Fluent Freshman - 38
PREV
If it weren’t for the fact that he and Riko had stumbled across a truly traumatizing video of his birth that they had watched secretly in Tetsuji’s office when he was away on a business trip one weekend Kevin would believe that he was born with an Exy racquet in his hand. But the image that is seared into his retinas to this day has proven that he came into this world empty handed.
That doesn’t change the fact that Kevin has spent the majority of his life utterly and completely submersed in Exy. He was trained as a Raven, he was court, he was a champion as both a Raven as a Fox and if he had his way he’d leave college with more Championships under the orange and white than the black and red.
Exy was everything in the world to him.
He could overlook many personality defects if someone brought something to the Court.
Apathetic five foot nothing who was more likely to stab him than shake his hand? Well, he’s the best goalie that Kevin had ever seen in his entire life (and that was saying something).
Tight ass who has anger management issues and will not shut the fuck up about his girlfriend now that he’s not even allowed to have? Well, he is a very solid backliner who has excellent ball handling skills (even if Aaron keeps telling him to stop saying it like that or why he keeps yelling that he’s straight).
Overly touchy, too emotional, will not shut the fuck up about his fiancé in Germany? Well, he is a very solid backliner who is great at rebounds (Kevin doesn’t get why Nicky gets mad when he says that or why he brings up Erik).
Guy who actively dislikes him and is dying for any chance to punch him and also being overly attached to his friends? He’s a great enforcer on the court and had the stamina to play far longer than the other two backliners (Why Dan always said “yeah he does” whenever Kevin commented on Matt’s stamina he will never understand, and he also doesn’t want to.)
Suspicious kid from Millport with a mouth that could strip paint and a past so shrouded in mystery that it even had Andrew perking up in interest? Well, he’s the fastest Striker in the game and the only person that has ever kept up with Kevin’s obsession with the sport. (There was the minor downside that he was the son of the Butcher and almost died before the championships, but Neil pulled through.)
He tolerated all of them and now they’re his best friends.
There are some who he does find personally objectionable but so long as Jack and Sheena manage to continue to be good on the court he doesn’t care about the many many faults in their personalities. They’re his teammates, they aren’t his friends.
He accepted that he might not like any of the others that came onto the team. For the most part he had never given a shit about before the Foxes, content with his brotherhood with Riko even if it wasn’t…perfect. Then he became friends with FF and FF had done him a truly large favor and Kevin wanted to pay that back the best way he knew how. Through his truly infallible health advice and through perfectly crafted smoothies.
Then Daniel appeared with the truth that FF truly met all requirements to be a Fox and Kevin tasted his own smoothie for the first time.
He considered both revelations to be equally upsetting.
Still…
FF was one of the best dealers Kevin had ever had the pleasure to be on Court with. The man knew his position well and interrupted offensives with an enviable ease that made Kevin wish to possibly strap some sort of device onto him and figure out how he did certain things.
It wasn’t that far off to believe that a man raised in the same environment as FF could possibly have similar talents and since Lisa fucked off back to some small town cult they really did need a good sub. Sheena was a good offensive dealer but they had games coming up where defense would be imperative and FF did not have the stamina for a full game and likely would not for quite some time considering he’d be recovering from being stabbed.
So, he’d defended Daniel’s right to try out.
At first, he had felt vindicated. Daniel kept up quite well during the initial warm-ups. Kept pace with Jack, Sheena, Aaron, Andrew, and Nicky. Kevin had been bringing up the rear mostly to make sure that Andrew didn’t stab the guy during warm-ups.
Then it was time for the first precision drill.
The other thing about how Kevin was raised is that he was raised surrounded only by the best of the best. The Ravens were at the top of the Collegiate hierarchy. The National Court used their stadium for practice.
The worst Exy that Kevin had ever seen in his entire life up until the moment that Daniel took hold of an Exy racquet was still only the worst team in Collegiate Division 1 Exy.
Then Kevin watched the ball go so wide that the entire court went silent.
All of the drills that followed were as bad, if not worse.
Kevin felt himself start to vibrate with anger the longer it went on. He started to shout corrections at Daniel but the younger man merely rolled his eyes, “I think I know what I’m doing.” He would say before pointedly proving that he did not.
Kevin only realized nearly an hour in that he had wasted his entire practice shouting himself hoarse at the actual waste of human life that was Daniel Stanton.
Kevin could accept being bad at Exy and having an inoffensive personality. Kevin could accept being good at Exy and having a bad personality.
Kevin could not accept being bad at Exy and having a bad personality.
Coach Wymack called the practice to an end and Kevin thought that he’d manage to keep his anger mostly inside (he is ignoring the near hour of practice he spent screaming directions) when Daniel decided to deliver the Coup de Grace.
