4 Minutes Is An Eternity

I am 42 years old.
I was in college 20 years ago in 2003.
In just 20 years, I have noticed a profound shift in society.
I was born in October 1981 so I am considered an older Millennial.
I have noticed a signficant macro difference between Gen X & older Millennials vs younger Gen Z and Generation Alpha (the generation after Gen Z).
What is the one change across society in the past two decades that could account for this change?
The total ubiquitousness of social media.
Whats the change?
The shortening of attention spans and the shortening of the mind.
Songs used to be, on average, approximately four minutes long.
Go back and look at the Billboard 100 in 2003 and look at it today.
Something should immediately jump out at you.
Songs today are much shorter than 20 years ago.
Songs today are typically just under 3 minutes long.
How did we lose a full minute in only 20 years?
Billboard also recently announced they established a TikTok chart to track the success of songs on TikTok, which is the new radio.
You may not know who Flyana Boss is but if I say, "Hello Christ?" if you were on social media at all the past few months, your mind probably automatically filled in the next bar, "I'm bout to sin again".
"You Wish" by Flyana Boss was literally all over TikToks for you page and later Instagram Reels to the tune of over a billion combined views.
They cleverly had their director film them while they ran towards him in public places as the director ran backwards in front of them with a camera on top of his head.
It is an arresting visual and the views racked up as Flyana Boss started to get requests from local businesses in LA begging them to run through their restaurants and stores for the publicity on TikTok.
Flyana Boss are Black female rappers, eclectic and a total callback to 90s rappers like Missy Elliot.
The kawaii aesthetic, elf ears and relatable clever lyrics about life and sex resonated with people.
They provide an alternative to the Ice Spices shaking their ass in a deli.
They also represent the Sexyy Red "Skee Yee" phenomenon.
Sexyy Red was the first artist to top the newly established TikTok Billboard 100 chart (she debuted at number 1).
Whats the Skee Yee phenomenon?
Its never about the actual song anymore.
You've probably heard "Skee Yee" by now.
Or maybe you saw Sexyy Red in the MetLife VIP area meeting the Jets owner with a stack of 100s held up to her ear.
The truth is, despite literally billions of views on TikTok and Instagram, almost noone has heard the full songs for "You Wish" by Flyana Boss and "Skee Yee" by Sexyy Red.
Because of TikTok, all you need today as a music artist is a catchy 5 to 7 second jingle, verse, hook, chorus or bar and if you can film viral content to it that people either imitate or watch, you can launch yourself into music superstardom.
Flyana Boss has already toured with Janelle Monae.
They were virtual unknowns prior to Summer 2023 with a few hundred views on their respective Soundcloud profiles.
Sexyy Red released her first mixtape, "Ah Thousand Jugs", in 2018.
The Hood Hottest Princess had been grinding away for the past five years on mixtape releases and trying to go viral on Triller.
"Dogg Pound Town" blew Sexyy Red up earlier this year.
Its the song about her toes and ass being ate while she eats Popeye chicken.
She has fire engine red hair and facial tattoos.
If you have a TikTok or Instagram, there is literally no way you havent scrolled past Sexyy Red at this point.
This is the new way to make it in the music industry.
We see Lay Banks, a 19 year old female rapper, utilize this formula to great success with "Ick".
Lay hired the same director that Flyana Boss used for "You Wish".
Instead of running in public places, Lay was filmed rapping "Ick" at a gas station.
"Ick" is about a guy with a foot fetish and bad credit who kills Lay's lady boner and gives her the "Ick".
The hook at the beginning of the viral clip is "Lady boner gone".
Lay is an extremely high energy rapper with hard hitting beats, a sick flow and clever and humorous lyrics complaining about men being in their soft girl era with their credit cards declining.
Its the updated 2023 Missy Elliot "I dont want no one minute man".
Lay is also strikingly beautiful, young and knew that "lady boner gone" waa a viral TikTok catchphrase that would catch on and go viral.
She also cleverly asked female viewers to film themselves rapping the lyrics to "Ick" if any guys had ever given them the "Ick" and then she reshared hundreds of these Youtube Shorts, TikToks and Reels to her personal social media profiles.
Lay has already charted on the TikTok Billboard 100 chart and she has millions of combined views.
This is clearly the new path to musical success as Billboard has recognized by establishing the TikTok Billboard 100 chart.
What have we lost in the process?
To be very clear, I love all three songs and all four rappers (Flyana Boss is a rap duo), especially Lay Banks "Ick".
That doesnt mean that this is a good change for society as a whole.
We, to speak on a macro universal level, dont listen to full songs anymore.
Everything became a sound bite, a viral clip on the for you page before you scroll on to the next video.
TikTok replaced radio.
New music is now discovered on TikTok.
But only in 5 to 7 second snippets curated to blow up on the for you page.
What happens to the Radioheads, Slipknots and Deftones in this brave new world?
What happens to us on a macro level when our attention spans have been so shortened by social media we cant even be assed to sit through a four minute song?
Social media, including messaging apps, is constant and ubiquitous.
It is a pervasive and constant distractiveness and mindlessness.
Its constant scrolling, constant notifications for discord servers & Whatsapp group chats, likes on Instagram & TikTok, trending hashtags on Twitter, new uploads on Youtube.
Constant validation, constant distraction.
Doom scrolling, scrolling for likes, scrolling for vanity, scrolling for boredom, scrolling for depression, scrolling for jealousy and envy, scrolling to endlessly compare.
When TikTok surpassed Google as the number 1 website in the world last year per number of visits, Google removed the pages in their results and made their results pages endless just like TikTok's for you page.
Googles results page was the new limitless rabbit hole of Youtube Suggested Videos -- it never ends.
No more iconic "Gooooooogle" at the bottom of the search results with a different colored "o" above each individual page number.
Nothing ever ends anymore.
Coupled with nearly limitless options to binge watch on streaming services where all episodes are released instantaneously and noone ever has to wait for anything, there are no weekly episodes anymore, no mid-season hiatuses, there are no repeats, season finales that are breathlessly anticipated...
Everything is immediately and constantly at your fingertips.
Its a total closing and shortening of the mind.
It is the evisceration of our collective attention spans.

