Someone else was his first love interest.

A/N: "Rhys" is pronounced "reese." I didn't come up with that, btw. His crew did.

In the chilly autumn weather, passengers walked about Barrow-in-Furness Station. The leaves cluttering the ground crunched as folks stepped on them, awaiting the next passenger train.

A sharp whistle, reminiscent of the squawks of seagulls flying by coast line, went off in the distance, pulling in the passengers’ attention to the Indian-red tender engine approaching. She steamed into the station with a range of blue coaches with white trim, easing to a stop.

She was a Class 21, a class of engines dedicated to express passenger services. The sunlight reflected against the brass trim of her splashers and brass dome, giving it a gleaming shine. The oldest of the Class 21s greeted the awaiting passengers with a warm smile, as steam gently spewed from her chassis.

The weather was nice that day. There was no wind. Just the gentle breeze against her frames. It was like a soothing touch, which she appreciated.

Coming in the opposite direction, a small four-driver tender engine came by, hauling a goods train for someone else to take care of. Once he blew his whistle, the eldest Larger Seagull groaned. She would be foolish to not recognize it.

“Guid day, Coppernob,” she greeted through clenched teeth, trying to sound as nice as possible. Her crew reminding her to be nice to the elderly engine had become a daily routine, despite how arrogant and bossy he was. She didn’t need to turn the scolding into a daily thing.

Coppernob wasn't taking her forced greeting. “Don't treat me like a fool, young engine!” he hissed. “Such disrespect. You're better than that.”

“I wid if ye'd just go awa’,” she grumbled, “and didnae go around, gossipin’ aboot me.”

“It’s for the well-being of others, Alice,” he reminded her as her crew hushed whispers, telling her to knock it off. “We can't have your reckless behavior ruin the reputation and workflow of the Furness.”

Alice scoffed. “It’s always aboot thaim wit’ ye.”

“Bunny!” hissed her driver.

Before Coppernob reprimanded her, a Furness Railway 7 class steamed up to the platform adjacent to Alice’s. Unlike Coppernob, he had splashers, designed in a style similar to hers.

“Good day, you two,” he greeted. “Anything new I missed?”

“Nah! Nah!” Alice squawked out, immediately blushing out of embarrassment from the slip-up. She ignored the piercing glare from FR No. 3. “Nawthing new, Rhys.”

Rhys hummed, not convinced. A Furness engine would have to be a fool to not notice the conversation from kilometers away. And not to notice how furious the glare directed towards him was. However, he chose not to poke any further. Yet.

Alice’s guard blew his whistle, interrupting the thoughts going through the engines’ minds.

“Och!” she perked up. “Thon’s me. Guid-bye, Rhys!” With a quick whistle that resounded throughout the station, Alice departed from Barrow-in-Furness, heading north on her railway line, the Cumbrian Coast Line.

Once she was gone, Rhys sighed before glancing at Coppernob. “What is it you have against me?”

Coppernob didn't respond. Instead, he stormed off, leaving the other confused.

About a week later, Alice and Rhys met again but at Roose Station. The latter had finished telling a story that left Alice squawking.

There was just something about spending time with Rhys that comforted Alice, making her feel warm and appreciated. It was different to the way her sisters would comfort or check up on her every evening, especially if she’d had to defend one of them from one of the other Furness engines.

It was different, yet she couldn’t figure it out.

As she calmed down, a saddle tank engine pulled in, hauling a small freight train of steel rails, coming from the Barrow Haematite Steelworks.

“Diane!” exclaimed Rhys, noticing the black tank engine. “How’s the Steelworks going for you?”

Diane gave a quick smile to Alice, who smiled nervously, before replying. “Exhausting!” she exclaimed. “But it's good work!”

“Good to hear, dear! Good to hear!”

“You know, I’m surprised the old horse hasn't tried physically separating you both,” Diane noted. “He complains about you two whenever he runs out of things to whine about.”

Alice hummed, her freckled face crunching at the mention of Coppernob. “I din’ get why he diz’nae want me near Rhys. He diz’nae make sense aboot it.”

“Remember, dear,” Rhys assured. “He just… wants the best for you.”

The Larger Seagull frowned.“Well, he huz a funny way o’ showin’ it.”

Just then, her guard blew his whistle. With a heavy sigh, she bid farewell to the other two engines and promptly left.

Once she was gone, Diane shot a glare at Rhys. “Have you told her?”

The 7 class winced.

“Rhys!” she scolded.

“I know! I just-” He took a deep breath. “It’s too soon. We don't know when.”

“But it’ll be soon, Rhys!”

“I’ll tell her tomorrow, I promise!”

“You better!” she exclaimed before steaming off to Ravenglass, leaving her friend to go his way with the daunting thoughts in his head. His crew tried to soothe him, but it only made him feel more guilty.

…

“Alice! Stay away from that engine!”

Her safety valve was ready to burst. Earlier that morning, she fended off one of the Seagulls, her predecessors, up at Foxfield after seeing them pester one of her baby sisters. The utter annoyance those older engines could be.

And then they wonder why they could’nae get me and ma sisters tae ‘behave’ being the thought to go rampant in her mind after every confrontation.

“Bug’ aff! I'm no’ dealin’ wit’ ye today!” yelled Alice before storming off.

Coppernob chased her down. “Listen to me, young lass-!”

“Shut it!” she screamed. “Yer raps ma knittin’!”

“Watch your tongue-!”

“Or whit?” she taunted. “Whit'r ye goin’ tae dae? I'm no’ afraid o’ ye!”

“I want you to get away from that engine…” hissed Number 3, the words seething like painfully hot steam. “And you will do it as soon as you see him.”

“Ye cannae control me!” Alice argued. “Why is it thon when I’m finally doin’ better, it’s all wrong?”

“It wouldn't be wrong if you weren’t acting like that with him!”

Still furious, she looked at him confused. “Like whit? Whit’re ye implying?” she questioned.

Coppernob stared at her in horror, eyes going wide.

The look brought tension to Alice’s frame. “Copper-?”

“You can't even see it, can you?”

“See whit-?”