Sweat soaking his bangs, panting, and without a single thing done correctly (even the way he was currently holding his borrowed Exy racquet set Kevin’s teeth on edge) the man had the gall, the gumption, and the absolute AUDACITY to come up to the coach.
“So, where do I sign?” he asks.
Kevin sees red and unleashes hell.
***
This was the most fun Andrew has had at a practice since he started having to come to them.
The look of embarrassment on Daniel’s face as Kevin accurately tore into everything he did wrong on the Court and every personal failing that Kevin could home in on. His attention shifted away to FF sitting in the stands near the University official who was shaking her head at the obvious poor showing. The University may have wanted Daniel around to spruce up the Fox’s marketability but even they couldn’t let someone so obviously awful onto one of their few Division 1 teams.
FF was sat sipping one of Kevin’s god awful smoothies looking completely unshocked by Daniel’s showing.
Kevin turned his attention to FF, “You said he was good!” Kevin points at the freshman as he continues to sip the drink.
Andrew interrupts, “He never said he was good.” He remembers the conversation so exactly and there are few things he loves more than having the opportunity to rub it in Kevin’s face when the man is wrong, “He said ‘Daniel has always been athletic’ never anything about him being good.” Andrew reminds.
Kevin whips back around to Daniel, “Have you ever even played Exy?” Kevin demands.
“I didn’t think it’d be hard to pick up.” Daniel argues crossing his arms defensively.
It sets Kevin off on another furious rant.
Andrew had thought that FF didn’t have a mean bone in his body and he’s quite pleased to have been proven wrong. The thought that FF had let Daniel get all the way into embarrassing himself in such a way?
Andrew had to give him props.
“How does it feel getting to watch this idiot crash and burn?” he asks coming to the glass.
“Really thought he could manage it if I could.” FF says with a shrug that has Aaron bark out a laugh.
“You really figured?” Aaron asks coming to stand next to Andrew.
FF just shrugs again, “I mean I also started not knowing how to play and now I’m on a pretty good team.” He says as if FF starting as a child not knowing how to play is the same as someone walking in demanding a spot on a college team.
Nicky lets out a laugh.
“Oh, Smithy I could kiss you.” Nicky laughs and makes his way towards the Court entrance to likely do exactly that moving past a Daniel who was so red in the face with embarrassment and anger that he looked as if he was about to turn purple.
Andrew tuned in.
“…small pond. The only reason you ever felt like you were worth anything is that Smiths was too nice to put you in your place before now!” Kevin was probably talking about medium-sized fish in a small pond but Andrew didn’t really care to know.
“Are you going to let him talk to me like this?!” Daniel finally turned to Wymack.
“Kevin, you shouldn’t talk to the public like that.” Wymack says without a hint of chastisement in his voice.
Kevin still straightened at the reminder, “You’re right. Sorry coach.” Kevin sneered at Daniel, “Get off the court before you taint it.” He hisses.
“You’re really not going to sign me?!” Daniel demands.
“Why would I?” Wymack asks with a raised brow.
“You took a chance on John!” Daniel points towards FF.
Andrew watches as Wymack’s face does something he’d rarely seen it do, it goes utterly and completely cold. “I don’t take chances with my kids.” He spat, “I give my kids a second chance. Get the hell off of my court.” He hisses.
Daniel’s face purples further before he stomped off of the Court.
“Don’t you dare walk off with that racquet! It’s worth more than you!” Kevin shouts after him and Andrew in that moment realizes that Daniel is going to do something stupid.
And FF is on the other side of the Plexiglass with only Nicky at his side.
It’s like watching a train crash.
Daniel might say something, but Andrew doesn’t know. He sees Neil rushing as well, his sense of danger always well-honed but Neil had been in Captain mode in the moments before walking some of the sophomore and freshmen through what they had done wrong.
Neither of them will make it in time.
Daniel throws his racquet, and he throws it right at FF barely 5 feet away in the stands.
The Racquet blows past FF’s head and Andrew lets out a breath.
Then before it could crash into the seats behind him and break FF’s hand wrapped around the shaft of the stick and stopped it’s trajectory.
“Your aim really isn’t getting any better by not listening to Kevin’s advice.” Smith says as he twirls the racquet in his hand so that the net was on the ground. “Also, don’t break the equipment, like Kevin said it’s pretty expensive.” He says.
Daniel let out a primal scream but where Andrew had stalled out to watch the miraculous catch Matt Boyd had not. Daniel was tackled to the ground by the backliner, “Absolutely not.” Matt said with a scowl.
“Smithy are you okay?” Andrew hears Nicky ask.
