of her life. "I'm drawing my house," She answers a bit flatly. "And you?" "Nothing for now. Can I draw with you?" She nods, and he sits quietly on the chair next to her. Minutes go by in the complete silence, save from the screams from the outside et and rubbings of the felt-tip pens. She looks at the clock, apprehending the end of this quiet moment. "Are you done?" She asks. She's curious about what he made. "Almost." He looks very concentrated on his task yet a bit unpleased judging by the frown on his forehead. The girl leans to have a peek on his work: he is doing a house too. Probably his she supposes. "Don't look!! It's not complete!" He screams as he puts his hands on his sheet to hide it. "Sorry!" She straightens herself, looks away before returning to her drawing. She already added the most colors, the most details as possible. There is nothing she could add... except maybe her name at the back. So she does, in her struggling and shaking handwriting.

It's perfect now! "I'm finished!" Nikaidou beams at her as he moves his drawing to her face. She blinks, a little startled by his brutal swinging mood, before taking it. He takes her in exchange. Both children examine their respective artwork like some art connoisseurs, trying to discover all the details and hidden messages. "Is it your dad?" Kotone asks while pointing to the man with black, spiky hair and a tie bow. "Yes! He's always coming piking me after school." "Uh-uh! Me, it's my mom. If I have been good, she buys me nice snacks before coming back home!"

There is something else that draw her attention: the cars. There is one black, flat car, but it's the other one who intrigues her the most. A red cross is on the top, remembering her an ambulance. Maybe he wants to become a doctor? He seems to have drawn himself inside. "Your mom?" He shows the woman surrounded by pink hearts. "Yes! There is a lot of hearts because I looooove her!" "She looks scary..." "It's because she is! When she screams, even the neighbors can hear her! That's why I dress her as an Oni with a yelling mouth." "Oh, that's made completely sense!" He approves. "Thankfully, she's not always like that. She can be very nice too! Otherwise, I wouldn't like her, tehehe!" His smiles got wider, his legs start kicking the air under his chair with excitement.

"My mother isn't very often at home," Nikaidou comments, "But she is really nice. So is my father! How is yours?"

"My dad... is always tired. All he does at home is sleeping, watching the TV and smoking! He's not really fun. Super boring!" She adds while dramatically rolling her eyes. Suddenly she wonders: "Do you wanna be a doctor?"

"Huh? Not especially, why?"

"Why did you draw an ambulance?"

"Oh," His excitement fades instantly. "It's because I have to go to the hospital. My dad is going to go with me and will drive me back once I'm better." At first, Kotone thinks nothing of it... Until it rings a bell. She remember in the beginning of the year, their teacher have said to the classroom Nikaidou has a medical condition. It’s still pretty vague in her mind, but little girl understands better why he pictured that. Her thoughts quickly leave her mind as she focuses again on the paper. "Your rainbow is neat!" Kotone compliments with a very serious face. "Thank you! I really did my best to not exceed!"

With that, his cheerfulness comes back. They both continue chatting until the next class.

And this is how their friendship starts. For all the following playtime, the two would draw, make puzzles, read stories (or at least, try to) and play with anything they could find worth of interest. Like sticks, a snail she had sneaked on her way to school (she was caught and scold by their teacher. Before leaving, she had to clean the classroom. Even if Nikaidou only watched her slimy friend discovering the table, he helped her, so she could leave sooner.), her collection of Pokémon cards (she was green with envy at his. She has no idea how it's possible to have so many cool cards.), nice rocks where they drew funny faces and gave them silly names...

However, even if these times were precious and amusing, Kotone couldn't help but languish of the outside. Moving, running as she pleases, jumping in the water's puddles...

"To think I was the best at tag," The girl mumbles as she puts her chin on the table. "Being inside is so lame."

Nikaidou eye's raise up to his drawing to her, before turning his gaze away. He looks thoughtful. "Isn't it how you ended up hurting yourself?"

"Uh? Ah, yes. Takashi was after me," She looks straight into his eyes as her face becomes dead serious. "He was getting closer and closer, like a hungry wolf hunting a delicious rabbit. But! I wasn't going to get caught. I was going to use my ultimate technique: the banana strategy!"

"The banana strategy?" Her friend repeats with incredulity.

"Yes! It's my ultimate technique. When someone is running after you, you slow down to make them believe they won — and at the very last moment, you turn around and double faster!! Your trajectory is then just like when you open a banana!"

"Clever!"

"Indeed!" But her proud expression turns into a disgruntled one. "At least, until you fail to notice the small stair between the red and the grey space. And then, BAM!" She screams as she pushes the table, making her chair topples and her with it.

"Nakagawa! Are you okay?" The boy stands up and quickly approaches her.

"No: I am dead." Kotone says dramatically, eyes closed and tongue out. "Ugh."

Nikaidou snorts, making the little girl snaps open her eyes and smiles. She tries to get up, only to let a "Ow!" as a sharp pain jolt her ankle. Without hesitation, the boy reaches out to her and she gladly accepts his help.

"Thanks." Even though her thankfulness is sincere, her eyebrows knit together as she stares her splint. Kotone's cheeks swell: she is disappointed that after three weeks her ankle still hurts.

"This doctor was a dummy! Some times, some times — more like FO-RE-VER!" she screams as she kicks the chair with her good leg.

"Nakagawa! Stop messing around!" The teacher snaps as she comes closer. "What happen?"

Both of the children become awfully quiet, looking the floor as it could turn them invisible. The teacher simply sights, asks them to be quiet as she puts the chair up. Without out, an idea lightens her eyes as she cheerfully proposes to the students: "Hey, what if we made drawings on the class board? You would like that?"