“You’re too far gone,” he mourned.

“Excuse me-?”

“Stay away from Rhys,” he hissed. “I don't want to find out that he’s broken the same way you are.” With that, he steamed away, returning to his work leaving a stunned Bunny behind.

“Broken…?”

…

That evening, Alice returned to her shed, only to find Rhys, resting in a siding. His crew were smoking cigarettes, unaware of the larger engine. Coppernob’s words had stung her to the core. She spaced out momentarily when Rhys called out for her.

“Alice! There you are,” he hollered, alerting his crew. They quickly climbed aboard into his cab. “Listen. I-”

“Am I broken?”

“...Pardon?”

“Am I broken, Rhys?” she asked again, looking Rhys straight into his eyes. “Coppernob said I’m broken.”

“What-?” He was dumbfounded as he approached the young Victorian engine. “No, of course not, Alice! Don't listen to Coppernob. His age is getting to him,” he reassured her.

“Okay…” was all she said before letting the silence overtake.

Her mood upset Rhys, making him rethink his choice. Should he? He didn't want to upset the young engine even further, but she needed to know.

It would be worse if she went about her life, not knowing what happened to her dear friend.

“Did… ye want tae say somethin’?” asked Alice after a while of silence. “Sorry if I-”

“I'm being withdrawn.”

Bronze pupils shrunk as her eyes went wide. “Ye're what-?”

“I'm being withdrawn, Alice. I don't know exactly when… but it might be soon,” he stated, carefully wording his sentences.

“Soon? How long have you known?”

“Alice-”

“How. Long?” she asked sternly. Her eyes burned in frustration and despair.

Rhys sighed with guilt. “A month.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“I don't want to break you.”

“Break me?” she scoffed, offended as tears brewed up and her voice began to crack. “I'm not fragile, Rhys!”

“But you're still growing out of your old behavior!” he exasperated as both crews held onto the brakes of their respective engines. Alice’s crew held extra tight, making sure they didn’t let go as their engine tended to be hostile, especially out of emotion. “Alice, please promise me you won't go back to your old self.”

“Rhys-!”

“Alice, please,” he begged. “Please, do it for your sisters. For Diane. For me. The board isn't going to tolerate it any further, and you know that.”

At the mention of her little sisters, Alice agreed. “I promise, Rhys,” she sobbed. “I promise.”

…

“I hope ye're happy,” Alice sneered. It was the following morning and she’d come across Coppernob at Barrow-in-Furness once again.

“What?” scoffed Coppernob.

“Rhys is bein’ withdrawn.”

Shock went through the older engine's frames. “Whatever for?”

“I dinnae ken. Go ask him yerself,” she sneered.

“Alice!”

“Dae me a favor and boil yer smokebox,” she hissed before storming off, jerking the coaches by accident. The sentient ones yelped and her passengers were startled as her crew scolded her severely, and Coppernob called out for her.

She blocked out the sounds of the world around her as her four driving wheels pushed her north towards Foxfield.

Later that week, Rhys was withdrawn. He was able to bid farewell to Diane but not Alice. Diane was the one to break the news to Alice.

Alice broke her promise.

And Edward made a realization.

Rhys, I’m so-

“Edward?”

Said engine jerked, accidentally jostling his trucks.

A few days had passed since he left the Steamworks with his pistons fully repaired. He’d spent a week waiting for the parts to arrive.

“Did you even hear what I was saying?” James asked again, concerned as the extra Troublesome Trucks Edward hauled yelped and complained.

“Guidness, naw,” Edward replied, guilt building on his panic. His freckled cheeks burned. “Och, dear. I’m sae sorry-!”

“Are you okay?” James interrupted. “You spaced out for a bit.”

“Er, somewhit?”

“We can stop-”

“Naw, naw!” he exclaimed. “No need to! It's just- You reminded me of something.”

“Something you'll tell me?” James asked with a glimmer of curiosity in his heterochromatic eyes.

“N-No’ today…” He looked down. “Sorry.”

“Oh…”

“B-But-!” Edward stammered, “what about your adventures on the Mainland, hm?”

“You're gonna have to be more specific, Ed,” chuckled James.

The smaller engine pieced together what he could recall from the conversation that had taken place. “That incident with the twins! Up in Whitehaven?”

James winced playfully. “Oh, what a mess that one was-”

As James continued to ramble on, Edward's mind focused in. But not after he processed what he'd realized.

I wis in love wit’ Rhys, and I didnae even ken…

AND then his twin baby sisters were built the following year and things are all good again, right...?

Well damn, i guess I did end up writing a story before the 1910s ovo ANYWAYS, first EoSR story of 2024 and it ended up being a ship-verse story but its angst-

i got to actually sit down and work on Edward's backstory a little more. It was EXTREMELY vague before so hopefully this starts adding up, especially for "You've Got Mail." (i'm a bit all over the place with my fics)

Being the oldest of a new generation is already a lot of pressure but how would it feel when its tradition for them to try to shape you in a way that is deemed appropriate in your railway. This usually works but Edward was different.

Notes:

Rhys had zero romantic interest in Edward.

Rhys' basis: 16 - FR Class A3 0-4-0 - built 1858 by W. Fairbairn & Co., Manchester - 1899 withdrawn

Introduced Diane (FR 17 "A5" class) and Old Coppernob (FR 3 "A2" class) sooner than I thought ovo Oh well.

The family relations on the Furness are a bit odd because the A2, A3, and A5 don't have a specific designer, just like the K2s. Just know that Edward isn't related to them. To my understanding, the Furness Railway 21s were designed by Sharp, Stewart & Co. Neither Pettigrew or Mason designed them. Same goes for said classes. Only the A5s were built by Sharp, Stewart & Co. but in the original Manchester location.

^ that being said, Diane and Edward are probably distant cousins for that reason, but Old Coppernob and Rhys aren't related to them. :p

Rhys translates to "ardor" in Welsh. Ardor means a strong intense feeling, which i think perfectly describes what engines feel when they're in love. :)

there was a lot of back and forth on previous love interests for these two. at one point, i considered Goldilocks to be James' first love interest but went against because i just thought it was weird and it would imply that Edward is a replacement for Goldilocks. I did not want that so i scrapped it.

