#she's also a TTRPG character in a game I'm currently playing
askfriskandcompany · 5 months
Note
Oh yeah, i don't think anything have asked this in a while. How's tge Legend of Zelda TTRPG going? Has it been put on hold, have anything interesting happened? Have there been any additions of subtractions to certain elements or lore stuff?
Also did anyone play Yiga and how did that go? And how does it work seeing how they kinda are followers of ganon "betrayers" of the Shieka
Tumblr media
It kind of petered out, as most tabletop games do eventually if you don't quite reach the end. It's a shame, but I'm still happy how it went. I've thought about rebooting it some day, but I'd need to change more things since Tears of the Kingdom introduced a lot of juicy lore that could come into play.
If you're asking how the Yiga were handled in that setting/lore? Basically, when Ganondorf was confirmed to have been reborn, the moment the Yiga Clan found out about it, they all rushed to swear fealty to him. Ganondorf was maybe a little surprised at first, but was happy to have a bunch of loyal minions right out the gate. After that, the first order of business for Ganondorf was the earn back the loyalty of the Gerudo, who, understandably, weren't super happy about him being active again. But they were also dealing with some problems from a bunch of demons, so they didn't have time to fight Ganondorf. So Ganon's like "Oh, are those guys giving you trouble?" then he and his yiga boys essentially swoop in and save the day for the Gerudo. After that the Gerudo are more willing to see Ganondorf in a positive light. (This all happens before the player characters rolled up)
Pictured below is the illustration I did of that particular incarnation of Ganon. The mark on his chest is a birthmark.
Tumblr media
Ganondorf eventually marries the queen of the gerudo, a woman named Arwa. They have a daughter, Shayla, who is talented at shadow magic. Shayla spends some time learning about shadow magic with the Twili who are also there (a long complicated story).
Depicted below is Princess Shayla.
Tumblr media
During that time she meets the current incarnation of Midna, who is a teenager slightly younger than Shayla. She also meets Midna's older brother Noct, who is secretly a reincarnation of Zant but he doesn't tell anyone about that including his own sister because he's ashamed.
Pictured below is Queen Penumbra, Prince Noct, and Princess Midna in their incarnations for that game.
Tumblr media
Then later Queen Arwa dies under suspicious circumstances and a rogue demon is blamed for it, but Shayla believes the twili were involved, so she ghosts her friends Midna and Noct because they're suspects.
She recruits the player characters into her investigation. Eventually they discover that Midna and Noct's mother, Queen Penumbra, is the real murderer, and has actually kept Queen Arwa's ghost trapped in a crystal so that she couldn't tell anyone the truth.
The party retrieves the crystal Arwa is trapped in and bring it back to Ganon, who is now in their debt. They (with Arwa's help) convince him not to fly off the handle and immediately try to kill the twili queen. Instead they take Queen Penumbra to court. We full-on had a Phoenix Wright style Court Episode about it. It was amazing.
And that's a small fraction of the stuff that group got up to.

Look, I'll be honest, I got very little for you here.
Typically around this time of year I'm either still out wandering some wild place in South Africa or I have just got back home from said wandering and either one of those means I've got like, three or four books that I've just finished and a bunch of albums and probably some kind of photographic shenanigans.
These are not happening right now.
I am currently in an apartment in Prague with some visiting family I've been touring around so it is. Different. In light of this fact we're going to do our:
Last First Monday of the Year 2024-01-01
which is going to be a wrap-up of notable entries from 2023. It's true, I got some notes!
Listening (Music):
There is a clear winner for Most Important Album for me this year and that has to be Titus Andronicus putting out The WIll to Live. I picked up Titus Andronicus a few years ago on a rec from a guy on IRC and after putting The Monitor on loop for days I was so down with it. Unfortunately while the rest of their repertoire is honestly really solid punk, The Monitor is truly next level shit. The Will to Live finally closes that gap. It's so good.
There's a lot of good pull songs from this one but I do adore Baby Crazy which is just a breathless rundown of the core philosophy of the album. Part of what links The Monitor and The Will to Live is a very heavy handed metaphorical through line, The Monitor through American Civil War references and The Will to Live through the convoluted nuclear family analogue.
youtube
Truly no one is doing it like Titus Andronicus.
Listening (Podcasts):
Noted originator of the new weeklypost tradition @girlfriendsofthegalaxy was always talking about Friends at the Table and so I was like "Hey her taste is pretty good that's probably better than the median TTRPG podcast" and hey. It was. SO much more than I was expecting.
I started with Partizan which was at the time the current season, and hoo boy. F@TT does many things that handily sidestep a lot of my issues with RPG podcasts. By running tight little game systems with strong narrative focus and leaning more into the storytelling side than actual play (while still allowing rolls and player decisions to completely upend the plot) they get into the action quickly, have strong character driven scenes, and manage to hold my attention.
I will be open and say that the politics of Austin Walker's storytelling are very mixed. A lot of people act like these games are incisive political commentary but they only really hit that occasionally, which I think is good. Leaning into the weirdness of these settings is important, and trying to make them cleave too close to modern problems at all times would weaken them, compared to what they actually do well.
What If Han Solo Was Beyoncé. Remember: You Have Beaten Your Worst Days. Destroy Something Instead Of Understanding It.