"Yes please!" They cry as oneself.

Once the chalks in hand, doodles full the blackboard before the adult could blink. Too soon for them, they have to clean it as the bell rings the end of the playtime.

Soon enough, Kotone could walk without pain. Days passed has July come in and, with it, the suffocating summer warmth. But do kids care? Absolutely not. If anything, they play even harder until tiredness and thirst knock them out. And Kotone plays, plays in all the games she couldn't during this never-ending half month. Yet, she couldn't help but feeling she is missing something. It's not as fun as before. The girl doesn't understand why, couldn't find the word on this strange feeling. Probably because this is the first time she is experimenting this mixture of emptiness and bitterness.

The balloon flies away, escaping the playground where the children were doing their party of dodgeball. Kotone, already been out, runs toward it as she screams to her classmates: "I've got it!"

But as fast the black haired kid runs, the balloon rolls faster only to stop its course when it meets the wall of the elementary school’s building.

When she picks up with the balloon, her eyes meet Nikaidou’s ones.

He is sitting on the stairs, not quite alone as their teacher is watching him apart, but somehow she could tell he felt lonely. Without thinking much, she comes to him with a bright smile on her face.

"Nikaidou! Come play with us! We're playing dodgeball!"

But as soon she reaches him, a shadow passes on his face. "It's too hot for him," The teacher cuts. "He mights get very sick if he goes with you."

"Uh?" She glares at him, seeking any clues of illness, but he just looks as usual for her. She frowns as he looks away with an annoyed expression. "He doesn't look sick."

"Too much exercise may cause him to faint." The adult explains.

The girl keeps staring with a disgruntled face, her eyebrows narrowing further.

"Well, see you when you feel better!"

It's probably what she would have said if she didn't get a splint. But instead, she stays quiet. She thinks, thinks that she would have been ever more bored if Nikaidou haven't been there. Nobody did reach her — not necessary out of spite, more because of ignorance and brushing it off as not being a big deal. Kotone has come to realize it because not long before, she thought like them. And, more she watches Nikaidou, more it becomes obvious he's dying to join them, twisting his tiny puzzle piece in his hands with a pout.

"I come back." She says in a determined voice.

It's not she didn't want to play anymore. In all honesty, she would have preferred to go back with the other kids. But Nikaidou is her friend, and friends stay with each other in need or joy. Even if it starts with a fortuitous meet, if he's going to bore, at least she'll be bored with him.

As she gets her way back, the boy's face is radiating happiness.

Kissed by the Baddest Trainer! [KBTBB Pokemon!AU]

(Based off a lot of @maidofstars’ and @catchthespade’s posts. MC is making her way through the towns and getting badges and ribbons, like Nando from the anime, while meeting different people and their Pokémon. Will she run into the eight men from before? What happens to them after they meet her?)