Taylor Swift was being discussed on NFL broadcasts more than Patrick Mahomes while dating Travis Kelce -- now she has been disappeared from all NFL broadcasts as if she had never been endlessly discussed to begin with.
We are no longer being shown Taylor sitting by Kelces mom and Mahomes' wife and daughter.
But there has been no corresponding commentary at least making a joke about a breakup and a possible Taylor Swift song about same.
The NFL literally had Taylor Swift as their header on Twitter and now she is gone and they are acting like the above never happened.

I get it, the NFL wants female Gen Z to tune into their games but they literally had a slow mo of Taylor walking into Arrowhead Stadium.
Thats not drumming up female viewership, that is patently insane.
They were slow mo'ing Taylor high fiveing Kelces mom when Kelce scored a touchdown.
That is just downright bizarre and is not about increasing the young female demographic that watches NFL games.
It was creepy in how over the top it was.
Taylor was now the big topic of discussion during pre-game analysis of the Chiefs instead of Mahomes, Kelce, MVS, Pacheco, Chris Jones, Andy Reid.
It was an all out blitz for a month that went so far as Kelce being described as "Taylors boyfriend" instead of as a 3-time Super Bowl champion and star tight end of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kelce was always the new Gronk, the current poster child party boy of the NFL.
But the slew of commercials, brand sponsorships and SNL hosting gig didnt come until Taylor.
Predictably, young female NFL viewership went up over 300%, Kelce gained hundreds of thousands of Swiftie social media followers then Kelce stopped attending Eras tour shows, Taylor stopped attending NFL games, the NFL dropped it like it never happened and switched their header to Vikings QB Dobbs.
Back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Movies are going to head in the same direction.
2 hours will no longer be the default film duration.
These conversations are already happening within the film industry as studios are pushing a "crowdsourced film by committee", a Choose Your Own Adventure clusterfuck where multiple endings are filmed for each movie and each individual movie theater audience decides the ending in real time as they watch.
Everything is instantaneous, everything capricious, everything fickle, any demand can be met.
What happens to a directors vision if the audience can just decide everything?
And bet that studio analysts and executives will be closely monitoring what audiences vote for and will change future films to align with those votes.
What happens to A Clockwork Orange?
What happens to the Stanley Kubricks, George Romeros & Quentin Tarantinos?
What happens to taking risks?
Will there never be another cult classic?

What happens to horror movies that take risks and confront their audiences and skillfully mix gore, humor, satire, societal critique, snark, comedy, slapstick, survivalism, political commentary, dystopia, sci-fi and parody?