“Yeah, why?” FF asks as if he hadn’t just been attacked but considering everything that Andrew had seen it wouldn’t shock him if Daniel’s attacks were just par for the course back home for FF. “The racquet looks okay too.” He adds.
“Coach Wymack,” The University representative made their way down looking flustered at the outburst of violence.
Obviously not someone who regularly watched Exy or paid attention to their team.
“This is why I wanted absolute control over who does and who doesn’t get a shot here.” Wymack hisses pointing at Daniel as he struggled under Matt.
“You have our sincere apologies for this.” She says looking at Daniel, “He didn’t… we thought he’d be good for the team’s culture but it seems like we may have misjudged-“
“That guy just tried to take Smithy out!” Nicky interrupts.
“I told you he was dangerous.” Neil adds.
“Can someone call campus security?” Matt asks from the ground, “This jackass keeps aiming for kidney punches and I would like to not be pissing blood during winter break.” Matt requests.
“O-of course!” the University representative says fumbling for her cell phone.
Andrew looked at Matt and figured that the backliner had a handle on that particular mess at the moment.
He made his way over to FF and Nicky who was checking over the freshman.
“Nice catch.” He says.
FF shrugs, “It’s my racquet he was borrowing.” He says, “I didn’t want to get a new one.” He adds.
***
FF watches as campus security took custody of Daniel as he continued to spit and scream. There are talks about pressing charges, but FF just wants Daniel off of the campus and away from him. It’s Jack of all people who says that getting a restraining order is a great way to make sure Daniel stays the hell away from him and FF nods consideringly.
Honestly, he’s still mostly in shock he managed to catch his racquet the way he had. His reflexes weren’t quite up to snuff since he’d been trying to catch the netting, but his hand only closed around the shaft.
Embarrassing.
He really hopes no one teases him about his slower reflexes.
“He needs to be charged for assault at least.” Kevin hisses as they watch the security officers take Daniel away.
“It’d be attempted assault.” Aaron corrects.
“He assaulted my eyes with his Exy.” Kevin insists.
“If that counted as assault, don’t you think I would have pressed charges for all the times I have had to see you dance at Eden’s?” Neil asks. “Also, you’re the one that insisted he try-out.” He reminds.
“Smiths told me he was good!” Kevin screeches.
“No, we’ve been over this Day. Smithy said he was athletic.” Nicky reminds. “Are you going to do what Jack suggested?” he asks turning to FF.
“I’d like to see significantly less of Daniel.” FF admits.
“You know he did actually commit assault, if I pee blood I’m making Kevin go buy me pads.” Matt says.
“Whatever.” Kevin says as they continued to make their way back to the dorm to get ready for the day.

Starting a niche fic rec list called fics where Andrew scores from the goal (minor spoiler for the fics below):
Whatever it takes by temporaryeverything
A future fic where Neil and Andrew figure out their lives together. The World Cup is around the corner with the threat of the Moriyamas looming over Neil and they have no choice but to win.
A lot of angst and a little bit of exy and our boys being stupidly in love with each other.
Sequel to Can Nobody Hear Me (I cannot breathe), a future fic where Andrew is diagnosed with COPD and things are heating up with the Moriyamas
Hugs by JuiceGremlin/ @juicegremlin
Five times Neil hugged Andrew, and one time he didn't.
One of my fave go-to Andreil fluff (?) pieces
I can feel you under my skin by ConventionalExy/ @exysexualmoron (WIP)
Neil's second year brings changes. Things slow down and continue softer than they have ever been in his life, Andrew's at his side and they are working on being able to not be together 24/7, he can play Exy to his heart's content, he has a home, a family, a soulmate.
He also has Jack and Sheena getting on his nerves, papers to write, Aaron's trial coming closer with each passing day, paranoid habits to break, ghosts to fight when he closes his eyes at night and real-people things to consider like bank accounts and taxes and so. much. more.
He also has Andrew, their roof, their bond, their kisses, their touches and the promise of a future that is theirs, to grow and play and live.
But things are never that easy for Neil Josten, are they?
Sequel to Levels, a “soulmates feel each other’s pain” au with a twist
If anyone knows more please share

Sabu - Banshee
Release Date: 9 Dec 2022
Tumblr media
Legendary AOR singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Paul Sabu released ‘Banshee’, his new album as Sabu earlier this month. Made in collaboration with Barry Sparks (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Michael Schenker Group, UFO, Dokken, Ted Nugent), fans familiar with Sabu's work will find that it has a vibe reminiscent of his acclaimed ’80s work as Only Child.