Within four episodes of the start of Partizan, one half of the game has seen the death of a minor god and started a false flag operation with consequences that would persist to the end of the season. The game systems in play often outright prevent character death in all but the direst situations, but they replace that with dramatic character change. Clem becomes Obsessed, Valence becomes Righteous, Sovereign Immunity becomes Paranoid.
They are definitely playing "for the camera", if you aren't a fan of heavy allusions to other media as part of storytelling you will not like this, but they work it out well. There's a commitment to interesting storytelling that follows well into the next point, which is:
They are very good at getting into characters motivations. Clementine Kesh is despicable, she is terrible, and she's the central focal point of a huge run of Partizan. Hella Varal of the Hieron series is also a spectacularly character-driven entity, frequently a major driving force of the plot, doing things none of the players would really want to have happen. This also applies to Lem King, to an extent.
After catching up with Partizan I went back and I've been running through the backlog. I am almost caught up to Twilight Mirage, I might step out to listen to the current season since it follows directly from Partizan. I'll see.
Reading:
Without a doubt the big one this year was Terra Ignota. Absolutely lodged in my brain forever.
Terra Ignota is like the flipside of the Culture. The Culture assumes that its members are so far gone from their humanity that their utopian issues are almost incomparable to ours. The Hives are instead a utopian society built on a hard break from modernity that has left them very, very vulnerable to our modern problems. The approach Terra Ignota takes to gender, nationality, and family is set up to argue a very interesting case, not that those things cannot be changed, but that you can't just go cold turkey on them.
(The Gender is particularly forceful. Mycroft's haphazard attempts to reverse-engineer gender for his imagined Reader are so good, they perfectly replicate the internal experience of going to a very very queer environment with a brain that was still ultimately wired by the recent past.)
The actual plot of Terra Ignota is kind of secondary to the spectacle of all these Types Of Guys interacting and exposing their internal processes in a way that is so satisfying. The Hives are unusual in part because there's so few that probably appeal to the readers. I don't think pretty much any of Terra Ignota's expected audience have much interest in the Europeans, Masons, or the Mitsubishi, and while some of them might agree with the Brillists they are given so little screen time that it's hard to say. Really it ends up being the Humanist/Utopian debate at its core, with the Cousins there to balance it. As a result it's impressive that by the end I think most people I've talked to are less sure whether they agree more with the Humanists or the Utopians.
Watching:
Arcane, a one that I don't think I talk about too much, in part because it's so tidy. A perfectly wrapped gift of tragedy! Any story where at almost any point a few characters could just talk it out and resolve all their problems but they don't is *chef's kiss* to me. If you like Othello you will love Arcane is what I'm getting at here.
Arcane is such a gorgeous show, dripping with character, every single scene is so carefully considered. There's an extremely long (in time) close shot of Jayce throwing up over a bridge that I think of all the time.
Arcane is so clear and uncompromising in its presentation of its characters. I've said before that there's actually very little character development among any of the main cast, instead the show builds on bringing very strongly defined characters into conflict and exploring what they do next. This works wonderfully.
And the music! I have probably listened to the Arcane soundtrack a little too much. Basically the only time I went on spotify this year was to look at the Radio channels for songs from the soundtrack.
Playing:
Given that I spent so long playing Breath of the WIld this year you'd think it would be that and you'd be dead wrong. Not that great! It's fine! I like an immersive sim open world game but do you know what I actually do when I feel like I want to play a game just for the pure thrill of it. I go open TItanfall 2.
Titanfall 2 is the ideal first person shooter campaign. It is short and sweet and interesting and manages to keep you sufficiently overpowered without making you feel like it's easy. I played the campaign on Hard at the start of the year and it is the shooter I remember shooters I don't actually like as being.
The reason I play first person shooters is for the fast reaction twitch play. I do not care for long kill times, I do not care for gradually plinking enemies down, I do not want to think about a target for more than 5 seconds. Titanfall is absurdly fast if you play it right, you never stop, you optimize for shooting on the run, and you bounce around the field like a pinball. Delightful.
Titan Combat in the campaign is meh, it's so often just a slog against artificially toughened bosses, or figuring out how to deal with those little AI bots. It's fine. I like being a big robot. Titans are probably better in multiplayer. At some point I will install Northstar so I can try multiplayer lobbies.
Tools and Equipment:
The 3D printer! I have been in the orbit of 3D printing types for ages but now that I have one I can see why its an essential tool for so many electronics types. The ability to just Make The Thing You Need is so powerful. Printed items have their limitations but they all pale in relation to "I hit a button and the exact thing I need appears in 2-12 hours".
Tumblr media
So many projects stall out because you need a bracket or an adapter or a flange or a box that you know all the specifications for but that will take two weeks to arrive or has to be ordered in batches of 200 or costs 10× as much as you're willing to pay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My printer is cheap as shit, the Anycubic Neo cuts as many costs as possible without being actively bad, and it's still a great printer. It can do anything I need well enough that I can carry on with the rest of my life. It has the precision to do slip fit parts and even basic materials have the strength for fairly crucial components.
Like, sure, you can make a lot of these things quickly by hand if you have the parts available, but like, even if somehow all your problems can be solved by cutting a PVC pipe to the right size and shape, do you keep all possible dimensions of PVC pipe in a drawer somewhere? No, you run into a problem that needs 60mm pipe and you only have 50mm pipe and now you gotta go to the hardware store and buy 2m of pipe for a project that needs 0.2m of pipe. It is such a problem-solver to be able to fabricate arbitrary complex shapes from plastic stock.