Do we want an existence like that where our art mediums no longer challenge, repel, confront, repulse, enlighten, elucidate and force us to take a look at ourselves?

Do we just want all of the art and media that we consume to be like the Netflix algorithm, endlessly adjusting to our every whim and preference, tirelessly trying to please us in every way, never offending?
Do we never want to be shocked or angered by our art again?
Isnt that what art was supposed to be?
Do we always want to be perfectly happy and satisfied with everything we see?
What will happen to movies that are so bad they're good?
What will happen to guilty pleasures?
Will everything be bland and vanilla, too dull to offend or tittilate, instantly consumed and forgotten with all of the other endless media we are constantly bingeing?
Our existences have been Doordash'd & InstaCart'd.
Everything can be done for us, delivered to us, driven to us, picked up by us, ordered for us, shopped for us, cooked for us, prepared for us, written for us, applied to for us.
Theres an app for almost everything.
The age of inconvenience and frustration is over.
Everything is frictionless -- even our art and entertainment.
What happens to quirky oddities?
Random ideas and concepts?
Harebrained notions and acid dreams?
Paranoid androids and visions?
Night terrors and daydreams?
All of the above have led to crazy innovative mindfucky scripts, films, songs, album concepts, music videos and movie shorts.

Elaboration on the Cainhurst Siblings Headcanon
I remember now that my idea for Maria and Bloody Crow being siblings was something just for fun when comparing their in-game designs, connections, and battles, but there was also one of those “Oh shit, FromSoft may be recycling ideas again…” moments too. I mean, they absolutely do and I still feel like this was no coincidence.

This is from my old post from last year or whatever, but let’s just recap the obvious here…Bloodborne had a lot of prototype ideas for Dark Souls 3, or at least…that’s my guess. They were clearly being developed around the same time, since BB was released in 2015 and DS3 in 2016.
Remember how the alpha version of DS3 and the city of Lothric in particular was all very Bloodbornesque and gothic? They changed it last minute probably because the influence was so obvious. There are other weird connections like this too, and the Maria/Friede similarities are no exception.
If you watch those VS battles on YouTube where we see Maria and Friede’s move-sets, they are undeniably linked. Maria was probably the beta version of Friede in a sense. She technically has three phases, starting with pure dex and swordsmanship, then moving onto the “enhanced” blood phase, and then ending with the full-blown fire and blood chaos.
Friede does the same, except with embers and eventual blackflame. Both of these women also did not want to use those final powerbombs though, because for Maria…it’s a sacrifice of humanity, and for Friede, it’s a sacrifice of the shelter she has created. Her painted world isn’t supposed to see flame.
Friede also seems to have the firstborn daughter syndrome of fearing failure to the point of desperation. She already let Londor down by being unable to usurp the flame, and part of me wonders if her story involved more guilt than is let on. Could she have abandoned Londor for shame? But…why not just keep trying to usurp after being turned to ash? I suspect Friede may have realized that Londor had some pretty questionable agendas and tried to redeem herself in the Painted World.
It’s so similar to Maria watching over the Research Hall patients (despite their misery) out of a desire to make up for what happened at the Hamlet. She is trying to do good, but she also is not helping anyone and still tries to bury the sins of her past. If she’s a parallel to Friede, I also think that’s why it would make so much sense if she were another tormented firstborn daughter with a heavy weight on her shoulders.
That’s when the siblings came in.

