the wilds band au.
I promise it'll get better I just never know how to start stories. BTW all of their songs will be existing songs in the world from a bunch of different artists. I will be making playlists of songs in each chapter.
series masterlist
Living in L.A there are a lot of bands trying to make it big, get record deals. But The Unsinkables were different, they had an instant draw to them. Talent and charm that couldn't be matched, a stage presence that captured everyone's attention at once. The Unsinkables are also a sapphic band, a band of women for women, they are all of the queer community wrapped around their fingers.
There was Shelby, the bands lead singer and rhythm guitarist. The blonde was known as the sunshine of the group, always smiling and cheering others up. she is also in a relationship with fellow bandmate Toni, who is the Lead guitarist, though hot headed at times she has a heart of gold and will only come after you if you hurt those she cares about.
Dot, the drummer, is everyoneโ€™s masc dream. rumored to hook up with fans backstage and at after parties. a stone exterior at first after a life of hurt and disappointment but the softest person when you get to know her.
and then thereโ€™s Fatin, the bass player, everyone in the world has a crush on her and basks in the attention. she's hot and she definitely knows it, uses it to her advantage often. pushing lovers away after a day is normal for her, she keeps a lock around her heart for fear of it being broken. she can be icy at first but deep down, she cares deeply.
Shelby walks into the local music center, which is filled with practice rooms and walks through the halls, glancing though the small windows in the doors. Near the end of the hall, she finally finds who she is looking for, y/n, sitting in a room at a piano playing a melody that she seemed to have written, going back and forth between the keys and the paper she was writing notes on as she went. The blonde knocks quietly on the door and you look up to meet her eyes through the glass. Getting up and opening the door, Shelby gives you a friendly smile. You had known the girl since high school, you were in choir together throughout the years. The friendship has grown quite a lot, you consider each other best friends. though in recent times with her band, the closeness isnโ€™t quite the same, sheโ€™s always busy.
โ€œHi Shelbyโ€ you offer her a smile back while making space for her to enter the room.
โ€œHey, y/nโ€ she seems nervous, picking at her fingernails a bit.
โ€œIs there something wrong?โ€
โ€œNo, not at all. I just had a little question for you.โ€
โ€œOh, go ahead.โ€ you couldnโ€™t help but feel nervous too at the question.
โ€œSo, my band needs a new keyboard player. and I thought of you.โ€ she mustโ€™ve sensed wariness from you and continued quickly, โ€œyou donโ€™t have to but maybe you could come to practice, meet the girls, play a couple songs and we can go from there.โ€
you hesitated a bit, anxious about what the others would think of you especially over a year into their time as a band.
โ€œI donโ€™t know shelbs, what if your band mates donโ€™t want me there. i mean do they even know youโ€™re here right now?โ€
โ€œWell, not exactly. we floated the idea of a new keyboard player months ago, but no one could agree. our bassist, Fatin, thinks she can handle both instruments at once but with how bass heavy all of our songs are, sheโ€™s struggling on stage to switch back and forth. we need you.โ€ the girl explained, a pleading look in her eyes. โ€œPlus, wouldnโ€™t it be nice to see each other more and make music together?โ€
you smiled softly at the last part, but your brain goes to Fatin, she went to your high school as well, a popular kid so you never spoke to her, but truth be told you always has a fascination with the girl. she was attractive no doubt and she had an undeniable charm to her.
โ€œFine. one practiceโ€ you say sighing. โ€œBut I am not agreeing to be in the band yet.โ€ you add on before Shelby gets too excited.
โ€œYes!โ€ the blonde exclaims. โ€œBe at my house at 6 tonight!"
You watch Shelby walk out the room, smiling at her excitement. You sit back down to get more work done and pass the time until 6 o'clock comes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Being stranded on an abandoned island came with a lot of feelings. Regret. Anger. Frustration. Terror. Despair. And those were just the surface emotions. You had experienced them all. But after being on the island for nearly a month, a new emotion began to stir. A feeling thatย  there was no point. A feeling that no matter what you did, it wouldnโ€™t be good enough to save everyone. Hopelessness. You felt hopeless.
The feeling settled deep in your bones as you sat up against a washed up log on the sand. The bark was scratchy against your back. The night breeze caused you to shiver. A few hundred feet from you, the other girls sat around the fire, laughing and telling stories. But none of that could overpower the feeling of hopelessness that seemed to be drowning you. A feeling that it felt like nothing or no one could stop.
The feeling had been building in you for a while. Perhaps it was always destined to overwhelm you, seeing as one of the many treasures lost at sea seemed to be the medications that helped to keep your mind at bay. But the cause of it seemed to be unimportant. In the moment, all you could think about was how the feeling consumed you. How you felt as if there was no point in even trying anymore. There wasnโ€™t a point in waking up, or doing your chores, or interacting with the girls. Staring out at the sea, you wondered what the harm would be in running out into the sea, letting your body bash against the-
โ€œHey, hun, enjoying the view?โ€ A sweet southern drawl interrupted your twisted thoughts, and before you could fully process it, one of your girlfriends was sitting beside you and resting her head on your shoulder.
โ€œHm? Oh, yeah, just watching the waves,โ€ you responded despondently as your other girlfriend took a seat on your opposite side, gently taking your hand in hers.
โ€œYou looked pretty lost in thought there, babe, are you doing alright?โ€ Toni asked softly, her concerned eyes trying to meet yours as you simply stared forward at the ocean.
The words were on the tip of your tongue. The need to express yourself and be comforted by your girlfriends was burning you up inside. But a voice in your head kept you quiet.
Burden. Youโ€™re a burden. Donโ€™t bother them with your problems. They already have enough to worry about without you being all lame and sad all the time.
You took a deep breath, and for a moment your loves were hopeful that you would talk to them. Instead, you plastered a smile on your face and glanced between them. โ€œIโ€™m fine. Donโ€™t worry about me, I was just taking a breather.โ€
Shelby and Toni exchanged concerned glances with each other, but ultimately decided to drop it for the time being. They hoped you would come to them if it really got bad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You did not, in fact, end up reaching out to them. As the days passed, you did your best to fake smiles and act as though everything was alright, but all the girls were able to notice how tired you were, or the way you moved a little slower than normal, or how your smiles always seemed forced. But they opted to not directly address it, simply doing subtle things to check in on you and help you out. Your girls made sure you were drinking water and eating. Fatin tried to include you in her shit-talking sessions. Dot took on a few of your daily chores to ease your load. Martha gave you a little extra when distributing food. Leah and Rachel even offered you a spot in their makeshift band.
But this only made you feel worse. You felt guilty for making the girls feel the need to go out of their way in order to help you. You were trying to be okay. Really, you were. But everything felt as though it got heavier and heavier everyday. You were running out of energy to do anything.
Everything hit its peak about a week after your conversation with Shelby and Toni. You were at an all time low now, and nobody had failed to notice that. You wouldnโ€™t get out of bed. You simply lied there and stared into space, your mind elsewhere. You were so tired. Too tired to eat. Too tired to drink. Too tired to move. It was all too much. You felt as though you were being crushed by the weight of everything. You just wanted to curl in on yourself and disappear. You wondered if there was a way you could sneak off while the girls were asleep. You wouldnโ€™t use the medication. No; you had already burdened everyone enough; there was no way you were going to deplete their med supply on top of everything else. So you would have to find another way. There was always-
โ€œHey, babe,โ€ this time it was your hot-headed brunette girlfriend who interrupted your dark thoughts with her soft voice, โ€œShelby and I were thinking the three of us could head over to our spot and spend some time together, what do you think?โ€ She gently tucked some stray hair behind your ear, caressing your face as she did.
She was always so gentle with you. So gentle. Itโ€™s more than you deserve. She deserves better. They both do.
โ€œI think Iโ€™m just gonna stay here,โ€ you said, your voice coming out weak and scratchy from lack of use.
Shelby approached you then, crouching down in front of you and taking your hand. โ€œAlright, then how about we lay here with you for a bit? We havenโ€™t really gotten a chance to talk to our girl much lately; it would probably do us all some good.โ€ She was good at that; at making it seem as though they werenโ€™t going out of their way to help you. Her good intentions pulled at your heart strings. For a moment you considered being honest with them this time; finally letting all of your inner turmoil spill out of you for them to help clean up. But then the voice was back.
Look what you did now. You ruined their plans. How dare you? What a fuck up. Youโ€™re disgusting.
Your heart clenched, anxiety starting to rise at the thought of inconveniencing the two girls you loved most. โ€œNo, no, I wouldnโ€™t want you to do that. Please, you two should go have fun without me.โ€
Shelby was quick with a response. โ€œFun? Without you? Nonsense. Weโ€™ll just switch things up a little and-โ€
โ€œNo!โ€ You blurted, your breaths quickening as your thoughts began to spiral.
Useless. Worthless. Canโ€™t even let your girlfriends have fun. A mistake. A burden.
Toni took your other hand, brows furrowing in concern. โ€œHey, whatโ€™s going on?โ€
By this point youโ€™re gasping for air, a full on panic attack in the works as your bottled up emotions can take it no longer. โ€œYou have to go, you shouldnโ€™tโ€ฆyou canโ€™tโ€ฆI canโ€™tโ€ฆโ€
โ€œHey, hey, hey, love. Iโ€™m gonna need you to take some deep breaths for me, alright? Youโ€™re okay, I promise.โ€ Shelby rubs the back of your hand with her thumb, squeezing it gently, trying to get you to calm down.
ย Toni took your hand she was holding and placed it on her chest as she took exaggerated deep breaths. โ€œBreathe with me, alright?โ€
Before long, you were calming down, now breathing evenly, tears streaming down your face.
โ€œThere we go, love, I knew you could do it,โ€ Shelby cooed, taking your face in her hands and gently brushing your tears away with her thumbs.
โ€œSorry,โ€ you mumbled, going to move away, but Shelby held you there, looking into your eyes with nothing but love and concern.
โ€œThereโ€™s no need to apologize, love,โ€ she said, releasing your face to hold one of your hands instead.
โ€œWeโ€™re just worried about you,โ€ Toni explained, โ€œyouโ€™ve been pulling away, and we want to know whatโ€™s going on in that pretty little head of yours.โ€ย
She took your other hand, squeezing softly, and you took a deep, shaky breath.
โ€œIโ€™m not okay,โ€ you said hoarsely, tears slowly beginning to leak from your eyes again.
Both girlsโ€™ hearts broke at the overwhelming pain in your voice.
โ€œItโ€™s so hard to get up each day. I feel so useless. But then by laying around all day I only become more and more useless. And you two have been so wonderful and here I am all sad and lame and annoying and-โ€
โ€œHey, hey, hey,โ€ Toni cut you off, putting an arm around you and pulling you into her, holding you tight. โ€œYou are none of those things, okay? I can promise you that not a soul here thinks you are useless, or lame, or annoying-โ€
โ€œAnd trust me, if they do, Toni will cut a bitch,โ€ Shelby interrupted, causing you to let out a weak giggle.
โ€œIโ€™m really sorry youโ€™ve been feeling this way, darling. I wish youโ€™d come to us about it,โ€ Shelby said.
You sighed. โ€œI didnโ€™t wanna bother anyone with my depressing shit. I mean, weโ€™re all stuck here on this god forsaken island, the last thing I wanted to do was be a burden to you guys.โ€
โ€œYou could never,โ€ Shelby assured you.
Toni nodded vigorously.
โ€œY/N, youโ€™ve been here for all of our shit. You were the one at my side following my shelter building meltdown, you were the one helping nurse me back to health after we all got food poisoning.โ€
โ€œYou were there holding me tight after I told you and Toni about my life back home,โ€ Shelby said, โ€œWe will always be here to return the favor. Thatโ€™s a promise.โ€
You nodded, tears still flowing at all of the overwhelming emotions filling the atmosphere.
โ€œI love you both so much,โ€ you choked out in a sob.
โ€œAnd us, you.โ€
โ€œAlways.โ€
You nuzzled your face into Toniโ€™s neck, breathing her in, and welcoming the safety she brought you. Shelbyโ€™s arms were quick to wrap around your waist as she joined Toni in holding you, making you feel infinitely wanted and loved.
You were stranded on an abandoned island with no idea of what tomorrow might look like. A situation like this is one that welcomes chao and panic.
But as the three of you sat there, holding each other, one thing was for certain: you had never felt more grounded and calm than in this moment.

Your steps were ever so slow to try and stall the inevitableโ€” to have to break the news that you did not have any water to drink, not even after the rain that had fallen throughout the night.
"Hey, where were you guys?" Nora stared at the three of you, wide-awake and alert, her shoes muddy signaling she had been outside after the rainstorm as well.
"Getting water." You mumbled, lifting up two cans you had been able to fill. Shelby showed her the other one with a tight-lipped smile on her face, as disappointed as you were, but also still shaken from what had just happened back on the beach.
"We should use Fatin's suitcase to collect the rest and get it up here, then we will-"
"Yeah, about that... this is all we got."
"What do you mean?"
"The thing collapsed right when we arrived. This is all we managed to salvage."
Leah stood to the sides, her arms folded across her chest while inspecting both your faces and body language.
Nora gaped at you, unsure what to say next. Was this good? Bad? Should she have spoken up about her worries the day before? Would it have mattered? Would this now jeopardize everything?
"But no worries, we can always try again another time!" Shelby tried to keep the spirits high. She shot a quick look your way and her stomach dropped when she saw the hurt and guilt in your eyes.
It was awfully quiet, and not only because the rest of the girls were still asleep.
"It's my fault. I'm so sorry."
"I mean, I'm sure you did your best? You didn't want this to happen." Nora gave you a hesitant smile.
"It's something. Better than nothing, right?" Toni yawned and stretched after having been woken up and listening in on the conversation.
"I suppose."
"Shut up, I'm trying to sleep."
"Yeah, shut it."
"You guys slept? I'm one block of ice!"