Edward and Old Coppernob are basically the failed unintentional attempt of a healthy father-son relationship. They're both at fault for this. (yes, Edward has daddy issues. it just kinda happened but it also feels like it makes sense considering his role as the oldest and the issues he has)

Phases of Skeletor’s Life

Sources are what I’ll call “the main 80s continuity”. This includes both Filmation cartoons, mini-comics packed with the action figures near the end of the line but not before, the newspaper comic and The New Adventures of He-Man.

PHASE 1, Backstory. Skeletor was either a demon from another dimension who always had a bare skull for a head, or King Randor’s brother Keldor. If the latter, his experiments with magic caused him to uncontrollably cross spacetime (”The Search for Keldor”).

He studied magic under Hordak (making it possible that his extra-dimensional demon homeland was Horde World, but no writer has explicitly said so) and arrived/returned to Eternia with his invasion fleet. As the Horde conquest failed, Skeletor was stranded behind enemy lines at the end of a half-successful commando mission to steal the King and Queen’s twins (She-Ra, “The Secret of the Sword”/”Reunions”)

Between the Horde invasion landing and its failure, they made Snake Mountain their base. Skeletor convinced Zanthor, a member of the Council of the Wise, to betray its Golden Discs of Knowledge to him, using knowledge their contained to shape the Snake Mountain base. Zanthor was banished to a phantom dimension by Zodac and the rest of the Council of the Wise, then they disbanded. (He-Man episode “The Golden Discs of Knowledge”)

Besides Hordak any other named Hordesmen in the invasion force, and briefly Zanthor, Skeletor’s earliest allies were Beast Man, Mer-Man, Trap Jaw (AKA Kronis), Tri-Klops and Evil-Lyn. The 2002 continuity showed the order they joined Keldor (Beast Man -> Kronis / Tri-Klops or vice versa -> Evil-Lyn, Mer-Man implicitly last) but this one didn’t. Fisto also held his forest domain as a fief from Skeletor for some time, defecting when Prince Adam was 16. (He-Man episode “Fisto’s Forest”)

PHASE 2-1 (Filmation Season 1)

Skeletor and Beast Man reassemble the Evil Warriors. They spend many months on various schemes to take over Eternia, though rarely in the full group of six. Prince Adam is 18.

PHASE 2-2 (Filmation Season 2)

New Evil Warriors join: Clawful, Webstor, Whiplash, Kobra Khan, Two Bad, Spikor and Modulok.

PHASE 2-3 (Filmation She-Ra)

Skeletor meets Hordak again. They briefly team up (”Secret of the Sword”/”Battle for Brightmoon”), then fight whenever they meet (”Gateway to Trouble”, “My Friend My Enemy”, “Of Shadows and Skulls”, “Horde Prime Takes a Holiday”, Christmas Special). Modulok soon defects to the Horde. Prince Adam turns 20 or 21. Skeletor, Beast Man and Trap Jaw are last seen together assaulting the Bee People’s Hive starship (She-Ra, “Assault on the Hive”).

PHASE 3, honorary Snake Man and new Evil Warriors

One day when only he and Kobra Khan are at Snake Mountain, Skeletor goes spelunking into unexplored caves beneath Snake Mountain. King Hiss is released from mystic confinement. Rattlor and Tung Lashor are summoned from the Etherian Horde to join him. Hypothetically, Skeletor and King Hiss are independent allies living together and each planning to backstab the other when He-Man and Hordak are defeated, but all the old Evil Warriors stop coming to Snake Mountain and the pair act like co-commanders of the Snake Men. King Hiss manages to free Sssqueeze and Snake Face from where they were mystically banished. The robots Blast Attack and Twistoid are added to this group. (mini-comics “King of the Snake Men”, “Snake Attack”, “The Ultimate Battleground!”, “Revenge of the Snake Men”, “Energy Zoids”. Alternate telling in “Vengeance of the Viper King” newspaper comic.)

Eventually the Snake Men are banished again. Either before or after this, Skeletor summons Scare Glow and Ninjor from across space and time to serve him. This doesn’t seem to work out long-term. (”The Search for Keldor” mini-comic, “Ninjor Stalks by Night” newspaper comic)

With the Snake Men gone, Skeletor summons alien mercenaries Saurod and Blade. Evil-Lyn and Beast Man return to him, though at one point they also try to run away from him and conquer Blade’s home planet Merrian.

PHASE 4, The New Adventures

Some time later, Skeletor has become a cyber-lich, with advanced prosthetics all over his remaining flesh.

He lives at Snake Mountain with none of the Evil Warriors except a tribe of humans who wear ram hides. He also has a different staff from the old Havoc Staff.

He makes his way onto a starship from Primus and joins the Mutants of Denebria led by Flogg. (New Adventures, “A New Beginning”)

On the moon of Nordor, he finds a power crystal that changes his body/armor again. (New Adventures, “Sword & Staff”)

He falls in love with a Mutant woman, Crita.

His beloved Crita schemes her way into a position of power independent of Flogg as the Queen of the Gleanons of planet Necron. When a peace treaty is signed between the rulers of Primus and Flogg’s Mutants, he and Crita do not abide by it and attack He-Man and his friends. He-Man knocks them into a small spacecraft and sarcastically officiates their wedding before tossing it into orbit. (”The Final Invasion”)

That was the last we saw of him before continuity reboots. Really.

The voice cast is talented. Jack Quaid lent his voice to Peter Parker / Lizard in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and more prominently as Ensign Bradward "Brad" Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks. This series marks one of Alice Lee's first voice roles, apart from voicing a character in Mickey Mouse Funhouse. She has played characters in TV series since 2009. Ishmel Sahid has been working on similar series since around the same time. In an exclusive interview with Lee and Sahid, both said they were excited to see fanart, but also said it was challenging to maintain the high energy of Lois and Jimmy. Both noted the writers and producers helped them. They described how they had to adjust their speaking voices to the characters and explained the flair they gave each character through the voices.