The son of the India-born film star Sabu, Paul Sabu's big break came at the age of 22 when he became Motown Records’ official ‘Rock Dude’, releasing the classic self-titled Kidd Glove album in 1984. He reformed his own band, Sabu, the following year to release the ‘Heartbreak’ album. He then formed a new band, Only Child, which had huge success with a self-titled album in 1988. It is considered by many as one of the top AOR albums of all time.
Only Child later reverted back to the Sabu moniker, releasing much heavier and tougher music and finding new legions of fans with a self-titled 1996 album, followed by ‘Between The Light’ two years later. Together with ‘Strange Messiah’ (2007) and ‘Bangkok Rules’ (2012), these albums have a big sound with plenty of depth. Featuring blistering guitars and superlative vocals, they demonstrate just why Sabu is considered an AOR god.
Sabu has also been a go-to producer and engineer for artists as diverse as David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Sheena Easton, Lee Aaron, Madonna, Robbie Neville, The Nelsons, Shania Twain, John Waite and many more. This has earned him numerous Platinum and Gold Records in the US alone.
He has also been active in the world of music for film and TV series, with credits that include Baywatch, Beverly Hill 90210, Sex And The City and To Die For.
Standout tracks on his new album are "Love Don’t Shatter", "Back Side Of Water", "Dirty Money" and "Midnight Road To Madness".

You know when the new freshmen show up and Vixen Andrew is now co-captain of the Vixens. I doubt Andrew and the Vixens are going to tolerate Jack and Sheena’s bullshit toward Neil, and toward the Vixens. The Vixens are fully capable of making life very difficult for them-just look at what they did to Riko before he died. Life is going to be very difficult for those two unless they shape up.
I have to agree, somehow I think Jack and Sheena would be a couple of arrogant a-holes to the Vixens, considering how they treated Neil. I imagine Andrew would tell Neil to let him handle the two, to focus on Exy and learning to be a vice-captain (soon to be the captain) since he already causes enough trouble for Andrew and the girls, and Neil’s all ‘I don’t even want to know, take care of getting rid of their bodies by yourselves’.
Jack and Sheena refuse to believe that they’re being bested by cheerleaders, which only prolongs their torment. Dan, being the good captain she is, tries to talk sense into them, then gives up. some people have to learn things the hard way. The really, really hard way.
(Pretty much the rest of the Foxes sit back and watch with great amusement. Aaron’s rather proud of his brother, not that he’ll admit it. Nope, he’s just smug about Katelyn tearing into those two idiot freshers.)
(Neil has another reason to adore Andrew.)

Fusion Dance:
FF in the zombie apocalypse
Fluent Freshman AU | Unusual Fic Asks
I need you to understand what this has done to me. 1. I didn't think anyone was going to ask about FF for some reason and 2. The concept of FF in the apocalypse is so funny to me because I write a lot of him based off of me and I have ALWAYS told anyone who asks that if an apocalypse happens I am not the plucky young lass doing whatever it takes to survive type. (Like I get word that One Piece is cancelled because Oda got eaten it's like 'ok I gotta go ask that man some QUESTIONS in the after life' and I'm OUT. I just don't have that drive in me!)
BUT FF is that kind of guy.
---
FF had been ready for the end of the world for ages. He'd felt the world quake and tear itself apart plenty of times. The first time had been after the car accident. The second time had been when he realized his mother wasn't going to stand up for him. The third was when she said "I do" to a man who hadn't made it a secret what he thought about FF.
The end of the world kept happening for him, so it was almost bizarre when finally everyone else agreed that it had happened.
He didn't really pay attention to the news, only to the increasing anxiety around campus as more and more infections occurred and there were talks about locking down the campus. His anxiety ramped higher and higher until he found himself in a state that he hated. A state where it was all so much that he lost the ability to feel anything at all.
The numbers kept climbing, the infections growing closer, and FF couldn't calm down enough to feel anything.
Then a Palmetto student was bitten and weirder it was someone he had known if only because they played on the same team.
He dodged out of the way of Jack's open mouth as he heard Sheena scream. His senses for an unexpected back attack had been heightened from years of dealing with his step brothers and further from the mindless bloodlust of Black Friday shoppers.
Jack lunged for him again.
"No cure - 100% fatal at biting stage" flashed on the TV in the lounge yesterday. "Self-Defense Recommended" the news anchor said numerous times.
He couldn't bring himself to do it though.
Aaron walked into the hallway and Jack's attention turned. He lunged mouth open and-
FF found the courage to swing down his Racquet.
Sheena just kept screaming as she ran out of the hallway.
Aaron looked shocked looking between FF and Jack on the ground.
"The infection has hit Palmetto." FF says with a deep breath trying not to feel sick, "I'm not staying on campus." he says wondering how many more students had broken quarantine like Jack.
