Shout out to that one woman with the tricorn hat waltzing with a lady in the ballroom scene, then later sort of gives Jareth a kiss on the cheek as he passes by.

Time for more Vanessa Afton angst because blondie is giving me brainrot-
The fact that she just carries that photo with her is just- *mwah*, love it, because it makes my brain itch with the possibilities and implications.
The boring explanation is that it’s simply there with her for the sake of exposition and that’s it. That, however, is boring so I’ll choose to ignore it.
If you’ve seen that bts photo where young Vanessa is with the fazgang, you’ve probably noticed that 1) she’s with Garret’s plane, and 2) The gang is in an awfully pristine state, which probably indicates that Garret’s kidnapping and death happened before the mci.
Now, in the photo she shows Mike, she’s wearing the same clothes and is still holding the plane, so it was most likely taken that same day.
What I’m trying to say is: she keeps that specific photo with her for sentimental reasons. Because it’s from before she realised her dad wasn’t normal, which leads me to think about their relationship before the slaughter.
Maybe she was daddy’s girl, and maybe she actually felt loved by him. Maybe they were in fact a normal family at that point.
And after the murders happened, after she saw what her father had done, it just…ended. Did he simply drop the act and had never even loved her, or did he just stop loving her because she somehow displeased him? She could never be fully sure and that ate her insides.
And it’s not like he was abusive to her 100% of the time. But any attempt of a ‘good father-daughter’ time afterwards just felt forced, performative, a lie. Any small gift he got her just felt like a treat that you give a dog as positive reinforcement, despite his smile. He went to her graduation not because he was proud and cared, but because it’s what is expected of him as her father, just like when he took her to her first (and last) prom (highly doubt she had a good time there). Child Vanessa wouldn’t doubt that her daddy was being genuine in these situations. But she’s not that kid anymore.
She hates seeing that little girl, smiling because she didn’t know and because she didn’t have doubts in his love for her. She’s incredibly jealous of her, as she is of Mike. And she hates herself for it.
She is incapable of throwing away that photo, that one glimpse of a normal life she once had, or thought she had, she isn’t sure nowadays. Maybe as a sort of self punishment, for being so dumb and blind. Maybe as some sort of sick proof that she should have hope, that the father she knew is still around beneath it all.
At the end of the day, the photo is just another burden she has to carry, much like the surname Afton.