One member of the voice cast, Kari Wahlgren, is well-known. She voiced Martha Kent, and young Clark Kent, in this series. She has done dubbing of anime characters since 2002, and has voiced iconic characters in Western animation. This includes Electronique in Kim Possible,  Suzy Johnson in Phineas and Ferb, Tigress/Sheena in Carmen Sandiego, Callie in the somewhat underrated Cleopatra in Space, and Zatanna in DC Super Hero Girls. She also lent her voice to characters in Sym-Bionic Titan, Young Justice, Infinity Train, Dota: Dragon's Blood, The Ghost and Molly McGee, The Owl House, Velma, and OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes.

Wahlgren is voice actor powerhouse in her own right. There are few voice actors, in the cast, who have voiced as many characters as Wahlgren. One exception is Zehra Fazal. She is recognized for voicing Nadia Rizavi in Voltron: Legendary Defender and Halo/Violet in Young Justice. She also voiced Faraday and Shannon in Craig of the Creek, Mara in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Zahra and Sabrina in Glitch Techs, General Yunan in Amphibia, and Tassia in Dragon Age: Absolution.

Others have voiced just as many characters. Chris Parnell voiced characters in Gravity Falls, BoJack Horseman, Elena of Avalor (Migs), Samurai Jack, and Dogs in Space (Ed). Debra Wilson previously voiced characters in Cannon Busters (Lady Day), Final Space (Quinn's mother), The Casagrandes, The Owl House, Star Trek: Prodigy, Black Dynamite, and The Proud Family. Catherine Taber voiced her share of animated characters including Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Lori Loud in The Loud House. Lucas Grabeel voiced characters such as Jiku in Elena of Avalor and the haughty scammer Julian in Spirit Riding Free.

The voice cast includes other prominent voice actors. Vincent Tong voiced characters in 16 Hudson, Ninjago, LoliRock (Mephisto), My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Polly Pocket, and The Dragon Prince (Prince Kasef). André Sogliuzzo voiced King Bumi in Avatar: The Last Airbender and King Verago in Elena of Avalor. He also voiced characters in Samurai Jack, Star Wars Rebels, and The Owl House. Darrell Brown previously lent his voice to characters in Gabby's Dollhouse and Madagascar: A Little Wild. Azuri Hardy-Jones voiced Jade in Deer Squad. Kenna Ramsey voiced various characters in video games.

Apt viewers may recognize Jake Green, Laila Berzins, Jesse Inocalla, David Errigo Jr., Max Mittleman, and Andromeda Dunker. Errigo Jr. is known for voicing Ferb in the 2020 film, Candace Against the Universe. The film is the most recent iteration of the Phineas and Ferb franchise. Inocalla voiced Soren in The Dragon Prince. Berzins voiced characters in indie animations such as Satina, Wild Card: Shuffled, and Monkey Wrench.

Other well-known individuals voice bit characters in the seventh episode: Kimberly Brooks as Jalana Olsen, Osric Chau as Lewis Lane, and Lauren Tom as Leader Lois. Brooks is best-known as Princess Allura in Voltron: Legendary Defender and the rough-and-tough Jasper in Steven Universe. Some may remember Chau as the one who voiced the villainous computer hacker known as The Troll in Carmen Sandiego. Tom voiced Mop Girl in recently ended a mature animation, Disenchantment, and Amy Wong in currently airing Futurama, another mature animation. This differs with actors such as Reid Scott, Joel De La Fuente, Melanie Minichino, and Michael Emerson (as Brainac). All four do wonderful voice work on this show, but have almost exclusively, or exclusively, previously done live-action TV series.

Warner Bros. Animation is a subsidiary of the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate. This subsidiary produced Velma, Harley Quinn, DC Super Hero Girls, Young Justice, Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans, Justice League, Static Shock, Superman: The Animated Series, and Batman: The Animated Series. Rooster Teeth, another subsidiary, is recognized for RWBY, its flagship series. The CRWBY is doing all they can to ensure RWBY gets a tenth season. The RWBY superhero crossover film (part 2) is coming out this fall. It may include a version of Superman, like part one.

A largely-circulated spreadsheet in which people anonymously described their conditions in animation studios mentions Warner Bros. Animation. In one entry, Warner Bros. Animation is said to have too much work and treat workers badly. However, it acknowledges that each production is different. People on Glassdoor praised Studio Mir for high-quality projects and talented colleagues. Others were more critical.

Whatever the second season of My Adventures with Superman brings, the number of fans will continue to grow (including the  10,000+ fans across two subreddits), regardless of the corporate decision to air it on Adult Swim rather than Cartoon Network, possibly because of "dark moments" in the series. Hopefully the next season goes above and beyond what the first season delivered. Even so, I can't rate this series high enough, as it is just as strong as Harley Quinn and superior in many ways to the sometimes-convoluted Young Justice and mediocre Velma.

My Adventures with Superman can be streamed on Max or Spectrum. It can also be purchased on Prime Video, either as an entire season or individual episodes, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, or Microsoft Store.

If we can go to the 50s, have the characters become teenagers again and forget stuff (except for Jug who is now a 26 year old stuck in a 16 year old’s body) then we may as well just go back to 4x17 and undo the thing that lead to all of this crumbling. There are no rules of what can and can’t be done at this point.

One of the (many) things that annoy me this season is how they tease us with Bughead crumbs to keep us invested but never more than one episode in a  row. They give us Tabitha in Rivervale being jealous of Betty and then nothing, they give us Bughead making out to save the universe and everyone forgets what happened and we go back to Riverdale. They give us Bughead working together for an episode and Jughead getting a flash of their “best of” moments but it’s never followed up on. Now in this last ep we have Ethel yell at writer!Jughead about still loving Betty and again I suppose next ep we get nothing (though at least this was Jughead in a different universe who may need to face Ethel’s wrath there).

I have no doubts of Bughead being endgame and I’m not oppose to these crumbs but it’s annoying that they keep giving us these hints just to then pretend they didn’t.

I absolutely do! Thank you for asking because now I get to push my Into the Ring Appreciation Agenda...