Making:
The big one. The Penrose Quilt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This took months for me and my mother to put together, and it came out exactly like we hoped. It's so good, it looks incredible, we put it together by hand with needles and thread and time, I sleep under it every night, it is the ideal item. Few things to build your handsewing confidence like backstitching probably over a hundred meters of seams.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was a really ambitious project and yet we pulled it off. Absolutely ridiculous.

9 People I'd Like to Get to Know Better
Thanks @sycamoretrees for the tag!
Last song: I'm going to cheat and go for a whole album. I've been really enjoying Where's My Utopia? by Yard Act recently: deceptively clever stream-of-consciousness lyrics that walk the line between wry irony and passionate sincerity, all set to post-punk beats that you can dance to. (Shout-out to HELLMODE by Jeff Rosenstock and Sorry for the Late Reply by Sløtface too – both brilliant albums as well)
And while I'm breaking the rules, I might as well mention my wrestling playlist that I've been working on! It's a really eclectic mix of songs that remind me of various different things in wrestling – feuds, characters, general vibes etc. It's not finished yet (I'd like to organise it thematically and write some annotations to explain my thinking behind the choices), but maybe you'll find something on there you like!
Favourite colour: it's a tie between blue and purple (especially lilac). Also currently enjoying the yellow-green of the new leaves that are appearing at this time of year!
Currently watching: wrestling, surprise surprise. I'm just about keeping up with AEW and completely failing to keep up with NJPW. Other than that, I've not really been in a big TV/film mood recently. Although I did see Dune Part 2 the other week, which I thought was fantastic. My partner and I have also become slightly addicted to watching Gab Smolders play Nancy Drew games on YouTube.
Spicy/savoury/sweet/(sour)/(salty)/[umami]: since @sycamoretrees set a precedent of adding options, I'm going to go with another write-in candidate: my beloved umami. I am a Marmite fiend and will eat just about anything if it has soy sauce/miso/strong cheese etc in it. I enjoy pretty much all of the above tastes though, especially when combined in interesting ways. If I had to choose between the original options, I probably lean towards savoury; I have extremely strong opinions on crisps.
Relationship status: I've been with my partner for almost 11 years now :) (While I'm here, go check out her fantastic art and tabletop RPG writing at @mortphilippa! Obviously I'm biased, but she's super talented!)
Obsessions:
Too many to mention them all, but here's a selection:
Wrestling (of course): as well as my usual AEW & NJPW, I've watched some CMLL recently, which has been fun. I also recently reached new levels of nerd by emulating King of Colosseum 2, a Japanese wrestling game from 2004, on PC. It's good! Holds up well!
Tabletop role-playing games – an ever-present obsession for me. I've just wrapped up a 4+ year D&D campaign that I was GMing, which is an odd feeling, but I'm so proud of the story we told together. I'm also currently GMing/writing stuff for Cy_Borg, Liminal Horror and Brindlewood Bay, among others! There are tons more I want to run though – too many games, not enough time! (I am always up for conversations about TTRPGs by the way – I could talk forever about them! Hit me up if you wanna chat!)
Puzzle games: more of a recent obsession. I continue to do the Wordle every day, but I've recently been enjoying Connections (sorting words into categories), Heardle Decades (identifying songs from the intros), and Squeezy (a weird game about fitting letters into other words). I'm also going through a bit of a point-and-click adventure phase. Really enjoying Unavowed by Dave Gilbert currently. I'm not usually an urban fantasy fan, so it's a testament to how good the writing is that I'm loving it as much as I am.
Spring flowers: spring has well and truly sprung here in the UK, and I am loving all of the flowers that are popping up everywhere! There's nothing that brings me joy quite like going for a walk and doing some plant-spotting (I'm trying to get better at identifying plants this year! I'm mostly reliant on Google Lens and a bit of inherited knowledge from my Grandma currently)
Oops, that was A Lot! Enough about me. Time to tag some other people! (Only if you feel like it though! Absolutely zero pressure)
IRL friends (I know you all very well already, but I always love hearing what you're up to 💙): @thewaythroughthewoods, @thepenultimaterolo and @mortphilippa (and @unpairedbracket if you fancy it!)
Some Tumblr people wot seem cool (sorry if we've not interacted much – I've not been on Tumblr a lot recently and I'm bad at starting conversations!): @norfkid, @sybilius, @dansedan, @unlikelywrestlingfan, @punkrockpariah

Bite Marks: Time Skips and Pack Politics
Due to life happening, it's been several weeks (maybe more than a month?) since we played Bite Marks. (Currently we alternate with me running Bite Marks and Thomas running Nahual!)
Tumblr media
I was nervous about running the game and resetting the momentum. Josh suggested we catch up and figure out what to do next. I think a more relaxed GM than me would have just spent a shorter session of chatting, and starting up again a couple of weeks later. But I'm not that kind of GM!
In case it's helpful for folks here's what I did to get back into the groove!