Adventure Log 2

The tensions are high as ___ waits with her fingers crossed for the judges' final decision. She enters this contest with Gyarados. It was between her and this girl with a Meinfoo. Within seconds she spins in joy upon holding her third Ribbon, denim jacket fluttering. The Crosshatch Ribbon is her's! Gyarados roars in triumph then nuzzles her. He bumps Meinfoo, who refuses to acknowledge the friendly gesture. ___ shakes her opponent's hand, who accepts with a small smile. "You did great Gyarados," ___ laughs watching her friend dive into a large bowl of kibble. "I'll let you take a break before we do another battle or contest." "Excellent performance," comes a familiar voice and ___ turns to see Ota with- "What are you doing here Mr. Ichinomiya," ___ stumbles in surprise. "To see you compete live instead of in my office," Eisuke states. "I have an offer for you." ___ straightens then relaxes as she realizes Minccino dives into her shirt again. She can see Persian eyeing her that a large tail gets in its way. ___ feels Minccino move and sees her sit on Gyarados' head with a content smile. ~*~ Eisuke smirks on his way back to his office. He feels a level of satisfaction over becoming ___'s sponsor. Though he does have a disappointment. Persian picks up on it and rubs against him. Ninetails pops out of his Poké Ball and rests his head on his leg. Eisuke places a hand on each Pokémons' head with a small sigh. He would really like for ___ to be a model for the company but she refuses. He feels the weight of the case in his waistcoat pocket and contentment fills him. Asking for a copy of her performance was easier than he thought. He cannot get over how ___ looks as she was giving Gyarados orders and watching at how she still manages to maintain a cute appearance with her denim theme outfit. He smirks thinking that Ota overdone himself in designing the outfit. Personally, Eisuke believes that ___ can be wearing a simple dress with a few pieces of accessories and still be the prettiest girl ever. "I'll get her to cave at one point," Eisuke admits to himself. "It will happen." He has little idea how driven ___ is to her goal. ~*~ Soryu frowns at the reports on his desk. What had been put together is a hideous picture of data and images. The images of dead or captured Pokémon and how the latter got treated before sending off to various humans. The gathered lists are just as bad too. He will have a set of this go to Mamoru but he's not sure if he slacker would even do it. He slams a fist into his desk and a blue winged head pokes up. It didn't take as long as he thought it would take for Dragonair to warm up to him had it not been for Chisato. The woman's Pokémon Day Care isn't far from Luke's compound and he was grateful that the building has the some of the same equipment as a Poké Center. And now Dragonair is attune to his emotions as his other childhood Pokémon. "I can't believe we can't get these people arrested without enough evidence," he explains. Dragonair rests his head on Soryu's shoulder with a small whimper. He rubs his muzzle with a small smile. "Yeah. Even if there isn't enough, the captured Pokémon are enough proof," he mutters. Giving Ryosuke a call, Soryu orders him to get some blank files and sterile surgeon's gloves. He's going to give Mamoru the list during the next meeting. ~*~ Pokémon Hunter F scans the area through their visor from an open airlock. This is the wrong location to find the Thunder Fang Growlithe. The client has a mill of Pokémon category dogs with the drive to make the perfect Pokémon of every dog type there is. Including one for the Arcanine who's pre-evolved form can attack with the move they're seeking. Arcanine isn't a city animal by nature so they had to narrow it down to the locations that there is a dense population of them. Where they are now doesn't work. The subordinate is really off on entering the coordinate. Huh? They see a familiar hair color pedaling down a road peeking from under the branches. Using their visor, they see that it's ___. They almost call out to her but then stop. They didn't want ___ to know what happened to them. Being kidnapped from their home at a young age by the previous Pokémon Hunter F and training to become the next hunter. It goes against their gentle persona but now they are aiming to use it so they can be with their friends again. Finding a child to be the next hunter won't be easy and they can't find one without having the child's family to suffer their pain. In a way, doing their job helps them to forget that pain. To their friends, they are dead. Their family cover the kidnapping with that lie. They know that their parent was in a hard position to either lose their lives or let them be the next hunter. ~*~ Baba studies the castle in front of him. It wasn't one but by the architect's standards it was sorted as one due to the design. Hidden traps and false passages litter the place. Fake doors and concealed rooms pop up in unpredictable patterns. But Baba is ready for it. The goal he's looking for is in a man's personal office. A large collection of Mega Stones with their respective Key Stones. He is also getting it for his occasional helper. Gyaradosite is super rare as the Pokémon itself. A Trainer with a Gyarados means that they catch the Pokémon on their own or evolve it from a Magikarp. The former is a hard option because of how powerful Gyarados is. Those thoughts run through Baba's head as he makes his way to the office. He summons Klefki and they both break into where the large case is set. High and intense security measures are set into place but Baba is ready for that. Zoroark changes into the man and deactivates the system long enough for him to replace it with a fake one and leaves. This is going to be great. Especially when he has one he can now Mega Evolve. ~*~ Mamoru flops onto his bed with a groan. Of all days why today did he have to be with Hayami and Ayase on a three versus three battle? Them versus the small group of poachers was a risk that he didn't like at all. The hunters couldn't stand a chance against their Mega Evolved team, especially when Hayami's Pidgeot keeps on striking them out. Just the dumb part of getting the goons to stay in one spot was worse than the battle itself. "Jumpluff, Sleep Powder," he grumbles while letting the Pokémon out. He falls asleep until Arcanine wakes him up. Now what?... his cooking is so-so... ~*~ Luke puts Audino's ball next to Chansey's so they can sleep better. They'd finish the last of the Pokémon that all was left to do is the medical reports. He cannot believe the nerve of these people, which almost had him snapping his pencil in half. Pokémon are amazing creatures and he has the greatest honor of studying them. But to hurt them is- "Unforgivable... I won't ever forgive them," Luke frowns as the last sentence is done. "They are just as annoying as those who try to catch Legendary Pokémon... foolish."

Author’s Note: Luke values life so it does make it relevant that he’s pissed off about people hurting Pokemon. The castle sized house? Luke’s third season MS shows how big his house is... used it because old-days castle in the East and West both had secret passageways and booby traps.

There's an Animation Revolution Coming and We Need to Pay Attention

There is an animation revolution coming and we really need to start paying more attention to it. If you were born during the 1990’s, you experienced what I like to call the “Golden Age” of cartoon series in America. This was when Cartoon Network actually had a huge set list of cartoons for children, as well as provided exposure to Japanese animation (i.e. Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Pokémon), before Spongebob was the face of Nickelodeon, and you didn't have to go to some other channel to enjoy quality cartoons from Disney.

We may not have noticed it when we were young, but a lot of these cartoons actually had depth in the sense of the lessons we should be applying to our lives. The Powerpuff Girls taught to us all that you should always fight for justice, no matter what kind of person you are; Kim Possible showed us that you could be a girly girl and still kick some ass; Pokémon stimulated our imaginations, and motivated our sense of adventure. Those are just a few examples, but for each person, it was different.

Unfortunately, after the early 2000’s, there was a decline in quality animated shows for kids. For the longest time, if you weren’t into anime (Japanese animation) then all you really had to choose from were shows like Dora the Explorer or Family Guy. There was no good in-between, until now.

Like I said, Cartoon Network used to have a huge set list of cartoons until recently. They were the cartoon elitists. It is literally a network for cartoons. And it’s not like they haven’t noticed. Whenever Cartoon Network does a movie special, there is a segment where all their cartoon characters gather in an imaginary movie theater to “watch” with us. During my childhood, the theater was always full. But that was in the early 2000’s. In 2012, there was a photo going around on the internet showing that they brought this segment back, However, instead of an imaginary theater with a huge crowd full of a variety of characters, there were about ten characters. The photo compared the 2002 version to the 2012 version, and it was very depressing. Most of the characters in the 2002 version are now found on Cartoon Network’s sister channel Boomerang, a channel meant to show Cartoon Network originals that are 10+ years old.

Cartoon humor in the 90’s was arguably crude but not necessarily in a negative way. It was full of a lot of sarcasm (to say the least) or poking fun at real life social issues going on. Some cartoons like The Proud Family were explicit about these issues, whereas cartoons like The Powerpuff Girls would touch on issues without explicitly saying which ones they were talking about.

Suddenly, the only cartoons that actually related to real life issues were featured on adult cartoons channels, leaving children with  no real exposure on how to actually deal with real life social issues. I found this to be a real issue. Media is very influential, and most kids watch cartoons. People seemed to forget that cartoons can be educational, as well as entertaining, and sometimes can be a lot easier for children to retain information from them because it sparks their imaginations.