INTO THE RING (Also called Memorials)

This one has similar slice-of-life vibes and a VERY FUN HEROINE who IMO has a similar chaotic energy to Na Hee-do. Frustrated with her career prospects, Goo Se-ra runs for local office... almost on a whim. She also reunites with a childhood friend and they have a very lovely romance that doesn't suffer from a third-act breakup and they show a lot of casual intimacy that warms the heart.

2. RUN ON

This one is currently on my list to rewatch because I loved the central romance so much, but it's also one I highly recommend because of how well developed and portrayed the friendships are. It also ticks the vibe boxes of having a sporting element although to a lesser extent than 25/21, and while there's a lot of emotional content it's frequently balanced with humour and the ending is both satisfying and uplifting. (BONUS: contains respectful ace/aro rep!)

3. MAD FOR EACH OTHER

This is a shorter one that I was pleasantly surprised by when it aired last year. There’s definitely some heavy emotional stuff in there but I think it matches the 25/21 vibe in that it has some beautifully nuanced human experience content and the ending is very uplifting.

and if you’re willing to try one that’s still airing I recommend LOVE ALL PLAY! I only started this one a few days ago myself but I powered through the available episodes and I’m really enjoying the development of the relationship between the two leads.

18) What are your hobbies?

The main one is playing videogames, but I also like reading books and comics, watching the occasional TV series/animated media when on the train and taking a walk!

It sound more than it actually is, because in truth, since I'm stuck at home because at home and videogames are one if not the only thing that stimulates me enough, gaming is the main thing I do in my free time.

...not gonna lie, my life feels pretty empty at the moment.

Ever since I started working and am away from all my friends, my life feels more hollow than ever.

Other hobbies I technically have but almost never end up doing are creating art, mainly writing and gamedev!

But I can barely do them due to lack of time, energy and executive dysfunction, and it's one of the most frustrating things ever.

I can barely write, I haven't worked on any games after the one I made on the first months of Covid and while I do want to draw or paint for the heck of it, most of the fun I have doing it is being in company while creating, so doing it alone feels a bit pointless.

20) Favorite book?

May be kinda cheating, but I loved reading the Metal Gear Solid 4 and Halo Reach novelizations! Especially the MGS4 one, I consider it to be better than the actual game.

As for books that aren't adaptations, hmm.

I'll admit I don't remember much of the book I read after a while passes (then again I don't remember much of anything), but honestly I haven't felt hooked into a book for a long time.

Granted, while I am reading more now that I live near a library I'm not reading as much as I want or should, so...

I'll accept any reccomendations if there's a book you'd like to share!

21) Favorite show?

Again, I'm not one who tends to rewatch/replay stuff, but some of my favorite shows are Phineas & Ferb, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Ducktales 2017 and the She-Ra reboot!

Yeah, most of the stuff I watch is animated.

I started watching Heartstopper after hearing about it though. I'm in only a few episodes in, but it's pretty cute!

22) Favorite movie?

Movies are probably the type of media I watch the least due to their length requiring too much attention on my part, but some of my fave movies are Revenge of the Sith due to it being like a insanely fun rollercoaster ride if the rollercoaster was poorly made in CGI and on fire, Emperor's New Groove since it's the funniest thing Disney has ever made, and Spaceballs because it's an hilarious parody and Star Wars if it was actually good

Besides non-comedy movies, A Silent Voice really hooked me for a few months back in the day.

Recently I also watched the first Sonic Movie since it came on Netflix and it was way better than I expected!

Too bad I missed the sequel at the movies..

The series aired on KBS2 from October 5 to November 10, 2022, every Wednesday and Thursday at 21:50 (KST) for 12 episodes.

A murder case like no other lands on Jin Jung's desk. As he begins to investigate, he finds something strange about it. Against all limits as a prosecutor, he pushes the case forward. But public outrage and pressure from his superiors bring the case to an abrupt end.

Episode 1

We are introduced to Jin Jung, a prosecutor with bad manners and a history of delinquency. He occasionally resorts to underhanded tactics instead of adhering to the accepted procedures of the legal system. However, he also possesses a strong sense of justice and conscience. He fights for the helpless and against evil, delivering justice in form of an eye for an eye.

The first episode starts with CEO Kim Hyung-Kyun and his associates laughing at the corruption and incompetence of the prosecution. However, their celebration is short-lived as police officers arrive to arrest him.

Jin Jung arrives, whistling carefree. He helps the CEO out of trouble and pretends to flatter him to obtain important evidence. Despite being caught, the CEO ordered his goons to attack the prosecutor. However, they do not appear. He can defeat all the attackers using a kendo stick. Nevertheless, he is unable to arrest Hyung-Kyun because his superior, Shin A-Ra, has instructed him not to overstep his boundaries so that the perpetrator can escape.

At the prosecution office the next day, A-Ra scolds Jin Jung. She is frustrated and wonders, how he even got his job. He remembers his elementary school days. He witnessed his teacher accepting bribes and decided to teach her a lesson. Then he wanted to be a swordsman, so he joined the kendo club in high school. Although he possessed exceptional abilities, he was overlooked in favour of the son of a kendo athlete. That was the point were he decided to become a prosecutor. A-Ra gave up and simply told Jin Jung to write an apology letter.

Jin Jung returns to his office after receiving the scolding. Lee Chul-Gi, Jin Jung's loyal and trusty investigator, enters his office with new case files. Jin Jung is initially dismissive of the seemingly trivial cases until he comes across a murder case in the files. The delivery man, who has already confessed, allegedly killed a woman in her home.

Jin Jung meets the suspect, a delivery guy who was discovered looking bloody at the scene. The suspect recalls the incident with no guilt and allegedly killed the victim because he found her rude. Unfortunately for Jin Jung, the case is quickly wrapped up because the suspect confessed. However, he wants to investigate further because he has a bad feeling about the case. He thinks the crime is too perfect and something is off. Jin Jung watches as the suspect is taken away.

He bumps into A-Ra, who reminds him to attend their team dinner. As the meeting time approaches, he attempts to make an excuse. However, A-Ra knows him too well and is waiting for him outside his office. As a result, he is forcibly dragged to the venue.