I started with a brief summary of the most important bits from the last session (the pack had interrupted a ritual at an abandoned supermarket, Ruby the enby lesbian core runaway Alpha and Cake the himboest himbo human turned ritual sacrifice were the key characters involved, etc)
I suggested a time skip. Mostly because I find that if players have spent a long time away from the game, it can be hard for them to re-tune to their characters. We talked through things and felt a few weeks felt good, so we could center an important plot point (make sure the pack is fully healed up, new pack members have had some time to feel out the tensions, and everyone now has to do what they can to set up for a tense political meeting involving several factions)
From here I went around the table and asked set-up questions for the meeting. We felt out if we needed to just talk through decision points or play out the scene. This included questions like, "Now that Cake (yes, the NPC's name is Cake, long story) is irrevocably involved with what's happening with the werewolves, are you going to tell him everything?" and "What are you going to do to ensure the meeting goes well, despite the ongoing tension between the Kastila packs and Stray Dog packs?"
I then jumped into the big scene itself, taking place at one of the Churches nearby. Because we all spent time building up the moment together and preparing for it, we could all feel the stakes involved and play to find out what happens next.
Right before that jump, folks pointed out that I forgot about Sherri's character having the rest of her turn to prep for the meeting, after Fidel the Alpha told her to take care of things. But we decided Sherri could instead pull at that scene whenever she wanted, as a flashback, during the meeting itself. (Which ended up being very cool actually! Note to self: use flashbacks more often.)
I place a lot of pressure on myself as a GM to facilitate a good session with an even momentum all throughout. (this doesn't include prep, prep and I just don't get along, hah!) But I'm glad my players reminded me that we're here to collaborate on the game together, and I appreciate them playing alongside me to set things up. It ended up feeling really satisfying!
TTRPGs are a skill based hobby, but it's also a social activity and we're all here to support each other and have a good time!

Oh an about me?!
Hello, Hi, Good Time Zone, welcome in.
This blog is currently on hiatus.
Name: let's use my self insert tav name: Iliana. My OG tumblr is here, and that's where the follows and likes will originate from, be warned, that blog is where ALL real-world stuff goes.
Quick about me: I'm 42, non-binary she/they, pansexual but very demi. I have a cat named Fujiko who enjoys talking. I'm from Washington, DC. I'm audhd, have hEDS, and I'm an abuse survivor.
My tags (also attached to this post!): astarion's beloved blogs about bg3, liliana speaks, liliana does a durge run, astarions beloved does a durge run, liliana's bloodweave playthrough, traumathurgy, bg3 trauma talk
Things I will not tolerate: racism, anti-LGBTQIA+ sentiment, anything hateful, any weird behavior from people unable to separate characters from their actors.
Tav Masterpost!
BG3 note: my game is modded, screen grabs will not be from a vanilla game. I'm always happy to answer questions about what mods I'm using!
What do you DO though? I'm an interior designer for my "9-5". I write urban high fantasy and magical realism and create creatures, worlds, and setting details for TTRPG creators. I do voice work (audiobooks for indie authors, including reading rules for TTRPGs) and am starting to get into asmr rps. I'm a casual photographer and videographer.
How long have you been involved in fandoms? I've been writing fic since I was 14 (I started with the neverending story!), and I think my biggest claim to fame is getting cnd'd by Anne Rice for writing a fix-it-fic about Armand and Claudia.
Why I love Baldur's Gate 3: I'm a huge ttrpg nerd, I love DND, and I played BG1+2 when I was younger. I avoided ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING about bg3 until I had it in my hands. This game is hands down the most beautiful thing I've ever touched. and truly, all the origin characters behave like player characters, down to the backgrounds and the trauma. I love that this game doesn't shy away from the darker side of healing.
Other fandoms? BTS (I've been with them since 2016), one piece, What We Do In The Shadows, LOTR, sailor moon, star trek (almost all), star wars, animal crossing, final fantasy
Things I just think are neat: whale sharks, cottagecore and dark academia, keyboards
A note: I may, occasionally, rant about how poorly fandom is behaving when it comes to treating the cast of BG3. I may also talk about my own trauma, but I'll try to keep it vague.

Gabbi (Athena works too)
She/Her
Demisexual
29
Girl-Bossing too close to the sun by day, writing gremlin and fandom trash by night
Cat lover
Fandoms: Stardew Valley, My Time at Sandrock/Portia, Palia, and whatever hyper-fixation catches my fancy on any given day.
Hobbies: Writing (duh), TTRPG (currently playing two Pathfinder campaigns), video games, reading, and sometimes drawing.
Ask and game tag friendly!
Hello! I tried to do this Writeblr blog once before, then puttered off because of who I am as a person. I tried other socials to share my writing and realized nothing compares to the community here on Tumblr. I want to try to be better about posting more regularly on this blog, in addition to interacting more with fellow writers and fandom friends!
If I'm not writing fanfiction (check it out here), I'm working on some original works in the hopes that one day I might do something with them. I currently have 3 WIPs brewing. Two romantasy books, and a fantasy series. Check out some information about them below.
Favorite Tropes/Content: Fake Dating, Found Family, Diverse Casts (seeing LGBTQ+, BIPOC, mental health, and people with disabilities representation), male characters that are sensitive, scholarly, and show their emotions, royal court politics settings.
I don't use this blog solely for writing. Fandom stuff is bound to also arise, but I might share snippets of some of my other works that I just do for fun. I'm looking forward to making friends, and hopefully being a bigger part of the community.