The only cartoon that seemed to still be doing this during this period of animated decline was Avatar: The Last Airbender. When the series ended in 2008, there seemed to be an uproar. People were craving a good plot filled with life lessons. Then in 2010, Adventure Time debuted, a new and satisfactory aesthetic of cartoon expectations began to arise.

We are in a time where the values of diversity and relatability are targeted more often by audiences, especially by us millennials. This is because we want future generations to feel as included as possible, because despite the great shows we watched while growing up, there was still a lack of diversity from race to sexuality. We also, as a society, seem to ignore the age group of eight- to twelve-year-olds who are not quite young enough that they need cartoons to learn how to count, but also should not be exposed to the crudeness of Family Guy and the like. It is when Adventure Time debuted that this age group started to actually receive attention. This period of development between ages eight and twelve is so important, because this is the stage when kids develop prime social skills and do so through what they see, especially on TV.

However, sometimes kids don’t want to watch actual people on TV. I know, because I was one of those kids. So we need to have a little something for everybody. Adventure Time definitely started out as something that seemed like 15 to 20 minutes of nonsense, but as it gained popularity, it also gained more depth.

The series follows the adventures of Finn, the last human on earth, and Jake, his adoptive brother who is a magical dog, in the Land of Ooo. As the series progressed, it sparked several conspiracy theories from fans and the creators of the show went off of those theories, created storylines for episodes that either validated or invalidated them. The episodes would provide life lessons about being who you want to be, having trust in others and yourself, not letting people take advantage of you, and much more. The show also grew with the audience. The voice of Finn has admitted that as Finn got older, he would change the pitch of his voice to match the time that has passed.

This show paved the way for more shows with solid plot lines filled with life lessons like Gravity Falls, Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and–my personal favorite–Steven Universe to make an impact. All of these shows have a complex story line and/or diverse and relatable characters. In their own unique ways, they teach kids life lessons in similar ways as cartoons in the 90’s did.

A lot of these shows are very popular with millennials, which is not a bad thing. Millennials are arguably the most nostalgic generation. Growing up happened in a blink of an eye to a lot of us. To get the feeling of being a kid again is something that drives us, to some degree. It is the diversity of these cartoons that is attractive to us. Star vs. the Forces of Evil features a Latino main protagonist; Steven Universe fights the stigma of hyper-masculinity with a cast of mostly people of color and several strong female characters; Gravity Falls features an eccentric, strong, and girly main character and emphasizes the importance of healthy familial relationships. When we see something that remotely relates to our childhood, we try to hold onto it and keep it as pure as possible. Thus, our interest in these cartoons keeps views up without us asking to alter in any way to make it seem more “adult”. With millennials being interested in these kinds of animated shows, it leads to a “trickle down” theory in a way. Let me explain.

For the most part, cartoons for adults really only include crude, insensitive humor. The Simpsons was the only adult cartoon that had some kind of depth to it until recently and somehow, Seth MacFarlane managed to dominate the adult animation game. Even so, the same trope was followed: dumb, unattractive father; attractive housewife who is either equally dumb or slightly smarter, and is secretly unhappy in some aspect of her marriage, which is tested constantly; daughter who does not fit in, and is ridiculed either by the rest of the family and/or the society around her (or daughter who is slut-shamed for being sexually active); dumb, reckless son; and baby who is secretly smarter than everyone in the house. This can only be entertaining for so long, and Seth MacFarlane managed to make three shows (Family Guy, American Dad, and The Cleveland Show) with these exact same tropes, making them get older even faster.

Then in 2011, Bob’s Burgers debuted. It was another animated sitcom about a family living their everyday life. However, the difference was that the tropes had a little bit of a spin. You have Bob and Linda who are actually happily married. When they fight, it is never serious enough where the plot is focused on it. They encourage each other, and neither of them are smarter than the other per se. Then there are their children Tina, Gene,and Louise. Tina is a very confident, socially awkward teen whose means for going about things is never attacked for it by her family. When she is attacked for how she is by people in the society around her, her family comes to her rescue without hesitation. Gene, the only boy, is arguably very genderfluid but again, never attacked for it. This aspect of Gene is also never used as a means of tension between him and his father. Louise is very eccentric and, you guessed it, never attacked for it. Instead, the whole family accepts the kind of person she is. Also, all of the children act as they would in their respective age groups despite the jokes that are made and the audience is definitely reminded. As a collective, the family is weird but they are all super supportive of each other, something that was only really seen on The Simpsons. But even then, the supportiveness was usually seen  after they were encouraged to suppress it, or after a family member  was ridiculed by another . Bob’s Burgers  has also demonstrated  respect to pronouns with a recurring character named Marshmallow: a transwoman for whom the family always makes sure to use the pronouns “she” and “her”. Bob’s Burgers has been running for a good six years now and has been very successful. The show is still has some adult humor, but it is not as crass as that of any of Seth MacFarlane’s past creations.

We are entering a new age of cartoons that needs all the attention it can get. We need to make sure that kids of all ages have access to life lessons no matter what form of media they decide to look at. It is our job as millennials, and also the duty of parents, to make sure access to these shows is readily available. I love cartoons and I really think you should too.