Dot sighed and sat up. Although too sleepy to realise what was going on, she knew what she was going to say next was the right decision, "Listen, I don't know about you guys, but this was definitely my last night in the cave."
"Hallelujah," Fatin grumbled out against the makeshift pillow she had made with her hoodie.
It was safe to say that the cave hadn't been the best shelter. It might have kept you from getting drenched by rain or from getting blow-dried by the wind, but it was extremely cold during the night and the bats didn't make your stay any more pleasant.
After each girl had taken her time to wake up, the trek down to the beach was made again.
The sun burned holes in the morning fog. Periodically, the girls would scan the horizon for signs of a ship or a plane, but there was nothing but endless open ocean.
"Well, it's something." Dot stared at the three soda cans on the ground which had now all been boiled and cooled off. Three cans. That was all that you had been able to provide for them. You had failed, majorly, but you didn't want to keep saying sorry.
Fatin reached to grab one and lifted it in the air, "Down the hatch-"
Shelby stopped her, "Why are you taking the first sip?"
Fatin rolled her eyes and handed the can to Shelby, "You go then."
"No, I don't want to go first. I don't mind waiting for my turn."
Fatin furrowed her brows, clearly not getting why Shelby was making a problem, "Then why-"
"-You could have asked," Shelby muttered under her breath, awkwardly digging her feet in the sand.
"Dear Shelby, would you like the honour of taking the very first sip of this holy water?"
"Okay, you don't have to make fun of me. I was only trying to point out your lack of manners. There's nine of us, not just you."
"Jesus, who pissed in your coffee this morning? Sorry that my thirst was clouding my mind." Fatin turned to the group, "In honour of Shelby's reminder that I was raised by wolves, I'd like to present a toast to-"
"Fatin-"
"Fine. Cheers." She said, and guzzled the fresh rainwater. She smiled after the sip, but suddenly her eyes grew large and she grabbed at her throat. Collectively, the girls took a step back. Only you kept standing in your place, unsure of what to do. You had your arms outstretched awkwardly, ready to catch her.
She gurgled, groaned, but then she grinned.
With a scowl on your face, you gave her a push. All the girls let out sighs of relief.
Fatin laughed, "Could use a slice of orange or lemon but it's delish if you ignore the aftertaste."
"Not funny! I thought you were done for and that it was my fault because it was my idea to drink the rainwater!" You mumbled out but secretly enjoyed when Fatin threw an arm around you and pulled you against her.
With her cheek pressed against your head, she smacked a playful smooch on your hair, "Knew I had weaselled my way into your heart."
Shelby clenched her jaw, not being able to push the jealousy away. She wanted that. With you. She wanted you to let her, to see her how you had before. She wanted you. Then her hand flew to the cross around her neck again, and she suddenly wasn't so sure anymore.

"I hate how we're out here again." You complained, "So out in the open."
Dot nodded and accepted the help of Toni while you started to make work of setting up a new campfire.
"Not my pick either. Carnivores aren't the deadliest force in the wild, you know?"
"Don't make me guess what is."
"Exposure. Slow killer."
"Where does thirst rank because I'm blowing through my stash."
"Hard not to. There's nothing to drink."
You swallowed, feeling guilty again. After motioning to Dot that the campfire was ready to set alight, you went to sit down next to Rachel, who eyed the black box beside her.
"It's so stupid."
"Hm? What is?"
"That this thing is working but we're still out here."
"Maybe we're in the Bermuda Triangle."
She shot you a look, "I'm not fucking joking. I want off."
"Don't we all?"
"You seemed happy to settle down with that water collecter of yours." She tantalised and nudged your knee.
You groaned, "Stop reminding me of my failures."
"You put in the work, the effort." She seized you up and down, "You're not so bad after all."
"That's what you say now. We still haven't had our third-time's-a-charm argument."
"And that's how it'll stay. I'm too tired of fighting."
"But not for daily workouts?"
She scrunched up her nose at the fact you didn't understand her drive or passion, "I have a championship in Tokyo in two weeks. I need to be prepared."
"Are you seriously willing to compete in that after all this?"
"Of course I am."
"Wow, I feel like I don't want to do anything for the next year after we get home."
"That's where we're different." She said in a way you couldn't quite place. It made you feel shamed, and berated.
"Careful now. Let's not start that argument."
Rachel's eyes drifted to Nora, who was collecting twigs for tinder.
"You're not close, are you?"
"We're very different, but she's my sister."
Dot went to work on the campfire, Toni started to organise whatever was around and you let out a heavy sigh when Shelby appeared next to you.
"Y/N, a word, please?" Her face was serious and it had sounded more like a demand than a question, but you had been pushed into corners too often and did not like this approach one bit. Besides, you had a hunch what she wanted to talk about, and you weren't having it.
"I'm actually going with Fatin."
Fatin looked up at the mention of her name, and rose her eyebrows in surprise before nodding as soon as she caught on, "Yeah, get over here, Bon."
With her shampoo in hand, she walked up to the water. You followed suit, wanting to get away from Shelby.
"So, are you still annoyed with her or is there something else going on that I need to know about?"
"Still annoyed."
Fatin hummed softly, her face betraying what she really thought.
"Hey..."
"Hey, get in, you!"
Nora approached. Fatin gestured for her to come over. The girl walked into the water and let out a soft sigh and the cooling effect it had.
You were about to do the same when Shelby walked up to the three of you, head held high and a smile on her face as if there was nothing wrong.
"Gonna see if Toni needs a hand." You quickly muttered an excuse under your breath before leaving.
Shelby watched you walk away, the smile turned into a sour frown.
"Here." The bottle of shampoo was pushed against Shelby's chest. She looked at it, puzzled, until Fatin continued, "You must be smelling like a fucking trashcan for her to keep avoiding you like the plague."
"She- I'm not-"
"It's a joke. Lighten up. Time for a quick whore bath."
"Excuse me, what's a whore bath?"
Nora grinned softly, "Just the pits, tits and the slits."
Shelby chuckled softly, a bit shocked at the answer and the fact those words had come from Nora's mouth.
Fatin laughed, "You're lowkey really edgy, aren't you? See, Shelby? Even Nora knew."
"Wait- why do I feel like I'm being ganged up on- Oh what the hell is touching me!" Shelby ran through the water at the tickle on her thigh.
Nora grabbed the mystery item out of the water, "Fuego."
"Takis!"
โ˜พ โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:ยท๏พŸ .: โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ: .โ‹†
"Okay, listen up for a sec. We're all real sick of eating macadamia nuts, right? And here we have something that everybody wants with no surefire owner. So, I say that we look at these Takis as a grand prize and we play for them!" Shelby flailed excitedly. Multiple groans were heard from the circle of girls.
Leah sighed, hungrily eyeing the bag of crisps, "Can't we just eat them?"
"Yeah, seriously, she's gone full youth group counsellor on us." Fatin added.
But Rachel kept quiet, liking the idea of a challenge, and never one to back down from a game, "Play what?"
"Three words! Shelter building contest!" Shelby enunciated, waiting to see each girl's reaction. The reactions went from very excitedโ€” Dot โ€” to not amused at all โ€” Toni. You bit your lip, somewhat excited that you were finally going to get a proper shelter.
"We'll split into two teams, right, and whoever builds the best, most durable one wins."
"Yeah, so... we're with nine. How do we make even teams?"
"Easy. I'm out. There you have your even number." Rachel spoke, suddenly not excited at all, "How many times do I have to say it? I'm not trying to make myself at home here. I want to leave."
Nora piped up from her spot in the circle, "We won't survive without shelter, Rachel, and the universe has a wicked sense of humour. Rescue will probably show up as soon as we finish." It pained her to have to say it.
"If you built it, they will come!" Dot used her narrator's voice.
Shelby laughed, glad that at least someone seemed excited about her idea.
"Come on, Field of Dreams? It's like a brilliant film."
"Come on, Rach."
"Fuck it, I'll play." She sighed out annoyed, a completely opposite reaction to Shelby who clapped her hands and grinned widely,
"All righty, then, let's do this!"
Dot's hand immediately went up, "I volunteer as one of the team leaders."
"Any other volunteers?"
"Didn't you say you built shelters when you were a Girl Scout?" Dot put the attention on you.
"You were a Girl Scout?!" Fatin smirked, already enough playful jokes on the tip of her tongue, ready to be released.
"Yeah, I was. If no one else is willing, then count me in."
Shelby smiled, glad you were agreeing to loosen up.
"But we're still with nine, how do we make even teams?"
"We'll toss for it. The one who gets tails gets to have an additional player. And let's switch it up a bitโ€” the last person chosen gets to pick next. It'll mix things up that way."
"Fine by me. I pick tails."
"Hey! I always pick tails. It's my lucky side."
You grinned at Dot, "Should've been faster."
A coin was tossed in the air and Shelby gave the deliberating answer, "Tails. Y/N chooses first."
"Fatin." You immediately blurted out, wanting someone you felt comfortable around on your team. Shelby had to downplay her grimace.
"You could have had five working people in your team and you choose Fatin who probably won't do shit? My team's so gonna win this." Dot teased.
"Rude? I'll have you know that I can make myself very useful if need to be."
Dot poked her tongue out, and then she looked around the group of girls. "Well, I want the W, so Rachel."
"Fatin, you're next."
"Right. I pick Shelby."
"Me?!" Shelby rose her eyebrows, "Why me?"
You paled and glared at Fatin, knowing she was up to something by the mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
"Didn't you say we had to switch things up a bit? Well, I know I normally would have never picked you so tadaa, there you got your random mix."
Shelby didn't know if she should smile or not so she just walked over and stood beside you, leaving some distance between.
Eventually, the teams were made and you stood to playfully glare at Dot before returning to Team Warriorsโ€” to Fatin, Shelby, Leah and Nora. The rules were simpleโ€” build a shelter and do it by sunset. The axe would be shared, and all other materials were finders keepers.
"So, Miss Do A Good Turn Daily- enlighten us with the plan?"
"You're going to keep teasing me with that, aren't you?"
"You got it." Fatin playfully rose her eyebrows and watched your annoyed expression.
"Hey, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having been a Girl Scout, I myself-"
"Let's just get to it." You cut Shelby off. She looked baffled and hurt. "Since the wind gets pretty rough up here, we need something incredibly stable. Either we dig the logs very deep into the sand, or we build it against the rocks over there so they take on most of the wind-" You turned around to point, "We can lean it against the rocks diagonally and make it long so that each girl has some space. Other ideas are welcome as well, since I learned my lesson when I wanted to do it by myself last time."
Nora grinned awkwardly, "Sounds good? But maybe we should first see what we can find and then pick the better option? There might not be enough material for that to work."
"What would we even need?" Leah asked.
Nora thought out loud and scanned the area, "Thick logs for the structure? Large leaves or whatever we can find to close it off, fronds and whatnot, and maybe stuff that we already have?"
"Do you want to use the emergency slide?"
You shrugged, "Maybe. Unless it's too heavy again."
"Okay, I say we go out and get these things!" Shelby smiled again, having recovered from your rude interruption, "Y/N, want to go help me look for logs?"
"No, I've done enough heavy lifting yesterday. I'm going to look for whatever dry branches we can use to make knots."
She cleared her throat, "All right, um- where's Fatin?"
"Right here." Fatin approached, having collected Marcus from the campfire, "Now we're not with five but with six. We're totally going to fucking win this thing."
"All right, the more the merrier."
She wiped two black eyeshadow strokes onto his chest with the pad of her thumb, "Now he's a total fucking warrior." She sat down next to him, one arm around Marcus and bringing her can of La Croix to her mouth with the other.
"What will you be doing?" Leah crossed her arms over her chest, "Why are you just sitting there?"
"Since I was so good at supervising last time, I think I'm gonna do just that. Keep things organised, you know?"
"It's fine, she can just chill here." You spoke up, but Leah wasn't having it.
"No, she can't do something, like, not constructive."
Shelby stepped forward, "Y'all- let's not argue over this."
"Fatin, if you want you can come with me?" Nora asked, already hating the smell of an argument, "I'm going to see if we can get the emergency slide?"
"You got it." Fatin nodded, then turned to Leah, "Is that constructive enough for you?"

There was no denying that Mother Nature had really done her best on this island, but it was the situation that made you hate its guts. The constant chirping and screeching of birds were annoying, and so were the heat and the many insects leaving you with itchy bites. You slapped another buzzing creature away from you before you dropped to the ground to start pulling at the dry vines that had wrapped their way around the root of a tree.
"If you're hoping to dig up some pirate's treasure, I think you'll end up empty-handed."
Fatin's voice startled you. Upon turning around, you saw her standing behind you, a small smile on her face.
"There's more around that tree."
"Oh, thanks."
The two of you walked together in silence, picking up whatever seemed useful.
"You know I wouldn't have thrown a fit had you decided to stay back. No one blames you for taking some rest. You didn't need to come help me to show you were putting in the work."
"Are you sure?" Fatin laughed, knowing the others wouldn't be so kind, "It's fine. I wanted to come."
"Why?"
"So you'd have a friend with you," She shrugged, matter-of-factly and walked further.
Her statement stopped your movements and you watched her walk away. You had never really had a close friend, so this kind gesture silenced you in surprise. She noticed and stopped her step to turn and look at you.
"Do you miss it?"
"Hm?"
"Do you miss the world out there? I mean, I've been really missing my phone today."
"My phone is actually the last thing I miss. It's weird, I know." You added after the look she gave you.
You worked together in silence for another minute, before you finally felt safe enough to open up. Fatin had proven she could be trusted. So far, at least. And you would be lying if you said you didn't like her company.
"I miss my little sister."
She looked up, her eyes soft when she realised you were speaking from the heart.
"I miss my grandparents. Maybe I even miss school. Just the... boring hamster-wheel of life?"
"Really? Yuck. Can't relate."
"Well, school was better than the alternative for me."
"How so?"
You shook your head, letting her know that topic was off-limits for now. Although it was tempting, she kept her mouth shut.
"You don't miss your parents?" She suddenly noted.
