the thing about fantazy worlds where there is "no homophobia, no transphobia, and no racism!" is that there's still ableism, specifically anti-autistic ableism.

because queerphobia can be erased by normalization, but ableism can't be erased just by taking away the labels.

in fact, taking away labels like autism and neurodivergence only makes being neurodivergent even harder:

if there's no word for why someone's different, there's no way to help or understand them, which leads to othering and demonizing them.

this is why even in utopia based fantazy worlds like shera and the owl house, neurodivergent (and specifically autistic) characters (entrapta, alador blight) are still not understood as much as neurotypical characters. they still have to explain how they're different, and doing that without having the word "autism" be common knowledge just makes it more difficult.

the only real way to erase ableism is to create a world where neurodivergence and disability is understood, talked about, and accepted.

but no one's done that yet, so here we are.

It still really bugs me with She Ra that it never really felt like it totally followed through on dealing with the consequences for Catra’s actions. And I don’t mean that in a punitive “she must SUFFER!” way, I mean that, for how much detail and focus the first four seasons put on Catra hurting the people around her on a very personal level, showing HOW they were hurt, and Catra’s gradual fall until that amazing scene where Double Trouble dug into how she chased her friends and allies away... there was never much of a reconciliation between her and most of the people who she’d hurt.

It ended up feeling like a dangling loose end, where a key part of the catharsis was just... skipped.

Basically, what I would’ve wanted was for Scorpia, Entrapta, and the Horde cadets to all have their own separate conversations with Catra, basically talking about what happened between them, and what they were thinking and feeling at the time. Yes, basically just “sit down and talk about their feelings”, but in more depth. It really felt like there should have been a proper reconciliation arc there, and there just kind of... wasn’t.

so uhh lukewarm take here but i actually love it when a villain acknowledges their motives.....and then just stays evil.

single favourite asoue netflix episode was when count olaf just went "yeah y'know what maybe i do have trauma maybe i am an orphan maybe my best friend killed my father and maybe i've never felt like i'm enough for anyone."......and then proceeded to burn down a hotel.

hordak finally explaining his tragic backstory and then just staying evil for almost the whole next season.

wilford warfstache who's literally just "haha yeah i have a lot of issues [keeps stabbing you]"

ezra squall casually talking about all his dead friends with morrigan.

i just love it as a trope. and it's always about characters that are so beyond redemption that their motives can essencially be treated not as a redeeming quality, but rather as a joke or a plot device. i love it.