Chapter 22:  I don’t know about you, but here’s chapter 22

The moment I walk out of the trial room, Lillie runs up and heals my pokemon again.  Yay!  Then it’s up the stairs I go…

At the top of the stairs, Lillie says “I can feel the strong power of the moon”, like she’s an ocean all of a sudden.  Then we stand on two platforms and each blow our respective flutes.  I turned my volume up for this and it turns out we both manage to sing a passable harmony without any apparent rehearsal.  Honestly, it makes me feel like Tori and Lillie have been missing their true callings throughout this game - if they’d just spent this whole time honing their gifts as flute prodigies, they’d be famous by now.  In any case, playing the two flutes at the same time must level Nebby up a few times, because it’s a lunala now.  And just to ruin the anime’s assertion that all pokemon can only say their own names, it turns out that the cry of lunala sounds like “mahina-pea!”  I was never particularly fond of the pokemon-say-their-own-names thing, but I’ve got to say, I’m not quite sure why that’s less plausible than “mahina-pea!”  Anyway, I had my volume turned up and it sounded mostly like “eaaaaa” to me.

Nebby then picks up Lillie and I and brings us into Ultra Space, which as it turns out, looks like an abandoned aquarium.  “How surprising.  It’s more beautiful than I would have expected…” says Lillie.  Lils, you either had really low expectations or you inherited your mum’s rose-tinted glasses for anything with the word “ultra” in its name.  This place is just creepy.

We soon run into Guzma, who calls us stupid for following him and Lusamine.  Not an unfair assessment.  “It’s all dark here… I’ve got no clue what’s going on,” he says.  I didn’t know Ultra Space held screenings of Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice.  

No, it turns out Guzma tried to catch a Nihilego, one of the ultra beasts floating around the area, but he ended up with his mind and body possessed and found out what fear felt like.  Gee, I wonder if this is foreshadowing something?  Spoiler alert: yes.

Then Lillie and I run forward and see Lusamine.  Lillie gets in an absolute killer of a speech here, which I just had to google so I could transcribe it in full; “Children... Children are not just THINGS that belong to their parents! Pokémon are not just THINGS that a Trainer can do whatever they want to!  I am alive!  Cosmog is alive!  We are not things for you to collect!  We're not made for you to just discard when you get bored with us!  That is terrible, Mother! You are terrible!"  

It’s a really powerful, well-earned moment; everything in the stories of Lusamine, Gladion and Lillie has paved the way to this confrontation, from the references to the experiments that Aether Paradise performed on both Nebby and Type:Null, to the fact that Lillie kept talking about how her mother chose her outfits for her back when she was dressed suspiciously like a Nihilego.  The fact that this whole segment was excluded from Pokemon: Ultra Sun and Moon is part of the reason why I was so underwhelmed by those sequels.  As it stands, in those games, Lusamine just seems like she gets forgiven at the end without either of her children calling her out for ignoring them.  Also, in those games Lusamine’s obsessed with Necrozma instead, so is it just a complete cosmic coincidence that she still ends up dressing Lillie like a Nihilego?

Sorry, you don’t come here to hear me going on tangents about which aspects of these games do or don’t work for me.  As we’ve firmly established by now, you come here to see if my pokemon die and make me burst into tears.  You monster.  You terrible, terrible person.

Just like the first time Lusamine fought me, the first pokemon she sends out is a clefable, while mine is Digit Al the magnezone.  This time, though, the clefable is surrounded by an aura which boosts its special defence, thanks to Lusamine’s Ultra Beast-melding powers.  Luckily, it only takes a couple of Charge Beam attacks before Digit Al’s special attack is high enough again to do serious damage with his Flash Cannon move.  Soon, the clefable has been beaten, having taken away a shade under half of Al’s health.

Lusamine sends out her bewear next, and since Al’s speed actually decreased a little when he evolved into magnezone, I decide the safest bet is to switch pokemon.  Enter Wash the toucannon, who has to contend with a bewear whose defense stat has been raised one stage by the creepy Ultra Beast power.  I decide to use my favourite strategy with Wash, which is to use Beak Blast and assume that the opponent  will burn itself by using a move that makes contact.

That doesn’t happen, though; instead, I am the witness to the most elaborate example of self-sabotage I’ve seen in quite a while.  The bewear uses Pain Split, a move which takes the current health of the user and the target and splits it so that each pokemon ends up with the average amount of health.  Since neither pokemon has taken any damage yet, though, Wash’s health stays exactly the same, while the bewear’s health gets lowered by a pretty reasonable chunk, since bewears in general have quite a bit more health than toucannons do.  Then Wash’s Beak Blast attack hits, doing even more damage, and on the next turn he’s able to use Drill Peck to finish it off.  So that’s a whole member of Lusamine’s party beaten without Wash taking a single hit point of damage.  Unexpected, but I am not complaining.

Next up, Lusamine sends out her mismagius (which has its speed ultra-beast-boosted), while I switch out Mr Nancy.  The mismagius uses… Pain Split?  Again?  Okay!  This time it doesn’t even seem to do anything - I wouldn’t be surprised if mismagius and Mr Nancy started off with the exact same number of hit points, because neither health bar seems to be affected by the move at all.  Then again, I didn’t get that long to look at mismagius’s health bar before Mr Nancy used Crunch and took out more than half her health.

To Lusamine’s credit, it looks like she does use Pain Split at tactfully advantageous moments sometimes; that’s what she uses this move, too, doing quite a bit of damage to Nancy while bringing mismagius’s health back to the point where my second Crunch attack doesn’t quite kill her.  On the following turn, though, she gets cocky and uses it again, and while that does leave Mr Nancy with less than half of his health left, it doesn’t heal the mismagius quite enough to keep the next Crunch from killing it.  That’s three of Lusamine’s pokemon down.  Cool!

Lusamine’s penultimate pokemon is a special-attack-boosted lilligant, and since Wash did so well in his last match, I decide to send him out once again.  This match-up is the least challenging so far; the lilligant tries using leech seed, and when that misses, Wash’s Beak Blast attack knocks it out in one hit.  Last pokemon now!