"Do you?" You deflected.
"I mean, I don't fucking know anymore. They sent me here unwillingly because they thought it would get me back on the right track so that gives you an indication of where we left things."
"What did you do that made them think you needed the retreat?"
"Honestly? I think they hated how they had no longer control over me. They'd rather let me suffocate in a sound-proof rehearsal room than let me be a teenager and let me go out and have fun. I play the cello, by the way." She clarified when she saw the quizzical look you sent her, "Why did your parents send you?"
"They didn't."
"Then who did?"
"It's a long story. One that should be told with a beer on a rooftop and not while sweat is streaming down my back."
"Oh, I'll hold you to that then. Not to the beer, more to a glass of pinot." She smiled, and although she tended to be noisy, she respected your boundaries this time.
You playfully rolled your eyes, of course.
"So, your little sister, huh? How old is she?"
"Five, almost six," You cleared your throat, "Within three weeks."
"Don't worry, we'll be long off this island before that," She gave you a reassuring smile, "I have two younger brothers myself. Little shits, but I love them nonetheless."
"It's hard not to love them when they're still young, huh?"
"I mean, I guess. Not always, though. Do your parents also make you take on this responsible sister role when they're around? It's bullshit, really, how they use that as an excuse to want to control my behaviour."
"It doesn't hurt to set a good example?" You shrugged.
"Oh... are you one of those goodie-two-shoes?"
"If only you knew," You muttered out, grinning at the look on Fatin's face.
"Okay, spill it! What is it you've done? Did you have two girlfriends at one point? Did you shoplift something? Did you run a red light? I know it's something, damnit!" She laughed.
"Professional confidentially."
"Thought we were partners in crime?"
"They'll kill me if I tell you."
"Fine, the mystery commences."
Your chuckles mixed together and faded away into the sounds of the jungle.
"Hey, so, why are you so set on nailing this shelter thing?"
"Um, I-" You sighed, but one look at Fatin's soft eyes and you knew you could trust her with this one as well, "I feel like a total mistake after everything. I want to help out, show you girls that I can deliver, that you can count on me."
She playfully bumped your shoulder, "Good to know I can."
"Yeah, of course." You stayed serious, and she caught on, nodding her head with a grateful grin.
"I know we barely know each other but you can count on me too, alright?"
"I thought you didn't do the whole girl friendship thing?"
"Eh, there aren't really any boys to befriend around here so I guess you're the second-best option. That, and if it comes down to the whole last woman standing scheme, I need strong allies."
You gave her a playful shove, almost sending her into a bush. She gasped playfully and threw a handful of dried leaves at you.

"You see this?" Gretchen pushed herself off the desk and pointed at the large screen, "A complete surprise, not anticipated, but notice how she has brought her out of her shell? How she has, in return, made her want to contribute and open up to the idea of letting go of the me-against-the-world attitude?" She clicked her fingers, "That is exactly what we're trying to prove here."
Tom nodded, feeling like he had to, as he watched the two girls snicker and have fun.
"We're not there yet, not at all, she hasn't linked up with subject 6 yet, but that will come. It's only been five days and it's already working!" Gretchen let out an ecstatic laugh, not able to believe herself,
"Five days!"

"So were you bummed your sister didn't pick you?"
"At first, maybe, but not so much now. It's nice to see her laugh. She stopped doing that back home."
"That is really big of you. Which is more than I can say for some people here."
Nora kept quiet, and watched how Shelby hacked away at the branches in front of her to rid them of their stems. Nora wasn't stupid, she was observant, so she knew exactly who Shelby meant. Nonetheless, Shelby had to rant,
"All I did was mean well and what did she do? Cut me off, ignore me and- sorry for thinking this, but she probably put Fatin against me as well. Who knows what she's said to her about me." Her throws became stronger.
"You, uh, you seem pretty angry."
"Me? Oh, no, no I don't do anger. Hey, the Lord expects us to be instruments of love." Shelby reminded her, "If I ever do feel the aggro coming on, well, my mom found me the perfect outlet. The theatre."
Shelby kept quiet for a dramatical pause.
"Let me ask youโ โ€” are you familiar with Death of a Salesman?"
"Sure, it's kind of a classic."
"Well, I haven't exactly read the whole play, but there's this monologue in it. Um..."
Nora could only sit back and watch.
"I looked at the pen, and I said to myselfโ โ€” 'What the hell am I grabbing this for? Why am I trying to become who I don't want to be?'" She took a quick peek to see if Nora was listening, "'What am I doing in an office, making a contemptuous begging fool out of myself, when all I want is out there, waiting for me, the minute I say I know who I am?'" She smiled and turned back to Nora.
"That was an avant-garde take."
"So powerful, right? The way Biff gives it to his boss."
"Oh, he's not talking to his boss. He's telling his father that he doesn't want to live for him anymore, that he wants to live his own authentic life."
"Oh." Was all Shelby said, now taking the words with a different message. One that felt too close to home, "If he's disrespecting a parent then... then that makes me like Biff a whole lot less. Guess I'll... just have to find a different monologue to work on." Her voice was small, her thoughts elsewhere.
"Hey, look who are back." Nora awkwardly changed the subject and pointed.
You appeared out of the density of the forest, with Fatin beside you, laughing and having fun. Shelby bit the inside of her cheek and kept on working on the braided roof she was making.
"Hey! What did we miss?" You asked while throwing your find onto the ground.
"We claimed the emergency slide and Leah has gone to get some leaves from those large palm trees."
"I got us some logs," Shelby spoke quietly and nudged her head to the pile of wood, "And I'm braiding this for the sides."
"Great, what now, Cap?" Fatin leaned onto your shoulder.
"I don't know, I need a potty break first." You excused yourself and walked back into the forest to find a secluded stop. Right beforeyou crouched down to take your pants off, a shadow fell over you. When you looked up and saw who it was, the shock turned to frustration.
"Jesus fucking Christ, can't a girl take a piss in peace?"
"I'll ignore you spoke His name in vain this time." She mumbled quickly before folding and unfolding her hands together. A line appeared on her forehead. She was serious about what she was going to say, "Those pills- what were they for and how did you get them and why did you take them?"
You glared at her before turning around and walking away, but she hurried to push herself in front of you, her hand on your chest to keep you in place.
"Y/N, I want to know. You need to tell me."
"I want to know so many things. Likeโ€” how did life on earth evolve? Do aliens exist or where Cleopatra's Tomb-"
"I mean it!" She rose her voice. It wavered, "I mean it. I want you to tell me."
"There's nothing to say."
"Well, do you still have them?"
"Why do you care?"
She opened her mouth, and spluttered slightly, "I just do, okay! I care! Now tell me why you would steal from the medicine bag."
"I didn't fucking steal them, Shelby, okay? I found them. I told you."
"Sorry for assuming, but where else would you find them on an island like this?!"
A tired sigh left your lips, "It was in the pilot's suitcase we found right after coming ashore."
"And you didn't tell anyone because...?!"
"Because I need them."
"For what?"
"Shelby, you're really starting to work on my-"
"Just tell me, Goddamnit!" She grabbed your wrist, and squeezed it tight, as if she could force an answer out of you that way.
You glared at each other and no word was spoken for a couple of tense seconds.
"Do you seriously have to ask me that after witnessing two of my fucking rock bottom moments?"
"You can't just pop unprescribed pills, Y/N! That's dangerous!"
"They're not unprescribed, and maybe you would have known had you not ghosted me."
Shelby dropped her hold on your wrist slightly, trying to wrap her head around it all, "All right, so, you have panic attacks? Is that what they're for?"
You whiffed your nose in the air, "I suppose."
"Why? How much- How often do you get them? Did something happen?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
"Hey- no judgement here. I just want-"
"-and I don't want to talk about it."
"Fine, maybe not now but-"
"-not ever. You wouldn't understand."
Shelby reclined and took a step back to look at you, "Seriously? I wouldn't understand? Even if I haven't gone through something similar, you know me better than that I wouldn't do my absolute best to listen and help you."
"You wouldn't believe me anyway."
"Try me." She folded her arms over her chest.
"I take them because I'm fucking scared, all right? All day long I'm filled with anxiety and tension and I-"
"That's understandable. There's nothing to be ashamed of. We're all scared and that's why we-"
"No! See! You don't understand because I would love to just only be scared about having to survive on this island, thinking if they'll come for us or not!"
"They will. Come for us." Shelby reassured, "Y/N, please, talk to me?"
You dropped your head and stared at your feet. She was using that voice again, was looking at you with pain and worry in her eyes. Goddamn you, Shelby.
"I take them because of things that happened back home." You said through gritted teeth, having to push the words out of you that way. "I stopped taking them, but I always took them with me, just in case."
"With the added stress and trauma of the island, you feel like you need them?"
"I mean, having them by hand gives me some sense of security and safety? A reassurance that I'll be fine?"
"I don't know what happened to you and I don't want to know unless you feel like you want to share it with me, but please know that you can come to me whenever you feel terrible like that."
Your voice broke, "Shelby, I can't. Because each time we talk I have to hate you."
She stood there, at a loss for words, but at the same time understanding you.
"Um, well, but-" She stammered, "I'm sure the girls will understand if they know, if you have to take them, but wouldn't it be better to give them to Dot so they're safely kept in one place?" She softly grazed her fingertips over your underarm, "Please, be honest with meโ€” how many times have you taken one of those pills on the island?"
"Not once."
"Were you ever close to taking one?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you?"
You clenched your jaw, suddenly realising who had stopped you both times.
"Did the reason you wanted to take one have anything to do with why you got them prescribed in the first place?"
"That's irrelevant."
Suddenly, you felt prickly and you tensed up at the feeling of being interrogated, "Maybe you should mind your own business." You snapped and snatched your hand away.
Shelby let out a dry, sarcastic chuckle, "You know what? Maybe I should."
"Fine."
"All right."
She shook her head in disbelief before leaving.

Shelby softly sang a song under her breath while stabilising the logs into the sand, with the help of Nora. Fatin was braiding leaves for the walls and roof with Leah next to her who was working on getting rid of the rocks and pebbles on the ground so the ground would be nice to sit on. Team Visor had the axe now, which left you having to knot logs and branches together for more stability.
Fatin looked up from her work, "What's that knot called, Girl Scout?"
Before you could reply, the knot made with dried vines broke and the overhead log fell down, making Leah jump away to safety.
"Knot it." You let out a dry chuckle.
"Wow, that was a horrible joke."
"You good, Leah?"
"Yeah, I'm all right."
Shelby let out a content sigh, "You know what? I like this little activity. In some weird, messed up way, it's making me relax. Don't you agree?" She watched your faces to get a reaction, but none of you mirrored the same excited expression.
Nora shrugged, "It's better than sitting around, I guess."
The others, including you, who hadn't even spared her a glance, kept quiet, making Shelby turn back to work.
"How's it going with Team Visor over there?"
"Seems like Toni is wanting to play boss but Rachel isn't having any of it-" You shielded your eyes as you gazed at the other side of the beach, "-and Dot has given up reasoning and has started without them. Martha seems torn."
"Yup. We're winning this."
"Knock on wood!" Shelby rushed to get out, "This thing ain't done yet and for all we know, it can still collapse the moment we're done."
โ˜พ โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:ยท๏พŸ .: โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ: .โ‹†
Three hours later, the Team Warriors shelter was done. The shelter was smaller than expected, a little drafty due to one of the sides being open which served as an entrance, but it seemed strong enough to take on the wind. The six of you, including Marcus, sat shoulder to shoulder in a long line as you tried it out.
"Could've used a scenic view." Leah shrugged, poking at the leaves and branches blocking her view of the ocean.
"Maybe we should've let another side open. If one of us needs to pee, everyone needs to stand up."
"No, we're not starting again. I was happy it was finally done." Fatin groaned and let her head fall back against the rocks.
"If we keep another side open, the wind is going to blow us out."
"Actually, our shelter isn't so bad. The wind hits the rocks-" Nora knocked on the rock wall she was resting against, "It pushes our shelter against a solid base. Their shelter is in the direct line of the wind and therefore at risk of blowing away. And, if we want to, we can lie down." She shimmied down the sand to demonstrate and now rested on her back, looking at the leaf roof above her.
"What if you're suffocating a family of tiny shrimp right now?"
Leah laughed at Fatin and nudged the curly-haired girl next to her, "Never pegged you as someone to commit familicide, Nora."
Nora smiled slightly, not knowing what to say back.
Yelling sudenly echoed over the beach and all five of your heads perked out of the shelter to see what was up. Toni was angrily hacking away at the shelter with an axe.
"Ouch!"
"Wait- hello?!"
"What the fuck, Fatin-"
Fatin crawled over you all until she got to the exit.
"Where are you going?"
"Getting us those fucking Takis."
โ˜พ โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:ยท๏พŸ .: โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ: .โ‹†
The sun had gone down and the nine of you sat together in your shelter. Being the team leader, you took it upon yourself to open the bag of Takis and start passing it around.
"But we didn't win." Martha eyed the Takis with hunger in her eyes, so you nudged her again to take one.
"That doesn't matter."
"We're all in this clusterfuck together."
Dot made a face after taking a bite, "Not as good as I thought they would be."
The bag passed Leah, "All I taste is dry."
"Hey, mind if I have some?" Rachel asked her, "And I'll be careful to not make any sudden movements, you know? You might be pretty jumpy sitting next to a psychopath."
Leah's eyes immediately bored into Fatin's, who kept her gaze down, pretending like nothing was wrong.
Shelby cleared her throat, ready to get rid of the tension, "I say we initiate our shelter with a little game. Who's in?"
Rachel and you groaned, and Toni muttered under her breath, "Here we fucking go again."
"Truth or dare? How about that?"
"If we play, will you promise that this will be the last game we'll ever play?"
"In this shelter, sure."
Dot sighed, "Well, good enough for me. Truth."
"Who was your first kiss with?" Shelby prepped herself up and leaned in.