The design similarities are obvious. The raven/crow aesthetic of Yuria’s helmet is even more blatant than the Cainhurst visor, but Bloody Crow himself makes up for it with his crow-garb. They both ended up looking like armored ravens.
Yuria is dedicated to the place her elder sister abandoned with a noticeable zeal. Londor is her everything. Kaathe is her idol. She’s willing to commit strong acts of cruelty to advance her goals and is undeniably a character with some pretty grey morals.
She evens asks that we kill one of our own friends (Orbeck) in the middle of her questline because apparently he is trying to take Londor’s throne for himself. We ourselves know this definitely isn’t true, but Yuria doesn’t care. Something about this implies she is lying to us just to sneakily get rid of the guy, probably because it’s personal.
So, we have our white-haired raven girl in service to her ostracized people and lord, who is openly manipulating us to complete her goals, and shares some kind of implied rivalry with one of our “friend” characters—sound somewhat familiar? Mayyybe?
Bloody Crow is explained all via context, but apart from his similarity to Yuria in design, he ALSO is oddly familiar to Maria herself. He’s the only hunter besides us that uses what is very likely her bone to quicken, he is implied to be from Cainhurst, but only halfway because of his blended attire/faction (like Maria), and his strength is something you can’t just brush off, which gives him the feel of being a much older hunter from Maria and Gehrman’s generation.
Really, he and Maria are the only Cainhurst hunters we seem to fight in-game that have actual connections to other characters, that stand out as especially powerful beings.
Arianna is no hunter, False Iosefka may have come from Cainhurst but clearly had more association with the the Choir, and that one random Cainhurst knight in the dungeons is…not tied to anything in particular?
Maria and Crow are stand-outs if we’re going by Cainhurst’s legacy, is what I am saying. Besides Annalise, they are seemingly the only remnants of their culture that actually indicate the true strength of their people.
Who else laid claim to such reputation? The Londor sisters.
Both Maria and Friede abandoned their people/homes, devoted themselves to “aiding” others in a secluded haven after a great failure, both became associated with an older male figure that they fight alongside, and both harbor some darker power that they don’t ignite until absolutely necessary.
Yuria and Crow are the dark, raven-warriors with red katanas in service to the lord/queen of the nation their counterparts abandoned, they share rivalries with characters the protagonist is meant to befriend, they wield exceptional strength but not the same level of power as Friede/Maria, and they both seem to have questionable agendas.
In conclusion, I suspect that Maria was the first Friede and Bloody Crow was a prototype for Yuria. Both character concepts were further developed in DS3, and in that case, the siblings theory for Crow/Maria would make sense. Now we just gotta fill in the blanks.
All this overcomplicated drivel to say that I like the idea of Bloody Crow being Maria’s younger, fully-related brother and have for a while now and this is not news to literally anybody lmao.

The Colour of Fire
"This must be tough on your lot, huh?"
"What do you mean," Palira asked, already knowing where this conversation was headed. Her tail coiled instinctively beneath the desk.
"Oh, come on, you know what I mean." The customer was human, as they so often were. He counted out his coins on the counter, as if she wouldn't have to tally them herself. "I don't know what the right word is nowadays. Is dragon still allowed? We're not supposed to say wyrms, right? Or is that wyverns?"
"Dragon is fine." She didn't bother outlining the difference. If he cared, he wouldn't already know. "But I understood the your lot, as you so diplomatically put it. I meant the other part. What must be tough?"
"Look, you know, getting rid of coins and that. The paper money. You people like piling it up, right? Hoarding? What are you going to do - make a stack? Build a mattress out of wads of notes?"
"That's a stereotype." Palira let the you people slide. Some days she was just grateful for people. "The idea that we sleep atop of a mound of gold. It really doesn't work that way."
Her ancestors would have swallowed him whole, but evolution had seen them go the way of the giants, adapted for life in the crowded cities. She'd kept her tail, her wings, her penchant for pyrotechnics, but wore clothes and worked behind a counter; the same number of scales, just scaled down. No less a dragon, but more of what his sort would recognise as a person.
She began the process of counting his coins away, keeping a tally as she went. This change to paper money was welcome, but it involved an awful lot of hassle: all of the old coins would need to be taken out of circulation, with notes issued in exchange. Vast exchanges had been set up to manage the transition, with dozens of trusted workers like Palira having to manually convert between the two. It wasn't too bad, when they let her concentrate.
"Right, that's what I'm asking." The human really wasn't getting the hint. "How does it work, then? You just pile it up to look at it? You don't eat it, do you?"
Palira sighed, a wisp of frustrated smoke escaping from her nose. "Traditionally - and I don't speak for all dragons here, because we're all individuals - we've just been drawn to gold for the way that it gleams. In our culture, it's the colour of fire, which is obviously also sacred to us. It's that lustre we revere above all else. Not how much is can be traded for at the greengrocers."
They'd always loved gold for its appearance - just as his ancestors had, before they'd gone and made it weird. Humanity had declared this simple metal to be the unit of all worth, the symbol of trade, and then also used it as the marker of their greed. A love for gold was seen as toxic, the root of all their sins, whilst loving other things was still allowed. Dragons were painted as the embodiment of miserly evil, when they were aesthetes: they'd only ever cared about the beauty of the gold itself.
Of course, the human translation of gold-as-money had also made it incredibly hard to get hold of the stuff. Even those who didn't care for the colour needed it to eat every day, to invest in new clothes, to save to put a roof over their heads. They started hoarding it, hiding it, packing it away in bank vaults where nobody could admire it at all. For Palira and her lot, the transition to paper money couldn't have come sooner.
No wonder so many had applied to work at exchanges like this: handing out the new notes, and taking the redundant old coins in exchange. Finally, they could show the world how little they cared for money: they would make an arrangement of that gold, yes, now that it was no longer legal tender. They would remove it from circulation all right. It had been freed up to be worshipped, just like in the olden days. Legally worthless, but still worth everything to them.
"Fire's red," the man told her. "Everyone knows that."
"You have a good day," Palira said, handing over his wads for safekeeping. She could easily find out where he lived, if she thought he needed more of a lesson, channelling the fury of her ancestors for the modern age. That was the other good thing about paper money, she thought: it was much more flammable.

