I think what really elevated Zhu’s character for me was the excellent cheer in which she goes about doing the most morally corrupt things. She’s mild and funny and grins a lot and jokes with her friends and flirts with her wife and loves her sooo tenderly (the end of swbts though oughhh); she’s a monk who can’t fight for shit (or ride a horse) and is altogether a pretty chill guy. And idk it’s so refreshing because the author subverts the (incredibly infuriating) trope of squashing every ‘badass’ non-male character into the snarky-and-cold-and-hates-everyone cast. Zhu is warm and loving and wily and incredibly fucked up and it’s so much more fun to watch than whatever is going on with most YA leads

reading the poppy war right after reading she who became the sun and babel made me notice a lot of similarities between the characters in the books, which is great because the aforementioned books are amazing. rin is trapped in a life of poverty and insignificance, about to be made worse by being forced to marry some rich guy, kind of like how zhu was living in a village dying from famine, except maybe not as bad. they both go to extremes to escape their fates of nothingness, rin by studying via extreme means to pass the keju (with academic discipline i could only wish to possess) and zhu walking all the way to the monastery and waiting outside for days, refusing to be refused. basically, they were going to achieve greatness and get out of their bad situation by fire by force. secondly, we see altan, who is supposedly the last of an exterminated people and carries so much hate and anger, and he goes to what would generally be considered unethical lengths to exact his revenge. here, there is a similarity to robin and how after ❗babel spoiler❗ ramy and griffin died, he was eager to pull out the resonance bars and see england fall apart without silver without caring about how that would affect the ordinary people who had no stake in the decision on whether to declare war on china or not. additionally, when altan ❗poppy war spoiler❗ sacrifices himself, it was clear that he didn't really want to live after everything. basically, the promise of revenge had been his driving force, and after that there was nothing left to keep him going. just like how robin had always planned to ❗babel spoiler❗ bring the tower down on themselves because he couldn't really fathom the idea of living after all that had transpired. as i'm reading the dragon republic i can also see the same thing going on with rin. all this long story is to say that r.f. kuang and shelley parker-chan are amazing writers and never disappoint. can't wait for the rest of this series to ruin me!

Mod opinion: I've read this and it's long, but interesting. The transness is not fully canon, but it is still quite trans.