Dot only groaned, "Oh great. Here we go. His name was Mateo Caliente."
"Oh! Sounds spicy, was he in your class?"
"No... um, actually, he um, helped nurse my dad."
The girls quieted down, saw the look on Dot's face and knew they shouldn't push further.
"Shelby, truth or dare." Toni had a wicked grin on her face, making Shelby shift in her place. It seemed like whatever she would choose would be a bad option, "Wait, I'll go, I know you're gonna pick truth anyway since you're such a-"
"-Dare. I pick dare." Shelbly glared at Toni.
She crossed her fingers that Toni wouldn't do anything that wouldโ€”
"I dare you to kiss the prettiest girl."
Shelby let out a breathy but awkward chuckle, "You see- I can't do that one because looks are superficial and don't matter to me. Someone's pure beauty... is what's inside their heart." She spoke like a true pageant queen and topped it off with a wonderful smile.
"Knew you'd be too much of a pussy."
Shelby clenched her jaw, glared Toni down for another couple of seconds before her eyes shifted over the girls. She didn't have to look at you to know she found you the most enchanting of them all. But admitting that would send her to her doom.
"Martha, get over here-"
Martha's eyes widened.
"You can't pick a friend. That's cheating"
"Well, truth be told, you are all my friends so-"
"Just fucking pick one of us and goooo for it!" Fatin hollered, receiving claps and whoops from the other girls who cheered Shelby on.
She looked at her lap, opened her mouth to come up with something but closed it again, "Sorry, but I don't like this dare."
"See? Shit's too gay for her." Toni scoffed.
The smiles and laughter stopped. Everyone stared at Shelby to see her reaction. When she kept quiet, Fatin decided to move on.
"Y/N, Bon-bon, truth or dare?"
"Truth?"
"Who's Riley?"
Shelby's head shot up and you licked your lips and looked away, anticipating what to say.
"Is she that ex of yours? Forgive me for thinking but you play with that bracelet all the fucking time."
"You're noisy."
She winked at you, "Just honest, baby."
"She um, she's my little sister." You nodded your head, "Yeah, Riles made this for me for Mother's Day."
"Why would she give that to you and not to your mother?"
"I'm pretty sure that's another question and it's not my turn anymore."
Fatin playfully rolled her eyes, "Fine. I dare anyone to give me a spare sip of their drink. I just tapped out."
"That's not how the game works."
"Dude, we're all running low," Dot pointed out, "You're supposed to manage your own rations."
"How did you get so thirsty? It's not like you were exerting yourself." Leah shot back.
"She helped me in the woods." You decided to back Fatin up.
"That was, like, what? Ten minutes? Out of four hours?"
"It could be the sodium bicarbonate."
"You know what, I'm sick of hearing this shit. Let me ask you something, all of you. Whose hypoallergenic pyjamas were shredded to bind together longs? And whose sweaters are keeping you ingrates from freezing?"
There it was. The thing you had been so afraid of. You slowly slipped her jacket off your shoulders, no longer comfortable wearing it.
She continued, "Some people provide goods. Some provide services. I'm a goods provider, therefore I get a pass on the services."
"That is such bullshit!" Leah spat. "You're a goods provider because you had the stupid good fortune to find your fucking bag."
"You need to get your fucking talons out of my back, girl. For your own health."
Everyone fell silent.
"Can I please just have someone's drink? A sip!?"
"We vote." Leah shrugged, "Anyone who wants to give up a drink they carefully saved for somebody who did jack shit all day, raise your hand."
You couldn't help but play with the can in your lap, wanting to give it to Fatin, but with the additional girls sitting around, you chickened out. They liked you, what if they wouldn't anymore after that? But Fatin was the closest person you had to a friend, and she had had your back too, and she had given you her jacket. Surely, you had to repay her for that and she had... your thinking had gone on for too long.
Fatin stood up with a huff,
"Oh my God. You know what? I'm out of here." She crawled over all of you, accidentally kneeing some girls in the process but she couldn't care less, "Move."
"Should we go after her?" Martha wondered.
"No. Fuck her." Leah's statement got every silent, but you had made up your mind.
Leah stopped you, "Really, Y/N? You worked your ass off for two days straight and you're going to give her your drink?"
"I'm going for a pee."
"Sure, you are." You heard Shelby mutter and you could practically feel her eyes roll in annoyance.
"I thought your Lord taught you to share."
And with that, you climbed out of the shelter. Fatin sat on her suitcase, staring into the flames of the fire.
"Here. Take a sip. Or two or three." You gave her a small smile when she looked up, shocked and puzzled at the same time, "Or four."
"I don't want yours." She pushed it back.
"Don't get picky now." A small laugh left your mouth, "I promise I don't have some weird disease either."
"Where's your jacket?" She asked when she saw you shiver in the wind.
"It's your jacket, Fatin."
She kept quiet until her expression changed. It suddenly clicked for her. "That's why you're offering, aren't you?"
You shrugged merely, "I mean, it's only right that I repay you."
She shook her head, "No, Y/N. I'm new to this too but even I know that that's not how a friendship works."
You bit the inside of your cheeks, but couldn't help but feel wanted at the realisation she called this, your bond, a friendship.
"Sure, it's giving and taking, but not this literal! Shit!" She stood up, "I gave you my jacket because I looked out for you, not because I wanted something from you in return. And I don't want even one fucking sip of your drink if the only reason you're offering is to repay me. That's not how we're going to do this thing." She huffed. She was still annoyed from the confrontation inside the shelter and had let some of that steam go off at you. She looked at you for a couple of seconds, but when you didn't reply, she left.
You watched and hated how your lip was trembling. The only thing that felt like the right move to you now, was to go to your rock.
Once there, your thoughts immediately drifted off to Riley as you played with the bracelet around your wrist. What was she thinking? Was she worried? Mad? Scared, now that she didn't have you? How were your grandparents? Had your grandpa burned something down again, on accident? Had he been bathed? Had your grandma been able to take her medications? Who would pick a new set of them up next week? Who would pay the bills? Who would feed them? Who would bring Riley to school and pick her up? Riley. Oh, how you missed her.
Silent tears dripped down your cheeks. As you sat there, listening to the crashing of the waves and the wind blowing in your face, you let out a dry chuckle. But your peace was interrupted, once more.
"I came to say sorry."
You squeezed your eyes at the familiar voice beside you.
"God, you're like a fucking yo-yo aren't you?!"
Shelby rose her eyebrows at your immediate outburst.
"I can't follow you anymore!"
"Well, it's not like you haven't changed. Wait-" She took a measured step closer, "Why are you crying?"
"Riley." Your chin wobbled and you quickly wiped your nose, "The pills. This island. I want to go home but also really don't. Disappointing Fatin. Not knowing what to do with you."
"You make it sound like I'm some problem you can't get rid of."
"Aren't you? You keep popping up."
"Why, thanks." Shelby rolled her eyes, "Have you never stopped to think why that would be?"
You shrugged.
"Well, think about it. Then we can talk again. I don't want to be a burden or make you even madder than you already seem to be. Good night, Y/N. Sleep well. Don't stay out here too long."
You wiped your tears with your sleeve as your eyes followed her walk back to the fire.

Day 16
Tumblr media
PREVIOUS
"Here they are, the brave young women whose tale of struggle and survival has gripped the nation." The host says as she sends the camera a smile. "The unsinkable nine, as we have come to know them. Ladies, you must have dreamed of coming home for so long. Now that you're here, what do you wanna do most?" She questions as she turns towards you and your friends. "Honestly, smoke about a hundred cigs, you know? Like, really rip through a carton or two." Dot starts as she leans forwards on the couch. The host gives her a slightly awkward smile, "Okay. How about the rest of you?"
"I don't know; Maybe hit up the OG for a never-ending pasta bowl and just... I don't know... Get back to our real lives." Toni says next followed by Nora. "I'd like to read the Odyssey again, rather than, like, live it." She jokes awkwardly, causing some of the girls to laugh in response. "Leah, what about you?" "Oh, um, I just wanna reconnect with certain people... People who may have been worried and-or felt like we had unfinished business. And if that person is watching right now, I just wanna say that I did not not miss you every day." You cringe at Leah's little monologue, still not feeling 100% about her after her fight with Shelby.
"My turn, Brooke, and I've got a nice, straight answer for you. I'm going to fuck the rowdiest guy with the biggest dick as soon as I fucking can." Fatin says, causing everyone to pause the fantasy you all shared and look at Fatin. Fatin turned to look at you, since you were at the end of the couch, and you couldn't contain your laugh. "Holy shit!" You belt out as you roll onto your side, "I don't think you can say that." You tell her after you finally catch your breathe. Fatin rolls her eyes, "Okay, make it more media-friendly. I am going to fornicate with the healthiest penis I can find ASAP." You let out a laugh at her newly formed answer.
After that, Dot changed her answer and Fatin got on Leah for her "emo shit show" answer and how Romeo's would be in everyone's DM's, before they finally started cheering over the fact that there was a chance to return home. "We're going home, bitches!" Martha yells as she holds up the bottle of vodka, causing all the other girls to cheer. You go to celebrate with them but notice how Shelby stays silent and slowly pulls away from the group. You watch her go, debating if you should follow her, as Toni helps you stand. Her face holds a large smile that slowly falls as she notices how distracted you are and that Shelby was walking away.
Ever since kissing Shelby, Toni had been confused on her feelings between the both of you. She had loved you for years but Shelby just had something so attracting about her. Unknown to her, you were having the same thoughts. "I'll, um... I'll be right back." You say as you pat Toni's hands that were still holding your own after helping you up. Toni just nods her head as you hop away after Shelby.
---
"You don't seem very excited..." You try and joke as you hop around the rock Shelby was sitting on, closing your mouth as soon as you see how sad she looks. You fidget nervously for a few seconds as Shelby doesn't respond to your presence. You let out a deep breathe before sitting down next to Shelby on the rock. "Are you okay?" You ask as you slowly reach out your hand to grabs hers. You move slowly so she has enough time to pull away but she doesn't. When you tangle your fingers with Shelby's, she finally reacts some and turns her head to look at you. She opens and closes her mouth a few times wanting to say something, but ultimately ends up closing it and shaking her head. You let out a sigh but nod your head. You lean forwards and cup one of her cheeks, giving her a quick kiss on the other one. Your face gains a small smile as you notice Shelby blush, "I'll leave you to your thoughts... If you ever need someone to vent to or a shoulder to lean on I'll be here." You tell her as you slowly stand up and start hopping back towards to other girls, missing how Shelby stared after you longingly.
---
As you get closer to the other girls, you smile as you hear them all laughing and joking around. "Oh, Martha, you're gonna be trippin motherfucking balls dude." You hear Fatin say as you finally reach the group and collapse next to Toni. Hopping around was not fun and you were going to need to find a walking stick or something soon. "And she won't be alone." Rachel says as she holds her hand out towards Fatin. Taking what looks to be a bag of gummy bears? You nudge Toni with your shoulder and send her a questioning look. "Martha ate edibles." She whispered to you before turning back to the group and reaching for the bag. You covered your mouth in shock and laughed at the fact that Martha, sweet and innocent Martha, ate edibles. "You want one y/n?" Toni asks as she holds one out towards you. You think about it for a second. Your doctors back at home would probably advise you not to get high but you had been feeling fine the past few days. "Why not." You answer as you take the gummy bear from Toni and pop it into your mouth.
---
"Marcus!?" You hear Martha yell out for the 5th time as almost everyone laid on the beach, high out of their minds. The only ones not laying down were Fatin, who looked like she was meditating, Shelby, who still hadn't returned from the rock, and you, who had taken a seat on Toni's back and kept tracing out random letters and shapes on her back. "I'm so fucking blissed out. Not even from the gummies, just from the thought that in 48 hours I can have an orgasm." Was the first thing Fatin had said in an hour, causing you to giggle and almost fall off of Toni's back. Unlike Toni, who always got more relaxed when she was high, you got more giggly, enthusiastic, and talkative. You being high rivaled Shelby's whole "Who wants to play an ice breaker?" persona.
"Wait? You haven't like self-induced?" Leah asks, seriously but still with a playful tone. "No, I can't do it with my hands actually. I have this weird cello-vibrato PTSD. It's a whole thing." Fatin responds, breezing over the subject. "So your electric toothbrush hasn't seen any action?" Dot asks causing you to laugh more and add on, "I mean we all kind of assumed." You send a wink Fatin's way before turning your attention back to Toni's back, effectively spacing out on the conversation.
When you do focus back onto everyone, it's from Toni tapping your thigh to get you to get up. "Huh?" "C'mon we're gonna go play in the water." Instead of standing up and hopping your way towards the ocean, you just roll of Toni's back and lay on your back in the sand. "I'm good... I think I'm just gonna lie here." Toni gives you a questioning look but you just push her thigh towards the water. "I'll be fineeeee, go have funnnnn." Toni rolls her eyes as you purposefully draw out words and follows the rest of the girls into the water.
You could hear the girls from where you laid, all of them letting out screams and laughs of joy. You would have joined but hopping around on one leg isn't fun and tired you out pretty quickly. You rolled onto your side once the sun felt too hot on your face and you noticed that Shelby hadn't joined in on the fun either. You contemplated going up to her and trying to talk to her or give her more space, but went with the first choice. If she had rejoined the group than maybe she would want some company now.
---
"Not a fan of the water?" You ask as you let yourself collapse next to Shelby, taking note how she now had the bottle of vodka and it had a less in it than it did before. "I... Um..." Shelby stuttered out as she purposefully did not make eye contact with you. "It's fine." You say with a shrug and lay on your side. "No need to talk, just relax." You say as you suddenly get hype fixated on making shapes and letters on her back. Missing the way she tensed up before finally relaxing. You spaced out again from what was going on, a common thing that happened when you were high.