Might share some information about my WIPs later.

MORE QUESTIONS
what other fandoms do you enjoy outside of ASOIAF?
Lmao, the big list of Things Misa Enjoys
I very much enjoy anime & manga. I got infected with those brain worms back in high school, & they simply will not leave. Particularly into Sailor Moon, which I haven't stopped thinking about since 1999, (I have OCs for that & a fic I'm gonna one day sit down & plot out beyond This Is The Vibe. I have a few things floating around in my brain, but I just haven't made the time to do anything with it. Maybe since I'm at reception for 6 hours I'll do that 🤷🏻‍♀️) & JoJo's (I also have OCs for this one, but no fic. I do have a homebrewed ttrpg system to run a JoJo's campaign with, though. But I need to finish statting enemy Stand Users & some character design. Also it's not a priority because I have an asoiaf campaign trilogy to finish running). I don't read or watch anything with the quickness, so I haven't watched a ton of newer anime or made that much of a dent in my reading of Berserk, but I do enjoy both newer stuff and Berserk. I even have a couple figures from Demon Slayer, which is probably my favorite newer series? It feels very nostalgic to the series I grew up watching.
I was into the Netflix Witcher series, but I haven't been able to bring myself to finish season 3. No amount of Joey Batey tits or confirmed pansexual Jaskier can really build my hype back up when I've heard the last bit of s3 sucked & I know I probably won't watch season 4. I have collected all but the last book of short stories though, so once I've worked through more of my books I need to give a fair shake before donating I plan to start those & get into The Witcher proper.
The Elder Scrolls is very good & fun, & I know the plots of all the mainline games even though I've only ever actually played Skyrim to completion. I have...I have so many OCs for that. And a fic I'm slowly working on that tells the story of the Dawnguard DLC by way of Lapsed Viglant Of Stendarr & Werewolf Vampire Hunter Are Forcibly Adopted As Serana's New Parents (and also I am confirming Serana as, like, eternally 19 because she feels very teenagery/early 20s-y to me). Fun fact: two of my current very close friends (my Platonic Wife included) were made by way of TES (and then another friend was introduced to me by a TES friend). So, thanks for your service, Todd Howard. Y'know, I guess.
It feels very "What are your hobbies? / Magnets." to say, but, like, dolls in general. I've collected porcelain dolls since I was little (but that collection got pared down massively when I moved from Texas), & I'm currently working through a clean/restore/dress/display of my old Bratz dolls. I've also dropped real adult money on dolls to (out of box, bc it sparks joy) display in my apartment. Specifically the Sasha (my best girl) Rock Angelz repro I waited almost a full year to see drop, Heather Greyson from Shadow High, & The Pride Bratz (I had a giftcard). I need to finish cleaning my old Bratz before I drop money on more though. So I know my shelving situation, lmao.
I am not not into Dragon Age, but I also complain about it all the time. I refuse to engage with it in a multimedia way. What I cannot learn by playing the games/have told to me in those games is simply not for me to know. Just...the way the franchise is handled & how it feels very obvious that Bioware wants to tell an incredibly specific story (while still allowing for character creation?), all the lore decisions they're making that feel like retcons/throw away everything I got invested in early (hello the dwarves & the dalish & Alistair's everything), & the increasing non-optional nature of the comics & books...it brings my blood to boil. The games are fun though! I have fun playing the games! And my personal Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor trios can be pried from my cold, dead hands!
I'm gonna be real, I know much more about Th Old World Of Darkness than Vampie v5, but I am into Vampire The Masquerade. This is, again, a "I have learned everything in bursts of hyperfixation that last a varying length of time," but I would very much like to take one of my two special vampire boys out for a spin one day. Because they're there! They exist & they are appropriately melodramatic, & I love them. Evil, fucked up, Hecata thug & flouncy, Catholic For The Aesthetic Toreador music producer my beloveds 💕

TTRPGs I Love
as i finally get to play more TTRPGs beyond D&D, i've found some games i really like and i wanted to recommend three of them today (in no particular order)! despite the fact i love it, anyone who follows me will have played D&D, so that won't be on this list.
Alone Among The Stars
sometimes you simply cannot find people to play with, but that doesn't mean there aren't great games out there! all you need for Alone Among The Stars is a d6 and a deck of cards, and you use these tools to tell a story about a character travelling alone through the depths of space. there's also a two player version i haven't played. my current ongoing game is about an android, sent out alone to explore unknown planets, learning that she's more human than she thinks. and the level of structure in Alone Among The Stars is perfect for giving me a story that still surprises me without taking away from the overall vision i had for the character and her arc!
Lasers and Feelings
i absolutely love lasers and feelings and i've gushed about it before. another sci-fi TTRPG, lasers & feelings is a fun improv-heavy game where your character has a single number stat to remember. depending on the size of your number, you're either better at lasers (logic) or feelings. from there, it's all just working with the other players and your GM to have fun sci-fi hijinks and adventures! ran this game for a few members of my D&D party a while back when we didn't have enough players for a full session, and the character setup so easily creates fun, memorable characters that you can just be stupid about. and from a GM perspective, i loved the little rolling tables for creating scenarios. (i'm also working on my own fantasy L&F hack at the moment! very excited)
Urban Shadows
urban shadows 2e isn't out yet, and it's the quickstart that i played with when i ran this campaign, but even the incomplete rules made for an excellent game. urban shadows is a PBTA game system that stood out to me because of the dark, mysterious urban fantasy setting and the incredibly cool character playbook options. i've not gotten to run a full campaign, and i have to admit that the low-prep style of urban shadows GMing isn't exactly for me, but i absolutely adore PBTA games, i love the setting and flavour of urban shadows specifically, and i'll definitely be going back to play for more than a few sessions of this game

Welcome to the Sublime🍁
Tumblr media
You haven't listened to Strangers in the Wood yet??? Well, you're only missing out on one of the best actual play series that has ever hit your podcatchers. We've got the awards to prove it.