Jin Jung does not participate in any activities and only eats. Lee Jang-Won, the deputy chief of the central prosecution office, calls him out. A-Ra makes Jin Jung leave, but his boss Kim Tae-Ho, the head prosecutor of the crime department, gets the blame. Jin Jung mutters that he did not want to come to the event. During a chance encounter with another guest, Jin Jung receives a clue about the murder case. He discovers that the suspect is left-handed, but the murder weapon was used with the right hand. Jin Jung rushes out to confirm his suspicions, much to the annoyance of A-Ra.

During the team dinner, the deputy chief became intoxicated and began to lose his temper. Tae-Ho reminded him of his upcoming promotion, preventing him from causing a scene. Once the inebriated deputy chief departed, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.

The following day, Jin Jung continues his investigation by questioning the detective in charge of the report. However, the detective is uncooperative, making excuses and telling him to stay behind his desk. Jin Jung accuses the detective of taking a bribe, and things nearly escalate into a fight before he gets kicked out. During the scuffle, Jin Jung manages to snatch the detective's phone, which they run for testing.

Upon returning to his office, Jin Jung is surprised to find A-Ra waiting for him. She orders him to wrap up the murder case, stating that everything is straightforward and questioning why he is even waiting. Tae-Ho arrives just in time to settle the matter. After receiving the case file, Tae-Ho allows Jin Jung to continue his investigation. Jin Jung investigates and discovers that the detective in charge is suspicious, so he kidnaps him. Jin Jung appears threatening as he confronts the detective, while Chul-Gi swings a hammer. The detective is in danger of being hit, but Chul-Gi swings too hard and the hammer flies behind him. Chul-Gi tries again, but misses the detective's hand by a few inches. The detective finally gave a written statement after confessing in fear.

The following day, Jin Jung revisits the suspect and questions his motives regarding his written confession. The suspect maintains his innocence. The public is demanding justice and criticizing the prosecution for their incompetence. Deputy Chief Lee lectures Tae-Ho, urging him to quickly conclude the murder case. Tae-Ho authorized Jung's investigation due to his own suspicions, particularly regarding Deputy Chief Lee's involvement.

Jin Jung and Tae-Ho were removed from the case, which was reassigned to Oh Do-Hwan, an ambitious prosecutor in the same department. Jin Jung shared his suspicions with Do-Hwan, but the latter dismissed them. It appears that Do-Hwan is willing to do whatever it takes to advance quickly, even if it means prosecuting the wrong person and allowing the real murderer to go free. In a flashback, it is revealed that Do-Hwan made a deal with Deputy Chief Lee. He even negotiated a higher reward for himself to do the dirty work. The case quickly goes to court, and an innocent suspect is wrongfully sentenced to 20 years in prison.

A-Ra confronts Do-Hwan and accuses him of being corrupt human being, despite his talent as a prosecutor. Jin Jung arrives as Do-Hwan paints a dark picture of the prosecutor's office, a place where only those with money and connections control the power. He describes it as a rotten place where the righteous Jin Jung doesn't fit in. Jin Jung rebuts, telling him that he knows the truth, but is just playing dumb. He punches Do-Hwan immediately.

Escaping Twin Flames: Internet cults are spooky and the fact that people are not taught lateral reading so they're on the rise is just as spooky. Forcing people to be trans is horrifying. 6/10

One Piece Live Action Show: Dropped after a few episodes. The acting is corny but the visual effects are fine, at least as far in as I watched. 4/10

Bee and Puppycat: Part 1: Put on hold after Episode 12. I don't understand how the voice acting and animation got worse when they switched from an indie production to a big scale one. Bee in particular sounds so tired and blase in almost every line delivery that it makes her sound bored which makes me feel bored watching this. ???/10

The 80s First Ones must have been from Eternia

She-Ra’s Sword of Protection first appeared in the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe episode “Origin of the Sorceress”, when Teela-Na, the current Sorceress, tells He-Man how she discovered Castle Grayskull as an ordinary 15-year-old.

(The woman in bird garb is Kuduk Ungol, the previous Sorceress.)

At that time, both the Power Sword Prince Adam started using to turn into He-Man when he was 16 and the Sword of Protection were unused relics in the keeping of the guardian of Castle Grayskull. They appear identical except for the gemstone set into the latter.

Fast forward to She-Ra Episode 21, “The Stone in the Sword”. Adora has been using the Sword of Protection to turn into She-Ra for a while when one of Hordak’s weapons cracks the gemstone. She can no longer become She-Ra, even though her brother Adam becomes He-Man without a magic stone.

Adora goes to Light Hope for help. Light Hope says “You must seek the help of the First Ones. They are the living spirits of the founders of Etheria. Only they can restore your powers.” So Adora descends into the Etherian Underworld, where she meets the First Ones.

Since they’re “spirits”, we don’t know what they looked like when they had bodies. They repair the stone, and with it the power of She-Ra. Left completely unexplained is how the founders of ETHERIA are the only ones who can fix a magic sword from Castle Grayskull on ETERNIA.

I think the only logical explanation is that they brought it with them from elsewhere when they founded Etheria. If it came from the same place as the Power Sword, it could have an enchantment on it that teleported it back to where it came when the spell’s contingency happened. That’s how it ended up with Kuduk Ungol or one of her predecessors after belonging to the First Ones on Etheria.

Supa Team 4 Spoiler-Filled Review

Supa Team 4 is a computer-generated superhero action-comedy series. Malenga Mulendema is the series creator and co-executive producer. Trigger Fish Animation Studios, known for the recent animated series Kiya and the Kimoja Heroes and Kizazi Moto: Generation Fire, and various television specials and films.

Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-fifth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on August 21, 2023.