Hey! So, initially, I wasn’t going to fulfill this request because I’ve heard that the coquette aesthetic has some problematic origins (infantilization and the lolita complex, mostly). However, I really like the idea of embracing your femininity (as someone who adores hyper-feminine aesthetics), so I figured I would try my hand at writing this but without explicitly making the reader coquette… If that makes sense?? Instead, I went for more of a general, soft, hyper-feminine aesthetic. Episode 32: Controlled Demolition
I'm reacting to this while doing chores, so sorry if this is super brief. Hopefully it's not too plot heavy.
Have I mentioned I hate Kepler? Honestly the worst. I don't trust any of them.
Let's see...not a fan of Jacobi either. Of course I don't like Hilbert or his Decima project (which btw, it was very nice of the virus to not attack and kill Doug during his 100+ days alone in space without Hilbert keeping him stable). But Jacobi clearly doesn't know what he's doing, leave the dangerous chemicals alone!
Also the whole idea of Doug keeping someone on task...hilarious. Makes you wonder why Kepler REALLY gave him this assignment. Maybe to keep Doug distracted.
And then Maxwell. Looks like she has an interest in AI that's not entirely hostile, but at the end of the day, she's still working for the bad guys. When push comes to shove, she's gonna have to chose between Hera and Doug and Cutter and his errand boys. But I guess I hate her the least right now out of the three. She at least detected that Hera was in pain and is trying to do something. I hate to applaud someone for doing the bare minimum but that’s where we’re at I guess.
And Hera...you could have told Doug. He would understand. He's your friend.
I feel so bad for Hera. I just know they're gonna install some program in her that forces her to hurt her friends. It's only a matter of time.
Also, of course Kepler wants to play chess. That's the most villain thing ever, threatening someone over a chess board. Just once, I want to see a villain use a less ominous board game just to be funny. Like imagine Kepler with a nice Whisky in his hands mulling over a game of "Chutes and Ladders" or “Candyland”. It would be funny. Well at least Kepler embraces the villain aesthetic.
Though it's interesting: command doesn't know where the two years of Lovelace's life went. Or at least they claim. Now I'm curious. Was it the aliens? Is Lovelace a robot clone after all? Maybe Doug was right yet again!
A liability? Fire when ready? Oh my gosh is Jacobi gonna shoot Lovelace? Or Hilbert?

Nice of Dr. Maxwell to make sure Hera wasn't in pain. But um...what did they just destroy on the Hephaestus? Another secret lab?

Is that it? Yikes that really was short. Really short did I miss something? Okay, well I guess that's it.
Kepler should have stayed with his funk band. Maybe then he wouldn't be on my airlock launching list.

There’s one line in particular in the Lost Fable that I would love to get your perspective on.
“Why spend our lives trying to redeem these Humans when we can replace them with what they could never be?”
I am guessing this is one of those lines that (assuming your theory is correct) comes out under “Did not think that through” from Salem’s perspective.