Tumblr media
“But what is it?” You ask.
Strangers in the Wood is the first season of our show, Tales Yet Told, which premiered on September 2021. The whole season is only 33 episodes, each sitting around an average of an 1hr 30min per episode. It’s weirdly fun, surprisingly vulnerable, and horrifically evocative.
Strangers in the Wood is possible because we’re playing Babes in the Wood 1e by World Champ Game co., a ttrpg heavily inspired by Over the Garden Wall. It’s a narrative focused game using the Powered by the Apocalypse engine to help facilitate a story of tense and intimate horror and it serves as the backbone of everything Strangers in the Wood is.
Strangers in the Wood follows the story of two foster siblings, Dorothy and Dakota, as they wander a mysterious forest ruled by a shadowy entity known as The Stranger. Thankfully they have their friend Walter, the talking weasel to be their guide. If this sounds like Over the Garden Wall…that’s on purpose
“But who is it?” You shout from the windows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kendo (They/He) as The Game Master Hi, that's me. I'm our narrative facilitator and arbiter of consequences. I've been playing ttrpgs as a semi-forever GM for about a decade now. I started in D&D 4e and have since fallen in love with the indie ttrpg scene. I have a love for character-driven stories and exploring ourselves and the world around us through collaborative storytelling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dr. Hilda (She/Her) as Dorothy Margaret Reed - (She/Her) Dorothy Reed is a shy yet stubborn 7-year-old with dark hair and blue eyes. She idolizes her foster-sibling Dakota as well as her bio-sister Hazel from whom she was separated when she entered the foster system due to their large age gap and Hazel aging out of the system quickly. She enters the sublime dressed as a pepper shaker for Halloween and also wears a hand-me-down blue coat and red shoes that she got to pick out herself. She is incredibly happy with her life at the Abbott's home and wants desperately to return to the only place she’s felt safe. Her biggest fears include spiders, dogs, and the dark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marcie (She/They) as Dakota Wallace - pre episode 21(She/Her), post episode 21 (He/They) Dakota Wallace is a fiery and hardheaded 15 y/o boy with short black hair and green eyes. He grew up with an only father who live a hard and fast life with Dakota being there for the worst of it. As he got older he learned that if he wanted his place in life he has to fight for everything. After his father had a particularly bad incident, Dakota was thrust into the foster care system where he began to feel like an outcast. He enters the sublime dressed as Ferris Bueller for Halloween. He is afraid of returning home to the Abbott's and that he will always cause destruction wherever he goes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gus (He/Him) as Walter Brookstone - (He/Him) Walter is a clever and snarky young man currently in the body of a small brown weasel. He entered the Sublime after running away from home, feeling like an outcast and a loner. Here, after some time, his transformation would take place. He is determined to return Dakota and Dorothy home, hopefully sparing them his fate, and maybe cause a little mischief along the way. Walter has no love for the Sublime and would see it in shambles if he had his way. His biggest fears include being a bad person, staying a weasel forever, and owls. And yeah…that’s all of the Player Characters. Of course, there are plenty of NPCs to latch on to as well, but you’re gonna have to listen to find them.
“But where is it?” You scrawl into a dusty tome.
Lucky for you it’s everywhere you can get your podcasts! We have new episodes every other Wednesday! Spotify | Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Goodpods | Stitcher | Podchaser
“But why is it (something I should listen to)?” You whimper.
Because you love good stories. Because you love ttrpgs. Because you love Over the Garedn Wall. Because you love autumnal aesthetics. Because you love talking animals. Because you love your siblings. Because you love a crisp breeze through the trees. Because you love wandering blindly into the woods. Because you love cars driving through school hallways. Because you love selling your secrets. Because you love long road trips. Because you love the feeling after the tears have fallen. Because you love the isolating horror of recognizing your body is becoming something you don’t recognize and despite the fact that your true self is struggling to make itself known and free society will continue to treat you based on the malignant skin sack that buries your soul beneath its unrecognizable meat and despite all that you can still be firm in the fact that you are the only person who can define yourself.
All of that is Strangers in the Woods. Are you ready?

Actually did some art for once, so. Woo! It's been a while, kinda been just idling trying to figure out how to make good 3d models, but I decided that like. Yeah I should just try making some 2d stuff because it's been a while. And I did. And I enjoyed it.
There's two, a Warframe character and a D&D character, don't know if I should be splitting this up into two posts but like. There's not really a tutorial or anything for using Tumblr as far as I'm aware and it seems unlikely many people will see this anyway so even if it's a bit bothersome, it shouldn't be Too bothersome.