And… surprisingly, Lusamine’s milotic is just as easy!  Hedwig beats it in one Leaf Blade attack after it basically wastes a move using safeguard.  Sorry, sadists - none of my team are dead!

Time for a long old cutscene, everyone!  Lillie calls on the legendary pokemon to save Lusamine when it looks like she’s having a bit of a wobble; Lusamine celebrates being back in her normal form by saying Lillie is becoming beautiful; then the whole of Ultra Space starts shaking.  Fun fact; after Guzma starts saying “What now? What’s going on?” while the space we’re in shakes rapidly, I got distracted by something on the TV, and when I looked back thirty minutes later everyone was still looking around in panic in the middle of an earthquake and Guzma was still saying “what now?  What’s going on?”  Guess no-one thought to actually do anything in that time.

Then a bunch of Nihilego turn up and Lillie says “there are so many Nihilego!!!”  She’s right!  Good thing Nebby the lunala turns up to take us away.  Hapu pops up in between the unconscious Lusamine and Lillie says “Hapu… Is my mother…?” while looking at the two of them.  Bit oedipal, Lil, but whatever floats your boat.

Then the lunala asks me to try and catch it.  Uh, that’s sweet, but there aren’t really any open slots on my team at the moment, pal.  Please don’t take it personally, I’ll always like you as a friend.  It’s not you, it’s me.  I hope you’ll understand.  

I do have to catch it to move forward in the game, though, so I get Loki to use Thunder Wave and Foul Play and then lob a ball at it.  Since there aren’t any dead characters from franchises I’m in the fandom of called “Nebby”, I decide to call it “Remus” (because his nickname is Moony, do you get it) and send it to the PC box.  I like to pretend that I’ve set it free.

“Nebby, you belong with Tori now,” says Lillie; “She will be the one to raise you.  Just like any parent should raise their child.”  Uh, about that…  

Seriously, she keeps saying stuff like that for a full couple of minutes of tearful dialogue.  “See the world… Have battles against strong Pokemon where you can use your full power...That’s the kind of world Tori can share with you!”  All while Moony/Nebby is sitting on an island in poke pelago.  Way to make me feel guilty, Lillie!  It’s not my fault I’ve gotten attached to the team I’ve already got.  Granted, it IS my fault that I’m playing a game where I’m never allowed to withdraw any pokemon from a PC, but that’s neither here nor there.

Then as Lillie rushes off to be with her mum, Nanu turns up at the top of the Altar of the Moone to tell me that the Pokemon League has been built now.  Yay!  He offers to take me along with him, but I say no; I’m pretty sure there’s a section of Vast Poni Canyon I forgot to explore the first time round, and I don’t want to go to Mount Lanakila without every item I can get my hands on.  

I’ll leave all that for another day, though.  I’m knackered after all that.  End of Chapter 22.

Pokémon Go

Pokémon Go utilizes a concept known as augmented reality to incorporate features and characters from the popular game series into a smartphone application by tapping into the phones’ GPS capabilities, large processing power, and camera functions available. In the classic Nintendo Gameboy, N64, and GameCube games (which continues on modern Nintendo platforms), players controlled a protagonist character. The player has guided exploration as he/she collects wild Pokémon and battles other trainers. In many ways, the traditional Pokémon games are similar to other Nintendo role playing games like The Legend of Zelda in terms of structure, but they lack the intricate story and fantasy elements due to their target audience being generally younger.

Pokémon Go targets those that grew up playing the classic games by tapping into the nostalgia effect, but its game mechanics allow it to extend beyond that limited demographic and attract players of all ages. Rather than controlling a player and having a defined objective, players hunt the creatures in the “real world.” The game utilizes massive amounts of information to distribute creatures, gyms, and Pokéstops around the world. Pokémon can be captured against a “normal” animated video game screen or in “the real world” via the augmented reality setting which uses the phone’s camera to present the creature in the player’s “reality.” The gyms and Pokéstops are typically landmarks whose photos are incorporated into the game itself, regardless of whether the player is utilizing the augmented reality setting or not.

Unlike traditional games, Pokémon Go lacks a firm measurement of success, but it does offer various rewards. For example, walking specified distances allow players to earn candy or hatch eggs, both of which are necessary to catch all of the creatures. Gym battles allow players to earn Pokécoins, which can be used for in game purchases. Holding onto gyms earns players additional coins and also demonstrates some level of prestige to other players. These factors, combined with the game’s simple play, led to its widespread adoption by longtime fans and newcomers.

For many, Pokémon Go has become a necessity on long walks. The recent release of second generation characters will undoubtedly prolong its popularity among casual gamers. While this is the first high profile game of this type (similar games preceded it, but lacked the mainstream appeal of Pokémon), it certainly will not be the last. The Star Wars and Harry Potter franchises are currently being developed into augmented reality smartphone games. If nothing else, has demonstrated that there is a market for easy to use nostalgia based smartphone gaming.

Watchmen

Watchmen is an interesting case. The original graphic novel, written by Alan Moore, is a deconstruction of the comic book medium. Moore’s characters are tainted, dirty, and behave in a manner more similar to the “real world.” Operating out of self-preservation and often with their own goals in mind, these heroes are far removed from DC’s traditional flagship characters. It is a commentary on the folly of man as viewed through the eyes of superhumans. Further, Moore deemed his work unfilmable because he opposed the idea of turning his anti-establishment literature into a commercial property.