"Where are you planning to go?" Aaron asks giving Jack's body a wide berth as he stepped around it.
"My grandma lives in Washington State. It's pretty rural. I'll go there." He says because she's stood by him through every other end of the world. If this is the one that takes then he wants to be sitting next to her.
"Sounds better than sitting here." Aaron says with a shrug and FF could see that he was shaking from what he'd just seen.
"I'm sorry you had to see that." FF says because he knows what Aaron had done to protect his brother. Aaron looks at him with wide eyes, "He was past the point where he might have been saved. We can't hesitate." he says because that's what the news anchor had said.
Aaron takes a long and shaking breath and nods.
FF nods back to him before turning and heading in the opposite direction of the exit that Sheena had run towards. He heard Aaron's footsteps following him, well this is embarrassing that they're going the same way.
"Where are you going now?" Aaron asks.
"CVS." FF answers.
"Smart, medical supplies." Aaron agrees.
Oh, that is also a good plan. FF was just planning on taking a shopping basket and knocking every last bottle of Pepto Bismol into it. "Yes." he says.
"I'll text Andrew." Aaron says and for the love of god FF did not know what he would be texting him. "Hey, thanks...for uh...saving me." he says.
They haven't decided how to charge people quite yet for the Infection self-defense cases.
"Don't mention it." he says and honestly wishes he could tell Sheena the same.

Sometimes I forget that the Foxes are actually kids
Like
These are college kids.
I can just imagine day-to-day practice
That video that’s like,”BUT WHAT WAS HER SISTER? A WITCH! WICKED WITCH OF THE EAST, BRO,” yeah, that happens. The freshman are trying to copy Neil and do parkour off the bleachers. Andrew is eating an entire box of pop tarts watching them fall on their faces. Kevin is mid-rant with Renee about history. Aaron is trying to take a nap to Nicky’s sniffling because he misses Erik. Allison is ripping Sheena a new one for her tacky jewelry (which should’ve been taken off for practice.) Dan and Wymack have matching migraines. Lord help any reporters that observe practices

so, i’ve just found a draft of an old aftg fic i worked on a long time ago. it’s very oc centric, but im actually pretty impressed with it. theres not much, but would anybody be interested in reading it as an actual fic? im not opposed to continuing it. i’ll post what i’ve got below
June 9th rolled around before Kevin was ready for it. Summer had been rough, not worse than the year before it, of course, but rough all the same. He was glad the team had mostly separated, Kevin, Andrew and Neil sticking to the tower while their teammates dispersed elsewhere. Because after Riko had died, Kevin hadn’t any room for any emotion other than dark, sickening grief, so thick it choked him. And his teammates hadn’t any room for any emotion other than celebration and scorn. Needless to say, the two didn’t mesh well. He just hoped by now, as he slowly began to piece himself together again, getting used to a life without Riko at his side, they could move past that ugliness from late spring.
Surely the new foxes would serve plenty well as a distraction, though. Kevin thought them over as they drove to the longue, eyes focused on the landscape outside but not quite seeing it. Neil had claimed the front seat before Kevin could try, so he was stuck in the back with Nicky and Aaron, who had returned to the tower the week before.
Jack Morris, striker. Born and raised in New England, he supposedly had a temper, but all Kevin saw when he looked at his file was his brazen and aggressive playing style, that once they could get under control, would be a valuable asset to the lineup. They could deal with whatever rough edges he had; they’d survived the past year after all.
Sheena Hooper, goalie. Kevin hadn’t paid too much attention to her tapes or files, as he trusted Renee’s expertise on the position enough to trust her potential. He had noted though, she played with all she had, which was definitely a welcome contrast to Andrew’s complete apathy on the court.
Joseph Hunt, a talented backliner from the neighboring state of North Carolina. He was quick on the court, strong too, and Kevin trusted Matt to train him up to where he needed to be.
Nicole Marquez, dealer from New Mexico. Her tapes had showed immense promise, and Kevin hadn’t any objections when Wymack added her to the lineup.
That left the last two.
About two weeks into the summer, Wymack and called Kevin, Andrew and Neil to the court for an impromptu meeting. He had also managed to drag Aaron away from Katelyn’s to attend as well. Kevin’s first instinct was to expect bad news, but Wymack’s tense expression didn’t seem like anger or carefully concealed sadness, instead he seemed resolute.
He’d told them he was pulling two of the chosen recruits from the lineup and putting in two new ones instead. It was entirely unexpected and confusing. Andrew reacted with his usual disinterest for anything Exy related, and while Aaron seemed at least a bit interested in the news, Kevin and Neil by far had the biggest reactions. Mostly confusion, had something happened to the two? But that quickly turned to outrage when Wymack revealed that, no, the original striker and backliner were fine, he had just found someone better, without consulting the team first.