---
The rest of the day blew by as everyone did their own thing. Nora and Rachel went off talked somewhere, you noticed that Toni and Shelby got into a argument, and you just chilled around with Fatin, Dot, and Leah, while Martha decided to adventure into the woods. "Guys! Guys! Guess what I just saw!?" Martha yells as she runs over the hill and back towards the group. "I just saw Marcus and he's alive!" She yells out, out of breath, causing everyone to laugh at how ridiculous she sounded. "No, guys, I'm being serious!" Martha defends and grabs the nearest person to her, Dot, and starts dragging her along. "C'mon, he's in the woods." Dot turns to give the group and exasperated look but you all decide to follow along.
You had your arm wrapped around Toni as you all journeyed through the woods. You had tried to get out of going, but Martha wanted everyone to go with her. "You're just saying that he, like, fucking pinocchio'd?" Dot asks, having not stopped laughing or joking about the situation since you all headed into the woods. "Yes. That is exactly what I am saying." Martha says in relief, missing that fact that Dot was still making fun of her. "He turned into a real boy." She finishes as you and Toni see Marcus... Who is still as fake as he was the day he was found. "I don't know, he kinda looks the same to me." Toni says as you release her arm so she can pick up Marcus. "Hey! My leg!" You say excitedly as you notice it laying under Marcus. When Fatin goes to kiss Marcus, you kiss your leg. It was all fun and games until Leah had to mention the fact that Marcus and your leg had been swept away but suddenly ended up in the middle of the forest. You had thought the same thing but hoped to just ignore that fact. "Leah. We're mellow. We're leaving."
---
"Oh Shelby, you love America so much. USA! USA!" Martha cheers, trying to get Shelby to join her but the other girl is completely zoned out. "Is she okay?" You and Toni ask at the same time. Both of you sharing an awkward look with each other, neither of you had told the other about your own kiss with Shelby. Luckily, Fatin isn't stuck in an unknown love triangle and walks over to Shelby. You all watch as Shelby starts to brush her hair, it seems to stay tangled no matter what she does. Until the brush gets stuck in her hair. Fatin attempts to help her but Shelby goes into full freak out mode. "It's all ruined." She says as she grabs the scissors out of Fatin's bag. Fatin attempts to stop her but Shelby was inconsolable.
"I don't' fucking want it! I don't want it!"

all for us [the wilds girls]
the wilds girls x platonic fem reader
requested:ย I love your imagines a lot, youโ€™re an amazing writer! I had a promt where maybe the reader is the youngest of all the girls and basically the younger sister they all never had and they all care and love for her very much (maybe short flashbacks with moments of her and the girls) and once their quarantine is over they realize sheโ€™s missing and it turns out she got internal injury or something else quite angsty and the girls do everything they can for her
Tumblr media

โ€œSo tell me about Y/N Y/L/N.โ€ Agent Young says.
โ€œY/N Y/L/N?โ€ Leah asks and Agent Young nods,ย โ€œWhere do I even begin?โ€ย
You were the youngest of the group. Not too much younger than them, but still younger. And just like regular siblings being the youngest had its perks and downfalls.
For one, you could never go anywhere alone. Even to pee, the girls would not let you out of their sight.ย
But, you got away with almost everything. The girls couldnโ€™t stay mad at you for too long, not even Toni could stay mad at you. And she could literally stay mad at anyone until the day she died.ย
โ€œIโ€™m taking you and her were close?โ€ Agent Fader asks.
โ€œYeah, she was close to pretty much everyone.ย Sheโ€™s like a little bean we all wanted to protect. You just wanted to squish her cheeks ever time you see her.โ€ย
โ€œLeah? What are you doing up here?โ€ you ask her, plopping down onto the sand further away from everyone.ย
She shakes her head staring out at the sun that was just beginning to set,ย โ€œJust reading the notes he left me...again. I know Iโ€™m pathetic.โ€ย
โ€œI wasnโ€™t gonna say that.โ€ you reply and she looks at you wide-eyed.
โ€œYou werenโ€™t?โ€ย
You shake your head, smiling at her a little bit,ย โ€œYou were in love. Iโ€™ve never been in love before, but when youโ€™re in love youโ€™re in love. And he dumped you which wasnโ€™t cool. I donโ€™t support your relationship with him, but itโ€™s only natural to be heartbroken over it.โ€ย
โ€œYouโ€™re wise for your age.โ€ she says, ruffling your hair.
โ€œIf I ever meet Jeffery, Iโ€™m gonna kick his ass.โ€ you warn her, looking at her dead in the eye.
โ€œYou probably can, if Iโ€™m being honest.โ€ Leah states and she lets out a small laugh.ย
Yes, mission accomplished.
You nod with your fists up, pretending to block,ย โ€œHit him with that one, two, punch. Pow. Pow pow pow!โ€ you mimic, punching the air in front of you.
Your fake fighting causes her to laugh a little louder and harder. So you decided to take it up a notch, get her distracted a little more.
You get up from where you were standing. And lift one leg up, like Daniel did in Karate Kid,ย โ€œFinish him!โ€ you yell, making your voice a little deeper.ย
Kicking your feet up in the air, however you donโ€™t stick the landing. You fall onto your back letting out a small groan and the sudden hit. Leah starts laughing uncontrollably, releasing a little snort.
That small snort causes you to start laughing along with her. Jeffery long forgotten.ย
โ€œWe heard from Leah that Y/N was close with everyone. Is this true?โ€ Fader asks.ย
โ€œOh yeah 100%.โ€ Rachel says with a nod,ย โ€œIt was like having yet another younger sister to take care of. Or well...them taking care of me.โ€ย
โ€œYou think you can beat me in a swim race.โ€ Rachel asks, staring at you like youโ€™ve just grown two horns.
You hum in response,ย โ€œYep!โ€ย
โ€œFine youโ€™re on! From this point to those rocks.โ€ she says, pointing at the rock figures in the middle of the ocean.
โ€œWho you got?โ€ Dot asks, Toni.
Toni looks at her with a small smirk on her face,ย โ€œIโ€™m gonna bet on the underdog this round. I got my Diet Coke on Squirt here!โ€ Toni gestures to you, using your annoying nickname that the girls named you after.ย
They gave you the nickname after the turtle from Finding Nemo. You pretended to hate it, but you secretly loved your embarrassing nickname.
โ€œYouโ€™re on!โ€ Dot says, shaking her hand.
โ€œOn your mark, get set...GO!โ€ Martha yells sitting along next to Marcus.
The two of you take off swimming. You start off a little slow at first trying to maintain your energy, but Rachel was the opposite. She was using everything in her power to get their as fast as she could.
When she finally started slowing down, thatโ€™s when you pushed on the gas. Moving your arms and legs in a perfect motion. Slowly, but surely you started passing her just as you made it to the rocks.
โ€œHell yeah!โ€ Toni yells.
Dot groans before throwing Toni a Diet Coke.ย
โ€œHow the hell did you do that?โ€ Rachel asks you, out of breath as the two of you sat on the rocks.
โ€œHonestly, no idea.โ€ you say with a laugh and she rolls her eyes.
โ€œRace you back!โ€ she yells, jumping into the ocean.
โ€œCheater!โ€ you yell before diving in after her.ย
Dot was slurping down her milkshake. While the two agents waited for her to stop drinking.ย
โ€œCan I have another one of these?โ€ Dot asks and Fader nods with a laugh.ย
โ€œWho do you think you wanted to protect most on the island?โ€ Young asks after Dot finishes her ten course meal.
โ€œY/N, hands down. I think that would be every girls answer.โ€ Dot explains, plopping another fry into her mouth.
All of you girls were relaxing on the beach. After two days of scavenging the jungle for any sorts of food and firewood. This was the first day all of you could just relax.
โ€œI just came up with the best idea!โ€ you exclaim.ย
It was just you and Dot. The rest of the girls were scattered all over the beach, doing their own thing.
โ€œWhat is it?โ€ she asks as your eyes had that mischievous glint to them,ย โ€œOh no. I know that look!โ€ย
โ€œWeโ€™re already stranded on a deserted island, what if we pretended we were on an episode of Naked and Afraid?!โ€ you say, excitedly.
She releases on of her famous hearty laughs,ย โ€œYou want all of us to strip down naked? You really think the girls would be up for it?โ€ย
You nod your head, multiple times,ย โ€œI bet at least 6/9 of the girls here have at least imagined one of us naked.โ€ย
Dot raises her eyebrows at you,ย โ€œAre you one of those 6?โ€ย
โ€œNo comment...โ€ you state.
After much convincing, you got the girls to have a pretend episode of Naked and Afraid. Everyone was stripping down of their clothes, looking at each other, trying to stifle a laugh.ย
The air was awkward, yet comfortable at the same time. The only awkward part was standing there unsure of what to do next.ย
โ€œY/N, you have a cute butt!โ€ Fatin exclaims, giving you a high five.
Toni sidles up next to her to get a look,ย โ€œAwe it looks like a little peach.โ€ย
You throw your face in your hands, shaking your head as a chorus full of awโ€™s fill the air.ย
Toni sat there with her arms crossed over her chest, not wanting to talk about anything to these phonies.ย
โ€œSo weโ€™ve been asking the girls their opinions on everyone else, weโ€™re gonna go one by one on the list and youโ€™ll say one word to describe them.โ€ Fader says and Toni just nods.
โ€œLeah Rilke?โ€ย
โ€œOver-thinker.โ€ Toni replies.
โ€œRachel Reid?โ€ย
โ€œDriven.โ€ย
โ€œDot Campbell?โ€ย
โ€œResourceful.โ€ย
โ€œShelby Goodkind?โ€ย
There was a moment of silence, trying to find the right words to say,ย โ€œComplex.โ€ย
โ€œMartha Blackburn?โ€ย
โ€œSister.โ€ย
โ€œY/N Y/L/N?โ€ย
Toni laughs to herself softly,ย โ€œSquirt.โ€ย
You and Toni were out in the shallow waters of the ocean. Dot sent you and Toni on an experiment to see if watch she saw on TV actually works. Where you stand out in the water and catch a fish with your bare hands.
The two of you didnโ€™t quite know the logistics on how it works, but you volunteered anyway. You were standing out, not too far away from the shore just reaching down trying to grab a fish to eat.
Each time you tried you came out short,ย โ€œYou look like an idiot right now.โ€ Toni says, laughing at you flailing your arms in and out of the water.
โ€œShut up!โ€ you say, splashing her with water.ย
โ€œYou guys arenโ€™t doing it right?!โ€ Nora yells from the shore,ย โ€œYou need to stay still and patient so the fish will come to you.โ€ย
โ€œWe literally picked the worst people for this job.โ€ Shelby says and you and Toni flip her off from where you were standing,ย โ€œYou guys literally can not stay still for the life of you. And donโ€™t even get me started on patience.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s rude!โ€ you yell at her,ย โ€œGod can hear you! Youโ€™re supposed to be nice!โ€ย
โ€œIโ€™m also supposed to be honest!โ€ Shelby shoot back and you mock her actions, before she gives you the bird herself.
โ€œHey thatโ€™s not allowed!โ€ Toni yells at her girlfriend.ย
You start laughing with Toni, pushing her slightly. She pushes you back playfully, before it turns in to a full on battle to see who can get the other to fall first. But Toni being Toni decided to just tackle you.ย
โ€œAhhhhhh!โ€ you say letting out a little screen,ย โ€œSomethingโ€™s touching me!โ€ย
โ€œPick it up! It could be a fish!โ€ Toni exclaims.
You pick up the creature and yell a little louder when it bites you, tossing it in the process,ย โ€œIt bit me!!โ€ย
โ€œY/N, itโ€™s a baby turtle!โ€ Toni exclaims,ย โ€œYou were scared of a baby turtle!โ€ย
โ€œShut the fuck up.โ€ you joke with her, but give her a serious look.ย
Toni picks up the turtle examining the cute little guy. She looks at the turtles face and then back at you doing a double take.ย
โ€œIt kinda looks like you.โ€ she says, before letting it go back into the ocean.
โ€œFuck you.โ€ you tease, tackling back into the ocean.
โ€œWe really picked the worst people.โ€ Shelby says to Nora.
Both of them shaking their heads in disappointment.
โ€œThoughts on Y/N Y/L/N?โ€
โ€œOh intern for being the baddest bitch out there.โ€ Fatin says with a smile on her face.
โ€œIntern for who?โ€ Fader asks.
โ€œMe of course.โ€ย
Nora and Rachel were currently fighting to the death. Neither you, Leah, or Martha knew what to do.
โ€œY/N come over here!โ€ Fatin says, gesturing for you to go where she was standing,ย โ€œTake this bottle of lube!โ€ย
You catch theย bottle of the lube she tossed you. And you raised your eyebrowย up at her.ย
โ€œJust follow my lead.โ€ she brings her toothbrush up to herย mouth,ย โ€œNora hasย Rachel pinned on the ground.โ€ she mocks an announcer you would hear on ESPN.
โ€œBut Rachel is not giving up too easily folks!โ€ you go along with your guysโ€™ bit,ย โ€œI donโ€™t know about you Fatin, but I have never seen a girl fight this interesting in my life!โ€ย
โ€œAgreed, usually itโ€™s just a bunch of-HOLY SHIT that was a knee to the tit ladies andย gentlemen!โ€ she yells out.ย
โ€œIs Rachel out for the count?!โ€ you add on watching the fight unfold in front of you.ย
Itโ€™sย probably not the best time to make jokes, butย you all need to let loose once in awhile.
โ€œWait...sheโ€™s getting up!โ€ Fatin yells.
โ€œOh my gosh sheโ€™s not...OUCH! That was knee to the twat!โ€ you yell wincing at the pain that was just brought uponย Nora.
โ€œY/N, how do you feel about this fight?โ€ Fatin asks.