two hundred million years ago the god of light decided that salem deserved to be punished with eternal suffering because she grieved in a way he perceived as arrogant and selfish. after a few decades* trying fruitlessly to kill herself she came to the not unreasonable conclusion that the monstrous gods who did this to her could and indeed should be resisted, whereafter she devoted considerable time and effort to fomenting a rebellion against them with the specific intention of usurping them
(*long enough for a whole new city to be established and grow to considerable size)
they retaliated by literally vaporizing every single person on the planet including her, and blaming it on her for not ~learning her lesson~ once she reconstituted. then fucked off and broke the moon on their way out, and certain key details in ‘the two brothers’ lead me to believe that the resultant bombardment on remnant did indeed have the realistic consequence of causing an apocalyptic mass extinction event do you ever think about the way salem screams when she’s set on fire i think about this every day holy fuck anyway
obviously none of this improves her opinion of the gods whatsoever
two hundred million years and a whole industrial revolution later* ozma comes back and they fall in love again and he expresses worry about the state of the world and how divided people are, at which point salem is like, basically, “the gods wrecked everything and left, of course the world has gone to hell and people are having hard times, maybe they just need some help?” and then goes STRAIGHT to enthusing that they could surpass the old gods. “create the paradise the old gods could not.”
(*when ozma reincarnates his pants have zippers. ZIPPERS i don’t care that salem’s aesthetic tastes are a few millennia out of date, by the time ozma returned mass production and factories were a thing)
this woman has spent upwards of two hundred million years truly believing, heart and soul, that people have the capacity to transcend the failures and limitations of their creators. she watched the gods obliterate humanity with a snap of their fingers and then she watched humanity claw itself back from the grave to spread across the world again, to survive and thrive even without the god-given magical powers ancient humans relied upon. can u imagine the effect that would have on somebody? to lead a desperate rebellion against the gods, and fail, and witness the execution of her whole world, and then see that world restore itself in the absence of those gods, in defiance of their design?
and then—after years of marriage, after four children, after waging war to support her lover’s ambitions—he blindsided her with “this isn’t what he asked of me,” and dropped the truth in her lap
that the gods who sentenced her to eternal torture and slaughtered the entire planet like it meant nothing to them have now appointed her lover to “redeem” humankind (for her sins! for her rebellion! the blade hangs over humanity’s neck because the gods still have not relinquished their grudge against her! do you ever think about how salem has spent her whole life knowing that her existence is someone else’s justification for murdering people! this is another thing i think about constantly it haunts me she grew up knowing that simply speaking to her was a crime punishable by death,) or else the gods will return to slaughter everyone, except her, AGAIN.
is it any wonder she spits the word redemption with utter disgust. is it any surprise that she flatly refuses to even consider the notion of redeeming humans before the gods she despises and holds as monsters inferior to their own creations. is it any wonder that she reiterated her own staunch conviction that humans can and should and must replace the gods.
as a point of interest this is not the only ambiguous “them” in lost fable—when the god of darkness says “you may bask in the powers of creation, but you do not own them,” he exchanges a glance with salem and then gestures towards her and ozma, clarifying his meaning as “you do not own humans”—and meanwhile the camera cuts from salem to ozma for the second clause such that we have no way of knowing whether she made a similarly clarifying gesture.
and like
yes, it’s grammatically sloppy and vague for “them” to mean “the gods.” but a) she was upset and people often misspeak when they’re upset, and b) what’s more likely: that the woman who has spent hundreds of millions of years hating the gods and wanting to overthrow them spoke a little messily while reiterating that ambition in the heat of the moment after learning those gods were planning a second genocide, or the unexpected sight of ONE of her four daughters doing a magic trick instantly triggered some latent hitherto unknown desire to eradicate humanity herself and breed magical humans, in the woman whose relationship with her own magic is clearly fraught at best, given how hard she hammers the “power comes with crippling weaknesses, be careful, be careful” point with cinder and preferentially uses dust or grimm or simple persuasion, only turning to magic as a last resort?
frankly i don’t know why anyone believes with any seriousness that the character who opens the story waxing poetic about the ingenuity and resourcefulness and bravery and passion and strength of humankind, who openly mocks ozma for the self-sabotage in his abysmal failure to inspire hope bc he fears the truth too much to share it and deceives and manipulates even his innermost circle instead, and whose main point of contention with her most valuable lieutenant is her frustration with that lieutenant’s fixation on magical power and consequent recklessness and impatience, is obsessed with magical power as the defining characteristic of humanity and disdains modern humans as inferior imitations of the real thing. like it genuinely baffles me that so many people read lost fable this way. how. HOW, when her hatred of the gods and genuine, absolute belief in human potential is bleeding from every scene.