They quickly discovered the Wymack was entirely unwilling to budge on the issue. His decision was final. He hadn’t called them down to discuss it either, just to let them know. The biggest shock was that he refused to allow them to see either of their files, merely given them their names and positions. James Bell and Harriet Weiss, striker and dealer, respectively.
They were both transferring from some school in New York, both sophomores who had Wymack’s confidence they were good enough to stand on the court with a Class 1 exy team. They’d be flying in on June 9th with the rest of the team.
Apparently, Andrew’s lot were the last to find out, Wymack having told the upperclassmen the day before. Wymack quickly sent them away before they could argue further, with a gruff reminder that he was their coach, and knew what the hell he was doing with his team.
Back at the dorm Kevin and Neil griped about the situation until Andrew threatened to throw both of them out to sleep on the streets. Kevin holed himself up in the room, exy game open on his lap, to seethe. Wymack hadn’t told them what college the two were transferring from so he couldn’t even look up their games.
He trusted Wymack in his decisions, but he couldn’t fathom what his motivations could’ve been to keep it a total secret. Did he not trust the rest of the team to select their new players? Did he not trust Kevin? He dwelled on those questions throughout a night of restless sleep.
Eventually, he got over it, but curiosity still simmered inside of him. It seemed that way for the rest of the foxes too, as the two recruits were the topic of most of the team’s gossip. Nicky thought maybe they had paid Wymack to play on the team, and Wymack was so ashamed of taking the money he didn’t want the team to know anything about them. Allison’s theory was slightly more plausible, that they were two convicted criminals, saying that it ‘wouldn’t be the first time’. Kevin sincerely hoped not.
He guessed he’d find out soon.
They were the first to make it to the lounge, and Andrew and Neil went straight to the couches, reclining in silence. Nicky was perched by Aaron, blabbing on and on about his summer vacation with Erik, Aaron occasionally responding with either a borderline rude comment, or offering details on his own stay with Katelyn.
Kevin ignored both of them and went to check the locker and supply rooms, just to see that things were in order. Both smelled faintly of cleaning supplies, evidently the cleaning crew had been through recently. For a moment he was struck with the memory of writing on the wall, dark red staining through the number ‘10’, the sharp tang of blooding stinging his nose. He shook his head and the image faded.
He walked back to the lounge, drawn by the sounds of more voices. Matt and the girls had shown up in his absence, likely having come in together. That just left the freshmen.
Renee smiled when she saw him and walked over to give him a brief hug. Her face was flushed with the leftovers of a sunburn, freckles scattered along the bridge of her nose. He thought he remembered her mentioning a beach trip with Allison. “How was your summer, Kevin?”
“Fine. How was yours?” he replied plainly.
“Oh, just lovely. Florida is beautiful this time of year.” She took his arm as she guided him back into the room, where the other upperclassmen were waiting.
He was, all of a sudden, nervous. They had not parted on good terms, and Kevin prepared himself for any remaining animosity. They couldn’t imagine how Kevin could’ve grieved for a monster like Riko, they didn’t understand that he had been his brother, his other half, for his entire life. But, as he searched their faces, he didn’t find any anger, instead, resigned acceptance. It seemed they had come to terms with him over their time apart. Dan seemed her usually self-assured and confident self, Matt tall and cheerful beside her. Allison still looked at him with vague distaste, but that was normal.
No one said anything to him as he crossed the room to take his seat on the coach, and he breathed a sigh of relief. He listened halfway as they recounted tales of their summer vacation to Nicky, who lapped up every detail like it was gold.
He was more interested in watching the door, waiting for the others to arrive.
Joseph Hunt and Nicole Marquez were the first of the freshmen to arrive. Nicole barged into the room like she owned it, hooded eyes sweeping over the room. Joseph was less dramatic in his entrance, following behind her quietly. He was tall, but his hunched posture made him look ten times smaller.
Kevin frowned, backliners needed to be aggressive to properly defend the goal. He hoped his attitude would change when he stepped onto the court.
Dan quickly rose to greet them; her grip was firm as she shook a less-than-impressed Nicole’s hand. The rest of the upperclassmen introduced themselves, and Nicky joined in, introducing his cousins as well. Neil didn’t rise from his seat to give his name, but he wasn’t indifferent either.
Kevin was about to say his piece before Nicole interrupted him “I know who you are.” Her voice had a slight drawl to it “Everyone does.”