Of course, this notion was lost on Warner Bros., the parent company of DC comics. As movies featuring superheroes moved into the mainstream, Warner Bros. opted to adapt DC’s most notable graphic novel. Further underscoring the company’s lack of understanding for the material and complete disregard for its creator, Zack Snyder was chosen to direct the film. Snyder is well known for his flashy, commercial style and his emphasis on superficial presentation rather than character depth. In this respect, Snyder was the ideal choice to adapt the graphic novel because he delivered a film that perfectly presented the characters as they appear in the source material with very little deviation. He also lifted the scripting nearly verbatim. The result, was a beautiful but hollow film that plodded through its nearly three hours of runtime.

In a way, Snyder unwittingly produced a film that serves the exact opposite of its source material’s intent. Rather than provide deconstructionist commentary on the state of superhero films, Snyder’s Watchmen is the ultimate commercial adaptation. The film required little creativity as it was a paint-by-numbers adaptation that felt more like a remake akin to Gus Van Sant’s Psycho. Still, the film performed well enough to lead Warner Bros. to put Snyder in charge of the DC Extended Universe where his flair for style over substance has caused some issues.

Last week, my wife was craving hot wings. In our community, this pretty much made B-Dubs the only option. Neither of us had been there since the summer because we live in a college town and the pace is packed during football season. When we entered, it looked same with large TVs playing sports everywhere. Then we noticed the tablet sitting on the table.

 I’ve experienced tablets at other restaurants; they are usually used to enhance ordering. At B-Dubs, though, the tablets are also used for games. Of course, trivia games have been at Buffalo Wild Wings for as long as I can remember, but this was the first time that I recall having other options and individualized trivia at the table. Some games were absolutely free, others had fees for optional items. All of the games had the option of registering an account and earning rewards. My wife played a couple of games while we waited for our food.

 The thing is, I played on my phone while we waited. She would have done the same had the game tablet not been available. Buffalo Wild Wings, and others that have started supplying tablets, are capitalizing on the behaviors society has exhibited since smartphones became ubiquitous. Culturally, we are addicted to technology and have created a need to be entertained with games and devices on a regular basis.

How would a relationship between Alan and Clemont go as new step siblings? I was thinking about this for a while now and I wanted your thoughts on the matter :)

Pretty well, to be honest!

I haven’t thought too much on it, because in all honesty, whenever I think about Alan interacting with his step-siblings, my mind always jumps to Bonnie first. Bonnie gets very attached, very quickly (she declares that Alan is her Cool Big Brother, at which point Clemont is Offended™), and their interactions are downright adorable (at least in my mind). However, Alan does have a good relationship with his little step-brother as well, and that’s important to think about, too!

Truth be told, at first Clemont isn’t entirely sure how he feels about Meyer remarrying. Like, it’s not that he’s against it, per se; Sycamore is great, and Clemont likes him a lot, and this clearly makes Meyer happy, and that’s good, too. But when Meyer and Teresa first divorced, Clemont took it pretty hard. He was still fairly young—about six, maybe seven?—but he was right at that age where he understood enough to know that Meyer and Teresa were splitting up (and that Meyer was moving out), but that he didn’t understand quite enough to not realize right away that this didn’t mean that Meyer didn’t care about their family anymore, that he hadn’t stopped loving them, et cetera. Clemont was angry with Meyer for a while, and while he’s long since past that now, when it’s announced that Meyer and Sycamore are going to get married, there’s a part of Clemont that wants to take a pause on it. Either one of his parents remarrying re-seals the deal that Meyer’s and Teresa’s marriage is over For Good™, and wile Clemont knew that, there’s a part of him that hadn’t really, truly accepted it yet, despite how many years it had been. It’s a bit of an adjustment, but he takes to this one more quickly, and with a lot more grace than before. (I mean, he’s not six / seven anymore. He’s older now. He’s better equipped to handle it.) 

But all of this is to say that Clemont takes time to ease into new family situations. Meyer and Sycamore date for a while before they decide to get married, and as such Clemont has time to get used to Alan as a friend and person before getting used to him as a brother. This is especially true because Sycamore and Meyer waited a little while to announce to the kids that they actually were dating, and weren’t just friends. Alan figured it out long before they announced it (he’s fifteen / sixteen, and while he may be oblivious when people are romantically interested in him, he can put the pieces together when others are in relationships), but Clemont and Bonnie didn’t, and so Clemont didn’t even have to consider that Alan could potentially be his step-brother for a while. For a while, he was just a friend, and one of Professor Sycamore’s assistants (though he’s curious about that, because they look similar, and the way they interact reminds Clemont of his own relationship with Meyer, but …), and so that’s how they got to know each other first.

(Note: I’m personally still miffed at the PokéAni for not having Alan and Clemont know each other beforehand. I personally like the headcanon that Sycamore and Meyer have been friends for a very long time, and as such, Meyer actually met Alan shortly after Sycamore brought him home at the age of five. Clemont had just recently been born (and this is actually mentioned in Genesis), and as such Alan and Clemont should have known each other since Clemont was a baby. Likewise, Alan would have been living with Sycamore when Bonnie was born, too. These kids should have all already known each other—and maybe Alan could have babysat one or both of them at different points—but the PokéAni completely dropped the ball on that opportunity and I’m annoyed. Regardless.)

