“The state of New York passed a law Thursday prohibiting the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores. The move is an attempt to halt the puppy-mill-to-pet-store pipeline and stop abusive breeders.
“Dogs, cats and rabbits across New York deserve loving homes and humane treatment,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul says in a statement. “I'm proud to sign this legislation, which will make meaningful steps to cut down on harsh treatment and protect the welfare of animals across the state.”
Puppy mills—or large-scale dog breeding facilities—are often unregulated. At these sites, the dogs’ welfare is compromised in favor of maximizing profits, per the Humane Society of the United States, but most puppy mills remain legal...
Animal rights activists have praised the new law, saying it will help diminish animal cruelty and encourage people to adopt some of the 6.3 million shelter animals in need of a home annually...
The new law, which goes into effect in 2024, will allow pet stores to rent out their space to shelters for adoption events. Under the law, customers may still buy animals directly from breeders, which proponents say will make them more aware of where their pets are coming from, writes Maysoon Khan for the Associated Press (AP).
“If a consumer went to a mill and saw the awful conditions, they wouldn’t buy these animals,” New York State Senator Michael Gianaris tells the AP. “Dealing with a breeder allows people to see where their dog comes from, and it cuts off the middlemen that serve as a way to wash off the awful activities that take place at the mill.”” -via Smithsonian Magazine, 12/16/22

THANK YOU!
On Chapter 27 of HIs Inheritance, I allowed tipping with the note that anything I received would go to support my local animal shelter in memory of my little guy.
I had no idea how that would go. I never ask for or expect anything for my writing here and that will always be true. But the generosity? I don't know what to say. Thank you so much!
Here's how it went. They have 3 mother cats already with 16 kittens total who will need to be fed until they are adopted.
So we got food for them:
Plus, they do sponsorships so if someone wants to sponsor a cat or dog in the shelter, they can do so by paying the adoption fee for them so that when someone adopts them, they only need to worry about neutering or spaying if needed.
We sponsored Hampshire:
He's been in the shelter the longest of the cats (since October) so I hope this helps him get adopted too. He's not 2 years old yet and he's a sweetheart. I'll let you know as soon as he is adopted.
Thank you so much for this. I am just blown away. HUGS all around.
Jamie 💕💕💕

The shelter I got my bunny from is having a fundraiser!
The way it works is people enter their pets to be chosen to be used in the yearly calendar they make and people give a donation in order to vote on the pets. I entered my rabbit since I got him from this shelter and wanted to show support for it. All funds raised by voting on him will be going straight to the shelter and supporting more animals like him. I'm very grateful to this shelter for bringing me my wonderful boy and would love if he could help raise some funds for them.

Rory is estimated to be around 3 years old and is an absolute goof! He is learning to walk on a leash and tries very hard to keep his kennel clean. Rory may do best as the only pet in the home.

Continuing my personal Yellow run, I have stopped because I don’t want to do Silph lmao
So many Pokemon named after shelter critters! I very nearly named one of them Pikachu, as there is a litter of kittens named Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, no joke.
( Adoptable pets, ranging from cats and dogs to roosters, rabbits, and guinea pigs, viewable here! https://adopt.adopets.com/shelter/austin-animal-center )

Playful Shelter Cat | SPCA | New York
Playful Shelter Cat | SPCA | New York
I spent several years volunteering at our local animal shelter.
I would take photographs of the animals there that they could use to show what animals are available for adoption on their website and social media.
High quality photograph go a long way to helping shelter pets find homes.
I would really like to bring this back as part of my regular work in photography.
This cute cat was so…

Microchipping is a quick, easy, and affordable way to help protect companion animals if they get lost. However, it’s important for guardians to keep contact information updated so that animals can quickly be reunited with their families.