This is the technofuturistic hellscape he promised us.  We just didn’t want to listen.  We thought we could have the neon and the chrome and the aesthetic, and still keep having those fragile, communally agreed-upon things we like to convince ourselves are inalienable human rights, as if the state of being human somehow made us immune to the abuses of the world at large and our kind at small.  We thought we could have the flash and the cash without the burn and the slash, and that’s on us, that’s on us all the way to the biomechanical bone, because Fast Eddie never lied to us.
Fast Eddie said “hey see this shiny chrome shell, it’s here to cover up the rotting flesh and putrefying soul beneath,” and we heard, “look how cool this is, look how stylish, look how easy it would be to hide your sins beneath a gleaming mirror, reflecting your critics back upon themselves.”  Fast Eddie said, “look how the race to commodify and exploit everything will inevitably erode our souls and make us numb to the tears of those around us, making us the architects of our own dehumanization,” and we heard “money good, power better, neon best.”
It isn’t Eddie’s fault that we, by and large, refused to listen.
He told us a cautionary tale, and he forgot that humans will always be attracted to that which sparkles and shines.  He promised us a future.  He just didn’t promise, if we followed him, that it would be a good one.
Lu Topia offered us something better, but we told her she was “childish” and “outdated” and “boring,” and now look where we are.  When the sky’s on fire and ocean’s gone, at least we can say that we looked cool from the cradle to the grave.
At least we can say that Eddie was proud of us.

Woe(and NOT the fun kind |:T)
So I managed to push myself through the first episode of Wednesday, and then watched the next two eps, and my take on the series is: DEEPLY uneven.
Spoilers for the first 3 eps under the Cut, though I didn’t watch the whole series and probably wont
The first 20ish minutes of the first episode(effectively the Pilot) is REALLY BAD, cliched and over-done, with a meager handful of dark spots(the car ride, LURCH :>, the color allergy, “everyone will know I didn’t finish the job”) to make up for it. However, at the therapy scene the True Strength(one of three) of the series is finally allowed to shine in Jenna Ortega’s performance as Wednesday Addams. The Rose Lalonde energy here shatters the scale; her Cruel Wit, Knifely Cunning, and icy REFUSAL of sufferance and Compromise irradiated the scene and all around it; cutting through -Bright and Cancer-Green-  the fetid tissue it was buried within.
Unfortunately there simply is So MUCH of the latter, and it ultimately smothers that brilliance. There IS Charisma to be found here aside from Ortega(Riki Lindhome as the therapist of course giving what Ortega needs, Joy Sunday positively CHEWING her way through some of the WORST material here as Wednesday’s rival[the LOATHING, Dear Readers, the Loathing it BUUUURNS so PITCH and HOT >:> >:>], Christie of course is as solid as she always is with on-point delivery and an artisan’s command of her GENERATIONAL physicality, Victor Dorobantu is a positive JOY as Thing, Zeta-Jones and Guzman are a Delight, and Christina Ricci does so much with so little in a surprise supporting role), but with everyone BUT Wednesday and Thing, the material is simply too great a weight, and most of the cast simply does not have the chops or time to act through both the awful writing AND Burton’s banal influence as producer and director.
All Burton’s old failings are here to their worst display: an over-wrought “normies” and “outcasts” dividing of the world which is, simultaneously!, forced and not truly committed to; Weirdness, disemboweled of its Queerness and transgressiveness, then stretched crepe-thin over Convention(WEDNESDAY ADDAMS working with the COPS?!!?!); a desire for things TO be weird without any desire to truly UNDERSTAND Them OR their Weirdness in the first place(would it have killed these writers to actl READ SOMETHING about bees instead of just making shit up for lame dick-jokes?); characters too smart for their writers pummeled with the idiot-ball through lazily convenient plots; Goth aesthetics emptied UTTERLY of their ethos and cultural relevance(What. The Hell! Is even the POINT of an Addams that hears “You’re father’s a Murderer!” and doesn’t respond, with Pride and an unsettling smile?); attempts to write Teenaged and Current so dated, so clearly in the voice of a too-long too-comfortable Boomer who doesn’t understand the issues and hasn’t cared to try in near-on 30 years, that even rolling one’s eyes at them seems more than they deserve. Even Ortega’s Wednesday drags under this; how do you feed her a line like “what; are you a girl scout now?” and NOT have her answer with “Well, you ARE what you eat...”??? A story which sets Wednesday Addams to STOP a brutal cannibalistic monster; to PREVENT a moribund institution shattering under the Night-bourne reckoning of its ancient sins, consumed in Fire and Blood; A story which depicts WEDNESDAY FUCKING ADDAMS WORKING WITH THE FUCKING COPS TO CATCH AND PUNISH(?????) A MURDERER does NOT! Understand!! Wednesday Addams!!! Or the Addams family in general. Also the Addams snap doesn’t NEED a backstory! PERSEPHONE AVENGE ME!!!
This series and these characters are not NEARLY morbid enough. There is no Gothic Romance here; no Accursed Hero to Spit in the face of God and Shank the Devil. Much worse, Burton’s desire to be Society’s victim without, you know, knowing anything AT ALL about  the people our society ACTUALLY VICTIMIZES, or Caring to know them, or even SIDING with them, or having any history of personal or historical victimization, does the series real harm.
**SERIOUSLY! SPOILERS!!**
Maybe the rest of the series somehow fixes this(I really don’t care to find out at this point) but, through his conceit of “normie” and “outcast” societies, Burton LITERALLY makes white people the REAL victims of native American genocide, in just three episodes no less!, and I honestly don’t see how you can walk that back. The “Corrupt” mayor of the town and owner of its local themepark(only a well-to-do who grew up in LA would think themeparks are something EVERYONE has a ‘local’ of) is black. The Head Bully of this town, his son, is black. The “Queen Bee” Mean Girl of the BOARDING SCHOOL the whole series takes place in, is black(tho again: Sunday does a gr8 job with this material, as exceedingly limited as it is. The kismestic-tension btwn her and Ortega in some of these scenes is *Chef’s Kiss* Delicious :3 :3 :3). For decades people have been complaining about Burton’s refusal to include black people in his work and this is his response: a series were MOST OF THE ANTAGONISTS are black?! At least BIANCA is allowed to be COMPETENT!
Anyway: I love Ortega, I love Sunday at her most Imperious and Manipulative and Bloodthirstily Competitive, and Moosa Mostafa’s immediate lovability as a bee-nerd is ruthlessly wasted by awful writing. Give me a full season of, In Treatment like, Ortega and Lindhome sparring through therapy sessions. Give me a full season of Christie’s meancing, barely-contained Violence and simmering languor. Give me a full season of Wednesday and Thing committing Shenanigans upon assholes who deserve gruesome death. But SPARE Me This.