Things are slow-going at the start. Whereas Bonnie immediately takes a shine to Alan (and enjoys things like watching Ghibli movies with him while coloring in coloring books, or asking him personally to pick her up when Meyer wants to bring the kids by the lab so that she can ride over on Lizardon, even though it’s just a hop across the city), Clemont, while not shy per se, isn’t as much of a bursting ray of sunshine as his sister is. Likewise, Alan is pretty reserved, and doesn’t go out of his way to instigate friendships. Building on that, Alan still feels incredibly guilty about everything that happened during the Flare crisis, and this includes Clembot’s death. Sure, Clembot is fixed now, but his memory was permanently wiped. He’s different. This hit Clemont hard, and Alan feels responsible for this, given that it was his collection of mega evolution energy that caused everything to happen in the first place (or so he feels). Clemont, it should be noted, doesn’t at all hold Alan responsible for this—if there’s any one person he’s holding a personal grudge against, it’s Xerosic—but Alan still feels responsible, and so at one point he quietly apologizes to Clemont for it. Clemont is taken aback, and then hastily assures him that he doesn’t blame him at all … but that’s still something that happens, nonetheless. (And even if Clemont doesn’t blame him, that doesn’t stop Alan from blaming himself, so …)

But setting that aside, although a relationship between them is slow to form, it doesn’t make it less good. Their areas of scientific expertise are different—Alan prefers zoological and biological sciences pertaining to pokémon, whereas Clemont is interested in robotics and engineering—but they still find each other’s fields pretty interesting. Alan knows a lot about pokémon, obviously, and since he’s clearly a very, very skilled battler, it’s entirely possible that Clemont asks Alan for training or help at some point, so that he can strengthen his own skills as Gym Leader. Likewise, Alan is actually quite interested in Clemont’s inventions and area of expertise, and so when Clemont invents something new and wants to show it off to the rest of the family, Alan is genuinely interested and asks a lot of questions about it, which Clemont appreciates. (So it’s no “SCIENCE IS AMAZING!!!”, but it’s a definite, “That’s really interesting. Have you thought about adding an additional script to … ?” and building from there.) They can easily share their love of respective sciences with each other, and they do. They both teach and learn from each other, and help each other out, too. (I mean, Clemont usually has Clembot to help him when he needs an extra set of hands, but sometimes it’s nice to have another human set of eyes, too. Likewise, Clemont can be a good sparring partner whenever Alan wants to train, although Lizardon is admittedly too strong for Clemont’s pokémon to put up a fight. But that’s okay; there are other pokémon around the lab who could use the training.)

Once it’s announced that Sycamore and Meyer will get married, and Clemont takes a bit of time to himself to think about the fact that he’s going to be gaining a new step-father and a new step-brother (since, yes, Sycamore does adopt Alan officially before he marries Meyer), he realizes that he’s pretty okay and even happy for it. He likes Alan; they get along pretty well, and while it’s a bit odd to think that this will officially make him the middle child of the family, that’s okay, too. And on the flipside, Alan likes both Clemont and Bonnie a lot, and has already been thinking of them as little siblings for a while (“It’s about time” is his reaction when the marriage is announced), so of course he’s more than okay with it as well.

That said, step-brothers isn’t the only relationship they have. Alan becomes Kalos Champion, and with that he has his own Elite Four, of which Clemont ends up joining. This was actually on Alan’s suggestion. While the Elite are obviously more powerful than Gym Leaders, and while they do have more high-level responsibilities than Gym Leaders do (in the sense that they’re active members of the regional government, whereas Gym Leaders govern over certain areas of the region), they actually do less day-to-day work than Gym Leaders do. This means that they have more freedom to work on secondary jobs (e.g. despite being a member of the Elite Four, Siebold can still run his restaurant). Clemont has a passion for invention, and wants to dedicate at least the majority of his time to using science for the betterment of people and pokémon everywhere. Being a member of the Elite Four would give him more time to do that than being a Gym Leader would, and so when Alan became Champion and it came time for Wikstrom to retire, Alan suggested to Clemont that he should apply and try out for the position. Clemont was unsure at first, because he wasn’t sure that he was a strong enough trainer to make the cut, but Alan simply shrugged and said:

“We’ll see when you apply.”

Perhaps not the most inspiring words to the average listener, but it actually did inspire Clemont. By that point, he had known Alan for years; he knew that Alan was not going to cut him any breaks, but also that Alan wouldn’t make things unnecessarily difficult, either. He knew that if he applied for the position and won it, it would be because he had earned it. So he applied (alongside other trainers), and ended up winning the position. From then on, they were not only brothers, but also coworkers. Technically, Alan is Clemont’s boss, but Alan really doesn’t like pulling rank, and prefers to work with his Elite (and the Parliament, when they’re not being dickwagons) rather than over them. The two work really well together, and when there is work that would traditionally be handled by the leader of the Elite Four in regions with hierarchical system, Clemont typically takes it. (That is to say, he takes it if it’s legislative work. If it’s something “fun,” like going to international Champions’ meetings, Manon takes that position instead, because she’s all about stepping up if it’s a fun responsibility. She’s just not here for the paperwork aspect of it. =P)

Of course, there are some who would snidely say that Clemont got his position out of nepotism—that Alan chose him as an Elite simply because they’re brothers. But whenever that rumor comes up, Alan always says rather bluntly that if they question Clemont’s skill, then they can battle him. Clemont often gripes that Alan shouldn’t set up his challenges for him, but at the same time, he also has enough pride that he doesn’t want people thinking he earned his position out of favoritism, so … yeah, he usually does take the challenges that Alan sets up for him, whenever that rumor arises. After a time, people learn to accept that, no, Clemont really is just that good, and they leave him alone.

So yeah, Alan and Clemont have a pretty good relationship! It takes a bit more time than Alan’s and Bonnie’s, but that’s not because the boys don’t like each other. Rather, it’s just because they’re both pretty mild most of the time, and as such it takes a little more for that relationship to get off the ground. But that said, they come to love each other a lot (and I mean, they’re technically step-brothers, but they just think of each other as brothers), and they work pretty well as a team, too. Kalos is a better place with of them working as Champion and Elite Four member, respectively. :)