Anyways, first one, this is Damhnait, named after the singer for Sleeping in the Cold Below. They're my Tenno OC because Warframe has been taking up my time in Destiny's stead now that the sunk cost fallacy's not holding me down. They're a bit of a bigger kid compared to a lot of the others on the Zariman, and because of that they felt responsible when everything went to shit, and tried to keep at least their little group together, which they managed pretty well, eventually ending up starting a clan and building a dojo with their friends.
Tumblr media
Fast forwards a bit after first waking up, they're... not doing so hot as a faceless super soldier still, but they're not doing terribly, more just strangely empty as they go about their life up until the point the Second Dream happens.
They aren't the one who makes the discovery but to be fair it doesn't matter that much when you find out everything you thought you knew about yourself was built up on a lie, that lie being the idea that you and the people you are ordering to fight are adults and not a bunch of literal child soldiers.
Obviously, they are not exactly Okay after that little revelation and have not Transferred back into any of their Warframes even Once after recovering their real body, instead being carried around like in the Second Dream most of the time, also not being the most physically healthy just in general and due to that being pretty much wheelchair bound. I mean. If that wheelchair was a humanoid-killing machine capable of magnetizing people's bones.
Anyways, I tried to base them off their look in game a decent amount but obviously it's not perfect, their scars especially bother me but I haven't figured out texture for any of my other drawings and I'm certainly not stopping now.
And now onto something relatively more lighthearted, Cosgrove, named after Matt Cosgrove who plays on the TTRPG channel the Third Wheel and also made a bunch of character songs for the PCs and NPCs. He's one of my current player characters, a Wild Magic Sorcerer who had a very normal homelife with parents who love him and a dog and went to Magic Highschool and Magic College just like anyone else, eventually graduating with an ethics degree and becoming a workplace health and safety inspector for the Nine Shrines Merchant's Guild with a serious disposition and a desire to help others.
Tumblr media
Only... well, this is a D&D character, so obviously there's problems. Not from what you might think though, this man's as straight-laced and surprisingly average as they come, with a loving family, a decent social life, a stable job, a home to come back to, etc. The only real issue is something he's dealt with his entire life, his magic, something wild and uncontrollable that he's grown to resent over the years, which is what even lead to most of his decisions, to his need for control over himself and deeply unhealthy level of responsibility for others even when reasonably he should be looking out for himself.
He joined the party, not because of his own goals or motivations, but because his best friend, my previous character Indrina Morea, ended up getting seriously messed up in the first fight she was in, not enough to kill her but enough for her to realize that she was not enough for the party as it stood then and there, and for her to make the decision to ask for help, going to the most capable person she knew, who she also knew was a strong magic user even if he actively avoided using any magic.
He's got a deeply unhealthy mindset for an adventurer obviously, adventurers are so deeply varied but they almost all Want things, have their own wants and desires, don't hesitate in dangerous situations and act on their instincts. Cosgrove though... he freezes up, he refuses to use magic unless given proper authorization by either the leader of the party or the highest rank ally available. He uses a gun in most of his fights and doesn't even Have a damaging spell.
He's the weakest link in the party, and the rest of the party doesn't Know it yet, even to him, while it's obvious he isn't exactly suited he doesn't know the extent of it, and it's going to be made Very Clear through various fights, getting singled out and having his weaknesses taken advantage of, and through it all he'll either sink on his own or the other party members will recognize what's going on and push him to start swimming. It's all a matter of whether they'll see the dangers and flaws of his current mindset before it's too late.
As you can tell by... well, all of that, I have a lot more to say about Cosgrove than I do about Damhnait, which makes sense because he's a character that's actively doing stuff and not just in my head while leveling up random items. As for his design, it's pretty simple and formal. I wanted to really hammer home how out of his depth he is here by making him... well, an office worker.
He doesn't look like some hero or even particularly fantastical, he's just a guy, he Wants to be just a guy, he's rejecting himself to be that and he's covered it up so well that if the rest of the party hadn't actively seen him using magic in combat they wouldn't even know. I also largely took inspiration from, well, two Jujutsu Kaisen characters, Nanami and a guy from the manga who I'm not gonna spoil in case any of my friends who wants to watch/read the series read this.
Anyways, that's the two of them. Who knows, maybe I'll post more within a semi-reasonable time-frame if I finish up more pics soon. I have been thinking about drawing my other active and soon to be active D&D characters, and maybe when I get more comfortable with art again I can start doing more complex things than just headshots, all just kinda depends.
At least I'm not working with MS Paint now.

(gehenna-calling) let's have some eva lore!! 2, 9, 17, 21, 27, 35
EVA LORE EVA LORE EVA LORE @gehenna-calling YOU'RE EVERYTHING TO ME
69 ttrpg character questions (send me some too if u want!!)
2. what was your original concept for this character? how did playing them change that concept?
The creation of Eva was a labour of love between me and one of my friends. The ST for the game is very laid back and easygoing, and didn't ban any clans. We were thinking of two thinbloods looking for their sires for a bit, but then I asked him "what if it's a thinblood and their sire in the same coterie though?" since the game is an After the Fall, and the city's to shit, so who cares about the Traditions, right? I asked the ST if he'd be okay with it, he said go for it, and then shit went downhill real quick. Banu Haqim Sire who is a police officer named Adam with Eva, his high school sweetheart who is terminally ill and thus keeps getting arrested for petty crimes was a lovely way to get this character rolling. The terminally ill bit rolled out of me picking thin-blood flaws and merits for her, as I think lifelike and vitae dependency should work like illness, and the ST is once again on my side, so her search for health is just a great concept I suppose :3 She hasn't changed much yet in my playing her, though. In my defense, I've played her a shocking total of two times so far... but I'm having a lot of fun with her so far <3
9. when in their life were they most scared?