You shake your head,ย โ€œI donโ€™t know you have two amazing fighters going head to head for the very first time. We have Rachel, olympic diver, very strong and very determined. But then we have theย underdog of the hour Nora who is small and scrawny, but sheโ€™s packing quite a punch. It could be anyoneโ€™s game.โ€ย
โ€œYouโ€™reย absolutely right Y/N! But Rachel now as Nora pinned to the ground and she canโ€™t seem to get up! This fight might be over everyone!!โ€ย
โ€œHey there.โ€ Shelby says, sitting down at the metal table.ย
โ€œHello Shelby, can we get you anything?โ€ the two men ask and she just sit back in her seat, shaking her head.
Fader nods,ย โ€œWell letโ€™s get started, shall we?โ€ย
The three of them have a long conversation before Shelby ultimately decides to stop the interview all together.ย
โ€œWait just one question!โ€ Fader exclaims as Shelby stands up,ย โ€œHow do you feel about Y/N?โ€ย
At the sound of your name Shelby freezes in her spot,ย โ€œMy favorite person on the island.โ€ fear and worry start to fill her body at why the sudden question about you,ย โ€œIs she okay??โ€ย
You wereย trekking in the jungle looking for some source of food. All of you ate all the food when the rescue plane was coming, but itโ€™s not coming anytime soon so here you were.
Shelby, Toni, andย Martha said they were gonna go out looking, but none of them were to be found. So you decided to go on a littleย expedition to find them. You heard rustling coming from the tree up ahead, so you decided to follow the noise.
Only to see Toni and Shelby basically naked under a lychee tree,ย โ€œOh my god!!!โ€ you yell, covering your eyes with your hand.
โ€œAHHH!โ€ the two girls scream, but you couldnโ€™t see what they were doing.
You turned around facing towards the direction you came from,ย โ€œSorry sorry. I was just looking for you guys and food. I uh I didnโ€™t mean to.โ€ you say, shaking your head.
โ€œJesus Y/N you scared us!โ€ Shelby yells and you can hear rustling.ย
Hopefully, they were putting their clothes back on.ย
โ€œDamn it I was getting laid!โ€ Toni says jokingly and you could hear a smack hit her arm.
โ€œLeave ourย daughter alone!โ€ Shelby jokes and youย laugh softly.
โ€œCan I turn back around now?โ€ you ask meekly.
โ€œYes.โ€ the two girls say and you release a sigh and turn around to face the two girls.
You look at their flush faces,ย โ€œYou guys couldnโ€™t haveย gone a little farther away?โ€ you ask,ย โ€œThanks to you Iโ€™m more traumatized than I already was.โ€ you joke.ย
โ€œOh cโ€™mon you know you liked it.โ€ Toni nudges your shoulder as the two of you walk back to the camp.
Your face flushes as you put your head in your hands,ย โ€œStop corrupting her!โ€ Shelby yells at her.ย
โ€œLet me see her!โ€ Shelby yells at the two men.
โ€œWe canโ€™t let you do that. You girlsย aren't allowed to see each other yet. Not for awhile.โ€ Agent Young says.
โ€œCan you at least tell me if sheโ€™s okay?โ€ she asks, looking at the two men with her eyebrows raised.
โ€œSheโ€™s fine.โ€ย
That didnโ€™t relieve the feeling in Shelbyโ€™s chest that something could possibly be wrong. But she couldnโ€™t do anything, even if we tried.
The girls didnโ€™t know how long they were quarantined. It felt like months and it probably was a couple months. They finally let all of the girls hang out together in the small courtyard.
All of them hugging one another, super glad to see each other. Knowing that everyoneโ€™s okay. Well...everyone who made it.
โ€œY/N? Whereโ€™s Y/N?โ€ Leah asks, looking at all the other girls.
โ€œShe was okay when we left. She should be here.โ€ Dot adds on.ย
Shelby face was flushed with worry,ย โ€œThey wouldnโ€™t let me see her when I asked about her. I asked if she was okay, but they said she was fine.โ€ย
Fader was standing there with a guilty look on his face. Toniโ€™s blood was boiling at the look on his face. She runs up to him, pushing him against the wall, holding onto him by the collar.ย
โ€œWhere the fuck is she?!โ€ she yells.
Which causes Agent Young to burst into the room,ย โ€œWhatโ€™s going on here?โ€ย
โ€œWhere is Y/N?!โ€ Toni yells again, but at the other man.
Agent Young locks eyes with Fade and he subtly nods,ย โ€œSheโ€™s in the infirmary. Her heart was in bad condition, so she needed open heart surgery. The surgeons are working on her right now.โ€ย
โ€œYou told me she was fine when I was being interrogated.โ€ Shelby says in between gritted teeth,ย โ€œDid you lie?โ€ย
The two men donโ€™t answer. They just stare anywhere, but at the other girls. The silence spoke louder than any words did. Fatin scoffs at the menโ€™s actions.
โ€œThatโ€™s why you wanted to know huh?โ€ Leah asks, her imagination running wild, โ€œYou wanted to know about her because you were wondering if she was worth saving. Isnโ€™t that right?โ€ย
Neither of the men decided to speak again.
โ€œLet us see her.โ€ Rachel says, staring at them intensely.
โ€œWe canโ€™t do that. Sheโ€™s in surgery right now.โ€ Young says.
Toni pushes Fader up against the wall yet again,ย โ€œYouโ€™re gonna let us see her when sheโ€™s out. No excuses. No bullshit. Youโ€™re gonna let us see our friend.โ€ Toni threatens.
The girls sat in the waiting room of the infirmary. Leah paced back and forth chewing on her fingernail. Toni was trying to console a worried Shelby. While Dot, Rachel, and Fatin sat in the seats waiting impatiently.
Agent Young filled the girls in on your condition. You had a heart disease before you came onto the island. And your parents gave you a little trip to help because of the depressive state you were in. Little did they know you would be trapped on an island with none of the medication that was needed to help you survive.
All of the rigorous activity brought your heart to a weaker state than ever before. When the girls got saved, you were already experiencing symptoms of heart failure. And you were put under immediate watch when you reached the facility. You were getting better, but then your heart gave out and you needed to get an artery reconstructed.
โ€œWe already lost too much.โ€ Fatin whispers in the tense silence of the waiting room.ย
โ€œNora, Martha...โ€ Rachel draws out.
โ€œWe canโ€™t lose Y/N.โ€ Toni adds.ย
โ€œThe girl who loved the most has a heart condition. How ironic is that?โ€ Dot asks.
โ€œIโ€™m scared guys.โ€ Leah whispers.
โ€œSheโ€™s strong, sheโ€™ll pull through.โ€ Shelby says, trying to boost their hope, but sheโ€™s losing faith herself.
After God knows how long the doctor finally came out. All of the girls looking up at her. Tears brimming all of their eyes, scared for the answer they were about to get.
โ€œSheโ€™s okay. We managed to repair it without too much trouble. You guys can see her now.โ€ the doctor says and everyone lets out this huge breath.
A smile breaks out on Fatinโ€™s face as tears spill from her face. The six girls walk into your hospital room where you were laying peacefully. Your eyes somewhat open, you had a soft smile on your face as you stared at the girls.
โ€œHey guys!โ€ you exclaim, as excited as you can.
Dot lets out a small sniffle,ย โ€œYou scared us, asshole!โ€ย
โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell us about your condition?โ€ Fatin asks, tears still streaming down her face.
You shrug,ย โ€œWe already were going through too much. I didnโ€™t want to worry everyone more or get treated any differently. Rachel, if I told you about my heart would you have raced me?โ€ย
She shakes her head,ย โ€œNo.โ€ย
โ€œExactly.โ€ย
Rachel, Dot, and Fatin take a seat on the foot of the rock-hard hospital bed. You scooted over so Leah could cuddle in next to you. While Shelby and Toni pulled up a chair right by your side.
Leah rests her head on your shoulder,ย โ€œWe thought we were gonna lose you Squirt.โ€ Toni says, ruffling your hair.ย
Shelby was still crying, looking at you full of worry. You look at the blonde beauty who was now bald, but she still looked beautiful.
โ€œCome here.โ€ you whisper to her. You scoot over closer to her Leah, making room for her.
She sits next to you, crying into your chest,ย โ€œHey. Iโ€™m okay Shelby.โ€ you look at all of the other girls who still had worry on their face,ย โ€œIโ€™m okay guys. Weโ€™re all okay.โ€
But the girls donโ€™t look convinced.
โ€œListen to my heart Shelby, itโ€™s still beating. Just focus on that okay?โ€ you tell her and she nods. Even Leah could hear your heart beating from here.ย
โ€œYouโ€™re really okay?โ€ Shelby asks and you nod.
โ€œIโ€™m okay. I promise.โ€ you say, giving each of the girls a look,ย They all nod with small smiles,ย โ€œNow how the hell do we get out of here?โ€ you whisper.
And each of you give each other a small smirk,ย โ€œTime for the Great Escape.โ€ย

Summary: After another duffle bag of supplies washes up on shore, the girls realize that theyโ€™re going to be stuck here for a while. Episode six rewrite. 3.0k words.ย
Pairings: Toni Shalifoe x fem!readerย
Warnings: Swearing, throwing up
A/N: Okay listen I just wanted Toni fanfic but no one was writing it so here you go. Also I reallyย tried too hard to get the bed sharing trope LEAVE ME ALONE I LIKE IT PSLFDLJ (this is your reminder to turn on Interactivefics xx) oh and also theres a bit in here thats heavily inspired by @ drewstarkeysย Toni fic which you all should go read asap its amazing.ย
This was weird. It was really fucking weird. It had only been four days since we found Jannetteโ€™s grave empty. Four days since we found a clean water source. The longer we stayed on this god forsaken island, the more it felt like we were never getting off. And now another round of duffle bags have shown up. You know, as crazy as I think she is sometimes, Leahโ€™s starting to have a point. Something is way off about this place.ย
Nora and Rachel were the ones who spotted the bags. They washed up on the rocky side of the beach, covered in weeds. Dot was hoping for some more food, maybe more medicine if we were lucky. But to all our confusion, all the bags contained were blankets and pillows. Ten pillows and five blankets, Dot so cheerfully announced. My first red flag was that the insides were completely dry. I didnโ€™t want to say anything though. I was sure there was a reason for this.
โ€œThereโ€™s enough shit here for us to double up,โ€ Dot told us while Nora and I laid out the makeshift beds.ย โ€œExcept for one person who gets to sleep alone.โ€ย
โ€œWell thatโ€™s not fair, why does one person get a bed all to herself?โ€ Rachel asked, standing up defensively.ย
I rose to my feet as well.ย โ€œWhy donโ€™t we rotate it?โ€ I suggested, hoping to relieve some of the tension.ย โ€œW-with our off days. That way whoeverโ€™s off can have an extra good nightโ€™s sleep before they have to work again?โ€ The girls all nodded their heads and mumbled words of agreement. Rachel sat back down on her log.ย
โ€œGreat idea y/n. So whoโ€™s bunking with who?โ€ Dot asked. Rachel and Nora instinctively reached out for each other. Beside me, Toni looked to Martha. Martha gave Toni a weary look before reaching a hand out in the opposite direction. Towards Shelby. Even I had to stop myself from dropping my jaw.ย
Fatin gleefully agreed to pair with her โ€œnew bestie for the restie,โ€ Dot. That left myself, Toni and Leah. I glanced between them. Leah was avoiding my eye and Toni...Toni just looked mad. Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t like Leah, I just donโ€™t know her. Not that I know Toni any better, but at least Toni hasnโ€™t gone batshit crazy more than once. On the other hand though, I didnโ€™t find Leah unbelievably beautiful the way I did with Toni. And Toni would never want to bunk with me anyway. I crossed my arms, not doing a very good job at hiding my uncomfortableness. I was about to open my mouth to ask Leah to share when Toni called my name.ย
โ€œY/n,โ€ I turned to face her, eyes wide.ย โ€œYouโ€™re with me?โ€ I nod and swallow hard. Fuck.ย
The sun was getting lower and lower in the sky, just like our food supply. Rachel offered to go foraging for something meatier in the morning, so at least I could look forward to that.
I shuffled under the blanket Toni and I shared.ย โ€œSorry you got stuck with me,โ€ I whispered.ย โ€œI can go sleep with Shelby if you want, so you can be with Marty?โ€ย
โ€œNah,โ€ Toni shook her head.ย โ€œI donโ€™t mind. Besides, I donโ€™t really think Marty wants anything to do with me right now.โ€ I didnโ€™t know what to say. I felt bad for her. A lifetimeโ€™s worth of friendship thrown out of the plane. Literally.ย
I wondered if anyone else was awake. The light from the fire was enough to see everyoneโ€™s feet but thatโ€™s about it. I still wasnโ€™t accustomed to how dark it got at night. I was limited to just my hearing after the sun went down. I would try not to listen though. The more you listen, the more you realized how we definitely were not alone out there. Focusing on Toniโ€™s breathing beside me was enough to keep me sane.
Couldnโ€™t say the same for Leah though. She sat straight up and I thought she got bit by a crab or something.ย
โ€œDoes anyone else think that this is crazy?โ€ She asked us.