He raised an eyebrow at that but didn’t quite know how to respond. Clearly, she had attitude issues, but nothing he’d never seen. Hopefully she knew how to work her aggression out on the court, if not, she’d learn.
It wasn’t long after that Sheena and Jack arrived. In contrast to Nicole’s open aggressiveness, the two seemed coolly indifferent, possibly rivaling Allison in their haughtiness. Jack especially. He took in the room with his nose upturned, features scrunched unattractively. Sheena looked unimpressed at his shoulder.
The upperclassmen exchanged uneasy glances, but Dan went about with her captain’s spiel without any noticeable hitch. They exchanged several bits of conversation then, some of it sounding more agitated than friendly, but Kevin was more interested in how they preformed on the court than he was their personal relationships, so he tuned it out.
He couldn’t help but notice though, that Neil was still seated on the couch. He nudged him with his elbow “You’re vice-captain this year. Don’t you think you should act like it?”
Neil shot him an annoyed look but couldn’t get a word in before Jack spoke up. Kevin hadn’t meant for anyone to overhear, but apparently the new striker had keen ears.
“Don’t tell me he’s vice cap.” His lips were twisted into a scowl, which seemed to be his default expression.
“Neil is a talented player.” Dan said, arms crossed “Why wouldn’t he be?”
Jack turned to look at her “He’s far from the best. Kevin was the obvious choice.”
Allison tossed a lock of blonde hair over her shoulder “You’ve never even set foot on our court. Your opinion is irrelevant.”
He opened his mouth again, likely to say something nasty in retort, but Renee beat him to it.
“We’ve only just met,” she said, “let’s not get off on the wrong foot.”
“She’s right,” Wymack’s voice was gruff from where he was standing in the doorway “I leave you shitheads alone for five minutes and you’re already fighting.”
Matt grinned “Hello to you too, Coach.”
Wymack nodded in response and strode into the room, throwing a stack of papers down on the TV stand as he did so. “Let’s get this over with so I can hand out all my paperwork. James and Harriet, meet the foxes, foxes meet James and Harriet.”
It was only then that the foxes saw the two figures standing in the doorway. As they stepped into the room, they carried everyone’s attention with them. They were Wymack’s mystery recruits, and the foxes wanted to know who they were. Wanted to know why Wymack was so hellbent on them.
Kevin’s attention went first to James. He was tall, with an athlete’s figure. He seemed relaxed but confident, brown eyes lightly amused, his mouth set with a slight tilt. With his elegantly styled brown hair and put together demeanor, he didn’t seem like he fit into any of the expectations the rest of the team had unwittingly planted into Kevin’s mind. He seemed so…normal.
He caught Kevin’s eyes on him and offered him a slight smile. Kevin shifted his attention to his much smaller companion.
Harriet seemed even less conspicuous than James. She had curly blonde hair cut to her shoulder, and a soft look to her. She took in the room with interested hazel eyes. She was dressed plainly, but perhaps that was just for the flight over. Kevin would not have pegged her as a potential fox. But surely, they were there for a reason.
James was the first to break the silence, crossing the room to shake Dan’s hand “James Bell. Pleased to meet you guys.”
Nicole actually snorted at that, but James didn’t seem affected when he glanced at her. Harriet gave a small wave before following him to settle against one of the chairs. Wymack had bought a couple more seating options for the lounge to accommodate the larger number of foxes, and they were quickly being used.
Harriet took the seat while James leaned against the back of the chair. The ease at which the moved around each other meant they clearly had known each other awhile.
Dan found her voice “Welcome to Palmetto. We’re glad to have you.”
“Thank you. We’re glad to be here.” Harriet replied, the comment only noteworthy because it revealed a refined British accent.
Nicky frowned “I thought you guys were from New York.”
“We are,” she told him “But I moved here from London a few years ago.”
Matt raised a less than inconspicuous eyebrow at Wymack, who just stared back in stony silence. When no one else said anything, he picked up his stack of papers. “Alright, you know the drill. Paperwork and physicals today, practice tomorrow. Newbies, welcome to the team, we’re thrilled to have you and all that. I know you’ve all heard the stories from last year by now, so I won’t bullshit you. This team is messy, and you’re gonna have to get used to it. Learn how to function with your teammates, learn how to work together on the court, and you’ll be fine. Dan?”
Halfway through his speech, Abby had walked into the lounge, and as Dan stood up to address the team, she handed out the paperwork. Kevin mostly tuned Dan’s voice out, he’d heard it all before, he knew what he was doing. Instead, he focused on getting through the packet of waivers and signatures. The sooner he could get on the court, the better.