First up we have my husband, Javi. Javi is 100% Honeymoon like COME ON. He’s so Salvatore coded. Honeymoon is all about romanticism but the darkness within it. And Javi is so cunty in his little tight pants like he’s so honeymoon. Also the lyrics of 24 align with him so well it drives me insane.

Joel Miller- Norman Fucking Rockwell
Next we got Joel HEHEHEHEHE JOEL omg ok so this one is a no brainer: Joel is Norman Fucking Rockwell. Like come on how is he not. Like so many of the songs remind me so much of him. I could write a whole ass essay on this one. The whole Joe(L) part of How to Disappear like AHHH R U SERIOUS?? Also happiness is a butterfly and hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have- but I have it. HOPE IS A DANGEROUS THING FOR A MAN LIKE JOEL TO HAVE BRO. I feel like the aesthetic of NFR isn’t very frilly either, she’s in her wetsuit at the beach, in her lil shorts yknow? And I feel like that fits with Joel. Also the color green is very prominent in that album and I rlly associate that color with Joel. I feel like NFR can reflect the relationship Joel would have with a love interest but also the relationship he has with Ellie, like if you take her lyrics out of context I feel like it could relate to the relationship he has with her bc she really healed him and changed him and like broke down his walls which imo is all that NFR is about.

At first I was vibing with Tommy being Ultraviolence but he’s more Born to Die. His whole outlook on life is very consistent with born to die- when lana said I wish I was dead already. Pedro Pascal- Did you know that there’s a tunnel under ocean boulevard
Ik I said fictional men but Pedro is the source of my comfort in this cruel world and I had to include him. I feel like Pedro is this album because it’s Lana’s most personal album. In the other albums on this post she’s kind of creating these stories but with tunnel it’s very personal and real. Since Pedro is an actual real person I feel like this is an appropriate choice since he has a lot of depth just like tunnel. Also Pedro really cares about family- his relationship with his sister, and has suffered loss to suicide just like Lana has. And tunnel explores themes of family, loss, healing and trying and struggling to find love. Like bro Pedro is Sweet. He’s sweet and he’s Sweet. Yknow?