This series shows its Zambian roots from the get-go, beginning in Zambia's capital, Lusaka. A reporter, Geoffrey (voiced by Sne Dladla) talks about a mysterious tornado striking the city. Former secret agent Mama K (voiced by Pamela Nomvete) brings together all the protagonists. They include a gutsy and agile girl with hair parted into two box-like sections named Temwe Chiti (voiced by Kimani Arthur) who is a bit of a juvenile delinquent" and troublemaker; a smart, organized, and creative techy girl named Komana Mwinga (voiced by Zowa Ngwira); a brainy, industrious, athletic, and tall girl named Zikomo "Zee" Phiri (voiced by Nancy Sekhokoane); and a physically strong, calm, and wise girl with an afro tied at the top named Monde Wamunyima (voiced by Namisa Mdlalose). Each has their own superhero names. Temwe is T-Mlilo, Komana is K-Bongo, Zee is Za-Mpezi, and Monde is M-Kozo.

In some ways, Supa Team 4 is like other teen superhero series in recent years (DC Super Hero Girls, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, and Young Justice) and classic series from the 2000s (Static Shock and My Life as a Teenage Robot). It comes at a time there are is growing number of Black animated series, like Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, My Dad the Bounty Hunter, Craig of the Creek, Central Park, Iwájú (upcoming), Iyanu: Child of Wonder (upcoming), and Karma's World. The latter series ended in September 2022. There are indie animated series focusing on Black stories such as Defenders of Alodia, Jumbie, Captain Zero, LimeLight, and Diver: The Animated Series. Most are in development or on hiatus like Diver.

The difference with this series is that its stories are completely Zambian and said to be "something special for Zambians." Even so, it is relatable to everyone, like Kizazi Moto, a series primarily produced by the same animation studio. In both cases, the shows bode well for the development of the African animation industry. Supa Team 4, like Kizazi Moto, emphasizes the importance of family, Monde is close to her sister Marjory (voiced by Celine Tshika), sports (through Zee), and political corruption. City residents call for Mayor Sikazwe (voiced by Sne Dladla) to resign, which the villain exploits. Temwe's love of eating food may be relatable.

Like any other superhero series, there is a need for them to keep their real identities secret, even from those that they know well. This is accomplished through their transformation into superheroes wearing specialized super suits ala magical girl style. Unlike any other transformations I've seen, each transformation has upbeat music and a distinctive flair, making it stand apart.

All four girls are chosen after being watched for weeks. It echoes Jerry's reasoning for bringing in Sam, Alex, and Clover in Totally Spies! or "choosing" the Mew Mews  in Tokyo Mew Mew New. Different from that series, Mama K lets the girls choose whether to be superheroes. The girls in that series were experimented on without their consent and forced into the superhero role. In this series, the girls have gadgets to entrap and defeat villains. Temwe's ribbon wand reminds me of Mega Pearl's weapon in Steven Universe Future or Cure Parfait's rainbow ribbon in Pretty Cure.

There is one other similarity between Tokyo Mew Mew New and Supa Team 4: the importance of preserving the environment. Komana builds a carbon-capture machine in the first episode, allowing her to capture a tornado. She receives a scholarship from Lee Magedzee (voiced by John McMillian), owner of a local energy company, Magedzee Power Corporation (MPC). He is impressed by her portable invention. It purifies carbon dioxide into safe carbon-based fuels. He later praises her solar-powered "smart art" that can charge phones and other devices.

Having an A.I. like T.O.M.I. (voiced by Thabe Ntebe), otherwise known as Technical Operations Management Interface, is not unique. Other series have featured A.I. as well. This A.I. is not a be-all-end-all. It is only one of the tools they use against villains, such as Storm Drain, Locus Pocus, Snap Back, Alley-Gator, Trash Man, Otherwise, I liked the role of Mama K's goat, Chomps (voiced by Gary Martin) throughout the series. It is even revealed that he is a secret agent!

Through the series, there is a push-and-pull of responsibilities to family and school. Temwe manifests this by her often run-ins with the school principal, Nkwashi (voiced by Abubakar Salim), who has it out for her. She gets suspended when Nkwashi thinks her ribbon wand might hurt someone. She later learns how to use her "hangry power" during battles rather than provoking Nkwashi's ire during the school day.

The series encourages viewers to believe Nkwashi is the shadowy villain, Bad Magz (voiced by John McMillian). There are hints. He has files on every student at Kamiji Secondary School. In the final episode, Temwe thinks that Nkwashi vanished like smoke. She is convinced he is the villain, after he declares she can't volunteer with Mama K (cover for their secret activities) if she fails a chemistry test. The girls don't buy her hair-brained explanation.

The series opening, first shown when the second episode begins, makes each episode pop. While the series music is by Ben Onono. Sampa the great does the theme music, in collaboration with Mag 44. It has to be one of the best opening sequences that I've seen in some time, and I watch a lot of anime series.

Following the first episode, Supa Team 4 turns to subjects like nanotech. The team reverse engineers some nanotech locusts for their own purposes. The obsession with popularity, homesickness (in the case of Monde and Marjory), garbage/rubbish collection, vlogging, value of art, education, and mind control are other topics. In the first half of the series, the villain is a shadowy figure not unlike the character of the same name in OK K.O.: Let's Be Heroes!. But, this person is more malicious.

He wants everyone in the city to lose electric power. This leads to random power cuts (load shedding) to compensate for electric energy loss after the hydroelectric dam is damaged. This allows Lee Magedzee to step in, declaring his wind farm will be upgraded and generate more electricity. At the same time, the villain exploits anger against the mayor for his own benefit. All the while, people hanker for more solar power.

Mama K has her own secrets. Formerly, she headed a crime-fighting team at the Intelligence Agency for Zambia (IAZ) and had the code name of Mkango. She, a computer expert named Rhino/Chipembele/Uncle Chi and a confidante (and inventive genius) named Towela, worked to bring down Chusi.

Even worse, this villain steals top-secret information, uploading the information to his mind, and destroys the original documents. As a result, the government didn't have access to their own intelligence! This ends sadly. Chusi used their device, the Brainstorm, to wipe the memories of Towela. It gives her amnesia. He also blinds Chi. Mama K is alone. The four protagonists cheer her up, convincing her they can all take down Chusi, also known as Bad Magz, together.