Fatin groaned.ย โ€œLeah, we got into a plane crash. Is that not enough crazy for you?โ€ย
โ€œNo seriously Fatin, what the fuck is going on?โ€
โ€œWhat are you talking about,โ€ Dot sat up.ย
โ€œI mean these,โ€ Leah held up a fist full of her blanket.ย โ€œWhere did they come from? Do none of you think that somethingโ€™s up?โ€ย
I pushed myself upright.ย โ€œIโ€™m starting to agree with Leah.โ€
โ€œOh God, not you too,โ€ Dot flopped back down onto her back.ย
โ€œNo, think about it,โ€ I started.ย โ€œA bag with medicine justย happensย to show up? And then we find Jannetteโ€™s grave empty!? And now these duffles appear withย nine peoples worthย of blankets and shit? Who brings that to a resortย retreat? Thatโ€™s weird. Itโ€™s really fucking weird.โ€ Everyone was sitting up at this point, staring at me.ย โ€œI didnโ€™t say anything when we opened them, but these things were dry. Everything bone dry. Rachel and Nora found the bags on the shore, like they were washed up. They should have been soaking. Hell, they should have sunk!โ€ I took a shaky breath in.ย โ€œEvery day we stay here the more it feels like weโ€™re not leaving. Itโ€™s like someoneย wantsย us to stay here. I know I sound crazy but come on!โ€
โ€œY/n...โ€ย
โ€œWe donโ€™t even remember the crash!โ€
โ€œWe all blacked out.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s not how plane crashes work though!โ€ I realized how loud I had gotten. I noticed how Nora was sitting, hugging her knees tight. Shelbyโ€™s face was pale, even in the orange glow from the fire. I closed my eyes.ย โ€œThis isnโ€™t my first crash.โ€ I kept my eyes shut. I didnโ€™t need to see their faces while I told this story.ย โ€œI got into another one like eight or nine years ago. The engines broke and we crashed in a forest somewhere near Chicago. And I remember it all. I remember the engines failing, and the plane falling and the back coming off when we hit the trees. I didnโ€™t black out until I was on the ground. So yeah, I think something is fucking off. This isnโ€™t right, none of this is right! We shouldnโ€™t be here, we shouldnโ€™t-โ€ย
I started to choke on my own words. I think I was starting to throw myself into a frenzy. Something grabbed at my hand. It was Toni. She looked me in the eyes. There was something in her gaze that told me I was safe. Told me to calm down.
โ€œOkay,โ€ Dot said slowly. โ€œI think weโ€™re all starting to lose it a little bit Y/n. And no sleep isnโ€™t gonna help. Letโ€™s all try to get some shut eye, yeah?โ€
I nodded profusely and flipped onto my side, embarrassed now from that outburst. I guess I didnโ€™t realize how far off the rails Iโ€™d been slipping. Silently, I started to cry.
I tried to stay as far away from Toni as possible. With my back to her, I figured that my crying could be somewhat camouflaged. I was very wrong.
โ€œHey,โ€ Toni murmured. When I didnโ€™t respond, she tugged on my shoulder to roll me over. I quickly wiped the tears off my cheeks. I couldnโ€™t look at her directly. Her gaze softened. I realized then how close we were. Even in pitch darkness, I could still make out the outline of her face, her cheeks, her nose, her lips-ย I prayed she couldnโ€™t hear how loud my heart was thumping. Toni reached a hand out and brushed another tear away. Had I started crying again? Jesus I was so far gone. โ€œI know how you feel. I wanna get out of here too.โ€™ I said nothing.
Toni moved to create some more space and put her arm out. I looked at her, questioning, though I doubt she could see my face. โ€œCome here,โ€ she said quietly. โ€œI heard what you told us yesterday, about what your mom says? Sometimes you just need a hug.โ€ I nearly started crying again right there. Slowly, I squirmed closer until my body was curled into hers. I smiled inwards. Besides the fact that my heart was trying to beat right out of my chest, I felt better. We both drifted off soon after.
ย I woke up to the sun shining way too bright and the sound ofโ€ฆsnickering? I opened my eyes and tried not to get totally blinded by the light. I looked up to see Nora, Fatin and Dot standing over me, all chuckling.
โ€œWhat?โ€ I mumbled. I must have woken Toni up because she started moving underneath me.
Oh.
Thatโ€™s why they were laughing.
I had fallen asleep curled into Toniโ€™s side and woken up completely entangled with her. It wasnโ€™t a one-sided thing either, she was holding on to me for dear life. What. The. fuck. I jolted upright, maybe a little too fast because the three girls around us started to laugh more.
โ€œGood morning love birds,โ€ Fatin cooed.
โ€œShut up,โ€ Toni said, using a hand to shield her eyes. โ€œWe were conserving heat.โ€
โ€œYeah, what she said,โ€ I smiled. โ€œIs it breakfast already?โ€
โ€œNot quite,โ€ Dot shrugged. โ€œMartha and Shelby are still getting some berries and shit.โ€
โ€œOh well in that case Iโ€™m going back to bed,โ€ Toni grunted, rolling over. Her and I were on water duty today, so technically we had no need to be up before breakfast anyway. Dot and the girls made their way back to the fire. I was half awake though. Might as well start the day early too. Except that Toni seemed to have other plans.
Before I had the chance to get up Toni was tugging at my arm, silently asking me to come lay down. I gave in immediately. โ€œCome keep me warm,โ€ she mumbled. And so I did. As I laid my head down onto her chest, I noticed Shelby looking at us. She turned away when she met my gaze, but there was something behind her eyes. Disgust. Great, just what we needed. Stranded in the middle of nowhere with a fucking homophobe.
โ€œDo you think Shelby is homophobic,โ€ I asked lowly.
โ€œI dunno, maybe? Why?โ€
โ€œNo reason, I justโ€ฆ.That would be pretty awkward if she was.โ€
โ€œYeahโ€ฆโ€
ย Nora woke me up a second time that day for breakfast. We ate in silence like we had done for the last few days. Food was running short and we were getting antsy. Toni and I broke away from the group after we ate with half of Fatinโ€™s luggage bag. We trekked up and through the forest towards the waterfall. Neither of us said a word the whole trip. I was starting to overthink. Like, heavily overthink. In normal circumstances, overthinking might be appropriate. The night before wasโ€ฆnot normal. But these were not ordinary circumstances. The middle of nowhere is probably the best place to have not normal and still be fine. Whatever. Right? Was it weird? Does she think Iโ€™m some weird crybaby now? Was that just a pity hug? Am I going absolutely crazy for no reason?
Iโ€™d gotten so wrapped up in my thoughts, I didnโ€™t even notice weโ€™d arrived back at camp. As Toni and I got to work, filling bottles to boil, Rachel was shouting from the top of a cliff. She was holding up a sack of something, I couldnโ€™t quite make it out.
โ€œWhoโ€™s ready to fucking feast?โ€
Mussels. Rachel found mussels. Now, Iโ€™d never been one for survival training but the one thing I knew was that seafood was a no.
โ€œI really donโ€™t mean to be a bubble burster, itโ€™s just that seafood can be really dangerous,โ€ I explained. Rachel looked like she wanted to take my head off. โ€œAnd we do not have the vicinities to properly prepare these.โ€
โ€œSo what, youโ€™re saying Iโ€™m trying to poison all of us?โ€ Rachel challenged.
โ€œNo! No, no, not at all Rach. This was a great find, you did good.โ€ I smiled wearily. โ€œAll Iโ€™m saying is that maybe someone should sit this one out, you know? Just in case. If weโ€™re all sick then weโ€™ve got no chance.โ€
โ€œGreat then whoโ€™s gonna be the starving one?โ€
โ€œI donโ€™t mind. I got berries.โ€
ย Turns out Shelby wouldnโ€™t eat either. An allergy, I think she said. It felt good to see everyone this happy. Leah was genuinely smiling, Dot seemed a little less stressed. For a second it felt like we were actually on the retreat we were supposed to be on. Toni started to make out with her mussels. Orโ€ฆwell you know, with them. We all found it hilarious. Except for Shelby...
โ€œFuck you.โ€ And with that Toni was off, running down the beach. I myself was on the brink of tears. Some churches manโ€ฆtheyโ€™ll brainwash even the best of 'em. I stared at the sand, not sure where to go. I wanted to chase after Toni, I wanted to stay right here and hide in the sand. The rest of the girls had gone quiet too.
โ€œWhat?โ€ Shelby asked. โ€œAm I not allowed to have my own beliefs?โ€
โ€œNot those ones,โ€ I spat. I pushed myself up and jogged around the bend.
I saw Toni near the shoreline. She had her feet in the water. Cautiously, I crept up behind her. I didnโ€™t want to startle her. โ€œYou good?โ€
Toni turned and her stance signaled she was ready for a fight. Her shoulders relaxed when she realized it was just me. โ€œYeah. No. Whatever, I just need a break from barbie bitch.โ€
โ€œYeah, you and me both,โ€ I chuckled. โ€œWill you though? Be okay?โ€
โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about me. Iโ€™m fine.โ€ She looked back out at the sea.
โ€œG-good. Okay, I, uhโ€ฆgood, Iโ€™m glad,โ€ I was muttering. I mutter when Iโ€™m nervous. Avoiding eye contact, all that fun stuff.
โ€œWhy are you so nervous?โ€ Shit. So she did notice. โ€œI mean youโ€™re chill around everyone else but you get all twitchy around me. Whatโ€™s with that?โ€ She paused and her face fell a bit. โ€œDo I scare you?โ€
โ€œOh god no,โ€ I grasped her hand. โ€œNo I promise Toni, Iโ€™m not scared of you.โ€
โ€œThen what?โ€
I look down at my toes. โ€œI-I umโ€ฆyou-โ€œ I swallow hard. โ€œYouโ€™re pretty.โ€
She didnโ€™t say anything and I was about ready to jump into the ocean and never come back. And then she laughed. She fucking laughed! Oh my god I was going to cry. I felt like I had just been publicly rejected in middle school all over again.
โ€œThat was cute,โ€ Toni said, still chuckling a bit. I looked her dead in the eyes and she wasnโ€™t kidding.
โ€œOkay, Iโ€™m gonna go back now.โ€ I turned on my heel and started walking back, very briskly might I add. I could not believe that just happened.ย
โ€œYeah me too-โ€œToni cut herself off and started heaving. I looked back. Toni was throwing up her entire stomach and then some. I rushed to her side, brushing the hair from her face. In the distance, I could see Rachel throwing up too. Oh Jesus Christ.
Shelby and I spent the rest of the day running from girl to girl, holding hair and passing out water. It was one huge haze of running back and forth, trying to make sure no one died. I knew that the mussels were a bad idea. God, how could I be so stupid? This was all my fault. Once Dot resurfaced from the dead, she took charge. Leah was sent to go find the medical bag while Dot and I boiled more water. She had me look over Toni and Marty while she took after the twins.
Toni was not good. By the time I got back to her, she was practically lifeless. Fatin was trying to get her to drink some canned water but it wasnโ€™t working. Matha, who was equally unwell sat by idly, crying into her can of water and trying not to throw up again. I pulled Toni off of Fatin and into my lap, trying to get her to drink the water from my bottle. She kept turning her head away or pushing my hand. I pulled her closer and upright with one arm and got Fatin to hold her face in one place.
โ€œDrink,โ€ I told her. She couldnโ€™t even speak but she shook her head. โ€œToni, drink. Please. You need to rehydrate for me okay?โ€ I got her to drink a little, but she just couldnโ€™t swallow. Martha started crying at some point. Luckily, Leah made it back with the medicine.ย
Trying to fight Toni into taking the pill was not working Especially not when everyone started crowding and screaming at myself and Dot. Shelby crouched to our level and took the pill from Dot. This only made things worse. No way in hell was Toni ever going to accept anything from Shelby. But blondie wasnโ€™t going down without a fight. In one motion, sheโ€™d shoved me out of the way and climbed on top of Toni, dropping the pill into her mouth and forcing her to swallow.ย
ย Night fell and everyone was exhausted. Toni hadnโ€™t woken up since Shelby drugged her and honestly I was getting a little worried she died in her sleep or something. Martha wasnโ€™t looking too hot either. Sheโ€™d broken into a sweat despite the cold of the night. Everyone else is tucked into their respective beds, dead silent. The cold night air made it easier to relax. After a day like today all i wanted to do was curl up next to Toni and never wake up.ย
Beside me, Toni started to stir. The weight Iโ€™d been carrying finally lifted off my shoulders. โ€œToni?โ€, I chimed. โ€œAre you alive?โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ she grumbled as she sat up, rubbing her eyes. I didnโ€™t give her a moment more to readjust to life before I tackled her in a hug.
โ€œOh my god, youโ€™re okay.โ€ She laughed at me again, but this time I didnโ€™t mind. Cause she wasnโ€™t dead. Or close to dying. I pulled her back down on top of me. She fell asleep again in my arms. I smiled down at her. Once again, there was a moment where I wasnโ€™t in living hell. It was just me and Toni. Somewhere safe. And warm, preferably. Everything was going to be okay.
ย And then Marty dropped dead.

Shelby's mouth went dry and a panicked sweat immediately coated her body as soon as she caught a glance of your face. You tried to talk to one of the girls in the seat beside you, but her nose was buried into her book.
Shelby stopped in her tracks, her wide eyes scanning your face once again, trying to make sure it was really you before she quickly hurried into one of the seats at the front, sliding down so you wouldn't see her.
But you had seen her. Even if it had been just a split second, you knew it was her.
Shelby squeezed her eyes shut, hoping this wasn't real, but even if she had only ever seen you through her screen, you were undeniably the same girl who she had spent months talking to online, under an alias as to not get caught by anyone from school, or even worse, by her family. She had never imagined that she would crush on you, but she had. Fast and messily. You were the breath of fresh air in her life. With you, she didn't feel ashamed of who she was. To say getting to know you finally made her feel less alone in her predicament, was a big understatement.
Your message had come as a surprise, especially since she had only had the account for a day, and she had no idea how you had found her, but apparently, you liked her reblogs and decided to say hello. The possibility of being able to be herself seeing as you had no clue who she was or where she was from, had lifted an enormous weight off her shoulders and it didn't take long before she felt more relaxed each day she logged on. You helped bring out the real Shelby, you made it easy for her. The always preppy and smiling Shelby that she was at school was an act to uphold popularity and mask what she was really feeling deep down. But whenever you texted her, her smiles were genuine.
She had found a friend in you, and even if you lived miles apart, Shelby valued your friendship as much as she valued her friendship with Becca. It was weird, how you were able to weasel your way into her life without actually being around, how you had been able to make her miss you even if she had never been in your presence. Her mornings were spent replying to the silly texts you had sent while she was still asleep and she could never wait to get back home, so she could talk to you again.
It went wrong once you both showed your faces. Or maybe that was actually when things started to finally go upwards. You knew she was anxious to perhaps find out that you were still someone she knew, or that this was all a prank by someone at school, so you sent her a tiny video first to ease her nerves. Her breath hitched when she pressed play, when she saw your eyes, heard your voice for the first time, saw your smile. A loud sigh left her lips when she realised you were indeed a stranger to her... although, well, not really. Not anymore.