By the time he looked up again, Dan had finished speaking, and was now absorbed in a conversation with several of the freshmen. Jack and Sheena hung to the outskirts of the room, looking like they had nothing to say to anyone. The stream of students coming in and out of Abby’s office had begun, and Kevin leaned back in his seat to wait.
He considered starting up a conversation with Neil, possibly about training strategies for the upcoming year, but to his annoyance him and Andrew were speaking quietly in German to each other. He settled for running plays over in his head.
As he did so, his eyes, completely unbidden, traveled over to Harriet and James. They were speaking to each other, completely wrapped up in their own little bubble. James was waving one of the papers around as he made a point, Harriet nodded along emphatically. Kevin wondered if they were together. It seemed that everyone on the team was nowadays.
That got him thinking of Thea, and, oh. That was not a train of thought he wanted to go down. He forced his eyes away, looking instead to Andrew as he crossed the room from Abby’s office, eyes as bored and impassive as ever. He wondered what that was like, to move through life completely apathetic as Andrew was. He wondered if it was easier. Sometimes Kevin felt so full of emotions he thought he would drown.
Abby called his name at just the right time. Her office was comfortingly familiar, and he sank into that familiarity gratefully. Kevin liked routine, he always had. Liked things with rules, outlines he could follow. It felt like safety to him.
The start of the season was like that for him. The shift back to normalcy after the blurry rules of summer. He could only hope that this year would be calmer than the last. It already looked like they might have a rocky start with some of the freshmen, but that was to be expected. Kevin still wanted to know what the deal with Harriet and James was.
His checkup went quickly, without a hiccup. Abby paid close attention to his hand, made sure it hadn’t been causing him any pain, and sent him off with an all clear. He sat back on the couch and waited for everyone else to finish so he could leave.
He perked up when James’s name was called, unable to battle his curiosity. He didn’t think it was his imagination when his physical took longer than most others had. Longer than even the other freshmen. When he finally came out, he looked just as calm as before. Kevin narrowed his eyes. If he had some sort of old injury, Kevin needed to know about it. He’d ask Abby about it later.
The rest of the day passed without incident, all in all pretty boring. He spent his afternoon checking over his schedule for the year, sorting out his classes and ignoring the sounds of his teammates moving into the rooms around him.
The foxes had procured two new dorm rooms to meet the needs of the expanded teams. This meant that the original nine of them got to keep their set up, which Kevin appreciated. As he understood it, there’d be three each in the new rooms, one with Nicole, Harriet and Sheena, the other with James, Jack and Joseph. Kevin hoped that placement wouldn’t prove to be problematic.
At around 5 P.M. Matt poked his head into their dorm room. “Dan’s ordering takeout, if you guys wanted to come over for dinner.”
Nicky perked up at that, gazing hopefully at Andrew from his seat on the beanbag. Andrew shot him an annoyed glance but didn’t respond.
Neil, clearly tired of the awkward silence, answered for him “Yeah. Sounds good. We’ll be over in a second.”
Kevin huffed at that, but figured it wasn’t the worst plan in the world. He was done with his scheduling, and the exy game he was watching was only half interesting anyway. He followed his roommates without complaint when they left the dorm.
The girls had already settled in when they arrived, Dan and Renee seated at the couch, with Allison lounging against their legs. They quickly lapsed into their routine of light chatter and laughter, getting reacquainted after a summer apart.
This part of the team was still unusual to Kevin, they way they got along. It hadn’t been like that with the Ravens. How you played on the court was what mattered, how you behaved off it was unimportant. Friendships and personal relationships with your teammates weren’t necessary as long as you could still play with them, but for people like Dan, those relationships seemed key.
Kevin supposed there was some truth to it, he wasn’t blind or stupid, he recognized that as Neil had brought the team closer last year, they had grown stronger, but it was still unfamiliar territory. Were team dinners and game nights really necessary?
Even so, he didn’t protest when Matt struck up a conversation with him, telling him all about how his summer with Dan and his mother went, asking Kevin a couple questions about his own summer. He didn’t have much to input, he had filled his days with grueling practices and awkward dinners at Wymack’s house the nights he stayed over.
Halfway through their conversation Dan and Renee left to pick up their food, and Allison interrupted everybody to beckon them all closer. With a resigned sigh, Kevin moved away from his spot on the wall.
She cast a considering glare over them before she spoke, as if she were trying to read their minds. “So,” she said into the uncomfortable silence “thoughts on the freshmen?”
Kevin sighed, there was no doubt the betting would begin now, that insatiable habit of the Foxes.
Nicky’s grin was slow and languid, matching his posture as he lounged on the floor “Not bad to look at. Especially that last one.”
Neil shook his head “What happened to Erik?” Nicky waved a hand at him “Its all in good fun, Neil. Learn to live a little.”