The Supa Team 4 season one finale blows everything wide open. Chusi gets, thanks to Professor Greenthumbs, some of the tech that Team 4 is using. Principal Nkwashi says that his own goal is to help Temwe. He is worried that she will become like him. He was a feisty and spirited kid who lacked focus. The four team members follow a Baobab tree to an abandoned mine. Greenthumbs deactivates their super suits, takes away their weapons, and pulls them into an underground lair! The biggest reveal is not that Nkwashi isn't the villain, but that Chusi is Lee Magedze!

This unexpected twist shows how devious the writers and animators were, leading the audience to believe that the Principal was the villain. The fact that Lee Magedze is the villain means he has the duality of being a Black leader who is trying to increase people's power and trying to take it away. My prediction is that he will attempt to unseat the mayor. The citizens would elect him if he ran on a Black empowerment platform. Once in office, he will have even more power, as the villain and the mayor.

There are reports that Supa Team 4 will have at least 25 episodes. In fact, the Director of Production at Triggerfish Animation Studios, Mike Buckland, confirmed a second season, writing "hold your breath for Season 2, because it just gets better from here." Such a season will undoubtedly continue to center on African stories, without any White characters, and remain relatable to Black girls and Zambians. The series may lean more into romance as well, as Zee's friend, Chipo Hamoonga (voiced by Daniel "KStar" Lyapa), has a crush on her, and a boy has a crush on Temwe.

Furthermore, the series may influence more Africans to tell their stories through animation, as they may see themselves, and their experiences represented, even as some Zambians claimed the character accents weren't authentic. Supa Team 4 is indicative of how collaboration is important in Africa, as the animation industry deals with many challenges, that "anyone from anywhere can be a superhero," and the great storytelling traditions on the continent. At the same time, I'm glad that the series was renamed from the original title ordered in 2019, Mama K's Team 4, as the current title makes the less about Mama K and more about the team.

Significantly, the series is dubbed in isiZulu. Mama K voiced by Linda Sokhulu. Many of the same voice actors re-appear. This dub promotes accessibility to a new audience. It provides the opportunity for people within South Africa, and other areas where Zulu is spoken, to connect with the characters within the series.

I find it funny that some complain about threats and violence in this series, since that is common in animation. Such complaints make the series appear more mature than the reality. It is more accurate to say Supa Team 4 is an all-ages series full of adventure, action, and humor, with a diverse cast. In addition, it defies oft-stereotypes of Africa. Others reported that the series draws visual inspiration from hip-hop girls groups and retro 1990s R&B groups. Malcolm Wope, an artist from Cameroon, does the visual design. The series has distinct characters, a real world but futuristic setting, while working through the girls' interpersonal issues.

Despite calls by Morrow for sharing the show, which she called a "project of passion," there is little chatter about the series on Reddit, and only one mature fanfiction written on July 30. There is more chatter on X/Twitter, with one account even as an unofficial fan page. Furthermore, on Tumblr, fans praised the show's animation, described the series as relatable, cute, have listed LGBTQ+ headcanons, drew fan art, and liked the magical girlesque transformations of the four protagonists. There may be chatter on other platforms, like Mastodon servers, but I am not personally aware of it.

Like they do with many series these days, Netflix did the fans of Supa Team 4 a disservice. All eight episodes dropped the same day on Netflix. While this makes it easy to binge the entire season, it creates a situation of catch-up among fans who run the risk of seeing spoilers on social media for episodes they haven't watched. This severly limits the possibility to discuss each episode without spoilers and can ruin pacing for a series. Netflix should have followed the model used for anime: dropping one episode each week. That would have allowed for more community to build around the show, than dropping it one day and moving on. It is irresponsible.

Although I wasn't familiar with series writers Ng'endo Mukii, Khadidiatou Diouf, Voline Ogutu, Maame Boateng, Omotunde Akiode, Tshepo Moche, or Gloria Huwiler, I knew of Vanessa Kanu. She directed the third episode/film of Kizazi Moto entitled "Moremi." It centered on the frailty of the human condition, family togetherness, and the value of one's soul.

Series director Dave Osburne, assistant director Tabitha O'Connell, production designer /art director Alessandro Chirico were names. I did not know series producer Ceri Barnes, head writer Amy Keating Rogers, and story editor Cindy Morrow either. Rogers worked on other girl-power series like The Powerpuff Girls and My Little Pony: Friendship. In addition, Osburne has worked on his share of animated series since the mid-1990s, as did O'Connell. At the same time, Chirico worked on Black Mirror, a series based upon The Twilight Zone. Barnes has been producer since the late 1990s.

For many voice actors, this may be their first voice role. Arthur previously voiced Willow in Nella the Princess Knight. MacMillan provided his voice for video game characters, as did Martin. Salim voiced Zanror in The Legend of Vox Machina. Animators have worked on series such as Kazazi Moto, Star Wars: Visions, and The Amazing World of Gumball, and films (Seal Team and Storks).

I excited to see where the series goes from here. Maybe Mama K will practice Nichiren Buddhism like her voice actor. Perhaps Zee will have Cuban roots like her voice actress or some of the main cast of Supa Team 4 will be queer. Looking through the social media of the protagonists, I am seriously doubting the latter.

In Zambia, same-sex sexual activity, for men and women, is illegal, a legal measure inherited from British control, and reportedly many queer people are closeted. Unfortunately, there is a slim chance for change. The Zambian High Court upheld acquittal of a human rights activist, who called for the country to recognize rights of sex workers and LGBTQ+ people, in 2013. However, a public opinion poll, released in 2010, indicated widespread disapproval of "homosexual behaviour."

Even so, the series is primarily produced in South Africa. After the end of apartheid, it outlawed discrimination based on sexual orientation. Furthermore, it is the only African state to legalize same-sex marriage. In addition, there are legal protections for LGBTQ+ people from discrimination in employment and elsewhere. At the same time, the creators may want to avoid making the series controversial and won't have any queer relationships so the show can appeal to all Zambians.

Ultimately, I hope Supa Team 4 reaches new heights in season 2. Maybe it will pave the way for African animation in the Africanfuturist, superhero, comedy, adventure, action, and other genres.