Probably when they were diagnosed for the second time. The first time, she was mostly hopeful and ready to just get over the cancer. The second time, it hit her harder because chances of survival dropped so significantly. She wasn't ready to die, still isn't, and the ever looming threat of the end of her life really scared her shitless for a couple of weeks.
17. they’re crying—what did it take to make them cry?
Eva's one of those people who don't really have control of their tear ducts. If she gets too emotional (be it angry, sad, or overly happy), she will tear up. Hell, if the air's too dry, there will be tears. She's doing her best in keeping her emotions under control, though, because it doesn't look professional. She used to keep everything bottled up, but since her diagnosis she's gotten less bottly and more open, simply because there's no reason to keep everything in anymore. And hey, when she gets incredibly nauseous due to medication she's on, she's going to cry about it.
21. do they have an idea about how they’ll die? do you?
Getting embraced by her high school sweetheart was not how she thought she was going to go out. She always expected death to come swiftly. Metastases that would eventually drain the life out of her. And it's not like it's going any better now that she's been embraced. She gets sick often still, symptoms that bring back the lingering fear of death. Adam might have said this would fix her, but she's unsure, since she's still sick and she feels like she's dying every so often. It'd only make sense for her to succumb to the disease. Her ambition is finding a cure, though, a way for her to live out her vampiric days without sickness. At which point, with the state of her city currently, the SI is probably going to get her.
27. how do they usually dress? why do they dress the way they do?
Eva was born and raised in a family with money, money that comes from a family business. Due to that, she's always been told to dress properly, and she has kept that up even now. Her go-to outfits can best be described as business casual, but she knows when to dress business chique if the situation asks for it. She prefers dresses over pants as they feel less restrictive, but she's also not immune to a good suit or a nice pair of pants. Sometimes she might even prioritise the way she looks over the way an outfit might make her feel.
35. when did they feel loneliest?
Eva's no stranger to feeling lonely. Her family have mostly made her feel like she's an expendable resource, her brother actively works against her, and due to her family's legacy, she's never been quite sure if people liked her for her, or for her family. The worst day of her life was probably the day her best friend from a support group passed away, though. They always had each other, but now she's once again on her own.

Oh no, I'm accidentally working on early concept art for another OC! I already have so many characters to feed 😭
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is going to be my character for a TTRPG oneshot set in a cyberpunk setting, same world as my other character Roy Nordberg. I don't even have a name for her yet! I can tell you she's of Japanese descent, but grew up in Prague. She's 20 and currently attending University. She's a level-headed and ambitious girl, intuitive and curious, but also strongly willed and indipendent and not afraid to break the rules if she thinks the reward is worth the risk. More on her as her characterization develops!
Tumblr media
The best part is that I need this character to play a halloween party themed oneshot. Which means she's going to be in a witch costume for what's likely going to be the whole game lol But I wanted to give her her own proper design, I needed it in order to figure out who she is as a character. And I definitely have a much clearer idea of her now

hiiii! long time lurker, occasional pretty things reblogger; iv been loving your Ophelia posts, is there any place you publish your campaign adventures? i must know!
ophelia is currently campaignless-- i've played her twice before and both times had to end up leaving the group for sundry reasons.
i'm currently beginning to start a shitposty tag for her again in preparation for ophelia v3 whenever i should get the chance to play her again! she's a very important character to me.
i don't stream d&d games and i haven't been streaming video games lately because i moved somewhere where i have 10mb internet speed lmao.
i am currently running an orpheus/eurydice inspired journey into the shadowfell themed short campaign based around grief and death and autonomy of death tagged with #🪦
i've secured the url @jackalgulch and plan to convert it to a blog detailing the lore and adventures of my high fantasy western setting which i've ran in D&D 5e so far but i'd like to try out fistful of darkness as well! i'd really like to post updates on it written as in-verse newspaper called the angelcrest trumpeter.
^ same deal as above w/ @somnustalis a mid-fantasy setting of mine where each plane is a layer of the planet. i'm planning on running a fast-paced crashcourse journey to the center of the earth to reinvigorate magic and write adventurers' logs.
@vesselverse is my loosely d&d adjascent not really sure what i'm doing with it world that is based around the themes of coming of age during a civil war and the relations between gods and mortals and bodily autonomy. maybe will run campaigns in it, might just also be a fun thought experiment for me not really sure yet. blatantly greco-roman inspired to a gaudy degree and i don't care
my 'oc blog' that i sort of don't use anymore but also has a lot of information, particularly about my first 5e setting called zaekata is here @bladesinging
and then i'm also a part of a campaign starting in the future where another pc and i are going to be running a blog to write session summaries. it's a homebrew eberron game! the url for that is @draconicprophecy
thank you so much for your interest; it's humbling to know that people enjoy my ramblings into the void and i enjoy posting wild whims of what i'm up to in ttrpgs and as a worldbuilder and creative in general!