Her hands began to sweat when she typed different replies, only for her to delete them all. She bit her lip, looked to her closed door and perked her ears. It seemed like she was still home alone, her parents were probably still at the game with her siblings. Without wasting another second worrying, she called the number you had given her.
She kept chewing her lip, waiting for you to pick up, realising she wasn't ready for this until it was too late to back out when your face appeared on her screen. You smiled at her with the biggest grin she had ever seen.
"Shelby!" Your voice rose an octave in excitement after seeing her, but then you immediately swallowed and felt your cheeks blush at the gorgeous girl staring back at you, who didn't say a word. Both things surprised you. You hadn't pictured Shelby to be this extraordinarily beautiful, but you also knew she usually wasn't this quiet.
"Um... hi," Shelby finally breathed out and started to play with her hair, "It's... really good to see you." She tried to downplay her sudden burst of enthusiasm and the tickles in her chest.
"It's nice to finally have a face in mind when I think of you."
You caught her off guard with your words and she immediately opened and closed her mouth, at a loss for words.
"Oh, yeah, for sure. I hope you're not...like, regretting it all?"
Your smile dropped, "Why would I?"
Shelby let out an awkward chuckle, her insecurity resurfacing. Your pretty eyes staring right at her, even through a phone, not helping her nerves, "I don't know, don't mind me. This is new for me, I don't know what to say..." She rubbed her neck and looked out of her bedroom window, getting nervous under your glance. "I think this is like... literally the only time that I've been incredibly happy and relieved to be talking to an absolute stranger online."
"Absolute stranger? Wow, that hurt, Shelbs," The cheeky grin on your face made her crack a grin of her own, "I know what you mean, don't worry. And I'll assure you that I have never ever seen your face before in my entire life, which is an absolute shame, by the way."
She playfully rolled her eyes at your comment and waved you off, feeling more relaxed each second. "Well yes, it's a shame. At least I'll now get to see your face more often, I'm guessing?"
'You guessed right."
"Well, ain't I a lucky lady then?"
That's where it started. Texting turned into talking over the phone, at least as long as Shelby couldn't be overheard. It wouldn't have been a problem at first, until the occasional flirty remarks or nicknames got exchanged. Not even three weeks later and Shelby couldn't imagine her days without you in them. Without seeing your sleepy face on her screen as she wished you goodnight and watched you doze off. Without talking to you and cracking jokes while she kept you company during your work breaks. Or during your lonely nights when your grandparents were asleep already and you didn't want to wake them up. Those were your favourite nights, where you'd sit on the roof of their shed, feet dangling, a can of soda beside you while you talked through the night with Shelby a thousand miles away in Texas.
You were awfully aware of the feelings you had developed for the Texan, but you also knew the doubt and insecurity bubbling in that pretty head of hers, and the pressure she felt from her parents, the hatred she'd receive as soon as she would come clean. It had all turned to Shelby's self-hatred, to not wanting to come to terms with anything, to push it away as far away as she could. While she adored the time she spent talking to you and the way her heart burst every time she saw your face, she hated herself for it. Whenever she would even slightly open up or be romantic towards you, the next day she'd be radio-silent. You knew she was beating herself up about letting herself go, about giving in. And while you wanted to get it into her mind that there was nothing to be ashamed of, you knew it was not your place to meddle. This was her journey, she had to take the steps, she had to do this at her own pace. All you could do was support her from the sidelines and wait for her with open arms at the finish line.
However, you wished you had stepped in when she broke the news to you months later,
"I'm going to delete the app... and my account."
Although she didn't say it, you knew what it meant.
"My parents are fucking breathing down my neck. My dad apparently heard me talking to you once, late at night, and now I have to hand in my phone whenever I go to bed." She panicked as she whispered into her phone. She stopped talking when she heard someone walk into the bathrooms of the bowling alley. She continued, but quieter, "I don't know what he heard or what he knows but I can't have them find out. You understand that, right?"
"I do... but Shelby, let's take a deep-"
"I have to go. Don't text me unless I text you first. Please?"
"I-I... Sure?"
"I'll call you back later, sweetie." Her voice sounded loud and overly excited, "Yeah, no worries. See you then, Andrew. Mwuah."
You stared at your phone as soon as she had ended the call. The gnawing feeling in the pit of your stomach never went away, it only got worse when she never texted you again. You had tried to call a couple of times, had texted her pretending to be a classmate who wanted to know about the homework for the next day, but you never got a reply.
Your nights were now spent alone, on top of the shed, with tears streaming down your face as you wondered if Shelby was okay. The soda cans had turned into beer cans as you tried to mend your broken heart and wash away self-pity. Maybe you should have just told her how real your feelings were, maybe that would have made her stick around, would have made her more at ease that if she even had any feelings for you, that they were reciprocated and that you wouldn't leave her hanging. You should have told her that you would help her overcome any and every obstacle her family or society would throw her way.
Was she okay? Was she healthy? How had she done on her last beauty pageant show? Had she managed to ace the history exam you had helped her study for? It was silly, but it all kept you up at night.
For once, you were happy that you had to take care of your grandparents and little sister, that you had to work your ass off to pay for it all. It kept you occupied, all day long. But the nights were terribly quiet. They made you rethink everything. What if you had said or done something differently? But Shelby's disappearance wasn't the only thing you were dealing with.
You sat on the hood of your grandfather's rundown car, staring at all the happy couples and families walking down the busy street.
"Sounds risky and not worth it at all."
"10k is not worth it for you?" The guy beside you offered you his cigarette. You eyed it for a couple of seconds, then saw his friends glaring at you. You knew what they were thinkingโ€” what is a goody-two-shoes doing with us? Wanting to prove them wrong, you took the biggest drag of the cigarette, making you cough hysterically. They laughed at you.
"I mean, it is." You spoke seconds later, "But I feel like you're all going to throw me under the bus as soon as shit gets a little too close for you guys."
"My mom works for childcare. I can make both your files either her top priority or put them in her bin."
You cursed under your breath, taking another drag of the cigarette. Thoughts raced through your head. You were already in debt and your jobs weren't paying nearly enough. The price of your grandmother's medicine had gone up and if that wasn't worse enough, your demented grandfather had given the last two thousand dollars to the scammer on their doorstep when you had been at work. Your little sister didn't seem to notice all the chaos, she was too occupied painting in the backyard or playing with her stuffed toys. But you knew this would affect her too. Maybe you wouldn't ever see her again if they separated you.
"Can you... go through it all again? From the top?"
โ˜พ โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:ยท๏พŸ .: โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ: .โ‹†
You shot up from your seat, insanely fast, making the girl next to you finally look up and give you the light of day. The curly-haired girl in front of you turned around too,
"Are you alright? You look a little pale." She stated, making you stop your staring at the back of Shelby's head and instead turned to her. She had the audacity to acknowledge you and then hide and pretend she hadn't?! After all these months?
"Um... I'm going to the bathroom."
You rushed into the little cubicle and locked the door behind you, immediately splashing water into your face and neck. What wicked game was the universe playing to decide to bring Shelby back to you in the most cruel and confronting way possible? How in the world was this going to be an educational weekend filled with activities if you were going to be busy trying to not rip the stitches out of your heart... or kill the girl for disappearing on you?
A soft knock on the door sounded from behind you.
"Occupied!"
"Yea... I don't have to go... It's just that we need to be in our seats for take-off."
You didn't know which one of the girls it was, but you hated her for noticing you were gone. All you wanted was to jump out of the tiny aeroplane window, grab your bags and hitchhike on the side of the road to get yourself back home.
With a loud bang, you shut the toilet, making most girls turn around to see what was up at the back of the plane. A sour frown occupied your face, and some girls hesitantly turned back around, slightly intimidated by you. Shelby never turned to look at you though. It was like she had a set of eyes in the back of her head, as if she could see it was you.
You buckled your seatbelt and stared out of the window, your thoughts helping the time pass. You thought of everything that had happened with Shelby, how she had made you feel before, during and afterwards. You thought about the shitty situation at home and the predicament you had put yourself in thanks to your own shitty and irresponsible choices.
Twenty-five minutes up in the air later and a steward started to hand out cakes and drinks, while an introduction video played out in front of you in the meantime. You couldn't care less. You just wanted this weekend to be over with so you could go home and put an end to all the bullshit they had put you through.
"I'm good, thanks. I ate already on the previous flight." You told him once he reached the back row, but the girl in front of you turned around. She avoided eye contact when she saw the still-present glare on your face.
"I've heard that we won't be getting anything unhealthy because healthy eating habits are the first step to a healthy and balanced life."
You eyed her, then looked at the steward giving you a big and encouraging smile, before looking back at the cake he held in front of you, like it was some fucking prize you had won.
"In that case... I haven't had a real chocolate cake in ages, only the freezer ones from the local mart near our block...and it does look like a fancy ass cake. Why not."
The girl gave you a weak smile before turning around to leave you to yourself again. Your eyes wandered to the brunette next to you. You watched how she had her book clutched to her chest while she pulled the cake apart with her fork, clearly not hungry.
You took a bite and immediately closed your eyes at the taste. The last time you'd had a cake this good was probably during your eleventh birthday party when your grandmother had baked it for you. She used to love to bake all kinds of things, but the last five years she had been mostly bedridden. You would buy her a package of Hostess Birthday Cupcakes whenever you had some spare money, but it could never be compared to her baking.
You caught yourself smiling at the taste, and at the memories, but you tightly gripped onto your seat when the plane started to shake. The half-eaten chocolate cake dropped onto your lap, but you couldn't care less about that as the turbulence intensified. Some screams were heard when the lights flickered before shutting off.
Your whole body froze. As if you had put a pause on yourself while the rest of the film kept playing. Your knuckles turned white from how hard you were gripping the armrests, but all you could do was sit and wait for the inevitable. You thought of your younger sister, how you were never going to come back on the promise you had made her, of how you would never see your grandparents again, of the box of 500 dollars you had buried in the garden as a backup, how there was no way you'd be able to save up for your sister's college fund anymore and how you would never ever get redemption or a chance to clear your name.
You felt your eyes get heavy and your head started to hurt, but you were oh so thankful that you didn't have to endure the rest of the horror movie when your vision went black.
โ˜พ โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ:โ € *โ‹†.*:ยท๏พŸ .: โ‹†*ยท๏พŸ: .โ‹†
A wave of water splashed over you, making you gasp and fall into a coughing fit when the water splashed into your mouth.
"Hey!" Someone yelled, but you had no clue who it was or where it came from.
Disorientated, you tried to get a view of your surroundings, but another wave washed over you and took you under, making you tumble and turn underneath the surface. You tried to push yourself up, even if you had no clue what was up or down.
Two hands tightly held onto you and tried to pull you up, but you felt her body clash into yours when a new wave hit you. You got pushed to the surface and immediately took in a massive gulp of air, letting yourself get pulled back.
"I've got you!" She reassured, even if she was struggling to keep both of you above the water.
You slightly turned your head and recognised one of the girls from the flight pull you back onto shore. You accepted her help and let her support you but dropped to your knees as soon as your feet reached the sand. The girl hunched over, trying to catch her breath.
"You good?"
"Fuck," You coughed, the water still burning in your nose and throat, "I think so. Thanks."
"No biggie." She glanced your way, "Toni."
"Y/N."
She suddenly started to throw up, making you wince and look away. You had never been the best when it came to puke, but you had always been the one to have to clean it up whenever someone in your family was sick.
Your coughs mixed together with her heaving, but both your attention turned to the girl running up to you.
"Hey! You two! Are you alright? Is it just the two of you?"
"Marty! Did you see her?" Toni immediately shot back. You finally remembered what had happened before waking up here. How the plane had been filled with girls, including you, and how this definitely wasn't supposed to be the end destinationโ€” the retreat in Hawaii.
"It's just me and Fatin, and now you two."
Your heart started beating faster and you felt worried when Shelby crossed your mind. Where the fuck was she?
"I'm Dot, by the way." The girl rushed out, but there was no time to exchange pleasantries when cries of help sounded from somewhere in the ocean.
"Help! Hey!"
"I see you! We see you! Hey!"
All three of you started to make a run for it, helping the two girls out of the water.
"Is there anybody else out there? Think! Did you see anybody?!" Toni drilled the girl who had sat next to you on the plane, not leaving her room to recover.
"I- I didn't. I didn't see anybody."
Toni and Dot carried the unconscious girl out of the waters while you offered a hand to the girl who was in the same predicament you had been not even five minutes ago. She used your shoulder for support as you led her back onto shore, putting her down softly near the others.
You plucked the wet strands of hair out of your face and looked around, realising how fucked up the situation was. You fell down into the sand next to her, missing the worried look she shot your way when she noticed how distant you seemed. The two girls approaching from the other side seemed to go over your head as well as you kept staring at the ocean. This was bad. This was way worse than if you had just died during the crash.
The commotion going on behind you didn't even make you look up. You didn't hear them talking about how the girl wasn't breathing, you didn't notice that the group of girls seemed to finally be complete again, which also mean that you hadn't seen her approach and that you missed how her eyes stared at the lost look on your face.
But you finally came to your senses when Dot's voice yelled over the crashing of the waves, "Who knows CPR?"
You turned around and softly raised your hand. You had signed yourself up for CPR class when your grandmother's health had started to decay. Sure, she was old, but that didn't mean that you didn't want to save her if you could.
For the first time in months, your eyes met those of Shelby's. She immediately turned her head when she got caught, feeling ashamed and slightly intimidated by the look on your face. She couldn't quite tell what was going on in your head, besides the obvious panic and worry of the situation, but she didn't know where your thoughts were at when it came to her. She dared to sneak a glance your way again when she saw your head turn, and she watched with concern as you let yourself fall back onto the sand, the exhaustion getting the best of you.
Day one of hell had started.
